The Horse Report
The Way Of The Horse Final - Equitana The Way Of The Horse was initiated in 2005 by EQUITANA Australia, as a way to showcase a kinder and more caring way to start a young horse, so that it becomes a willing and happy riding partner. The trainers chosen for challenge have the same ethos. This years finalists are Bianca Gillanders, Bruce O'Dell and Kane Lamperd. Bianca Gillanders Bianca believes in starting at the beginning when it comes to working with horses. As a clinician and educator she specializes in foundation training, teaching the basics of good horsemanship principles around Australia by her ‘Boot Camp for Broncs’ Horsemanship Clinics. Bianca and her sister Tamara officially established their successful horsemanship education and training centre ‘Tashanor Park’ together in Kyneton, Victoria in 2006 and during the years that followed Bianca particularly focused on working with troubled horses, helping them overcome resistances by re-establishing the basics that had often been missed and improving respect, confidence and trust by connecting with them through feel rather than mechanical force. Bianca’s hope is that she may inspire others
to see that the worst of life’s circumstances do not have to dictate our attitude to life or ability to keep moving forwards and so Bianca’s connection with and love for horses and teaching others continues, as does her own personal horsemanship journey. Bruce O'Dell Bruce O’Dell, a former Professional Saddle Bronc Rider, has started hundreds of horses, and is on a mission to show the public that cowboys have a refined, gentle and educated side, and are not the rough and tumble stereotypes that have garnered a crueller reputation in bygone years. O’Dell competed on the rodeo scene internationally, across USA and Canada, completing his Master Farrier qualification in the process. In his competition career he was accoladed as the highest ever saddle-bronc money earner. He lives on his Maldon property with his wife Jane, a champion Barrel Racer, and after 17 years on the Australian Professional Rodeo circuit, winning all of Australia’s major titles, competing at the infamous Calgary Stampede, has retired from competition, but not completely, with his eye on the TWOTH challenge, he looks forward to sharing his training methods. Website: www.bruceodell.com.au
Kane Lamperd Milawa resident, and the jumping cowboy, Kane Lamperd has been selected as a finalist in the famous The Way of The Horse Challenge (TWOTH), held at EQUITANA Melbourne later this year. This is Lamperd’s first time involvement with TWOTH. He said he was looking forward to being a part of an international exhibition, and showcasing his interpretation of horse training. Lamperd is a renowned trainer, having started his horse journey at a young age. Influenced by famous horseman Tom Roberts, he travelled to the USA at age 16 working across ranches with cattle and horses. On meeting his wife; Bonnie, they made the mutual consensus to focus on one discipline to keep the family together. So with one decision, this cowboy swapped chaps for jodhpurs, Stetsons for helmets, and stock saddles for jumping saddles. Together they now run KBL Sporthorses, a successful breeding, starting, training, and teaching center dedicated to helping riders develop a successful positive partnership with their horses. Working With Children Checks-Do you need one Do you work or volunteer in junior sport? Do you need to get a new Working With Children Check? Every year, more than half a million children across NSW participate in sport with the support of many thousands of dedicated volunteers and paid staff. People who work or volunteer in the sport and recreation sector are being phased into the new Working with Children Check (WWCC) system in NSW from April 2015. To help this sector prepare for the phase in process, the Office of the Children’s Guardian is running a series of information sessions across regional New South Wales. Local sports organisations and clubs, paid workers, volunteers and self-employed people involved in junior sport and recreation activities are encouraged to attend the free WWCC information sessions. The training will cover: • The WWCC application and verification process • Who needs and who does NOT need a new WWCC (including parent volunteers)
• Individual, employer and club administration responsibilities • How to help keep kids safer in sport and recreation environments. “A new Working With Children Check has started in NSW and employers, including sports clubs and associations, volunteers and employees need to understand what they have to do to comply with the legislation,” said NSW Children's Guardian Ms Kerryn Boland. “This is a great opportunity to find out what is required for the sports sector you are involved with. “It’s also an opportunity to have your questions answered by representatives of our Child Safe Organisations team.” Information and resources including a sports specific brochure have been developed and are available at the website of the Office of the Children’s Guardian on the link below. Covering your mare - Live cover or AI There are two general ways to "cover" or breed the mare Live cover: the mare is brought to the stallion's residence and is covered "live" in the breeding shed. She may also be turned out in a pasture with the stallion for several days to breed naturally ('pasture bred'). The former situation is often preferred, as it provides a more controlled environment, allowing the breeder to ensure that the mare was covered, and places the handlers in a position to remove the horses from one another should one attempt to kick or bite the other. Artificial Insemination (AI): the mare is inseminated by a veterinarian or an equine reproduction manager, using either fresh, cooled or frozen semen. After the mare is bred or artificially inseminated, she is checked using ultrasound 14–16 days later to see if she “took”, and is pregnant. A second check is usually performed at 28 days. If the mare is not pregnant, she may be bred again during her next cycle. It is considered safe to breed a mare to a stallion of much larger size. Because of the mare’s type of placenta and its attachment and blood supply, the foal will be limited in its growth within the uterus to the size of the mare's uterus, but will grow to its genetic potential after it is born. Live cover When breeding live cover, the mare is usually boarded at the stud. She may be "teased" several times with a stallion that will not breed to her, usually with the stallion being
Kristen Bates-Taunton Ph: 07 5525 2337 Mob: 0417 425 881 tremaynestud@gmail.com
presented to the mare over a barrier. Her reaction to the teaser, whether hostile or passive, is noted. A mare that is in heat will generally tolerate a teaser (although this is not always the case), and may present herself to him, holding her tail to the side. A veterinarian may also determine if the mare is ready to be bred, by ultrasound or palpating daily to determine if ovulation has occurred. Live cover can also be done in liberty on a paddock or on pasture, although due to safety and efficacy concerns, it is not common at professional breeding farms. When it has been determined that the mare is ready, both the mare and intended stud will be cleaned. The mare will then be presented to the stallion, usually with one handler controlling the mare and one or more handlers in charge of the stallion. Multiple handlers are preferred, as the mare and stallion can be easily separated should there be any trouble.
Artificial insemination Artificial insemination (AI) has several advantages over live cover, The mare and stallion never have to come in contact with each other, which reduces accidents or injury, reduces the chance of spreading sexually transmitted diseases and elimates travel and travel costs. It also opens up the world to international breeding, as semen may be shipped across continents, allows mares or stallions with health issues, to continue to breed, and allows more mares to be bred from one stallion, as the ejaculate may be split between mares. Frozen semen may be stored and used to breed mares even after the stallion is dead, allowing his lines to continue. However, the semen of some stallions does not freeze well and some breed registries may not permit the registration of foals resulting from the use of frozen semen after the stallion's death. A stallion is trained to mount a dummy mare, although a live mare may be used, and he is most commonly collected using an artificial vagina (AV) which is heated to simulate the vagina of the mare. The AV has a filter and collection area at one end to capture the semen, which can then be processed in a lab. The semen may be chilled or frozen and shipped to the mare owner or used to breed mares "on-farm". When the mare is in heat, the person inseminating introduces the semen directly into her uterus using a syringe and pipette.

what everyone else reportedly is doing As stated above, the first 1 – 4 hours after delivery determine the fate of the foal. The gold standard is that the foal should stand and suck within the first hour. If this happens, it is almost a certainty that no problem will occur. Those that are weak and lethargic, take forever to get to their feet, and fail to find the teat and drink are odds on to develop issues. Most such foals have had some problem either in the womb during gestation, or during the birthing process. There are endless possible conditions but prematurity, placentitis in the mare, infections in utero, excessive length of gestation, placental separation, and asphyxia, or loss of oxygen, during delivery, are all possible scenarios. The outcome is what we refer to generally, is a “dummy” foal. Invariably, there is something wrong with the foal and this interrupts the natural way of development. Obviously the foal that is seriously affected is easy to pick, and owners anticipate that a problem will occur. The more subtle cases, where the foal progresses, seemingly satisfactorily, albeit slowly, are the ones that commonly develop what is known as “Joint Ill”. These foals progress seemingly satisfactorily, until somewhere between usually one and six weeks, become suddenly lame in one or more legs. This onset of
Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse
The first few days of a foal’s life are sometimes fraught with hazard, and are critical to the future well being of the horse. In fact, to be more specific, the first few HOURS after delivery are where it all happens. It is common knowledge that the foal needs to get a good dose of colostrum, and it is also common practice top apply some form of disinfectant to the navel stump of the torn placenta to avoid “Navel Ill” and “Joint Ill”. Navel Ill implies an abscess that forms at the stump, and Joint Ill refers to a devastating, crippling, and often life threatening infection that develops in one or more joints in the first few weeks of life. Both of these husbandry practices are certainly valid, and very useful, but compliance does not guarantee that the problems mentioned will not develop. Many foals that receive no colostrums, and do not have attention to their navel, do not ever have a problem, and on the contrary, many that owners go
lameness is a critical emergency and urgent, prompt, aggressive treatment is essential if there is to be any hope of salvaging the horse. My rule of thumb is that ANY foal that becomes lame in the first few weeks has joint ill until proven otherwise. In the womb, the foal receives its nutrients and protection via the mars blood system circulating through the foal by way of the placenta and cord. At birth, the cord is broken, and the foal suddenly has to rely on its own resources to survive. In effect, the foal is born without any natural immunity, and it will take several weeks for its immune system to develop and become active. While this is happening, the foal has no antibodies or resistance to infection. Nature’s way is for the mare’s first milk, “colostrum”, to be very rich and chock a block full of antibodies. These are proteins developed in the mare that are concentrated in the milk, and if passed across to the foal, will provide the recipient with a “passive” immunity that will give protection. These antibodies last about 12 weeks before they are degraded, and this timing coincides with the foals own immune system kicking into gear. Proteins are very large molecules or structures that normally when eaten, are broken down into components amino acids by the digestive system to be absorbed and utilised by the body. Nature has provided a “Golden Window” of opportunity for the foal to be able to absorb these very large protein molecules by leaving the mucosal cells in the intestine “wide open” for the first few hours of life so that antibodies can be absorbed. The stimulus for these open cells to close is the suck reflex of the foal. Once the foal has sucked strongly, signals go to the intestine for these cells to close. The problem with the cells being open for antibody absorption, is that other large size structures can also cross the intestinal barrier and enter the foals system. Unfortunately, gram negative bacteria, which are very common in the environment, will take advantage of this opportunity and enter the blood stream. These are deadly to the horse and cause most of the serious foal diseases. continued page 11
The Horse Report
Getting immediate treatment In the case of joint ill, the bacteria circulate around the body and filter out in the very vascular and active growth plates of the joints. They establish themselves, multiply, and result in a fully blown infection. This is why it is normally a few weeks before symptoms appear, as the incubation, or establishment phase, takes time. Rest assured, the actual infection almost always occurred in those first few hours when the opportunity presented for the bacteria. In the “normal” foal that sucks quickly, the intestinal cells close before the bacteria have been ingested and been able to cross, and those foals that get a good dose of natural colostrums, have an instant supply of strong antibodies to eradicate any bacteria that do cross. Those foals that take forever to suck, allowing large doses of bacteria to cross, and then receive a dose of artificial colostrums on day 2 or 3, have already had the bacteria colonise in the growth plates and it is often too late. So, what to do when your foal suddenly becomes lame? Panic! This is an emergency and requires immediate treatment. The foal is acutely lame, one or more joints are suddenly very swollen, hot, and inflamed, the foal has a fever, and is dull and depressed. Very high doses of an appropriate antibiotic are essential. The drug must be one capable of penetrating into the growth plates and
joint fluid of the horse. Obviously anti inflammatory drugs to minimise the over reaction of the foal’s body, and to help keep the animal comfortable, are also used. What has now become a very valuable addition to our treatment of these cases is called “Regional Perfusion” of the affected joint. With this, a tourniquet is applied above the joint, and a large dose of antibiotic is injected into a vein below the tourniquet. The tourniquet is left on for 20 – 30 minutes. During this time, an extremely high concentration of antibiotic perfuses into the infected area, ensuring adequate contact with the bacteria, and in most cases, “sterilising” the joint. This treatment has made a remarkable difference to success rates. The other major phase of treatment involves surgical debridement or scraping of the joint, lavaging and flushing the toxic elements out of the joint, and establishing drainage in some cases. Early aggressive treatment can result in a good outcome, but the longer the infection is allowed to establish and progress, the worse the damage and the almost certainty of a crippling arthritis occur. By far the best results can be expected if the owner and veterinarian recognise the potential for a foal possibly developing the problem due to the circumstances surrounding those critical first few hours of life.

Raising money for Cancer research The 5th annual "Crackin' Cancer" (120 km) Horse Trail Ride is to be held from Sunday 19th to Saturday 25nd October The ride will be starting from Three Waters "High Country" Holidays situated at the base of Bullock Mountain, Glen Innes and covering the magnificent variety of surrounding country side over four days of riding. The aim of this unique horse trail ride is to raise money to aid research into cracking the codes of the different and insidious diseases known as cancer. This ride is supported by the Cancer Council of NSW and is run annually. Thanks to the support of local lanowners the ride runs through seven different properties that surround the base camp of Three Waters "High Country" Holidays. Trail Leader Steve Langley, an accredited and volunteer trail leader with Trail Riding Australia Inc. has 36 years' experience in horse trekking through this country. Three Waters High Country holidays and "Horsetel" is used as a base camp. From there the ride leaves each day on a 25 to 30 km ride. Every day will see the riders going into a different area of the magnificent surrounding country side, traversing, creeks, and rivers, forest, bush and historic old mine areas. This is the country of the wild and rugged
New England Ranges, country that few people would ever see other than the landowners and stockmen. The guests are to arrive at Three Waters Sunday 19th October, set up camp and learn about the planned ride, and meet the people concerned at a sausage sizzle dinner that night. This meal is provided by the man who our respect and thanks must go to; he is the man most responsible for putting this ride for charity together, Mr. Marshall Fittler, chief coordinator and fund raiser for the Cancer
Council of NSW. Mr. Fittler works tirelessly to make the horse trail rides a success and was the prime instigator in starting this ride and many fund raising events over the years. He is a consistent volunteer worker fundraising in many areas of NSW for the Cancer Council. Graham Gleeson a long serving member and former chairman of ATHRA (Australian Trail Horse riding Association) is appointed as Chief Steward and will be in charge of the Trail Marshalls who ensure that all gates are opened and closed as found and that no stock on the route is disturbance . Wednesday 22nd will be a rest day and a horse handling clinic conducted by Mark Langley a professional horse breaker and trainer with wide recognition for his clinics on horsemanship, breaking in, and the handling of problem horses has been planned for your enjoyment His horse handling clinic will be followed that evening by a dinner dance and entertainment in the "Gunyah". You can swim in deep sections of the creek where there are jetties with ladders, supervised horse trail rides (1 to 4 hours), fossick for Sapphires, fish and bushwalk in an extremely healthy climate of low humidity and dry heat. If you are caravanning, in camper trailers or tenting, there are powered and unpowered sites or your can have the comfort of an en-suite cabin each equipped with gas BBQ’s.

The Horse Report The treatment that can turn a problem horse into a good horse, and a good horse into a Champion!
Getting the most from our horses By Tanja Kraus A lot of us are drawn to horsemanship training for a specific reason. Often we are up against a problem with our horse that we just can't seem to fix, and so we start looking outside of our 'normal' training methods. I know thats how I came to study horsemanship - a big black ott thoroughbred that I was having trouble competing in dressage. Because we arrive at horsemanship to 'fix' a problem, we can forget that it is a training method - not just a problem solver. No matter who we follow, or which horsemanship program we choose, we generally categorise the training we do into 2 groups ground work and ridden work. However on closer inspection, we find that there are 4 main categories within any horsemanship training - online ground - liberty ground and ridden, - freestyle riding - collected or engaged riding. When we look at horsemanship as a training program, we also need to understand that there is a reason that we have those 4 categories, and to effectively train our horses, we need to train across all 4. Let me try to explain. When I had issues with my boy, I wanted to focus on keeping him calm and confident - which came through the ground skills. photo by Lu Townsend photography And then I wanted to focus on my engaged or collected riding, because thats what I needed for the dressage arena. I didn't to very much (if any) liberty work, or freestyle riding - so there were 'bits' missing. When I look at my own horses now, my most balanced horse (mentally and physically) is cooper, and whilst I could say that he is that way because he is the one I have spent the most time with, which is true, it is also because I regularly train across all 4 categories. My other horses are strong across perhaps 2 or 3 categories, and as a result are a lot less consistent and reliable. So if you want to get a little more out of your horse and his training have a look at your training program and see if there are 'bits missing' and you will see a great result when you begin to even it out.

Don’t rush the Face-Up Mark Langley www.EquineAbility.com.au
Over the years, and especially in the last 10 years where I have focussed training horses as a full time profession, I have changed the way I have approached certain areas of my horsemanship and in some areas, gone away from what people had taught me. I guess this is the area that every horse person can say that in the long run, we end up learning more from our horses than anywhere else. There was something that always seemed so important in horsemanship not so long ago – getting a horse to face up. Whether handling a foal or a horse that you were starting or trying to connect with, the face-up was always the first aim. I now realise that the face-up, even though it is still useful, is not necessarily the best way to start your relationship with a horse. Whether we are connected to our horse with a rope or at liberty, horses will over time, softly and calmly, come around and face us. There is no need to push them (or pull them) thinking that the face-up is the key to respect or understanding. A horse can have all their attention on you in a calm and soft way and you can be standing behind them and they will look around at you calmly. To me this is great – if a horse trusts you when you are standing right behind it; if it can look at you calmly without moving, you know that it can start to trust us. Whether I am using a rope or my body language, my emphasis is not on the position of a horse’s body, more so the position of its mind. So all I ever want to do is to draw my horse’s attention to me and reward it with space or a release of contact. If you watch horses in the paddock following each other around, they follow each other or go in directions by just looking and following their focus. Generally they are very soft and bendy from their nose to their shoulders. It is only when a horse is nervous or slightly over alert that their head lifts up and their body stiffens and they look as if they lead through their shoulders more. What I have increasingly seen is an emphasis on the face-up as opposed to how and why their horse faced up. If you are using body language, your horse should face-up in a calm and inquisitive fashion and if you are using a lead rope, your horse should look through the lead rope and then face-up. If you rush the face-up you may only be contributing to your horse stiffening to pressure and not softening. This contribution will have to be undone in later education. I have worked with many horses which although are alert on a lead, tend to stiffen and shift their body to face up when I ask for softness, roundness and focus. This has always been what they have been taught. I used to teach a horse to face-up and then to flex. I now know that this is back to front. If you are standing beside a horse and it looks at you calmly, it has to flex. So, why not teach a horse how to flex through the pressure you have applied on a rope. Then, flexing becomes focus. Once this is achieved, facing you will be easy but done in very natural and softer fashion. Whereas, if you pull your horse’s face and it shifts its body to face you stiffly, you have just taught your horse to stiffen to pressure and not even focus through a rope. Disengaging the hindquarter seems to be a common way of gaining the face-up. Yes it is a quick way to get your horses body facing you but it is not the best way.

The Horse Report
The best of the best in the North West at Cloncurry Some of the best horses and riders in the country travelled from far and wide for four days of Aussie horse-sport competition at the 2014 Ernest Henry Mining Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft, which was held from Thursday 10 - Sunday 13 July 2014 at the new venue, the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre. Record nominations were received for the 2014 event, which is a true testament to the iconic event. Some competitors travelled from as far as Modella in Victoria to contest for $60,000 in prizes and prize money. The winner of the prestigious Ernest Henry Mining Stockman’s Challenge was Jon Templeton, from Kingaroy, riding ‘Pure Blonde’, owned by David Bell from South Australia. In second place was Luke Bennett riding ‘This Barbies Smart’, followed by Scott Schoo’s ‘TR Quickstep’. This highly contested event, of which there were a record 84 competitors, included a first round and a final round, with a Dry Work Phase and Cattle Work Phase in each round. Jon Templeton continued to dominate the weekend by winning the Imparja Television Open Challenge on ‘Marnie’s Ace’, and placing second on ‘Urrala Aussie’. Jon went on to win the QLD Country Life Novice Draft on ‘Doc’s Lethal Destiny’ and placed in the Curley Cattle Transport Maiden and Jim Telford Memorial Open Draft (sponsored by the Leichhardt Hotel). A new event to the program, the AJ McDonald Memorial Limited Rookie Challenge, was won by Jordyn Bentley rid-
ing ‘Chemmy Hawk’, the Acton Super Beef Juvenile Challenge was won by Jontti Arnold, the TopX Junior Challenge was won by Ryan Wallen, and the 4LM Radio Mini Challenge, was won by Madison Simms. President of the Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft James Coates said the 2014 Ernest Henry Mining Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge was a fantastic weekend. “We were thrilled with the success of the 2014 event,” he said. “We were lucky enough to draw some of the best riders in the country, the atmosphere was electric and the weather was near perfect.” “In addition to the main Challenge events, the weekend included a Gala Dinner on the Friday night, trade stalls and plenty of campdrafting action,” he said. “We were thrilled with the new facility and although there is still work to be done, the positive feedback we received was phenomenal.” “This event would not be possible without the support of volunteers, committee members and passionate people from our community. I would like to thank the valued sponsors and cattle donors, who without them, the event would not happen,” he said. This year, the 2014 Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft was held at the new location of the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre with new arenas, camping facilities and cattle yards. “The new two-arena facility allowed for record nominations and the introduction of a junior and mini challenge for the kids – a first for the event. We’re looking forward to hosting more campdrafting events here in the future.”

There was also a large division of junior riders (all girls) and we hope that from a young age we can help them understand the importance of being aware of this disease that affects so many women. Dressage is often a very serious sport, so to see every rider with a splash of pink or more somewhere was fantastic. Breast Cancer will touch so may of our lives, family and friends and as dressage being mainly dominated by women; we thought this event is a perfect way to raise awareness and a fun way to raise money for such a worthy cause. This years event has been improved with some changes in the show jumping classes and also the addition of Official dressage classes. We are running an online auction on the clubs Facebook page with bidding wars happening within the first 24 hours of it opening. Items are being added daily with bidding ending on Monday 6th October at 8pm. All proceeds are donated the Breast Cancer Foundation, the event is run with almost no expenses so every dollars goes straight to the Foundation. Show jumping will start at 9am both days and the dressage will start around 8.30-9.00am both days as well. The local Dragon Boat Club, Mt Warning Dragons Abreast are a team of all Breast Cancer survivors who will run the canteen over both days for breakfast and lunch. The food these ladies produce has a very high reputation, so if your around come and sample the gourmet style food on offer while supporting a great cause. Miniature Horses Miniature horses make the perfect companion or serious competition horse for the young or the young at heart. Due to their size they are suitable for all ages and abilities. With a natural intelligence and athletic ability the Miniature Horse competes in conformation classes, jumping classes, trail classes and in harness driving classes. The Miniature Horse really is the Horse for Everyone. There are shows all over Australia and the world for Miniature Horses, with their popularity growing on a daily basis. The IMHR holds a 5 day National Show in Tamworth each year attracting over 500 exhibits from Australia and New Zealand plus State and Feature Shows. Most Agricultural Shows and also Royal Shows hold classes for Miniature Horses. Where Did They Come From ? In the 17th century, miniature horses were bred as pets for Europe's Habsburg nobility. Records from the court of the French King Louis XIV, circa 1650, note the presence of tiny horses among the exotic creatures in the king's zoo. Paintings and articles featured the miniature horse by 1765. In England, Lady Estella Hope and her sisters carried on a breeding program from original English lines into the mid-nineteen hundreds. However, not all early miniatures were pampered pets of kings and queens. Some were used to work in the English Midlands, Wales and Northern European coal mines as pit ponies. In the United States, the miniature
Page 28
horse breed was refined during the 20th century. Miniature horses in the USA added additional lines from sources that included the Hackney Pony and the Pony of the Americas. The Falabella miniature horse was originally developed in Argentina in 1868 by Patrick Newell. When Newell died, the herd and breeding methods were passed to Newell's son-in-law, Juan Falabella. Juan added additional bloodlines including the Welsh Pony, Shetland pony, and small Thoroughbreds. With considerable inbreeding he was able to gain consistently small size within the herd. Modern Miniature Horses show more refinement and a type closer to that of a full sized horse. Without a size reference it can be difficult to tell the difference between a Miniature Horse and a full sized horse in a photograph. Modern influences include the American Shetland, Arabian Riding Ponies and other more refined types. Height Divisions Our horses compete based on their height. Miniature Horse is for those horses that will mature under 34.5”, Small Horse is for those horses that will mature under 38.5” and Little Horse is for those maturing up to 10.2hh. Showing Your Miniature Horse Showing their true versatility and athleticism, Miniature Horses compete in halter classes that are judged as per full sized horse conformation classes, jumping classes – like Six Bar, Fault & Out and Show Jumper plus Trail
classes similar to the Quarter Horse. Harness classes showcase the Miniature Horse in another popular area – driving ! Miniature horses make fantastic driving horses. We also hold classes for our Youth exhibitors under 18 years as at entry closing date. They are judged on their showmanship skills (how they handle the horse), hunter skills (jumping class) trail skills (obstacles similar to quarter horse events) and long reining. How Are They Different to Miniature Ponies ? Miniature Ponies are traditionally heavier in type with thicker bone and deeper girth. Ponies are smaller versions of English Shetlands and other stockier type ponies. Miniatures on display at Gladstone Extravaganza The National Miniature Register Inc. (NMR) is proud to represent Gladstone's 1st ever Miniature Horse Show to be held over 2 days on the 1st and 2nd November, 2014. The Gladstone Miniature Horse & Pony Extravaganza program consists of a variety of events from Miniature Ponies to Little Horses in Halter, Harness, Novelty, Performance, Costume, Versatility and Youth classes. The Extravaganza will commence on Saturday 1st November at 12.30pm allowing competitors time to arrive and get settled before the Halter classes begin. Each group division will have a Champion and Reserve Champion. The winners will receive a sash and trophy sponsored by Raine and Horne Gladstone. There will be a Supreme Champion Award for each group sponsored by Hutchinson Builders Rockhampton comprising of a garland and trophy. The Grand Champion Horse of the Show will be sponsored by Neilan Quarter Horse & Miniature Stud and will receive a Grand Champion Sash and Rosette, Trophy and $100 cash prize. Harness classes will have the chance to compete for Champion and Reserve Champion and will commence after the judging of Grand Champion Horse of the Show to be followed by the Youth and Adult Costume Class. This will conclude Saturday's events. Sunday, 2nd November will commence at 8am with Youth Performance then open Performance classes. A very diverse program comprising of Lungeline, Trial, Hunter,
Showjumping, 6 Bar and Fault and Out - a great spectacle to observe. An additional inclusion into the program is a 'Versatility' event which is an accumulation of points over the 2 days. The highest point scorer in each division will be awarded a Champion Sash and trophy for their efforts. Champion and Reserve Champion sashes and trophies will be awarded to all group Performance Horse winners, very generously sponsored by Hutchinson Builders Rockhampton. The Gladstone Miniature Horse & Pony Extravaganza will be held at the Gladstone Showgrounds. There are covered stables modified for miniatures (our sincere thanks and gratitude to the Gladstone Show Society for catering to our requirements) and ample camping at a minimal cost. The arena is fully enclosed to contain any would-be runaways. There will be catering available on both days and the showgrounds are within walking distance to the Gladstone's main street if necessary. This broad range of classes will showcase the versatility of these intelligent, kind natured miniature equines. Not only do they provide enormous pleasure to the youth but to the elderly also that are often seen competing in the ring. This show will be a wonderful opportunity for the general public to see the miniature horses in action. Everyone is welcome and public entry is only a gold coin donation. We have made the program extensive to attract competitors who are strong in a variety of fields to attend. Support for this show
would ensure an extensive program again in the future. We would like to show our sincere appreciation to our sponsors: Hutchinson Builders, Monark Park, Raine and Horne Gladstone, The Feed Barn, Top Produce and CRT Calliope. Without this wonderful support our show would not be as successful as anticipated. The Miniature horse is such an intelligent breed to educate. As they generally are not ridden, the horse therefore has to learn to respond directly to vocal or intricate hand commands. Their ability to master trial events on the ground is as remarkable as seeing these small horse clear jumps well over the height of their heads. This is an event not to be missed. The Gladstone Miniature Horse & Pony Extravaganza offers this and much more. This show will be a pre-nominated event as there is be NO entries accepted on the day. Entry fees have been reduced to enable all competitors to enter. To nominate, please go to the NMR website and download the program. The 40th Anniversary Dalby Stock Horse Sale The annual Dalby Stock Horse Sale is celebrating its 40th Anniversary on the weekend of the 5th -7th of December. Entries have now closed for a catalogue of 280 horses compared to 185 last year. The Incentive Drafts and Open Draft will take place on Friday 5th December. A working parade of all horses will take place on Saturday 6th December and the sale will commence at 7am on Sunday 7th December. Better Rewards for Buyers The Incentive Draft competitions have been extended to give past buyers more opportunity to win good prize money. This should give current buyers more confidence to bid on potential Campdraft horses. Graduates of the sale for the past 3 years are now eligible to compete twice instead of just the once. This should attract more numbers and competition. The popular Donrica Stud “Highest scoring gelding, ridden by the owner” continues with $10,000 in the prize pool. 40th Anniversary Celebration The Darling Downs Branch of the ASHS have arranged for “Drinks on the Deck” at the showground pavilion for all ASHS members on Saturday 6th December from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. The pavilion will also
house a display of Dalby Stock Horse Sale memorabilia and a display of rural and equine art. Later in the evening, in the covered arena, a tribute to the Australia Stock Horse will be performed by Rooftop Express. The Grove Bar & Grill will be open for the best Shorthorn steaks during the evening. A live band will then complete the entertainment for the remainder of the night.

Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist In 2011/12 products containing curcuma longa ranked number three in the herbal supplement industry in 2013/14 has seen the sales increase by 26% and now it is rated number one in the natural channels of the health industry. This is due to more substantial studies being published taking products containing turmeric/curcumin to great heights. The science behind curcumin and it’s very powerful actives has continued supporting the already growing evidence that this plant can assist with cardio vascular, brain and muscle and joint health. There are references dating back 4000 years of use of curcuma longa, so historically it has been used to treat an manage a number of conditions very successfully. However the use of the culinary version of turmeric has a limited benefit, even at very high doses. It is very important to appreciate that successful use of Turmeric can only be achieved by using a high quality, high ratio extract, and there is growing evidence to suggest that other actives are required to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin as it is generally not well absorbed. In saying this I am sure you have heard many people say that they have used fresh turmeric root and turmeric powder, but it is amazing how the placebo effect can cloud people’s judgements. There is no doubt they may have a small degree of benefit, but not one that is obvious. There are many studies on curcuma longa, but the majority of these are based on the high ratio extract generally 95:1 as being the most successful. Curcuma longa is a low-growing perenial in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and is native to Southeastern Asia. Curcumin is the most active chemical in turmeric, but there almost 100 chemicals, including vitamins in the Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical breakdown of Turmeric, some of these include bisdemethoxy, curcumin, and demethoxy curcumin. Herbs and plants have very complex phytochemical and ethnobotanicla Page 32
breakdowns, all of which are unique to each species and all of which contribute to its benefits. EquiGesic™ is a premium extract of curcumin from Curcuma longa (Turmeric) featuring fast-acting Turmeric600 to effectively assist in the relief of symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. With some high quality curcumin products there can be a superior clinical efficacy this is due to a unique extraction process, which ensures a high yield of pure curcumin. The active principle is then blended to significantly improve bioavailability, increasing absorption and ensuring a rapid onset of action. Bioequivalent doses delivering a level of curcumin that not only will be absorbed but also high enough to achieve a positive outcome is essential. Indications/claims There are a number of conditions that will benefit from the use of curcuma Longa these are, temporary relief of arthritic pain and the pain of osteoarthritis. Relief of muscular aches and pains, there may be a reduction in joint inflammation and joint stiffness or swelling. Pain relief can be quite fast acting with some formulas available. Bioavailable Curcumin: The Key to Turmeric’s Anti-inflammatory Action It has been suggested that dietary Curcuma longa (Turmeric) would be an effective treatment agent in inflammatory degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis. However the curcumin content of turmeric powder can be quite low (~ 4%), and these levels are insufficient to achieve a significant therapeutic effect. To achieve this effect an equivalent dose of 1200mg of pure curcumin is required, making it is necessary to concentrate this active constituent, antioxidants and amino acids may support the absorption. A high level of curcuminoids such as 95% will increase the benefits and results. Turmeric Chemistry Turmeric contains protein (6.3%), lipids (5.1%), minerals (3.5%), carbohydrates (4%) and water (13.1%). In addition, it contains vitamins, minerals and trace elements such as carotenes, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, ascorbic acid, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and selenium in various concentrations. The major active constituents (3-5%) are the curcuminoids, which are respon-
Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) root and powder
sible for the yellow pigmentation as well as the majority of the biological activity. Curcuminoids have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-allergic, anti-spasmodic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-tumoral effects. The main curcuminoids are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin (DMC) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC). Minor curcuminoids are 5'methoxycurcumin, dihydrocurcumin and the acidic arabinogalactans ukonanes A-D. Clinical Trials The anti-arthritis activity of curcumin has been established with a double-blind cross over trial performed on 18 patients suffering from diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis. They showed significant improvement of symptoms (duration of morning stiffness, walking time and joint swelling) after administration of curcumin. Curcumin was given at a dose of 1200mg/day for five to six weeks. Significant improvement was observed in all patients. [11] A study in 182 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and joint swelling showed a significant inter-group difference at the end of the 16 weeks of therapy. Participants in the trial were receiving 1200mg of curcumin daily.[12] In another trial it was demonstrated that Curcumin had an anti-inflammatory effect and assisted in the reduction of stiff-
ness and joint swelling. [13] In a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind trial in 45 patients with postoperative inflammation, the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin were evaluated. Curcumin was found to be more effective than phenylbutazone in reducing tenderness and pain at operative site. [14] A review of five human trials published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2003, showed that in doses of 1125 – 2500mg, curcumin was safe and displayed evidence of anti-inflammatory activity. [1] Mechanism of action Curcumin acts upon pro-inflammatory mediators, it inhibits PGE2 (interleukin IL-1, ) widely implicated in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. Curcumin is able to prevent the inflammatory process and to preserve cartilage from the action of IL-1 activated chondrocytes. Cytokine activated chondrocytes produce large amounts of nitric oxide [NO] that play a role in IL1 induced suppression of glycosaminoglycan and collagen synthesis. [15] Inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 offers a valuable approach to the management of cartilage injury by reducing expression of genes involved in cartilage matrix degradation. The beneficial effects of Tumeric MECHANISM OF ACTION Curcumin interferes with inflammatory pathways by blocking the transcription factor NF kb. The numbers 1, 2, and 3 represent the pathways that are described to be affected by curcumin. NF kb: Nuclear transcription factor required for transcription of genes involved in the inflammatory responses; IB: Cytosolic inhibitor of NF kb; NIK: NF kb Binducing kinase; IKK: I kb kinases. Curcumin inhibits arachidonic acid metabolism by inhibiting incorporation of arachidonic acid into platelet phospholipids and by inhibiting the deacylation of phospholipids.[3] [7] Curcumin and its analogues inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) by inhibiting COX-2 mRNA and protein expression. [17] Down regulation of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthetase happens through suppression of NF?B activation (see figure 2). Curcumin inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine production (TNF-?, IL-1? and IL- 8) [18] [19] Curcumin taken orally decreases the levels of inflammatory glycoprotein. [20] Curcumin releases endogenous corticosteroids, which may help indirectly by stabilizing the lysosomal membrane. [21] Curcumin inhibits pro-inflammatory leukotriene synthesis via inhibition of LOX Enzyme. [22] Curcumin is a potent scavenger of superoxide and inhibits lipid peroxidation. [23] [24] Curcumin reduces neutrophil infiltration in inflammatory conditions by stabilizing lysosomal enzymes membrane and lowering the release of lysosomal enzymes and eicosanoids from the neutrophils. [25] SAFETY Efficacy and safety of Curcuma domestica extracts compared with ibuprofen in patients with knee osteoarthritis: a multicenter study. Kuptniratsaikul V1, Dajpratham P1, Taechaarpornkul W2, Buntragulpoontawee M3, Lukkanapichonchut P4, Chootip C5, Saengsuwan J6, Tantayakom K7, Laongpech S8. Author information Abstract OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of Curcuma domestica extracts in pain reduction and functional improvement. METHODS: 367 primary knee osteoarthritis patients with a pain score of 5 or higher were randomized to
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), can be a beneficial anti-inflammatory receive ibuprofen 1,200 mg/day or C. domestica extracts 1,500 mg/day for 4 weeks. The main outcomes were Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) total, WOMAC pain, WOMAC stiffness, and WOMAC function scores. Adverse events (AEs) were also recorded. RESULTS: 185 and 182 patients were randomly assigned into C. domestica extracts and ibuprofen groups, respectively. The baseline characteristics were no different between groups. The mean of all WOMAC scores at weeks 0, 2, and 4 showed significant improvement when compared with the baseline in both groups. After using the noninferiority test, the mean difference (95% confidence interval) of WOMAC total, WOMAC pain, and WOMAC function scores at week 4 adjusted by values at week 0 of C. domestica extracts were noninferior to those for the ibuprofen group (P=0.010, P=0.018, and P=0.010, respectively), except for the WOMAC stiffness subscale, which showed a trend toward significance (P=0.060). The number of patients who developed AEs was no different between groups. However, the number of events of abdominal pain/discomfort was significantly higher in the ibuprofen group than that in the C. domestica extracts group (P=0.046). Most subjects (96%-97%) were satisfied with the treatment, and two-thirds rated themselves as improved in a global assessment. CONCLUSION: C. domestica extracts are as effective as ibuprofen for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The side effect profile was similar but with fewer gastrointestinal AE reports in the C. domestica extracts group.
OSTEOARTHRITISEXTREMELY COMMON IN HORSES Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric (Curcuma longa), has a wide range of beneficial effects including anti-inflammation and analgesia. However, poor bioavailability of curcumin hinders its clinical application. To overcome this limitation, modifying the structure of curcumin and synthesizing new derivatives has achieved favourable pharmacokinetic profiles. The management of osteoarthritis represents a real challenge. This complex and multi-factorial disease evolves over decades and requires not only the alleviation of symptoms, i.e. pain and joint function
but also the preservation of articular structure without side effects. Nutraceuticals are good candidates for the management of OA due to their safety profile and potential efficacy. However, they have not been a part of the treatment guidelines and published recommendations until recently. Curcumin is the yellow pigment isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, commonly known as turmeric. Curcumin is a highly pleiotropic molecule (multi functional) with an excellent safety profile. Strong molecular evidence has been published for its potency to target multiple inflammatory diseases. However, naturally occurring curcumin cannot achieve its optimum therapeutic outcomes due to its low solubility and poor bioavailability, so when choosing a product make sure you know everything there is to know about it. Products such as Equigesic which contains a very unique 95:1 extract and supporting nutrients including Piper Nigrum (black pepper fruit) 10% pirperine HPLC 20:1 ratio to enhance bioavailability are an ideal choice. For further information on the uses and benefits of curcuma longa please contact me antoinette@hiform.com.au or phone 03 97756422

In reflection of the event, 17 and Under 25 years age champion Eleanor Miller was particularly impressed with the performance of her horse Kaloona Kaydee. "The highlight for me was knowing that I was on top of an amazing young horse and that no matter what happened, whether I won or lost I knew that she is only at the beginning of her career. It was the feeling that at the end of
Eleanor Miller and her horse Kaloona Kaydee, 17 and Under 25 age champion pictured after the mounted presentation. the day I knew she had done her best and so had I, and that I was just a little bit luckier than the other two competitors." "I would also like to say that what makes these events amazing, and what makes me always want to come back is the people that attend and how well an event runs. I was lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people and to be included in an event that ran perfectly, including an amazing roast dinner," commented Eleanor. The Horse Report
Rider Profile of the month Robert Goodwin by Indiana Turner - Flash It Photography First Riding Experience I have been riding for as long as I can remember. My dad was a show jumper and my Grandad loved eventing. My brother David and I did a lot of shows as kids on some really fun ponies that taught us everything from how to jump to how to ride a buck. Instructor – Chris Chugg Every Rider Looks Up to Someone, Even The Athlete - Who Is Your Inspiration? My inspiration comes from the European riders. They always come across so professionally no matter the situation. What Do You Look For In A Horse Temperament and Conformation. I love the modern Holstein Warm bloods that are a lighter version of the older heavier types. One of the main reasons we were so keen on Copilot. We also breed some TB into our horses so keep the lighter type but still the athleticism. How Many Horses Are You Competing and Training We have up to 25 horses in work at any one time including our own young horses as well as clients horses to train and start. Hobbies Or Things You Like To Do If You Ever Get Spare Time I have justified my pilots licence and plane (Jabiru J230c) by telling myself it’s for flying to my clinics to instruct but I actually just really enjoy flying Is There Someone That Has Supported You With Your Venture In the Equine World I have many people who have supported me making it possible to compete. It is impossible to be a professional show jumper in the current environment without a big team of people all aiming for the same goal. All the way through both of my parents have helped with anything I need. My partner Christy and her parents Paul and Andrea have also been a huge part in us setting up our business in Dayboro.
Robert instructing at Nambour summer school Page 38
Robert has a love of Flying Best Moments In Your Riding Career One of the best moments in my Career so far is gaining my MES for Athens Olympics while competing for Australia in the Nations Cup in Florida in 2004. I was riding Warrego Gidgea Coals, a $1000 thoroughbred that my dad bought as a 4 year old and taught to jump. Your Highest Achievements I won my first grand prix when I was 13 at Pittsworth Show I competed in my first World Cup when I was 16 I won my first World Cup when I was 18 (at the time the youngest rider in Australia to have won one) Australian Young Rider of the Year 2004 I have competed for Australia in Korea twice, USA, Germany 4 times and 4 times for Qld in NZ. The major titles I’ve won include - winning World Cups in Bega and Brisbane Royal -2 Qld Senior 1.50m state titles. - The Betty McVean Memorial A and B grade in Wodonga - Currently Co-pilot is the 6th placed horse in Australia and the highest placed stallion.
Robert Goodwin's magnificent "Warrego Sandon Do You Have Any Horses That You Believe Are Coming Through The Ranks And Will Potentially Be A Future Superstar We have quite a few 5 year olds that are all quite exciting including two young colts. One is a ¾ brother to Warrego Jericho that my brother David made the short list for WEG this year. We have 9 foals coming this year, 4 already foaled, so we can only hope for a similar amount of success in the future as we have had in past.
