Four ways to overcome fear and doubt By JANE FAULKNER Director, Equine Assisted Therapy Australia We can all be crippled by fear and doubt at some stage of our lives. It often occurs when something happens and we feel we have no control over it. When we have no control over something, it sets off a whole chain of reactions within us. We often revert back to ways of coping that worked when we were young. This may include sulking, having angry outbursts, disengaging from others, getting overdramatic and just not seeing the situation clearly. These old ways of dealing with the problem are often outdated and leave us feeling more helpless, disempowered and stuck. So what to do? 1. Breathe and come back to the felt experience of your body, take four slow deep breaths and feel your feet on the ground, move your body- stretch or go for a walk and bring your awareness to the present moment. Notice what is around you; notice the chair you are sitting on, the colour of the walls - get present. This calms the body and helps you see the situation without the drama, it brings simplicity and clarity. 2. See the situation clearly. When we feel out of control or uptight about a situation, we are often operating from a survival instinct. We are looking for the negative in any situation and we are bringing all of our history with us. This actually clouds the situation-

so be present and really check it out. Break the situation down and even ask questions of others to help you to get clear and to rule things out. 3. Get clear on what you do know about the situation, gather real facts and your role within it. Get clear on whether you do have any power to change the situation or not. Focus on strategies and solutions - what needs to change, what am I afraid of, what is working, what do I need to let go of. Check all of these things, get strategic and simplify. 4. Name it to tame it - name the feeling to tame the feeling. Ask for support and acknowledge how you are feeling. This is vital, when we are aware of how we are feeling and the affect a situation is having on us. We are then able to act to change the situa-
tion. For many of us we don't become aware of how we feel. We know we are stressed and uptight but we don't know why- we just soldier on. This then compounds the problem as we start to ignore, suppress and run away from our feelings and then they start to take over. We might start to have panic attacks or overreact to things, we lose touch with ourselves, our needs and our clarity. So, start to get curious about how you're feeling since these feelings act as a compass guiding you through life - feelings provide information. Be gentle and kind with yourself and commit to getting to know yourself through being present and checking out how you feel. www.equineassistedtherapyaustralia.com.au

Arena cost cutting can prove to be expensive BY TODD CUNNINGHAM Equestrian Land Developments Pty Ltd More often than not arena rebuilds are required as a result of poorly designed and constructed bases or from the use of unsuitable materials all in the effort to cut costs. Outlined are a few points to consider when designing and constructing your arena. Correct and quality earthworks are key. Getting your sister’s best friend’s uncle who owns a Drott up the road to do the work for a carton of beer, isn't always the ideal way to start out your construction. This is the stage where the site is chosen, drainage is planned and designed and will determine how your arena will work on completion. Full survey is paramount - getting the falls right and the exact measurements you require is key. More often than not, ELD arrive onsite for a consultation where the earthworks are already done and the customer is adamant the measurements are 20m x 60m - when measured correctly these are often not even close. Depending on the cut required for the job you will need to take into consideration the batters and drainage outside of the arena, so cutting a neat 20m x 60m rectangle is only the beginning. Use only quality assured materials for your arena construction. Cutting costs at this stage of the build will only result in failure down the track.
The use of quality materials and earthworks are the key to a good surface
Never continue construction during or after wet weather as this will guarantee failure of the sub-structure in the future. Compaction is vital - any tracks left in the base layers now will result in an uneven riding surface later. The European concept of the use of drainage systems underneath rarely works in our Australian climate. We tend to get heavy downpours rather than light misting rain events. These designs do not cope with this kind of extremes in weather. The ELD design which has been successfully used since it's design and inception by myself in 2000, consists of two base layers. The first layer supplies the solid foundation for the build, while the second layer (or Blinding Layer) is a 'protective' layer to stop
the rock in the base layer rolling through the surface. This is often another reason arenas require rebuilding - rock appearing through the surface and causing stone bruises and other lameness issues in horses. The second layer can also be altered to suit the discipline the arena will be used for. Should the arena be used for Western events, such as reining, where a good slide distance is paramount, a treatment may be applied to the materials to ensure this layer is going to stand up to constant wear and tear of an extreme nature. Dressage will require a slightly different treatment to Show Jumping as the requirements in the training and performance differ. Control erosion and ground stabilisation When ever you have areas where livestock congregate, you will have soil and pasture erosion and in wet weather, mud and lots of it. In high traffic areas, hooves loosen topsoil and compact the soil below. The soil compaction increases until eventually the rainwater, unable to penetrate and filter down through the soil, collects and pools on top, mixing with the topsoil and any organics. This usually is mostly manure but it can also include hay and shavings. This blend of ingredients - water, soil and manure - is a recipe for mud. Muddy footing in horse turnout areas not only increases the difficulty of daily barn chores and grooming routines for owners but creates a living environment for your horse that is neither safe nor healthy. As well as providing an ideal breeding ground for insects, bacteria and fungi that can cause abscesses, scratches, rain scald, mud fever, greasy heel and thrush, muddy footing in horse paddocks can also lead to lost horseshoes, soft hooves and injuries caused by slipping and sliding on the wet and muddy footing. Additionally, feeding your horse on a muddy surface can result in ingestion of dirt or sand particles that could cause colic. Muddy paddocks can also have a negative environmental impact. Water runoff containing soil and traces of

supplier of the hays or high roughage feeds. “If the roughage intake reaches the required energy levels than these performance horses should theoretically do exceptionally well. The performance level should be maintained and the condition of the horse also.” Researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences found that a forage-only diet is associated with lower levels of lactic acid, meaning the horses physically cope with the training regimen better than they would on a mixed diet with concentrates. So, can horses at high performance levels be maintained just from a high roughage diet? Naturally the amount of roughage being provided will depend on the workload of the horse and the nutrient analysis. A high roughage diet for perfor-
mance horses can also be supplemented with feeds such as alfalfa hay pellets. Alfalfa is a great feed for horses as it has an excellent nutrient analysis which includes an appropriate level of calcium and protein but is also quite low in NSC and starch so is quite beneficial to be fed. Maintaining an energy intake for performance horses is essential this can be achieved by feeding a diet that is quite simple with the addition of the occasional grain if necessary and oil. It is quite possible to reach the required energy levels, protein levels and fat content required to support the horse at this performance level. It is important and essential to make sure that these types of horses are receiving the correct nutrient intake every day. The inclusion of a well-balanced

Performance horses such as racehorses, high-level dressage horses, showjumpers and eventers require an elevated level of energy to perform their work. And we are all aware that a high level of horse feeds contains energy dense concentrates. Unfortunately, it has been proven over many years that these types of feeds have a negative impact on the stomach of the horse. These types of feeds can contribute to gastric ulcers and tend to lack roughage that can in the long-term restrict the horses gut health functioning normally. Roughage also encourages the normal chewing process and assists in stimulating the enzymatic action at the point of the mouth. Nutrition provides the basic building blocks on which our horses are built. How we feed our horses can affect reproduction, development in utero, the young foal, the developing athlete, competition horses and finally older horses Prevention is certainly better than cure! In a world where everything is perfect even Thoroughbred racehorses could thrive on roughage alone. However, is it possible that roughage within the diet could support their elevated level of training? Recent Swedish research says this is possible and can also be extremely beneficial for the horse. During these studies, the most important aspect was to ensure that the hays and grass being fed contained a high level of energy. These are the comments made by Sara Ringmark, PhD, of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry, in Uppsala. “It seems that this study has proven that a high energy content can be achieved by a roughage only diet. “A high energy diet is essential for high performance horses and it may be worthwhile to have a regular nutritional analysis of the roughage you are feeding or request this information from the
supplement is ideal. A supplement should basically play a support role to a high roughage diet and should allow an adjustment to reach the correct nutritional intake that is required for ever horse. It seems that a high roughage diet does not prohibit muscle glycogen storage nor does it affect growth or the body condition of the horse. On the contrary, a high roughage diet can promote a high health status. It may be of advantage to feed hays that have been cut early as the nutritional content is much higher. Feeding high performance horses, a high level of roughage does not seem to fit the current mould of feeding traditions, however the horse has evolved to eat this type of diet and as I have mentioned on many occasions the anatomy and physiology of the horse has not changed. Many of the standard processed feeds do not provide a normal source of roughage and some processed feeds are also quite high in starch so replacing these types of feeds with a roughage diet based on hays could be of enormous benefit. We already know that there has been an increase in digestive health conditions in horse's due to the diverse types of feeding substances being fed. A high roughage diet may prevent the risk of these digestive health issues which also include ulcers. Remember feeding a high roughage diet is not new news, it may just be the perfect health solution for most horses. There are already some feeds in the market that have a genuine high roughage component. How often does your horse need the dentist? By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP The usual recommendation for dental care for most horses ranges between 6-12 months. But as we all know, no one horse is the same and they tend to take great pleasure in reminding us of this. So what factors contribute to the time period your dentist recommends? Age is the most common factor that people rely on when deciding when to get their horse’s teeth done but there are other factors that can affect your horse’s mouth. I can summarise them into three main categories: Genetics/breeding, past dental care, and lifestyle. I have written many articles on young and old horses’ dental needs so here’s a brief summary. Young horses (six years and under) erupt teeth more quickly and have many changes happening inside the mouth, including the shedding of caps and the eruption of permanent teeth. This period of time can result in many problems and it is the reason that a dentist will want to examine your young horse every six months. Above the age of six, it is the general rule that your horse should be seen every 12 months. This, as will be discussed now, isn’t a hard and fast rule and many factors can affect this time frame. The breed of your horse has a great deal to do with how often they will require the dentist. Again, there are exceptions to these guidelines, but as a general rule some breeds require more dental maintenance than others. Thoroughbreds, Miniatures and Shetlands and Egyptian Arabians are the breeds that
spring to mind that unfortunately don’t have the best dental luck. Due to overbreeding and indiscriminate breeding of horses with poor teeth, these breeds especially can have problems that need to be seen more regularly by a qualified dentist. Miniatures, Shetlands and Arabians suffer greatly from overcrowding in their small heads. They have the same number of teeth, squeezed into a significantly smaller head size. Regular maintenance means this doesn’t have to affect these breeds adversely, but it does mean that if you are the proud owner of these lovely horses, you should be aware that a missed dental appointment could equal disaster. Thoroughbreds, unfortunately, tend to have the most molar malocclusions of any other breed I see. Thoroughbreds are bred for speed, not exactly for longevity. This means problems such as wavemouths and overbites are passed down from parents to foal and appear very regularly in the thoroughbreds I treat. These problems can definitely be addressed, however, as with the above breeds, mean that a missed appointment could be very damaging if these conditions get a good hold inside your thoroughbred’s mouth. On the other hand, some breeds are more orally blessed.

Regular dental maintenance by a qualified equine dental practitioner throughout your horse's life is very important . Quarterhorses, Clydesdales and Cob breeds don’t tend to exhibit the same regularity of problems. This doesn’t mean they don’t require dental work- they will still get sharp and if they have a tendency towards a malocclusion, this can still get out of control by letting your horse go overdue for the dentist. Like every other aspect of horse health, when breeding, teeth should be taken into account, as they can have detrimental consequences throughout the lifetime of the foal. Past dental care obviously has a very large impact on the state of your horse’s mouth. Ideally we’d all buy horses that were seen regularly when due throughout their life. This, sadly, isn’t the case - many horses I see will require more regular dental care to correct any problems that have been left too long. Another problem when seeing an overdue horse with little to no dental history is that your dentist won’t have sufficient information on how quickly your horse will get sharp. When I see a horse that has no dental history available, I tend to err on the side of caution and recommend that they get checked earlier rather than later, just in case your horse is one of the unlucky ones that gets sharp very quickly. Similarly, the sensitivity of each horse differs and sharpness that may significantly bother one horse may be nothing more than an irritant to another. If the horse isn’t due when I have estimated, it is just a matter of checking and making a future
booking once I have an idea of how quickly they will be due. Lifestyle can impact how your horse wears his or her teeth. Horses on a natural diet of a lot of roughage, paddocked and grazing for majority of the day, will have a better chance of maintaining their own sharpness for longer. Horses that are stabled and grain-fed tend to get sharper more quickly as they don’t use their teeth as thoroughly. Hence why racing or ex-racing thoroughbreds can often exhibit more problems than other breeds. A qualified dentist will be considering all of these factors as they assess your horse and should explain the reasoning behind their conclusion. If your dentist recommends a time period, it is based on their experience in the field as well as extensive study in the area. The time frames can change as the problems in your horse’s mouth are addressed and your dentist should explain this to you as well. As your horse ages, the rate of eruption of their teeth (and therefore how quickly they get sharp) slows and your dentist will take this into account after every appointment also. Some horses will need the dentist less regularly and some can put up with an incredible amount of pain before showing any symptoms, but to ensure your horse is able to eat, work and live happily and healthily, heeding your dentists advice is the best course of action. Aussie shares win in gruelling horse race The Mongol Derby is a 1000km ride on semi-wild horses which runs across the Mongolian countryside and is featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longest and toughest horse race. The 2017 event started on August 9 and was contested by 12 men and 22 women, from nine countries. The race recreates Chinggis Khaanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ancient horse messenger system in epic fashion. The hardy and semi-wild native horses of Mongolia reprise their traditional role as the legs and lungs of the adventure and the horse stations, or morin urtuus, are manned by nomadic herding families as they traditionally were. The 2017 Mongol Derby, has been jointly won by 29 year-old Ed Fernon, an Olympic pentathlete from Sydney, Australia and 51 year-old Barry Armitage, a former professional sailor turned adventurer, from South Africa, first past the post in 2012 (but thwarted by a vet penalty). Fernon and Armitage crossed the finish line together in 'stinking hot conditions' after they covered the 1000kms in seven days riding 12 hours a day and in some of the worst conditions the race has ever seen. On arrival at the finish line, both headed straight into the lake to cool off. In third place, just a few hours behind

When evaluating a lame horse, a priority should be to determine where exactly where the horse is lame and then try to determine the cause of the lameness.

to gather more information as to what the problem may be. Radiography, or "x-rays", is the most common and useful diagnostic technique available and almost every case of lameness will be radiographed. Owners often ask for x-rays, without any proper examination but this is not the correct approach as simply finding some change on x-ray, does not necessarily mean that this is what is causing the lameness. Obviously a fresh fracture is hard to refute but in most of the lameness cases we are discussing, the problem is chronic and has been there for some time. There is a never ending plethora of x-ray changes possible but most would fit into either the "Degenerative" type where bone is lost or resorbed, or the "Proliferative" type where new bone is produced. These changes do not occur overnight, they usually take months and years to progress and become visible on x-ray and they are the result of long term trauma, inflammation, or degeneration. Finding these changes certainly confirm that damage has been occurring in that area but sometimes they are old and settled and possible not causing any problem. Interpretation of these changes has to be correlated with the signs and symptoms presented by the horse. Osteochondrosis is also a common radiographic finding, usually in joints. These can be in the form of cysts or bone fragments. They are developmental and have usually been there since birth and so again, simply find-

Lameness is always a very serious problem and particularly if the horse has had issues for some time, self cure is probably not a strong likelihood. The primary concept to understand is that lameness is a result of some underlying cause. Lameness can be masked sometimes with drugs but if the primary cause is still present, there is no possible chance of cure. What our aim, when evaluating a lame horse, is to first of all determine exactly where the horse is lame and then to investigate possible mechanisms that could be making the horse lame. In pleasure horses, by far the greatest source of lameness comes from the foot. Sometimes owners can have difficulty accepting this as the feet more often than not look perfectly normal. So our first job is to prove conclusively that in fact the problem we are dealing with is in the foot. This is done by the use of regional nerve blocks. There are many different types and sites for blocks and the process can be

This particularly applies to the foot and the relationship of the pastern and pedal bones to the soft tissue and hoof capsule is extremely important, particularly when trying to determine what the underlying cause of the lameness may be. Absence of x-ray changes is also common. This means either that the lameness has only been there for a short time and there has not been enough time for radiographic changes to develop, (incredibly even some major fractures may be very difficult to see initially if there is no displacement as it can take some days for the "fissure or stress" fracture to widen), or, that the primary problem is soft tissue rather than bone. This is a very common finding in the foot as a very large proportion of hoof lameness involves soft tissue such as the deep flexor tendon or any of the very large number of ligaments present. Ultrasound is an excellent modality for diagnosing soft tissue and skilled clinicians can get some great insight into the structures and damage, but changes often are not great and interpretation can be very difficult. Obviously ultrasound is extremely valuable for the flexor tendons and suspensory ligaments in the cannon bone and allows an evaluation of the amount of damage present. Continued page 21

Other diagnostic modalities such as scintigraphy, CT scans, and MRI scans are rapidly developing and becoming more and more available. All are extremely useful and any extra information and preciseness of exactly what the problem is always valuable, but once a problem has been pinpointed by nerve blocks so that we know exactly where the horse is lame, and we assess radiographic and possibly ultrasound findings, the extra information may not really have that much bearing on how we go about treating and managing the lameness. The most important thing to understand is that there are really only three causes of lameness - Infection, trauma, and degenerative changes. Infection can usually be diagnosed clinically and corrective steps taken, (for example hoof abscess), trauma lameness is usually very acute, has some suggestive history, and most often there are obvious signs of damage to the horse (for example kicks). Making an impact at Cowboy Dressage World Gathering Supplied by TANJA KRAUS For the past three years, Tanja Kraus and Phil Monaghan have travelled to the Cowboy Dressage World Gathering in Rancho Murieta, California, to compete in the Cowboy Dressage World Gathering and the Top Hand event. This year was no different and Tanja and Phil enjoyed five days of competition on their borrowed horses - Triscuit and Smoky. They have returned back to Australia with many placings but most notably is their shared sixth place in the Top Hand event. Out of all the riders in Top Hand, the Aussies tied With only a few percent difference between the winning score and the top eight, they were proud of their achievement amongst strong competitors. At the Gathering this year, there was a strong Australian contingent, with six Aussies at the event. Tanja Kraus was competing while Phil Monaghan not only competing but also presenting at the educational evening. Ken and Kathy Faulkner attended with Ken demonstrating young horse handling and competing and Kathy judging. Mandy and Steve Probyn were in action with Mandy completing her

requirements to become a Cowboy Dressage judge and Steve the official Aussie photographer and support crew. Tanja said it was fantastic to see so many Aussies make the trip to finals to support Cowboy Dressage World. Cowboy Dressage is growing rapidly around the world and in Australia with a number of gatherings (competitions) planned around the country. New clinicians and judges are becoming recognized by the Cowboy Dressage World Professionals association. Dressage potential on show at championships The NSW Dressage Championships were held recently at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park. Mulawa Performance Horses where the sponsors of the prestigious CDI-W Grand Prix. The Farrell family, owners of Mulawa Performance Horses, are a great supporter of dressage and connected to the sport via their 21-year-old daughter, Katharine Farrell who rode the chestnut gelding Luxor 118. Mulawa head rider and Australian representative Brett Parbery won the class on Susan Duddy's black Weltmeyer gelding DP Weltmieser. Brett scored 68.80% in a typically super smooth test with only a moment in the second half of the trot zigzag where the horse cantered seemingly without reason. The piaffe throughout was very good and the one tempi changes so impressive. The little black horse had his game face on and really excelled in the second half of the test. There was agreement from all the judges in having him first other than at C where Peter Holler from Germany differed from his judging colleagues. Later Peter Holler said he was "so sweet" in the test and very correct. Weltmieser was Brett's first ride and in a field of 16 horses, there were four combinations that rode two horses. To ride two horses at this level is an extraordinary achievement indeed and those four riders including Brett Parbery, Rozzie Ryan, 18-year-old Mary Warren and Rio Olympian Sue Hearn. Second in the competition was Judy Dierks riding Diamond Star owned by Vicki Newham. The chestnut had a few mistakes along with highlights and ending up on a score of 68.740% less than half a percent behind Brett. Western Australian rider Deon Stokes was in third place (68.420%) on his black stallion Royal Oak II owned by Kate Barton. "He really stayed with me throughout so I'm stoked," Deon joked. Rozzie Ryan was next on 66.90% on Jive Magic gelding Jarrah R. Her piaffe and passage transitions were super and Rozzie would also have been very happy with her other ride Adonie who is very new to the level and has impressive trot work.

Such is the height in the trot work that she gets over enthusiastic in the piaffe and this will take a little more time to get together. Following three behind Rozzie was the combination of Robbie McKinnon and Razzamatazz. They cut an elegant picture and the extended trot work floats and the passage was so light over the ground. Rio Olympian Sue Hearn on Remington was in first place with the German judge Peter Holler on 66.040% but in sixth place overall. The Riverdance gelding has super piaffe but like her other ride Jude was a bit spooky at the C end of the arena. Perhaps Jude and Remington have been chatting at the stables but maybe it was the splash of sunlight in the corner that really upset the Jive gelding. Brett Parbery and Heath Ryan shared seventh place on 66.00%. Brett was riding the huge 18 hands plus Dutch gelding owned by himself and Helen Batson - PPH Zeppelin. Peter Holler really liked the horse and said in the early stages of his career shows great promise. Zeppelin shows - like Heath's
mount Utopian Cardinal - real talent in the piaffe and fantastic canter pirourettes. Just pipped out of the top 10 was Mary Warren. Aged just 18, Mary had two horses in the class - the black Regardez Moi stallion Mindarah Park Ramadan and his son Mindarah Park Raphael. This young woman sits with such maturity and control on her horses and both seem so willing to work for her. The younger Raphael produced a lovely test just showing he was a little green on the centreline but his father produced some great piaffe and a super extended walk. Sheridyn Ashwood riding Fererro Chocolate box has super passage and then the piaffe of Lesley Anne Taylor and Amicelli Gold truly excelled - on the spot and so expressive. Queenslander Tor Van den Berge rode his Londonderry Stallion Lauries As in a very kind test. Overall, a very impressive number of horses in this class showed there was a lot of newcomers to the level which holds promise of a developing future for riders at Grand Prix level.

Hawkesbury plays host to World Polo NSW to host World Polo Championship for the first time in Sydney’s picturesque Hawkesbury region. This month, the region is set to come alive with the sounds and scents of polo ponies and their riders when it plays host to the 11th World Polo Championship. Executive Director, Key Sites and Industry Assessments, Anthea Sargeant announced that the NSW Government had approved the Federation of International Polo (FIP) event under the Major Events Act 2009. Up to 60,000 people, including international media, top polo riders and spectators, are expected to flock to the prestigious tournament at the privately-owned Sydney Polo Club, in Richmond, from October 17 – 29. “It’s an exciting opportunity for Sydney and the Hawkesbury region as it’s the first time this major event will be held in NSW,” Ms Sargeant said. “As well as being a fun family day out for polo fans, the event will boost the local economy and continue to build the profile of NSW as a leading international sporting host state. “There will be 14 polo matches held over six competition days and 100 international-level competitors from eight nation-based teams competing for the world polo title. “In addition to the polo, there will be live music, arts and fashion shows, along with a
World Polo Championship will attract more than 100 international-level competitors to the Hawkesbury this month.

Endurance Championships decided by seconds After ten and a half hours of riding on diverse terrain, this year's Equestrian Australia Endurance Championships came down to the last two seconds with Akhmed Pshuno from Imbil taking out the national title ahead of fellow-local and current Queensland State Champion Kaylea Maher. Pshunov, riding Sangah The Messiah, completed the course at an average speed of approximately 15km per hour after setting off at 3am in the morning. It was a close race throughout with runner-up Kaylea Maher riding A'Landell Ali once again having to settle for second place after coming in only three seconds behind the winner in the 2016 Championships. Matthew Sample, owner of the hosting venue Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex, said the event was a great success and congratulated Mr Pshunov on the win. "Akhmed had a great ride and the competition was tight throughout,” he said. “It's always exciting when an endurance event comes down to the final seconds. "We are delighted to be hosting the national championships for the second year in a row and

What’s happening THE DAYBORO BIG OCTOBER RIDE It’s that time of year again and The Dayboro Trail Riding Club will be holding their 19th annual Big October Ride on Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22. This year on the Saturday, the club will hold a six hour ride with a morning tea and lunch stop leaving the showgrounds at 8.30am. As per the last two years, there will also be a short Sunday ride of 2 ½ hours for those riders not wanting to do a long ride and will also leave from the showgrounds but at a later time of 9am. The Trail Riders will try to vary the rides so this year so that they will follow a different route to last year. There are three classes held at each of the following shows, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Maclean, Nimbin, Alstonville Allbreeds, Casino, Lismore, Alstonville, Murwillumbah, Mullumbimby and Bangalow. POWER OF PINK FUNDRAISER EVENT The Power of Pink dressage and show jumping weekend is fast approaching and participants are urged to look out their best pink outfits and gear for the charity day. It is a National Breast Cancer Foundation endorsed charity event and will be held on 14th and 15th of October at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. The Power of Pink was awarded Community Event of the Year by Tweed Shire Council in 2011, and has received multiple nominations for Equestrian Queensland Event of the Year and the Wonders of Women Awards. In support of the event, the Australian Dressage Council has approved an official dress code exemption to allow the riders and their horses to compete in pink. Thanks to all the participants and sponsors, The Power of Pink has raised more than $68,000 for Breast Cancer Research over the past eight years. All funds raised including riding class entry fees, sponsorship and donations are donated directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. At last year’s event, more than 100 riders and 70 sponsors from participated in The Power of Pink and the event received national media exposure in multiple publications and participants shared their experiences on social media including photos of their horses and their prizes. Fun prizes for the Pinkest Horse, Pinkest Rider and Pretty in Pink are awarded each day. Prizes are awarded to the winners in all divisions, including over 10 official Equestrian Australia dressage classes. The atmosphere is always fun. There is plenty for families and spectators to do between watching the horses and riders, browsing the sponsor’s tents and bidding on auction items. The equestrian-based charity event is the perfect partner to help raise money and is well under way in its planning for the 2017 event and are seeking prizes for classes and/or donations for the popular online fundraising auction. Grafton to host horse driving trials Carriage Driving is a World Equestrian Games discipline that encompasses precision, speed and horsemanship. It tests drivers and horses alike and it is not for the faint hearted. Carriage Driving events are made up of three sections, similar to that of ridden Eventing. The first phase is Dressage - an elegant and traditional phase in a rectangular arena where correctness and accuracy of horse's paces are judged. In the second stage, the Cones, horses are driven between pairs of cones set apart just outside the width of the carriages that are driven through them. Precision and accuracy are tested while against the clock, so some speed is essential if the driver wants to win. Finally, in the Marathon, stamina, agility and once again speed are all tested on an extended course of some kilometres. Drivers and horses negotiate a series of obstacles along the way at speed, making it the best spectator section. On October 9 and 10, interstate and NSW drivers will meet at Hawthorne Park in Grafton to compete in a Horse Driving
The Horse Driving Trials Club, on the NSW North Coast, will be hosting a Carriage Trials event at Grafton on October 9 and 10.
Trials event - a slightly abbreviated version of a Carriage Driving event. Each driver will be looking to improve their performance with the long-term aim of making national level competition and perhaps even international competition. One of the organisers of the event, Patsy Wicks of Grafton, said the drivers have an out-
standing role model to follow, the current world champion Boyd Exell, an Australian who began competing at events just like the one coming up in Grafton. Since its inception in 1975, the sport is gaining a greater following around the world, partly due to Boyd Exell's outstanding successes. Boyd is the current and seven-
times World Indoor Champion and the current and four-times World Champion Outdoor Carriage Driver. The host club for Grafton, the Horse Driving Trials Club, will welcome everyone who comes to the event, either to watch the competition or to assist with holding the event. "People need no prior experience as the club is willing to teach newcomers to the sport,” Patsy said. “It is not unusual for someone to attend an event and then go home with the intention of turning an outgrown riding pony or horse into a driving pony or horse with assistance from trainers and coaches from the Horse Driving Trials Club. Study reveals why WA horses have tooth decay Horses fed oaten hay are almost three times more likely to develop tooth decay according to a new study at The University of Western Australia. Dr Kirsten Jackson, an equine dental veterinarian who is also studying a Masters of Philosophy by Research at UWA, said tooth decay in horses, or equine peripheral caries, is very common in Western Australia and causes a great deal of pain in horses. The study, published this week in Equine Veterinary Journal, surveyed 500 horses in WA and looked into risk factors for the condition to try to find a reason for why it was so common. "We found tooth decay affected nearly 60 per cent of horses surveyed and one of the most significant risk factors was the hay source fed to the horse," Dr Jackson said. "The horses fed on meadow hay were less than half as likely to have peripheral caries. We believe that the high water-soluble carbohydrate ('sugar') levels in the cereal hays are likely to be a factor." The study found the water

"By changing the way we manage tooth decay and avoiding feeds that are known to increase the risk, we can treat those with the condition and also prevent other horses from developing it in many cases. "The exciting part about the research is that the decay only affects that part of the tooth in the mouth at the time and the horse's teeth continue to erupt throughout their lifetime. "With the knowledge gained from the research, we have been able to modify the diet of affected horses and stop the process of decay. This allows the healthy tooth to erupt down and as such, we have been able to resolve the condition in many cases."
