FOUNDER’S MESSAGE In March of 2001 I migrated from the Bay Area to Sacramento - me and my late sister Toochie with our children moved together to South Sacramento! We would wake up talking about how we had landed in the “land of milk & honey”. Toochie was the first to land a job at Another Look Hair Salon and I started as a temp at UC Davis Med Center in the Facility Design & Construction Dept as a Contract Analyst. Mannn, those were some great days even though it took us awhile to get used to Sacramento (back then referred a lot to as CowTown). Back then we were so bored on weekends we would go back to visit my hometown - East Palo Alto every weekend because we had no idea of what to do or what was going on in Sacramento. We then convinced my mom to move and she came with the rest of my brothers and sister in September 2001. Soon though I started finding out what was happening via the barbershop/ salon (namely Another Look) with the hair shows, Black Expo, church events, local concerts, etc. Anywho, things got to brewing while I was working full-time at UC Davis and I started creating a Black entertainment newsletter in November 2001 and launched a 5-page website Sacculturalhub. com in March 2002 with the help of a UC

Davis graduate, Rodney Blackwell who worked at the copy center at the Med Center. Little did I know this website along with our text e-newsletter (at that time sent weekly) and THE HUB Magazine would blow up into a central HUB (what I had started calling Black Sacramento) of exciting events and resources for Black people in Sacramento and beyond. This 20-year journey in the media/entertainment business has been extraordinarily fulfilling with meeting thousands of wonderful/exceptional people through Sac Cultural Hub. WORDS CANNOT TRULY EXPRESS my gratitude for so many folks who WELCOMED me with open arms when I started Sacculturalhub.com and started sharing my ideas and vision for what I wanted to do! They say that when you write stuff down, speak it into existence, network and connect with key folks, and be DIRECT with your asks of people, speak to the need of the people, and prove your follow-thru > YOU will be received, needed, acknowledged and in most cases supported! I can certainly ATTEST to this!!! In National Women’s History Month Sac Cultural Hub celebrates it 20th Year Anniversary Gala with Pleshette Robertson, CEO & Founder/Chief Editor of THE HUB Magazine celebrating 20 years in business. Thank you for supporting this grand celebration of a Black-woman owned media agency-Sac Cultural Hub Media Company successfully doing business for the past 20 years in the State of California. Sac Cultural Hub pledges to continue beyond its 20th year with 20 plus years in serving the African American community with resources along with business/entertainment news that impacts their lifestyle.

CELEBRITY ENTERTAINMENT CLUB NOUVEAU

is an R&B-pop band that was formed by record producer/ performer Jay King in 1986 in Sacramento, California, subsequent to the breakup of the Timex Social Club. Other members of Club Nouveau included original members Denzel Foster, Thomas McElroy, Samuelle Prater, and Valerie Watson. Additional members include James L. Richard II, Kevin Irving, David Agent, Walter Phillips, and Mario Corbino. The band’s name (French for “New Club”) was changed from its original incarnation, Jet Set, to exploit the breakup of the Timex Social Club. The group was signed by Warner Bros. Records, on which Club Nouveau released its first three albums. From its debut album, Life, Love, and Pain, which was released in 1986, the group scored four consecutive hits: “Jealousy” (essentially an answer song responding to Timex Social Club’s hit “Rumors”), “Situation #9,” a cover of Bill Withers’s “Lean on Me,” and “Why You Treat Me So Bad.” The latter was interpolated by the Luniz on that group’s hit single “I Got Five on It” and subsequently by Puff Daddy on “Satisfy You.” The latter two both made it to #2 on the Billboard R&B chart the next year, with “Lean on Me” becoming a big Billboard Hot 100 hit. “Jealousy” also made an appearance on the soundtrack of the film Modern Girls. Foster and McElroy soon left to form their own production team and focus on working with other acts. Prater, who had performed the lead vocals on “Lean on Me”, eventually left as well to pursue a solo career. The replacements were David Agent and Kevin Irving. The group’s next albums—beginning with 1988 Listen to the Message—were laced with an evolving social consciousness, though the later albums were not as successful commercially as the group’s debut. Notable recordings include a dancehallinfluenced version of the gospel classic “Oh, Happy Day” from the 1992 album A New Beginning, “Let It Go” from the 1995 Everything Is Black album, “You Ain’t No Friend Of Mine” from the 1989 Under A Nouveau Groove album and “What Kind Of Love” from the 1998 Collection Volume I album. As of 2013, the current Club Nouveau roster consists of Jay King, Valerie Watson English, and Samuelle Prater the original vocalists. They are working on a new Club Nouveau album “Consciousness” to be released in the spring of 2014 and the

10

single “That Ain’t Love” to be released in October of 2013. Club Nouveau is going to issue a greatest hits project in the fall of 2014 which will include versions of “Rumors” & “Thinking About You” that have never been released before…. The band also recorded a song for the Who’s That Girl soundtrack called “Step by Step. Club Nouveau was nominated for two Grammy’s (song of the year – lean on me & best new act) Club Nouveau’s version of “Lean on Me” won a Grammy award, nominated for two American music awards, nominated and won a Bammy award, nominated and won a BRE Drummer award, Nominated and won two Narm awards, nominated and won a Bay Area Star award. A LOOK BACK ON 20 YEARS WERE YOU THERE?

2019 BLACK PHYSICIANS FORUM ON MAY 3, 2019 By Contributing Writer, Valarie Scruggs

The 2019 Black Physicians Forum speakers were outstanding as they presented on: “Implicit Bias Awareness: Where Do We Go From Here?” at the UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento. Leon McDougle, MD, MPH (Chief Diversity Officer, Professor of Family Medicine, The Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Center); Stacie L. Walton, MD, MPH (Retired Clinical Pediatrician Diversity Champion and Communication Consultant); Piri AckermanBarger, PhD, RN (Assistant Clinical Professor Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing); and MC/Host Flojuane Cofer, PhD, MPH (Women’s Health Epidemiologist & Senior Director of Policy at Public Health Advocates) gave the audience an incredible perspective and tools to address implicit bias operating in health care starting with the educational system and moving into the exam room. Often medical literature discusses the bias that contributes to health disparities among African Americans and other people of color. However, the impact of implicit bias on medical professionals of color whose job it is to provide care to all people is rarely included in the discussion. Medical professionals of color are subjected to bias from both patients and colleagues. Microaggressions such as patients assuming they are housekeeping staff, a patient refusing their assistance in delivering a baby for solely racial reasons, and colleagues who question their medical opinions more readily than other colleagues that are not of color are but a few of the examples shared. There is a role to play for everyone to begin reducing implicit bias in health care. Step 1 is checking to ensure that you are not the source of implicit bias. Being honest and asking where one’s ideas and perceptions come from is key. The assumptions we make when we’re not fully present or rushed can also have negative impacts on others. Step 2 if you’re the recipient of implicit bias microaggressions give yourself a break. It’s not always easy or necessary to respond immediately to these issues. Practice self-care, take time to gain perspective and heal. Step 3 if you are the innocent bystander witnessing implicit bias microaggressions, speak up. It may just be acknowledging that something off was said or didn’t feel right. The bystander can help to create an environment where these problems can be acknowledged and discussed which is key to moving past them. UC Davis Health is doing wonderful things to help address implicit bias. Working with medical students, providing mentors, and conducting training for staff are a few of the ways UC Davis Health Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is working to keep medical students in their programs and create a culture in medical care that offers high quality services to both staff and patients. 2007 Hub Choice Awards Show Shout-outs Dr. and Mrs. Bean

“I’m proud to see how far Sac Hub has come. I met Pleshette at an African-American faculty and staff gathering for UC Davis and UC Davis MED Center. I introduced myself to her, and Pleshette told me about what she was going to be starting here in Sacramento. I praised her for this, and she has been quite successful. “I remember when I signed up on Pleshette’s e-mail list. I told several colleagues about her and forwarded information to everyone I knew. I also attended events Pleshette promoted to support what she believed in. “And now look where she is. Everyone knows about Sac Hub. Pleshette, my blessings to you and keep up the good work. You and your staff have grown so much, from the Web site design, layout, contacts, events and best of all—the first-annual Hub Choice Awards.
