NSW Government rebate assists in sporting costs What is the Active Kids Rebate program? The NSW Government will provide a rebate through a voucher system to parents/guardians of school enrolled children. The $100 voucher can be used for registration and participation costs for sport and fitness activities. The initiative will reduce the barriers to participation and help change the physical activity behaviours of children and young people in NSW. The majority of children and adolescents in NSW are not meeting the daily recommended levels of physical activity. In 2015, more than one in five children in NSW was overweight or obese. Who is eligible to claim the voucher? Every family in NSW with a child enrolled in school from Kindergarten to Year 12 will be eligible for the Active Kids Rebate. It will not be means tested and one voucher will be available for every child in the family
Assistance is for all forms of sport and fitness activities including equestrian competitions annually over the next four years.There will be no limits on the number of applications per family, as long as every child is enrolled in school. What can the voucher be used for? The voucher can be used for registration or membership fees for after-school, weekend sport and structured physical activity programs, including swimming lessons, from a wide range of providers. The vouchers will be redeemable through approved sport, fitness and physical
activity providers upon registration. Who will administer the program? The Office of Sport will work in partnership with Treasury and Service NSW to implement the systems required to enable families to access their voucher through an on-line process. The Office of Sport will work closely with approved sport, fitness and physical activity providers to support the largely volunteer workforce in implementing streamlined sys-
tems to allow users to redeem their vouchers upon registration. When will the program be introduced? From January 2018 families will be able to claim their voucher/s online from the NSW Government. Equestrian focus on drug-free awareness Equestrian Australia (EA) will be working closely with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) and introducing random drug testing at events throughout Australia moving forward. They are focussed on building awareness of the importance of drug-free competition at all EA sanctioned events as well as improving member safety and horse welfare. As highlighted in EA's Strategic Plan 2017-2020, it is a priority for equestrian sport's National Federation to promote safe, fair and drug-free competition and develop sound policy and process to manage and monitor member safety. EA urges all riders, stable staff and owners involved in equestrian sport to diligently study and observe anti-doping guidelines as set out by ASADA and the FEI, as well as the Equestrian Australia AntiDoping policy which can all be found here http://www.equestrian.org.au/content/cleansport-humans From March 31st 2018, all EA coaches will have completed a

minimum of the ASADA online Level 1 anti-doping course which can be located at https://elearning.asada.gov.au/ in order to renew their coaching memberships. However, EA also invites any equestrian member to take the free, online course that takes just over one hour to complete. Officials will continue to be vigilant and will follow a strict reporting procedure at all EA sanctioned events should they be concerned about any athlete's welfare in relation to any form of substance abuse. This initiative is aimed at helping to ensure that competitors present themselves and their horses at all events drug-free and uphold the values of clean sport at all times.

Arena cost cutting can prove to be expensive BY TODD CUNNINGHAM Equestrian Land Developments Pty Ltd More often than not arena rebuilds are required as a result of poorly designed and constructed bases or from the use of unsuitable materials all in the effort to cut costs. Outlined are a few points to consider when designing and constructing your arena. Correct and quality earthworks are key. Getting your sister’s best friend’s uncle who owns a Drott up the road to do the work for a carton of beer, isn't always the ideal way to start out your construction. This is the stage where the site is chosen, drainage is planned and designed and will determine how your arena will work on completion. Full survey is paramount - getting the falls right and the exact measurements you require is key. More often than not, ELD arrive onsite for a consultation where the earthworks are already done and the customer is adamant the measurements are 20m x 60m - when measured correctly these are often not even close. Depending on the cut required for the job you will need to take into consideration the batters and drainage outside of the arena, so cutting a neat 20m x 60m rectangle is only the beginning. Use only quality assured materials for your arena construction. Cutting costs at this stage of the build will only result in failure down the track.
The use of quality materials and earthworks are the key to a good surface
Never continue construction during or after wet weather as this will guarantee failure of the sub-structure in the future. Compaction is vital - any tracks left in the base layers now will result in an uneven riding surface later. The European concept of the use of drainage systems underneath rarely works in our Australian climate. We tend to get heavy downpours rather than light misting rain events. These designs do not cope with this kind of extremes in weather. The ELD design which has been successfully used since it's design and inception by myself in 2000, consists of two base layers. The first layer supplies the solid foundation for the build, while the second layer (or Blinding Layer) is a 'protective' layer to stop
the rock in the base layer rolling through the surface. This is often another reason arenas require rebuilding - rock appearing through the surface and causing stone bruises and other lameness issues in horses. The second layer can also be altered to suit the discipline the arena will be used for. Should the arena be used for Western events, such as reining, where a good slide distance is paramount, a treatment may be applied to the materials to ensure this layer is going to stand up to constant wear and tear of an extreme nature. Dressage will require a slightly different treatment to Show Jumping as the requirements in the training and performance differ. Control erosion and ground stabilisation When ever you have areas where livestock congregate, you will have soil and pasture erosion and in wet weather, mud and lots of it. In high traffic areas, hooves loosen topsoil and compact the soil below. The soil compaction increases until eventually the rainwater, unable to penetrate and filter down through the soil, collects and pools on top, mixing with the topsoil and any organics. This usually is mostly manure but it can also include hay and shavings. This blend of ingredients - water, soil and manure - is a recipe for mud. Muddy footing in horse turnout areas not only increases the difficulty of daily barn chores and grooming routines for owners but creates a living environment for your horse that is neither safe nor healthy. As well as providing an ideal breeding ground for insects, bacteria and fungi that can cause abscesses, scratches, rain scald, mud fever, greasy heel and thrush, muddy footing in horse paddocks can also lead to lost horseshoes, soft hooves and injuries caused by slipping and sliding on the wet and muddy footing. Additionally, feeding your horse on a muddy surface can result in ingestion of dirt or sand particles that could cause colic. Muddy paddocks can also have a negative environmental impact. Water runoff containing soil and traces of

Dealing with wolf teeth in young horses By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Wolf teeth, or otherwise known as bridle teeth, are often a question of concern in owners of young horses. The general consensus is that your young horse should have them removed before breaking. However, I will outline exactly why this thought process exists and why it isn’t always the best course of action. Firstly, what are wolf teeth and why do they exist in our horses? Wolf teeth are the remains of the ancient horse’s first premolar. Ancient fossils tell us that horses used to have seven molars with which to grind. This is attributed to the fact that the horse used to survive primarily in forest landscapes and eat bush-like food, much more like goats and sheep. When they migrated onto the plains and started consuming rougher grasses, their molars compensated by becoming bigger and flatter, making it easier to grind the rough grasses. Their first premolar became somewhat obsolete and today’s tiny wolf tooth is the result of this evolvement. Nowadays the wolf tooth pokes through just in front of the horse’s first premolar by the age of one and they are completely useless to the horse’s masticatory needs. About 70% of horses will get wolf teeth, sometimes two (bilateral), sometimes only one (unilateral). They can be found most often in the upper jaw, but the occasional horse will also develop them in their lower jaw, however, this is much more rare. Blind wolf teeth refer to wolf teeth that develop under the gum and never erupt. So, why are these little teeth a
problem and what will your dentist do about them? The consensus up until now has been to remove all wolf teeth in bitted horses. Wolf teeth are sensitive teeth, sitting in innervated gum and often with very little root holding them in place. In fact, if wolf teeth are not extracted, a lot of wolf teeth will eventually fall out around the age of 10, give or take. The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit. When a bit is in the horse’s mouth, it shouldn’t touch the premolars unless pulled dramatically back in the mouth. Racing and polo stables tend to routinely remove all wolf teeth before breaking due to the nature of the sport- involving quite hard hand-to-mouth contact which can pull the bit far enough back so as to contact the teeth. In pleasure and other sport horses, however, a new approach is slowly being adopted. When any tooth erupts in the horse’s mouth, the longer it has to erupt, the easier and kinder it is to extract. For example, pulling a molar out of a five-year-old will be a much bigger and intrusive job than pulling it out of a 25-year-old. The same principle exists for wolf teeth and it is this concept that is making some qualified dentists rethink the previous ‘extract-every-wolf-tooth’ practise.
The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit.
Every horse is different and every wolf tooth is different. Some are a lot firmer, while others are very loose, some are bigger and will affect the horse more, and others no bigger than the tip of a match head. In today’s equine dentistry world, the phrase ‘less-is-more’ is being practised increasingly often. As with the grinding of the sharp points, the less your dentist can intrude with the horse’s natural grinding surface, the better. Remembering that this industry is relatively young, new information and concepts are being discussed and researched all the time. Therefore, what was once the assumed practice of pulling wolf teeth out of every horse is now being replaced by a case-by-case analysis. If a young horse is going to be broken and the impact of their wolf teeth is negligible in regards to the contact this horse will have with the bit, then leaving the wolf teeth a little longer will only make the entire
process less invasive for the horse. Especially if the horse is likely to be broken, then left for a while, less is definitely more when it comes to extracting teeth from a young horse’s mouth. While it is a known consequence that wolf teeth can affect the ridden horse, more often then not their removal can be left until a slightly older age, by which time the teeth will be fully erupted and relatively easy to remove. This is something I discuss with each individual owner, explaining the pros and cons of both courses of action. A young horse should be seen by a qualified dentist every six months, at which point the state of the wolf teeth in question, the amount of work the horse is doing, and the behaviours of the horse under saddle are all reevaluated. Dentistry is now more than ever an industry of horsemen and women evaluating the best course of action for your individual horse. There is no hard and fast answer.

We are going to examine the amounts of protein required in a horse's diet and the various sources available. Proteins are made up of amino acids. Protein is required to receive the correct amount of amino acids in the horse's diet. These amino acids are distributed amongst the cells to be reassembled back into protein. There are many functions that protein serves in the equine body, some are required as structural members, some are enzymes and others are hormones. They are used as a transport vehicle for other molecules and are extremely important for the immune system. They can also be catabolised to produce energy. Amino acids are the building blocks of life and are critical for the horse's survival. Protein becomes extremely important as a nutritional source daily. Proteins are made up of 20 amino acids. These amino acids have an amazing number of different proteins that can be constructed. There are as many as 400 several types of dipeptides and 8000 several types of tripeptides. The molecules of amino acids are quite small and they are characterised by the amino acid group which is part of their structure. They do also contain a carboxyl group. The most significant part of metabolism is the nitrogen part of the amino acid molecule. This part of the molecule is the one that gives amino acids their name. If there is a shortage of protein in the diet there will therefore be a shortage of nitrogen, this could be catastrophic for the horse. Nitrogen is not the only part of the amino acid needed in the metabolic process - there are many more roles that these molecules play. The amino acids include glycine, alanine, cysteine, serine, threonine, methionine, valine, leucine,
and are around 40% protein. Some types of hay and pasture contain higher levels of protein than others; this will depend on where the hays are produced and the species of hay. Lucerne hay for example, can have protein as high as 23%. Grains naturally vary with their level of protein, barley being one of the highest available and oats being one of the lowest. Studies suggest that a working horse does not require elevated levels of protein as opposed to a horse that is in light work. Work certainly does increase the need for protein as it is used as part of the energy requirement. Overfeeding protein is undesirable as it puts pressure on the removal of nitrogen from the horse's body and the increase in blood urea may be detrimental to the horse. Points to remember by overfeeding protein include, increased water requirements with an increased level of protein, urea levels will increase in the blood which can lead to a greater urea excretion into the gut. This may increase the risk of digestive disturbances. The final problem may be an increase in blood ammonia - this can cause many problems which include nerve irritability, and disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism. If there is an increase of ammonia excretion in the urine it may also lead to respiratory problems from a build up of ammonia in stabled horses. All types of feed contain protein, this includes grazing, hays, supplemented forms of protein and grains. It is very important to ensure that your horse has the correct intake of protein to suit his individual needs. A good source of protein can also assist with increasing weight in poor horses. loaded. Trauma results in local cell damages and disruption. This disruption discharges cell chemicals into the surrounding tissues and some of these chemicals are extremely toxic and it is these toxic waste products that irritate and cause the inflammation. The local environment, as a result of inflammation, becomes extremely unhealthy for tissue survival and so cartilage deteriorates and results in arthritis. Polysulfated glycosaminoglycans act as an anti-inflammatory agent and this is how they exert their effect. In a similar manner to phenylbutazone, corticosteroids, and many other compounds, they can "mop up" the toxic chemicals and absorb them, thereby stopping the cause of inflammation. The local tissue therefore remains healthier and more conducive to the repair and production of normal cartilage by the chondrocytes and reducing the deterioration. All these different anti-inflammatory agents act in slightly different ways and can work on different chemicals in the toxic pathway. Phenylbutazone and corticosteroids are certainly much more potent but PSAG's are able to make a valuable contribution. Now, with an understanding of how Cartrophen and Co. are likely to exert an effect, perhaps it is opportune to review how these products are to be used. Classically the products are used to treat a relatively acute onset of degenerative joint disease. The recommendations are to administer one injection a week for three to five weeks, along with whatever other medications are deemed appropriate by the treating vet. I certainly have very strong reservations about any real benefits from the ad hoc use of injections once a month. continued page 21

Understanding different anti-infammatories  from page 20 What is of far more benefit is to administer some of the related products available daily in the horses' feed. There are a myriad of products available, all variously marketed under the guise of "joint food". Glucosamine is the primary essential ingredient involved. Chondroitin is also included in a lot of the products. This a more potent drug than glucosamine but there is some very real question about the bioavailability of chondroitin. The suspicion is that chondroitin is very poorly absorbed from the intestines, and any that is, is immediately processed and broken down by the liver and so none is actually available to act at the joint sites. Glucosamine on the other hand, is very readily absorbed and available and so is the most important productâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; One injection of 10ml Cartrophen delivers 1gm of PSAG. One injection of Pentosan has 1.5gm of ingredient. These minute amounts are given once a month. Daily feeding of glucosamine at the recommended minimum rate of 10gms per day obviously delivers much more product at a continuous rate and, if we refer back to the mode of action, is much more likely to be of value because the toxic products are being released daily, and need to be absorbed daily to prevent their action in causing DJD. Cartrophen, Pentosan, Zydax, glucosamine, and chondroitin are all from the same family of compounds and all have a similar type of action. It is much more likely to be beneficial to administer a large dose of the anti-inflammatory compounds daily than a small dose once a month. The injectable products are all expensive. In my view, they should be used as part of an aggressive intensive program to help turn around an acute onset of arthritis. Where they do have a definite use and can be of some very real value is to give as a bolus dose of anti-inflammatory drug prior to a competition. My recommendation, if this situation applies, is to give it approx 48 hours before the event. Oral supplements - Glucosamine Probably the most common and useful ingredient in joint supplements is glucosamine. It is present in supplements either as glucosamine hydrochlorides or glucosamine sulphates.
Anti-inflammatory treatments can have different effects and produce different outcomes depending on the cause of the ailment.
The former is a more concentrated form of glucosamine containing more per gram than the sulphates. Glucosamine is a vital precursor to both the synthesis of collagen and polysulphated glycosaminoglycans, (PsGAG), in joint cartilage and the production of hyaluronic acid, (HA). It is also a dominant ingredient of joint fluid and an important component of joint cartilage. PsGAGs are an essential component of proteoglycan, (PG), which makes up articular cartilage. HA is the key to the lubricating properties of joint fluid and the elasticity and shock absorbing properties of joint cartilage. Glucosamine most importantly reduces inflammation by inhibiting destructive enzymes and scavenging free radicals that destroy the cartilage matrix integrity resulting in inflammation and pain. This pain killing activity is a genuine modification of the disease process and not simply a pain killing effect. In man, glucosamine is the oral supplement of choice for the management of osteoarthritis. The beneficial effects of glucosamine may take up to three weeks to occur and glucosamine is very safe making it suitable for long term use. Chondroitin Sulphate With respect to chondroitin sulphate, (CS), absorption is debatable due to its very large molecular weight, (size). CS is typically obtained from bovine, whale, or shark cartilage. Several studies have characterized the absorption as low. CS is the primary PsGAG that makes up the
PG found in joint cartilage. It is known that joint injury and the ensuing inflammation causes a reduction in the amount of PG. Thus CS could theoretically help replace PG. CS has also been proposed to inhibit the action of some enzymes associated with the breakdown of joint cartilage breakdown and to have general anti inflammatory properties. Data to support the proposed actions of CS in in vitro studies have shown positive results. Definitive data to document the effect of CS in living horses is not available now. Data in other models, (humans, rats, and dogs) do not automatically hold true for horses. So the jury is still out with respect to CS and its influence on joint health in horses. Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) and Methionie Methionine, a sulphur bearing amino acid, is converted to an important component of connective tissue, called sadenosylmethionoine, (SAM). SAM has been used successfully in the treatment of osteoarthritis in humans. Unfortunately SAM is expensive but it's precursors are not. Methionine is a catalyst that aids in the metabolism of glucosamine to PsGAGs. The sulphur supplied by methionine is also used in the synthesis of collagen, which gives strength to connective tissue and cartilage. MSM is a source of organic sulphur and has been suggested to have an anti inflammatory effect, but there is no data to substantiate how much is required for this effect. In a future discussion, I will review other forms of joint medication.

Creating lateral bend and fitness in the horse By TANJA KRAUS Lateral fitness is something that we often overlook. From a young horse perspective, we may establish a 'lateral bend' as a response to the rein, and to ensure we have a 'bend' in the horse if things get a little 'hairy'. Often this 'lateral bend' is not a true, or complimentary bend in its benefits to the horse, its rather a 'safety bend'. As our horse progresses in his education, we require a true lateral bend, that is, a bend that begins with the ears remaining level (we want no tilting of the head, or twisting of the neck), stretching down through the nuchal ligament, through the horse’s body, with the ribs rolling to the correct side of the bend, the stretch continuing through the supraspinous ligament, an engagement of the hind, to allow the hind legs to 'track up' and create the pathway necessary for the vertical flexion, and ultimately the correct collection we desire. Our horses are unable to jump straight from a 'safety bend' to a correct lateral bend, we must build the exercise and slowly build the horses understanding of our need of the correct lateral bend. Success at Interschool Championships Recently 320 riders and 350 horses competed at the Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Championships held in Toowoomba with the event being a resounding success. “The event brought out great sportsmanship, excellent horsemanship and well loved and cared for horses,” Equestrian Queensland Chairman David Finch said. “The energy and camaraderie shown was fantastic. “To see more than 300 competitors still smiling and happy at the end of a week of tough weather conditions was heartwarming. Congratulations to everyone involved.” . Queensland was victorious in the team event winning the prestigious Harry Le Bherz Perpetual Trophy with 2743 points. NSW finished second (2613 points) and Victoria was third (2197 points), WA fourth (984 points), SA fifth (568 points) and the smallest teams, the NT (222 points) and TAS (145 points) produced a commendable result with less than a handful of riders each. The NT took home the Teamwork Trophy for best team spirit and teamwork. Cox Plate immortality for champion Winx Winx etched her name into the record books when she held out a determined challenge from Humidor for a famous WS Cox Plate win at Moonee Valley. In becoming just the second three time winner of the Australasian weight-for-age championship, Winx notched a 15th Group One win to draw level with former sprinting superstar Black Caviar. And the $1.85 million haul for winning pushes Winx well past Makybe Diva to become the highest stakes earning horse in Southern Hemisphere racing history with an earnings tally of over $15.6 million. For good measure, Winx broke her own track record - shaving four hundredths of a second from the previous fastest ever race run over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley. A little worse than midfield throughout, Bowman edged the mare outside of runners going down the side and by the time she had turned for home she was level with the leaders. After racing to the front in the straight Winx was challenged by multiple Group One winner Humidor, but under the urgings of Hugh Bowman she held out that runner for welcomed win. "It was a big build up and post time couldn't come quick enough," a proud Bowman said. "It just means so much to so many people." "Look at the crowd. I've never seen anything like it." "She will go down in history as one of the greatest horses to have ever graced the Australian turf," Bowman added. An emotional Chris Waller told reporters after the race he was proud to have trained his champion to another history making success. "It was pretty close in the end," Waller said. "But you expect that in a Cox Plate." "You don't expect any horse to win 22 races in a row. I'm so pleased she's done it for the crowd and also for the horse (to do it for herself)." "I'm blessed to be in this position. Life has plenty of ups and downs and I have a couple of friends doing it pretty tough at the moment, so this is very special."

Winx was purchased by Magic Bloodstock at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $230,000 - a daughter of influential international sire Street Cry. She is from the triple stakes winning Al Akbar mare Vegas Showgirl - herself purchased off the track as a breeding prospect at the National Broodmare Sale for Fairway Thoroughbreds. Winx is raced by Magic Bloodstock's Peter Tighe in partnership with Debbie Kepitis and Richard Treweeke. She was bred by the Camilleri family of Fairway Thoroughbreds. While she was the clear highlight - Winx wasn't the only Magic Millions graduate to taste success at Moonee Valley's biggest meeting. Three others were winners - Gun Case, Eptimum and Lucky Hussler - all starring at the famous meeting.
Eptimum and Lucky Hussler were both group winners on the day, winning the Red Anchor Stakes and Crystal Mile respectively. Gold Coast trained Eptimum will be set for the $10 million Magic Millions Raceday on January 13 after stretching his winning run to three in his Group Three feature for Toby Edmonds. The son of Snitzel was purchased by Edmonds from the draft of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at the 2016 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Later in the afternoon Darren Weir saddled up proven Group One winner Lucky Hussler to win the Group Two Crystal Mile his 10th win and pushing earnings past $2.13 million. Lucky Hussler (Husson) was a Valley View Heights Management purchase from Monarch Stud at the 2011 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. For good measure the other MM graduate in the race, Religify was second.

Equine Therapy for wholeness and well-being By JANE FAULKNER Director, Equine Assisted Therapy Australia
Horses have helped people for centuries, we covered large distances, started trading with other cultures, farmed, went to war all on the back of a horse. Only 100 years ago, horses were an integral part of many families providing a livelihood and a chance to travel, they have also always provided companionship and support to those in need. Horses encourage us to calm down, breath and be present, for many of us in today's fast paced world this is a new experience. We are used to working everything out with our heads - we use our intellect to navigate the world, this often means being out of touch with our bodies and the natural world around us. It may also mean that you are out of touch with how you feel and what you need and therefore, live with a lot of anxiety, tension and chaos. We work out what we need from feeling - as we breathe into and experience being inside our bodies we work out who we are. When we only operate from our intellect we try to work things out by watching how others respond to us and by trying to perceive what everyone else wants from us - we live from the outside in. This mode of living may mean that you feel like you have no control and that life just happens to you. Horses live from the inside out, they feel

Unlocking the stifle Lame in the shoulder, sore in the back and lame in the stifle would easily be the most common suggestions made by owners when reporting that their horses are lame. In most case, none of the above are correct. Stifles, although rare, can very definitely, be a source of lameness. Owner's love to blame these areas because they are relatively complicated structures that even if they are the source of pain, rarely, if ever, display any visible or obvious clinical signs. The foot and pastern, would easily account over 90% of the lameness that horses sustain. The foot also, rarely if ever displays obvious signs but for some inexplicable reason, owners love to blame the shoulder, back or stifle. This is why proper clinical examination of a lame horse is essential to properly diagnose the cause of lameness and in most cases, positive confirmation of the source of lameness
localising nerve blocks is essential. The stifle in the horse is the equivalent of the human knee. The joint in the horse is anatomically and structurally very similar to the human joint but functionally is very different. The human knee is a major direct weight bearing structure but the angulation of the joint in the horse serves to remove a lot of the direct load on the joint in that species. Horses have exactly the same structures such as the menisci or cartilages that are such a bane to footballers and other athletes and ligaments such as cruciates but problems in these structures are rare. By far the most common cause of problem in the horse is related to a function of the stifle in that animal that does not occur in other species. The horse has the ability to `lock’ the stifle in position by hooking one of the patella ligaments over a prominently projecting ridge of bone on the bottom of the femur. This is part of the `stay’ apparatus of the horse which allows the horse to sleep

function of the patella. Any factor that causes these muscles to lose their conditioning can result in dysfunction. It is very common for horses to develop locking stifles in the winter when the climate is cold. Particularly, it will show first thing in the morning when the horse first comes out of the stall. The horse very commonly warms up and the lameness disappears. There-in lays the primary key to treatment. Proper conditioning and exercise will almost always result in correction of the problem. There is no proper prescription for exercise. Sufficient to say that trainers should analyse what the horse has been recently doing and make some adjustment. Very often this is over-training and a period of reduction in effort, particularly where stress is placed on the hind legs, is all that is necessary. The correct training term is LSD - long slow distance - and trail riding and such is usually best. The definitive treatment is surgically transecting the medial patella ligament. This is a relatively common procedure but owners of performance horses should obtain very detailed and specific advice before agreeing to cut the patella ligaments of their horse. I personally have performed the operation many hundreds of times and do not believe I have had any permanent problems, but the procedure is very prone to complications and post operative management is critical. There are no effective drug treatments. Some drugs are often attributed success, but remember, I have said many horses self cure and there are many false reports of cures by many modalities but most are simply the condition self correcting. The stifle joint in the horse is also very prone to OCD. This is a developmental disease correctly known as osteochondrosis dissecans where fragments of cartilage may become loose in the joint, or even more seriously in the horse, cysts may develop. These conditions are easily diagnosed by x-ray.

while still standing up. This ensures a horse is always ready to flee from danger as a primary form of defence. In some horses, there is a relative lack of angulation in the stifle, and structurally the medial trochlear ridge of the femur, (the prominent ridge of bone), is larger than normal and it is possible for the patella ligament to become actually locked, the horse is unable to free the ligament, and consequently, the horse cannot bend the limb. The stifle really does become locked. I have actually seen some horses that have been locked for several days in both legs and are unable to move. Fortunately this degree of affliction is rare. The correct name for this condition is `upward fixation of the patella’. In most cases, the locked patella can be relatively easily freed by manipulation but if the condition occurs in a particular horse, then because it is a conformational predisposition, owners can be reasonably concerned as that horse will be prone to reoccurrence. What occurs much more frequently however is a `catching’ patella or partial upward fixation. In these cases, the ligament temporarily becomes caught and then frees itself. This results in a `hitching’ of the leg or more commonly, the horse stumbles on that particular leg. This is a quite common presentation in horses. It is probably more a functional abnormality rather than a truly painful lameness. It can, however, be quite disruptive and deleterious to performance. Specific treatment is difficult. Fortunately the condition can be intermittent and sporadic `self cure’ usually occurs. The onset of partial intermittent fixation is usually related to some form of stress. Loss of weight, over-training and some other primary lameness can often trigger catching of the stifle. The condition is directly related to the muscle tone of the quadriceps muscles which control the

NSW Team shines at Pony Club Nationals The Pony Club Australia National Championships were held at Toowoomba Showgrounds from the 18th 22nd September. NSW sent a team of 50 riders selected from clubs across the state to compete in Showjumping, Dressage, Eventing, Tetrathlon, Mounted Games, Formal Gymkhana and Pony Club Quiz. Pony Club NSW President Wayne Pernice said the riders are a credit to their clubs, zones and association. "Riders not only demonstrated their ability to compete at a national level but showed what terrific ambassadors they are for our state," he said. The NSW Team consisted of riders from all over the state, from as far as Milton on the far south coast, out to Griffith in the south-west. Competitors arrived over the weekend where they were camping at the showgrounds or staying in nearby motels. The team gathered on Sunday afternoon for the trot up and team managers meeting before

Social games were held on the first evening of competition with all riders taking part in team building activities to get to know each other. One of the first results from the Championships was the Invitational Medium Dressage Test for riders that are competing at medium or higher level. NSW's own Phoebe Wilkinson from Hills District Pony Club in Zone 26 rode Greenoaks Munich to place first. All other disciplines were spread over the week of competition with NSW obtaining many great scores including; * Belle Edwards from Brunswick Valley Pony Club placed second in the Junior Dressage Championship * Rachael Temm from Forest Hills Pony Club was awarded the Senior Eventing Champion, placing first overall * William Wood from Armidale Pony Club claimed first and Jorja Power from Walcha Pony Club placed second in the Junior Formal Gymkhana, gaining the Champion team award for

A formal dinner was held on the Wednesday evening where competitors, team managers and family members gathered over a sit down meal, heard from some guest speakers and enjoyed the fun atmosphere. Pony Club Australia made a formal presentation to announce the winners of the 2017 National Pony Club Awards which saw two NSW members recognised for their achievements and dedication towards Pony Club. Rebecca Cameron from Armidale Pony Club in Zone 13 was awarded the Best achievement by a rider aged 17-25 years, while Carole Hodges from Tele Point Pony Club in Zone 9 was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award. NSW will be next to host the Pony Club Australia National Championships in 2019 with preparations already underway. Those who would like to

It is with great sadness that I offer 'Mel' for sale. She is for sale due to no fault of her own and is only on the market as her rider has outgrown her and is moving onto a hack. Mel is a royal quality pony and has attended Sydney, Canberra, Bathurst and Melbourne Royals as well as various interschool competitions and pony club in recent years. She is easy to catch, float and clip and is excellent for the farrier and vet. She is suitable as a second pony for a younger rider looking to gain experience in the show ring. She requires no working down even at major events and rarely comes home without a ribbon.
