American champion horseman and trainer Al Dunning will be bringing his knowledge Downunder to EQUITANA Sydney.

Be part of Al Dunning’s clinic/education sessions US champion horseman and trainer, Al Dunning, is one of the featured international clinicians at EQUITANA Sydney in November this year.

Over the years, Al developed his multi-faceted business with a focus on the development of champion horses and riders.

His training and competition expertise has elevated him to great success around the world. Al Dunning has earned the undisputed title of one of the world's greatest horse and rider trainers in all disciplines.

EQUITANA Sydney is pleased to offer a number of Australian riders the once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in the Al Dunning Horsemanship Clinic or his education sessions presented over the four days of the event.

The selection process involves completing the application form on the EQUITANA website at www.equitana.com.au/equitana-horsemanship-clinic-application and returning it to EQUITANA together with video footage, no later than Friday, September 13.

Suitable horses from each of the following categories will be selected for the clinic/education session participation: Young horse - Three year old horse that has had a few months of basic training and is ready for more advanced training Horse with specific training problem - please provide a short description of the problem Intermediate/Advanced horse - Four to five year old horse that has had a few of years of training; is competing or about to compete Well Advanced horse - Five year old plus horse that has been competing for a while Horses from any riding/sports disciplines are encouraged to submit an application.

Only six horses will be accepted into the clinic and one to two horses for each education session.

Shortlisted applicants will be notified by the end of September.

Disciplines come together for equestrian grand final EQUITANA Australia is proud to once again partner Equestrian Australia in hosting the most exciting equestrian competition in the country.

The Equestrian Grand Final presents a trio of finals that sees not only the cream of Australian riders and horses in the disciplines of Dressage, Jumping and Exhibition Eventing come together to compete in one venue, but also delivers the highest prize money in the country for each of the three events - Dressage $26,000; Jumping $26,000; and Exhibition Eventing $20,000.

Dressage The CDI-W Grand Prix will be held on Friday, November 8 and the CDI-W Freestyle on Saturday, November 9.

Fifteen of the top rider and horse combination in the country will be invited to compete at EQUITANA. The selection of these combinations will be via a series of five qualifying competitions, which are held Australia-wide.

Jumping World Cup Qualifier Round one will be held on Thursday, November 7 and the finals on Friday, November 8.

Eighteen of Australia's best World Cup Jumping riders and horses will be invited to compete in these finals.

The selection of the combinations will be via a series of five qualifying event held around the country.

Exhibition Eventing This unique competition will be held on Friday, November 8.

From two qualifying events, the top four riders will automatically qualify for the finals.

Equestrian Australia then awards `wild card’ entries for the additional seven riders.

At EQUITANA Sydney this year however, there will be a significant change in the structure of Exhibition Eventing, as organisers are bringing this action packed contest indoors for the public’s enjoyment.

It is a unique opportunity to three demanding disciplines come together at the one venue.

Know when you mare is expected to foal One of the most stressful things about foaling is the nightly vigils to check your expectant mare, especially when you have to work the next day.

Anyone who has been in contact with foaling mares would know the story of “my mare waxed up today, she should foal very soon”.

The average gestation length in the mare ranges from 320 to 362 days. Most mares will foal within 330-345 days of successful breeding.

However, mares have successfully foaled with gestation lengths outside this range.

The mare will start to show signs days to weeks prior to foaling: •the udder will start to develop •vulva swells and lengthens •teats 'wax up' 1-4 days prior to foaling.

There are several products on the market that can help take the stress out of waiting for your foal to arrive Foaling predictor kits or foaling alarms can save you allot of sleepless nights and improve the chances of being there when your foal is born.

Foaling predictor test kits are simple to use, you take a small sample of your mare’s milk and mix it with distilled water.

Dip a test pad into the mixture, the pad will change colour.

You then match the pads colour to the six coloured squares on the chart.

If your pad matches the fourth square you are getting closer but unlikely that there will be a foal in the next 24 hours.

While the tests work very well, they are meant as an aid to good horse husbandry.

Foaling prediction tests are a fantastic aid to any breeders foaling kit and can be a great cure for lack of sleep during foaling season.

Foaling alarms let you know when your mare lays down in the foaling position so you can be there if assistance is needed The foaling alarm transmitter (pictured right) is non invasive only weighs 170g and fits on to any size standard halter and transmits a signal back to a base station when your mare lays down in the foaling position.

This is invaluable in evaluating what your mare is doing before dragging yourself out of bed.

Fortunately, the foaling process is uneventful for most mares, requiring little, if any, intervention.

Labor is divided into three stages: Stage one begins with the onset of contractions and generally lasts one to two hours.

Even in a normal delivery, the mare may stand up, lie down and roll several times in an effort to properly position the foal for delivery. During this phase, contractions move the foal through the cervix and into position in the birth canal. The fetal membranes (allantois) may become visible at the mare's vulva. When the sac breaks, signaled by a rush of fluid, stage one ends.

This rupture and rush of placental fluids may be confused with urination.

Stage two is the actual expulsion of the foal.

This phase moves relatively quickly. If it takes more than 30 minutes for the mare to deliver, there is most likely a problem.

Normal presentation of the foal resembles a diving position, with front feet first, one slightly ahead of the other, hooves down, followed closely by the nose, head, neck, shoulders and hindquarters.

Stage three labor begins after delivery and is the phase during which the afterbirth (placenta) is expelled. Most placentas are passed within one to three hours after the foal is delivered.

Hendra virus from an OH and S view There has been much said about Hendra virus and its impact on horses but for humans dealing with horses, a timely reminder coming into the warmer months has been issued by Biosecurity Queensland.

Hendra virus infection in humans is rare but it’s a serious disease, and has occurred following a high level of exposure to blood, tissues and body fluids (e.g. respiratory secretions) of an infected horse.

There is no evidence that Hendra virus can spread directly from flying foxes to humans.

Hendra virus can cause a range of clinical signs in horses.

It should be considered in any sick horse where the cause of illness is unknown and particularly where there is a rapid onset of illness, fever, increased heart rate and rapid deterioration associated with respiratory and/or neurological signs.

Risk The potential seriousness of Hendra virus requires that work, health and safety measures are implemented at workplaces where there is occupational contact with horses and their blood, tissues and body fluids.

Prevention A Hendra virus vaccine for horses is now available for use under permit by veterinarians.

The vaccine is the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses and provides a work health and safety and public health benefit.

Vaccination of horses is strongly encouraged and horse owners should discuss this with their veterinarian.

It is important to adopt good personal hygiene and biosecurity (animal disease control) measures as a standard work practice for all contact with horses and their blood, tissues and body fluids, regardless of their vaccination status.

For those working with horses, the following issues should be considered: Wash hands regularly using soap and water followed by hand drying, or use alcohol-based hand rub if no visible soiling.

Hands should be washed before eating and drinking, after contact with a horse and its blood, tissues and body fluids, after handling equipment contaminated with a horse’s body fluids, and after removing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Cover cuts and abrasions with a waterresistant dressing.

Maintain yards and stables in a clean and hygienic condition.

Clean and disinfect equipment that has been in contact with a horse¡¦s blood and body fluids.

Wear PPE appropriate for the level of contact with blood and body fluids.

Manage accidental contamination with horse blood and body fluids: - if blood, body fluids or excreta touches unprotected skin, the area should be washed

Working with possible Hendra virus infected horses requires all those connected to take precautions to minimise even the slightest risk of infection.

with soap and water as soon as possible.

Where water is not available, wipe the area clean and apply a waterless cleanser such as alcohol based hand rub - if the exposure involves a cut or puncture wound, gently encourage bleeding and then wash the area with soap and water.

- if eyes are contaminated, gently but thoroughly rinse open eyes with water or normal saline for at least 30 seconds - if body fluids get in the mouth, spit the fluid out and then rinse the mouth with water several times.

Do not allow visiting horse practitioners (e.g. farriers) to work on sick horses.

Remove horse feed and water containers from under trees, and place these under shelter.

Identify flowering and fruiting trees on the property, and remove horses from paddocks where flowering or fruiting trees are attracting flying foxes.

If it is not possible to remove horses from these paddocks, consider fencing (temporary or permanent) to restrict access to flowering or fruiting trees, or temporarily remove horses during peak flying fox activity (usually at dusk an during the night).

Plan ahead Develop a plan for responding to a potential case of Hendra virus infection, and train workers in the implementation of the plan.

The following issues should be considered: Isolate the sick horse from other horses, animals and people, and contact a veterinarian.

Avoid close contact with the sick horse where possible. If this is unavoidable, consider the horse’s blood and body fluids (e.g. respiratory secretions and urine) as potentially infectious and take the following precautions in addition to standard infection control practices: - cover cuts and abrasions - use PPE to protect clothing, exposed skin

and face from contact with the horse¡¦s blood and body fluids. This can include, dependent on the level of contact with the horse’s blood and body fluids, items such as overalls, disposable gloves, rubber boots, safety goggles or a face shield, and a disposable P2 respirator. Train workers in the correct use of PPE - make up a PPE kit and have this, as well as hand cleansers, disinfectant and waste disposal bags, readily available - after handling the horse, remove and dispose of PPE carefully to avoid contamination - perform hand hygiene immediately after contact with the sick horse and its blood and body fluids, after handling waste and used equipment and after removing PPE If the veterinarian suspects Hendra virus, continue to avoid close contact with the sick horse and other in-contact animals while waiting for the test results. If contact is unavoidable, take hygiene and PPE precautions, as discussed above.

Where possible, move horses that are under investigation for Hendra virus away from areas that can be accessed by the public.

Follow instructions for biosecurity and personal safety provided by your veterinarian or Biosecurity Queensland.

If the horse dies or is euthanased, inform the horse carcass disposal contactor of the Hendra virus risk.

Always consider Hendra virus as a possible cause of illness in horses.

Notify suspected Hendra virus cases by contacting Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. There is a legal obligation to notify.

Seek medical advice or ring Queensland Health 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) if you or a worker has had contact with a horse suspected or confirmed as being infected with Hendra virus.

Preparation is crucial in transporting a horse Transporting and traveling with a horse or pony is a common event for horse enthusiasts, whether it's floating your horse to a show or competition or taking a horse to the vet or farrier.

However, the transportation of a horse or pony is recommended to be done by someone who is familiar with traveling with a large trailer or goose neck.

This article offers some tips when transporting horses in horse floats, trucks or goosenecks.

Using a Horse Float 1 - Set up the trailer. Make sure that your trailer is correctly fitted and secured to your towing vehicle is well suited to towing the weight. Run a total safety check, including brake lights, tire pressure and the amount of gas in your tank. Make sure that a mobile phone, the horse's legal and medical documents and a map or directions are in the towing vehicle.

2 - Make your trailer look inviting to your horse. Horses are fundamentally claustrophobic and will rarely, if ever, walk into a small dark space. If you have a loading ramp, lower it and sprinkle some bedding over it to make it seem more familiar to your horse. Open wide all other doors and windows to let in as much light as possible. If

you can, try to put some hay in a place that is clearly visible to your horse from outside.

3 - Prepare your horse for the ride. Always use a breakaway-style halter with a protective head bumper, protect leg wraps with shipping boots. You can brush your horse but it is not necessary. If it is a hot day you may want to put fly spray on your horse so your horse doesn't stomp as much, minimising the possibilities of injuries. Blanket him if appropriate, keeping in mind that it could be significantly warmer in your trailer than it is outside. If you have windows in your trailer open them, but leave the screen up so the horse’s head is not out of the trailer. Be sure to stay calm throughout the process, as your horse will pick up on any stress.

4 - Loading your horse into the trailer. Lead the horse calmly up the ramp or up the step and into the individual chute. If the horse is

nervous, have a calm horse go before or even go in first yourself. The idea is to show the horse that the trailer is a safe, non-threatening environment. Always make sure the heavier horse or a horse traveling alone is on the driver’s side of the trailer. The second or empty space should be on the passenger’s side. If you have any further issues, consult your trainer or an experienced horse person.

5 - Secure your horse inside the trailer.

Close all doors and latch or lock them.

Double-check that there is no door or window that could swing out into a neighbouring lane. If your horse has a companion or you are nervous that the horse might move around during the journey, tie it to a secure hook inside your trailer designed for this use. If you prefer to leave our horse untied make sure your trailer is safe. Horses should never be able to touch noses while unsupervised in a trailer, this could cause a fight.

6 - Hit the road. Remember to try and avoid highways and to always drive at or slightly below the speed limit. Keep in mind that any decision you make could put your horse's and your lives at risk. It may help to have another driven in another car behind the trailer so the driver with out the trailer can change lanes behind you leaving you plenty of space to move around.

Plan ahead when taking horses on a road trip Using a Horse Truck 1 - Perform a safety check on the truck. You should ensure that the truck is registered and road legal. A specialised truck mechanic is able to inspect your vehicle, or you can get the vehicle inspected by the Roads and Traffic Authority. You can also do a basic safety check on the truck, you should check the following:-Break lights, Indicator lights, Tire pressure and tire tread, Gas or fuel, Water and any necessary fluid or oil 2 - Prepare the horse for the trip. Ensure that the horse is ready for the haul, many horses will baulk the first time they travel on a truck, as many are used to the common two and three horse floats. Keep everything familiar, by doing the same preparation procedures to what you would do with a horse float. In horse floats, they can become quite warm inside, and horses only require a light travel sheet, however, with trucks, many of them are not fully enclosed and can be quite drafty.

This means that a light sheet would probably suffice but be prepared by having a heavier rug available for when the weather cools down. Travel boots are essential as the ramps or tail gate of a truck is much steeper and larger than a common horse float, if a horse was to slip off the edge, worse case scenario, then the horse would injure its legs. A breakaway halter is best suited for travelling; however, a good quality halter will suffice. You should however, make sure that the lead rope is good quality and longer than a normal lead. Because in trucks the tie up access loops will be in a different position to a float, (more often they will be higher) a longer lead is needed to ensure the safety and comfort of the horse.

3 - Prepare the truck for travel.

If you have a steep ramp or tail gate, then it will be necessary to put some wood shavings on the ramp to make it more inviting and so the horse doesn’t slip.

Most trucks will have open rails, or windows for ventilation, open these to make the truck brighter.

This will make it more inviting for the horse. Horses are easily

bribed by using a feed temptation. To temp stubborn or nervous horses, place a hay net or feed bucket on the floor of the truck. For horses that easily travel and float, simply have a hay net or feed bucket available for the trip. Because most trucks have mechanical ramp devices that can be quite loud and noisy,

problem during the trip, you can take them off and you will have less of a problem if you have to stop on the side of a road because the horses will be easy to handle. When tying them up, tie using a quick release knot, and make sure that each horse is calm and secure before loading the next horse.

Loading horses onto trucks presents new challenges as opposed to regular floats and requires careful pre-planning from lead ropes to deciding what order the horses are loaded on.

it is better to lower the ramp prior to the horse coming to the truck, this way, there is a lesser chance of the horse becoming agitated or nervous from the sound. Make sure that you have all necessary equipment for the trip, including:- Registration papers and horse documentation, a first aid kit for both humans and horses, a mobile or cell phone, a torch, spare tyre, mechanical equipment, such as jack, wrench etc. As well as water and food for both parties.

4 - Load the horse on to the trailer. Take into consideration, that many trucks don’t have spacers of dividers and multiple horses should be happy to share the close proximity of each other. If you have a horse that is green to traveling, load an experienced and gentle horse first, the greener horse will get confidence from the first horse, and will be less likely to baulk or become agitated. If you have only green travellers, ensure that the greenest horse goes on first, as if a horse gets agitated, it may spark a chain reaction amongst the other horses. If travelling with multiple horses, load them as normal but try putting the easier to handle horses towards the rear, if there should be a

If you are travelling for a short time, then this will probably be the case but if you plan to travel for longer than two hours, then it is best to plan for stops along the way. The horses will probably be ok, but if you become tired you may be putting you and your horses in danger. Plan your stops, and if you are going to a show, allow extra time for stops or breaks. If your are travelling extreme distances, make sure that you let your horses off the truck and walk them around, like humans, they need blood flow to the legs and body.

INITIAL STABLE SET UP 1. Clean out all old bedding to prepare stable for introduction of ekwizorb.

A healthy liver means a happy horse

By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist The liver, whilst not one of the most glamorous organs of the body, is the largest and the most fascinating.

Generally it is other organs that seem to be of more importance.

Liver dysfunction can cause crankiness and irritability and can also cause lethargy in horses.

Symptoms of liver dysfunction can include poor skin and coat condition, constipation, diarrhoea and anaemia.

Looking after liver function can solve many health issues. The liver performs some 22 primary functions out of a total of around 2000 from one body organ!

It is very rare these days to find horses that do not have some concerns regarding liver function; this is due to the ever changing lifestyles and demands on owners and the increased stress this in turn gives our horses.

The other aspect of concern is incorrect feeding, as the liver is associated with bowel function, digestion and the clearing of toxins from the body.

Contaminated feed from the non-regulated feed industry is another concern and the use of by-products in certain feeds increase the risk of liver disease or dysfunction.

The onslaught of environmental pollution, nutrient deficiencies and over processed or poor forms of feed all contribute to the risk and can accelerate the damage.

Liver dysfunction can also cause loss of appetite in some horses. A balanced diet is absolutely essential for your horse's health and wellbeing and good liver function.

The liver detoxifies the blood stream by degrading various hormones no longer required.

It also breaks down proteins into sugars and fats for tissue repair or energy and acts as a storehouse of vitamins and secretes serum proteins such as albumins (vital for the

removal of tissue waste), alpha-globulins, pro-thrombin (for proper clotting of blood), serum cholesterol and blood glucose.

Other functions include storage of various metabolites (such as glycogen, proteins and fat) and the transformation of various compounds into others as fats, etc, and carbohydrates (or vice versa), and the formation of bile. A liver that is not supplied with enough nutrients cannot produce bile of the proper PH, and without this bile, efficient digestion and excretion are not possible.

There are a number of nutrients including methionine, choline and inositol that can restore liver function and will ensure that uric acid is converted to urine.

These are just some of the nutrients used in products like the LivaAid. Supporting the horse's body with powerful antioxidants is also very important.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detox To ensure your horse’s liver function is at its optimum, Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detox is of enormous importance.

Phase 1 liver detoxification profile.

Drugs, metals and hormones are transformed in this process into reactive bioactive compounds. Up-regulation of this process can lead to the accumulation of these metabolites.

Phase II liver detoxification profile.

Metabolites from Phase I liver detoxification will be transformed into water soluble compounds and then excreted in urine.

This process depends on a large antioxidant capacity. Down regulation of phase II liver detoxification, leads to an accumulation of toxic metabolites. This in turn increases oxidative stress.

Polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes coding for a particular enzyme can increase or, more commonly, decrease the activity of that enzyme. Both increased and decreased activity may be harmful.

Increased phase I clearance without increased clearance in Phase II can lead to the formation of toxic intermediates that may be more toxic than the original toxin in

the first place.

Decreased Phase I clearance will cause toxic accumulation in the body. Adverse reactions to drugs are often due to a decreased capacity for clearing them from the body.

General Therapies to Improve Detoxification: Nutrients that generally improve Phase I detoxification and as well improve the efficiency of Phase II conjugation can be recommended. Garlic, soy, grape seed extract, green tea, and many herbs and spices like milk thistle etc.

Catechol-Omethyl transferase is the enzyme primarily responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine and N-acetyl Transferase detoxifies many environmental toxins.

Polymorphisms can result in slower than normal or faster than normal addition of an acetyl group to these toxins.

Slow acetylators have a build up of toxins in the system and rapid acetylators add acetyl groups so rapidly that they make mistakes in the process.

Both slow and rapid acetylators are at increased risk for toxic overload if they are exposed to environmental toxins.

If the toxin exposure is reduced, the risk is reduced.

Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) detoxifies many water-soluble environmental toxins, including many solvents, herbicides, fungicides, lipid peroxides, and heavy metals (e.g.,mercury, cadmium, and lead).

The various forms of GST, work together to eliminate toxins. Decreased glutathione conjugation capacity may increase toxic burden and increase oxidative stress.

Superoxide Dismutase is an enzyme that protects cells from increased oxidative stress and free radical damage to cell structures like membranes, mitochondria, DNA, and proteins.

Young Australians win Nations Cup The Inter Pacific Exchange is held bi-annually and is contested between Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, United States and Canada.

Teams participate in a two week tour and compete in a scrambled One Day Event and a Nations Cup Showjumping Event.

The Inter Pacific Exchange which began in Brisbane on Friday, July 26, concluded with an action packed Nations Cup competition held at Yandina over the weekend of August 10-11.

Australia and New Zealand battled it out for first place over three rounds, time was the deciding factor with Australia just a fraction over one second in front of the Kiwis to take out the Nations Cup. USA placed third, Hong Kong fourth and Canada fifth.

Favourite parts of the trip for participants included a trip to Fraser Island and the Green Ropes challenge at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast.

Highlights of the program for NSW Pony Club representative, Brandon Beneke, from The Vines Pony Club included, meeting and making friends with riders from around the world and representing Australia in an International competition.

Brandon is the current Club Captain of The Vines Pony Club and is a successful rider in a variety of disciplines including polo cross, mounted games and showjumping.

Team looks to rally support for World Equestrian Games The countdown to the 2014 World Equestrian Games is well and truly on and the and the Australian hopefuls are really looking forward to them and want the country’s support along the way.

To get Australians to rally behind the team, 16 of Australia’s top athletes appear in a special poster which Australian equestrian fans are being encouraged to share with their friends via Facebook and Twitter.

Among the athletes who appear in the poster are Olympic gold medallists Andrew Hoy and Stuart Tinney, dual world driving champion Boyd Exell, Paralympic gold medallist Joann Formosa and Olympic silver medallist Shane Rose.

It’s been almost a year since Joann Formosa took her place atop the dais at the London 2012 Paralympic Games but the

memories haven’t faded for the Victorian-based rider.

“I remember London like it was yesterday and the journey since then has been unreal,” Joann said.

“Everyone has been really encouraging of me and I really hope I get another chance to represent my country.”

If Formosa is selected to represent Australia at next year’s Games, she’ll be aiming to double her London prize pool.

“I want two gold medals next time,” she said.

“London taught me that anything’s possible and now that I’ve tasted gold I know what I have to do to achieve it again.

“I’m in a much stronger position now than leading into London because I’ve had a chance to experience the competition and that’s really helped my confidence.”

Australian Paralympian Joann Formosa is excited about the World Equestrian Games next year in France.

Performance Director for Eventing, Prue Barrett said the eventing team’s preparations for next year’s Games are also on track.

At a test event at the venue in the Normandy region in France , team officials and some of Australia’s national squad riders were given a chance to view the

facilities and experience the conditions that teams will encounter when the main event gets underway.

“Le Pin is a great venue and the facilities are looking great,” she said.

“A key observation for our team coming out of the event is the impact the cross country phase will have on the overall result.

“It’s going to be a long and hilly course that will really test the stamina and endurance of the horses.

“This has traditionally been the type of course that Australian combinations excel at.”

The 2013 Alstonville Allbreeds Spring Horse Spectacular The Big October Ride at Dayboro offers riders the opportunity to take in some spectacular country in South East Queensland.

Dayboro gears up for the Big October Ride The Dayboro Trailriders will be running their 15th annual horse trail riding event the ‘Big October Ride’ on Saturday, October 26.

Situated approximately 43 kilometres north west of Brisbane, Dayboro offers a rural retreat in spectacular countryside, ideal for trail riding.

Last year saw 210 horse and riders take part in a day of trail riding and evening of entertainment.

This year, the Dayboro Trailriders offer an all new three hours ride and a seven hour ride.

The ride will head out south and then east.

Changes this year will be the Friday and Saturday evening format. With permission from the Rural Fire Brigade, both evenings will be casual and relaxed around the campfire. A licenced bar will be operating both nights.

Saturday evening live entertainment or juke box kicks off at 7pm until midnight.

Ride fees are $50 for visitors or $35 for TRA members. Fees cover your camping, insurance, morning tea and lunch as well as Saturday night’s entertainment.

If you don’t ride but wish to be part of the evening it’s not a

problem - $10 at the door will get you in.

Both rides are non-competitive and leisurely paced. Participants need to bring their own horse and riding gear.

There is no age limit on either riders or horses; however both will need to be fit enough and competent to take part.

Riders 16 years and under will require a responsible adult or guardian.

Riders 18 years and under must wear an approved riding helmet.

Strictly no stallions, rigs or dogs.

It is recommended that all horses be shod or wear boots and wear a halter and lead rope.

Catering is definitely available across the weekend but only guaranteed if you pre book.

Pre nominations are preferred.

Vegetarian and gluten free can be arranged if booked early.

TRAC INTERSCHOOL CHALLENGE On the weekend of October 26 and 27, a major and unforgettable event will occur in the Wagga Wagga area.

That event is The Riverina Anglican College Interschool Equestrian Challenge Wagga Wagga.

The event has also secured the attendance of Joann Formosa, who was Australia’s Gold medal Winner in the Dressage at the London 2012 Para-Olympic games last year.

Joann will be judging at the event and then the couple (Joann and her winning horse, Worldwide PB) will deliver a repeat of her Gold medal routine on the Sunday after lunch.

This is one of a very few events of this kind to offer special needs children from the local RDA centres the chance to represent their respective schools in an interschool’s event This event will give local RDA kids not only the recognition they need, but also that they deserve.

With the addition of Joann Formosa attending the event, all children will have the chance to see what can be achieved through hard work and commitment, not only the RDA kids but able-bodied children as well.

Joann is a fantastic ambassador for the RDA and the Challenge is extremely proud and privileged to have her attend this event.

It is the TRAC Interschool committee’s belief that this year’s event will be the beginning of something really big for the children of the Riverina and will continue to grow and become a stronger event as each year passes.

This event is open to any school-aged child from Years 2 through to Year 12 from any school, either public or private ,from any state in Australia.

The event is an Equestrian Australia (a National Sporting governing body) based event with all Dressage, Jumping and Showmanship competitions run under EA rules.

The EA Interschool Challenges are extremely popular in both Queensland and Victoria and are becoming popular here in NSW as well, as the amount of competitions are growing in number each year.

Understanding bleeding from a horse’s nose

By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic All are aware that any form of spontaneous bleeding is of concern and usually is suggestive of some potentially serious underlying condition.

In the horse, one of the more common situations we see is blood trickling from the nose, often for no obvious apparent reason.

Yes, it is of concern and each case warrants investigation. It is a relatively common condition in racehorses and usually means either a prolonged spell or even a permanent bar from racing.

The more sedate pleasure horse usually does not suffer the same problems as racehorses but they also can have very serious underlying conditions.

If, and when ever, your horse is unfortunate enough to exhibit blood from the nostrils, you should immediately seek proper advice.

Epistaxis, or `Blood from the Nostrils’, is a relatively common occurrence in the pleasure horse.

Fortunately many of these cases are benign and minor but there are some very serious disease conditions that can occur and as always, early diagnosis and intervention can offer opportunity for successful treatment.

As mentioned earlier, racetrack bleeders are quite common and are a major issue for the horse. This syndrome is referred to as `EIPH’, (Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage). The condition is somewhat unique to racehorses and no one is really

sure exactly why this condition occurs in horses but they do have some physiological features that are not in other animals.

First and foremost, the horse has a very precise synchronisation of respiration and stride, particularly at the gallop.

Simplistically this means is that the horse completes one full breath cycle for each and every stride.

The horse breathes in as the horse lifts off and accelerates from the front lead leg and breathes out during deceleration of the limbs and landing.

This is all very closely timed and synchronised to allow maximum inspiration and intake of air and similarly maximum expiration and removal of `processed’ air.

Secondly, the horse is designed for flight as a means of defence and the heart rate has an enormous range from 40 at rest to well over 200 at maximal exercise.

This allows an enormous increase in cardiac output or blood flow to enhance the animal’s ability to run.

This also means an enormous increase in blood pressure, particularly in the lungs, and also, a natural form of `blood doping’ where very large volumes of blood stored in the spleen are injected into the system to increase the oxygen carrying capacity.

Some combination of all these factors, combined with some possible acquired problems such as over training stress or inflammatory respiratory diseases can result in massive capillary breakdown, usually in the upper lung lobes, and haemorrhage.

Most often this as seen as spontaneous blood coming from the nostrils as the horses warms down after exercise.

Obviously this is a very serious acute situation for the horse and racetrack stewards immediately bar the horse from future racing. This is usually for six months mandatory and most horses recover and race again.

If the horse bleeds a second time, the animal is barred from racing for life.

Almost always, the problem is associated with maximal exercise and these horses are perfectly suitable and useful for slower paced pursuits. Certainly we can see EIPH events associated with slower speeds but these are rare and usually settle with rest.

EIPH is common and we can usually presumptively diagnose this with the association with exercise.

Spontaneous nose bled in sedentary horses is a different matter and certainly warrants proper investigation.

Fortunately, the majority of these cases are innocuous and can be of little consequence.

They can occur after the horse has sustained some form of head trauma, often unknown to the owner.

There has been some bruising and damage in the nose or sinus and this can suddenly bleed.

These usually clear up and settle quickly.

Also, nosebleeds are commonly associated with upper respiratory virus infections and horses can have some minor bleeding just because the mucosal linings of the tract are inflamed.

There are a number of much more serious conditions.

Ethmoid Haematomas are not uncommon. These are a progressive benign growth in the ethmoid labyrinth in the upper nos-

trils and are very serious and need early diagnosis and intervention. We have had great success with major surgical removal but the earlier this is done, the better.

Commonly, these are injected with formalin with an aim to slow them down. They commonly regrow and get bigger.

We favour early surgery and then follow up injections to control any small re-growths. These haematomas are diagnosed by `scoping’ the horse, although a full series of x-rays is also recommended.

Cysts in the sinus and throat can also bleed and diagnosis can be a challenge but usually endoscopy and radiology will detect them.

Guttural Pouch Mycosis is fortunately very rare but is a very serious disease as this involves the carotid artery as it passes through the pouch. Advanced endoscopy is required for diagnosis. This rare condition requires immediate major surgery to correct.

I have tried to name most of the syndromes, hopefully this helps.

The Horse Report Karin Blignault tours Queensland Queensland equestrians are in for a treat in September when author and international dressage clinician Karin Blignault visits for the first time. Karin is an FEI level dressage rider with a background in Occupational Therapy. She offers riders of all levels a simple, scientifically based approach with a focus on achieving balance and harmony in horse and rider.

She will be holding clinics at Gatton, September 16-17, Toowoomba, September 20-22 and on the Gold Coast, September 24-26.

Karin’s method of teaching is based on sound principles of sports biomechanics as applied to horses as well as to riders. Sport science is logical and step by step. There is nothing vague in this teaching method and every concept is backed by these principles.

Communication is the back bone of riding. This method of teaching ensures that riders understand the concepts the first time they are taught and that the horses understand the riders instantly without ambiguity.

Three repetitions of the correct technique and timing establishes a new concept for both horse and rider. Learning is thus very fast. Learning to ride classically correct at a high level should not take long. If it does, there is something missing in the teaching process.

Karin believes that form follows function and therefore teaches rider coordination and body use rather than focusing on body position.

Riders learn to multi-task from the onset and this automatically leads to a correct posture on the horse. The art of riding is all about feel.

Karin focuses on teaching riders how to feel and then how to adjust instantly to what they feel. Learning through the teaching of body use, is extremely fast even for the less talented rider.

The movements are chunked into `bite size’ pieces. Each section is taught separately and when the rider can do it with ease, the pieces are put back together again.

Karin guarantees that the clinic riders will learn, no matter what their levels of riding. She is particularly interested in solving horse and rider problems and has never found a problem she cannot solve. She specialises in correcting mouth problems of pulling, hanging, resistance, lateral tightness and maintaining a steady 'on the bit' frame. Problems such as difficulty in stopping, moving forwards, incorrect canter leads and difficulty in lateral work are corrected immediately.

Following the principles of riding hands without legs and legs without hands adds to this easy learning for both horse and rider. It ensures that the horse does not receive two opposing messages.

Karin teaches riders of any level or background and is particularly interested in solving training and riding problems.

The following two photos were taken on the first and third lesson of this horse and rider. In photo A, the horse was extremely anxious and defensive in her mouth. The rider’s arms and hands were tight and her posting behind the movement.

Ribbleton’s focus is on helping to create a connection and approach with your horse that results in your horse wanting to work with you willingly.

Paulette Evans from Ribbleton said it doesn’t matter which discipline you come from be it dressage, jumping or pleasure, because no matter what you do with your horse everyone is looking to improve our connection.

“Many people have described my work as `relationship coaching’, that is helping you to get a better relationship with your horse,” she said.

Paulette utilises liberty and groundwork to help her understand the horse and owner and guide them to a better partnership.

This has given both Magali and Frédéric the opportunity to immerse themselves in the life of horses in a herd situation and discover how this information translates to the education of horses outside of the herd.

These learnings have taken Magali and Frédéric to the world stage in both artistic performing (they were the co-creators of Cavalia amongst many other shows) to world class dressage competition with Magali competing in International Level

Grand Prix Dressage.

In 2002 at the Grand Prix in Essen, Magali was runner-up.

At Essen in 2004, after Magali stunned the competition for a second time, the organiser asked her if they would do a liberty demonstration at the evening gala!

Ribbleton are very excited to be able to present an exclusive horse training experience of a life-time in France with Magali Delgado and Frédéric Pignon.

This will be the first time that Magali and Frédéric have working privately with such a small group.
