Ombudsman looks into horse racing industry Horse trainers should doublecheck the wage rates for their strappers and stable hands, a report released by the Fair Work Ombudsman suggests. Many may be inadvertently paying flat rates of pay below the minimum, random audits of employers throughout the eastern states. The Fair Work Ombudsman has expressed particular concern about its findings in Victoria, where only 31 per cent of employers scrutinised were found to be compliant with federal workplace laws. Compliance rates were significantly higher in NSW (86 per cent) and Queensland (76 per cent). Fair Work inspectors checked the books of 86 horse trainers in metropolitan and regional NSW, Victoria and Queensland in response to almost 100 complaints from employees about underpayments. A report on the outcome of the targeted education and compliance campaign reveals that 52 were compliant, while 34 (40 per cent) collectively recorded a total of 50 contraventions. Fifteen horse trainers were found to have underpaid a total of 61 of their employees almost $40,000, largely because they paid flat rates of pay below the Award rate or had not paid casual employees the minimum daily engagement of three hours. The report said that while there are issues of concern in some areas of the industry, the Fair Work Ombudsman is encouraged by the positive response from employers. Key stakeholders, including Racing NSW, Racing Queensland, Racing Victoria, the Australian Trainers’ Association and the Australian Workers’ Union were consulted and their support enlisted to promote the campaign to their members. A key objective was to inform employers about their obligations and promote the Fair Work Ombudsman’s self-help tools and information and advisory services. State-based results were:

The Fair Work Ombudsman has concluded an inquiry into the horse racing industry, looking at rates of pay.

NSW: Of 29 audits completed, 25 employers (86 per cent) were compliant. Three businesses were found to have underpaid 10 employees a total of $17,038. The largest recovery was $15,874 for eight stable hands in Sydney who were underpaid the minimum hourly rate and weekend penalty rates. QLD: Of 21 audits completed, 16 employers (76 per cent) were compliant. Two businesses were found to have underpaid four employees a total of $3050. The recoveries included $2907 for three stable hands on the Gold Coast who had been underpaid the minimum hourly rate and overtime rates, and $143 for a Toowoomba stable hand underpaid the minimum hourly rate. VIC: Of 36 audits completed, 11 businesses (31 per cent) were compliant. Ten employers were found to have underpaid 47 employees a total of $19,414. The largest recoveries included $5304 for 12 stable hands in the Wimmera underpaid the minimum hourly rate and overtime rates, and $3752 for three workers in Melbourne underpaid the minimum hourly rate. The Horse Report

French training tour provides a total experience about horses and culture By PAULETTE EVANS Frédéric Pignon and Magali Delgado were both born to horse-loving parents in the south of France. They both independently developed quite profound ideas about working with horses and when they married in 2003 it was as if they had been made for one another. Horses became their passion and their family. An extraordinary Lusitano stallion, Templado, entered their lives and showed them that they had not only much to learn about horses but much to "unlearn." The only way to tame this uncompromising but beautiful and talented horse was to go along with his wishes. This "reversal of roles" is now the key to their approach, the success of which has been illustrated by Frédéric's ability to perform in front of huge audiences with free stallions, and by Magali, who, with her horse Dao, has reached the summit of European dressage competition. Frédéric and Magali went on to become the founders of Cavalia which they toured with across the US and European capitals from 2004 to 2009. You can see numerous videos of this amazing horse training duo on the internet. I am always captivated by the beauty and freedom that the horses display when working at liberty with Frédéric. I believe that Frédéric is one of the few people in the world that is performing true liberty. The definition of liberty is freedom of choice. The freedom and fun that horses feel with Frédéric is astonishing to observe. The horses have a strong desire to be with Frédéric and yet they have the freedom of the mind to be able to leave, gallop, buck and feel good in their bodies before returning to Frédéric. If this is not amazing enough, the fact that Frédéric does this with his horses in front of crowds of thousands is simply breathtaking. Magali's approach to riding is equally beautiful. She is passionate about finding harmony with the horse and she does this partly by her focus on relaxation of the horses mind and body. Her horses are not driven or

A week-long training tour with Magali Delgado and Frédéric Pignon offers more than just an education about horses but also about France.

pushed through tension, more than often the horses are slowed down to allow them to relax and let go of the tension. The result is very happy, calm horses that are willing to give so much more. People often remark to Magali that it's unusual to work a dressage horse in high school movements like piaffe and passage without a bit in its mouth. But to Magali, it's natural and easy - no tricks. If the horse has had clear, progressive learning, and is not frightened or confused, and it trusts her, then there is actually no need for tack or equipment to enable the horse to perform these movements. I feel a very strong connection to this way of training and having worked with Frédéric and Magali for a few years I am pleased to be able to offer a small group of people the opportunity to share in this vast knowledge with a week-long

training tour to a town called Monteaux in the south of France from April 7 to 14 this year. When you arrive at the Delgado Farm in Monteaux, Provence it feels like you have entered another world. There is a wonderful sense of excitement in your small group and you can feel that you are about to experience something quite magical. The farm is situated on a hill overlooking the stables that are full of Lusitano and Spanish stallions and then down to a beautiful valley where the Delgado mares can be seen grazing with their youngsters. The old stone home rises up around you on three sides. It is decorated with the love of the family with each adornment having it's own significance. There are large paintings of horses on the outside walls. The artist is actually Frédéric Pignon.

Frédéric Pignon gives horses freedom of mind in training.

Magali Delgado shows elegance and grace in her riding.

It appears that this family is not only gifted in horse training but also in the arts! These enchanting paintings are of the horses that have had a profound effect on their lives and their education in the equine world. The outdoor areas are bought together by the two story high main home built more than 200 years ago with several gîtes (furnished apartments) for the guests to stay in that are also decorated in this provincial "equine" style. Each gîte is named after one of their beloved stallions and is made complete with their portrait in a painting created by Frédéric. You can't help but feel a special connection to that stallion when you enter their gîte and a desire to learn more about them. The family greet you with such warmth that you already feel like friends. Their generosity and care for your well being seems limitless. The food on this trip is a new and delightful experience. Joelle Delgado and daughter Estelle Delgado have a love of food and cooking. They share their family delicacies with you, with several courses for each meal that are all cooked to perfection. Each bite is a new affair and even though you will feel like you haven't stopped eating for the whole week, I am sure you will eagerly await the next meal for the bliss of another new taste sensation. Of course, accompanying each course there is a special local wine, french liquor or perhaps a mix to indulge in! During the week you will be introduced to this wonderful part of Provence. Just about every village in Provence boasts its own workshops and boutiques dedicated to the local specialty. While you'll be taking in all the classic craft towns, you will also be sampling a quintessential slice of Provence, as the two-lane rural back roads wind past olive groves, cherry orchards, vineyards, and the stony medieval hilltop towns. is a rawness to this part of France that is represented in the farms, the people and the food.

French duo’s personal approach breaks down the barriers when it comes to bringing out the best From Page 5

In Australia we seem to always be searching to eat food that is "organic". Here organic is watching a local man ride his rickety bicycle down the gravel road to the farm with his hens eggs in his basket. Here it is a way of life. Each day of the week has been planned so that the learning unfolds like a story book. As the week progresses we will uncover your strengths and desires and work together to create an experience that will give you great insight into how to develop yourself in a way that works with and for your horse. This very personal and positive learning approach makes for a truly inspirational experience for people of all levels of knowledge and confidence. Frédéric and Magali's style with people is similar to that with their horses. They make sure that there are no barriers to learning. Our students have described Frédéric and Magali as both "exceptionally skilled at imparting their profound knowledge on the many facets of horse behaviour both at liberty, high level dressage and the ground work in between”. Comments include “Frederic and Magali's

method of teaching is based on kindness, calmness and sheer enjoyment. Working with them is a lot of fun and very rewarding. “The teaching took place in a completely casual and relaxed environment. “Frederic and Magali taught us so much and yet were so humble and so wonderful to work with." Another student remarked, "Training and riding with Frederic and Magali in France was, for me, like finding the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle you thought you'd never find. “Having trained with Ribbleton before the trip,I thought that the ideology was what I was seeking to follow but getting to actually be in the presence of such joyful and harmonious humans and horses was confirmation and truly inspiring! “I came home with an incredible sense of happiness that I'd struggled to find in my horsemanship before and a feeling that this path is the right one for how I want to be with my horses." Join us for an intimate experience of a lifetime! Email Paulette from Ribbleton at ribbleton@ribbletonwarmbloods.com.au or read more about this trip at www.ribbletonwarmbloods.com.au

MSM MSM has been used in the horse industry for a number of years, sometimes in conjunction with other joint supplements such as glucosamine and chondroiton. Indeed, it has been shown that glucosamine functions more effectively when used in conjunction with an adequate source of sulphur.

The Horse Report

Saddle up for the Year of the Green Wood Horse This is the Year of the Horse according to the Chinese horoscope and The Horse Report decided to ask clairvoyant Elizabeth Thomas to provide an insight into what it holds in store for 2014. It’s not just any horse either, it’s the Year of the Green Wood Horse. The Chinese calendar is the longest chronological record in history dating from 2637BC. This calendar is lunar based. There are 12 moons in a lunar cycle plus an extra moon every 13 moons. The 13th is a Blue Moon which is why the Chinese New Year never falls on the same day; this lunar year started in late January /early February. The New Year of the Green Horse commences its reign January 31, 2014. Up until then, the closing stages of the Snake Year will set the precedent for change and the omens should be more favourable. Action will be the key factor for

everyone in the year ahead. People may become reckless, romantic, and carefree. In love may find toiling a bit more fun than a night on the tiles! It will prove to be a rewarding, but exhausting year ahead. Ensure you do not have too many irons in the fire, leaving energies depleted. Take time to cater to whims and fancies; listen to your senses. The wind may be changing con-

stantly, but once you’ve picked up the scent, follow your intuitions. It’s an ideal year to have children, join social organizations, or do something different like walking over hot coals. The year smiles on those who are not afraid to strike out independently into the unknown, spend energy utterly and to risk improvisation. If you’re a jazz musician, adventurer, take heart. Discover what you are really

made of! Procrastination will be thrust aside, no matter what your occupation. The impulsive influence of the Horse, coupled with self –confidence, dictates your actions, and emotions. Industry, production and the world economy will take an upswing. Tempers may be frayed regarding diplomacy and politics; however good humour will prevail. Brace yourself, the volatile Horse accelerates our pulses, brings tension, stress into everyday lifestyle. His temper’s fast, disposition healthy, erratic. In spite of everything, retain a common sense to financial affairs. It’s largely a matter of individual concentration, effort which enables each and every one of us us to gain the things we desire. The motto for this year should be “Don’t take no for an answer”. “GONG HEE FOT CHOY” (Greeting of Riches”)

The Horse Report

What does the year hold in store?

To contact Elizabeth, email teralda@gamail.com

RAT: (1900, 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008): Remain conservative in assessments or business dealings. Avoid bank transactions at the beginning of the year to avoid pecuniary loss. You may be forced to entertain – have difficulty in recovering funds. Career prospects for advancement and recognition are possible midyear. Romance – work hard to impress soul mates, even then things get bumpy without reason!

RABBIT: (1903, 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011): Being the luckiest of all 12 signs, an opportunistic year indicated. Superior ability accomplished from meeting useful people willing to wield influence on your behalf. Risky ventures are ill advised. The year favours communications – you should see your path clearly, and be more than capable of clearing any hurdles on the road to success.

HORSE: (1906 1918 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014): Recognition, promotion brings happiness and satisfaction. Plans are realized without effort, play your hunches for extra financial gains. Avoid visiting sick people; don’t expose yourself unnecessarily to contagious disease. Beware of accidents – counteract this by donating blood. Resist breaking friendships or partnerships regardless of whose right or wrong!

ROOSTER: (1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005): By expecting too much too soon you’ll encounter many hurdles. Hard yakka, tough line policy regarding thrift, and careful organization does not necessarily signify a basket of eggs! Use politics, diplomacy, make unwilling concessions with competitive types. Exercise intuition. Avoid being tempted to go that way even if the Horse is galloping full speed ahead in the same direction!

OX: (1901, 1913, 1925. 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009) Due to unexpected rapid changes caused by Year of the Horse, those born with a penchant for ‘slow and steady” are unexpectedly caught unawares. Unhappy love, financial affairs cause concern for some. Employment cutbacks, offered a position away from family, or job loss make you unable to honour commitments. Second half of the year should improve.

DRAGON: (1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012) A “mixed bag” type of year – uncertainty, unpleasant surprises lasting temporarily. Working with others rather than going it alone the best option. Curb aggressive explosive behaviour. If the year’s not working out as envisaged – slow down, anticipate less, withdraw from social life slightly – maintain a low profile, regardless of what the year throws at you.

SHEEP: (1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003): A smooth more tranquil year indicated – no gigantic problems on the domestic or work scene. You can gain control and conquer obstructions in your way despite adversities. Monitor health – slight illness or infection possible if you’re neglecting dietary and overall wellbeing. Take heart – some past problem that has concerned you will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

DOG; (1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1996, 2006): An auspicious year – you’ll achieve success, luck; dealing in real estate favoured. Some entertaining, and more travel indicated. Lock up securely. Job changes offered can be overwhelming – you’re spoilt for choice! Select one, or ones appealing – go with the most lucrative. It can prove a daunting prospect for some so –” Don’t bite off more than you can chew”!

TIGER: (1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010): An auspicious year overall – plans proceed smoothly. Promotions and recognition are in store. It should be an easy time to accumulate money, and receive additional income. There will be numerous parties and more entertaining than you envisaged. Should you contemplate getting hitched –– this is the ideal year.

SNAKE: (1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013): Rely on your own intuition regarding investments, real estate or other transactions. Avoid emotional stress, if you want hopes to be fulfilled. Unresolved issues can affect health. Seek friends for extra support required to handle progress that’s not as fast as your own. Overall, any troubles appear temporary.

MONKEY: (1908, 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004): A reasonable year filled with minor worries and frustrations. Difficulties will be resolved if you don’t aim too high. Shoe boils are common but poorly understood By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Shoe boils, or an olecranon bursitis as they are more correctly known, are a relatively common condition that can affect horses and unfortunately, they are often very incorrectly managed, definitely poorly understood and can result in becoming a very significant problem. Just like every problem in life, the key to dealing with a shoe boil is to determine what has caused it, eliminate or negate the cause, and allow the body to go about its business of healing and resolving the issue. This philosophy is without doubt, the key to being a successful veterinarian and the critical element with any problem, is to diagnose it, eliminate the causal factors, and to allow the healing processes to kick in before any permanent damage has developed. Living tissue is amazing in its regenerative powers and most issues can be solved. Shoe boils are a typical case in point. They can be very difficult to deal with, or worse, develop into a major issue. And in both cases, it is almost always because of a failure to eliminate the cause, or unfortunately in many cases, because of inappropriate treatments. A shoe boil is a fluid-filled lump that develops on the back of the elbow on the front leg of the horse. There is a very powerful muscle that attaches to the top and upper back side of the point of the elbow, (Olecranon process).

Page 18

Shoe boils can be difficult to deal with and equally difficult to treat.

This tendon of attachment is very thick, attaches over a fairly wide area and is subjected to enormous strains and pressure, particularly as the horse fully loads its limb when weight bearing in stride. As the muscle contracts at the beginning of lift off, it serves to extend the elbow joint and straighten out the leg for the next stride. The olecranon bursa is a fluid-filled sack that lies between the tendon, attachments, and bone and serves to cushion and help protect the soft tissues from the bone. The joint has a very wide range of movement and the loads are enormous.

The term "bursitis" means inflammation in the bursa and controlling this inflammation is the key to fixing the problem. A critical point that owners often have difficulty understanding is where the term "shoe" comes from and how it can be related. What happens is that when the horse lies down, particularly in the sitting position, the limb has to flex and fold under the horse. What happens then is that the point of the heel of the shoe actually can come in direct contact with the point of the elbow and traumatises the area.

Drainage of shoe boils is no solution

Ph 07 3207 7325

From Page 18

This impact inflames the bursa and creates the shoe boil. A bursa is a fibrous capsule with and active secretory lining on the inside. These cells secrete synovial fluid which lubricates the inside of the bursa and provides the cushion. The most important fact to realise is that this fluid is very dynamic; it is constantly being turned over. That is, the fluid content, every minute of every day, is being secreted and absorbed. When the lining becomes damaged or inflamed, the cells begin to secrete fluid at a much greater rate than it can be absorbed and so the sack expands like a balloon as it fills with the excess fluid. This is where failure to understand this concept can cause so much trouble with shoe boils. Most people want to "drain" the fluid to fix the problem. This is absolutely useless because as soon as the fluid is removed, more is secreted to refill the cavity and the balloon returns. Unfortunately, sticking a needle in to drain, very often introduces infection and then we have a real problem. Even without infection, the placement of the needle bruises the tissues more and actually increases the inflammation. Certainly, many shoe boils can be helped by drainage, as long as the removal of the fluid is accompanied by the injection of cortisone into the cavity. Cortisone is a very powerful anti inflammatory agent which serves to immediately put the fire out, stop the secretion, and allow the normal cellular drainage to remove the excess fluid. This process will certainly help, but it is useless if the original cause has not been addressed. The most important element in dealing with shoe boils is to stop the shoe hitting the elbow. Almost always, shoe boils appear after some change in management of the horse. Most commonly this has been a very recent shoeing where inadvertently, the heel of the shoe now is in a slightly different position and will impact on the elbow. Obviously the shoe must be changed.

FREE REPORT:

DO NOT BREED YOUR MARE UNTIL YOU HAVE READ OUR SPECIAL REPORT A pastern roll pad can be useful in treating shoe boils.

Removing the shoes obviously is a possibility but in most cases, assessment of the type of shoe will allow some recommendation for change. Very often, it can simply be either shortening the length of the branch, or grinding the bottom of the heel off to form a bevel that will be a smoother projection. Each situation is different and so must be evaluated, but one thing is for certain, if nothing is changed, the shoe boil will remain and probably get bigger. Very commonly, there has also been a recent change in accommodation or the surface where the horse lies. Obviously this must be considered and addressed. A useful tool can be a "Pastern Roll" which is a soft sausage like cushion that can be strapped onto the back of the pastern so that as the leg folds, it will now be in a different position and not touch the elbow. Shoe boils can be quite spectacular to look at, are always unsightly, rarely cause lameness, and can be easily dealt with if the cause is removed and the inflammation quelled. Because of the loads when moving, this may require a short spell, (4 - 6 weeks), and a course of phenylbutazone early on when acute. More chronic cases may require cortisone. They very definitely do not require drainage on its own, or the application of any of the myriad ointments and lotions that horse owners use. Attempts at surgical removal, which some owner's request, would probably, in my opinion, have the potential to be a major disaster because of the tremendous movement that occurs in the region. Sutures are almost guaranteed to pull out and leave a dreadful open wound.

The Horse Report

Understanding Tying-up in horses Supplied by Hy Gain Feeds Pty Ltd Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, Tying-up, Azoturia, Monday Morning Sickness and Poly Saccharide Storage Myopathy are all names of common muscle metabolism problems. The scientific name for Tying-up is rhabdomyolysis, which simply translated means muscle (rhabdo) breakdown (lysis). The causes are several but the result is the same, muscle cramping. In this condition, there is massive contraction of the muscle groups along the back and rump of the horse. The muscles contract and do not relax. The horse will appear to be nailed to the floor in the back end while seemingly being able to move the front end without any problems. They will appear to be in significant pain. When you press your hands along the muscles on either side of the spine, they feel rock hard. The horse’s temperature may elevate up to 40 or 40.5 degrees. If the cramping is severe enough then the myoglobin released from the damaged muscle goes from blood to kidneys and into the urine, turning the urine a dark red colour. Eventually this can cause severe problems with the kidneys. Most cases of Tying-up are not that severe and usually present in a horse that has been off for several days and is then exercised aggressively. In the middle of the ride (or sometimes right at the end) the horse’s stride shortens and he cramps up. Muscle disorders are a frequent cause of poor performance in horses and Tying-up is the most common syndrome. It is often mistakenly assumed that any horse with muscle pain or cramping after exercise has ‘tied-up’, and because of this there is a lot of confusion and controversy around the diagnosis, causes and management of affected horses. However, although a number of different muscle conditions produce the same signs, there are basically two types of true ‘Tyingup’- acute and chronic. Signs of Tying-up The signs of tying up vary with the severity of the condition and the speed of onset. In mild cases, the horse’s gait gradually stiffens and he becomes reluctant to move. The muscles are actually cramping. The large, heavy muscles of the hind legs are most often affected but the triceps muscles above the elbow of the front legs may also appear stiff and painful. The horse often begins sweating profusely, his heart and respiratory rate may also increase dramatically. The affected horse may appear to be colicing but the major difference is that in horses that are tying-up, the large muscle of the hind legs will be firm or very hard and the horse will paw the ground or attempt to lie down. In extreme cases of tying up, the large muscles of the hind legs may actually appear to bulge. If there is enough muscle damage, the horse’s urine will turn a dark, reddish-brown colour as the damaged muscle fibres release Page 20

myoglobin, which then passes in the urine. Horses that tie up usually have a recurring problem, associated with a specific set of circumstances. When horses worked for a living, a common problem was “Monday morning’s disease.” This problem occurred when horses, which were working all week, did not have their grain cut back while resting over the weekend. Some horses tie up when they become excited, at a show, breeding, or travelling. Other horses develop the problem when exercised. Occasionally you run into the horse that ties up for no reason you can detect. Moderate to severe cases are not hard to diagnose. The stiffness in the rear limbs and hard painful muscles are easily seen. But mild cases may present as decreased performance or a vague lameness originating in the back or hind end. In cases of possible tying up the diagnosis can be confirmed with blood tests for increase levels of muscle enzymes. Causes of Tying-up A horse that is prone to tying up can be sensitive to several different things. It may not be feasible or necessary to fix them all. Learn what factors trigger an attack in your horse and work to minimize those. Work with training, spelling, feed, and environmental stress. Keep a diary to look for patterns. There have been several proposed causes for Tying-up. The different histories and varying treatments that horses respond to, suggest that there are several different diseases. Some proposed causes are: Altered carbohydrate metabolism in the horse

work has identified abnormal carbohydrate metabolism as a cause in many breeds of Tying-up Hypotension / Nervousness Electrolyte imbalances – Horses which tie up during or following exercise frequently have electrolyte imbalances. These imbalances cannot be diagnosed with simple blood testing. Mineral deficiency (Ca, Mg, P, K and Se) Lactate build up Too little oxygen getting to the muscles Vitamin E \ Selenium deficiencies Hypothyroidism Hormone imbalances Dehydration Ca : P Ratio imbalanced Imbalanced mineral ratios in diet Over exertion in training Dramatic changes in training Genetic Inheritance Types of Tying-up Based on our current knowledge, horses which experience episodes of Tying-up can be placed in one of two broad categories: - Sporadic (acute) exertional rhabdomyolysis – this classification applies to horses which, on rare occasion, experience an episode of generalized tying-up. This will generally involve muscle stiffness and cramps. - Chronic exertional rhabdomyolysis – when a horse experiences repeated episodes of ER, with the first episode usually occurring at a young age. This can be quite a problem and may eventually over repeated bouts of Tying-up cause irreversible muscle damage. A researcher, Dr Valberg identified a different inherited condition in Quarter horses, Appaloosas, Paints, Warmbloods and some Thoroughbreds. This is known as a Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM). Affected horses have up to one-and-a-half times more glycogen in their muscle cells than normal horses and this can be identified with special staining techniques on muscle biopsies. Affected horses have an enhanced glucose clearance test and increased insulin sensitivity. This explains why they are very gooddoers or easy keepers. The signs are the same as common Tying-up. Management of Tying-up Diet and exercise are closely linked to Tyingup and the most important preventative strategies are based upon diet and exercise management. Dietary management Essential in this is the provision of a diet with: A minimum level of grain – High cereal grain diets can overload the normal digestive processes of the small intestine so that the caecum and colon of the large intestine are flooded with un-digested and semidigested grains. Undigested nutrients reaching the large intestine are fermented, which results in increased lactic acid production, fluctuations in blood glucose and hormone levels and increased heat of digestion. Management counters Tying-up From page 20 – which the horse must sweat to cool – increasing fluid and electrolyte losses Balanced vitamin and mineral levels – especially vitamin E and selenium The correct amounts and ratios of the different electrolytes A high percentage of oil Oils provide slow release energy and maintain steady blood glucose levels. Blood lactate levels are lower in horses on high oil diets Good quality hay Supplements to reduce nervousness / stress such as Thiamine, Magnesium and Chromium Many quality feed manufacturers around the world design feeds especially for horses that are prone to Tying-up. HYGAIN® RELEASE® is specifically formulated for this purpose. It is designed to be low in starch, (carbohydrates) high in fat can be fed with more roughage than is usually fed to performance horses. HYGAIN® RELEASE® is also high in Vitamin E & C as well as selenium, magnesium and calcium. It is imperative when you are using an electrolyte that is balanced. Simply that means feeding your horse the same levels of electrolytes that are lost. It has been formulated to mimic the electrolyte levels actually lost in the horse’s sweat. When grains are processed such as micronizing, the starch is rapidly digested in the small intestine which reduces the burden on the large intestine. An over burden on the large intestine can result in problems such as colic, laminitis and tying up. Exercise schedule This will vary between horses according to fitness, metabolic rate and individual variation, but several basic principles appear to be beneficial: A consistent, structured program with no rest days Grading the level of exercise with a slow increase in intensity as fitness develops Hard work should be followed with a slow trot or canter to stimulate the delivery of oxygen to the muscles, and the removal of lactic acid from the muscles to the liver Adequate warming up and cooling down of horse. Management practices Avoid stress and excitement – It is desirable to reduce fizzy, restless behaviour especially in highly excitable horses. The ‘heating’ effect of cereal grains results from rapid fermentation in the caecum, producing abrupt rises in blood glucose and energy levels. Rapid changes in blood glucose levels cause fluctuations in insulin, cortisol and thyroid hormones, stimulating metabolic rate and restless behaviour. Processed grain such as micronizing does not have the same effects as

unprocessed grains. Stabled horses may become bored, nibbling and chewing wood, stable fittings and bedding. Frequent smaller feeds prolong chewing time, reducing boredom. Medication may be required in some horses and the particular therapy prescribed is based on clinical and laboratory investigations. Veterinary Treatment A mild case of Tying-up may be treated with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (i.e. Phenylbutazone) and rest for 3-5 days with a gradual increase in exercise. A decrease in training intensity and grain intake will usually be recommended. Sedatives such as Acepromazine which causes sedation and relaxation by depressing the central nervous system, may be given to decrease the anxiety and spasms after the horse ties up. In some chronic cases, Acepromazine may be used in a preventative effort prior to exercise, to help promote vasodilatation or opening of the outlying blood vessels. Veterinarians may give the horses immediate intravenous Thiamine or intramuscular Vitamin E and Selenium injections to aid return to health or monthly prophylactic injections to decrease potential onset of tying up episodes. Horses exhibiting severe symptoms of tying up may be treated with intravenous fluids to decrease potential kidney damage due to the myoglobin excretion and shock. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and/or painkillers may be necessary during recovery time. As with mild cases, a sedative may be used to decrease the anxiety and help prevent thrashing or excess movement. In severe cases, it is critical to limit movement to decrease potential permanent muscle damage. Recovery time may be up to 6-8 weeks. Horses that suffer from chronic attacks of tying up can often be managed successfully with strict exercise, management and diet protocols. A diet balanced for mineral and vitamin needs that provide a good quality hay, water, and minimal grain may control some cases of chronic tying up. Reduce stressful situations and provide a consistent and calm environment may help as well. Some horses may need to be maintained on sedatives prior to exercise or daily medication to decrease or prevent muscle damage during tying-up episodes. There is no cure for horses with chronic forms of Tying-up. These conditions have also been shown to be inherited in some bloodlines. Easy solution to horse feed dilemma By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist What happens when you walk into your local feed store and you see an array of different types of horse feed? This can be quite daunting so I'm going to provide you with an easy solution to feeding your horse, one that will provide the horse with the correct nutrient intake on a daily basis. We live in a world now where time is very precious, we don't wish to waste time unnecessarily we need to ensure that our time is well managed as are our horses. It is not difficult to feed a horse, their needs are quite simple, their management quite simple, they have evolved to graze almost consistently throughout the day. We are very blessed to be in a country where our horses are able to be outdoors most of the time. Those of you who stable your horses, it becomes more important for you to ensure that your horse is being provided enough roughage every day. What you feed your horse, will depend on the workload and many other aspects such as the breed of the horse and its age. Feeding will also involve other forms of management such as maintaining the health of the horse's teeth, a good worming program and body management. Stress can be a huge factor in your horse's overall health and well-being. Because our lives are so full in today's world it is important to ensure that our time spent with the horse is mentally healthy and relaxing for him or her and for you. There are many ways to approach feeding your horse, you can go to all the trouble of buying all the different types of feed such as oaten chaff, lucerne chaff, oats or barley and different types of hay plus a good daily supplement. Then there are the different types and brands of feed, but come in various forms sweet feeds, pellets and all types of processed feeds. Let's look at the pellets to begin with, when a pellet is produced it is powdered before it is manufactured. Does this encourage normal chewing of the horse? The answer is no - we need to ensure that our horses are encouraged to chew and grind the feed efficiently. If we do not than the horse’s digestive process will be interfered with and this may lead to digestive upsets such as colic or diarrhoea. Minor complications may be loss of appetite but one major concern is an increase in the diagnosis of ulcers in horses. Soaking hay in water is quite common these Page 28

Roughage is essentially the most important part of your horse’s diet.

days, supposedly to reduce dust and to reduce nonstructural carbohydrates NSC. This is also used for horses that suffer from respiratory or metabolic conditions. However, soaking of hay can actually reduce essential nutrients such as phosphorus and magnesium. There have been good studies performed to look at the difference between steaming hay and soaking. When hays are being harvested in poor drying conditions and adverse weather, it could mean that the hay may be baled before it has sufficient moisture to ensure longevity. Mould is possibly one of the most irritable aspects of hay and is very commonly found. It is important to reduce the mould and dust particles which will always appear when a horse is being fed hay or chaffs. Stabled horses will suffer more than horses out on pasture. There are two problems - the dust and mould in the hay and chaffs and the dust and mould contained in horse bedding. Horses that do have a history of respiratory disease certainly need special care. Clearly it is time-consuming to soak hay. There is no doubt that hay forms a very important part of your horse’s diet, roughage being essentially the most important part of the diet. A reasonably new process of steaming hays with added minerals, herbs, vitamins and some grains and oil to form a high roughage pellet has now reached the market. There have certainly been hay cubes produced before but nothing like this process. To my knowledge, there is only one company producing this type of product in the world market. These pellets are not powdered before being manufactured they are simply cut and then steamed they do not reach temperatures above 70°C which simply means that the molecular structure is not affected, in fact the nutritional value is actually increased.

Independent studies have shown that horses actually slow down their chewing process whilst being fed this type of feed. This has several advantages - one being the horse will not develop bad habits whereby he rushes his food and two, if the horse chews and grinds his food slowly and is not rushed then he will benefit greatly. It also means that there will be a reduction in digestive upsets. The other benefit of this type of feeding is at the nutritional value is literally guaranteed, there is no waste, they are very convenient to use and can be transported anywhere. There is no doubt that the feed industry uses many different types of by products in pelleting and premix production. I recommend this type of feed to almost all horse owners and riders as I have great confidence in this type of product. In my opinion the most important part of the horse’s diet will always be roughage feeding a pellet such as the above plus hay and grazing should provide most horses with an adequate daily nutritional intake. Ultrafeeds launch their new all Australian-made lucerne and beet feed Ultrafeeds are pleased to launch their new feed, Alfabeet. Alfabeet is an Australian-made product that incorporates quality Australian grown lucerne and the imported sugar beet pulp product Ultrabeet. The Ultrabeet has been milled in Australia to reduce particle size prior to being added to the lucerne. In addition to the lucerne and Ultrabeet, Alfabeet has been fortified with additional Biotin, zinc and copper. Alfabeet is a super fibre that contains high fibre and moderate “cool” energy. Alfabeet is unique in that it replaces both forage and grain. Alfabeet is high in soluble fibre, low in starch and water soluble carbohydrates (often referred to as sugar) and is a great source of desirable slow release energy. And being fortified, Alfabeet is ideally suited for all horses including those at risk of laminitis and can be fed dry or soaked. Soaking Alfabeet may assist older horses and horses suffering from dental disorders. When soaking simply add Alfabeet with water at the rate of one part Alfabeet to three to five parts water. Alfabeet is in a convenient cube that encourages the horse to chew. You can actually see the fibre length of the lucerne. It is not made from the lucerne dust and fines often left over from the chaffing process and used in some other lucerne based products. Alfabeet uses premium grade lucerne, compressed to minimise dust and wastage. Many people involved in the racing and performance horse industry now understand the benefit to the stomach and the digestive system from horses producing saliva as a result of chewing their feed, particularly a source of quality fibre. Whilst the nutrient specifications are great for a horse in light work and those at risk of laminitis, Alfabeet is an ideal component of a ration for horses in medium to heavy work.

For horses in medium to heavy work, Alfabeet should be fed as part of a balanced ration that includes a quality hard feed. Many hard feeds contain additional nutrients necessary for the health and wellbeing of horses in medium to hard work. The nutrient specifications of lucerne and sugar beet pulp when fed individually often raise concerns over the high protein levels of the lucerne and the low protein levels of sugar beet. Combining the two together creates a product that has a balance of nutrition with a minimum protein level of 16% and NDF (Neutral Detergent Fibre) of 40% with an exceptional Digestibility of over 65%. The starch of <0.7% and WSC of <5% are great comfort for horse owners looking for a low sugar diet and for a feed that does not increase the risks associated with horses tying up. Alfabeet contains zinc at 150Mg/Kg, Biotin 15Mg/Kg and copper at 46Mg/Kg. Zinc, copper and Biotin are generally known to deliver benefits to general health and wellbeing with a focus on horses coat and hooves. This supports what a great beneficial qualities Alfabeet has for horses at risk of laminitis and older horses. “Ultrafeeds are excited to introduce an Australian made product that replaces both forage and grain,” Phil Candy the National Sales Manager for Ultrafeeds said. “With many horses owners looking for lower grain inputs and starting to understand the benefits of effective fibre Alfabeet can be a great low sugar low starch option in the feed room.” Alfabeet is available now but like any new product, it takes some time to reach all corners of Australia. If you can’t find it in store straight away simply go to the website www.ultrafeeds.com.au and via email let Ultrafeeds know your location and favourite store. With representatives across Australia and storage in NSW, Victoria and Queensland Alfabeet should be readily accessible to your favourite store.

The Horse Report

Confidence Is ......Trust By TANJA KRAUS Tanja Kraus Horsemanship I speak to a lot of people about their horses on a weekly basis, and one of the common things we talk about is a confidence issue. Often this issue is not about a particular 'action' by the horse the current owner has most of the time it is due to a previous fall (often off a different horse), or mostly, due to time off after having kids. It is a very common 'phenomenon' if you like and usually is not related to actually taking a break or having time away from riding, but nature stepping in, and kicking those mothering instincts into overdrive - you now have a higher need for self preservation, as you have little people that you need to take care of. I have seen this cause people to give up riding altogether. You may not be able to reclaim the confidence of your teen years soaring over the cross country jumps without a care, jumping on any horse offered, or racing your friends along the beach, but you can reclaim the confidence you need to enjoy your horse once again. In my opinion, confidence is a double sided coin - you need to be able to trust your horse, so you can go for a nice quiet ride, and he needs to be able to trust you so he can give you that ride. Taking a new approach to your horse, and building a set of skills and exercises that you can go through, to allow you the time to read your horses body language - and he yours, can help to establish a happy 'start' to a ride. Knowledge is power, and having the knowledge to read your horse, determine what he needs, execute the exercises and arrive at a good place will set you up for success and confidence.

CONFIDENCE CAMP

With Tanja Kraus & Susan Weil

Your horse needs to have trust and confidence in you, and you need to have trust and confidence in your horse. I know that this is not always the case, I myself have been nervous before, and anxious about riding after a spill. Its no fun, and it certainly can ruin a ride. We are running a confidence course like no other - I will be coaching the horsemanship side of things, helping you build trust in your horse, and he in you. Helping you read his body language, and he yours, so you can better understand each other. I promise you will get a better connection and understanding of your horse - so what makes this course dierent from all the others ? We have a people expert too! Susan Weil is an experienced therapist, and her philosophies fit well with my horsemanship program. Susan also enjoys riding her own horse which gives her a unique insight to what it means to be a horse owner and rider. Susan will be at the camp for the full 5 days to coach us through our 'human' responses and to give us techniques to use in 'real time'. Her website and more info can be found at http://beachhousetherapies.com/Massage_Yoga_in_Bellingen/ counselling.html This 5 day course is going to change your horse relationship forever. Located at the fantastic grounds of the Cabarita beach pony club, cost includes the full course both horsemanship and human coaching, stabling, camping, morning and afternoon tea. $750 per person. What if you had the knowledge to run through a set of drills before riding which would allow you to read your horses attitude for that day ? Would that help you be more confident each ride ? If you found that your horse was a little boisterous on a particular day and you had the tools to help fix that, would that help ? I can give you the answer - and thats yes. And I can also tell you that your horse will be happier for it! Can you imagine what it is like for him to be a little fresh, and you arrive at the paddock for a ride, take a look at him, realize he is fresh, lunge him until he's sweaty, and then hop on and grip on for dear life - and here is your horse thinking 'geez, there must be something scary around here, because mum sure is hanging on tight today' - I better prance around to show her i've got the energy to run if she needs it, and Id better look around myself in case she doesn't see it coming. You're smiling right now because that is what happens! Trust is (as per the dictionary) a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something. You need to be able to trust your horse and he needs to be able to trust you! Lets look at those words - reliability - comes through repetition, training and consistency. Truth comes through consistency. Ability comes through training, and strength comes through repetition and consistency. If you knew what your horses reaction to something would be - you could trust him. If you knew what his reaction would be and you didn't like it you could train him to have a different reaction. If you have confidence issues when it comes to your horse or riding take the time to sit for a minute and really think about where the problem lies - has he done something ? Can it be trained out of him ? Does he lack confidence in you as a leader - can that be trained ? Is it you who needs some tools to help with your anxiety or fears ? Is it both of you ? Maybe its worth talking to a professional (counsellor, therapist etc). Some people may think that this is an extreme measure but I don't see a problem with it - If I have a problem with my car, I take it to a mechanic, because I don't know enough about cars - if i've got a problem with anxiety - then I need to talk to an expert in anxiety!

Horse feeder windows offer safety without stress Supplied by AJ PLASTICS Last month we met, Nancy , a likeable accountant, classic car owner, and "mother" to three very interesting horses, all with their own adorable personalities. Two are enormous, the American Saddle bred stands at 16 hh and the other is lovely leggy thoroughbred standing at 170 cm tall (16.3 hh) and her Oldenburg cross daughter is following in her footsteps. In early January, Nancy took a road trip with two friends to spend some time at Tamworth's Australian Equestrian and Livestock Events Centre for the Buck Brannaman clinic. He is a real cowboy, natural horseman and the inspiration behind the book and movie The Horse Whisperer. In 2011 there was a documentary of his amazing and troubled life called Buck, it's a must see for all even if you're not a horse lover. Nancy was full of praise for the clinic. “It was inspirational, I learned more about the nature of horses in three days than I did in years of riding lessons, he really knows how horses work,” she said. “Buck has such a presence about him when he left the arena for the last time it felt like he took the air out of the building with him and we all felt like we had lost a friend. The Horse Report

National board formalising Hendra vaccination policies The Equestrian Australia (EA) national board has moved to establish a working group to begin the process of formalising the organisation's policies for Hendra vaccination and biosecurity. The policies, which are expected to be ratified for implementation on July 1 this year, will outline the Hendra vaccination requirements for horses which attend EA and FEI sanctioned events in Australia. Equestrian Australia CEO Grant Baldock said the working group had several viewpoints to consider. “In determining the most feasible and effective Hendra vaccination policy for the sport, the working group is considering all positions from a risk perspective, one of which is vaccination of horses that attend higher risk events, through to a self-managed process overseen by clubs and event organisers,” Mr Baldock said. “What has been agreed upon is the understanding that vaccination provides the best way to mitigate disease outbreaks at EA events." “Any future vaccination requirements will be accompanied by a significant notice period to allow horse owners to comply with the policy. Event organisers can also be assured that they will be assisted by each state office in implementing the new national HeV policy, as this is quite a significant change for all involved in the sport.” In July last year, Equestrian NSW (ENSW) implemented a policy requiring vaccination for horses attending certain EA and FEI events.

This policy implementation has since been moved back to coincide with a national approach. Equestrian NSW CEO Bruce Farrar, said that his Board remained committed to Hendra vaccination of all horses at high risk competitions and was critically aware of the serious impacts on riders, horses and event organisers if Hendra or suspected Hendra occurred at an event. "Equestrian Qld, while continuing to endorse and promote a voluntary policy towards Hendra vaccination, is very pleased with the progress the working party has made to date in examining the elements necessary to ensure we put in place a practical approach to dealing with this issue, that not only meets the needs of the sport and its participants but is also legally compliant, from a Workplace Health and Safety perspective,” he said. Equestrian Queensland’s Rob Ferguson said EQ would like to reassure members and clubs that the current policy of voluntary vaccination will remain in place until such time that we are comfortable that any policy proposed is one that reflects the advice received as well as being the best fit for the sport.
