Residents ready for ‘race that stops the nation’ Imagine if you got to experience the excitement of the iconic Melbourne Cup trophy before the winners did. Such was the case when Bupa Aged Care South Hobart residents Judith Marsh and Barbara Arnold got to hold the trophy during a recent visit to the home. "It was exciting to think that we had access to the trophy before the trainer, the owner and the jockey had seen it or touched it,” Ms Marsh said. The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, which in addition to Tasmania as part of its Australian tour included a stop over to Portland and has also travelled across the Nullarbor Plain by train, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Seoul. Wendy Green, the owner of the 1999 Cup, spoke to Bupa residents about her experiences about travelling home to Darwin following her horse Rogan Josh's win in the Melbourne Cup. "Wendy Green was a wonderful speaker, she told us of a story about a new born who had not yet been christened, and decided that they would christen him with champagne instead,” she

is from the comfort of their own home. “I am a Tasmanian, but I lived in Melbourne for most of my working life," she said. “I love the atmosphere that the Melbourne Cup creates. “The horses are majestic creatures but for me, the real fun is in watching the fashion.” The 91-year-old said that in her years attending races, she has noticed that fascinators are still hot in the scene and hoped the tradition would continue. "I was never part of Melbourne’s elite but always loved getting dressed up as if I was,”she said. "I got dressed up for the visit but decided to leave my fascinator aside for the actual Cup day, don’t get me wrong, I was still dolled up for the occasion." Bupa’s South Hobart Recreational Activities Officer Deb Rose, who organised the event said the visit was a highlight for everyone in the home. “Alongside my colleagues, I was fortunate enough to come into contact with the 18 carat gold Melbourne Cup and I felt honoured to be able to share a piece of that excitement with our residents,” she said.

Coffs Coast brumby sanctuary is worth seeing By MELISSA RIMAC A roguishly handsome, solid buckskin Adam is quite the charmer. He's not shy about planting a kiss on your cheek - on request of course. He also knows how to shake hands, take a bow and answer 'yes' or 'no' to questions. And the cheeky glint in his eye suggests there's no telling what he'll do next. Affable and super-clever, Adam is a far cry from what many people associate with brumbies. And yet Adam, along with the other stunning 'brums' rescued by Save The Brumbies, is just one fine example of Australia's Heritage Horse. As horse-minded travellers to the Coffs Coast- Bellingen area are welcome to do by appointment, I'm visiting the Save The Brumbies sanctuary. All around me are plump, contented horses - striking bays, chestnuts, and a few pale palominos, as well as 'paints' and piebalds. Adam and his friends are a testament to the commitment and

horsemanship skills of Jan Carter, founder of Save the Brumbies, a registered charity borne in reaction to the horrific aerial shooting of hundreds of brumbies in the Guy Fawkes National Park in 2000. "Brumbies are highly intelligent, tough and sturdy horses, they're low maintenance and with gentle handling have proved themselves to be superior in many ways to domestic breeds; for

instance they're ideal for endurance, cattle mustering, pony club- just about anything," Jan said. Save the Brumbies takes in horses from the Guy Fawkes and Oxley Wild Rivers National Parks - they are horses related to Australia's World War One equine heroes. The strong boned, sure-footed and solid Guy Fawkes brumbies are renowned for their creamy,

pale palomino colours as well as pale buckskins and 'paints'. Brumbies from the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park are generally more refined in conformation, suggesting thoroughbred lines, with 'paints', greys and blacks being common. "Brumbies respond well to nonthreatening, gentle training and teach the handler mostly more than the handler teaches them," Jan said. "This is due to their high intelligence and willingness to trust and be at one with their human. Every horse responds but it can vary depending on personality, some can be haltered and leading in a few days; some may take more time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually it is the smarter horses that take longer to adjust to domesticity, but given time and correct management they can become superb riding and companion horses." Both the Bellingen and Armidale Save The Brumbies sanctuaries feature events such as open days and handling demonstrations and have horses completing in local shows. Â continued page 5

Visit the brumbies and explore the region from page 4 Not surprisingly, mascot Adam is a big hit on the show circuit and at sanctuary events. At any one time STB can be caring for between 30 to 40 horses at their main New England Brumby Sanctuary situated near Armidale. The smaller sanctuary - situated near the picturesque arty village of Bellingen - specialises in horses requiring a higher level of care. These special horses are involved in a sponsorship program and horse lovers are invited to become a part of the horses' rehabilitation and ongoing care. Some sponsorship packages include overnight accommodation packages at the stunningly located Bellingen Sanctuary. Potential Adoptees are carefully assessed for an optimal humanhorse pairing. All STB horses available for adoption are well handled, float trained, gelded and primed for further education. They're also registered with the Australian Brumby Horse Register

A little to the north from here is Sapphire Beach, where we watched whales breaching. Brumbies - The Australian Heritage Brumby is a unique equine and epitomizes the spirit of freedom, roaming through rugged bush land and the harsh outback areas of Australia where they are free to run wild and survive in extreme conditions. The largest numbers range freely throughout the Northern Territory, Queensland and northern Western Australia as these States contain the most undeveloped and least populated areas of Australia. Contrary to the perceived belief that the Heritage Brumby is a

diseased, inbred animal not worthy of preservation, they are, in fact, exactly the opposite. Free ranging horses in the wild look after themselves very well. DNA testing of horses from Guy Fawkes, NSW has shown less inbreeding, (less than 5%) than is found in the modern thoroughbred industry. Horses from the Northern Tablelands for example, are mostly Galloways, they have strong bone, sound conformation, their feet are excellent and they are highly intelligent, thinking animals with well developed perception, sight, scent and hearing.

The Heritage Brumby is the descendant of the first horses that came out on the ships from England with the convicts and first settlers; initially only seven horses arrived with the first fleet in 1788. These mares and stallions were sufficiently hardy to survive the voyage and further evolved in the 1800’s by natural selection and survival of the fittest to endure the intense heat as well as the cold and snowy conditions of various parts of this diverse country. The name ‘Brumby’ is generally thought to have originated from an early settler, James Brumby. Horses owned by him were left

to free range and readily adapted to the harsh climate of the Australian bush. As there were vast areas of unfenced land the horses roamed freely and breeding was intermixed; Thoroughbred, Arabian, and working horse breeds, Draft and Clydesdale could be said to shape the bloodlines of the hardy Heritage Brumby. Managing manure to improve horse pastures Horses like to graze. In nature they tend to select grasses, clovers and herbs and then move to new areas. Horses prefer not to graze areas soiled by manure. This self-imposed lax grazing enables them to avoid manure contaminated pasture which minimises their parasite burdens. A grazing horse cannot see what it eats due to a blind spot immediately in front of its head. Pasture selection is based on smell, touch and taste. Smell is the most important and is critical in determining the palatability (acceptance) of pasture. The smell and avoidance of pasture soiled by manure causes "horse-sick" pastures. Horses spend between 16 and 18 hours a day grazing. The exact length of time depends on pasture quantity, quality and the level of supplementary feed. Manure causes "horse-sick" pastures. Manure pattern tends to be influenced by the gender of the horse. Paddocks containing stallions tend to have several large piles of manure. Mares also approach and smell manure, they however manure without turning around and as a consequence manure patches become progressively larger. Geldings appear to be less particular as to where they manure. A mature horse will generate around 7 kg dry-weight/m2 of manure, and the average area covered by a horse's manure heap is about 0.05 m2. Manure, and to a lesser extent urine, affect pasture composition in two ways; by directly increasing growth (transfer of nutrients) and by the rejection of pasture around manure by horses. The pasture around manure therefore grows rapidly due to increased nutrients and a lack of grazing. These areas quickly

Paddocks develop a pattern of tall under-grazed areas (roughs) and short over-grazed areas (lawns). These paddocks are frequently described as "horse- sick". Pasture harrowing, trailing an implement to spread manure evenly across a paddock and to desiccate parasite larvae, should only be done in hot weather after rainfall. Rotational grazing can reduce the rate by which a paddock becomes "horse-sick". Rotational grazing is when grazing is followed by a period of rest. The length of this rest is normally determined by the growth rate of pasture (2 weeks grazing and 6 weeks rest is a good general rule). Pasture management can also include slashing to remove poor quality clumps of pasture, which recover and grow pasture of improved quality that is more palatable to horses.

Diet can play a key role in the quality of life for your horse as it gets to its ‘senior’ years. (quality hay, long-stem chaffs and pasture) including what they would naturally consume, you will be significantly reducing the levels of inflammation. Similarly, it would be the same if we were to support our bodies with nutrient-dense wholefoods instead of processed foods. Although it may be enticing to feed your beloved old friends a warm porridge-like meal, this often does more harm than good. Although we have domesticated horses over time, their digestive system remains in its original format of requiring a high roughage content. For most of the horse’s life, its teeth continuously emerge through the gums to replace what is worn away by chewing. There is approximately 2-3 inches of replacement tooth under the gum-

line. However, when the horse reaches its mid20s, the reserve is often depleted, leaving them at risk of tooth loss. Tooth loss compromises digestion and their chewing ability, this is the only time where dampening their feed may come in handy as well as choosing softer hays and smaller chopped chaff, so they are able eat easily. This in combination with regular dentist checkups should keep your horses happy. Nutritional Supplements Nutritional supplements can play a role in improving health and wellbeing of the horse. As the horse ages their ability to absorb nutrients declines, therefore supplementation with good quality nutrients can be beneficial in maintaining appropriate levels. Continued page 13

Aging is a complex phenomenon which is a natural part of life but chronic disease and illness doesn't always need to be. The average life expectancy of a horse is around 25-30 years although this is far from an indication of their overall health. Like people, horses may or may not develop health conditions as they age, depending on genetics, nutritional status, history and fitness. As horses get older it is common for things to start slowing down and for them to be not as strong as their younger days. Their digestive system may reduce in function and absorption rates can drop which can reduce their immunity. There may be increased breakdown of their joints and muscles, depending on what they have done throughout their life so far. Chronic systemic inflammation is a significant part of aging which is commonly accepted in people but not usually discussed in horses. Chronic low-level inflammation throughout the lifespan can occur from a myriad of environmental, genetic and nutritional causes and can contribute to the onset of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, chronic pain, Cushing's Disease, gastric ulcers and laminitis, just to name a few. So what can we do about it? We can look at the areas which we can change, nutrition being the easiest to manipulate. If we start to look at the horse’s diet and assess what may cause inflammation, this can be anything that is un-natural for a horse to eat; from bi-products/waste-products, to animal products such as whey and fish proteins. Significant reduction of inflammation can also be achieved through feeding the horse a natural diet and increasing the levels of beneficial nutrients and vitamins which are involved in these processes. Exercise is an easy way to improve horse health Â From page 12 Omega 3 fatty acids can play an important role in reducing chronic inflammation. Although the horse's natural diet has a higher omega 6 (pro-inflammatory) to omega 3 ratio, it is important to note that we have domesticated horses to do things they wouldn't otherwise do in the wild, that may increase their levels of stress and therefore inflammation. This is where supplementing with omega 3s may be beneficial in reducing systemic inflammation. What does make a racehorse great? What an incredible athlete. Winx's performance was unbelievable. I have often heard the question in conversations, "What is it that makes her so good?" Put simply, she is a freak! Take this comment in the nicest possible way. What I am saying is that once in a generation, or even a lifetime, more so even once in a millennium, in any field of "competitive" endeavour, an individual emerges from the field who is so far ahead of the pack that they can be labelled as "freaks". (Take Bradman in cricket, Federer in tennis, Shakespeare in literature, Churchill in politics, Einstein in physics, etc, etc, etc). The list goes on and on. Simplistically, speed is dependent on only two parameters, stride length, and stride frequency. Obviously the longer each stride, and the more strides per period, the quicker an individual is going to reach the finish line. There are significant differences between individuals in stride length, so this is very important, Stride frequency is probably more dependent on the tempo or speed of the period of the race. Most individuals are capable of similar maximum stride frequencies, differences occur in the duration individuals can maintain high rates, or the size of their anaerobic reserve. As horses tire, their stride shortens and so they slow, and similarly the frequency reduces and speed is not maintained. Probably the most important contribution to superior individual performance is the so called "heart" or will to win of the individual. The accumulation of waste products in the muscle engine room, high temperatures and low pH, sends signals back to the brain. As they exceed the steady state

The natural instinct for most of us is to reduce effort as a measure of self preservation. Superior athletes either seem to have a higher ability to tolerate these oppressive environments, or are less concerned about their own self preservation, who knows, but they seem to be able to push beyond boundaries we ordinary people can tolerate. This is so called "heart". What is also fundamentally important is the biomechanics or action of the horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stride. Breakdown and injury are probably the major performance limiter in the majority of horses. Tactics in a race play a big part. Simplistically, there are three "sprints" in an event. A burst at the start to get position, often a burst mid race to improve position, and then a sprint to the finish. Winx is phenomenal in that over the period of 30 odd races, all her opposition have been obviously trying to beat her. Every time, she is able to adapt and cope with whatever her opposition have served up, and still race away to win comfortably.

Forget having a code of practice – make Horsemanship mandatory By MEREDITH RANSLEY What an incredible time we have had during our ‘You Can Do It Too!’ Tour, and a very timely one also. While we have been busting a butt to try to change the way people work with and relate to horses, to try to promote the vital need for a dramatic increase in horsemanship skill and the long past due call for people to learn how horses truly think and behave, the NSW Government has been amidst a push to administer an industry code of practice for equine related activities. I have at this stage had only a cursory glance at the proposed code so I will have much more to say on this later and will call on all of you to do the same. However I have been involved with this proposal in one way or another for some years now. While the motives of those involved are certainly commendable, I fear the new code will only give us more rules to follow that will make little or no change to the very real issues that are at hand and these are the mainstream and accepted mistreatment and misunderstanding of horses and the injury and death of far too many of our precious horse lovers. The code deals mainly with beginner riders, but those most affected are ‘experienced’ horse owners/riders. Serious changes do need to be made, hence our two month tour of Queensland, where we provided free help, advice and support to any and all who were interested. But introducing this new code of practice will be like putting seatbelts in cars that have no brakes or steering. They are trying to save lives with more rules when they should be focusing on horsemanship. It worries me a lot and after many years of trying to get this point across and being asked to be involved with formatting this code, I feel like I have been screaming into the wind. And no one is hearing me. Page 26

More rules, more pointless standards, more helmets, more protective gear ... more, more, more is not going to save the lives people are hoping it will. And it is not going to stop an issue that almost no one seems to even care about and that is people causing pain, stress and anxiety in their horses. People are being hurt and killed because of their lack of horsemanship skill and by riding and handling horses in a way that they shouldn’t be. It is way past time to change folks. Horses are not dangerous, unpredictable or life threatening if you know how to properly relate with them and understand their behavior. They are large animals so of course there is always some risk however all risk can be hugely reduced by increasing horsemanship skill. All level of riders are at risk, not just beginners. All levels of riders need to get with it and acknowledge that when it comes to understanding horses truly…..they don’t. It is really, really simple; don’t get on a horse that is not calm…ever. Understand that a safe and true partnership begins on the ground. All riders and horse owners need to stop wasting their

money on gadgets, gear and feed additives and instead, invest their time in developing their partnership with their horse and establishing true

horsemanship. Forget the rules and the gadgets. This code of practice - our code of practice - should be to make horsemanship mandatory.

The mind affects the body - but how much? By TANJA KRAUS I think we are in an era where we are putting a lot more thought and credit to our horse's mental state, and how it affects his body, both in the immediate performance arena, and long-term development. I get to see incredible changes in a horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body, in very short periods of time - sometimes in such a short time (like over a couple of days at a clinic), that you could convince yourself you are imagining it. I've seen horses get fuller in the muscles, shinier, clearer in the eye, I've even seen horses dapple up over a five-day course seems crazy right? Probably not as crazy as we would think. We all know that in humans and other animals alike, that our internal wellness, is certainly reflected on the outside, and we can see a human 'light up' at the sight of someone that they love. It almost seems as though their skin changes in that moment, so I don't think it is too much of a stretch to think that our horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inner wellness (or unwellness) is going to be reflected in his body, and therefore, as horses 'live in the moment' and can go from being anxious to being calm, that their appearance could change quite rapidly as muscles, organs, blood flow, and the meridian system all begin to work the way nature intended. Saddle Clip monitors training via Bluetooth The Equestic SaddleClip, is a relatively new training app on the market that allows all dressage, jumping and eventing riders, professionals or amateurs a simple and uncomplicated check of their training sessions. Simply attach the SaddleClip to the left-hand saddle blade, connect via Bluetooth to the mobile app, select the horse to ride on and off you go. The Equestic SaddleClip records not only the time, gaits and directions during the ride, but also the number of transitions from gait to gait, as well as the clock purity of the gears, the force of the impression and the symmetry within each gait. Testimonial By Dr Ilona D Hudson BVSc, MANZCVS, Grad Dip Animal Chiro, CVA â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have been using the Equestic saddle clip for one month in conjunction with my regular training of both my dressage horses. The horses are competing Prix St George and Advanced. Dressage is a subjective sport and we rely on the comments of judges and coaches as well as our 'feeling' as riders to guide our training. The human brain is not the most accurate tool. Equestic allows me to monitor many different variables and get real numbers to compare training sessions. I am able to set measurable goals and monitor my ability to achieve them. The basic variables measured are time ridden in each gait and each direction as well as the number of transitions between gaits. There is also measurement of time in a straight line to help you balance your workouts. The more advanced variables are the impulsion, rhythm and symmetry. Impulsion is a measure of the ground force over time in each gait. It is something that you are judged on in every dressage test. Equestic allows you to see when your horse or possibly you become tired and lose impulsion. This has helped me to understand how long a training or warm-up session should be before it loses its effectiveness. So if my horse is losing impulsion after 30 minutes then warming up at a competition for 40 minutes means we can't do our best test. Rhythm is a measurement in beats per minute for each gait.

The Equestic SaddleClip records and monitors your training sessions Equestic shows me the rhythm and how consistent my horse is with the rhythm. Consistency of rhythm is very important. If you ever do a freestyle test to music you will need to know these numbers. Symmetry is measured in the trot rhythm, the push off and the landing. The symmetry of the trot rhythm is shown as a time measurement and allows you to see if one diagonal is slightly slower than the other. Again this is visible with the human eye but not if there are very slight discrepancies. Symmetry of push off and landing force is much harder to assess with the human eye and these are measured in G force. While discrepancies may not be visible to the human eye they are important because of the potential to overload a limb and the opportunity to detect problems or changes in a horse early. This means as riders we can get our team of health professionals to assess the horse sooner before real damage occurs. Lastly I love the ability to compare training sessions. I put a couple of notes on each training session so I can look at the patterns and reassess what made one session more successful than another. As a vet and animal biomechanical medicine practitioner I have also started to use the saddle clip on clients' horses to help show them where problems are occurring and how they are improving with treatment and good training programs. In short I'm in love with the

information the Equestic is giving me. It's a very useful tool for assessing my training and keeping me thinking about every single step of every single training session. It won't replace my coach but it

100 Years of the Clydesdale Horse In 2018 the Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society of Australia (CCHS) celebrates its 100th year. Since its inception in 1918 the CCHS has accrued 8720 members, 4400 registered Clydesdale studs and almost 30,000 registered Clydesdales. The organisation aims to uphold the breed features that made them the preferred working horse in the early 1900s whist encouraging their versatility in hand, under saddle and in harness. The gold rush of the 1850s prompted the importation of Clydesdales from Scotland to NSW and Victoria. Crossing these imported horses with mixed breed draught horses soon resulted in Victoria becoming the principle supplier of heavy horses to other parts of Australia. The first official record of Clydesdales in Australia was published in 1904 as the “Draught Horse Stud Book of Victoria” and included Clydesdales, Shires and Suffolk Punches. In 1907 it was renamed as the “Draught Horse Stud Book of Australia”. It wasn’t until 1911 that breed specification became a feature of the Stud Book. Horses that were registered in the Clydesdale Stud Book of Scotland, and those showing two crosses of traceable Clydesdale blood on the sire’s side and one of such crosses on the dam’s side were classified as Clydesdales. A competing book was with more stringent registration regulations was published in NSW in 1917 – “The Australian Clydesdale Stud Book”. The amalgamation of the two books resulted in the formation of the Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society (1918), election of its first president (1921) and the publication of its first stud book (1924). Since the publication of the first stud book in 1924, the largest peak in registered Clydesdale numbers occurred in the late 1920s and early/mid 1930s due to their popularity as the ideal work horse. A sharp decline in numbers in Page 34

the late 1930s was due to World War II and mechanization - the tractor. A resurgence in interest in the breed, a boom in prices and an influx of new breeders increased numbers in the 1970s. Since 2008, numbers have plateaued with approximately only 100 males and 100 females registered annually. Prior to the 1950s, the majority of studs in operation finished breeding as horses became redundant due to mechanisation. The quality of today’s Australian Clydesdale is due to the dedication of the breeders who have managed to maintain the bloodlines. The oldest stud still actively breeding Clydesdales is the “Lavereen” stud, founded by James Martin in 1920 and continued by Graeme and Matt Trewin. More information about the

history of the Clydesdale Stud Book, and the studs that contributed horses to it, is featured in the 2018 Clydesdale Year Book available at and after the Royal Melbourne Show. The importation of Clydesdales has continued to help improve the breed and expand the gene pool. “Flashdale” was a notable Clydesdale Stallion imported in the 1920s. He was awarded Champion Stallion at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1924 and 1926. Clydesdales being shown at the 2018 Royal Melbourne Show have bloodlines that trace back to this stallion. Exhibiting Clydesdale horses is the best way to help preserve the quality of the Clydesdale as a supreme draught breed. The Judge’s report from the 1917 Royal Melbourne Show included the

comment from judge, Edwin Roberts, “The Clydesdale is the only draught horse that should be bred in Australia, because they are useful for any kind of work.” While they are less commonly used for “work” nowadays, this comment highlights their versatility as horses in hand, under saddle and in harness. Increasing popularity exists for sport horses generated from the crossing of a Clydesdale with a lighter breed. Their gentle, trusting temperament makes them a horse the whole family can enjoy. The Far North Coast Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society have again sponsored the Australian Stock Horse Feature ring which has handler, hack and working classes for junior and senior registered Stock Horses. Respected Stock Horse breeder and judge Kellie Handford will be presiding over the Stock Horse ring at the 2018 Show. The popular showjumping program will be run on Saturday with great cash prizes from our generous sponsors for the great selection of events. Trotting displays are again generously sponsored by Garrards Horse and Hound. One lucky driver will go home with a new RIO gig donated by Garrards. To help with new timetables within the Main Arena for all trotting drivers must pre-nominate their entries - contact details for the trotting is on the show website. Sunday there is sporting events to be stewarded by Mullumbimby Pony Club members. Starting at 8am with nominations from 7.30am One off entry fee of $5- for all events with prize money of $10 for 1st and $5 for second with ribbons to 6th placing. All welcome these events are not limited to pony club members.
