The Horse Report

The annual Big October Ride held by the Dayboro Trail Riding Club will this year take participants over new routes providing spectacular scenic views.

Trail ride takes in new territory It’s that time of year again and The Dayboro Trail Riding Club will be holding their 18th annual Big October Ride on Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23. This year the Saturday ride has changed from previous years where the club held a short and a long ride. This year on the Saturday, the club has combined the rides and will hold a six hour ride with a morning tea and lunch stop leaving the showgrounds at 8.30am. As per the last two years, there will also be a short Sunday ride of 2 ½ hours for those riders not wanting to do a long ride and will also leave from the showgrounds but at a later time of 9am. The Trail Riders will try to vary the rides so this year so that they will follow a different route to last year. Participants will get to ride on private property where people

are not usually able to access and this will provide for some beautiful scenic riding. It will be a spectacular sight when up to 200 riders ride down the main street of Dayboro to start off the ride. It has become a much loved highlight of the event for spectators and especially children to watch all the horses going through town. The club has organised for BBQ catering for Friday and Saturday nights and a bar with a campfire on both nights. Lunch is also available to purchase for the Saturday ride. It will be a meat and salad roll and a piece of cake at the cost of $9 and will be catered for by the Dayboro Bakery. This must be pre-ordered and paid for on the nomination form or by the morning of the ride. For contact details see the advert in this issue or log on to www.trailriders.com.au Even the watering holes on the Big October Ride provide a great photographic opportunity.

Nettle

is perhaps best known as a highly nutritious feed herb/fodder for animals, and has been used through the ages for this purpose, occasionally even cultivated en masse and mown to provide ‘hay’ for milk cows. It is considered a spring tonic and detoxifier for human and animal alike. It is rich in chlorophyll, and is an excellent source of calcium, chromium, magnesium, zinc, cobalt, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, protein, riboflavin, selenium, silicon, thiamine, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. No wonder then that nettle is such an appetiser, and conditioning restorative tonic for horses. It is reputed to enhance coat shine and dappling.

Clivers

has antiseptic qualities and is a general detoxifier. High in Silica, it assists in the management and treatment of skin disorders. It is a herb used for treating the urinary system, but as many herbs can be used to treat urinary tract infections, professional herbal advice is recommended to get the most appropriate herb for the specific problem area. Also used to ease swollen legs and joints, support the lymphatic and endocrine systems and encourage the elimination of toxins, Clivers is also helpful if your horse experiences muscle tightening during or after exercise.

Feeding tips for dressage horses Written by ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist and Product Formulator ©2016 You would all know the basics of feeding horses but moving on from there and considering that you are in the field of dressage which requires a fit healthy horse, it is necessary to have the right tools to ensure correct nutrition. Don't panic because equine nutrition is not that complicated Relax - certainly there are longwinded calculations that can be made to reach the correct level of nutrients. But that important word observation is the key in many ways. You can always tell if your horse is healthy, shiny coat, good mental attitude, bright eye and the ability to perform the level of work required If you are feeding a diet that is of good quality and one that is high in roughage then you are certainly on the right path, however for performance horses there may well be some things missing in this type of diet such as supplements. A horse's daily diet should include about 40 different nutrients in all: the proper amounts of energy and protein; 15 different minerals, plus chlorine; 14 different vitamins, plus beta-carotene; fat; water; and at least four amino acids (lysine, methionine, tryptophan, and threonine). Most equine diets may well supply the majority of these nutrients. Some nutrients such as protein, digestible energy (DE), calcium, phosphorus, and selenium could be supplied in excess or insufficient amounts. For growing horses and this means young dressage horses that are in work, zinc and copper should be added. Levels of vitamins A and E also can be a concern for growing horses and those in full work, so these vitamins need to be taken into consideration when formulating a feed regime. Before you begin formulating your feed ration, you need to know a few essential things: Is your dressage horse a young horse? A young horse will require a different diet?

Proper dietary nutrition is crucial for ensuring performance horses, such as those in dressage remain in peak condition. Is your horse in light work, or perhaps not in work currently due to injury for example? If your horse is performing a medium level of work then his energy requirements will be different to a horse in full work? Are you planning on increasing your horse's workload? Will your horse's workload remain constant, so do you have a work program for your horse? Is your horse's body condition appropriate? When considering which feed to give horse there are a few factors to consider, is the feed you have chosen easy to access, what about cost? Knowing your horse’s' body weight is quite helpful but not absolutely essential, estimations will normally suffice. However for a more accurate body weight you can use this calculation: The amount of feed being fed each day

should be between 1.5% and 3.0% of your horse's body weight. Remember that every horse is biochemically unique and factors such as temperament, age, location, previous conditions etc will have an impact on what you should be feeding your horse. I always recommend weighing feed - this allows accuracy, just guessing can create problems. This includes your hay and hard feeds. Hay weights can vary substantially too so weighing hay is a great idea; also Lucerne Hay will be different weights to grass or oaten hays. Feeding a diet high in roughage will almost guarantee a healthy digestive system too. The chart below is an excellent guide to the level of roughage required; always remember that every horse is different. Those horses that carry their weight too well will obviously need less feed to prevent the risk of conditions such as laminitis. Continued page 9

A natural diet has multiple benefits From page 8 What to feed I like to see the average horse's diet consisting of approximately 50% roughage. So of the 1.5% to 3% total feed an adult horse consumes daily, he should receive a minimum of 0.75% pasture, hay, or other roughage sources. Formulating feed rations I always recommend a very natural diet; this is not only cost effective and controllable, but much healthier for your horse. So you can be accurate I have included our free diet analysis Important Points to remember * When you are changing your horse's diet do it slowly over a minimum of 5-10 days * If the diet is not working for some reason seek help, you have my contact now so don't go on without professional advice * Don't forget to weigh your feed and if you change from legume hay (lucerne, etc) to pasture of oaten make sure you remember to weigh them again. * Occasionally horses can be picky but normally healthy horses have an excellent appetite. So if your horse is difficult to feed consider that there may be some digestive health issues going on. * Should your horse finish his feed and is still looking for more increase the hay component? However the best option is to have

* Accessing good quality hay is essential * Most grains have an inverted calcium:phosphorus ratio-that is, they contain more phosphorus than calcium. Balance with hay, which has more calcium than phosphorus (especially in the case of legumes). * Look at providing your horse with assistance by way of a daily formula and joint support. * To reduce the risk of colic and other digestive health issues make sure you feed your horse often but in smaller feeds, horses are herbivores and are perpetual grazing animals, they need to eat constantly. * Finally ensure your horse has his teeth checked every six months by a professional dentist and make sure you have a well organised worming program To discuss your horse’s feed requirements please contact me on 03 97756422 or email antoinette@hiform.com.au Ideally, the average horse’s diet should consist of at least 50% roughage.

your horse out on pasture not only to provide constant roughage but also for his mental and physical health. * Soil testing also an excellent way to discover any deficiencies which can be corrected by simply supplementing. * Provide fresh water at all times.

Supa-blend Gold Supa-blend Gold is a new nutritional supplement just launched onto the market which combines the well-known benefits of turmeric, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil and honey. This carefully formulated blend of ingredients makes supa-blend Gold an ideal supplement for horses and dogs that may assist with common conditions such as allergic skin irritations, stomach ulcers, Queensland itch, arthritis and other inflammatory ailments. Turmeric contains the active ingredient, curcumin which is reputed to be an anti-inflammatory reducing the impact of overloaded inflammatory pathways in the body. It may assist with different diseases including allergies, arthritis and inflammatory skin conditions, insulin resistance and blood flow in the body. Coconut oil's nutritional and antimicrobial benefits, being a saturated fat, are known to increase muscle glycogen storage. Coconut oil is easier to digest absorb and convert to muscle energy than other vegetable oils. By improving gut health, the body is assisted with its own anti-viral and anti-bacterial protection mechanisms. Apple cider vinegar may act as a natural antibiotic, increase joint function and balance pH levels and is also widely known for its benefits in preventing arthritis and improving joint movement. Honey consists of enzymes that may enhance the digestion of foods particularly carbohydrates. Honey is known a a natural prebiotic and the consumption of honey may help gut health through increasing bifodobacteria populations. So combining these ingredients into one product and feeding at the suggested feeding rate of 30ml daily for a 450kg animal, Supa-blend Gold may greatly improve your horse's wellbeing and help alleviate inflammations, stomach ulcers , arthritis and skin allergies. Supplement for a calm healthy horse Supplements supplier "Calm Healthy Horses" provides an invaluable perspective on how grass affects horses and in doing so, has solved the vast majority of mild to serious health and behaviour issues experienced by the modern horse owner. There are two categories of Calm Healthy Horses supplements: FOR OVERALL HEALTH: 1.Supreme Vit & Min - is the highest spec multi-vitamin and mineral supplement available in Australia. It compensates for the fact domestic horses cannot roam and forage from a wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees as can their wild relatives 2. XtraCal - a high quality blend when additional calcium is required. For breeding, lactating, or growing horses and those grazing oxalate grasses 3. ShipShape - fortified bio-available amino acids. A potassium free source of quality protein for horses who have had a nutritional setback, who lack top-line or who have increased protein requirement from breeding or working demands FOR ADDRESSING ISSUES (caused by Aspects of Pasture that are adversely affecting the horse's health and behaviour): 1. GrazeEzy - along with the addition of salt helps rectify the mineral imbalances in vegetative grass. Indicated for horses exhibiting signs of 'increased excitability' (twitchy, spooky, over-reactive, cresty, 'footy'). Useful to help horses deal with problem grass long term.

Page 10

Calm Healthy Horses supplements are formulated to correct mineral imbalances inherent in our domestic horse's forage (we know this from the many analyses of grass and hay we have conducted). Horses today are being kept on ever decreasing blocks of land on a 'green carpet' of grass which is far from ideal. Therefore we help you to ensure the total diet is suitable by including helpful recommendations regarding what you can and can't feed, which hay will be most suitable and we also assist with pasture management strategies when necessary.

Serious 'Separation Anxiety' can be avoided by addressing mineral imbalances. Horses in this state are a danger to themselves and anybody trying to handle them 2. SOS - for seriously 'grass-affected' horses. Designed to be fed high dose, SOS has literally saved horses’ lives by addressing issues usually destined for the 'too hard basket'! 3. Alleviate - for times of stress, Alleviate can be fed daily and doubled the night before and the morning of events, stressful occasions like competitions or race-day, dentist, farrier, being started, travelling 4. ToxDefy - for mycotoxins especially in times and regions of high humidity.

Aspects of Pasture that can adversely affect your horse For 'Grass-Affected' horses there is no one supplement that fixes all because there are multiple aspects of pasture that can adversely affect them. And which one affects them can depend on the time of the year, what the weather is doing and what species of grass and its stage of growth. zMineral imbalances (worst in short green or lush green fertilized pastures) zNFC (sugar & starch content, especially in high production grasses/clovers) zMycotoxins (especially in perennial ryegrass and regions/times of humidity) zFluorescing Pigments (especially in dark green plants like clover) zHormonally active compounds (Mainly in legumes like Lucerne & clover)

Achieving a horse’s full potential requires health management The EMMETT Technique is an amazingly gentle, safe and simple to apply muscle release therapy developed by Australian Ross Emmett. It is used to address pain and discomfort, improve body movement, restore a positive emotional state and improve the quality of life. Taught in more than 26 countries worldwide, it is equally effective on both people and animals and can play a key role in releasing performance of a horse according to leading EMMETT Therapist Gary Wells from the Gary Wells Practitioner Group. Gary (pictured) has performed over 25,000 treatments of Equine Performance Management across all disciplines. He is The Master of EMMETT4Horses Therapy in Australia. “Whenever I treat a horse as an Emmett therapist; the first thing I do is conduct an assessment,” he said. “I take into account the horse’s physical appearance and visual condition which includes confirmation and focus on the feet, teeth, diet and muscles. “All of these elements have a significant impact not only on the health, well-being and performance of the horse but also on my ability to provide an effective and sustainable treatment. “No matter how effective I am as a muscle therapist, there is no denying that unless the feet, teeth and diet aspects are also adequately addressed and maintained you will not achieve your horse’s full potential.”. For this reason the Gary Wells Practitioner Group is proud to endorse the Calm Healthy Horse range of supplements. These supplements have a proven result platform when used in conjunction with a very simple feeding regime which feeds the whole horse, eliminating the need for targeted (hoof, coat, digestive, and often joint) products. Calm Healthy Horses have a simple but profound formula and philosophy backed up by many, many success stories, that optimum health and performance can be achieved when we change our focus from “getting the horse right’ to “getting it right for the horse”. “We are proud to introduce our GWPG Performance Packs, specially formulated to help you achieve your horse’s optimum health, wellbeing and performance,” he said. The keys to balancing minerals By LARISSA BILSTON, Nutritionist, Equine Vit&Min Ensuring that your horses are getting their recommended daily allowances of vitamins and minerals is a science in itself. But simply giving them enough minerals isn't quite enough to ensure adequate nutrition. Some minerals interfere with the absorption of others, so that too much of one can cause a deficiency in another even if you supply 100% of the horse's daily needs. Australian horse owners are well aware of the importance of balancing calcium to phosphorous and calcium to oxalate ratios to maintain calcium availability. (Note that oxalates are not minerals, but this ratio has an important impact on calcium availability). Having these ratios correct is necessary to prevent the risks of Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, also known as “Big Head” or “Bran Disease” to horses grazing high oxalate subtropical coastal pastures or those on very high bran/millrun/cereal diets. Guidelines to aim for regarding calcium balance include: - The calcium to oxalate ratio must be greater than 0.5 parts calcium for every one part oxalate especially for growing horses or those kept for long periods of time on these pastures. - The calcium to phosphorous ratio needs to be between 1-3 parts calcium for every one part phosphorous for growing horses and

Page 12

Balancing the correct amount of minerals and vitamins is crucial to ensuring optimum health in your horse. between 1-6 parts calcium for every one part phosphorous for a mature horse, leaning towards the high end for a horse grazing moderate/high oxalate pastures. (Hint: feeding additional limestone can be a cheap solution to boost the calcium content of a diet). - Keep the total calcium intake below five times dietary requirement.

Other mineral ratios of importance include: - Some nutritionists recommend that calcium to magnesium should lie in the range of 1-2 parts of calcium for every part of magnesium (Hint: Magnesium oxide is an affordable and effective ingredient to boost magnesium levels in the diet).

Pasture testing determine needs  From page 8

- Zinc to copper should be between 2-3 parts zinc for every part copper. - Iron to copper should be between 5-7 parts iron for every part copper - Manganese and copper should be between 3-5 parts manganese for every part copper. Anecdotal evidence shows that horses under stress or behaving with anxiety may benefit from a calcium to magnesium ratio down the low end of the spectrum. Correct levels of copper, zinc well balanced with iron and manganese are necessary to allow the body to make the pigments that colour hair. When these ratios have been out of balance and a correction is made, a sun bleached horse can very quickly turn into one with enhanced coat colour intensity and a rich glow. Toxicity and out-of-balance mineral ratios are of particular concern for performance horses when fed high levels of grain or when multiple fortified energy sources (pellets or mixed grains) are fed. How can I check the mineral balance of my horse’s diet? The first step is to calculate or estimate (by weight) the amounts of each type of feed including hard feeds, additives, pasture and hay your horse eats each day. The label or

packaging of many bagged feeds contains details of the vitamin and mineral profile of the feed. Most manufacturers will happily provide this information on request or via a website also. To be absolutely sure about the mineral balance of a diet, you will need to send a sample of your pasture and/or hay away to be analysed for mineral content. The cost of conducting such a test can often be offset by the savings to be made in providing only the minerals needed for balance. Where a horse is grazing the same pasture for years or many months supply of hay is purchased and stored, sending a sample is well advised. However, many horse owners keep horses on agistment and have little control over grazing and pasture management, or buy hay from different sources week to week meaning that plant tissue testing of mineral content is not a viable option. In this case, ‘average’ values for mineral content of pastures and hay are available from databases to use as estimates. Once you have the numbers, the next step is to enter them into a spreadsheet or computerised horse diet analysis tool. Add up the amounts of each mineral provided by all food sources and compare these with the minimum daily requirements for your horse based on age, weight, reproductive status and work load. The National

Research Council’s 2007 Nutrient Requirements of Horses is a widely respected publication containing detailed recommendations on dietary needs of different classes of horses. It is available free online at http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_i d=11653. You may need to add a supplement or individual mineral sources to meet recommended minimum daily requirements. Remember that the NRC figures are the MINIMUM level required to avoid a deficiency and that the OPTIMUM level may be much higher, and may vary amongst individuals. The NRC also publishes accepted levels of toxicity of each mineral where known, and it pays to check that the levels in your horse’s diet fall well short of toxic levels. Iodine and selenium are the two minerals with the smallest window of safety. Finally calculate the mineral ratios and check that they fall within the recommended ranges. Professional Help is Available If all this seems too daunting, you can consult with an Equine Nutritionist who will also help you with a diet plan to optimize your horse’s feeds and correctly balance the mineral ratios. Many feed and supplement companies offer this service to customers free of charge, or you can contract an independent nutritionist to perform the analysis.

discharge occurs. However, as soon as a second episode in the same horse presents, intensive investigation is warranted. In particular, the early stages can be very difficult to diagnose. Ethmoid haematomas are not regarded as a cancer. They are haemorrhage of the vessels in the ethmoid turbinates, that is contained within an extremely thick fibrous capsule. The ethmoid turbinates are primarily associated with sensory perceptions, particularly smell, and are a very sensitive structure. For some reason, the vessels in the area start to bleed and seem unable to clot and self heal. Slow insidious bleeding occurs over months and years, and the enclosed mass slowly increases in size.

A not uncommon diagnosis in horses over the years has been the syndrome known as Progressive Ethmoid Haematoma. This is a very serious growth that occurs in the sinus’ of the skull, at the back of the nasal cavity, and just in front of the brain. It is more common in older horses, but we have seen it in horses as young as four-years-old. The usual sign that prompts the owner to consult the vet is an episode of bleeding, usually from one nostril, but in almost all cases, there has been a history of a prolonged, seemingly minor, one sided muco-purulent nasal discharge that preceded the bleed. The horse is usually clinically normal and seemingly unaffected, there is rarely any cough. There are no visible external signs that may alert owners to an issue. In our practice, any report of nasal discharge, particularly one sided, is regarded as potentially very serious and usually indicative of either a primary sinus

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS There are many other possible causes of nose bleeds that have to be considered. Obviously haematomas are one, but other possibilities include: Sinus trauma/fracture, Guttural pouch mycosis, Sinus cyst, Sinusitis – (usually associated with a tooth), Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage, Foreign body, Ulcerative or fungal rhinitis, Pulmonary abscess/neoplasia, or very rarely haemorrhage due to some blood clotting disorder. DIAGNOSIS Obviously a very full and detailed clinical examination including history and specific examination of all the structures in the head is essential, but with haematomas, endoscopy and radiology are the keys. Everyone immediately jumps to endoscope examination as the modality of choice, but in a very large number of cases, particularly early on, many of the growths will not be seen. It must be remembered that the actual growth is occurring deep within the frontal sinus. There is a small portal in the back of the nasal cavity that gives a view of the outer edges of the ethmoid turbinate which must be examined specifically, and a small scope can be passed deep into this structure but it is not easy. Radiology is far more definitive, but again small lesions can be difficult to identify and it requires very refined technique. One point to bear in mind is that Hendra vaccination prior to these detailed examinations of the head is essential as these investigations expose personnel to a very high risk of exposure to body fluids. Treatment is complex and expensive From page 14

The earlier the diagnosis is made, the better the chance of a successful treatment can be anticipated. TREATMENT Once the haematoma has established and has started to grow, doing nothing is not an option. The lesion can be present many years, as they take a very long time to grow, but eventually they are going to reach a stage where the horse has to be put down. Many factors have to be considered, particularly the age and use of the horse, but eventually they become an issue, so if preservation of the horse is important, (and in all cases this is not implying that all horses are not important and very much loved), all the circumstances have to be assessed particularly financial constraints. Treatment of ethmoid haematomas, in our hands, offers a very reasonable prognosis for success, but it is very expensive and ongoing and involves a lot of aftercare and management. Saying that, we believe that initial surgical removal is the only definitive approach to treatment.

There are many who feel that conservative management, usually in the form of intralesional injection of formalin, is a valid approach. This technique involves passage of a catheter up the nose, under endoscopic direction, insertion of a needle into the haematoma, and injection of formalin. The theory is that the formalin coagulates and “kills” the haematoma and eventually leads to its regression. Certainly in theory this is correct, but bear in mind that I have said that most of the lesion is not visible from the nose as it is deep within the sinus, and the only part that can be injected is that which can be seen. It is very difficult to inject enough chemical into the visible part to obliterate the whole structure. At best, it can slow the onset and progression, but almost inevitably, complete correction will only occur with surgery. The required surgery is not for the faint hearted. The horse is operated on under general anaesthesia. A large bone flap is created into the frontal sinus, the haematoma exposed, and then removed by

Treatment of ethmoid haematomas offers a reasonable degree of success but is expensive and requires a lot of aftercare.

curettage. The bleeding is copious, and cannot be controlled by ligation. Time and efficiency at surgery is critical and experience with the operator is very important. The key is to very quickly remove the tissue, and then control the haemorrhage by compression packing, “stuffing the sinus cavity with gauze material, and closing the bone flap. A portal is created from the sinus into the nasal passage, and the end of the gauze strip is passed down to the nostril and sutured in place. The horse is

allowed to recover. As bad as this all sounds, we have had good success over the years. Obviously blood pressure management and precise anaesthesia is critical. The packing is removed after three to four days and most horses do very well. Aftercare now becomes very important. Obviously we have removed a lot of tissue from the nasal cavity sinus, and it is now possible to visualise deep into the sinus with the endoscope. Also, I have said the haemorrhage originates from the sensitive turbinate bones, and there are often remnants of these structures left. Re-growths are very common, but we can now see them much more easily and get to them when they are very small. These respond well to formalin injection and so the protocol is to schedule frequent revisits and examinations, and deal with recurrences as they occur, and are still very small. We have had very good success with many horses over the years, and our expectation is that horses have a very reasonable prospect of returning to full athletic activity after the surgery.

Offers over $750,000 will be considered.

The Horse Report

Tanja gains a lot from US ‘development tour’ By BOB ANTHONY Australian horse trainer Tanja Kraus once again ventured to the United States on what she called a ‘personal development tour’ but actually proved to be a lot of fun as well as being very educational. The tour was to visit the City Limits Ranch in Watsonville, California where Kerrin Hoban and Diane (Dink) Evans operate a non-profit organization that provides natural horsemanship opportunities to children, teenagers and at-risk youth. It was there that Tanja and partner Phil Monaghan both prepared for another assault on the Cowboy Dressage World finals and Top Hand for 2016. She also got the opportunity to hold a clinic at the ranch where each person was able to 'bring a topic' that they wanted to work on, and then everyone worked on the same thing. I managed to catch up with Tanja on her return and asked about the trip: Where the horses that were provided at City Limits Ranch different from those you rode last time? No. We were able to ride the same horses that we did last year - Triscuit, and Smoky. Triscuit was bred by the ranch and competes in working cow horse events, Smoky is a retired (from injury) roping horse that is used by the ranch in their programs to teach at risk youth about horsemanship. Did your experience from last trip help you

so the competition side didn't bother him, he was simply more knowledgeable about what to expect this year. (At the show, both Phil and Tanja competed in the Top Hand, with Phil placing in the top 5 in his division. They continued with the finals competition - five rings and over 1000 entries and both Aussies bringing home multiple placings in their divisions.)

Gaining valuable experience in the discipline of Cowboy Dressage was one of the aims of a recent trip to the US for Tanja Kraus and partner Phil Monaghan.

ease back in to a routine/training regime? It was great, because we felt that we had a pretty good idea about how to ride the horses once we had spent time with them last year. We actually were joking on the flight back home last year that we had finally reached a point of knowing how to ride them, once the show was over. Were you and Phil more relaxed at this year's show having experienced the event last year? Yes. Last year when we arrived I was quite nervous as I had not competed for around 10 years, this year I was more relaxed because I knew what to expect. Phil is quite a seasoned competitor in his martial arts training,

What was it like to give a clinic in the US? A lot of fun! I had 15 riders in the clinic and they were just a fantastic bunch! I was nervous to start with, as they were all pretty experienced riders who had done plenty of clinics before, but as soon as I started talking, I was in my element! Did the participants bring any 'topics' that you hadn't encountered before or was it a case of horse issues being universal regardless of where you are from? I ran the clinic as a 'bring your own topic' event, so I was able to help people in a lot of different areas. The topics weren't too different from what you run into here and the solutions were exactly what I would use here in Australia. The biggest difference I found was the participants - the USA has an abundance of horsemanship clinicians and horse trainers - there is pretty much one on every corner, so I found the participants very knowledgeable about horsemanship, and therefore the clinic started at a different place to where most 'first clinics' would start. “As well as being an outstanding horsewoman, Tanja is an excellent communicator and teacher. So the take-home value of her clinics is huge. Her ability to read each rider and each horse enables her to tailor her advice and instruction in the most productive and effective way. Tanja’s guidance and support has transformed the way I ride and handle my horses and I cannot recommend her clinics highly enough.” Paula Todd, Bangalow, NSW.

The Horse Report

Understanding the diversity of learning Are you always looking for ways to improve your coaching skills? Are you interested in how we learn, and the characteristics of different thinking styles? Would you like to quickly and easily identify the learning style of the student/s in your lesson? Would you like to better understand the human brain and how individual learners need tailored coaching techniques? Did you know there are four very distinct learning and behavioral characteristics of the equestrian athlete? The same goes for coaches and that shows through in our coaching styles. Are you a coach who is sequential, likes processes and steps to achieve a certain goal or are you a big picture thinker. Always looking for the end goal and loves taking risks and challenging yourself. Do you love the technical aspect, and logical and proven reasons behind why you use particular exercises or are you and emotional, sensory coach who likes to discuss skills with their rider in an expressive way. This is important to know, as your student needs you to be able to coach them in a way that they can associate with, this means adapting our coaching style to suit the client. So how do we know what category our student falls into?

Mary Brell, director of Keys To Success

Easy! We can show you how to quickly identify what your students learning styles are, through understanding particular visual, auditory and connective cues. The next step is to understand how to adapt your exercise/task/skill etc so the learning environment is such, that retention rates are

increased, conflict decreased and collaboration is encouraged. Isn’t that something we all look towards? Let’s really get together and make some positive changes to the lives of our students, and their families by spending two days developing ourselves as great teachers and better communicators! So who can teach us all this stuff? Mary Brell from “Keys to success is a qualified HBDI and Seven Habits of Highly Effective People facilitator, a professional educator, and learning and development specialist who resides in Orange. Mary is on the Westpac 100 most influential women of Australia list and has delivered talks and seminars on Personalised Learning at International Conferences all over the world including Beijing, Austria, Nepal, South Africa, USA and Canada for over 35 years . Mary is now available to help equestrian coaches in Australia become not only great coaches, but brilliant and inspiring teachers, motivational men and women who are ready and willing to make some positive change in equestrian sport. Heavy horses help Life Flight

Tom Quilty comes to gold rush country

Lovers of heavy horses will be in their element on Sunday, October 23 when MIck Bradford hosts the 16th annual RACQ Heavy Horse demonstration at Yangan. Held on his property at 122 Swanfels Road, about 15 minutes from Warwick and approximately two hours from Brisbane, the day serves as a fundraiser for the RACQ Life Flight service as well as showing what these gentle giants are capable of. This is a unique opportunity to see how things use to been - a true display of pure horsepower. Displays will include Mick working his famous horseworks or whim which pumps water, threshes corn and slices pumpkin. There will be heritage displays of an eight bullock team, haymaking , corn shelling, chaff making . a local blacksmith, wheelwrighting, whip cracking and exhibitions of axes, horse bits and harness making. "It's all about the heritage side of life," Mick said. "It's great for the kids to see what it's all about.”

The Victorian town of Lexton, located near Ballarat, will be the venue for the 2016 Tom Quilty Gold Cup on October 7-9. Lexton is in the heart of the gold rush region of Victoria and the area has been used for endurance riding in Victoria for over 15 years. Situated 40km north of Ballarat, Granite Hill Lexton was first described by Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836 – What he saw must have made a lasting impression, as his journal entry records ‘we descended into a valley of the finest description’. Today the pastoral industry remains the backbone of the region. For this year’s Quilty, course designer Sheryl Herbert, who has been competing in Endurance for more than 20 years and has been developing endurance courses for more than 15 years in the area, has sourced private land access to support the great riding in the Waterloo and Ben Major State Forests. For more information, visit the website at www.tomquilty2016.com.au

Mick Bradford will once again host the 16th annual RACQ Heavy Horse Day at his property at Yangan near Warwick on October 23.

The Killarney Lions will be selling food and drinks including damper, stew and billy tea and there will be an animal nursery and jumping castle for the kids

and market stalls as well. Activities commence from 9am and entry is $10 adults and kids up to 15 free. For more information, visit

Dalby prepares for annual Stock Horse sale Preparations are under way for the 2016 Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale, held every year on the first weekend in December. The sale has now grown to become the premier Australian Stock Horse sale in the country. Back in 2009 the sale was about to fold so the local committee of Darling Downs branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society, who were the owners of the sale, approached GDL to take over the sale management and marketing. The first GDL sale, in 2010 sold 98 out of 120 Stock Horses to average $8,000 and gross $790,250. Last year GDL sold 196 out of 231 entries to gross $1.7 million. An incentive competition was formed for past sale horses so as each year has progressed more and more Dalby graduates have become eligible to compete. These incentive campdrafts ran along side the traditional Open Campdraft competition. This year the competitions are only available to past sale horses and, for the first time, the horses catalogued this year are eligible, although in a restricted manner. There will be no "outside" horses on the showground, only those

past and present Dalby sale horses. A new Stockman Challenge competition has been included for younger horses, four years and under. Considering the drought conditions in Queensland for the last three to four years, the sale agents GDL have done extremely well to be able to double the sale volume in dollars and entries.

GDL are expecting that the improved rural economy due to the recent rains will lead to great demand from the station buyers. Last year mares increased their average from $8,000 to $10,000 11 mares sold for $20,000 or more to a top of $43,000. The geldings have increased in value from $5,600 in 2013 to $6,000 in 2014 and $6,600 last year. In the previous year 13 geldings sold for $10,000 or over

to a top of $15,000. Stallions have always been in small supply with offerings over the last six years from one to eighteen. Last year five stallions sold to a top of $20,000 to average $14,000. Younger horses sell well at Dalby and last year 48 geldings from two to four years sold from $2,500 to $12,000 to average $5,844. The Twilight Sale, on Saturday night last year, was a new and successful venture, so this will be taking place again this year, with approximately 50 high quality entries. GDL Stud Manager Harvey Weyman - Jones said there would be a few less entries this year, but quality would be up. “We are pleased that the local committee have approved most of our recommendations this year, after first proposing them three years ago,” he said. “We are totally focussed on improving the sale and to exclude 'outside' horses from the weekend, will be a great benefit to all sellers and buyers." The Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale is one from December 2-4 at the Dalby Showgrounds.

The Horse Report

Bootcamp offers an insight into Cowboy Dressage From page 25

him. The self carriage and lightness were impressive to say the least. I was also able to study Lesley as she taught her regular students, and we had many conversations about methods while I was there. I have added a heap to my toolbox which will be shared with my students!

Did the participants find your approach different to what they have been taught (and did they have a chuckle at your accent)? They told me that they really loved the way I deliver content, giving not only a solution to an issue but the reason why we are doing that particular thing at that particular time. My accent had them giggling a few times, but luckily by the end of the day I had learnt to round off my pronunciation of the letter R, that way when I said 'its beer o'clock' they understood, as the first time I said it I was asked what ‘bee o'clock’ was! Tanja was also fortunate enough to visit and stay at Blue Fountain Farm in California owned by renown equestrian competitor and trainer Lesley Deutsch for a few days and a Cowboy Dressage bootcamp as part of the trip. What was some of the key things which you drew from your time at Blue Fountain Farm which you can teach to your Australian 'students'? I think the biggest thing I am bringing home is that what we are doing is universal - I rode dressage horses, a reining horse, cow working horses, roping horses - and all of them I was able to ride well within a matter of minutes, and that was a pretty cool. I was also able to ride Lesley's personal horse

Tanja Kraus works on developing skills at the Cowboy Dressage bootcamp at Blue Fountain Farm in California.

Prado, and he was so highly trained and sensitive, any unintentional shift of weight would have him doing something. His lateral work was absolutely to die for. As an unexpected treat Lesley organised a visit to Eitan and Debbie Beth - Halachmy (the creators of Cowboy Dressage) and when we arrived Eitan was riding his horse 'Cheyenne Gold', to my surprise he offered me to ride

What were some of the points which you learned from the cowboy dressage bootcamp? The judges bootcamp was a whole lot of work, and a whole lot of fun packed into three days. Judging causes you to pay close attention to detail, to what is happening within each manoeuvre, and then picking a score that is fair for what you have just seen. I have judged dressage before, so I was comfortable with the timing of the tests, and working with a scribe, I really enjoyed that in Cowboy Dressage we are looking to be constructive and encouraging in the remarks and the focus is the partnership between the horse and rider. The biggest tip I can offer to riders - don't allow a mistake in one manoeuvre to ruin your entire test, learn how to move on from it. Finally, do you think there could be a possibility of taking a group of eager equestrians over the States to experience the shows as you have? I would love to! The Cowboy Dressage Worlds truly is like a big family reunion. Tons of fun, lots of horses and educational days - it doesn't get much better than that.
