Historic breed makes a comeback Supplied by SARAH GWILYM WHSA, Queensland Anzac Day is probably one of the most important days on the Waler Horse Society of Australia Inc. (WHSA) calendar. It's a day we celebrate our Walers’ history whilst remembering those who did not return both horse and human. This year some Queensland members and enthusiasts are coming together in Redcliffe to march proudly with their Walers in the Anzac Day parade on the April 25. The name 'Waler' is derived from the term 'New South Waler', a horse bred in NSW and Australia's first colony. It was coined as a term for colonial bred horses used both in Australia and as remounts for the British Army in India. Walers, through the flourishing remount trade, were sold to India from the 1840s to the 1940s and were supplied to the Australian Army for the Boer War and World War I, where their feats of endurance and courage became legendary. Mounted on their strong robust Walers, the Australians established an enviable reputation for their horses and horsemanship, with their exploits in South Africa during the Boer War. There it was realized that a horse with fast walk that went into an easy canter was the best type for the military, as equipment was not shaken off and distances were covered more

The Waler is known for its long striding walk and for its wonderful jumping ability, proven over obstacles in South Africa and World War I. World War I saw 121,324 horses sent overseas and the Light Horse again proved themselves with feats of endurance and bravery in the sands of the Middle East, establishing the Waler as perhaps the finest mount on the history of cavalry. One of the most courageous charges was that of the 4th and 12th Regiments at Beersheba, where after a full night march and a day's fighting with no water, they galloped across a burning plain at the entrenched and heavily armed Turks, win-

ning the day and the water of the wells of Beersheba. At home, Walers proved the ideal stockhorse but with the phasing out of the remount trade in the 1940s, ceased to be commercially bred. Many breeders destroyed their stock, however a few simply abandoned them to run wild in the great-unfenced backcountry. Within a seemingly short space of time, by the 1960s and on, the Waler, incredibly, had virtually disappeared on the domestic scene. The crusade to save them became the work of The Waler Horse Society of Australia Inc., which has since 1986, saved enough Walers to begin the Studbook.

The horse that opened up Australia with explorers, surveyors and settlers, carried our loads, worked our stock and bravely carried our ancestor into battle, now finally has a just and secure future, backed up by a Studbook. The Waler was originally bred to be a working horse and today they still do stock and harness work but they are also being recognised as excellent performers in the equine sporting arena and proving to be a good horse for any horse enthusiast. The versatility, speed and stamina of Walers make them very competitive in all forms of equine sport. There are Walers currently competing, and excelling, in Endurance, Dressage, Eventing and Western Sports. Also, with their kind temperament and loyal nature, Walers are ideal for youngsters to participate on at Pony Club and a good horse for inexperienced horse owners. Walers are also great for trail and recreational riding due to their loyal nature and ‘go all day’ stamina. This coming Anzac Day, Queensland WHSA members will be participating in marches in Gatton and the Lockyer Valley and also at Redcliffe north of Brisbane. The Horse Report Agreement reached over infectious disease levy Following the disastrous equine influenza outbreak of 2007, the Australian government and horse industry have finally reached agreement on a levy to fund the management of future outbreaks. The contentious issue has seen concerns raised by the equine industry on the levy’s economic impact while the federal govern-

ment has said it wouldn't pay for another outbreak unless the industry signed on. The agreement reached will see the government will pay for all costs associated with a future outbreak but the equine industry will be responsible for paying back a share over a period of up to 10 years.

This will be done by a $0.50 levy on manufactured feeds and deworming. These products were chosen to try to be as equitable as possible. The compromise ensures that funding will be available when needed to properly manage an outbreak and avoids the use of a standard charge that could have

an impact on the manufactured feed industry, since the levy will only be triggered when there is an outbreak. It also cuts concern that a levy would just be another form of government income, which could have been an issue if there was an ongoing levy that was collected irrespective of an outbreak.

Hitting the trail for a worthy cause

Sandy Nichloson and Anne Warmbrunn will ride part of the Bicentennial National Trail to raise money for brumbie rescue

This month intrepid equestrians are hitting the Bicentennial National Trail to help raise awareness and funds for brumbies. The women, Anne Warmbrunn and Sandy Nichloson, are venturing onto the BNT with two brumbies, one being from Toolara and the other from Save the Brumbies in NSW, and a stock horse on April 16 to raise awareness of the South East Queensland Brumby Association and to raise much needed funds. Funds raised care for the brumbies being captured

and rehomed from Toolara State Forest in SEQ where the horses are at risk, especially from motor vehicles. Anne and Sandy will join the trail from Kilkivan in southern Queensland and will head south for two weeks. The BNT is the longest trail in the world extending from Cooktown in Queensland to Healesville in Victoria for 5330 km. and they will let you know how many kms they travel at the end of the two weeks. They think they will travel around 200km. Could your horse’s water supply be toxic? By KERRY MARSH (B.Ed.,B.Ag.Sc.) Good quality water is essential for the horse, in fact it is the most important element of the horse's diet. Increasingly, I have found that water is often the most common cause of heavy metal toxicity in horses. Horses require a palatable supply of good quality water which needs to be accessible at all times. Obviously water intake changes with exercise, diet, weather fluctuations and lactation. It is crucial to your horse's continued health that his water supply is not toxic. Horses tend to drink less water when it is over mineralised or contains heavy metals. Most horse owners rarely think to have water tested. If it looks acceptable, has little or no smell and there is obviously nothing present in the water like fungus or algae and the horse drinks it, then it must be OK - right? Wrong! Towards the end of the drought, ground water supplies in most areas, were at their lowest levels for decades. The bores and springs that continued to provide water during this period often brought up heavy metals and became high in salinity. What are heavy metals? Heavy metals are natural components of the earth's crust and are harmless in low levels. However high concentrations of Aluminium, Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, lead, Mercury, Nickel, Titanium ( just to name a few) lead to poisoning and upset the balance of the essential minerals required by the horse. They are called heavy metals because they have a high atomic weight and displace the lighter metals such as selenium, magnesium and zinc etc. This is why they are also called toxic metals as they cannot be metabolised by the body and therefore accumulate in the body. There has been very little research conducted on heavy metal toxicity in horses but from my extensive experience, the results are debilitating and serious. The most common culprit of toxicity in horses is water. Fast forward to the recent floods. It is easy to assume that a flood will flush all water systems clean. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The bores, springs and rivers that were affected during drought conditions may now have higher concentrations of heavy metals. This occurrence will be affecting many waterways throughout Australia with not just mercury but other heavy metals in smaller or larger concentrations than the above. What to look for in a test that will affect your horse?

The first suitability for water is the total soluble salts (TSS or TDS Total dissolvable solids) Water high is TSS is water high in salinity. Salinity interprets as mineral salts, sodium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate and carbonate. Water high in TSS will make it unfit for horses as it will most likely be unpalatable. High sodium in the horse usually presents as an imbalance of electrolytes and the sodium/potassium ratio. This may be observed as scouring or loose stools, irritable behaviour, decreased urinary output, difficult to manage, decreased sweat level, difficult to get fit, staggering, reduction in appetite, kidney disturbances. Bacteria Blue green algae is obvious to the eye and should be avoided at all costs. It may cause photosensitisation, tremors, weakness blood in manure, convulsions. Water high in bacteria is usually high in nitrates. Nitrates are from runoff from fertilisers and manures. They often build up in ground water supplies. The amount of bacteria is measured in nitrate levels. Other elements in the water other than heavy metals It is important to realise that these are often expressed as the upper or maximum levels. The maximum concentration of heavy metals for humans is the same for horses. The essential elements such as calcium, copper, phosphorus, potassium etc. have a higher level than the human guideline. The heavy metals, barium, aluminium, tin and titanium are not part of a routine heavy metals screening and will need to be added to the test as they cause insidious problems in the horse if exposure is ongoing. Heavy metal symtoms in a horse Some of the most common symptoms cause an imbalance of the essential minerals, colics, hair loss especially on face and neck, tying up, ulcers, impaired kidney and liver function, adrenal and thyroid dysfunction, scouring, pale manure, muscle tremors, convulsions, behavioural problems, lack of performance, lack of stamina,vet fails to find a diagnosis. Over supplementation Many horse owners are not aware of the mineral concentrations in their horse's water supply and they often supplement their horses with additional minerals in the belief they are 'doing the best' for their horse. Where to get water testing? These are some of the many laboratories available for testing. Some local water authorities will also do testing. Ensure you get your water sample from the point at which the horse accesses it. Make sure to ask for a heavy metal profile as it is not part of a standard water test. Costs vary from $80 - $250 depending on the test required and the laboratory. Individual elements will cost extra. Heavy metal testing The only accurate method to test for heavy metals is hair tissue mineral analysis. Once exposed to heavy or toxic metals, they remain in the blood for approximately 24 hours. They then leave the blood and deposit in the soft tissues where they remain until exposure is discontinued or procedures are taken to remove them from the system. Your horse does not have a choice in the water he drinks, often he will drink less of the toxic water than he requires. If your horse has bore, spring, spring fed dam, well or river water, it is an inexpensive exercise to have that water tested - it may just save your horse from serious health problems and thus save you money. Shock wave therapy is more precise By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Shock wave therapy has been without doubt, one of the most useful physical therapy modalities to arrive on the scene over recent times. The advantage shock wave units have over the older forms of physical treatments such as ultrasound, magnetic waves and laser is that the design of the machine allows the beam to be focussed and delivered to the actual area of the injury that is to be treated. All these units depend on the delivery of waves of energy waves to a damaged area of the body. Most of the other forms of treatment passage from the surface of the skin through a lot of healthy tissue, before reaching the target. This means a lot of the energy being wasted. Shock wave therapy is able to focus on the precise area and so a much more intense response can be expected Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), emits shock waves which are tiny impulses of high energy waves emitted from a generator that are able to pass through tissues stimulating certain cells as they go. There are various ESWT generators for veterinary use. Focused units deliver a specific amount of energy to a measurable ‘focused’ tissue depth/area, so that the veterinarian can treat a specific area more precisely. Unfocused units (radial pressure wave therapy, or RPWT) vary greatly in waveform and

It's important to understand how each unit acts on tissue so the horse benefits properly. Our belief is that nature's inflammatory mechanism, which is responsible for all healing, is a wonderful process and in by far the majority of situations, is more than adequate and a return to function occurs. The initial phases of an any injury have more than enough stimulators for healing and natures process to occur but in many situations in the horse, the damage is severe and healing begins to slow and stagnate before complete return to normal has occurred. This is where we use shock waves. We attempt to focus on areas of stalled healing and bombard the area with shock waves.

This now re-stimulates the natural healing response and encourages further healing and resolution and removal of damage tissue. We have had some spectacular results in conditions such as bowed tendons, suspensory ligament injuries, splints and in the reduction of scar tissue masses. Treatment protocols vary and vets use different probes depending on the depth of the injury. In general, a single ESWT treatment consists of 500-2,000 pulses or ‘shocks’ to the area every seven to 21 days for an average of three total treatments (or as needed based on clinical signs/improvement). Unfortunately shock wave therapy is quite expensive as the units themselves are expensive to purchase and each unit is loaded with certain dose of energy that has to be replaced when used. Therefore use of the treatment requires careful evaluation and consideration of the cost benefit. One of the most useful responses we have seen is in the reduction in the size of unsightly areas of scar tissue such as splints and old wounds. Alternative forms of treatment such as surgery and drugs are much more invasive, also expensive, and often incur risks of side effects. Shock wave therapy offers an effective alternative. We believe that the future of the use of ESWT in the horse holds great promise. The key is to be understand the therapy and be selective in cases that are subjected to treatment.

Equine Remedial Therapy taps horse’s own healing ability By ALEXANDRA STRANGE Equine Remedial Therapy is a unique manual therapy for musculoskeletal disorders in the horse. It consists of various forms of soft tissue manipulation and mobilizing stretches. It also stimulates or sedates stress points, acupuncture points, nerve cell receptors and reflexes. It is useful as the internal organs are able to function more efficiently once the strain of impaired structural alignment is improved. It can help with anything from horses with muscle soreness to horses with allergies or moodiness. I work with the horse's natural healing ability, so nothing I do is forceful, just mainly using acupressure points with gentle mobilizing stretches. It works the deep and superficial muscles, internal organs, along with the nerves. This improves and restores body alignment and musculoskeletal function. I have had fantastic results with horses that are stiff, muscle sore, have injuries, nervous horses, horses that are head shy or touchy around their ears or poll, horses that are just not performing to their peak, 'grumpy' and/or 'marey' horses, and horses that are acting out of character. It has even picked up some horse's spirits that seem off or really glum. My treatments also help in injury prevention as well! This is done by working on: - Releasing tight muscles - Enhancing the healing process when sore - Detoxing for the horse's well-being - Mobilizing stretches to help the treatment process - Enhancing your horse's performance - Maintaining internal balance - Helping your horse be happier overall and a pleasure to ride. Each treatment is aimed at returning the horse to full athletic function. It creates an opportunity for the horse's nat-

ural healing ability to normalise within its capacity where the problem's encountered. The main goal of a treatment is for pain free function to the optimal level the horse is capable of performing. If the horse has had an injury there is often pain, localised swelling and heat. Some cases may need veterinary assistance to identify the source or sources of the pain. It is very successful for musculoskeletal disorders and as an additional therapy to assist in organic conditions. It is safe to do a treatment in conjunction with veterinary and other treatments. In general, with appropriate follow up maintenance and injury prevention care, the results are long lasting.

Gatton to host the ‘big boys’ of the equestrian world The Gatton showgrounds will see some of the biggest horses in Australia when it hosts the 2011 Clydesdale and Heavy Horse Field Days on the weekend of Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. This year will feature competition, demonstrations, and activities aimed at keeping both horse lovers and the public entertained. Over the weekend there will be 11 breed displays including Clydesdales, Shires, Percherons, Australian Draught Horses, Gypsy Horses, Drum, Suffolk, Georgean Grande, Belgion, Highland pony and Frieisan with members of each of these Societies available for questions. Anita Scampton on purebred Clydesdale, Eucalypt Park Chieftan, will be performing freestyle dressage to music in the arena. and there will also be a Friesian free style dressage demonstration. horse era will run in the main pavilion behind the grandstand. A farriers shoeing competition will be a highlight with teams racing each other to measure and make the shoes then shoe the heavies in the best time. National Finals Rodeo hits the Gold Coast ORGANISERS of the re-scheduled 2011 National Finals Rodeo have dipped their widebrimmed cowboy hats to the crew at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event, staged by the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) will be held indoors for the fifth consecutive year at the centre at Broadbeach on the central Gold Coast over four huge days and nights After the planned January finals were postponed because of the Queensland flood emergency, 400 tonnes of dirt and over 500 tonnes of cattle and horseflesh created a mountain of work that suddenly had to be moved to later in the year. It was a monumental logistical and re-scheduling task, but thanks to the Convention and Exhibition Centre and major supporter, Jupiters Casino, the rodeo will go ahead from Thursday April 7 to Sunday, April 10. Government helps racing get back up and running Queensland racecourses, hit hard by the devastating floods and cyclone earlier in the year have received some welcome news with the State Government to get the industry ‘back on track’. Minister for Agriculture, Food and Regional Economies Tim Mulherin announced $2.35 million for Racing Queensland to repair flood and cyclone damaged racecourses and for country racing clubs to undertake work to meet health and safety standards. Mr Mulherin said in excess of 30 racecourses were affected by flooding and Cyclone Yasi across Queensland. “$1.45 million will be spent to undertake flood remediation works on a number of key racecourses primarily at Rockhampton, Emerald, Cairns, Townsville, Warwick, Albion Park and Ipswich,” Mr Mulherin said. This funding will assist by covering the shortfall from insurers for damaged clubs so that racing can get back to normal as soon as possible. As an example, the Government will provide up to: • $235,000 at Rockhampton to resurrect the grass track and greyhound track which were both under water for 10 days and covered in silt. • $100,000 at Emerald race track to fix the sand training track and repair the perimeter fencing and road infrastructure. • $150,000 at Warwick to resurrect the sand training track, remediation of the irrigations

system and replacement of the running rail. • $175,000 in Townsville to resurrect thoroughbred and greyhound facilities. • $50,000 needed by the Burdekin Race Club at Home Hill to fix extensive structural damage caused by Cyclone Yasi. • $60,000 required in Gympie to fix the sand track that was all but washed away. In addition to the $1.45 million allocated for key racecourses, an additional $900,000 has been specifically allocated to assist country thoroughbred race clubs. • $200,000 will be provided to address workplace health and safety-related damage caused by the recent floods and Cyclone Yasi. • $700,000 will be given to assist clubs in meeting the minimum venue and equipment standards required to ensure the health and safety of racing participants Mr Mulherin said country racing is an integral part of community life in rural and regional Queensland. “Getting these flood repairs completed at the 30 damaged race tracks across Queensland will help in the community recovery process,” he said. “This funding will ensure race tracks and meetings are back up and running and local communities can enjoy the races. “I thank Racing Queensland for their leadership on this issue, ensuring facilities are returned to racing order as quickly as possible and enabling participants to remain in business.”

Dressage can benefit horse and rider By JOHN DOWNES I have discussed many topics influencing your horse including basic obedience, resistance, the aids and other factors. Now let's get down to the specifics of dressage - what it is and how it will affect the way your horse works for you. Now for you non dressage riders who are starting to roll your eyes and turn the page, take a moment and just hang in there. Dressage is a martial sport previously used by riders and cavalry to improve the horse's obedience in battle. Its initial purpose was never intended to be what it is now, an Olympic sport. The rider needed his mount to be responsive in extremely threatening environments and the rider's life depended upon the horse being totally under his control and reliable at all times. Dressage is a term derived from the French word ‘Dresser’ which means to school. However the sport of dressage is based on a series of exercises with the aim of improving the paces of the horse and the partnership between horse and rider. Another way to think about the dressage exercises is to think of them as tools. A clever and educated rider has a series of exercises or tools designed to either repair a problem or even add performance to his or her mount. Unfortunately some riders are rather big on hammers. These riders tend to get results you would expect from horses ridden with too much hand, whip or spur. Other riders however have a more elegant and sophisticated way of remedying problems. Let's check out some of the tools or exercises we have available. The basic tools are go, stop and go where we want. In a dressage test or even a show jumping round, these basics are important. You need to put your horse at the base of the fence at the correct angle and distance to give him every chance of making it over. Failure to do so will result in

knocked rails and refusals. Accuracy, in dressage, is the most basic of requirements. Lack of accuracy is indicative of a lack of control. Having the horse obedient to the driving and rein aids is proof of correct training. The horse and rider's ability to execute transitions at set points in a test is confirmation of these skills. The horse must respect the leg and hand before we can have any chance of improving it's way of going. After these basic requirements of the test, the judge will next be looking towards the training scale to help in allocation of marks. You as a rider should do the same. Rhythm is at the top of the training scale and also the primary concern of the judge. This will apply in all movements and paces. Rhythm as mentioned above is more than just a sport specific requirement. Rhythm is an important aspect of most horse sports. Horses tending to rush or steal steps are almost always on the forehand or are tense. To remedy this problem - slow down and always try to do the opposite of what the horse is trying to use against you to avoid work. By rushing he does not have to engage the hind quarter. Try at all times to maintain the same steady rhythm be it in lengthening or a half pass. Using a pocket metronome will help you be a little more careful if you are not great at maintaining a rhythm. Lateral and longitudinal bending will be the next thing that you should be looking for and is the next step on the training scale. We can improve lateral bend in the early stages of the training by leg yield in walk and trot. This teaches the horse to move away from the leg and hopefully bend without changing tempo or rhythm (remember your first rule in the training scale). Once rhythm and bend has been established, we will automatically achieve the next step in the training scale which is acceptance of the bridle or on the bit. By controlling the rhythm and bending the horse this forces us to take a contact on the reins and hopefully ride the horse from the inside leg into the outside rein, otherwise the leg yield would not happen. The roundness of the horse in front should be a mirror of the

Dressage exercise can improve the link between horse and rider engagement of the hind quarter. Using the reins and bit to abuse the horse's mouth to get the horse to drop it's head is not only cruel but creates what is called a false outline. Roundness should be a product of rhythm and bend. Exercises such as shoulder in and leg yield will help you achieve this. Proof of the correctness of your work is the roundness of the horse. Having the horse through and over the back is a product of correct riding and just getting him to drop his head will not make him lift his back and swing.

Be careful in your training to ensure that you ride the horse from your leg into your hand. Next on the training scale is impulsion. This can be improved by using many different tools/exercises such as changing stride length on the circle. First lengthen a few steps and then bring the horse back to a more collected trot or canter and then repeat this when the new pace is well established. The true benefit of the exercise is realised by performing strong parades or half halts in the down transitions to collection as the energy/impulsion created by the lengthening then translates into collection. Improving collection will automatically improve the impulsion as the horse now has the hind leg more under and can push from behind to lengthen the trot rather than running and going on the forehand. Next month we will talk more about how to execute certain exercises and the reasons why they are done in the first place. Remember being able to do an exercise by itself is totally pointless if it does not deliver an improvement in the paces or partnership of horse and rider.

The most beautiful riding is seen when the rider is not being a passenger, or working from cues - it is learning to move your body in ways that work with your horse. Horses are sensitive, so sensitive they can feel a fly. How often do we say these words... yet how often do we think about what they really mean. I see students who ride with their seat. They overwork their bodies in the seat so that they are doing all the work for the horse and leaving him no room for expansion or movement. I believe in riding with your seat. Sit on your horse, breathe, relax through your body, your face, your shoulders, your spine and feel your legs long and loose around your horse. When you are relaxed, begin to walk, a nice forward walk is best but don’t try to force a walk speed just feel how the horse’s hips move. Start by allowing the horse’s hips to move your body and follow the horse’s movement.

Easiest felt bareback but if you are not confident or comfortable with bareback use a bareback pad or the thinnest saddle that fits your horse. A relaxed body is reflected in a relaxed horse. When I tell my students to relax they get this funny slouch and sloppy body position. This is not relaxed. When we are relaxed our muscles are not overworking, they are aligned and responsive ready to feel. In this state you become response-able. Frustration, criticalness, judgement and anger only increase the tension in your body. When you learn to have fun and be flexible and mind and body, riding improves dramatically. This is what I teach my students - how to relax, breathe, use their bodies and come into balance. An open invitation is extended to the horse community to attend a clinic organised to benefit one of Queensland's most respected farriers, Shane Turner. The clinic will be held at Stockman’s Supplies, Hedley Avenue ,Hendra on Sunday, May 15 starting at 7:30am. Cost of the clinic is $55 which includes seminars, morning tea afternoon tea and lunch Traditionally horse shoeing clinics only appeal to farriers (obviously!). However, this time the organiser Craig Jones has come up with a concept for a clinic that will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many horse owners. Such is the high regard with which the farrier community holds Shane Turner, several of Australia's top farriers have volunteered their time free of charge to put on demonstrations. The prospect of seeing such highly skilled tradesmen as the likes of Craig Jones, Richard Hansen, Bruce Donaldon, Wade Graham, is truly a unique opportunity and as an added bonus Craig Jones has been able to obtain the services of Warren Backhouse one of Australia's leading reining horse trainers to lecture, as well as Rebel Morrow who competed at the Athens Olympics in three day eventing. Topics covered will be shoeing the reining horse, shoeing to prevent interference injuries, traction devices for the equine athlete and using modern acrylics/urethanes in the field. What’s Happening MUDGEERABA SHOW Here it comes again for the 82nd time - the Mudgeeraba Show will be held on June 25th and 26th. What a great line up of fun and excitement, with two stages of all day entertainment, roving acts, pavilions, woodchop and dog and duck show. The grand parade will be the biggest ever and the utes will be a must to see. The wood chop and ring events will be in full swing on both days, and step back in time in the pioneer village. Your show experience would not be complete without a visit to all the animals and a wander through the pavilion to see all the talent and creativity of our local exhibitors. Saturday night’s program will, as always, be spectacular with trick riding, FMX demos, huge fireworks and heaps more. There is two full days of ring events. QLD ALL BREEDS YOUNGSTOCK SHOW The Queensland Allbreeds Youngstock Show is open to all horses three years and under and will be held on Sunday, May 8 at Toowoomba Showgrounds. This is the only All Breeds Youngstock Show in Queensland and it offers a full halter program for registered horses and ponies three years and under. There are hundreds of halter events for all registered breeds and colours. There is over 300 classes catering for over 30 breeds, there are five major supreme awards, a colt classic and a supreme of supremes. This show continues to grow every year and the 2011 program has included several new breeds including Standardbreds, Roans and Sportaloosas. Heavy horses put through their paces for CareFlight If you happen to be in the vicinity of Warwick on Sunday, May 1, give some thought to attending the heavy horse day at Yangan. Held on the property of Mick Bradford, this annual event is staged by the Killarney Lions Club with proceeds donated to the CareFlight Helicopter service. Mick is a well-known local character and his property has been run by the Bradford family for several generations. Much of the original infrastructure is still there - from yards and farm buildings to a staggering array of old machinery. A visit to the Bradford property is a trip back in time. Mick’s stable of Clydesdale and Australian Draught Horses is famous through South East Queensland and much work and training has been put into having them perform a range of pre-machinery farm duties. On the day you will see them pulling ploughs, harrows and hay reapers and operating machines that bale hay, shell corn and saw logs. The grand finale is a team of 10 horses pulling a large cultivator controlled by a single operator. There will also be demonstrations of blacksmithing and wheel wrighting. There will be food stalls and entertainment and this is a family day for all ages to enjoy. Entry is just $5 with proceeds to Careflight. Page 34

Australian Stockhorses star in world championships In celebration of the 40th anniversary of The Australian Stock Horse Society, the 2011 National Championships has been given the title 40th Anniversary Australian Stock Horse Society World Championship Show to be held at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre in Tamworth in May. The championships will run from May 9 to 15 and will include sales as well as competition. The full show program will include National Futurity; National Maturity; Maiden Campdraft Series; ABBEY Open Challenge; Youth Challenge; ASHLA; Led; Hacking; Working; Station Horse; Youth Judging; Dressage and Sporting. The 40th Anniversary Australian Stock Horse Society World Championship Show will include the 2011 Fountain of Youth National Yearling and Two Year Old Sale on May 11.

Confirmed judges for the 40th Anniversary Australian Stock Horse Society World Championship Show are now listed on the program below. There will also be a campdraft competition run in conjunction with the championships. The Australian Stock Horse Society was established in 1971 in Scone NSW. Today it is has more than 9,500 members nationally and internationally with more than 170,000 horses registered and 60 branches across the country. The recognition of the Australian Stockhorse as a ’multi-purpose breed’ has seen it in demand particularly for performance sports and the championships in Tamworth in May will help raise the profile of the breed both domestically and internationally.
