The Horse Report

Abbie still smiling and has her competitive streak By PAULA ANTHONY In the August edition of The Horse Report, we asked our readers to give support to young Queensland equestrian Abbie Sweeper who was left fighting for her life in hospital after a fall from her horse. Abbie was attending a local pony club gymkhana at Laidley when she took a tumble, her horse did not bolt or rare or buck it just looked like a simple fall like we see regularly with kids and horses. But unfortunately for Abbie that was not the case. The awkwardness of the fall left her with a brain bleed and a seriously damaged spinal cord. Abbie from the Lockyer Valley has been in the hands of the PICU staff at the Queensland Children's Hospital for the last couple of months and is likely to spend at least a year in hospital. Abbie and her parents, Amanda and Russell, are very well-known and heavily involved in riding and showing Australian Stock Horses. This is their passion and life and now, unfortunately, they find themselves in an unimaginably heartbreaking situation. Her mum Amanda has had to leave her job and stay at Ronald McDonald House to be close to her daughter The spinal cord is a part of the brain and controls many functions like the heart rate and breathing. Medical experts say Abbie's injury is very severe and will have significant impact on her life and are unsure if Abbie will ever breath for herself or walk again. Abbie is progressing as the days and weeks go bye. She was initially in a coma and when she first came out of it was only able to communicate by blinking. Doctors were unsure if she would ever speak due to her brain injury but then out of the blue when her tracheotomy was cuffed, she was able to speak in sentences. Her first sentence was "Hi mummy, I love you mummy," Amanda said. Abbie is now spending more time sitting up and enjoys the regular pet therapy days, facepainting and visits to the Starlight

Abbie Sweeper is only 10 and after an unfortunate horse accident faces a long recovery in hospital. Smiles are becoming more common especially when she received a surprise visit by jockey Greg Hall and the 2019 Melbourne Cup.

room at the hospital each day to enjoy some time away from the PICU. Amanda said , “We are all getting good at games and quizzes, helping Abbie to win prizes. Just can’t get that competitive streak out of her”. She has now got an uncuffed trachy which allows her to talk almost normally again. Recently Abbie had a surprise visit by jockey Greg Hall and the 2019 Melbourne Cup. It was a big thrill for her as Greg chatted to her about winning the Cup on Subzero in 1992. The visit was arranged by Ronald McDonald House. Abbie’s parents, Amanda and Russell have been very open and honest with Abbie about her condition. They tell her that many jockeys that have had catastrophic falls have made miraculous recoveries. The medical staff at the hospital

have also been so wonderful keeping up her spirits and she has had the best of specialist care. Abbie is very resilient and still maintains a sense of humour. Sometimes she plays dead with the nurses and they all have a laugh. Abbie has no idea how close she came to that being a reality. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to raise money for Abbie's rehabilitation as this will be a very long road, months in hospital and years of rehabilitation. Having personally known the Sweepers through my connections over the years competing in the arena showing Australian Stock Horses, I hope other members of the horse show world will dig deep and give whatever donation possible to help ease some of the burden for Abbie and her parents during this difficult time. Akhal Tekes, aka ‘Golden Horses’, are set to shine The Akhal Tekes, which originate from desert areas around Turkmenistan, are known as the "Golden Horses" and thought to be one of the oldest horse breeds in the world. Their coats have a metallic sheen due to a particular genetic characteristic whereby their hair follicles are hollow, thereby reflecting the light. Their conformation is distinctly graceful and athletic and horse aficionados either love them or don't. They are tall, with long pasterns, backs and ears, are lean and have narrow shoulders. They have a floating gait and their hind legs "snake" at a trot making for a smooth ride. They are a multi-discipline breed, performing at the highest levels in racing, endurance, eventing, cross country, dressage and jumping. Akhal Tekes are adaptable to varying weather environments, maintaining good condition in cold and hot climates. They are great doers and require less hard feed and water than many other breeds. There are less than 10 purebred Akhal Tekes in Australia including a single stallion, JBK Mukam of Die Kinder Stud. There is a new generation of part bred Akhal Tekes, successfully crossed with Thoroughbreds and Arabians maintaining the distinctive qualities of the Tekes. Three mares are currently in foal ready to bring forth the 2019 progeny. Akhal Tekes are usually solid in colour, with buckskin, black, bay, palomino and cremello

The options when it comes time to cover your mare There are two general ways to "cover" or breed the mare: Live cover: the mare is brought to the stallion's residence and is covered "live" in the breeding shed. She may also be turned out in a pasture with the stallion for several days to breed naturally ('pasture bred'). The former situation is often preferred, as it provides a more controlled environment, allowing the breeder to ensure that the mare was covered and places the handlers in a position to remove the horses from one another should one attempt to kick or bite the other. Artificial Insemination (AI): the mare is inseminated by a veterinarian or an equine reproduction manager, using either fresh, cooled or frozen semen. It is considered safe to breed a mare to a stallion of much larger size. Because of the mare’s type of placenta and its attachment and blood supply, the foal will be limited in its growth within the uterus to the size of the mare's uterus but will grow to its genetic potential after it is born. Test breedings have been done with draft horse stallions bred to small mares with no increase in the number of difficult births. When breeding live cover, the mare is usually boarded at the stud. She may be "teased" several times with a stallion that will not breed to her, usually with the stallion being presented to the mare over a barrier. Her reaction to the teaser, whether hostile or passive, is noted. A mare that is in heat will generally tolerate a teaser (although this is not always the case), and may present herself to him, holding her tail to the side. A veterinarian may also determine if the mare is ready to be bred, by ultra-

Mare are teased over a safe barrier prior to live cover to avoid injury sound or palpating daily to determine if ovulation has occurred. Live cover can also be done in liberty on a paddock or on pasture, although due to safety and efficacy concerns, it is not common at professional breeding farms. When it has been determined that the mare is ready, both the mare and intended stud will be cleaned. The mare will then be presented to the stallion, usually with one handler controlling the mare and one or more handlers in charge of the stallion. Multiple handlers are preferred, as the mare and stallion can be easily separated should there be any trouble. Artificial insemination (AI) has several advantages over live cover and has a very similar conception rate. The mare and stallion never have to come in contact with each other, which therefore reduces breeding accidents, such as the mare

POLARMORE Black Thoroughbred Stallion Sydney-winning son of champion sire More Than Ready (USA) and the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner Polar Success

kicking the stallion. AI opens up the world to international breeding. A mare also does not have to travel to the stallion, so the process is less stressful on her and if she already has a foal, the foal does not have to travel. AI allows more mares to be bred from one stallion, as the ejaculate may be split between mares. AI reduces the chance of spreading sexually transmitted diseases between mare and stallion. AI allows mares or stallions with health issues, such as sore hocks which may prevent a stallion from mounting, to continue to breed. Frozen semen may be stored and used to breed mares even after the stallion is dead. However, the semen of some stallions does not freeze well. Some breed registries may not permit the registration of foals resulting from the use of frozen semen after the stallion's death, although other large registries accept such usage and provide registrations. The overall trend is toward permitting use of frozen semen after the death of the stallion. A stallion is usually trained to mount a phantom (or dummy) mare, although a live mare may be used, and he is most commonly collected using an artificial vagina (AV) which is heated to simulate the vagina of the mare. The AV has a filter and collection area at one end to capture the semen, which can then be processed in a lab. The semen may be chilled or frozen and shipped to the mare owner or used to breed mares "on-farm". When the mare is in heat, the person inseminating introduces the semen directly into her uterus using a syringe and pipette.

Balanced nutrition is key to healthy foals By ANTOINETTE FOSTER

Dip Nut Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Our environment affects us and our horses. Over the last 30-45 years, we have seen an increase in pollution (at an alarming rate), deforestation, over use of chemicals and land, depletion of the ozone layer, soil deficiency and a rise in salinity levels. Needless to say our horses are trapped in this ever-increasing problem, just as we are. It is important to feed our foals safely and effectively, neither overfeeding nor underfeeding. There are many conditions associated with malnutrition. Often the word malnutrition is used in the wrong way. Malnutrition can mean overweight or underweight, which means there is a major shortfall in the supply of nutrients to the body. Limb deformities are quite common in foals, these can be due to the position of the foetus in the uterus, and generally in this case the foal’s limbs straighten after a few days and further treatment is not required. Flexural deformity occurs mostly in the forelimbs in one or both legs and most commonly in well-grown yearlings. The fetlock and pastern joints become more upright and the fetlock starts to knuckle over. Angular limb deformity can be caused by a

Good nutrition and breeding practices will result in healthy foals

combination of trauma and nutritional imbalances. This means perhaps lunging of foals and yearlings, placing uneven and unnatural pressure on their limbs, long before they are fully matured, this can place pressure on one side of the Physis or growth plate causing one side to grow faster than the other. Through research we have discovered that Developmental Orthopaedic Disease (DOD) which includes OCD (Osteochondrosis), Cervical Vertebral malformation, Angular deformities, Contracted Tendons and Physitis (formally known as Ephyphisitis), can be caused by many factors, such as

genetic predisposition, management practises, disease and dietary influence. It is therefore very wise to seek professional advice before jumping onto any single D.O.D. bandwagon. OCD (impaired blood supply to cartilage delays conversion of cartilage to bone resulting in abnormal thick cartilage or joint surfaces, the cartilage is therefore only loosely attached to underlying bone and may become detached causing inflammation within joint) occurs particularly in young rapid growing individuals, accelerating a horse’s growth by overfeeding may increase the risk of OLD. continued page 9

The importance of protein in a foals diet from page 8 Generally the stifle and hock joints are effected and clinical signs of the disease usually become obvious in the first two years of growth. So in the case of OCD correct feeding will probably prevent this disease. Weanlings require almost twice the amount of protein than that of a mature horse. Correct nutrition means supplying your foal with right amount of water, protein, fibre, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and vitamins, a shortfall of any of these nutrients could lead to illness. Nutrients provide replacement molecules, provide energy and allow for growth. Our foal’s survival depends on the survival of cells. Approximately 70% of the body is water, it is vital, as it is involved in digestion, regulating body temperature, lubrication and metabolism. Water must be readily available. It is important to allow fresh clean water on a daily basis. Sufficient amounts of carbohydrates must be supplied to allow for normal growth rate, athletic ability and resistance to disease. Proteins, (chains of amino acids) are vital for our foal’s growth also and the 12 essential amino acids must be supplied by the diet. A deficiency of protein can cause a decrease in food intake, and the condition of the coat may be affected. On the other hand feeding too much protein

Our foal’s health, growth and survival depends on correct nutrition will mean the excess protein will be utilised as an energy source far less efficiently than carbohydrates or fat. Minerals and trace elements are also vital for growth and protection, as are vitamins. Feeding your foal is not very complicated, but it is important to remember that every foal and horse is different and they cannot be fed in the same way. Because individuality plays a big role in deciding what you will feed your foal, I do not agree with RDA recommendations, but, like many clinical biochemists and naturopaths I agree with Optimal Daily Allowances, this makes far more sense,

Cushings & EMS the herbal solution By VICTORIA FERGUSON Increasingly horses and ponies are being diagnosed with Cushings Disease or Equine Metabolic Syndrome. They are different disorders. Pictured right is my Holsteiner gelding Fabio, showing the cresty neck and fat lumps each side of the tail, consistent with EMS, but blood tests showed that he did not have EMS, and he never had laminitis in his 17 years of life with me until he went to that big pasture in the sky. More on him later in this article. Cushings Disease According to Kentucky Equine, Cushings is caused by an enlargement in the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland. This condition leads to oversecretion of cortisol by the adrenal gland. Affected horses may show signs such as increased thirst and urination, loss of muscle mass, an increased susceptibility to infection and a long hair coat that doesn't shed normally. Laminitis is a common symptom as are hoof abscesses but that is usually in the later stages. EQUINE METABOLIC SYNDROME According to Kentucky Equine, most horses affected with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) are overweight and have abnormal fat deposits that include a cresty neck, fat around the tailhead that makes the tail look inset into the body, and fat pads around the shoulder, sheath, or udder. Horses with EMS gain or maintain weight with little feed. I add to that they invariably have exceptionally greedy appetites and have a chew rate about double that of a horse with a normal appetite. Laminitis is a common symptom especially associated with lush pasture growth in late spring and early summer. DIAGNOSIS Kentucky Equine says first rule out Cushings using the ACTH test, then test insulin and glucose levels. ACTH stands for Adrenocorticotropic Hormone which is elevated in horses with Cushings. They state that the ACTH test is not accurate for every horse so must assess physical symptoms as well. Seems like a no brainer to me - in the old days vets always used their eyes, hands and brains and often did not resort to tests. These days it seems to be round the other way. Glucose is elevated in suspected cases of EMS and sometimes in cases of Cushing's disease. Insulin - this hormone is elevated in cases of EMS. Fabio's glucose serum was very low, insulin within normal range, triglycerides also normal, so technically he didn't have EMS, but actually he did. ACTH levels were not tested as he had no symptoms of Cushings. Page 10

HERBAL TREATMENT FOR EMS & CUSHINGS I treated Fabio with a prescription of liquid herbal extracts to re-balance his endocrine system, also bitter liver herbs to help reduce his abberant appetite. This is how I treat all EMS horses together with a customised VF Natural Diet without any structural carbohydrates. This works extremely well to reduce fat deposits and balance appetite, which reduces the risk of laminitis. These days horses are often diagnosed with Cushings on the basis of a single blood test - either insulin or glucose levels, often without any consideration of the physical characteristics of the horse concerned, when the first test should be ACTH. This test is often offered free - a marketing hook to immediately put the horse on the common vet drug for this condition, which has a very narrow sphere of influence - only stimulating dopamine production. I have been successfully treating horses and ponies with Cushings disease for many years. The function of the pituitary gland is specifically targeted with adaptogenic herbs and most importantly the specific symptoms being experienced by the individual, are treated with appropriate herbs. Recently one of my clients started herbal treatment with their gelding who had sudden onset Cushings and who was diagnosed by the vet and placed on the drug. Unfortunately he had a bad reaction to it, becoming very lethargic, losing muscle

mass and lame in one leg. After 10 days on the herbal treatment, he had regained his appetite and energy and wasn't lame. Even I got pretty excited about that response, but it is a condition which does require ongoing treatment, as it can only be managed and not cured. Holistic herbal treatments customised to each horse's individual requirements may be and old fashioned idea, but it works. To book a consultation go to ‌ www.victoriaferguson.com.au/contact

Obtain an evidence based, scientific, diagnosis! By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

Extensive testing may be needed to diagnose an equine problem properly as strong as that between a parent and their child, and almost every owner will do anything to provide the best for their horse. Unfortunately, horses are an extremely expensive and resource intensive animal to care for and in many cases, the human simply cannot afford to provide the absolute best. That being said, I am always amazed as to the extent of the sacrifices many people make. If we accept that all owners only want the very best for their

horse, then the basic fundamental that we all have to be aware of, is that if the animal has a problem, there is one way, and one way only, that we can provide the best possible care and that is to be absolutely certain of what the exact problem is. This can only possibly be achieved by obtaining an evidence-based, scientific, diagnosis! This is where the problem of finance becomes a factor as this process can be very expensive. In theory, in an ideal world, the person best able to provide this exact diagnosis should be the veterinary surgeon as they have spent five very tough years at university learning everything there is to know about the health, well being and husbandry of the horse. They have been taught to be "problem solvers" and it is impossible to objectively solve any problem if we do not know what the exact problem is. My training was over 50 years ago. Nothing in the basic fundamentals of how to perform a proper and thorough examination of a situation has changed and today's under-graduates still receive exactly the same principles of problem solving. The first step is to define exactly what the owner's perception of the problem is and then the examiner goes through the process of obtaining a very detailed and comprehensive history of what has been happening and what has been the management of the animal in the past. This can be the most important part of the assessment as many clues can be obtained. The next phase is the actual clinical examination of the animal. In this process, the veterinarian has been trained into how to assess each and every body sys-

When I went to veterinary school, as we entered our clinical years, it was suggested to us that "80% of everything we look at will almost certainly get better through natural healing powers, 10% will either die or never return to function, and there is a 10% range of cases where veterinary intervention and expertise will make a significant difference ". This is perhaps a little cynical and tongue in cheek but the reality is that it is really fairly close to the truth. I have been fortunate enough to spend the best part of the last 50 years working in the horse industry as an equine veterinarian and what a wonderful career path it has been. Over the years I have met many people who own, train, or manage horses and to me, the most gratifying part of being involved is the unbelievable bond that universally develops between the human and the horse. In nearly every case, it could be said the horse was as important as any family member. The emotional bond between an owner and their horse is usually

tem and how they interact with each other. Signs and symptoms are assessed and classified as to either being normal or abnormal and eventually a bank of factual information is accumulated. In nearly all cases, these facts can then point to some other forms of much more sophisticated testing modalities, (x-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, laboratory testing, etc.), each providing more and more evidence and facts. Throughout this process, the examiner is formulating a list of possible differentials and gradually eliminating them based on new evidence, until ultimately we arrive at a confirmed diagnosis. So, two important factors come into play. The first, and often most critical, is cost. Now, there is not really one person on the planet who is not looking for the "best price", and the cheapest and simplest way of doing things. This is a fundamental feature of human nature. But it is also very true that "We get what we pay for". The second critical factor is the experience and individual expertise of the person doing the examination, and this can be a very telling reality. Sufficient to say that the selection of who is to perform the examination is critically important, the choice is up to the owner, and the criteria on which to make that selection are obviously wide and varied and I am not going to go into that area. Ultimately, the pathway to follow probably depends on the "seriousness" of the problem. In my opening statement, I claimed that "80% of most problems will probably get better no matter what is done", and it is this fact that has allowed the exponential explosion of the plethora of lay service providers that flourish in the equine industry. They offer an easier, cheaper and far less complicated or invasive "solution' to the horse owner, and because of the 80 rule, has a very high success rate. This success is usually either because there was never a real problem in the first place, or nature and the passage of time solved the issue. Such "success" invariably impresses the owner and word of mouth enhances the reputation of the provider and the cycle perpetuates. continued page 13

The Horse Report

What’s wrong with your horse - ask your vet  From page 12 That is the way of the world and so be it. The horse world is fascinating and I see two very common scenarios that help the proliferation of non evidence based medicine. The first is in racing, and here the simple problem is that the horse simply cannot run fast enough. Everyone lives in hope and so much money, time, and effort is spent attempting to make winners out of cart horses, (I might say the veterinary profession is also often involved in this fruitless exercise). The second is in performance horses and here unfortunately the rider simply does not have the skill level to get the horse to perform. Rather than accept this as reality, most riders will spend an inordinate amount of time and effort attempting to find out what is wrong with the horse that will miraculously solve the issue. Surely a much better and efficient way of dealing with any issue with a horse is to seek the help of a properly trained professional charged with the responsibility of achieving a correct and confirmed diagnosis of exactly what the problem is. This can only be achieved via a comprehensive examination. We were also made aware at veterinary school of a critical second principle to be very much aware of, and that is "That rare things occur rarely, and common things occur commonly". This should be fundamental in any situation and the examiner should focus on looking

Diagnosis is the key to recovery

for the common cause of a problem rather than wasting a lot of time looking for some bizarre issue. This is where the experience of the practitioner can be very important and in many cases, the signs and symptoms can lead the examiner to arrive at a "probable" diagnosis based on the balance of probabilities, and in most of the 80% cases, "recovery" will occur. For the other 20%, a more comprehensive and expensive examination is necessary to establish a diagnosis that is beyond reasonable doubt. What I have found really amazing is the incredible turn around that almost universally happens in each situation where we finally arrive at a positive diagnosis. Miraculously the status of the case seems to immediately improve and the animal almost immediately seems "cured". I am sure this is simply the removal of all doubt and the confidence one obtains with knowledge.

I see two situations where a confirmed diagnosis is of unmeasurable value. The first is the unfortunate situation where the problem simply cannot be cured. Unfortunately this situation is relatively common in performance horses, where unlike other species; "usefulness" is dependent on the animal being "sound". At least now, the owner knows and can make informed decisions about the horse. Nowhere is this more important than in lameness cases. Many of these conditions are due to the conformation or biomechanics of the horse, or where there has been tissue degeneration to the point that "cure" will never happen. Many of these cases can be managed, particularly with corrective shoeing or medication, but these treatments are repetitive, expensive, and cannot be stopped as the problem has been determined to be incurable. Again, we can make an informed decision. The second situation is where the results of the examination have determined that there is actually nothing wrong with the horse. In this case, the so-called problem is perception by the owner, often behavioural or missmatch of the horse and rider's skills. I always regard this as a great outcome as once again, we can make informed and rational decisions about the management and future of the horse without endlessly persevering and "living in hope" The single most valuable tool in the management of any problem with a horse is to achieve a proper diagnosis.

Technyflex-sponsored riders continue to shine Technyflex-sponsored rider continue to shine on the sporting fields. Andrew Cooper has won the Equestrian Victoria Eventing Rider of the Year. "I can't take all the credit as there's a huge team behind me which makes it all possible! A huge shout out to you all - thank you,” Andrew said. "I'd also like to say huge congratulations to the hard working team at Tamborine Equestrian Group who ran the Qld 3DE. It was a great event, and for me a great taste of what Qld Eventing is like. "I had three lovely horses competing and they certainly didn't disappoint with their placings: Reduction 2nd CC14*-L; Manhattan 3rd CCI1*-L and Masterton NZ 4th CCI1*-L "And thanks to my amazing sponsors who keep the ponies looking and feeling the part. "Next year Maddie and I will be moving from Victoria to Queensland to begin a new venture. In the meantime we will stay in Balnarring, business will continue as normal and I'll be riding at the Adelaide 3-day-event in November."

Les Gilleard and Abbie McDonnell In these difficult drought-stricken times finding cattle to run a campdraft isn't easy but several events have taken place this year. Young drafter, Abbie McDonnell from Deepwater, NSW was able to compete at the Maclean Show Society draft, as well as the Big River campdraft held in Grafton NSW. Coming up is the Stockman's Challenge at the local Kyogle Ag Show and the Big River Stockman's Challenge. Abbie is sponsored by Technyflex Northern NSW in conjunction with Les Gilleard's Elite Horse Products. TFX Equine is a regular addition to the feeding programs of all Abbie's horses.

Emily Cuthbert and Sonny Emily Cuthbert, from Kialla in Victoria, recently went to the Mildura Horse Trials with Wayward Son, a.k.a. Sonny, her OTT Thoroughbred. "It was Sonny's first event and I just did the 50cm horse trials on him. He did a nice test, one rail showjumping and a clear cross country, I’m so proud of him,” Emily said. "I then took him with my other horse, Tom, to the Tatura Showjumpimg Classic. I did a 60cm clear on Sonny in the indoor and then one rail in the 7cm on the grass. I had some fun with Tom and took him in a few 1m classes and he was super. "Thank you Technyflex, both horses are feeling great, and they're so happy and full of life." The Queensland International 3-day-event hosted by the Tamborine Equestrian Group was a huge success with nearly 300 competitors attending from the east coast of Australia - TEG also attracted its highest number of spectators to date and the trade village just keeps on growing. Thanks to Technyflex for its contribution in making it a huge success. The winner of the TFX Best Performed Horse Ten Years and Over was Isabell Gilley's Tandarra Sweet Talk.

Brett Parbery - Inter A winner Boneo Park Spring CDI Brett Parbery and the Willinga Park horses were out in force at the recent Spring Dressage Championships at Boneo Park. He placed with Fangio and Fusion in novice and medium tests and won the Inter A and B on Sky Diamond. Brett's also busy with the Parbery Program. This is his flagship online training and mentoring program, providing an online platform for members across Australia to improve their scores, progress through the levels and, most importantly, find the most enjoyment and support in their sport. "Also, I'm very much looking forward to welcoming Dorothee Schneider to Australia. I'm a big fan of her riding and the way she goes about her business,” he said. "I'll be assisting in curating the masterclass and we have a lot of new, innovative ideas to bring to the show to assist Dorothee in getting her story across. I believe she's the next Isabell Werth." Dorothee will be featured on February 27 during Willinga Park's Dressage By The Sea event which will run from 22nd February 1st March 2020. And finally a feelgood story from Eva Jasinska from Equimates, the W.A. supplier of Technyflex: "When my mare was 24 I was told to put her down due to joint degeneration. I had her on joint injections but they were no longer helping much at all and the risks were too high. She was on 6 sachets of bute a day to keep her comfortable, which was unsustainable for health reasons. My friend gave me some Technyflex to try. I noticed a difference within five days. "A month later she was weaned off the bute and has been on Technyflex ever since. She's about to turn 33-years-old!" Eva Jasinska and her mare Celeste

The Horse Report Be part of the solution & use recycled products While chemically treated timber maintains its dominance as the standard material used for fence posts on most equine properties, there is a small but growing number of products made from other materials that are gaining a slice of the market share. Woodshield is one of those and has been gaining momentum since originating in 2004. Australian made innovation at its best, the Woodshield product is untreated timber encased in recycled plastic. You have the rigidity of the timber post core with the maintenance free, long life, polymer outer. The polymer itself is recovered from agricultural irrigation pipe and dripper tube so it's taking Ag waste away from land fill and putting it back out there in a useful way. And it ticks all the boxes as far as no painting, no splinters, no cracks, no termites, horses don't eat it and it lasts 4-5 times longer than standard treated timber posts - how good it that! Install it once and leave it alone. At the end of its life, it can be totally recycled with the poly going back into the plastic recycling scheme and the timber can be mulched or burnt on the spot - no chemicals. Visit www.woodshield.com.au and check them out on Facebook, Instagram etc. Lots of photos and lots of uses and organically certified so perfect for the vege garden.

Protein in the diet- are you feeding too much? By ANTOINETTE FOSTER

Dip Nut Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist

www.hiform.com.au

With Spring upon us, it is a great time to review the levels of protein in your horse’s diet. Protein in the horse's diet differs in their amino acid make up, this simply means that the description will be based on the amino acid content. It is also referred to as the quality of protein. We are going to examine the amounts of protein required in a horse's diet and the various sources available. Proteins are made up of amino acids; protein is required to receive the correct amount of amino acids in the horse's diet. These amino acids are distributed amongst the cells to be reassembled back into protein. There are many functions that protein serve in the equine body, some are required as structural members, some are enzymes and others are hormones. They are used as a transport vehicle for other molecules and are extremely important for the immune system; they can also be catabolised to produce energy. Amino acids are the building blocks of life and are critical for the horse's survival, protein becomes extremely important as a nutritional source daily. Proteins are made up of 20 amino acids; these amino acids have an amazing number of different proteins that can be constructed. There are as many as 400 several types of dipeptides and 8000 several types of tripeptides. The molecules of amino acids are quite small, and they are characterised by the amino acid group which is part of their structure, they also contain a carboxyl group. The most significant part of metabolism is the nitrogen part of the amino acid molecule, this part of the molecule is the one that gives amino acids their name. If there is a shortage of protein in the diet there will therefore be a shortage of nitrogen, this could be catastrophic for the horse. Nitrogen is not the only part of the amino acid needed in the metabolic process; there are many more roles that these molecules play. The amino acids include glycine, alanine, cysteine, serine, threonine, methionine,

Page 18

Overdoing protein in a horse’s diet can have adverse effects on its health. valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, histidine, proline, hydroxy proline, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine, hydroxyl lysine and arginine. These amino acids are generally not ingested as single nutrients they are ingested as part of the structure of proteins, amino acids released as proteins are being digested. To understand how the amino acids are joined to form protein is important, the figure below shows you how the amino acids are joined together to form a peptide bond. The peptide bond formation occurs in the hydroxyl group of one amino acid which is removed and hydrogen from the amino acid group of the second molecule is also removed. Together they form a molecule of water with the hydrogen. This leaves the nitrogen of one amino acid to bond to the carbon of the other amino acid. Two amino acids joined together are described as a dipeptide, three aminos are called a tripeptide, and many amino acids make up a poly peptide. An example of a tripeptide amino acid is glutathione. Digestion of protein begins in the stomach, the highly acidic stomach contents alter the ingested protein, and this process exposes the peptide bonds to the action of the digestive enzymes. Peptide bond hydrolysis is not an unintentional situation during protein digestion, it is

well-organised. These bonds must involve the amino acids tyrosine, phenylalanine or tryptophan; it is also thought that pepsin may have some effect on peptide bonds. The digestion of protein in the stomach is limited to hydrolysis of a small number of peptide bonds. Most of the remaining digestion of protein occurs in the duodenum and the upper jejunum, this is influenced by enzymes from the pancreas and the intestinal cells. It is also thought that some proteins may be absorbed intact across the intestinal wall. During the absorption process there are some amino acids that are absorbed more easily than others. Amino acids such as methionine, valine, leucine and isoleucine are absorbed at the fastest rate from the intestines. The second fastest absorption is lysine, histidine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and threonine. The rest of the amino acids are absorbed at a slower rate. The requirements of protein will certainly depend on the workload of the horse, the physiological state, age, body condition, and weight and maturity height for young growing horses. Protein feeds are naturally low in fibre and they can be an added source of energy but should never be relied on as being the main source. Soy-based products such as EquiSoy are a reliable source of protein and contain an excellent balance of amino acids. Products such as these are safe to feed and are around 40% protein. Some types of hay and pasture contain higher levels of protein than others; this will depend on where the hays are produced and the species of hay. Alfalfa (Lucerne) hay for example, can have protein as high as 23%. Grains naturally vary with their level of protein, barley being one of the highest available and oats being one of the lowest. Studies suggest that a working horse does not require elevated levels of protein as opposed to a horse that is in light work. Â continued page 19

Vital points to remember when feeding  From page 18 Work certainly does increase the need for protein as it is used as part of the energy requirement. Overfeeding protein is undesirable as it puts pressure on the removal of nitrogen from the horse's body and the increase in blood urea may be detrimental to the horse. Points to remember by overfeeding protein include, increased water requirements with an increased level of protein, urea levels will increase in the blood which can lead to a greater urea excretion into the gut, which may increase the risk of digestive disturbances. The final problem may be an increase in blood ammonia, this can cause many problems which include nerve irritability, and disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism. If there is an increase of ammonia excretion in the urine it may also lead to respiratory problems from a build up of ammonia in stabled horses. All types of feed contain protein, this includes grazing, hays, supplemented forms of protein and grains. It is very important to ensure that your horse has the correct intake of protein to suit his individual needs. A reliable source of protein can also assist with increasing weight in a poor horse. Since its development, veterinarians, nutritionists, and horse owners have used Henneke's system to regulate feed intake and exercise to address overweight horses, a condition that puts horses at risk for myriad physical ailments ranging from laminitis and founder to meta-

bolic conditions including diabetes. The scale also has become indispensable to animal welfare authorities, because it provides an objective way to identify malnourished horses. The most common scale used is the 1-5 scale as it is simplified compared to the 1-10 scale (See the diagram at the bottom of the page) Why horse owners over feed Horse owners should leave their personal ideas about appropriate equine body conditions at the stable door. Some horse owners seem to think that all quarter horses should be heavy and well covered, and others feel that Thoroughbreds should be leaner in body condition, however body condition is dependent on genetic predisposition, breed of horse, workload, type of feed and many, many more factors. Horses accumulate fat at varying rates in various locations of the body. Therefore, a solid Quarter Horse may seem to have good body weigh, but could be carrying excess fat at the ribs, neck, or tail head. There is a perception that horses should be heavy, however this is extremely unhealthy, just as it is for humans and can lead to many serious health issues. Fat located at the neck tends to be very hard, forming the term cresty neck. Fat at the withers will also feel hard. However, fat at the shoulders and the tail head will usually be pliable, and fat at the ribs will be soft, the size of the horse's stomach is usually not relevant to a

Overweight horse can have a number of problems ranging from fatigue to hormone issues and through to arthritis. horse who is in a malnutrition state. Feeding a balanced ration to suit the individual is essential, horses do not need to be fat, I like a horse to be well-covered, but so you can still feel the last three ribs easily. Good muscle tone is essential over the hindquarters. The horse should not have any pockets of fat, anywhere on the body. Overweight horses cannot perform efficiently and become fatigued more quickly. Overweight horses may also have hormone-related problems which can contribute to temperament changes and lethargy. Below is a picture of a horse

with an ideal body weight in my opinion. Having horse's too heavy places too much strain particularly on growing joints which can lead to joint conditions including an early onset of Arthritis. Some may think that the horse above is a healthy weight, what do you think? The answer is no this horse is not a healthy weight, this horse is overweight, and there are clear pockets of fat in the neck area, rump and flanks. For further advice on the correct level of protein your horse requires please contact us on 03 97756422 or email us on enq@hiform.com.au

Top class field to contest Dressage Championships For four days in October, horses and riders from most Australian States will go head-to-head aiming to take home a National Champion Trophy and Title. The Australian Dressage Championships will be held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre from Thursday, 17 October through to Sunday, 20 October 2019. These Championships include an international component with a CDI-W (FEI World Cup Qualifier), CDI-U25 (Grand Prix level competition for riders aged 16 to 25 years) and a CDI-Y (FEI Small Tour level for riders aged 16 to 21 years). Two hundred and sixty horses have entered in the event. The maximum number that can take part at each level under EA National Dressage Rules is 35 horse/rider combinations. Horses are ranked on their top three performances during the qualifying 12-month period and the top 35 are accepted to compete at each level. Extensive reserve lists exist at some levels. To make it into the top rankings is an achievement in itself. An exciting line-up of combina-

The Horse Report

Busting myths in regards to feeding horses Supplied by HiFORM There is plenty of advice circulating when it comes to feeding horses - unfortunately a lot of advice isn’t always accurate. Here are some of the more common ‘myths’ and why they are busted. MYTH: Protein is a good source of energy for mature horses. BUSTED: Of the three dietary energy sources-carbohydrates, fats and protein-protein is the hardest for horses to turn into energy. It is inefficiently utilized and produces more heat during metabolism than carbohydrates or fats. A feed high in protein may not be high in energy. Energy is what mature horses need most to perform at optimal levels. MYTH: The higher the crude protein content, the better the feed. BUSTED: Over the years, highpercentage crude protein feeds have been equated with quality because good quality proteins tend to be more expensive. Therefore, feeds containing high-quality proteins cost more and have been assumed to be better feeds for all horses. This is not always the case. The percentage of protein needed by an individual horse varies throughout his lifetime. While a high-protein feed may be best for a younger horse, it may not be the best feed for a mature horse that has high energy and low protein demands. The percentage of crude protein alone does not indicate the type or quality of the protein in a feed. Not all protein is created equal. Young horses consuming the inappropriate levels and types of proteins will not grow properly even when supplied with adequate energy. Bottom line, you need to match the right types and levels of protein to meet your horse's specific needs. MYTH: Feeds high in protein "cause" kidney damage. BUSTED: High-protein feeds do not cause kidney damage to healthy horses. Excess protein is excreted in the urine as urea. When a horse takes in more protein than he needs, he tends to urinate more and the urine is often stronger smelling. In the past this was equated with kidney stress. However, horses that have

Seek the facts when formulating your horse’s diet and avoid health issues down the track. developed liver or kidney disease from another cause may be put on protein-restricted diets to ease the workload on the compromised organs. And now some facts: FACT: Too much protein in the diet can cause health problems. Unlike fats and carbohydrates, horses do not store protein for later use. Excess protein metabolism results in the build-up of nitrogen end-products, such as ammonia and urea. A diet containing excess protein will increase the horse's water requirements and urine output as the ammonia and urea are flushed out of the body. Exposure to this strong urine can cause lung irritation and other airway problems. FACT: Protein requirements change throughout a horse's lifetime. Protein requirements are dependent on the age, health status, and work load of your horse. Growing and reproducing horses need the highest levels of protein in their diets, which makes sense because new tissue is being created to sustain growth. Hard-working horses are next in line as they are building new muscle and replacing damaged tissue on a regular basis. Sedentary and middle-aged horses that don't work very hard have the lowest requirements of protein. As they progress into their senior years, horses may need additional protein as the efficiency of their digestive tracts decreases. Horses with certain medical conditions may need more or less protein in their diets depending on their health issues.

FACT: The percent crude protein number on your feed tag is only one piece of the puzzle. The "percent crude protein" found on the labels of feeds and supplements is a calculation of the nitrogen content of the product. Nitrogen is contained in the amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins. The word "crude" means that not all the protein reported by this number is digestible. It is estimated that between 2% - 5% of many common protein

sources are not absorbed. While the percent crude protein number is helpful, it should not be the sole piece of information used when choosing a feed or supplement for your horse. Crude protein does not tell you the source of protein contained in the feedstuff or the amino acid makeup of that protein. Percent crude protein is most useful when combined with information on the type of protein included in a product. As discussed in Protein Demystified, lysine is the first limiting amino acid in a horse's diet. Knowledge of the lysine content of a protein source is necessary when properly balancing your horse's diet. Some labels will include the percentage of lysine found in a product. Knowing what ingredients are good sources of lysine and identifying those sources in the ingredient list will also help you make an informed decision. Since all horses are individuals, we recommend you consult with your veterinarian or trained equine nutritionist to fine-tune the percentage of protein required in your horse's diet.

The Horse Report

The ideals of Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance A Legacy of Legends is a continuation of what Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance taught and understood about horses. While Ray is widely considered the greatest and most influential horseman of all time, he was always quick to give the credit to Tom. “Tom told the horse’s side of the story,” Ray said in an interview not long after Tom’s passing. “He knew what the horse was going to do before the horse knew it. I’d never seen anything like it and I’ve never met anyone since who understands the horse the way Tom did. He had something truly special.” Together Tom and Ray changed the horse world, but with the loss of Ray in 2009 there were concerns about how to preserve their legacy and assure that the extraordinary gift they had given us was passed on. The Legacy of Legends annual gathering brings together some of today’s best examples of what Tom and Ray started, and through our scholarship program we are certain the learning will continue and the lessons these two legends taught will never be forgotten. Like Tom and Ray, who were always thinking about how they might make it easier or better for the horse, A Legacy of Legends offers others the encouragement and understanding to keep searching too. The 2020 Australian gathering will be held in Tamworth from January 3 to 5 at the Australian Equine & Livestock Event Centre. This years presenters include Buck Brannaman, Carolyn Hunt, Jaton Lord, Sarah Clifford, Anthony Desreaux and Brook Hazlett.

"Buck" Brannaman is a leading practitioner within the field of good horsemanship, which is a philosophy of working with

Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance horses based on the idea of working with the horse's nature, using an understanding of how horses think and communicate to train the horse to accept humans and work confidently and responsively with them. One of Brannaman's stated goals is to make the animal feel safe and secure around humans so that the horse and rider can achieve a true union. Buck was for many years a disciple of Ray Hunt and also inspired by Tom and Bill Dorrance. Buck now teaches clinics worldwide. Carolyn Hunt, the Widow of the Legendary Ray Hunt Carolyn is a remarkable accomplish Horsewoman in her own right, travelling and support Ray on the road for years Carolyn now spends her time dedicated to carrying on the work of her late husband Ray and Tom Dorrance with the Legacy Foundation.

Jaton Hunt is the grandson of Ray and Carolyn Hunt and had the opportunity to travel with them and ride under Ray’s tutelage from an early age. When he wasn’t with the Hunts, Jaton worked on the family ranch in southern Idaho, competed in High School Rodeo and started

colts for the ranch along with outside clients. After finishing school he combined his practical ranch experience and the valuable lessons learned from his grandfather and went to work for Reined Cow Horse trainers Annie Reynolds and Doug Williamson. From there he branched out on his own with Jaton Lord Performance Horses. Among the futurity horses he now has in training are several colts started at the Legacy of Legends Gathering. In addition to training and competing, Jaton also conducts a limited number of clinics with his grandmother, Carolyn Hunt.

Sarah Clifford work for wellknown clinician Joe Wolter in Carmel Valley, California. Joe introduced Sarah to the Dorrance brothers, Bill and Tom, and to Ray Hunt, and Sarah was lucky enough to work with all three. Sarah trains, coaches non-professional riders and competes. Sarah also travels, judging ranch versatility competitions and giving clinics.

Anthony Desreaux grew up on large cattle stations in outback Australia, where old training traditions meant he rode a lot of

broncs in his early years. But it wasn’t until he was exposed to Ray Hunt that things really began to change for Anthony. After a 2008 clinic in Parowan Utah, Ray and Carolyn invited Anthony to their place in Texas, where he spent a month riding under Ray’s tutelage. Ray opened a whole new world up for Anthony and he returned to Australia inspired and full of new insights that caused him to see his horsemanship in an entirely new light. “Ray told me to sing my own song and that the more horses I rode, the more I’d learn from the horse. He was so right and his sayings are still ring true to me on a daily basis.”

Brook Hazlett has been starting and training outside horses for the last 20 years. He lives in Swan Hill, Victoria where he and his family own and run “Tallara,” an irrigation farm producing quality hay. Brook has a reputation for being a genuine horseman who produces horses that are confident and willing partners for their riders, regardless of the discipline. Brook travelled with Ray and Carolyn for several months in 2002 during their U.S. clinic tour and again in 2004 during a tour to Spain. Brook later spent time at Ray and Carolyn’s Era, Texas ranch training cutting horses. Brook feels very fortunate to have had this time with Ray and to witness Ray’s dedication to horses and his genuine desire to communicate with those willing to open themselves up to his teachings. Brook often reflects on something Ray said or did, and is thankful he has these invaluable slices of wisdom to recall and inject into his daily work with horses and in the clinics he conducts. The Horse Report

Starting horses and setting them up for success By TANJA KRAUS Starting horses under saddle and setting them up for success I have been doing a colt start for the past few weeks. (Colt start is an American term meaning starting a horse under saddle, it includes colts, geldings, fillies and mares. I prefer to use the term 'colt start' instead of 'horse breaking'). It got me to thinking about setting the horses up for success when we start them under saddle and putting in there from the start, our expectation of their confidence and behavior as a ridden horse. I don't start horses like most people do, and one of the things I am most critical on, Is that I prevent the horse from bucking, or having undesirable behavior as much as I possibly can. When I tell people that, they tend to get a glint in their eye, the hint of a smirk on the lips, and usually some sort of comment about me not wanting to ride the buck, or not being able to. And sure, while I'm no longer my 'I can ride anything' teenage self, I certainly have no issue in riding a few bumpy moments if and when the time comes - but my job as a colt starter in my opinion, is to prevent that from happening - not for my benefit, but for the horses. I firmly believe that a horse's first experiences set him up for the rest of his ridden life. I was talking to Dr Robert Miller last time I was in the USA and he was talking about horses having amazing memories, and why it was so important that their first impression of something was positive. Yes you can 'train over' a negative experience, but it will always be in there, and when a horse is in flight mode, or in a panic situation, it is often the first experience that they will go back to, as it is so strong. When you apply this to starting a horse under saddle, and you see how many horses are reactive when they first feel the saddle, or the girth, or the rider, it is no wonder that we see so many troubled horses under saddle. So that's why I start horses the way I do - with a lot of time invested in not only 'no bucking' but no undesirable behavior, and most importantly, the best experience possible for the horse. If their first rides are positive and confident experiences, you have a pretty nice horse to go on with as your ridden partner. This approach can take longer than most, which can be frustrating for some, however in my experience, the time is taken to ensure the horse is confident with the saddle, girth and rider, then translates to a horse who is confident

A horse's first experiences set him up for the rest of his ridden life, so make then good ones. and able to listen as his training progresses - which makes the ongoing training easier, and in turn 'faster'. We seem to have an attitude towards horses where we believe we should be able to put the saddle on, cinch it up, and if they react they are being difficult and we need to 'buck them out'. This is still unfortunately common practice, and in a lot of cases, an accepted and expected part of the starting (breaking in) process. I still see horses that are reactive and 'cold backed' or 'humpy' when the saddle goes on - months and even years after they have been started. This is unnecessary and gives the trainer or rider a tougher job when it comes to ongoing training, as we first need to deal with 'foundation issues' instead of warming up and getting into training. We need to understand that any reactivity on the horses part is simply a lack of understanding, or fear, reaction to the discomfort of something they haven't experienced before, or genuine pain from an ill-fitting saddle. It is our job to help the horse understand that he is 'ok'. Our investment in a quality start to a horse's ridden career will carry him through his ridden lifetime. Tanja Kraus

The Horse Report 2019 NORTH COAST NATIONAL SHOW The Show will go on! That is a mantra that rings across the ag show movement and after the cancellation of the 2018 ring events at the North Coast National Lismore Show this year’s show will go on. Despite an almost perfect run up to the 2018 show, the hopes and aspirations of equestrian riders from across the Northern Rivers was dashed when in the five days leading up to the show, 20 times the average October rainfall poured down. The Show Society at Lismore tried everything - special sand was brought in, speedway equipment was used to dry the track, over 20 loads of gravel was delivered - all for nothing. This year, now in its 134th year, The North Coast National - Lismore Show will go on. Show Secretary, Mark Bailey said the ring committee has worked hard all year to put in place measures that will safeguard the show from an adverse weather situation. "We have put in ringside drainage and really improved the ring drainage itself" Mr Bailey said. With the North Coast National attracting one of the largest equestrian crowds in the State, Chief Steward Peter Engels expects a high standard of competition. "Events at the North Coast National always attract a great talented crowd and notwithstanding the harsh conditions at the moment we expect this year to be as good as any if not better" he said. The show runs for three days from October 17-19 and has a great program planned for horse enthusiasts in centre ring. Thursday’s program includes breed classes for Thoroughbreds Standardbred, ANSA, Arabian, Riding Pony, Australian Saddle Ponies, Unregistered Ponies Stud Book, Australian, Dartmoor, Shetland, Welsh, Palominos, Appaloosa, Paints, Pintos, Buckskins, Quarter Horses , Baroque, Waler and Warmbloods. Friday program will cater for Maiden,Novice, Intermediate & District Hack Classes & offers an Australian Stock Horse Feature show, plus the Northern NSW Champion of Champions final with Prize Money of $250.00 Then Saturday is the Open Hacks, Hunter Hacks and rider classes the Off the Track Classes plus Miniature, Heavy Horse Gypsy Cobb and Harness and Showjumping in run over all three days - with $1000 for the Grand Prix Showjumping Event And away from the Horse Ring, the show boasts one of the largest agricultural displays in the regional show circuit. The Beef and Dairy Competitions are some of the largest outside the Sydney Royals. "With over $140,000 spent on the entertainment budget this is a huge Show" Mr Bailey said. The highlight will be the Saturday evening rodeo and massive fireworks display. Check out all the action at www.northcoastnational.com.au
