Rodeo and chuckwagon racing events are televised across Canada. However, both have been the target of increasing international criticism by animal welfare groups and politicians concerned about particular events as well as animal rights organizations seeking to ban rodeo in general. Calgary's national and international identity is tied to the event. UNBRIDLED IS GOING TO ROCK Canberra’s inaugural UNBRIDLED Festival of Horses, Music and Food is galloping in to Thoroughbred Park on 15 November 2014. This brand spanking new festival has something to offer everyone - no matter your age, shape or shoe size! Unbridled celebrates all that is wonderful about our four-hoofed friends. Even better, the festival is bringing the party with fantastic music and delectable food. Whats it all about? One fateful day, a light bulb lit up over the head of Greg Nugent, General Manager of the Harness Racing Club. He had a look at all of the successful horse festivals held every year in the USA, and realised that Canberra would be the perfect place to create the same thing in Australia. Because Canberra has the highest ownership per capita of horses in Australia, Greg knew that Canberra was an ideal location for a festival celebrating and showcasing the horse and its numerous capabilities. Greg’s vision was for a festival that served more than the just the equine community. He wanted an event for everyone in the region, and beyond! Greg says, “We want this to become part of Canberra’s annual event calendar. The equine-side is a main focus, but to establish this on an annual scale we really need to ensure we provide activities which will appeal to those visitors who don’t necessarily own horses or have any interaction with equine societies.” Greg brought in a crack team (two enthusiastic, highly caffeinated women in a tiny office) and a Committee of equine experts from across the region, and thus the festival was born! Festival Manager Kate Bowman says: “Unbridled is definitely going to be something the whole family can join in on. We have an activity packed kid’s zone, great food and craft stalls, major headline musical act Busby Marou, adventurer Tim Cope coming to speak along with equine experts, an International Jousting Tournament, trick riding and so much more!” Unbridled 2014 will take place through the whole day, and into the night, on Saturday November 15th. The festival will honour the majestic glory of the horse and all it has to offer - with a multi faceted equine program including performances, demonstrations, workshops and classes run by industry professionals and clinicians. Unbridled celebrates the horse for its pure beauty and its place in our history. But this isn’t just any old “horse fest”. There’s also going to be an

impressive music and entertainment program, and a “Grand Bazaar” food and craft market teeming with delicious, enticing and sparkly sights and smells! Expect to see jousting, mounted archery, barrel racing, horseball, mounted games, horseboarding and a jaw dropping horse spectacular – and that’s just on the Main Arena! As well as the wild, exciting action on the Main Arena, there will be lots of slightly mellower activity taking place on the Horse Quarter, featuring demonstrations from a brilliant array of equine experts, including farriers, liberty training, mini trots, horse therapists, info on bitless bridles & saddle fitting, buying your first horse and much, much more. There’s also going to be plenty of opportunity for festival attendees to get ‘up close and personal’ with a range of horses breeds in the Unbridled Breed Pavilion. Horse breeders will also have the opportunity to share their considerable knowledge with the public throughout the day. Last, but definately not least, will be a presentation from Tim Cope, one of the most exciting speakers in the country. Tim Cope, an internationally award-winning Australian author, adventurer, and filmmaker who went on an iconic three year, 10,000km journey by horse on the trail of nomads made

famous by Genghis Khan. To guarantee a fun-filled day for teens and tweens alike, the HorseWyse Neigh’bourhood Kid’s Zone will feature heaps of hands-on activities, craft sessions and a life-size human showjumping course all part of our pony mad plan! HorseWyse Magazine and Pony Club have teamed up together to ensure that there will be horsey fun for all ages! Unbridled is about more than just the horses. The festival has put together a jampacked music program which will run into the wee hours of the night. Busby Marou, who are quickly becoming live performance legends in Australia, will be headlining a brilliant musical line-up of established and emerging Australian artists. The Hitching Post Stage will be fully set designed and one of the coolest places to hang, have a beverage and shimmy ‘til you can’t dance no more! Possible causes of infertility in mares By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic There is nothing more frustrating and disappointing than to have gone through all the soul-searching, research, planning and decision making involved when deciding to breed your mare to a carefully selected stallion and end up with the mare not in foal at the end of the breeding season. Obviously there can be many factors contributing to the failure and each individual situation is different but when an owner is in that position, they all want to know why? I have said that each situation is different and more often than not the owner is told "the mare has an infection" and that is why she did not go in foal. In reality, the incidence of primary uterine infections in mares is very low. They certainly do occur and if it is really a proper infection and endometritis, (infection of the uterus), then the prognosis and outlook is indeed poor. For an infection to become entrenched and be a real cause of infertility, there is usually some associated degenerative changes in the lining of the uterus that predisposes the tissues to recurring infections and these are often irreversible. More often than not, mares can develop some post service inflammation and irritation in the uterus that is transient and if correctly managed, will settle down and allow the mare to breed on. Most of the infertility in mares is caused by husbandry and management practices imposed by humans that take away the natural freedom horses have in the wild to control their own times and situations of breeding. We dictate when the mare and stallion breed and control the nutrition and agistment conditions that the horses are kept under and end up creating a lot of the problems that occur. The skill of the stud master managing the breeding is by the far the most important element in obtaining high conception rates in any program. The mare has a 21 day breeding cycle where most are in season for five days and out for 16. The mare actually ovulates close to the end of the five days in season and in most cases, will only accept the stallion in the immediate period close to ovulation. Simplistically, in a nutshell, nature dictates that a mare should only be bred once or twice during her heat cycle and at a time that is most likely to coincide with ovulation. Breeding of mares, particularly at times when the reality is that they have little chance of going in foal, is the major contributing factor to infertility. The most dominant instinct in nature is survival of the individual. Any issue that causes a set back to the general well being and health of the individual mare is going to adversely affect the reproductive cycle as the natural instinct for survival will dictate that it is unwise for an individual to commit to conception and the excessive demands of gestation if environmental conditions are Page 6

What we aim for, a healthy mare and foal is not always achievable such that individual herself may be struggling to survive. The mareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cycle is often interrupted, prolonged, or irregular and she may not be ovulating when she should. Any factor causing a downturn in the nutrition of the mare is likely to shut down the cycle. Sending an individual mare to a breeding farm where she is suddenly put into a herd of other horses that have to compete for feed will invariably cause weight loss and set back until she has been able to adapt. Attempting to breed this mare at this time can be the first step towards infertility. Similarly, nature has set the mare up so that her most fertile time of the year is when she is likely to conceive at a time that will result in the foal being born at a time when the weather is warm and feed is likely to be plentiful. Hence the most fertile time of the year for mares is December - January so that 11 months later when the foal is born will coincide with the warmer wetter periods. Attempting to breed the mare early in the season, August - September, is at a time when the estrus cycle is likely to be prolonged or irregular and ovulation unlikely to occur. These are examples of pressures we place on our horses that go against the natural circumstance. Each time a mare is covered, be it naturally or by insemination, a cycle of inflammation is set up in the uterus that eventually can create unhealthy and less favorable environmental conditions in the uterus that are not conducive to the implantation and nurturing of an embryo. Once a mare is covered, and ovulation occurs, fertilization of the egg by the sperm occurs in the oviduct of the mare. The fertilized egg lives in the oviduct for about five days before it moves down into the uterus to begin the process of mplanta-

tion. This period of grace is nature's way of allowing the inflammatory flare that occurs in the uterus to settle down and clear so that conditions are favorable for the embryo. Repeated servicing of the mare perpetuates a cycle of inflammation in the uterus that results in failure of proper settling down and paves the way for infection. What I have discussed above is certainly simplistic. It is an attempt to convey to the reader some of the circumstances that lead to infertility. Obviously many other factors occur in the real world. The first major factor that a lot of people fail to consider is the stallion. He certainly can contribute to failure. Again, many factors can affect the concentration and viability of the sperm. Do not forget to consider the stallion. Some mares have anatomical and structural problems, particularly those who have had several foals. Damage from previous foalings to the uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva can all contribute. Similarly, some mares have poor vulval tone and conformation leading to a condition known a pneumovagina or "windsucking" where air is aspirated into the vagina and uterus setting up an inflammatory cycle. The older the mare becomes, and particularly the more foals she has had, the more likely the general health and viability of the reproduction system will be compromised. The list of potential problems goes on and on. Sufficient to say that most of these problems will be detected by a veterinary inspection of the mare prior to the breeding season. Each mare has a different potential or likelihood of being categorized as being possibly a difficult breeder. Discussion of these factors, plus assessment of the current management and husbandry plus the possible likely conditions where the mare is to be bred all form the basis of formulation of the best breeding plan to best enhance the chances of settling the mare

Looking beyond the symptoms By ANGELA DAVISON Having been a horse herbalist for over 20 years, we see certain patterns emerging at particular times of year. Spring has arrived with its usual attendant problems for horses. Allergies abound, hot itchy conditions that drive both animal and owner "round the bend", respiratory problems like wheezing and coughs, unexplained head-tossing and of course the usual hormonal flush associated with reproduction. It's all too tempting and very easy to observe the symptoms, scan the shelves and self treat the horse. Some human health products sound ideal, but horsesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; systems are not the same as ours, and the product may even damage your horse. People have been known to treat symptoms with herbs bought off the shelf and if that one doesn't work, then try another. Improvements in the condition may be noted but in everything, the underlying cause should be investigated and advice gained from a qualified animal complementary practitioner. Many people may think that all herbs are fine to use because they're natural and whilst commercial dried herbs have varying degrees of therapeutic value, they can still cause problems if mis-used. Uneducated trying of one herb after another may not only prove to be just expensive but could also damage your horse.

As with pharmaceuticals, a qualified prescription will give a healthier result. For example, a mare's hormonal system is frequently blamed for any display of crankyness. I have ridden hundreds of horses over a range of disciplines in a competitive situation and I know at times the mares/fillies have been in season, but in my experience it rarely affects performance. What we have found in practice over the years, is that the hormonal cycle can exaggerate any displayed symptoms. A recent case comes to mind. A seven year old show jumping mare whose owner/rider said "she's so cranky, she hates the world most of the time and then she's so sweet at other times.She has enormous ability but rarely produces it, she makes a fool of me as she's so erratic, she often has times when she's not interested in her feed so it's hard to keep the condition on her, sometimes she tries to rip my head off when I rug her or girth her up. Everybody says I should get rid

of her as she's such a hormonal cranky b......â&#x20AC;? We have many geldings who present with similar problems but no-one seems to blame it all on their hormone systems. Fortunately this mare's hair was sent to us and went through our testing procedure. Imbalances were found in her liver and gastro-intestinal tract, which caused her great discomfort intermittently, we also found her diet did not suit her system at all (huge problem with wheat). We sent her a Herb/FR formula tailor-made specifically for her, changed the diet slowly but removed wheat immediately. It was suggested that the owner could consider their vet check out hormone levels if still required. Two weeks into the treatment we had a very excited owner reporting major positive changes. The mare had our usual 12 week treatment which balanced up her system, stayed with the diet which suits her well, no-one mentions her hormones now as they're going up through the grades and fulfilling their potential. This mare is not only feeling better but demonstrating it over the longer term, an achievement that would never have been accomplished without looking beyond the symptoms to find the base cause! what everyone else reportedly is doing As stated above, the first 1 – 4 hours after delivery determine the fate of the foal. The gold standard is that the foal should stand and suck within the first hour. If this happens, it is almost a certainty that no problem will occur. Those that are weak and lethargic, take forever to get to their feet, and fail to find the teat and drink are odds on to develop issues. Most such foals have had some problem either in the womb during gestation, or during the birthing process. There are endless possible conditions but prematurity, placentitis in the mare, infections in utero, excessive length of gestation, placental separation, and asphyxia, or loss of oxygen, during delivery, are all possible scenarios. The outcome is what we refer to generally, is a “dummy” foal. Invariably, there is something wrong with the foal and this interrupts the natural way of development. Obviously the foal that is seriously affected is easy to pick, and owners anticipate that a problem will occur. The more subtle cases, where the foal progresses, seemingly satisfactorily, albeit slowly, are the ones that commonly develop what is known as “Joint Ill”. These foals progress seemingly satisfactorily, until somewhere between usually one and six weeks, become suddenly lame in one or more legs. This onset of

In fact, to be more specific, the first few HOURS after delivery are where it all happens. It is common knowledge that the foal needs to get a good dose of colostrum, and it is also common practice top apply some form of disinfectant to the navel stump of the torn placenta to avoid “Navel Ill” and “Joint Ill”. Navel Ill implies an abscess that forms at the stump, and Joint Ill refers to a devastating, crippling, and often life threatening infection that develops in one or more joints in the first few weeks of life. Both of these husbandry practices are certainly valid, and very useful, but compliance does not guarantee that the problems mentioned will not develop. Many foals that receive no colostrums, and do not have attention to their navel, do not ever have a problem, and on the contrary, many that owners go

My rule of thumb is that ANY foal that becomes lame in the first few weeks has joint ill until proven otherwise. In the womb, the foal receives its nutrients and protection via the mars blood system circulating through the foal by way of the placenta and cord. At birth, the cord is broken, and the foal suddenly has to rely on its own resources to survive. In effect, the foal is born without any natural immunity, and it will take several weeks for its immune system to develop and become active. While this is happening, the foal has no antibodies or resistance to infection. Nature’s way is for the mare’s first milk, “colostrum”, to be very rich and chock a block full of antibodies. These are proteins developed in the mare that are concentrated in the milk, and if passed across to the foal, will provide the recipient with a “passive” immunity that will give protection. These antibodies last about 12 weeks before they are degraded, and this timing coincides with the foals own immune system kicking into gear. Proteins are very large molecules or structures that normally when eaten, are broken down into components amino acids by the digestive system to be absorbed and utilised by the body. Nature has provided a “Golden Window” of opportunity for the foal to be able to absorb these very large protein molecules by leaving the mucosal cells in the intestine “wide open” for the first few hours of life so that antibodies can be absorbed. The stimulus for these open cells to close is the suck reflex of the foal. Once the foal has sucked strongly, signals go to the intestine for these cells to close. The problem with the cells being open for antibody absorption, is that other large size structures can also cross the intestinal barrier and enter the foals system. Unfortunately, gram negative bacteria, which are very common in the environment, will take advantage of this opportunity and enter the blood stream. These are deadly to the horse and cause most of the serious foal diseases. continued page 11

Getting immediate treatment In the case of joint ill, the bacteria circulate around the body and filter out in the very vascular and active growth plates of the joints. They establish themselves, multiply, and result in a fully blown infection. This is why it is normally a few weeks before symptoms appear, as the incubation, or establishment phase, takes time. Rest assured, the actual infection almost always occurred in those first few hours when the opportunity presented for the bacteria. In the “normal” foal that sucks quickly, the intestinal cells close before the bacteria have been ingested and been able to cross, and those foals that get a good dose of natural colostrums, have an instant supply of strong antibodies to eradicate any bacteria that do cross. Those foals that take forever to suck, allowing large doses of bacteria to cross, and then receive a dose of artificial colostrums on day 2 or 3, have already had the bacteria colonise in the growth plates and it is often too late. So, what to do when your foal suddenly becomes lame? Panic! This is an emergency and requires immediate treatment. The foal is acutely lame, one or more joints are suddenly very swollen, hot, and inflamed, the foal has a fever, and is dull and depressed. Very high doses of an appropriate antibiotic are essential. The drug must be one capable of penetrating into the growth plates and

joint fluid of the horse. Obviously anti inflammatory drugs to minimise the over reaction of the foal’s body, and to help keep the animal comfortable, are also used. What has now become a very valuable addition to our treatment of these cases is called “Regional Perfusion” of the affected joint. With this, a tourniquet is applied above the joint, and a large dose of antibiotic is injected into a vein below the tourniquet. The tourniquet is left on for 20 – 30 minutes. During this time, an extremely high concentration of antibiotic perfuses into the infected area, ensuring adequate contact with the bacteria, and in most cases, “sterilising” the joint. This treatment has made a remarkable difference to success rates. The other major phase of treatment involves surgical debridement or scraping of the joint, lavaging and flushing the toxic elements out of the joint, and establishing drainage in some cases. Early aggressive treatment can result in a good outcome, but the longer the infection is allowed to establish and progress, the worse the damage and the almost certainty of a crippling arthritis occur. By far the best results can be expected if the owner and veterinarian recognise the potential for a foal possibly developing the problem due to the circumstances surrounding those critical first few hours of life.

The Benefits of Using Rosehips Many of us appreciate the beauty of roses without actually realizing how healthy and beneficial they can be. Seed pods are contained by certain varieties of roses, called rose hips. Did you know that rosehips have been used since ancient Egyptian times and that they were a favourite during the medieval period where they were used to make “syrop of roses” that will “strengthen the heart and taketh away the shaking and trembling thereof”. During World War II, British children would collect tons of rosehips which would be made into jams and sent to soldiers at the front to help provide them with Vitamin C. Rosehips, the bulbous part of the dog rose flower that remains after the blooms have dropped, called the hips, is very high in Vitamin C and is one of the best sources for natural iron, calcium, biotin, pectin, phosphorus, tannin and Vitamins A B1, B2, C, E K and P, just to name a few. The hips are dried and either granulated or simply cut in half to form rosehip shells. They have a pleasant, sweet and tangy taste and can be fed dry or made into a tea. in the rehabilitation of kidney and adrenal function and as a preventative for ‘tying up’. The antioxidant properties contained within rosehips are useful for sustaining a healthy body. Studies have proven that anti-oxidants protect the body against particular illnesses like cancer, arthritis, and cardiovascular diseases. Excessive free radicals result from poor nutrition, pressure, and damaged tissues in both humans and horses. Infections will decrease a horse’s vitamin c levels, and this may also inhibit the development and repair of bone and cartilage tissue. The antioxidants present in rosehips can help to neu-

tralize free radicals and keep your horse healthy. Research by the Osteoarthritis Research Society International confirmed that a protein present in rose hips could help horses by preventing the start of osteoarthritis through boosting the immune-system, hence shielding joint tissue from materials that harm them. The easiest way to feed your horse rosehips is by creating a tea from them. If you’re picking rosehips yourself, once they’ve turned from green to reddish in color, you can pick them. Once they’ve been fully dried, cut them in half and eliminate all the tiny hairs and seeds in the interior of the rosehips. Then you should set them out to dry more. After this boil them in water. After they boiled and cooled take the rosehips from the water, and pour the water into the horse’s grain. An alternative to giving it to them as a tea would be to simply add the rose hips into their feed after you chop them up

The 40th Anniversary Dalby Stock Horse Sale The annual Dalby Stock Horse Sale is celebrating its 40th Anniversary on the weekend of the 5th -7th of December. Entries have now closed for a catalogue of 280 horses compared to 185 last year. The Incentive Drafts and Open Draft will take place on Friday 5th December. A working parade of all horses will take place on Saturday 6th December and the sale will commence at 7am on Sunday 7th December. Better Rewards for Buyers The Incentive Draft competitions have been extended to give past buyers more opportunity to win good prize money. This should give current buyers more confidence to bid on potential Campdraft horses. Graduates of the sale for the past 3 years are now eligible to compete twice instead of just the once. This should attract more numbers and competition. The popular Donrica Stud “Highest scoring gelding, ridden by the owner” continues with $10,000 in the prize pool. 40th Anniversary Celebration The Darling Downs Branch of the ASHS have arranged for “Drinks on the Deck” at the showground pavilion for all ASHS members on Saturday 6th December from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. The pavilion will also

house a display of Dalby Stock Horse Sale memorabilia and a display of rural and equine art. Later in the evening, in the covered arena, a tribute to the Australia Stock Horse will be performed by Rooftop Express. The Grove Bar & Grill will be open for the best Shorthorn steaks during the evening. A live band will then complete the entertainment for the remainder of the night.

Keeping your horse stimulated … By Tanja Kraus Horses are designed to travel for miles each day, grazing, looking for water, etc. We remove them from this by keeping them in confined paddocks, stables and the like. Recently I moved my horses around – I moved my girls from their paddock into the boys paddock and added a horse, and I moved my boys into the girls paddock and reduced their herd numbers. What I noticed in the following few hours was my horses delight in exploring their new surroundings and in the case of my girls – meeting their new paddock mate and establishing the new pecking order. It got me to thinking about how something as simple as changing paddocks got them stimulated and exploring. Three Ingredients to a Truly Broke Horse by Clinton Anderson Many horses are rideable, but few are truly well broke. I define a well broke horse as one who is quiet, dependable, soft and responsive, in any situation – in the arena or on the trail. Of course, many factors go into how far a horse’s training can go, including breeding, temperament and the method in which he is trained, but there’s a secret formula my mentor Gordon McKinlay taught me years ago that is the absolute key to training. “Clinton,” Gordon used to say, “to get a truly broke horse takes three things: long rides, wet saddle pads and concentrated training – and you have to have equal doses of all three.” Is this lesson really a secret? Of course not! The key to it that most people miss, however, is that you must have all three things, balanced in three equal parts. Lots of ranch horses get long rides – they’re ridden all day from sunup to sundown, but they’re stiff as a board in their face and body. Plenty of show horses are soft and supple from all the concentrated training they get, but try taking one out on the trail and he’ll probably half kill you as he reacts to and spooks at everything he sees – scary objects, water, dogs, whatever. And, racehorses almost always come off the track with wet saddle pads, but try to do something with them besides gallop and you’ll see what’s missing in their training. As soon as you have 1/3 that’s bigger than the other 2/3, the formula just doesn’t work as well. However, if you consistently give your horse three equal doses of long rides, wet saddle pads and concentrated training, you’ll have a truly great, soft, supple, respectful and collected horse that you can ride in the arena, compete on, ride out on the trail, use to gather up cattle and know is a safe, dependable partner.

Miniatures on display at Gladstone Extravaganza The National Miniature Register Inc. (NMR) is proud to represent Gladstone's 1st ever Miniature Horse Show to be held over 2 days on the 1st and 2nd November, 2014. The Gladstone Miniature Horse & Pony Extravaganza program consists of a variety of events from Miniature Ponies to Little Horses in Halter, Harness, Novelty, Performance, Costume, Versatility and Youth classes. The Extravaganza will commence on Saturday 1st November at 12.30pm allowing competitors time to arrive and get settled before the Halter classes begin. Each group division will have a Champion and Reserve Champion. The winners will receive a sash and trophy sponsored by Raine and Horne Gladstone. There will be a Supreme Champion Award for each group sponsored by Hutchinson Builders Rockhampton comprising of a garland and trophy. The Grand Champion Horse of the Show will be sponsored by Neilan Quarter Horse & Miniature Stud and will receive a Grand Champion Sash and Rosette, Trophy and $100 cash prize. Harness classes will have the chance to compete for Champion and Reserve Champion and will commence after the judging of Grand Champion Horse of the Show to be followed by the Youth and Adult Costume Class. This will conclude Saturday's events. Sunday, 2nd November will commence at 8am with Youth Performance then open Performance classes. A very diverse program comprising of Lungeline, Trial, Hunter,

Showjumping, 6 Bar and Fault and Out - a great spectacle to observe. An additional inclusion into the program is a 'Versatility' event which is an accumulation of points over the 2 days. The highest point scorer in each division will be awarded a Champion Sash and trophy for their efforts. Champion and Reserve Champion sashes and trophies will be awarded to all group Performance Horse winners, very generously sponsored by Hutchinson Builders Rockhampton. The Gladstone Miniature Horse & Pony Extravaganza will be held at the Gladstone Showgrounds. There are covered stables modified for miniatures (our sincere thanks and gratitude to the Gladstone Show Society for catering to our requirements) and ample camping at a minimal cost. The arena is fully enclosed to contain any would-be runaways. There will be catering available on both days and the showgrounds are within walking distance to the Gladstone's main street if necessary. This broad range of classes will showcase the versatility of these intelligent, kind natured miniature equines. Not only do they provide enormous pleasure to the youth but to the elderly also that are often seen competing in the ring. This show will be a wonderful opportunity for the general public to see the miniature horses in action. Everyone is welcome and public entry is only a gold coin donation. Perfect Pony Club ODE Championship The Pony Club NSW State One Day Event was held at the prestigious Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre, Albury on the weekend of the 27-28th September 2014. According to competitors and event organisers the event, hosted by Pony Clubs located in Zone 20 ran perfectly. Seventy riders travelled from around the State to compete, with the Dressage phase commencing on Saturday morning, cross country in the afternoon and Showjumping on Sunday morning. The Championship concluded on Sunday afternoon with the mounted presentation ceremony. Congratulations to all of the age champions. Eleanor Miller and her horse Kaloona Kaydee from Canberra Riding Club, Zone 16 was the 17 and Under 25 age champion. Rachel Temm riding Tamoru Dom Perignon from Forest Hills Pony Club, Zone 23 was the 15 and Under 17 age champion for the second year in a row. While Matilda Seppelt on her horse Gone Platinum from Londonderry Pony Club, Zone 19 placed first in the 13 and Under 15 age group, also for the second year in a row. In reflection of the event, 17 and Under 25 years age champion Eleanor Miller was particularly impressed with the performance of her horse Kaloona Kaydee. "The highlight for me was knowing that I was on top of an

amazing young horse and that no matter what happened, whether I won or lost I knew that she is only at the beginning of her career. It was the feeling that at the end of the day I knew she had done her best and so had I, and that I was just a little bit luckier than the other two competitors." "I would also like to say that what makes these events amazing, and what makes me always want to come back is the people that attend and how well an event runs. I was lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people and to be included in an event that ran perfectly, including an amazing roast dinner," commented Eleanor. Local Zone 20, hosted a roast dinner at the Equestrian Centre on the Saturday night of the Championship. Dinner was complemented with entertainment and special guest speakers, equestrians Prue Barrett and Teagan Ashby much to the delight of the competitors and their families. Thank you to all of the individuals who made this event possible, including the officials, volunteers, judges, announcers and in particular Zone 20 pony clubs for hosting this championship. Consider your horse's entire nutrition before adding supplements. By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist What is in your feed room currently, are there containers of various herbal concoctions, vitamin supplements etc. Supplements have become much more a part of general health care these days, very different to many years ago when horses were just fed oats and hay. It is well worth considering; does your horse really need a supplement and if he or she does then is it the right one? The most endearing feature of

supplements is the flexibility of being used in many different ways. Supplements can be beneficial with horses that suffer from joint issues, pain and muscle soreness etc. They can also be used for nervous horses to assist with tenseness, they can be used to assist with weight or help with a hormonal imbalances. Certainly they do have their uses and in my profession as an Equine Nutritionist and Medical Herbalist results can be very exciting, but my concern as always is the health of the horse. As horse owners, many of us take supplements every day, like the general population, but in many cases do not know why they are taking them? Glossy magazine ads and TV commercials can be very convincing. There is no doubt that from a scientific point of view certain types of supplements can be enormously beneficial. If a horse is fed a well balanced diet, does the horse require a daily supplement? The answer is probably yes. Over recent years, research in Australia and overseas has provided more accurate guidelines on the nutritional requirements of horses and how they alter in

relation to growth, exercise or reproductive requirement. Analysis of feeds gathered from different localities and climates, has proven that there are low or inadequate levels of certain nutrients, which can affect the health and performance of a horse. In some cases, individual nutrients provided in feeds are imbalanced or in excess of needs and, if not corrected, can be detrimental to a horse's well being. Important note: older horses not working with access to good quality pasture may obtain an adequate intake of major nutrients, minerals and vitamins to meet their needs, but more often than not they may still require some form of supplementation. Important note: Research has proven that soils in Australia that have been constantly producing feed, whether it be hays or grain have depleted nutrient levels in the soil, leaving produce grown in these areas sadly deficient in many important vitamins and minerals. The salinity level has also risen, and the overuse of pesticides has also contributed to nutrient deficient

soils. Is there a risk of over-supplementing? There are many nutritional supplements on the market for horses; most contain simple minerals, which are poorly absorbed and utilised by the horse and then are required at high levels to provide some support. Colt Starting Challenge comes to Dalby Dalby will be the host to the 2014 “Unique Horseman” professional colt starting challenge and the The National Rodeo COuncil Finals on the weekend of November 7, 8 and 9. The excitment kicks off on 9am Friday morning with the “Unique Horseman” an event that will showcase some of the best horseman and horsewomen in Australia. The “Unique Horseman” is an event of which 6 competitors are given an unbroken horse and 2 hours a day, for 2 days to work Brett Welsh with and on the 3rd day have 45minutes to ride it through a set pattern and finish with Young Guns comtender freestyle. Competitors will be judges on how quiet and willing they can have their horse perform htere set tasks. Throughout the cometition the general public will have the chance to see different techniques, ask questions and gain knowledge. Brett Welsh and Brendon Clarke will compete against our only female contestant Ester Cruckshank for the title of “Young Guns”. The 3 competitors are our rising stars of the Equine world and are very competant and talented young horse people. Ron Wall, Mick Aspinall and Brett Peel are our most experienced horseman and will compete for the title od “Legend” Friday and Saturday nights will see all the thrills and spills of Rodeo with competitors from all across Australia vying for the titles in their respective events.
