Feeding your horse the right supplement

By MALCOLM GREEN, Technical Director, EquiFeast A supplement (or a feed designed to provide supplementary nutrients) is designed to plug the potential gaps in the forages (grass, hay, cereals etc.) fed to the horse as the basis of the diet.

Across the supplement and feed market, there are many products with differing vitamin and mineral levels and combinations.

The challenge for feed and supplement companies is what proportion of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) should be put into a formulated feed or supplement.

As you can imagine this can differ but I would like to give you a guidance on how we formulate our products at EquiFeast.

Generally a horse's base diet of forage (grass, hay and forage) can be rich in some nutrients and poor in others.

In Australian conditions, the chances of forage being iron or manganese deficient is very slim. Many horses suffer from severe overloads of these two minerals which are reported to interfere with copper and zinc

The challenge for supplement companies is establishing what proportion of of vitamins and minerals should be put into formulated feed. absorption in particular, leading to hoof problems.

We have carried out several field trials due to finding of these trials we don't add either of these minerals to our broad spectrum products in Australia.

Most of the other trace minerals in our products are supplied at 75% of the recommended level on the basis that the base forage will probably normally be marginally deficient.

Calcium deficient diets are rare.

Our trials and customer feedback tells us that for many oxalate affected horses the best option is to help them manage the calcium they are eating rather than add more calcium to the diet.

Calcium is a speciality of ours and an area which we have focused our trials, in particular in relation to the benefits and uses of chelated calcium.

Magnesium deficient diets are also very rare. Pastures and hays

that analyse as 'low' often still meet the RDA for magnesium for many horses.

Some nutritionists argue that high calcium levels interfere with magnesium absorption, however studies have shown this may not be the case.

In fact in Hintz & Schryver's work, the highest calcium diet had the best magnesium retention rate.

At EquiFeast, we passionately believe that too much magnesium in a horse's diet impairs brain function and can actually cause more anxiety and spookiness. We base this on the extensive data we have collected since our first blood trials in 2011.

The limited but consistent science supports this and shows that oral magnesium has the same effect on horses as the sedative, Acepromazine (ACP) There is one other group of nutrients that we add to our broad spectrum supplements and that is the amino acids lysine and methionine, and the organic sulphur source MSM. You will generally find these in hoof supplements but we regard horse's feet as fundamental to a horse's wellbeing.

Competition updates from our Technyflex riders Andrew Cooper from Balnarring had an excellent show with a bunch of horses at the recent Eventing Victoria Spring Horse Trials.

He took out the big 1* class from start to finish with Der Von Wedel a stallion by World Young Dressage Horse champion, Dimaggio.

"This horse just keeps on trying and will now be aimed at Adelaide 2*," Andrew said.

"I also had three other rides in the 1* with Isle of New Norfolk showing how consistent she is to finish on her dressage score and place sixth. Chatswood Verdasco stepped up to complete his first 1* to finish 13th and Macarthur Desperanto had a fiery first event back to finish mid field.

“Oaks Onyx showed what a true star he really is stepping up in style for his first 3* to come away with only time penalties to his dressage score to place third.

Hunters Hill was on his very best behaviour in the dressage ring to complete a calm test and only added a rail and time penalties to finish up mid-field in the 3*.

Nathan Harvey from North Maclean is in the throes of preparing for the trip of a lifetime - representing his country at the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi next year.

For the first time, show jumping will be one of the events at these Olympics and Nathan will be competing in this discipline, as well as in dressage.

He has been working on a horse simulator before having lessons over jumps on his horse Dom. Working on the simulator assists in fitness and with balance and precision.

And he's begun an introductory EA coaching course which will further his equestrian sport education and assist him in teaching others with disabilities.

Nathan recently attended a clinic conducted by international dressage rider and judge, Dr Ricky MacMillan.

"It was fabulous, I'll definitely be back for more lessons next month,” he said.

“And a big thank you to TECHNYFLEX. I really feel there's a difference in my two horses' movement since using your premium joint supplement."

Brett Parbery is now on his way home after representing Australia in the USA at the World Equestrian Games on Susan Duddy's gelding DP Weltmeiser.

Their test was reported by the covering media as, “Brett Parbery is a great showman and is getting every available point with a harmonious, smoothly flowing test.

Continually honing his skills and building upon his knowledge, Brett was pleased to have caught up with one of the world's leading dressage riders, Isabell Werth.

Whilst at these equestrian games he watched her training and studied every move.

Big October Ride 2018 celebrates 20 years The Dayboro Trailriders will be running their 20th annual horse trail riding event the Big October Ride on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th October.

Saturday rides leave the showgrounds at 8.30am and the Sunday ride leaves the showgrounds at 9am sharp.

Morning tea provided on Saturday.

This year will see an all new four hour ride and a three hour ride on Sunday.

With permission from the Rural Fireys, both evenings will be casual and participants can relax around the campfire.

A licensed bar will be operating both nights.

Come along Friday afternoon and camp for the weekend as the camping fee is included.

Ride fees are $25 each ride or both days $40 for visitors, or $15 each ride or $20 for both for TRA members.

Fees cover camping fees, insurance and morning tea.

All rides are non-competitive and leisurely paced and take in some spectacular countryside.

Participants need to bring their own horse and riding gear.

The Dayboro Trailriders will be host their 20th annual Big October Ride on the 27th and 28th of October There is no age limit on either riders or horses, however both will need to be fit enough and competent to take part.

Riders 16 years and under will require a responsible adult or guardian.

Riders 18 years and under must wear an approved riding helmet.

Strictly no stallions, rigs or dogs.

It is recommended that all horses be shod or wear boots and wear a halter and lead rope.

A sausage sizzle and drinks available to purchase both days.

This event has become avidly looked forward to, each year, by riders locally and further a field.

Turning songs and CDs into stockfeed As the effects of the drought worsen in NSW, cattle producer, family man, and country singer Roo Arcus is relying more on his offfarm income of music and music tours and turning songs into stockfeed.

Although, like many farmers who are struggling, Roo believes there are others far worse off than him.

He has had to reduce his breeding stock to nearly nothing and it will be at least five years before he is back on track, and that’s once the drought breaks.

Roo, and his wife, Sue, run a cattle breeding operation west of Goulburn and prepared for the dry as much as anyone could.

They culled their breeding stock to a small core herd, built a hayshed and bought hay, agisted land nearby and sold all their weaner calves, apart from a handful of heifers.

However, even all this was not enough, and, sadly, the core herd had to be sold as it became clear that the drought wasn’t going to end anytime soon. The demand of the calves on the cows was too much, and their condition was slipping fast.

“Most farmers do as much as they can to prepare for drought, but the last 20 years have not been easy years. I can count the number of good years on one hand” he said.

Roo Arcus, singer-songwriter and long-time farmer “Our herd has been shrinking and shrinking and all the costs of everything has gone up. We were as prepared as we could be, but it just got to the point where we couldn’t do anything more.”

Although Roo had limited feed in some spelled paddocks, the plague numbers of kangaroos decimated anything that was left.

“Any hay that is available to buy, if you can get it, is of limited quality,” Roo said.

“You end up with a situation where you are feeding cattle poor feed, they get full, but what they get out of it isn’t enough to sustain them. It got to the point where we

had to say we couldn’t let them slip into that condition where there’s no coming back from. We are now down to only four firsttime calvers, one old cow that was too old to travel, and another old cow who we held on to for sentimental reasons. We also have just a few sheep with their lambs… and three Appaloosa horses that my wife and kids just couldn’t let go.”

The singer-songwriter and longtime farmer said they now had to decide whether they could keep the young stock they had agisted nearby, or whether they would have to sell them as well.

“When we get a decent season, the national herd numbers are going to be so low, that the prices are going to be insane,” Roo said.

“We will have to go buy a bull to start the operation again, so it’s a long time before you see a dollar come back in. The earliest we could turn a dollar would be 18 months from the point of joining a bull to the first-time calvers and the replacement heifers.

“Selling those cows and calves this week also meant selling the years and years of breeding that have gone into those cows and calves that make them such an easy herd of cattle to handle and manage.

We’ve got to the point where they have unassisted calving, they were

bred here and have never lived anywhere else. That’s something that is lost and gone and it would be another 10 years until we are back in that situation.”

Although always active in the music industry, Roo will now have to rely on his off-farm income more than ever.

“My off-farm income is performing, recording and writing music and taking tours to the US, and I am very fortunate that I do have something else that I do, that is off farm work. For years the cattle business has been propping up the music business, and now it’s now it’s time to return the favour,” he said.

Roo has released three albums – Station Boy, This Here Cowboy, and Cowboys and Sunsets.

Roo’s survival mission is to sell more music, fill Arcus Adventures tour groups to the USA and play more festivals to keep the farm going and then get the cattle operation back on its feet when the drought breaks.

He has named his online store ‘The Feed Store’ where he is turning songs into stockfeed.

“We’ve got a shed full of CDs that we need to turn into a shed full of hay… and fast!” Roo said.

Managing manure to improve horse pastures Horses like to graze.

In nature they tend to select grasses, clovers and herbs and then move to new areas.

Horses prefer not to graze areas soiled by manure.

This self-imposed lax grazing enables them to avoid manure contaminated pasture which minimises their parasite burdens.

A grazing horse cannot see what it eats due to a blind spot immediately in front of its head.

Pasture selection is based on smell, touch and taste.

Smell is the most important and is critical in determining the palatability (acceptance) of pasture. The smell and avoidance of pasture soiled by manure causes "horse-sick" pastures.

Horses spend between 16 and 18 hours a day grazing.

The exact length of time depends on pasture quantity, quality and the level of supplementary feed.

Manure causes "horse-sick" pastures. Manure pattern tends to be influenced by the gender of the horse.

Paddocks containing stallions tend to have several large piles of manure. Mares also approach and smell manure, they however manure without turning around and as a consequence manure patches become progressively larger.

Geldings appear to be less particular as to where they manure.

A mature horse will generate around 7 kg dry-weight/m2 of manure, and the average area covered by a horse's manure heap is about 0.05 m2.

Manure, and to a lesser extent urine, affect pasture composition in two ways; by directly increasing growth (transfer of nutrients) and by the rejection of pasture around manure by horses.

The pasture around manure therefore grows rapidly due to increased nutrients and a lack of grazing. These areas quickly

The best method of managing manure is manure collection. To obtain all the benefits, manure must be collected every 24 hours.

Pasture harrowing, trailing an implement to spread manure evenly across a paddock and to desiccate parasite larvae, should only be done in hot weather after rainfall. Pasture sweeping and vacuuming are used on some horse studs.

Rotational grazing can reduce the rate by which a paddock becomes "horse-sick". Rotational grazing is when grazing is followed by a period of rest.

The length of this rest is normally determined by the growth rate of pasture (2 weeks grazing and 6 weeks rest is a good general rule).

Pasture management can also include slashing to remove poor quality clumps of pasture, which recover and grow pasture of improved quality that is more palatable to horses.

Smart feeding tips for horse owners

deficient. I believe the best way to eliminate this type of practice in horses is to ensure that horses have an appropriate level of roughage always. We don't have a good understanding of the horse's ability to self-medicate however.

4. Position your food on the ground.

Remember horses are grazing animals and it is very important to place feed bins and hay feeders either on the ground or low down. Locating feeders up to chest height or even higher interferes with the normal digestive process. Placing feeders high does not allow the horse to chew and grind his feed normally. If the horse is not digesting its feed properly, they are also not going to be utilising it properly.

5. Roughage, roughage, roughage! Horses require a high level of roughage (pasture, hay) per day to ensure a healthy digestive system.

This can be predominantly pasture hay and some lucerne, which has the advantage of being low in starch and sugars. Starving your horse of roughage can cause any number of issues, the worst being ulcers or colic. Particularly those on sandy soils, ensuring your horse has adequate roughage is vital for digestive and overall health.

6. Does increasing the intake of grain impact on horses prone to colic? Colic is associated with abdominal pain and there are many caus-

es. The gastrointestinal tract is very long and very complex and really is not a particularly superior design. Certain types of feed can contribute to colic, overfeeding grain is one of them. One of the most important aspects of managing digestive health which in turn relates to colic incidences is lack of pasture or excellent quality hay. What may also impact on the horse's digestive health and in turn colic is a decreased intake of water, so therefore it is very important to ensure that horses have plenty of fresh water available to them 24/7. It is not possible to point the finger specifically at grain being a cause of colic as there are many risk factors. One of the most common causes of colic is insufficient roughage, so ensuring that your horse is receiving an appropriate level of roughage will also reduce the risk of colic and other digestive health issues. The hindgut of the horse is unique and contains a bio system of microorganisms which break down fibre, the small intestines generally digests and absorbs sugar and starch. If a horse consumes a large feed that contains an elevated level of grain this can certainly create issues by spilling over into the hindgut. Microbial breakdown of starch and sugar can produce a more acidic situation this is also known as hindgut acidosis. Â continued page 17

Horse owners are always on the look out for tip to help in their horse feeding routines so I have compiled a list to help: 1. Maximise Pasture by rotating and strip grazing. Look at dividing your paddocks, particularly if you have large paddocks. If you have a small amount of land, like I do, you can still divide your paddocks by creating different sections and closing them off when they are over eaten. A clever idea, is to allow access to a walking track and a quiet, resting area to that horses move and then rest in - places that aren't full of grass. With small properties make sure you pick up your manure and don't harrow.

Removing the manure regularly will allow the ground to recover more quickly.

2. Slow down! Try a slow feed net/bin to reduce wastage and increase hay life. If you are lucky enough to have access to round bales invest in a slow hay feeding net which you can secure safely over the round bale, this not only slows your horse's chewing down but also lowers wastage. If you don't have access to a round bale then invest in large hay nets with small holes, or a slow feed bin. This is particularly useful for those managing easy keepers as you can use lucerne and not have them eat it all before it touches the ground!

3. Do horses naturally seek out nutrients that they require for their health and well-being?

Some horses eat dirt or chew bark, this is quite common in domesticated horses and the licking of dirt for example is often a way to increase salt intake. In some studies, types of dirt contain higher levels of iron and copper and it is thought that horses seek out this type of dirt and will lick the dirt to uptake these nutrients.

We don't really know why horses tend to lick dirt or chew bark but it does appear that horses behave this way if perhaps their diet is nutrient

A brand mash fed in winter will not prevent colic. There are many different suggestions to help with the horse's nutritional needs that are quite preposterous. Nutrition can be complicated by incorrect advice and a lack of understanding in the management of horses in general.

8. Overfeeding protein and does this increase the energy level in horses? Protein really should not have this type of effect on horses as it primarily contains amino acids and doesn't contribute much to energy production. Sugars and starch can affect behaviour in some horses.

But increasing carbohydrate intake is very likely to influence behaviour in horses that are genetically predisposed. By increasing sugars and starch cortisol levels may also increase this can certainly cause behavioural changes.

9. Horse owners concerned about the possibility of choke. In horses this is an oesophageal obstruction, basically almost any type of feed can cause choke this is generally related to horses that eat their feed to quickly and do not chew the feed efficiently. By ensuring that your horse has sufficient roughage and dental health checks will reduce the risk of choke.

10. Which grain is the best grain to feed your horse? Corn for example is used a lot with elevated level performance horses but unlike oats cannot be fed whole as the outer husk is too hard so therefore some type of processing must take place to enable it to be fed safely. Corn is quite calorie dense and has an average starch concentration of about 70% so certainly is very suitable for these types of horses. My preference is always whole oats as I love the fact that horses can be fed this grain whole safely. It is also a grain that is much lower in energy and protein than any other grain and more readily digestive and utilised by the horse.

11. Giving horses water straight after a hard workout is not recommended. It is important to allow the horse to cool down, lower the heart rate and respiratory rate and ensure that the body temperature returns to normal. It is also important to keep the muscles moving after intense exercise. Not allowing the horse to call down increases the risk of dehydration and in

12. Supplementation for maximisation.

Feeding a daily supplement will pay for itself in the long run by making sure your horses receive the correct daily nutrient intake with a balanced diet. A daily supplement plays a supporting role to your horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feed program.

Make sure you access a trusted source and products that deliver, are safe, natural and easy to feed and offer support and advice so you can choose the right product for your horse.

13. Choosing your feeds. A simple non-complicated diet is essential for the health of your horse. Feeding longer chop chaffs, some grains such as oats or even steamed and rolled barley, mixing your own or using a high fibre, high quality compressed pellet, is not only healthy but economical too.

Feeds, such as steamed and compressed long stem fibre pellets are a great option as they

slow the chewing process down and this is a great thing for digestion.

14. Talk to a qualified nutritionist. If you want to gain the most out of your feed rations and ensure you are not doubling up or feeding the wrong feed to your horse, contacting a qualified nutritionist is essential.

Many offer free advice, and even better, a diet plan to assist in managing horses through all conditions, on all budgets.

Big October Ride 2018 celebrates 20 years The Dayboro Trailriders will be running their 20th annual horse trail riding event the Big October Ride on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th October.

Saturday rides leave the showgrounds at 8.30am and the Sunday ride leaves the showgrounds at 9am sharp.

Morning tea provided on Saturday.

This year will see an all new four hour ride and a three hour ride on Sunday.

With permission from the Rural Fireys, both evenings will be casual and participants can relax around the campfire.

A licensed bar will be operating both nights.

Come along Friday afternoon and camp for the weekend as the camping fee is included.

Ride fees are $25 each ride or both days $40 for visitors, or $15 each ride or $20 for both for TRA members.

Fees cover camping fees, insurance and morning tea.

All rides are non-competitive and leisurely paced and take in some spectacular countryside.

Participants need to bring their own horse and riding gear.

There is no age limit on either riders or horses, however both will need to be fit enough and compe-

allergy. Nevertheless, the problem is still very frustrating to deal with and stressful to the horse, it simply is just not true Queensland Itch.

Obviously, because the problem is related to the presence of insects, it is far more common in summer and will vary with the local seasonal conditions.

By day, flies are the most common cause and they will land on the horse and bite them all over but very frequently bother the legs, head, and neck region and by night mosquitoes are the

number one culprit. Here-in lies the problem, insects are ubiquitous and often in plague proportions. If the insects continue to bite the horses, then all forms of therapy are useless It is virtually impossible to completely prevent insects from attacking the horse. In very sensitive horses or those with a definite allergy, any bite, anywhere, will re-activate the allergy.

Treatment has to revolve around preventing the animal from being bitten. Hoods and rugs are usually the first line of defence.

Stabling the horse in late afternoon and night and general fly control in the environment all play a part.

There are many topical insecticides available but all have limited effect. All work if applied frequently enough but I am not convinced any have any real long term effects and so frequency of application is a major factor. Many owners fervently believe that apple cider vinegar will help control the itch.

There is no real scientific reason that it should prevail but possibly there is some mechanism whereby it can alter the odour or local environment of the skin and act as some form of repellant. Certainly it is commonly used and it probably does no harm to try one cupful a day in the feed.

Once the insects are controlled, medications such as shampoos and topical ointments can settle down the existing lesions and systemic cortisone will stop the immune reaction but if the insects are still accessing the horse, nothing will prevail

QUEENSLAND ITCH This is widely used colloquial local name for a condition that occurs world wide and is easily the most common problem of the skin of horses.

True Queensland Itch is a very specific condition that only affects a relatively small number of horses. It is an allergy to a particular type of sand-fly and so the horse has to be in an area where the sand-fly lives and also the horse has to be allergic to the insect. The condition is devastating to the individual if it suffers the problem.

What is far more common and generalized is insect bite hypersensitivity. The difference here is that any insect can cause the problem and more often it is a local irritation and sensitivity to the actual bite rather than a true

LICE, TICKS & MANGE Mange is common condition affecting heavy horses, mainly because of the thick hair growth and feather on the lower limbs.

The disease is caused by a microscopic mite that lives in the skin and loves to hide in the thick hair of the pastern. It causes the horses an intense irritation and horses are frequently stamping their feet and biting at their legs. The condition is difficult to treat and usually requires some combination of clipping the hair and local application of insecticides that will kill the mite.

In recent years, considerable success has been obtained with topical application of a flea control product used in dogs but this is an "off label" use of the product and care must be exercised.

Lice are more common in winter as the hair coat grows longer.

They are very irritating and the horse is intensely itchy. The condition is very contagious.

The lice are relatively easy to kill with insecticide sprays. Similarly ticks can be very irritating to the horse. They live in the pasture and attach to the horse in the paddock. Commonly we see a very acute local swelling.

RAIN SCALD This is a very common condition and in fact presents in three different ways, all caused by the one infectious organism, "Dermatophilus".

The most common presentation is "Greasy Heel". True rain scald is a scabby type dermatophilus usually occurring over the back and body and associated with exposure to wet conditions.

The third form is "Mud Fever" which is usually seen as a scabby exudation on the front of the cannon bones. All are caused by the same organism that lives everywhere but needs damp moist conditions to survive and so if the skin is wet, becomes irritated and inflamed and this allows the organism to colonize.

The germ itself is relatively easy to kill with antibiotics or antiinfective agents.

The problem is usually getting the anti-bacterial into contact with the organism sneakily living in the depths of the scab and exudates and protected from the antibiotic. Success depends on softening, cleaning, and getting rid of the scab so the agents can contact the bacteria.

Greasy heel presents a special problem when it occurs on white feet. The dermatophilus organism has the ability to sensitize the skin to ultra violet light and exposure can result in a severe vasculitis and very refractory condition that is very difficult to control. Usually cortisone has to be utilized.

RINGWORM The third common condition is ringworm. In the horse, this rarely presents as a true "ring lesion" but rather is a generalized patchy spreading condition that is dry and has tufts of hair falling out. Some forms can be itchy. Treatment can be very difficult.

Once again, it is easy enough to kill the fungi if medication can be applied but the infection often lives deep in the roots of the hair follicles and the medication cannot get to the organism. Judicious shampoos and soaking the horse in medication for some time is the best approach.

How to start a thoroughbred

By DAIKI CHUJO The Thoroughbred Industry is huge in Australia.

There are many horse racing and that means many to rehome once they finish racing.

We operate a unique style of the horse training stables -training actual racehorses to race and then educating ex-racehorses for other equestrian sports.

The basics of training isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very different from racing to other equestrian disciplines.

Of course this varies with more advanced levels but in this article, I would like to focus on working with a green thoroughbred and preparing it for racing and also re-educating a thoroughbred for life after the race track.

Many thoroughbreds can be very sensitive but that is not always the case.

Sometimes they think they're doing the right thing by simply going fast, After all thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what they are trained to do.

The key to success is teaching a thoroughbred, either racing or retired, that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go fast every time they get ridden.

Making a good connection between the horse and the rider makes the life easier for both.

First and most importantly, the horse must be in good health before commencing its training.

Trimming/shoeing, dental, worming, updated vaccinations and correctly fitted tack are vital.

Feeding can vary with the condition of the horse but I often start with good quality of roughage with low energy feeds even for racehorses coming into pre-training.

Complete feeds are an easy and simple way to give horses enough vitamins and minerals to support their work and daily needs.

Re-educated racehorses are used in a wide range of equestrian disciplines On the first week of training, my main focus is to get to know the horse and for it to know me.

We don't do a lot of exercises, mainly focusing interaction such as brushing, rugging, saddling up and general care.

By doing these everyday, you can get to know what the horse likes and dislikes, whether it is sensitive or lazy and you can pick up if there are any other issues which may need attending to.

Ground work is as important as riding and often horses give you a lot of signs at this stage which may indicate issues when your progress to riding.

Once we've got to know each other, it is time to step up to either light riding work or lunging.

Regardless whether riding or lunging, we keep the exercises very simple.

These include asking the horse to move forward, to slowdown and turning.

Most racehorses don't understand how to be on the bit and they often are sensitive in the mouth.

It's crucial that you don't try to pull their head down to put them in the round shape.

Among the first things we teach is having the horse respond to commands by keeping the contact and move them off to the side, by pushing off by your inside leg if you are riding or

pushing the quarters out with the lunging whip if the horse is on the lunge.

When the horse progresses to the riding stage, we ask it to move forward and sideways.

This makes the horse start to bend through their rib cage and relaxes their back.

Leg yield is a very useful tool for achieving this goal.

Once the horse relaxes its back the head naturally drops into the correct position.

It's important that they need to go forward but not fast.

Some racehorses have tendency to just go fast

However if you just use your hands to slow them down you'll kill the forwardness and they often get confused and upset.

This situation could lead into their problematic behaviours.

Instead, your seat and voice are the main aids for slowing down.

The bitless bridle changed how I ride and train

By SUZY MALONEY B.Eq.Sc Many people are aware of bitless bridles due to the recent worldwide increase in their popularity. Riders are looking for an effective method of horse control while being considerate of the horse and how they feel.

We want our horses to enjoy riding as much as we do and using a bitless bridle is a huge step in this direction.

Bitless bridles work with pressure/release. Pressure is applied, the horse responds, the pressure is released.

There are two categories of bitless bridles, cross-under and side-pull. The cross-under distributes pressure around the entire head, while the side-pull concentrates it just on the nose.

All horses are different and have their own preferences, as do the humans.

My personal preference is the cross-under. When applying an aid with the cross-under the pressure is felt at the back of the jaw, the horses' cheeks, the poll and the nose. The same amount of rein pressure is used as with other bridles while each spot

This distribution makes for very humane horse control and also makes the bridle very effective.

The cross-under gives the same amount of control as a bitted bridle in those 'tricky situations' and can be used for all horse disciplines.

The magic doesn't stop there; over 10 years ago when I first started bitless riding, I thought I was just using a new piece of gear. Then as time passed, my horses started to change.

Without the pain of the bit, I found them listening to me more, relaxing and connecting on a level I had never before experienced.

It was then I realised what a huge thing the bit is for the horse. We put it in the mouth, which then closes, and it disappears, but for the horse it never disappears.

Riding bitless has changed everything I do with horses, how I ride, how I train, how I teach and how I communicate and connect with horses, it has changed my life.

Spooky horses - how to build confidence

By TANJA KRAUS Building the confidence in a spooky horse is an important part of helping them become the calm and confident partner that you are looking for.

Exposing your spooky horse to scary objects in the correct way will help develop his courage.

Doing it in the incorrect way can add to their worry.

Here I demonstrate the steps that I follow, to help my horses build confidence, and preserve their curiosity without scaring them.

The images below show the various steps needed to build a

horse’s confidence.

Have the scary object in a safe area - round pen or arena, and lead your horse into the area, allow the horse to look at the object from a distance and walk large circles around the object, both ways.

Walking around both ways is vital as it allows your horse to see the object with both eyes.

While you are circling, your horse will show you when they are curious enough to get closer.

Continue doing this until they are wanting to approach and investigate the object.

Once the horse is comfortable with the object on the ground,

you can pick up the object.

Walk away from the horse, allowing the horse to follow/chase the object.

Allowing the horse to dictate the distance, along with allowing him to feel as though he is pushing it around, builds his confidence.

He will eventually want to approach the object and investigate again.

Once the horse is comfortable with the object being held above the ground, you can then slowly approach and touch the horse all over with the object, allowing the horse to smell and investigate, and move away when he

feels threatened.

Allowing the horse to tell you when he is worried or not, allows him to control the situation, which builds trust in you.

Eventually, you will build the confidence to the point where the horse no longer is worried about the object and has no interest.

Building experiences and trust like this helps to develop the horse's trust in you, and over time the horse will have confidence around multiple objects.

This process can be adjusted for different objects if you cannot circle them, or pick them up for example.

Dressage is a subjective sport and we rely on the comments of judges and coaches as well as our 'feeling' as riders to guide our training. The human brain is not the most accurate tool.

Equestic allows me to monitor many different variables and get real numbers to compare training sessions. I am able to set measurable goals and monitor my ability to achieve them.

The basic variables measured are time ridden in each gait and each direction as well as the number of transitions between gaits. There is also measurement of time in a straight line to help you balance your workouts. The more advanced variables are the impulsion, rhythm and symmetry.

Impulsion is a measure of the ground force over time in each gait. It is something that you are judged on in every dressage test.

Equestic allows you to see when your horse or possibly you become tired and lose impulsion. This has helped me to understand how long a training or warm-up session should be before it loses its effectiveness.

So if my horse is losing impulsion after 30 minutes then warming up at a competition for 40 minutes means we can't do our best test.

Rhythm is a measurement in beats per minute for each gait.

The Equestic SaddleClip records and monitors your training sessions Equestic shows me the rhythm and how consistent my horse is with the rhythm. Consistency of rhythm is very important. If you ever do a freestyle test to music you will need to know these numbers.

Symmetry is measured in the trot rhythm, the push off and the landing. The symmetry of the trot rhythm is shown as a time measurement and allows you to see if one diagonal is slightly slower than the other. Again this is visible with the human eye but not if there are very slight discrepancies. Symmetry of push off and landing force is much harder to assess with the human eye and these are measured in G force. While discrepancies may not be visible to the human eye they are important because of the potential to overload a limb and the opportunity to detect problems or changes in a horse early. This means as riders we can get our team of health professionals to assess the horse sooner before real damage occurs.

Lastly I love the ability to compare training sessions. I put a couple of notes on each training session so I can look at the patterns and reassess what made one session more successful than another. As a vet and animal biomechanical medicine practitioner I have also started to use the saddle clip on clients' horses to help show them where problems are occurring and how they are improving with treatment and good training programs.

Explaining what goes into equine acupuncture

By JENNIFER BOYLE Equine acupuncture is an evidence-based modality that has been extensively researched and has been proven time and again in scientific studies which show how effective it is for a multitude of ailments.

It can treat everything from musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, dermatological and reproductive issues.

Acupuncture is also brilliant with pain management in horses whether acute or chronic.

The Western scientific explanation of acupuncture is that just like humans, the acupuncture points we use on horses are located over nerve endings, blood vessels and mast cells in various locations around the body.

Inserting needles into these points is used to stimulate the area or sedate an overreactive response that's happening within the body.

Something I have found during my years of experience as an equine acupuncturist is that many horse owners are not only unsure about the wide range of things they can use equine acupuncture for, but are often also unsure of what to expect from an equine acupuncture session.

I take a holistic approach to treatment and take the whole history of the horse into account.

Depending what the issue is or whether the problem is not yet known, assessments can vary a bit but typically each session with me starts with an evaluation of current condition, history, physical palpation, viewing for correct or abnormal posture, checking for proper muscle development, stretching to see range of flexibility, watching the horse being lunged and, if possible, being ridden to view the range of motion and any gait irregularities.

I also video the session so both the owner and I can see subtle things sometimes not picked up on first viewing and so that we are able to compare progress as we move through treatments.

During the treatment I also discuss diet, herbal recommendations, supplements and do urine pH testing.

After I've got a thorough history and idea of current condition then I decide the needle points and do the acupuncture treatment.

Each treatment session with me goes for minimum one hour and depending on the horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s condition, they often stretch out to an hour and a half. Follow up treatments, of course, depend on the individual case.

Sometimes one treatment can be enough and sometimes ongoing treatments are necessary.

It's important for the owner to know that every horse is totally unique and should be treated accordingly.

There is no one size fits all attitude when dealing with individual animals.

I sometimes get the question, â&#x20AC;&#x153;'But what if my horse is scared of needles?â&#x20AC;?

Firstly acupuncture needles are a lot smaller than hypodermic needles.

If a horse really is very resistant to needling I work around that with acupressure until they're accepting enough to be needled.

Sometimes all it takes is a few needles inserted into some points associated with sedation

This horse has an old injury to the pastern and quite close to the coronary band which has left quite thick scar tissue. Scars new or old are worth treating as they can hinder blood flow and circulation. for them to relax enough and start feeling the endorphins flowing; usually they're fine after that. They then understand it's nothing to be worried about and totally relax.

One thing that's good to understand before booking a session with an equine acupuncturist, is that all practitioners work differently. There are also different styles of acupuncture.

It's important that you as an owner are informed about the level of experience the practitioner has not only with equine acupuncture but horses in general and how they will run their treatment sessions, to ensure that the practitioner you select is the right fit for you and your horse.

Know also that only vets are allowed to diagnose so while we can treat ailments and perhaps have a good idea of what's going on especially from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, if you're wanting an exact

Western diagnosis of something, call your vet.

Horses present with a lot of muscle and musculoskeletal issues and it can be confusing sometimes for the owner to know which type of practitioner to call.

Every case is different so I'm always happy to chat about what's going on and point people in the right direction.

Teenage jockey wins Birdsville Cup The biggest ever Birdsville Races culminated in scintillating style with the headline 1600m UBET Birdsville Cup narrowly taken out by 17 year-old apprentice jockey Adin Thompson on the Johnsontrained Blue Jest.

The final day of Western Queensland's richest two-day racemeet saw close to 5000 revelers converge on the tiny town of Birdsville to party and punt across a stacked seven-race card, with cornflower blue skies and striking desert terrain further heating up the bumper action.

Topping a stellar 12 horse field, the connections of Birdsville Cup winner Blue Jest nabbed a record $40,000 - the largest prize-purse in the race's prestigious 136-year history.

Thompson, one of the youngest Birdsville Cup-winning jockeys in history, is based in Miles, Queensland, with husband and wife duo Bevan and Mel Johnson, who co-trained Blue Jest to a nailbiting win.

After the race, Bevan Johnson said, "The horse felt good all week.

They told me you couldn't win with top weight, and then we drew the worst barrier.

I'm going to celebrate, that's for sure!"

2018 Birdsville Races attracted record entries continues a string of successes at country race meets.

He led overall acceptances for this year's Birdsville Races with 13 starters and is the 2017 Queensland Country Trainer of the Year.

The Johnsons have been fielding horses at the Birdsville Races since 2010, but 2018 marks their first Birdsville Cup victory.

Their jockey daughter Dakota had ridden to many race wins upon Blue Jess, but fell pregnant this year - giving young-gun Thompson the opportunity to ride in the Cup. As in previous years, entertainment and trackside hospitality were also key draw-cards, while

live music, pub festivities and Fred Brophy's famous boxing troupe kept crowds bustling in the township of Birdsville itself.

The 16th annual Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour also hit the track on the final day of the Birdsville Races, with Australian all-time great jockey Jim Cassidy parading the Cup before handing it over to Birdsville Race Club President, David Brook.

The 2018 Birdsville Races boasted the biggest race field in the event's iconic 136-year history, with a record 170 entries accepted across 13 races.

The 170 acceptances for the 2018 race card broke the previous record of 164, which was set in 2015.

The final field collectively journeyed more than 10,000kms, from places as far away as Darwin, Ballarat, Stawell, Quorn, Murray Bridge, Adelaide, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and the Gold Coast.

For the first time in 2018, punters from across Australia were able to watch all of the action from the Birdsville Races live from the comfort of their own home, thanks to a national telecast deal with Sky Racing 2.

The new deal saw the Races' entire line-up telecast into homes across Australia, with half of the wagering proceeds donated to the Drought Appeal to help Queensland farmers doing it tough.

"We've had an absolute cracker of a meet this year - from our biggest ever race field, to awesome crowds and top-notch weather," said Birdsville Race Club Vice President, Gary Brook.

"It's wonderful to be able to see continued growth in an event that's 136 years-old - and we keep welcoming new and familiar faces every year from not only the racing community, but also travellers from all over the country and abroad.

The dust never truly settles in Birdsville, and we're already looking forward to next year's event!"

Jumping Trainer to feature at EQUITANA New Zealand’s Vicki Wilson is set to return to EQUITANA Melbourne in 2018 for a highly anticipated Jumping Training Feature.

She is hugely accomplished across all facets of equestrian – from World Cup Jumping to breaking, fixing to training, care and now in equine therapy putting her in demand across the globe.

She will be bringing all elements of her highly regarding training repertoire to her Jumping Clinic.

Her back-to-back wins in the World Championship of Colt Starting launched her in the United States where she has a growing large international following.

Her sore horse workshops in Australia are sold out months in advance, with EQUITANA Melbourne a chance for many to learn more from this very talented woman during her Jumping Training feature.

Her sore horse clinic allows people to take home knowledge that could help their own horses.

She is also in the throes of creating an elite rehab program at her base in Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand.

Vicki last attended EQUITANA Melbourne in 2016 to throngs of fans and she is back in 2018 to deliver a highly anticipated Jumping Training feature on Friday, 16 November.

Vicki Wilson has a certain knack about her. Her talent with horses is undeniable.

This fiercely determined Northlander is back at EQUITANA Melbourne as a Feature Educator, delivering the jumping training feature and two education sore horse sessions.

Wilson’s own equestrian journey started when she was very young and at two she was given her own Shetland pony which led to competitive showjumping at 15.

The rest is history and she has been well rewarded both in and out of the ring for her talents.

She’s known for her hard work, and there’s not much the 31-yearold can’t do.

“I am always looking to learn,” she said.

“Every vet and farrier I use, I watch, study and ask questions – why, how, what works. I just want to be continuously learning and improving what I do.”

She’s been helping horses all her life, but it is only in the last decade her equine therapy skills have been given a name.

“It started when (Olympic and World Champs showjumper) Samantha McIntosh recommended an equine therapist. It was for a pony who had been to Massey University and we had been told

“We were a bit sceptical to be honest. We had people look at him but no one could pin point why we couldn’t pick up his back feet.”

She turned to equine chiropractor Dan Erickson and within 45 minutes of him treating the horse, they had shoes on those back feet.

“This is a horse that no one had been able to even trim his back feet for four years and I had got him because he was apparently dangerous,” she said.

That horse is Showtym Spotlight – her star demo pony who hasn’t missed a beat since he met Erickson.

Erickson has become her mentor – he’s the person she turns to for advice when she is stumped.

“He is just amazing. I can call him, describe what I am seeing and he just says do this. Straight away I am dealing with a different horse.”

Wilson said the feedback she has had from owners of horses she has fixed is nothing short of incredible and makes her world.

“There are a lot of body workers in the equine world and I don’t believe you can just limit yourself to only one way of doing things.”

She can watch a horse trot across a paddock and tell immediately where it is sore.

“It makes it very hard now to watch a showjumping class or a

dressage test and I can see where the horse is not happy,” she said.

The horses she has worked with have become case studies for her, and as word travels, so too does the demand for her clinics, with more booked in the US, Australia, Canada and Europe.

“Whether it is a brumbie in Australia or a showjumper elsewhere – it is all about helping horses and giving the general public knowledge they can fill their own tool boxes with.”

Wilson has been invited back to the Colt Starting event for next year.

“It is an incredible competition – especially when you go there not expecting anything and the competitors were so strong this year.”

With 8000 very vocal and loyal fans – some of whom travel five days to get there and others who have been coming each of the 15 years – it is hot house of emotion and atmosphere.

“I wasn’t riding fit for it this year, and that was hard. I really had to look after myself after the surgery and had only started one horse the week before as a practice.”

This year produced the closest finish in the history of the event and Wilson had no idea she had won the coveted title and $US100,000 winner’s purse until it was actually announced.

She brought her horse Kentucky home on the back of her first win-

ner’s cheque and would have done the same this year had one of the judge’s not asked to have the horse.

“It is huge and life-changing prize money – I can’t complain."

Wilson is now in the throes of creating an elite rehab program at her new base in Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand.

Wilson has 15 mares foaling a year at the property alongside her competitive team.

“I love starting horses,” she said.

She still has her sights set on competing offshore at top level.

But for now, she has to take a little time out as her own body recovers from a second surgery on a troublesome shoulder.

It was injured in a fall some years ago and exacerbated with more damage.

She had surgery on both her shoulder and hip in September last year but re-injured her shoulder in December.

She had it really well-strapped for her successful defence of the Colt Starting comp but knew more surgery was needed.

It’s hard to sideline such an active and driven horsewoman, but she knows if she wants to achieve all her future goals, then a little time out won’t go astray.

Olympian gives racehorses new careers Legendary Australian eventer and seven-time Olympian Andrew Hoy is set to return to Australia as a guest of Racing Victoria’s (RV) Off The Track program for the 20th anniversary of EQUITANA Melbourne.

Hoy, now based in the UK, last attended EQUITANA in 2003 and will be delivering an exclusive training feature on behalf of Off The Track on Friday, 16 November.

This clinic will be complimentary for all EQUITANA attendees as part of a general admission ticket on the day.

The triple Australian Olympic gold-medallist, who rode thoroughbred gelding Kiwi to eventing gold at the Barcelona Games in 1992, traditionally relies on either Off The Track gallopers or purpose-bred horses with heavy thoroughbred influence when competing at the international top level.

This will be the only opportunity for the general public to see Hoy while he is in Australia and attendees will have the chance to meet the man himself throughout the day.

Hoy’s Training Feature at EQUITANA will showcase retired racehorses that have begun their new careers as performance horses.

The RPSBS Qld State show for 2018 with be run over two days on October 27 and 28 at Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture.

The new two day program will run in two rings to hopefully avoid class clashes with hunter in one ring and show ponies the other.

Power of Pink raising money for breast cancer Tweed Valley Equestrian Group is holding a Breast Cancer Fundraiser this year, “The Power of Pink Dressage & Show jumping Spectacular” on the 6th & 7th of October.

The event now in its seventh year was awarded “Community Event of the Year” by Tweed Shire Council in 2011.

So far it has raised more than $80,000 dollars for Breast Cancer Research.

TVEG is proud to partner with Summerland Dressage Club this year for the biggest Dressage and Showjumping Competition of the year.

There were more than 125 entries with riders coming from Port Macquarie to Brisbane entering last year’s event.

There are prizes to the winners in all divisions but also fun prizes for the Pinkest Horse, Pinkest Rider and “Pretty in Pink” best dressed horse and rider in pink.

All riders had a fantastic day with smiles everywhere.

There was also a large division of junior riders (all girls) and it is hoped that from a young age the day will help them understand the importance of being aware of this disease that affects so many women.

Exciting changes for the beautiful main arena of the Mullumbimby show have been made for horse section entrants. New timetables will be trialed to alleviate disruptions.

Respected Stock Horse breeder and judge Kellie Handford will be presiding over the Stock Horse ring at the 2018 Show.

The popular showjumping program will be run on Saturday with great cash prizes from our generous sponsors for the great selection of events.

Trotting displays are again generously sponsored by Garrards Horse and Hound. One lucky driver will go home with a new RIO gig donated by Garrards. To help with new timetables within the Main Arena for all trotting drivers must pre-nominate their entries - contact details for the trotting is on the show website.

Sunday there is sporting events to be stewarded by Mullumbimby Pony Club members. Starting at 8am with nominations from 7.30am One off entry fee of $5- for all events with prize money of $10 for 1st and $5 for second with ribbons to 6th placing.
