The 2015 Australian International Three Day Event will be held in the heart of Adelaide from November 20-22.

Three Day Event to be biggest yet The 2015 Australian International Three Day Event (Aus3de), Australia's premier equestrian competition, promises to be bigger and better than before. More than $120,000 in prize money will be up for grabs in the only event of its kind held in the heart of Adelaide, from Friday, 20 November to Sunday, 22 November. With four action packed days of world class eventing, the debut of Australia's Equestrian Grand Final, the return of the popular Polo in the Park and a nail biting competition in the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2015 event is not to be missed. For the first time in history, the 2015 event welcomes the prestigious multidiscipline equestrian event, the Equestrian Grand Final, which will feature leading competitors from Olympic disciplines of World Cup dressage, jumping and eventing. Aus3DE Event Director Gillian Rolton said the 2015 Aus3de is shaping up to be a fantastic event, with plenty on offer. "As the sporting world heats up for the 2016 Rio Olympics, less than 12 months away, we can expect bigger entries than previous years, as well as tough competition across all classes,â&#x20AC;? she said. Could your horse have bighead? By TIFFANY BENNETT Olsson Pacific Salt Equine Specialist If you live in South East Queensland or Northern NSW, chances are your horse is at risk of getting bighead, a debilitating condition that causes lameness and extreme case the development of enlarged facial bones giving a bighead appearance. Bighead can be easily prevented with the provision of supplements however cases of this condition still appear every year. Sub-tropical and tropical paddocks tend to be quite green and lush year round however, there is a silent killer that is lurking within. Found in pasture species such as setaria, kikuyu, signal and buffalo grass, a compound called oxalate causes big problems for our four legged friends. When there is oxalate present within your pastures your horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to absorb calcium is compromised. Once digested, the oxalate forms calcium oxalate and this is what prevents your horse from being able to absorb their essential calcium requirement leading to calcium deficiency and bighead condition. Bighead is also known as nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism and osteodystrophis fibrosa. When horses experience extreme calcium deficiency their bodies look from within for their calcium needs and release a hormone that enables calcium to be reabsorbed from their bones.

Bighead results in the horse's facial bones becoming fibrous and swelling to give the horse a 'bighead' appearance

Once this starts occurring the horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bones are greatly weakened and bones are replaced with soft fibrous tissue. Once this happens it is irreversible. Clinical signs your horse may have bighead include the weight loss, lameness, stiff gait, joint tenderness, rough coat and in the most extreme cases the enlargement of the facial bone hence, the name bighead. Like most things, the best strategy is prevention. A McKenzie et al., (1981) study looked at horses with bighead in Queensland found that for over 10 months of the year the pastures they were on contained dangerously high level of oxalate

usually peaking to extremely high levels in January. It was concluded that even though most cases of bighead were detected in spring and summer sub-tropical and tropical pastures should be considered hazardous all year round. Treatment of bighead requires daily supplementation of both calcium and phosphorous. The idea is to overpower the oxalate. It is important to supplement with far more then their daily requirements as not all the calcium is absorbed. Daily supplementation is far better then weekly. Supplements can be in the form of a feed additive or a lick block. If you provide a lick block, horses will be able to self regulate their calcium intake, most horses will take what they need. If your supplementation is being effective, the clinical signs should improve. If possible, keep the horse off the pasture with the high oxalate grasses and continue the calcium supplementation year round. If you suspect your horse has or is showing any signs of bighead contact your vet immediately. Hendra court cases highlight vetsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; challenges Three Queensland veterinarians are facing charges relating to exposing themselves and/or others to potential Hendra risks while treating horses. According to an ABC report, the vets Dr Luke Annetts, from Bundaberg, Dr Janine Frances Dwyer, from Carbrook, south of Brisbane and Dr Matthew George Morahan, from the Gold Coast, are the first vets to ever face prosecution in Queensland under Section 28 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act, which requires workers to take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves, and others, while carrying out their duties. Hendra is a bat borne virus that is deadly to horses and humans, and its management is heavily regulated to limit the risk vets and horse handlers face while attending animals that may have it. Queensland equine veterinarian and the Hendra spokesman for Equine Veterinarians Australia, Dr Nathan Anthony, said the cases had shocked vets and their clients. "Amongst the veterinary community, (there is) lots of concern," he said. "Outside of the veterinary community, I think a lot of people are unaware of it. "Some who are not supporters of vaccination claim that these veterinarians just need to sharpen up a little bit, these veterinarians should just wear full personal protective equipment every time they see a horse and this is a hard disease to catch.â&#x20AC;? case has not been released but under the guidelines vets should wear full (PPE) to prevent transmission between themselves and potentially infected horses - or anyone else that might come into contact with the animal. If convicted of the category two offence of failing to comply with health and safety duty, each vet could face individual fines of up to $100,000. One of the vets involved, Dr Janine Dwyer, is a highly respected practitioner who was the Olympic Dressage and Paralympic Equestrian team vet in London in 2012. Her case relates to a horse she attended in May 2014, and she'll appear in the Southport Magistrates Court in November. Dr Matthew Morahan will also face the Southport Court in November, his case dates back to July 2013, while Dr Luke Annetts will appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court in October. It is understood Dr Annetts attended a horse with a history of chronic respiratory

illness on a Saturday in March last year, and left the owner with instructions for its treatment. Two days later it was put down, and tested positive to Hendra virus. Dr Anthony said horse owners were often unaware of both the health and professional risks they exposed their vets too when they choose not to vaccinate their animals. "The solution here really is that people with horses in high risk areas should vaccinate against Hendra," he said. He said Hendra virus is difficult to identify and tests can often take days to return a result, and in the meantime, the horse cannot be treated. "The difficulty is that until those results are provided and Hendra's been excluded, then that horse is being deprived treatment and sometimes it's being deprived lifesaving treatment and there's just not anything we can do about that at this stage," he said. He said the fact that these are the first vets to face this kind of prosecution in Queensland highlighted the challenges of dealing with the disease. "I think it reflects the fact that it is incredibly difficult for veterinarians to meet their obligations under the Workplace Health and Safety Act," he said. A spokesman for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said the cases were all in their early stages, and no other details would be released. confirmed.

actually when is the mare actually due to foal? The normal gestation period of a mare is a very wide time frame of between 320 and 360 days. Most foalings dates between these intervals are normal and the quoted time of 336 - 340 days is average. The normal foal is born when it's uterine development and maturity is determined by internal signals to be optimum for survival. Actually predicting when the mare is going to foal can be very difficult and the owner can only use best practice to guide them. Most mares will commence udder development approximately one month prior to foaling with progressive development and swelling to a large firm udder with "wax" appearing on the ends of the teats 24 - 48 hours prior to birth. The mare’s belly will loosen and "drop" in the week or two prior to foaling and as the actual time approaches, the perineal tissues will also soften and relax and the vulva dilates and becomes flaccid. Most mares will foal in the very early hours of the morning, often just prior to dawn. Some mares, particularly maidens, can be very shy and be upset by owners maintaining a close vigil, and actually delay the event. Give the mare some space and only observe from an unobtrusive distance. The mare should be familiarised and housed in the area that the owner intends her to foal for at least the month prior to birth. This can be a clean open paddock or in a foaling stall, depending on the individual circumstances. Most facilities can be suitable, the important point is that the mare should be comfortable and familiar with her surroundings. Certainly, the owner should attempt to provide an area that is easily accessible and provides opportunity for easily locating and checking on the mare during the night close to the foaling time. It is advisable to immunise the

Without question, the sight of a newly born foal frolicking in the paddock beside it's mother in the first days of life is immensely uplifting and one of the real natural pleasures of nature. Fortunately most mares foal without problems and the experience of breeding your own foal is both rewarding and trouble free. As the pleasure horse industry rapidly expands, more and more people are undertaking the experience of breeding their own foal. To the new and inexperienced owner, the pathway to achieving this goal appears daunting and somewhat intimidating, primarily because of a relative lack of knowledge and understanding of what is normal. The cliche, "Observant Neglect" is the best premise to guide the rookie through the process. The mare manager must know what is normal, observe the birthing process from a very discreet distance and only intervene if something is going wrong. Much more harm is done by inexperienced lay people attempting to "help" what is mostly a perfectly normal event than by staying out of the way and allowing nature to take care of an event that has

mare with a tetanus booster approximately six weeks prior to foaling and I like to last worm the mare no closer than two months using a simple ivermectin based medication. All medicines are drugs and some mares may react to the medication and if the pregnancy is a little unstable, foaling can be prematurely induced and a disaster eventuate. Nevertheless, it is important to ensure the mare is worm free as the new born foal is very susceptible to worm damage and will quickly become infected if the mare is passing eggs. The owner should check to ensure that the mare was not "Caslicked" at the breeding farm which is a surgical closing of the lips of the vulva to enhance fertility. If this has been done, the closed vulva should be opened by the vet approximately 4 - 6 weeks prior to the expected foaling date. This is to cover mares that will naturally foal "early", and not allow the tissues to reheal or infection to develop, in those mares that may naturally foal late. If the caslick is not opened and foaling occurs, mares can suffer severe lacerations and the foal may actually asphyxiate. The most common problem that occurs during this prenatal period is excessive udder development with swelling and oedema along the belly as a result of inflammation in the udder. Some mares can become very stiff and uncomfortable and may need medication. A much more serious problem is actual streaming of milk prior to foaling. If this occurs, and particularly at a relatively early time frame in the gestation, it could mean serious problems are occurring with the palcenta and veterinary advice must be obtained. Streaming of the milk also results in loss of colostrum and valuable antibodies necessary for the foal’s immunity. Other problems that can occur relatively commonly are various symptoms of colic and abdominal discomfort, both from the size of the foal and faecal impaction, and more seriously, laminitis. The veterinarian must be contacted immediately. The actual period of parturition also involves three stages. The first stage is the longest and may take up to 12 - 18 hours, usually longer in the maiden mare. During this time, the mare is restless and often uncomfortable and it is the period when the foal is actually being presented and engaged in the pelvis.

Foaling - what’s normal or abnormal From Page 10 The placenta is commencing to open and dilate the cervix so that the foal can passage the birth canal. Most mares will still be eating and functioning normally. The owner will notice a distinct change in behaviour and this is usually the best guide that the time is coming. She should not be spending a lot of time on the ground, sweating excessively, or straining unduly. Again, I must stress that this is what happens with most mares and is not always the case. Some mares, particularly those who have had several foals can exhibit almost no signs during stage one. Stage two, the actual delivery of the foal, is usually very quick and more often than not, the owner will miss it. During this time, the mare will commence extremely vigorous and even violent contractions as uterus expels the foal. Certainly it is not uncommon to be complete in 20 - 30 minutes. If the contractions and extreme discomfort continue longer than 90 - 120 minutes, there is probably some problem. My rule of thumb is that the owner should be able to notice some progress on a continual scale and if this is happening, leave the mare alone. Normally one foot appears, then the other somewhat behind. Next the nose and slowly the head emerges. Progress to the shoulder stage can take a while, and then all of a sudden, the shoulders pass and the foal is quickly expelled. Do not interfere if this can be seen. Also, the foal normally rotates slightly as it passes the birth canal. Many owners think the foal is coming "crooked" and attempt to straighten the foal. This is normal. What is abnormal is to have only one leg, one leg and the nose, the nose and no leg, or a tail. These situations are a dire emergency and help is urgently required. The third stage of foaling is the expulsion of the afterbirth. This often occurs with the foal, but usually will happen 1 - 4 hours after foaling. The mare can once again experience severe contractions and be down and straining, often stimulated by hormone release as the foal suckles the udder as another example of one of natures innovations. If the afterbirth has not been expelled by 8 - 12 hours, help should be obtained. Now comes one of the most critical periods in the foal’s life and this is where most problems will occur if things aren't right. It is absolutely essential for the

normal foal to quickly progress to the stage of being able to stand and actually suckle the mare’s udder. This is necessary for two primary reasons. Firstly, the foal is born without any natural immunity and must obtain the first milk or colostrum from the mare. This milk is rich in protective antibodies and the foal’s intestines have a unique characteristic of the cells being open in a "meshlike" pattern allowing the large antibody molecules to be absorbed intact without being digested and taken into the foal's bloodstream. Once the sucking stimulus has been recognised by the foal's body, these open cells close and the antibodies can no longer be absorbed. Of even more importance, is the fact that these open cells also allow bacteria to pass and enter the foal's system and the longer the cells remain open, the more opportunity there is for bacteria to invade the body and cause disease. It is essential therefore that the foal achieves these milestones quickly and if this occurs, then the likelihood is that the whole process will be a happy and memorable occasion for all concerned. If this has not occurred, certainly by two hours, then veterinary help should be urgently obtained. This period is one where proper help can make a real difference. The veterinarian will assess the situation and often some simple nursing care, supportive drug therapy milk administration, and possibly fluids, will "kickstart" the foal and all will be well. More serious are neonatal problems such as prematurity, dummy foals, septic foals, and foals with contractures. This is where the owner has to make some serious decisions. Certainly referral to one of the intensive care foal units that are available can often turn the process around and it never ceases to amaze me how some seriously compromised foals can be turned around, but the owner must be fully aware that the prognosis is very often guarded, the process can be extremely expensive, and many heartaches can occur along the way. The attending veterinarian will assess the situation, advise the owner of the possibilities and contact a referral centre. Probably the single most important event to occur after the foal is drinking is for it to pass it's first manure or meconium. If this does not occur, or the foal starts straining a lot, or even develops colic, then help again must be sought on an urgent basis. Next issue, I will discuss problems that may occur with the mare and foal during the first weeks of life.

cells could be formed. There is no doubt that even the slightest deficiency of these types of minerals can cause a defect in the structure and the function of the cell that is created. Of utmost importance is the form of the salt in which the mineral is delivered to the animal. As the saying goes,"oils aint oils", meaning that not all calciums are the same, not all irons are the same, etc. Different salts of one particular mineral can have significantly different effects both in terms of absorption/ utilization of the actual mineral, and also in terms of a specific therapeutic action. Let's take calcium as an example, it being the mineral needed in the largest quantities in animals. We note that calcium does not occur naturally as the metal calcium, but occurs in nature as various salts. The main natural-occurring calcium salts are calcium carbonate, the most common form, (chalk, limestone, marble, and dolomite); calcium sulphate (gypsum); calcium fluoride (fluorspar); and calcium phosphate (complexed as apatite and organic bonemeal). Calcium carbonate is the cheapest but is poorly absorbed in many cases, compared to calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite complex), which is well absorbed and utilized, perhaps because its animal source gives it

the inherent balance most suited to animal absorption. Calcium fluoride, on the other hand is toxic in large quantities and therefore is not suitable as a source of calcium. However, it has important therapeutic value when used as a trace element. This natural form of fluoride not only is useful in arthritis and 'splints', helping break up exostoses and indurated glands, but also strengthens prolapsed muscle and veins, helping to re-establish elasticity. Calcium sulphate, also is not well tolerated or absorbed as a bulk source of calcium. But, it also has therapeutic value in small-dispersed doses, particularly helpful in suppurative conditions such as chronic thick, yellow and lumpy mucus discharges, recurrent abscesses and poor healing after injury. Several laboratory prepared salts of calcium are also in wide use and some of these also show good absorption compared to calcium carbonate. Most useful of these are the chelated calcium's, combined to amino acids and other organic nutrients such as calcium orotate and calcium gluconate. However, these do not provide the inherent needed phosphate balance found in the organic calcium phosphate complex. Â&#x2030; contiued page 17

Mineral tissue salts (Colloids) form part of the group of nutrients that constitute natural therapy along with, herbs extracts, amino acids, trace elements and vitamins. Most horse owners, when they think of mineral salt supplements for horses, naturally enough, they think in terms mainly of electrolytes, of calcium, and of iron. But I want to broaden the horse owner's view about mineral and trace element use and needs both from the point of view of unrecognised therapeutic action, and from the importance of effective absorption and utilization. Some salts have a much wider action and use in the human and animal body than is generally recognized by most veterinary and medical authorities. Knowledge of these wider uses means that these minerals can be used more selectively in the case of a particular need or particular symptoms. Much of the known yet overlooked therapeutic information regarding common natural mineral salts... such as silica, calcium fluoride, calcium sulphate, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, iron phosphate, calcium phosphate, potassium phosphate, potassium chloride, magnesium phosphate, and zinc sulphate, comes from discoveries made in the 1800's by German doctors, particularly by Dr. W. H.Schuessler in 1873. He obtained his data from homoeopathic clinical trials or 'provings' involving thousands of human volunteers, mostly university students, who imbibed both large and small doses of a variety of triturated (finely ground) mineral salts to establish optimal therapeutic effect. It was found that the above minerals in small doses, often in combination with others, have repeatable therapeutic effects beyond the standard, widely known uses of these simple mineral salts. These were found to be particularly helpful in individuals with suboptimal nutrition, meaning individuals who were not getting enough minerals from their diet. These minerals represent the core of the socalled '12 Tissue Salts', originally described and utilized by Dr. Schuessler. This so-called 'tissue salt' therapy is the basis for the Blackmores range of CelloidsÂŽ, so widely used by naturopaths with success both in Australia and overseas in the last 55 years. Products containing cell salts are the employees, so to speak, which decide what type of organic molecules are formed with calcium, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen and according to the type of organic molecules produced so will particular types of living cells be created, and in the case of the equines body these types of cells or form particular types of tissues. If there was no iron ore calcium or phosphorus then there would be no blood cells formed. And if there were no potassium iron ore sodium or calcium phosphates then known nought nerve

Mineral absorption a problem for some horses Â&#x2030; from page 16 Another interesting example is Sodium and 3 of its salts. Generally there are no problems with the absorption of any sodium salts. All sodium salts are involved in fluid balance. Sodium chloride, common salt, is essential to maintain normal osmotic fluid pressure both within and outside of cells, as well as facilitating normal nerve conduction. Sodium sulphate (Glauber's salts) when given in small doses of the order of 5-10 gram per day for horses has a diuretic action, shifting excess fluid from the tissues and bloodstream, stimulating both kidney action and bile production. Excessive doses however, only act as a bowel purgative, as do excessive doses of Epsoms salts. Sodium phosphate has different properties again. It is useful also in similar small doses, but more than other sodium salts, aids the breakdown of excess tissue lactic acid and promotes water absorption. Also it is effective in reducing gastric acidity. The next example, Iron, presents a common absorption problem for many horses. A wide variety of laboratory-prepared iron salts are on the market, and these have varying success with individual animals. It is usually the cases that the horses which are in the greatest need of iron supplementation are those which absorb it poorly and are often intolerant of iron supplements. Consequently, the cheapest, Ferrous sulphate, is not recommended, it being quite toxic to the liver when absorbed. It inhibits

protein digestion, is mostly unabsorbed, and irritates the gastrointestinal mucosa even in small doses. Other commonly used salts are ferrous gluconate, ferric citrate, ferrous fumarate and other iron amino acid chelates. The amino acid chelate forms appear to be the least toxic and are fairly well absorbed. However the form of iron chosen by Hi Form is Iron phosphate which is a complex and consists of a complexed mixture of mainly ferrous phosphate, with ferric phosphate and ferrous oxide.

This Iron phosphate complex is well absorbed and tolerated. It is not only useful in iron-deficiency anaemia, but also has a clear anti-inflammatory action, reduces fever and local hyperaemia when given in small, frequently repeated doses. I always recommend the use of mineral salts instead of simple minerals which are poorly absorbed. Check the details before bringing horses into NSW THE NSW Department of Primary Industries has issued a reminder for owners of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and asses about movement requirements when bringing animals into the state. The reminder comes in three parts, moving horses form Queensland, from Western Australia and the Northern Territory and also within NSW. From Queensland Horses coming from the Cattle Tick Infected Zone in Queensland may be infected with cattle tick. NSW quarantines any infected stock and eradicates cattle tick when found. These horses must be inspected and treated for cattle tick before entering NSW. Contact the border treatment facility at Tweed Heads (Kirra) on 07 5536 4714 to make an appointment for inspection and/or treatment at either the Kirra or Mt Lindsay border crossings - 24 hours notice must be given. Paperwork for horses treated within Queensland for transport into NSW or exempt racehorses and harness racers must be faxed to 07 5536 1290. There are cameras monitoring the border between Queensland and NSW. Suspected illegal movements of horses will be investigated. From Northern Territory and Western Australia Horses coming from the cattle tick infected areas in Western Australia or Northern Territory may be infected with cattle tick. Plenty to consider with float towing combinations There’s little doubt that floating horses is becoming easier both in terms of finding a suitable float and also the correct vehicle to tow it. The trick is to find the right combination of both which will suit your needs. There are some simple questions to research when it comes to car and float combinations. Two of the most basic questions are: How much will the float weigh both unloaded and loaded? How much will the vehicle be legally able to tow? These two questions refer to what is the towing limit on a vehicle and what is the TARE weight (the weight of the float) with no horses in it. These are two areas of concern as some floats either don’t have the TARE weight on the drawbar or manufacturers fabricate some of these numbers to lower the weight to make it more attractive to prospective buyers. Some other areas to pay attention to are: What is the ball weight of your vehicle? This is the amount of downward pressure your vehicle can handle from your float. This is usually listed on a small silver plate on the tow bar itself of in your owner’s manual of the vehicle. What is the GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) of your float? This figure is the maximum carrying capacity, including the weight of the actual float. So if the GVM is 2 tonne and your float weights 1.7 tonne, you are only legally allowed to carry 300kgs of gear and horse. Any good salesperson will give you the correct advice in the above four areas, however be careful of people wanting your money over your safety. All of this information can be found online so you can narrow down what float and what car will fit into your towing set up. When looking for a tow vehicle, the ‘new generation’ of diesel utes and dual cabs are providing plenty of power and plenty of added extras and being diesels, they offer reliability and economy. However while such vehicles are a great option, the weight of a float when fully loaded will dictate just how safe this option will be. The towing capacity of some of these utes is three tonne which

caters for many people who have heavy loads. These vehicles only weigh a little over one tonne (especially utes) and the suspension and brakes are not the best they can be with most of them still choosing to use rear drum brakes instead of disc brakes. With the old leaf spring suspension in the rear it will not be long before your ute will be sitting down in the back chasing possums with your headlights pointing up into the trees. If this is happening to you a set of air springs should be fitted to the rear of the vehicle. This is a manual version of air suspension which you pump up with a tyre gauge and will set you back around the $500 mark fully installed in your car. As for the rear drum brakes, there aren't a lot of options here in upgrading the drums but you can fit a set of performance ‘drilled and slotted’ front disc rotors to the front of the vehicle. With more than 60% of your braking coming from the front discs it would be wise to fit some good quality discs and pads to your car. If you are pulling your three tonne float with your 1.3 tonne ute, your float can dictate the state of play very quickly. An option would be to install a good electric brake controller, being aware that on with this controller you have the ability to brake the horse float on its own. If you are coming down a steep hill with a heavy float on there is usually a slide or a button on your controller which activates the trailer brakes only. This is a good effective way of taking off speed in a emergency and it also lets you keep a heavy float under control instead of being on and off the brakes of your car. Keep in mind that towing a float is more stressful than normal driving and very likely to cause tiredness. Plan your long trips to allow for stops to give yourself a break about every hour or so. Take water for yourself to drink, even for fairly short journeys, as dehydration will affect your reaction times and ability to think clearly. Remember to allow for the extra length and width of your horse float and keep in mind that they have a tendency to cut in on corners and curves.

Natural Horsemanship Certificate Program The Australian Natural Horsemanship Study Centre, run by Ken Faulkner and Kathy Stewart is continually being developed for people wishing to create a unique bond with their horses. Ken has been involved with horses in one form or another from a very early age and began starting horses at 15. He has been involved in various aspects of horsemanship, ranging from rodeo, breeding, training and showing horses for the past 28 years. Ken conducts courses and starts horses sharing his insights, knowledge and experience throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and more recently Japan. His knowledge and information will help people and horses to build a level of communication that will enable them to move forward together as a partnership, understand the intricacies of finesse riding and high level liberty. Kathy has been involved with horses for more than 30 years. Several years ago, Kathy became an instructor with Ken Faulkner and Australia Natural Horsemanship and, with Ken, founded the Australian Natural Horsemanship Study Centre where students from throughout Australia and overseas come to study Natural Horsemanship. Students can study at the centre for a couple of days or a couple of weeks, choosing from

the list of courses which suit their own horsemanship goals. The focus of the centre is to teach students Natural Horsemanship in such a way that they can incorporate it into any horsemanship discipline or program they choose, whether it be English or Western, endurance or trail riding, competition or just for fun. The Australian Natural Horsemanship Certificate Program has been designed as a step by step approach to help students with the training and education of their horse using natural methods.

Whether your interest be Western or English, cow horse or breeding, this Certificate Program will provide you and your horse with an excellent base from which to begin either your competition or simply a safer and more joyful experience together. The Centre offers a four stage Certificate Course in Natural Horsemanship which assists students in take a balanced approach to their learning. The program consists four stages from Certificate One through to Certificate Four and completion of each stage will lead in a natural progression to the next certificate. The aim being to complete all of the tasks with your horse remaining soft, flexible and relaxed throughout. Each certificate consists of a Ground Skills Section and a Riding Skills Section. Completed correctly the Ground Skills section will ensure the easiest and safest path to completing the Riding Skills section of each Certificate. Students may choose to be assessed by an instructor and will be issued a certificate upon completion of each stage, or they may choose just to use the program as a personal training tool to check the progress of their partnership with their horse.. Can you hear them ? Sure you can - you know, when you are working with your horse , that little voice in your head that says things like; I’m not good at this. I give up This is too hard I can't make this any better He’s not getting it I keep making mistakes I just don't get it I can’t, I’m just confusing him I’ll never be able to do this. You know who I'm talking about now right ? Let me tell you a little secret about that voice. We all hear it. Its a pretty common 'human condition'. Let me tell you something else about that voice - the more you listen, the more it talks! And the more it talks the more those words become a reality! Those words can get so real, and so true that they can change you. I feel like writing each of these sentences on a

new line because they are so important. Your words can change you. Negative Nancy and Downer Dave can take over your life. Guess what happens when you add a horse into the mix ? You have something to blame! He scares me. He hurt me. He ignores me. He is stupid. He is doing it to annoy me. Soon enough you have become a heat seeking missile for - the crap! All you notice is the 'bad' stuff - so what do you see? All the 'bad' stuff! You may spend an hour with your horse, and during that time he was his normal self - but for five minutes he was distracted and scatty. So what do you do? You go home and say to your partner "that horse was an idiot today". And that’s where it sits in your mind/ You've forgotten about the 55 minutes of good that happened - your focus is on the five minutes of undesirable behaviour.

Equine Lifestyle Festival showcases new events The EQUITANA Australia team and the New Zealand Farmlands Horse of The Year Show organisers are delighted to launch a new concept event, the Equine Lifestyle Festival, at Hawkesbury Showgrounds, NSW from November 13-15. Offering the advantage of one of the most versatile facilities in the country, the program will encompass one of the most diverse competition programs that Australia has to experience. With new concept equine sports, entertainment, education and shopping this open air extravaganza will offer a showcase of country living, lifestyle, agriculture and horses. The festival will feature dressage, campdrafting, showjumping, polo, horseball, mounted games, miniature horse sports, Arabian and heavy horse classes and the new sport of ranch sorting that requires that a team of two riders moving a heard of 11 cattle in numerical order from one round pen to a separate adjoining pen in 60 seconds or

less. The judge raises a flag signalling the riders to enter the round pen. As the riders cross the gap between the two pens the clock starts and the round begins. The riders then have to move the cattle one by one in numerical order starting with a random number called by the judge as quickly as possible. There will dog competitions including a dogs long jump into a pool - dock dogs. There will be an extensive trade display area featuring horse and lifestyle, horse transport and farm machinery, regional food and wine and a special section for dogs and their owners. There will be displays and exhibitions, kids activities, dog demonstrations and live music. Organisers are also seeking volunteers, for positions available in both front and back of house, competition, administration roles and loads more. THAT TALKS Did you know that horses talk? You only need to listen to the signs they show you to understand what they’re saying. They could talk to you by hanging the tongue out, getting the tongue over the bit or rolling the tongue back. These are all signs of bit pain and are their way of telling you. Those aren’t the only signs: many may chew, grind, grab or chomp on the bit because they are trying to hold the bit pressure off their tongue. Some will lean on the rein, hang on one rein bad, pull the reins through your hands, head toss, run through the bit, or bolt, while others will rear and buck to get rid of the pain or the rider at the end of the reins. Horses will open their mouth to give them more room, enabling them to roll their tongue back or hang it out to escape the bit pain. Others will rub their face on their leg or the rider at the end of the ride - this is them saying “Please get the bit out of my mouth! It has hurt me!” There is extensive research behind the Winning Tongue Plate Bit, and combined with input from leading trainers and riders the design of the bits has helped to overcome these problems. These riders have stated it’s like having power steering and the difference the WTP bit makes is comparable to wearing comfortable slippers all day instead of high heels.

TVEG POWER OF PINK Tweed Valley Equestrian Group is holding a Breast Cancer Fundraiser this year, “The Power of Pink Dressage and Show jumping Spectacular” on the 10th & 11th of October at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. The event now in its sixth year was awarded “Community Event of the Year” by Tweed Shire Council in 2011. So far the TVEG has raised more than $17,000 dollars for Breast Cancer Research. There were over 125 entries with riders coming from Port Macquarie to Brisbane entering last year’s event. There are prizes to the winners in all divisions but also fun prizes for the Pinkest Horse, Pinkest Rider and “Pretty in Pink” best dressed horse and rider in pink. All riders had a fantastic day with smiles everywhere. There was also a large division of junior riders (all girls) and it is hoped that from a young age we can help them understand the importance of being aware of this disease that affects so many women. Dressage is often a very serious sport, so to see every rider with a splash of pink or more somewhere was fantastic. Breast Cancer will touch so many lives, family and friends and as dressage being mainly dominated by women, this event is a perfect way to raise awareness and a fun way to raise money for such a worthy cause. Sponsorship to the event gives exposure via the event program, website, Facebook, club newsletter, media releases and announcing over the PA on the day. MULLUMBIMBY SHOW 2015 The 2015 Mullumbimby show will be held on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November. This year the show will be bigger and better than ever before with the inclusion of more than 20 new classes to the horse schedule. The new revamped program will include classes for two-year-olds and under exhibits across all breeds plus an award for the overall Best Youngstock Exhibit of the show. A fancy dress competition with ribbons and prizes to third place plus a $100 voucher from Equissage for the first place winner. Best Novice Exhibit of Show sponsored by Chevalin Lodge and, thanks to generous sponsorship from Equissage a Hi Point award for the best Western Horse and Hi Point Heavy Horse Exhibit have also been included and will receive $100 voucher from Equissage and sash. Ring events include Ponies Galloways Hacks and Show hunters in three rings, led and ridden breed classes. Dalby gears up for Stock Horse sale

The 41st anniversary Dalby Stock Horse Sale will be held at the Dalby Showgrounds Complex from Friday, December 4 through to Sunday, December 6. Action for the weekend kicks off on Friday, December 4, with the Sale Incentive and Open Draft. Live music and great food will be available all day and night. Open and Incentive Draft programs will be uploaded on line from the beginning of October. On Saturday, December 5, the sale weekend commences early in the morning with Society Inspections of Sale Horses then commencement of the parade and cattle working demonstrations in lot order. Cattle have been generously provided by The Grove Shorthorns Condamine. Pre-work footage for each lot will be uploaded to our website immediately following each lot. FIG TREE POCKET ARENA GETS OLYMPIC SIZED TICK OF APPROVAL Athens Olympic Eventer, Rebel Morrow, has been the first rider to test out the newly surfaced sand arena at Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club. Morrow joined with Brisbane City Councillor and member for Walter Taylor Ward Julian Simmonds to officially open the arena on Saturday September 5. The 120m by 80m arena was resurfaced thanks to a $100,000 Brisbane City Council Community Sports Club Grant. A double-layered base was laid, before the arena was laser-levelled, and a top layer of river sand was applied, offering an international quality surface for a range of equestrian disciplines. Cr Simmonds said the work is one of a number of Community Sports Grants being offered by council. "The Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club is a wonderful local asset and Council is delighted to provide support for a club that is keeping hundreds of local residents active and healthy," Cr Simmonds said. "It is such a unique venue, with the cross country course set along the picturesque Brisbane River, and is approximately 12km from the City Centre, which is fantastic for competitors and spectators alike.
