Helmet standard under review In October 2014, the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and the EU (European) body for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) withdrew the EN1384 Helmet Standard as the standard to test helmets. This standard is currently being revised by the CEN. Whilst this standard is being revised, the CEN have released a bridging standard for European made helmets – called the VG1. Pony Clubs Australia (PCA) has performed a review of the EN1384, VG1 and also the current Australian/New Zealand 3838 helmets standards. It has compared the testing required for each standard. It would appear from this review, that the VG1 standard is superior to the EN1384 standard. This is also superior to the AS/NZS 3838 (Australian) standard. PCA therefore finds that any helmet tested and meeting the VG1 helmet standard is acceptable for use in all pony club activities. Helmets need to comply with the following standards: AS/NZS 3838 (AU); PAS 015 (UK); ASTM F 1163 (USA); VG1 (Europe); EN 1384 (Europe) - these are only acceptable for helmets made VG1- Charles Owen Fian up to and including 2015. In response to this, PCA members should be aware that: •The change mentioned only affects members that have a European made helmet, or are considering purchasing one. •Members are recommended to check the standard and year of manufacture for their helmet. •Helmets with the EN1384 standard, made in 2015 or older, are acceptable for use in PCA. •Helmets with the EN1384 standard plus 3838 - Zilco Supatop Helmet the VG1 standard, are acceptable for use in PCA. •Helmets with the VG1 standard are acceptable for use in PCA. •Helmets with the EN1384 standard made in 2016, will not be acceptable for use in PCA Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use, in the instance of a fall and observe its usable life. The AS/NZS 3838 standard advises that helmets meeting this criteria have a usable life of five years. * Note - Standards are reviewed every 10 years AS/NZS 3838 was introduced in 2006 and will be up for review at the end of 2016.
Equestrian Australia statement Equestrian Australia can advise that Helmet Standard EN1384 will remain effective until December 31, 2016. In addition, a new standard VG1 has been added to the General Regulations effective immediately. As of January 1, 2017 helmets with the EN1384 standard will not be permitted under EA’s General Regulations. As per the EA General Regulations, EN1384 - Charles Owen Fiona Equestrian Australia highly recommends the use of helmets that conform to Australian Standard AS/NZS 3838, as this standard provides for more stringent testing and further periodic retesting.

Scone Horse Festival takes on Rio flavour For more than 30 years, one of the most unique spectacles has taken place in the historic town of Scone in the Upper Hunter Valley in celebration of the role the horse has played in the development of the area. The Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival, which will run from May 5 to 15, showcases the versatility of the horse and will provide everyone with an opportunity to experience something different, whether you are a horse owner or simply love all things equestrian. With Scone known as the ‘Horse Capital of Australia’, the Festival pays homage to all breeds of horses including thoroughbreds, stock horses and draught horses as well as the men and women who breed and work with them. One of the most striking demonstrations of the kindred of horse and man is the Horse Parade which is conducted on the opening Saturday of the festival. Headed by veteran horsemen, straight backed visions of nobility on horseback, the Parade is a showcase for the Upper Hunter horse world: a great family spectacle that packs the main street. Other events throughout the Festival include the festival ball, charity rodeo, sheep-dog trials,

Whether you ride for pleasure or competition, our joint supplements can provide the additional support that your horse may need to assist them in performing at their best.
GLUCOSAMINE Repetitive joint stress, ageing and physical injury all contribute to cartilage losing its resilience. As cartilage production is disrupted and the cartilage degenerates, osteoarthritis – characterised by pain, inflammation and joint stiffness - sets in. Supplementing with glucosamine provides one of the most important raw materials for the synthesis and healing of cartilage.
DEVILS CLAW Used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, it is useful for treating pain in a range of joint and muscular problems. The bitter action of Devils Claw stimulates and tones the digestive system. As it is thought that most arthritic conditions are associated with poor digestion and absorption of food, Devils Claw has a stimulant effect on the stomach and gall bladder which contributes to its use as an anti-arthritic remedy.

The Horse Report
Aussies borrow horses for Cowboy Dressage finals Australian Tanja Kraus and Phil Monaghan are both keen supporters of Cowboy Dressage and have been promoting the sport through clinics and competitions (called gatherings) over the past couple of years. They both thought heading over to Rancho Murieta in California to watch the world finals would be an amazing experience. When they spoke to the founder of Cowboy Dressage, Eitan Beth Halchemy, they joked that they would love to ride. “Come over and we will get you horses!” was the reply, and the idea of competing at the finals and in the top hand competition was born. As it turned out, finding horses proved to be a challenging task, and even once horses were found, they fell through, so at the time of boarding their plane to head to the USA, Tanja and Phil were 'horseless'. After Eitan Beth Halachmy shared a photo of Tanja on Facebook, it was seen by Kerrin Hoban - one of the owners of City Limits Ranch in Watsonville, California - a ranch that teaches kids and adults horsemanship, and rescues horses. Kerrin invited Tanja and Phil to have a tour, and this led to dinner. While talking over dinner, when Tanja and Phil mentioned that they didn't have horses Kerrin pipes up “we'll get you horses”. Over the next couple of days, the City Limits Ranch family pulled together to organise horses for Tanja and Phil to ride in the competition. The pair got borrowed horses to compete in the two competitions, held over four days at the finals. Phil rode 'Smoky', a rescued retired roping horse, now used to teach kids and visitors horsemanship and Tanja rode Triscuit - a quarter horse mare bred at the ranch, currently spelling, having placed in a working cow horse competition two months prior. Both horses, owned by Dink Evans - the other half of City Limits Ranch, had never seen a dressage arena. With less than seven days to the competition, Tanja and Phil began the task of introducing themselves to their new mounts, and developing a communication that was going to work under the pressure of international

competition. Visiting the ranch each day to spend time with and ride the horses was how the next five days was spent. The day before the gathering, the horses were loaded for the 250km journey to Rancho Murieta, shown around the grounds, and settled into their stables for the night. The very next day was competition day and their first competition was the Top Hand Competition - an 'elite competition for Cowboy Dressage top competitors' riding alongside 30 fellow trainers, horsemanship practitioners and their horses. While they did not place in the top 10, Phil and Tanja were both proud of their and their horses’ performances on the night and the scores revealing they were within 10 % of the winning ride. The next three days were the Cowboy Dressage World Finals competition, which saw both Aussies place in multiple events on their 'stolen horses'. Tanja and Phil are returning to the 2016 Gathering and competing again, and until then they will be running Cowboy Dressage clinics and events around Australia.

Understanding club feet in horses By DAVID LOVELL BVSC In a perfect world, all four feet on every horse would have an identical size, shape and appearance but this almost never happens. Obviously there are differences in shape between front and back feet due to differing loadings, but even here, matching pairs are extremely uncommon. A horse with slightly asymmetrical feet is nothing out of the ordinary but if one hoof differs dramatically from the other, you might be dealing with a club foot—an abnormally upright hoof with long, contracted heels and a prominent or bulging coronary band. No one is really sure where or how the term “Club Foot” originated, but most likely it is a reference to a syndrome in humans, known as a club foot, (congenital talipes equinovaris), even though the condition in the horse bears no similarity to the human deformity. The relationship is probably simply that both are deformations of the foot. Because shortening of the musculo-tendonous unit (the deep digital flexor muscle and tendon) causes this syndrome in the horse, it is more accurate to describe a club foot as a "flexural deformity" of the coffin joint. And while a deformity might

That being said, I still consider a club foot in a horse to be a major conformational abnormality. I would discriminate negatively when assessing a horse being selected for future performance, particularly higher level equestrian activities, (racing can be a little more forgiving), and certainly high grade club feet are a never

Be aware of club foot when buying  From page 10 As well as the sole and toe lameness described, older horses with club feet frequently suffer from lameness issues due to problems in the palmer, or back half of the foot, in particular, navicular disease. Abnormal coffin joint loading, strain on the navicular bone’s supporting ligaments, and because contracture or shortening of the DDFT is the primary problem, increased stress and pressure on the flexor cortex of the navicular bone (where the DDFT passes over the tiny bone) has the potential to elicit early onset changes to the navicular bone. Grades 3 and 4 club feet are very easy to recognise, and almost always are causing the horse some problems. Grade 2 feet can be a little more difficult to detect, although a trained observer should always be able to pick. Clever trimming and farriery can work to create similar looking front feet and disguise the problem so whenever assessing a horse, particularly if considering purchase, it is critical that you pay very close scrutiny to the feet, looking for characteristic signs, and any subtle differences.
The club foot will usually be slightly smaller, have a smaller frog, deeper sulci, and less dish in the sole in front of the frog.

Looking from the side, the pastern bone is usually pushed forward a little, making it almost in line with the dorsal hoof wall instead of
being placed a little behind the coronet. Characteristically, the opposite front foot most often has a low to flat palmer angle, (i.e. the exact opposite), and so will usually have lower heel tubule angles and a larger frog. In most cases, these cleverly “matched feet, are not causing the horse any problem. The management and use of that horse has been tailored to suit the circumstance. The problem comes when a new owner takes over, and the management of the horse changes. Club feet can be very progressive and a subtle Grade 2 can deteriorate and progress to Grade 3, resulting in serious issues. X-rays of the feet will greatly help in detection. The club foot has a very different shape and mass of the pedal bone, compared to the contra-lateral foot. In particular, the pedal bone on the club has a greater bone angle, which is easy to measure. Particularly if the horse is a little older, this shape and mass of the pedal bone will never change, and the horse will require constant input to maintain functionality. In the next issue, we will deal with treatments of club feet

A healthy immune system cuts allergies By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist

biggest class of antioxidants and researchers have identified approximately 5000 flavonoids in various foods. Polyphenols are a smaller class of antioxidants which scientists often referred to as phenols. Terms such as phytonutrient and phytochemicals are a more generic term that are often used by researchers to describe nutrients an antioxidant chemicals in plants. Antioxidants are generally found in brightly coloured fruits, berries, grapes, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables and plants. Other antioxidants that are very effective are vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene and selenium they all have extremely positive effects on free radicals and the damage that they cause. Antioxidants have a major impact on free radicals. Oxidation is a very natural process that happens during normal cellular functions. Just by breathing, exercising and breaking down food the horse's body creates free radicals. Whilst the body metabolises oxygen
very efficiently approximately 1 or 2% of the body cells are damaged in the process and their molecules turn into free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules, with unpaired electrons. The main problem with free radicals is that they often injure the cell, damaging the DNA which creates the seed for disease. Antioxidants actually donate an extra electron to the free radical which neutralises it. Once it is neutralised, the reactive free radical chain ends which prevents cell damage. This reduces the risk of degenerative diseases. It is important to find a balance between the exposure to harmful free radicals and the right balance and intake of protective antioxidants. Providing the horses body with sufficient antioxidants and supporting the immune system is really important for overall health and well-being in any situation. A good well-balanced formula can be used daily to support immune function and prevent the risk of allergy based conditions.

Allergies of various types are an abnormal response to a weakened immune system. In these cases what may be quite harmless in normal circumstances may then become a problem. Allergens such as pollen and reactions to insect bites or certain types of feed can become a problem. Just about anything can trigger an allergic reaction in horses and these reactions can range from quite mild to serious. When an allergic reaction occurs, it can contribute to chronic inflammatory responses throughout the whole body of the horse. Allergic reactions can include respiratory problems, skin irritations itchy and swollen eyes, coughing, diarrhoea, hives and irritations to the nose, mouth and skin, not to mention impacting on digestive health. Other types of allergic reactions that occur can be due to insect bites which may include spiders. Spiders quite commonly involved can be the white tailed spider which can cause major skin irritations. These spiders tend to hide in dark quiet places such as horse rugs hanging on gates or post and rail fencing. It is highly recommended to ensure that rugs are not left out but it kept in a cupboard away from these types of spiders. Some horses can react to other insect bites such as mosquitoes. But most importantly if you support the immune system then you reduce the risk of horses having an allergic reaction. Phytonutrients are a reasonably new way of controlling inflammation and the negative effect that it has on the horse's body. These are natural compounds and have been shown to have an excellent effect on supporting immune function. Many plants produce flavonoids, carotenoids, polyphenolics and anthocyanins all on their own to protect them from oxidative damage. Flavonoids are one of the

Supplementing helps protect your horse  From page 14 There are a number of highly effective antioxidants in the form of herb extracts and plant materials. Some of these include grape seed extract, turmeric, ginkgo biloba and ginger root extract. Generally speaking equine diets tend to lack fresh antioxidant compounds; it is unusual for horses to have access to fresh green pasture particularly when there is a drought and lack of feed. Horses tend to be fed dried hays and hard feeds. Many of the current premix and pellet feeds a highly processed and refined this further reduces the antioxidant capacity. By supplementing with a well-balanced antioxidant rich formula and feeding a natural balanced diet will go a long way to protecting the horses body from the effects of free radicals. This will also reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases and assist with the horse's immune system, respiratory function and cardiovascular health. A healthy horse and a healthy immune system will always reduce the risk of disease which includes allergies. One of the most important aspects of managing allergies is digestive health. 60% of lymph tissue surrounds the digestive tract, horses can be exposed to foreign substances that can cause illness, so the digestive system plays a very important role in maintaining a healthy immune function The GI tract of the horse is highly developed but also quite sensitive therefore the digestive system and the way it functions can be easily upset. Even stress can cause digestive disturbances
A healthy horse and a healthy immune system will reduce the risk of disease and allergies. these can include physical, mental, and environmental, drugs and poor nutritional intake. Healthy strong digestive enzymes can help to maintain and restore the normal function of the digestive system, in doing so it can increase absorption and actually have an anti allergy effect. Using a higher dose of pro and pre-biotics can also have a huge benefit on gut bacteria, this can also reduce pathogenic bacteria and their toxins and reduce inflammation and improve digestive. Using high-quality nutritional interventions that contain powerful antioxidants and
digestive support can improve the outcome for allergic reactions. I recommend the OxyDane and BioEquus to support the immune system and digestive health. I also recommend feeding a totally natural diet and one that is well-balanced and suited to the individual horse. It is also possible to tailor make custom blends for specific issues. The Horse Report
Using liberty to enhance your horse’s training By TANJA KRAUS What is liberty good for? I sometimes get asked how liberty applies to training when you are not interested in just doing liberty for the fun of it. For example someone might say to me, “I train dressage, or western or campdrafting, so how would liberty help me?” Liberty has four different categories or training areas; 1. Entertainment Firstly, some people like to train in liberty for the purposes of entertainment - shows, horses for the movies, that sort of thing. 2. Building respect. I use liberty in all of my training - horses getting started under saddle, retraining, my own horses training - whatever. Once you remove the ropes and start working with the horse at liberty, he really needs to respect what you are saying, if he is going to perform the maneuvers. 3. Connection - Building a bond. Liberty work really gets your horse in tune with you and builds a bond between the horse and handler. The horse having the freedom to choose whether to connect or not is a powerful one. 4. Fun. Liberty work can offer a welcome break from performance training for both the horse and rider - having a play with him in his paddock or in the arena, gets him (and you) re-inspired in the training and gives you
Liberty training can be used on horses from all disciplines to help gain respect
something different for your tool kit. Each of these areas overlap in some way but your liberty training will differ depending on your focus - if you are looking to just have a bit of fun, then the training session will be more relaxed, and if you are training for entertainment, that becomes a little more serious - we have a job to do. Liberty respect will have more 'pressure' in the early stages as we are proving to the
horse we can control his direction and movement with no ropes or equipment. Your liberty training will also depend on your horses frame of mind on a given day if you head out to the paddock or arena to have a relaxing 'play day' and your horse begins to dominate you, then you will have to change your focus from play to respect. Liberty is an excellent and often under used area of training.

“As well as being an outstanding horsewoman, Tanja is an excellent communicator and teacher. So the take-home value of her clinics is huge. Her ability to read each rider and each horse enables her to tailor her advice and instruction in the most productive and effective way. Tanja’s guidance and support has transformed the way I ride and handle my horses and I cannot recommend her clinics highly enough.” Paula Todd, Bangalow, NSW.

The organisers of the Qld Sheep Dog Championships, which are held at the Exhibition each year, will have sheep dog trials in Boonah. This has all been made possible by the tremendous support of sponsors and the enthusiasm of the committee to move forward and make major changes to the program, while at the same time keeping all the old favourites. All the pavilion judging will be on Thursday and on Friday the fully functional show will allow patrons lots of time to examine all the wonderful exhibits from the Boonah district. Visitors can see all the great traditional features of a good old fashioned country show plus loads of free entertainment. Special features to look out for at the Boonah Show are the chain saw races, and the special Swagman Trail. The Horse Report What do you do when you loose a loved animal friend?
Service helps in emotional times Losing a much loved pet or family animal can be a harrowing an emotional time for anyone. Beric and Sue Lees, pet lovers and owners of Pets R.I.P, Toowoomba and Ipswich, understand the heartbreak of losing a loved companion, so they know the love, respect and care needed during this time of grief. Since 2010 a specifically designed pet and equine crematorium was established in Toowoomba. Pets RIP have the only equine cremation in Queensland, because the Lees know no matter what size your pet is, they are all important. Beric has 20 years experience as a human funeral director, owning Casino Funerals and the couple have nearly nine years as a pet funeral directors in Toowoomba. Beric has seen cemeteries go into receivership, in particular the pet crematorium and cemetery, west of Toowoomba. This has left many families unable to visit their departed pets. Beric and Sue, saddened by this loss in people’s lives prompted them to specialise

Planning is never easy with the loss of an equine ‘mate’’ Dealing with a sick or injured horse can be very traumatic but the death of your horse can be even more devastating. Whether the death is sudden, slow or a planned euthanasia the question is what to do next. It is a difficult time to say the least and you can help to alleviate the pain if you are well informed in advance and at least have an outline of a plan of action particularly when thinking about equine cremation. If possible plan ahead if you can. Making decisions at a time of great emotional stress can lead to uncertainty and hurriedly made decisions that may be regretted later. For example not every pet cremation service can cremate large animals. You will most likely have to make arrangements for one to travel to you. If they have to travel some distance you will need to contact them immediately. Most will not collect animals that have been dead two or three days. So co-ordinating the euthanasia and collection is important or if it has happened suddenly notifying the cemetery immediately is essential. Most will be reluctant to collect if the animal has been dead for more than 24 hours. Hot weather may play an important part too. Most large animal cremation services will prefer to collect themselves rather than have the animal delivered. If the horse has passed in the paddock, access should not be a problem but cover it if possible. If it is to be euthanased, select a place that is accessible with a truck or large trailer, reasonably flat with room to maneuver the vehicle. A quite place in a paddock preferably covered in the shade is ideal. A stable is not suitable. The cremation service will arrive in a truck or a trailer. They may need to do a little preparation prior to moving the body. There is no easy way to move a large animal so it will most likely be loaded using a winch or crane. Most vets will inform you that the euthanasia can be quite traumatic and perhaps advise you to say your goodbyes and then leave it to them. The cremation service will in all likely hood advise the same thing. It is better to remember your equine mate as they were rather than as they are at this time. Your horse will be taken immediately to the cremation facility and cremated as soon as possible. Continued page 27

The Horse Report Equine cremations follow the same process as for humans From page 26
Whole horse cremations are offered by the reputable cremation services. This means that the entire horse is cremated - some services may dismember the animal and cremate in sections or only partially cremate it. Don’t be afraid to ask! Ashes are usually returned in an appropriate box of your choice or if a cemetery is doing the cremation you may be able to have the ashes scattered in the cemetery. You can also decide if you want all the ashes (there may be quite a lot) or just a sample. This maybe a practical consideration depending on where and how you wish to keep the ashes. As a matter of information the cremation and the ashes are handled in much the same way as humans. Every care is taken and they are handled in a dignified manner. Very few people fully understand what cremating really is.
Be advised, the following paragraphs are a bit graphic. Cremations are done at temperatures close to 1000F time usually depends on the size of the animal. At these temperatures all the soft tissue is burnt off and any smoke is reburnt so nothing but heat goes into the atmosphere. What is left of your animal are a some ashes and some bones. These are collected and pulverised in a special machine and what is left is referred to as the “Ashes”. This process is the same for humans. Ashes are placed in a sealed a sealed plastic bag and may be in another outer bag or box for convenience and asthetics. The actual cremation will only take a matter of hours. Woodland Pet Cemetery can make arrangements for boxes and plaques will take a little longer and depend on your choices. You can have a plaque engraved with your dedication and attached to the box.
Allow for a turn around time of one to two weeks. Ashes are usually couriered to or returned by Australia Post to your address. Cost will vary, however cremation and collection would be about $1500 plus an allowance for mileage which is likely to be anywhere from $1 to $2 per kilometer plus an allowance for overnight accommodation if required. Usually ashes will be returned in a box and plaques are included in the price but may cost extra depending on your choice. Because of the time and distance often involved in collecting and the cremating if a cancellation is received after collection and cremation it will result in a considerable loss on the part of the cre-
mation service. Be prepared to make your payment at the time of collection. There may be a discount for cash. Some cremation services may offer pre payment plans. Woodland Pet Cemetery located almost equi distant from Sydney and Brisbane near Coffs Harbour and provides a caring and dignified option for the laying your mate to rest. They have been cremating creatures large and small for over 15 years and specialize in whole horse cremations and will travel anywhere in NSW and Southern Qld. Woodland offers a range of services, including a memorial tree sanctuary. For more information visit www. woodlandpetcemetery.com

Olivia Inglis Eventing Scholarship A scholarship for young Eventing riders has been established in memory of Olivia Inglis. The announcement was made recently at the Equestrian New South Wales annual awards dinner. The Olivia Inglis Eventing Scholarship will provide emerging riders with funding to support their training and competition. The Scone Horse Trials Organising Committee initiated the fundraising by donating the remainder of prizemoney from 2016 March event for the memorial fund scholarship. “We are delighted that Equestrian NSW in conjunction with the Australian Sports Foundation will administer this fund, Blair Richardson, President of Scone Horse Trials said at the Awards Night. “The scholarship will be awarded at the Equestrian NSW Annual Awards held in March each year, to help young riders in the sport of Eventing. “These riders can use the funding to obtain extra lessons, or schooling, to help them in their career over the coming years. “It is our sincere hope the fund will achieve four purposes: – - Honour an incredible and all too short life, - Help ease the pain we are all
