Dressage festival is biggest ever As the winner of the 2010 and the 2014 Equestrian Queensland Event of the Year Award, this year’s Horseland Queensland Festival of Dressage has mighty expectations to live up to. Now in its ninth year of bringing you a unique and spectacular day full of Dressage education, training and entertainment, we guarantee this year will be the biggest event on Australia’s equestrian event calendar. This year the Queensland Festival Of Dressage brings two brand new and exciting additions to the Festival - The Peter Horobin Interactive Equine Zone and the Mitavite Kids Carnival. The Peter Horobin Interactive Equine Zone will house a series of live, up close and personal demonstrations on a series of topical and ‘must know’ seminar presentations. With live demonstration horses inside an undercover mini arena, you’ll enjoy an exclusive look at Saddle Fit Diagnostics and Equine Anatomy with Peter Horobin himself. The Mitavite Kids Carnival under the Mitavite Big Top joins us this year and the young, and young-at-heart, equestrian enthusiasts will have a magical time. Show bags, the famous Mitavite Super Heroes, face painting, carnival games and prizes galore, and very special guests Kerri Grisham and Santiago, the stars of The Amazing Adventures of Amurath Santiago. The Main Arena will feature our Festival Master Class series with our guest international coach, Bjarne Elefsen. Presented by Pryde’s Easifeed, Bjarne’s Master Classes will demonstrate the training for starting the dressage horse, through to developing collection and the work for progressing towards FEI and Grand Prix. In addition to Bjarne, the Main Arena will showcase 12 ridden educational and entertainment demonstrations with live commentary from some of Australia’s leading equine professionals including Alistair
McLean and his much-awaited clinic on ‘Racetrack to Riding Horse’. Along with esteemed professionals presenting their expertise for you this year, such as Mattea Davidson, Jenny Gehrke, Gary Lung, and Rebecca Ashton - just to name a few - the program literally bursts from the seams with demonstrations on Tips for Riding the Hot Horse, How to Improve your Marks, How to Improve your Sitting Trot, and Tips for Training the Flying Changes. Alistair McLean will take you through the intriguing ‘Inside the Mind of the Horse’ and you’ll enjoy a first-hand look at the work involved in veterinary farriery with Dr Grant Garcia, understanding and managing equine maturity rates with Elizabeth Owens and Lesley Goff, plus so much more including Tips on Presentation and Rider Fitness. The always popular and visual spectacular of the Festival IHB Stallion Parade joins the action again, back with an incredible array of leading stallions on display with their service fees available via the silent auction. The silent auctions, raffles and prizes are the largest on offer at any equestrian event in Australia with literally thousands of dollars worth of items including the stallion services, saddles, bridle wear, tack and clothing for horse and rider. The fashion parade is promising to be yet another spectacular and there wil plenty of interest for shoppers at the massive trade village. Save the date and bring your friends to the Horseland Queensland Festival of Dressage on Saturday, September 19 at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture. Pre-paid tickets are available online at www.qlddressagefest.com

Long distance transport is stressful to some horses. Nervy horses shake and tremble, working themselves into a lather, and drip sweat, which can cause fatigue, and dehydration, particularly during hot weather. Travelling in cool weather or early morning reduces the chance of heat stress on horses. It is helpful to ensure that horses are given adequate electrolytes and fluids in hot weather. It is a good idea to check the skin by the “pinch test” to estimate the relative degree of dehydration at least two to three days before travelling. This allows sufficient time for absorption of the electrolytes, as well as the restoration of fluid balance. Ideally, horses should be offered water to drink every two to three hours during long trips in hot weather, and off-loaded every four to six hours for a walk and “green pick”, provided they are quiet and can be held safely on the lead. Alternatively, horses can be given half a biscuit of dampened good quality lucerne hay in a hay net, then this will relieve boredom, settle the horse and provide some additional moisture. Travelling at night is usually much cooler and longer spaces between rest stops can be made, whilst still providing relief from travelling and allow the animal to ‘stretch’ its legs. During hot weather, open the front vents in an enclosed trailer to improve air flow. Intake of dust must be avoided during the trip, as this can increase the risk of respiratory problems, and “travel sickness” on long journeys, particularly after competition. It is useful to provide shavings, sawdust or absorbent material on the floor, to soak up sweat dripped onto the floor and urine and moisture from droppings at the rear end. It will make it less slippery and reduce scrambling on the floor during cornering and stopping. If a horse is a particularly nervy traveller, or under hot conditions, it sweats and dehydrates during the trip, so electrolytes can be given over the tongue in the float before unloading. After trips of two hours or more, it is a good idea to take horses for a walk on a lead for five minutes or so to help them loosen up before stalling them, once settled in the stall, a drink of cool water can be offered to provided.

What’s New OZ GLIDE The Oz Glide concept is unique. It is the only hitch dampening system available in Australia that offers a smooth ride in both the tow vehicle and the trailer. The Oz Glide does this by significantly reducing the downward impact on a tow ball and absorbing shock and thereby delivering increased safety and comfort for the driver and passengers while reducing stress and leg fatigue to livestock during transport. With no other product available that meets Australian Design Rules, the Oz Glide will provide you with an assurance of a quality product which will enhance your towing experience while delivering increased safety.
Testimonial from Gillian Leigh I have been involved in equestrian activities for 13 years in Australia and many more in England. During this time I have had been floating horses to and from various events around the State using a variety of horse floats and towing vehicles. I am currently using a Toyota Landcruiser and a three-year-old JR Easy Traveller float (which weighs 1100kg empty and 2400kg when loaded with two horses). Over the years I have towed my horses on many different road surfaces and, although the float gives them a pretty comfortable ride, they would occasionally move about a bit over very uneven surfaces. (I have an infloat camera fitted so that I can see what the horses were up to in transit.) Oz Glide approached me recently and asked if I would agree to have device fitted to my horse float and tested by me, to see what I thought of the performance and if I could notice a change of any sort. After testing the Oz Glide unit for 19 weeks and approx 1,200 kilometres, my conclusion is that the horses are travelling more comfortably. I can see their feet as well as their heads with the float camera and they simply don’t move. One horse is particular used to be reluctant to load but now seems altogether happier both loading and travelling – now he actually dozes off. The horses arrive in better condition and more importantly for me, in a good mood! I believe that the ride inside the car is also slightly better. The difference is subtle but I’m sure that the device dampens the effect that the float tends to have on the car as well as vice versa. I fully support the Oz Glide device and I would recommend it to my colleagues in the industry and my friends. So simple but so clever. For further information and to see the Ozglide in action visit www.ozglide.com.au or contact Allan on 0438 637 828
ON-SITE TRAILER BEARING SERVICES With the show season well and truly in the swing of things, many competitors are making long journeys every weekend. It is important to check wheel bearings, suspension and brakes on a regular basis. Imagine having a bearing failure on the way to or home from an event. Usually most competitors travel on freeways - can you imagine seeing your wheel rolling past you and the axle of your float dragging on the road, horses panicking at the noise or the brakes locking on and creating a small fire. These are things that can happen if your wheel bearings fail. Matt Smith from Helensvale on the Gold Coast is offering a mobile on-site bearing repair and replacement service for floats to prevent such mishaps. For further information contact Matt on 0433 426 561

GLEISBERG CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Palomino. Imp German Riding Pony, Reg. Part Welsh, Saddlepony , ANSA Champ was imported late 2013. He has had a successful six months competing with Daniella Dierks in novice dressage, however his true value lies in his adaptability to be a true performance pony. I have always believed that in Australia we should be aiming to breed beautiful ponies that can turn their talents to any discipline. Gone are the days of stereo typing the dressage, show, jumping, pony club pony. We need to draw attention to the fact that we are now capable of breeding ponies that can compete in any of these disciplines..... And then compete at a Royal show and bring home a broad ribbon in a hunter ring the oen ring or breed ring. Champ has been recently gelded and is now my daughter Shilos performance pony. We are passionate to provide the opportunity for all of Australia to think outside the square and breed the 'super pony, Galloway or small hack with athletism looks and temperament to take on any obstacle and be competitive at the same time in any discipline you desire!

Is your mare in foal ? Did you know there is a urine test kit available to tell you if your mare is in foal? Wee Foal Checker also known as 'Weefoal120™' mare pregnancy tests will save you hundreds of dollars on vet fees and gives you the peace of mind of knowing if your mare is or is not in foal. Its very affordable and so easy to use. These mare pregnancy tests are a non-invasive, accurate and rapid test for diagnosing and monitoring pregnancy in your mare, from 110 days after mating through to 300 days. No blood sample required and you do not have to wait for days to get results back from a vet or lab.
Weefoal120™' mare pregnancy test kit
This mare pregnancy tests can be used on any breed of horse, donkey or even zebra. It is particularly appropriate for small horses where palpation per rectum or internal ultrasound scanning is risky or is not an option. The pregnancy test works by reading pregnancy hormone levels in your mare’s urine. The Wee-Foal-Checker analyses a few drops of your mare's urine for the presence of hormones associated with mare pregnancy. The hormones are excreted into urine where it can be detected by the test. This provides the breeder with a non-invasive means of diagnosing pregnancy status and monitoring foetal viability. The Wee-Foal-Checker mare pregnancy test involves just two simple steps. Firstly, dilute a few drops of your mare's urine with the diluting solution provided with the test. Secondly, add a few drops of the diluted urine to the test membrane enclosed in a plastic cassette. Wait 5 to 10 minutes. If a single red line forms on the test membrane, this indicates that your mare is pregnant. If 2 red lines form, this indicates that your mare is not pregnant. This Wee-Foal-Checker mare pregnancy test does not suffer the problem of 'false positive' diagnoses, often seen with other biochemical pregnancy tests, where mares that have lost their foal are still diagnosed as pregnant. In the event of foetal loss, production of the estrogenic steroid decreases rapidly to non-
pregnant levels, thereby resulting in a 'not pregnant' diagnosis with Wee-Foal-Checker. These tests have a 98% accuracy. WeeFoal and Wee-Foal-Checker provides peace of mind. Now it is easy to monitor the pregnancy status of your mare from 110 days after breeding right through to just before the expected time of foaling. It is prudent that your mare be re-tested five to seven months after first being diagnosed pregnant so that pregnancy status can be verified, and your mare managed accordingly. Wee-Foal-Checker has a shelf life of approximately 12 months and should be stored in a fridge. It is important to remove the test from the fridge a couple of hours before using the test. This mare pregnancy test is best performed at room temperature. To order Wee-Foal-Checker call us on (03)5342 2206 email: sales@foalguard.com or for more information visit www.foalguard.com

Hendra vaccine finally registered By DAVID LOVELL BVSC Finally the somewhat controversial Hendra vaccine has now been officially registered. Surely this will bring an end to much of the wholly unsubstantiated, ridiculous propaganda that seems to be the reason for being of a small but vocal minority of ill informed protagonists. I cannot possibly see how anyone can be anything but overjoyed to have a safe and reliable means available to protect themselves, their families, and their horses from what is an ever present, ubiquitous, and deadly threat to anyone involved with horses. The threat of Hendra is never going to disappear. Every day, animals and handlers, particularly in endemic areas, are playing Russian roulette whenever they, or even worse their children, interact with horses. Agreed, much progress has been made in the acquisition of knowledge about the epidemiology of how this virus exists and spreads in the environment, and we now know there are many steps we can take to minimise the risk. But, the only way anyone can be SURE that their horses are protected is to vaccinate, and maintain the immunity, of all the horses under their care. Before official registration, there could possibly be some remote jus-
now been officially been confirmed that a very effective immunity is established in vaccinated horses. Unfortunately, at this point in time, the official recognition is only confirmed for a period of six months. This is because of the extremely rigorous demands and costs for trials and acquisition of data to irrefutably prove beyond any doubt, that the immunity is maintained for 12 months. Anyone that understands the principles of vaccination and immunity in living creatures, combined with the assurances from the independent and credible scientists who are conducting the trials, have absolutely no doubt that any immunity that is so strong at six months, will be every bit as effective after 12 months, and who knows how much longer, and so official registration with a recommendation of boosters every 12 months, is just a matter of time. So, what are the implications of the now official registration of Hendra virus vaccine. The vaccine is a ”killed” vaccine. There is NO live virus in the product. It is identical to tetanus and strangles vaccine and there is no innate resistance to these products. The only difference is the zoonotic, or extremely dangerous risks to humans from exposure to a horse that contracts Hendra. This means that for any horse to be recognised as vaccinated, and hence “SAFE” to be able to freely mix in the community without exposing innocent bystanders to devastating consequences, there has to be some means of confirming that the horse has indeed been vaccinated. This is now why a registry on horses has to be maintained. For this registry to be “guaranteed” and accountable, there has to be some infallible way of ensuring that any animal included in the registry has in fact been vaccinated according to correct guidelines. Veterinary surgeons are registered also. Any incident of professional misconduct by a practitioner, could well mean that the veterinarian could lose their licence to practice. This is indeed a very secure means of ensuring that their conduct is accountable. Much better than relying on simply the word of an owner that the horse has been vaccinated. Therefore, the vaccine availability is restricted to veterinarians, and inclusion on the registry can only be done by a registered veterinary surgeon. This then means that any organisation or individual that wish to be able to confirm that any horse is vaccinated, can have absolute confidence in the integrity of the registry. continued page 23

The responsibility for protection ‰ From page 19 Work place health and safety demands by the community currently in place, dictate that any employer, person, or organisation must take whatever actions are in its power to assure maximum protection for workers, and in the case of event organisers, risks of exposure to any hazards or situations that could endanger, or inconvenience. Litigation processes are now so aggressive, intense, and uncompromising that demands of good governance for any individual or organisation dictate best practice processes must be in place. Now, with the availability of a safe and effective vaccine to prevent Hendra disease in horses, it has become mandatory for insistence that horses that employees are involved with, or participate in events, be vaccinated. This is best practice and the law will dictate that individuals that do not adhere to this will be liable The industry most exposed to Hendra disease is without the veterinary industry as the nature of the job mandates that veterinarians and their staff are very likely to be exposed to horses with Hendra disease. Very precise and quite reliable bio-security practices are now fully available, and certainly in the majority of cases, will be implemented. The problem with reliance on this, is that perfect vigilance is almost impossible. The situation will undoubtedly occur where either horses are seen in the very early stages of Hendra disease, and are not displaying typical symptoms, or more importantly, less severe or different presentations of the syndrome will be seen. It is inevitable that now there is a readily available vaccine, any veterinarian that exposes staff to horses that have not been vaccinated, and subse-

There is now a readily available registered vaccine for the Hendra Virus quently erupt into the disease, will have difficulty defending themselves against the charge of failure in implementing best practice standards. Because of this risk, many veterinarians are now going to develop practice policies of refusal to see animals that are not vaccinated. The onus of this responsibility for protection, will now inevitably fall back on the owner of the animal. THIS IS A DEADLY DISEASE that now can easily be prevented. Vaccination protocols that follow the initial
course of two primary doses, three –six weeks apart, followed by a booster six months later, and the follow up boosters, will ensure all stakeholders involved in the horse industry are protected.

The Horse Report
It’s not all about you - it’s about the horse By TANJA KRAUS I recently saw a question posted on an online forum, by a person wanting to put the first ride on their young horse. They have, followed a program, and have arrived at the point where they are confident that the horse is ready to get on. The question posed was about the rider’s preference of riding the horse in a large paddock, as opposed to in a round yard. The rider said that she trusted the horse enough to ride in an open area, and that she would feel more confident in an open space rather than the confines of the round yard. As someone who starts horses for a living, I have, many times felt that the horse was ready to get on, at what I consider 'inappropriate moments'. Sometimes you are out in an open area, or even in a dressage sized arena, or out and about, and you get this feeling 'I could get on you now'. And you, as the human feel that this would be completely fine but guess what - it is not about you, its about the horse. All the preparation we do, all the careful skills that we teach, all the body language that we read - is all about making sure that the horse is right for us to get on. And most of us probably think that this is about keeping the rider safe - yes, this is part of it, But, I consider it my responsibility to give that horse the best possible first, second, third - and keep going, rides of its life.
Preparation, skills that we teach, body language... its all about making sure that the horse is ready for the next step in training. We must understand that this is setting our horse up for the rest of his life . If we have a stack or a bad experience - generally we can get over it, if your horse has a stack, or a scare in those vital first weeks of riding - his association with a rider is fear. Yes you can help him get over it - but is he going to be as confident as he could have been if he didn't get scared ? Let me put it this way - when I learnt how to drive, I started driving an automatic car in a big paddock, around in circles. Then I progressed to a manual car, and mum would let me drive up driveways, and then we went onto quiet public roads, and finally when I started getting lessons my instructor took me onto busy roads and highways. If mum had thrown me straight
onto the highway, I probably would have caused a few accidents, and lost my confidence in driving. Much the same as your horse would lose confidence in being ridden, if he is thrown 'straight in the deep end'. Many of you may have horses that have been started for a long time - but this principal applies
to a lot of what we do with horses - next time you are teaching him something new, or doing something that gets him a little worried - remember - its not all about you. We have rider positions available at our Wauchope Clinic coming up on August 15 & 16! This clinic will cover our horsemanship from the ground up, ground skills to build respect and communication, and then we will look at creating harmony - from you to him and him to you. Ridden skills to encourage and help our horses to use their body properly when under saddle, to remain calm and confident when being ridden, and we will also cover rider position and biomechanics. No matter if you are beginner to advanced level, or your horse is beginner or advanced, you will achieve great things at this clinic. Bookings are essential - reply email at tanjakraus@gmail.com or phone 0412 592 033 if you have any further questions. Feel free to share with any friends who may be interested.

With great sadness we are offering our beautiful Galloway, Mickey for sale. Mickey is a very competitive small Galloway, always in the top placings, qualified Grand Nationals 2015. This is an opportunity to purchase a super galloway, that is still to reach his full potential. A Sensational mover, he is always a stand out in his class. Hardly shown this year due to his riders study commitments, he placed highly at the show Horse Council Classic, and is now wasted in the paddock. His show ring presence and attitude make him a stand out, and with his huge movement, Mickey is constantly one of WA’s best small galloways. Absolutely stunning in hand. To a very experienced show home only. Would be an outstanding pony dressage prospect, for a small adult or capable teenager.
Pony Club/Interschool/Pleasure/Jumping/Eventing "Woody" is a been there, much achieved pony who regularly attends pony club and has competed at many interschool events, two day events, show jumping days, state events and Tetrathlons. He is an absolute pleasure to take anywhere and you always know you'll come back in one piece with him after X-country. This pony has extensive experience and success in all phases being the previous winner of state show jump run offs 80cm. Excels competing at C grade and could take a capable child or adult to the very top. YouTube video is an old one from the previous owner but can easily supply other footage on request.

What’s New PONY DEALS Dixon Smith Equestrian is introducing Pony Deals, group buying power for individuals. Pony Deals uses group buying power to dramatically reduce prices on products. Dixon Smith sources the best equine products and negotiates the lowest price for larger quantities. The community can suggest products that they would like to buy. If there is enough interest it can become a Pony Deal. The deals go online for a short time at www.dixonsmith.com.au/ponydeals, the more people that join the deal the lower the price can be. To join a deal, simply purchase the deal with Pay Pal. You will only be charged once the deal has finished and for the lowest price the deal achieved. The more people that join the deal, the lower the price can be! Sharing links are provided on every deal page. You can cancel your purchase at any time before the deal finishes from your account page inside DixonSmith.com.au. Once the deal finishes your Pay Pal account will be charged at the lowest price the deal achieved and the goods will be shipped out to you ASAP. Don't forget to share the deal as much as you can. The more people that join the deal the cheaper it can be!
SAFE & FLEXIBLE PLASTIC HORSE FENCING Bounce Back ÂŽ horse fence is a great fencing option if you are serious about protecting the well-being and value of your livestock. The Bounce Back ÂŽ system has been engineered to provide the optimum balance between equine safety and containment. Rails are highly visible and have no sharp edges. Low profile brackets complement its smooth appearance and enhance protective qualities. Unlike traditional fencing systems, this fence will flex and return against low to medium level collision. In the case of severe impacts, Bounce Back ÂŽ is designed to reduce danger to livestock by stretching and cushioning impact. For further information visit fencing4horses.com.au
