The Viking’s hockey team claims a landslide victory with a score of 6-2 in their final home game against UAlbany Club.

“If the other team were to win that would mean they had to get through us. I don’t think that was possible for them,” said Jeffrey Smith, a sophomore mechanical engineer major.

Sophomore business administration major Sean Spohr scored the Viking’s their first goal 3:10 into the game. Spohr made the second goal of the game in the third period.

By the end of the game sophomore criminal justice major Chris Breault added two more goals to the score. Sophomore criminal justice major, Tyler DeMarco, and HVAC major, Evan Perkins, each contributed one goal, securing the Viking’s victory.

gy major, alongside Smith and the team’s goalies, made a total of 12 saves.

Smith felt the biggest threats to their team were two players on the UAlbany team.“Player 17 was a huge guy and really talented at skating, while 6 was quick and incredibly agile,” said Smith. “We knew if we shut them down and we would be able to shut the team down.”

Ann Carrozza has made many contributions to Hudson Valley over the past 28 years.

By: Anthony O’Connell News Editor Ann Carrozza will be retiring this year as executive director of the Faculty Student Association after 28 years of service.

“This has been a great place to work,” said Carrozza. “I know I’ve done a lot here but the organization has done a lot for me as well [and] I will be forever grateful for that.”

The FSA is a non-profit organization that operates free from certain restrictions that the college must follow. This includes running the daycare, bookstore, food service and vending, student

activities and more. The FSA has also contributed over $1 million to the Outdoor Athletic Complex, sponsored student projects, events on campus and funded renovation for the football locker room.

Carrozza believes that her most rewarding and enjoyable experiences with the FSA have been collaborations with students.

“What the FSA does is more entrepreneurial in nature than what the college does,” said Carrozza. “We run businesses on campus for the benefit of students and the college.”

Under Carrozza, the FSA has bought and sold land twice with

one of these two purchases expanding the campus’ entrance.

One of these purchases involved a property located on the north end of route 4 which was offered to the college by the estate of a dead man. The county blocked the college from accepting the land, but Hudson Valley was able to obtain the property through the FSA’s purchase of the property.

“The entrance that you see now did not exist many years ago, it was just two little lanes which caused constant traffic jams,” said Carrozza.

Carrozza told the FSA Board of Directors that she wanted whoever takes over her position to be more successful than she was.

“You don’t work here for as long as I did and not want it to continue and get better,” she said.

At their January board meeting, Alycia Courter was named the new FSA executive director.

Courter has worked on the FSA for nearly 20 years, starting her career as a student hire at the college at 19-years-old.

“My goal is to continue with the FSA being as successful as Ann has made it over her tenure,” said Courter.

Working with Carrozza for almost 20 years, Courter believes she has learned everything she

knows from Carrozza.

“We are very much alike, we are always thinking about what’s the next best thing,” said Carrozza about Courter. “She’s very well positioned; she has not only the skills, but the confidence from being here for so long to do the job just fine.”

Due to Courter’s experience with the FSA, she believes the transition will be easier for everyone.

“I know how the organization runs [and] I know the procedures that are in place; it’s just a matter of learning new projects that I haven’t taken part in before,” said Courter.

Courter is grateful for the support Carrozza has given her during the transition. “Without the support of the FSA and Ann in particular, I probably wouldn’t of been able to do [the job],” said Courter.

As for Carrozza, she has plans to relax and enjoy her free time. “I’ve been working for 36 years almost 29 at Hudson Valley,” said Carrozza. “I want to clean out my closets [and] clean my house.”

“I think the faculty is outstanding, as long as [the FSA] continues to keep the students first, it’s only going to get better,” said Carrozza.

By: Hunter Wallace Staff Writer Ainsley Thomas was named chief diversity officer on Jan. 30 This newly-created position entails several responsibilities that relate to students and the workforce. Specifically focusing on diversity, harassment and discrimination, Thomas is required to report to president Andrew Matonak specifically regarding diversity, harassment and discrimination at Hudson Valley.

“I oversee the college’s development and efforts to diversify its workforce and student body

through the recruitment of students and faculty. I also work with students and administration to maintain higher retention. I work to connect the community and the campus,” said Thomas.

Thomas is also responsible for making sure students understand and take advantage of resources that the college has to offer.

Hudson Valley is among many other colleges to introduce the role of chief diversity officer.

“Every SUNY school has their own chief diversity officer.

This position was approved by the Governor’s office, in an effort to

promote diversity on college campuses,” said Thomas.

Thomas looks to apply his prior experience in administration and legislation to his newly appointed role.

Thomas worked in state government as a legislative analyst for the Senate Majority Office and was also a certified social studies teacher at Albany High School and Bishop Maginn High School for seven years.

Thomas said, “Hudson Valley is an experience. It has a great campus and a great student body.

I look forward to supporting this college in its efforts.”

Mac’N’Munch takes the cake in marketing competition The winners of the Marketing Competition hosted by Entrepreneurship Club will be heading to Plattsburgh for one final competition.

Four teams, consisting of four students each, were given 24 hours to create a new product for the Sonic Drive-In restaurant last Friday.

The groups were critiqued by a panel of four judges, consisting of business professors and students who assessed the competing students’ on criteria related to the marketing and distribution of their products. Students were judged on everything from description of the products to the quality of their presentations.

Each team had ten minutes to present their new product offering.

Team One, consisting of Chris Grygirl, Kyle Hudson, Ahmed Khan and Ezra Anderson, proposed the “Mac’N’Munch”; a triangular fried macaroni and cheese bite served with a spread of cheese and sauce options in a anti-spill package, designed for those on-the-go.

Team Two’s Mikayla Snyder, Jordan Smith, Sarah Fox and Collin Mallone came up with the adult sized “Mac Daddy” and child portioned “Baby Got Mac” sandwiches.

According to research found by participants, burgers are the most commonly ordered menu item. The Mac Daddy sandwich

would consist of fried macaroni and cheese with Kraft Velveeta cheese sauce placed between two beef patties. The sandwich would use Sonic Drive-In’s Texas Toast rather than hamburger buns.

Eduardo Castillo, Max Morand, Nathaniel Savasta and Thomas Nevins of Team Three designed the “Mac’ Attack” that would come in bacon, buffalo and jalapeno variations. Cashiers would be instructed to ask if a customer would like their order to be “Mac’ Attacked.”

The “Hawaiian Dog” was made by Gigi Benami, Sabrina Scott, Bobby Canniff and Josh Powell of Team Four. Partnerships with King’s Hawaiian, Smuckers and French’s would form the new item using sweetened hot dog buns, pineapple jam and potato sticks from their respective companies.

The recurrence of macaroni and cheese based menu additions comes from a common point of analysis developed by teams one through three. Sonic Drive-In offers a diverse but familiar spread of fast food but does not offer macaroni and cheese, a favorite of children and millennials.

The appeal of macaroni and cheese on Sonic Drive-In’s menu was further expanded on by Team Three’s research. They found McClain Food Services, a logistics and supply chain company that distributes food to Sonic DriveIn, already sends them chili using the same methods macaroni and cheese would be sent; using a microwavable and steam-safe bag.

This would mean that the addition of macaroni and cheese would easily slide into the current operations and training of the restaurant.

A campaign and marketing strategy to increase awareness of the new product is needed in creating a product that will generate interest and bring in customers while increasing Sonic Drive-In’s presence on social media.

Team One conducted market research to support their ideas, citing an online survey they performed on 200 people, aged 16 to

30. 85 percent of people said they would be willing to try a fried macaroni and cheese nugget.

Team One also proposed a Twitter campaign which would encourage customers to share their moments with the Mac’N’Munch and it’s on-the-go packaging by using “#GetCheesy.”

Team Three considered available space for their marketing strategy, explaining that Mac’ Attack would be incorporated into stores with a 90 day coupon campaign. Their idea was that everyone who orders Macaroni and

cheese alone would receive a coupon for a menu item to be “Mac’ Attacked.”

This way, customers would get used to the idea of having their orders Mac’ Attacked once the promotion ends.

After lengthy deliberation by the judges, Team One was named the winners and will move on to represent the college in Plattsburgh.

On their win, the team one had only one thing to say, “#GetCheesy.”

Karryn Cristi premieres artwork at local cafe

By: Zoe Deno Staff Writer Fine arts major Karryn Cristi’s dream of becoming a fullfledged artist became a reality as her first exhibition opened at Eden Cafe.

“I’ve been told so many times to just be a nurse, and that my art should be a hobby that I do on the side,” said Cristi “I will do whatever I am motivated to do with my art.”

Cristi believes that you should not be discouraged by things due to their difficulty. “Let it motivate you to believe in yourself and pursue your dream to its fullest,” said Cristi.

Eden Cafe offers a commission-free program to artists. According to Eden Cafe’s manager Joe Ventura, artists aren’t typically organized and the program helps to teach artists to market and promote themselves.

“The program helps both us and the artist,” said Ventura. In return for displaying an artist’s work for a month, the artist brings a variety of people who would have never otherwise attended the cafe.

Ventura hates to compare artist’s work, but said that Cristi’s art is easily in the top ten percent of the artists that the cafe has ever hosted. “The cafe is really hosting people who are still honing their craft, but Cristi’s work is New York City ready art.”

Cristi arrived with her new-

est painting “Within, Without.”

Cristi said that the painting was about emotions. “In one hand the woman is clutching a grapefruit so tightly all of the juice is leaking out of it,” said Cristi. “People have to give so much of themselves all the time,” she said.

The grapefruit in the woman’s stomach shows that people can keep taking from within themselves and their emotion won’t run out. In her left hand the woman holds a rose which represents the beauty that comes from all that people give.

The woman also has clouds covering her eyes. Cristi said this was initially inspired by Elton John’s song, “Daniel.”

Although influential, that piece of inspiration was not the only reason she hid the woman’s eyes.

“Eyes are what we use to determine identity,” said Cristi. “The clouds were placed in front of her eyes because I wanted the people be able to relate to her.”

Cristi did not want her audience to look at the painting and wonder who the woman was or what she was doing. She wanted her audience to put themselves in the painting and wonder what they are doing in their own lives.

Cristi’s love for art was initially fueled by the praise she received for it when she was younger. As she grew older, her reapproaching art was augmented by realizations she’d made since

her initial interest.

“The more I realized that I could use my art to say something, the more I realized how powerful art was.”

Cristi finds inspiration everywhere, and believes art is a tool to figure things out in life. Cristi’s inspiration is primarily based on her emotions and her handling of them.

“I decided to be a fine arts major because art is my passion,” said Cristi. “When I was in grade school nothing besides art ever really interested me. I decided

that I was not going to pay to go to school for something that I didn’t love.”.

When Cristi walked into her first class at Hudson Valley, she was very confident in her skills as an artist. Her professor, Thomas Lail, said that her class would spend the first month of the class drawing paper. Initially, Cristi thought this was ridiculously easy. However, when she tried to draw it she realized she had no idea how to draw paper.

“College was when I really started to refine my skills and re-

alize that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did,” said Cristi.

She learned how to use a wide variety of art mediums instead of just using pencils like she did in high school.

“Hudson Valley has completely transformed me as an artist,” said Cristi.

Fashion-forward Vikings discuss winter trends By: Megan Woods Staff Writer

“I think that online stores have a wide variety of clothes to choose from,” said Rouse.

“Some store locations will only have one thing in stock, and another location will have a completely different selection.”

While some students struggle to choose just one store they prefer above others, Hardnett had only one store in mind, PINK, which targets the college-aged women’s market.

Hardnett enjoys wearing anything manufactured by PINK and Nike.

When asked if she was satisfied with her wardrobe, Hardnett said she would just want to add more of what she already has to her collection. Rousse, however, would like to incorporate more watches into his style and start to go for a more sophisticated look.

The shift in season from fall to winter prompts the campus’ snazzy dressers to express their styles for chilly weather.

Some students believe fall and spring to be the prime time to display their favorite fashion looks, but exercise science major Jaquan Rouse thinks differently.

“My favorite season to dress for is winter,” said Rouse. Rouse believes that winter is the most fashion-forward season because students can incorporate layers into their outfits for a style that also brings warmth.

The blistering cold weather also brings with it an excuse to dress comfortably. Nursing student Destiny Hardnett and individual studies major Cynthia Ballcis both believe winter allows for a more comfortable wardrobe.

Splurging on fashion can be difficult on a student’s budget. The relative lack of buying power students may face can make choosing between style and quality a challenge, but there are some students willing to spend a premium on their wardrobe.

Physical education major Deshawn Pears recalls a time he spent about $700 on a pair of

shoes. “I had the money and I liked the style [so] I just had to have them,” said Pears.

Individual studies major Justine Febres says she’ll rarely spend more than $50 on an outfit. “I’m cheap so I don’t spend much, but I still like to have good quality clothing,” said Febres.

Budget-conscious students like Febres may not have to compromise on style and could find high quality items if they’re willing to dig through their local thrift stores.

Ballcis said that she has been to thrift shops, but she wasn’t pleased by the selection. Ballcis was never drawn in by an article of clothing which caught her eye, so she never purchased anything.

Ballcis maintains that she’d still be open to thrift clothing if something that matched her style was available.

Unlike Ballcis, individual studies major Joshua Burnett said he would never consider going thrift shopping because it’s not something which fits his style.

Jaquan Rousse is a sports enthusiast who believes believes that aspect of his life has had an effect on his aesthetic. Rousse prefers to go online shopping rather than walking into a store, with his favorite store being Champs.

Student spreads love across the globe

By: Julio Rodriguez Creative Editor Gigi Benami took to Facebook to share the love she has for her boyfriend across the globe.

The marketing student was looking to find an inventive way to celebrate her first Valentine’s day with her boyfriend Ben Candib. In the process, Benami stumbled on a Facebook trend gaining some attention called “The Love Project.”

“It started two weeks ago when I saw an article online,” said Benami. “The main goal of the project was to express your love for your significant with responses around the world. I thought the idea was cool, so I took their statement and put my own information into it,” said Benami.

The love project aims to connect people who are continents apart and spread love across socio-cultural barriers. The project is out to prove that people may be divided in miles, but we all share one thing in common: the ability to love.

Benami received responses in the form of selfies and written posts. The posts included a message to Benami and Candib along with the sender’s location.

“I reached about 40 countries: South Africa, Uruguay, France, Australia and Taiwan are some of the locations,” said Benami.

Benami shared her love story with posts on various love project pages. In her posts she asked others to respond with a short selection of words which read, “Ben, Gigi’s love is so big that it’s reached (insert location here).”

Benami received so many responses, her phone stopped working properly. “I freaked out when my phone started malfunctioning because I was so afraid the photos would be gone,” said Benami.

Benami’s project even reached a t-shirt company named Teespring, who developed a custom t-shirt for Benami which they sent to her home.

Benami initially believed the cause would garner a few responses, but she was pleasantly surprised when the responses

came flooding in.

“I received a lot of submissions and it really surprised me,” said Benami. “It somehow grew bigger and bigger [and] I received about 140 entries.”

“I told a handful of my friends, but a majority of people didn’t know until it was in the daily gazette. It went bigger than I ever expected. I thought that there would maybe be a few responses, but it just grew from there,” said Benami.

For Valentine’s Day, Belami collected the posts and gathered them into a box for Candib.

After a social-media journey to spread her love story, Benami received global support for her and her Valentine.

Music students at Hudson Valley are in Treble ♪

Music is the perfect outlet to alleviate the stress of college .

I was an active member of my high school’s music program.

I found friends, made lasting relationships and formed some endearing band jokes that are still relevant today.

Of Hudson Valley’s 50 active clubs and over 80 degree programs, only five music classes and two performing ensembles are available. This campus is frequented by over 10,000 students per semester, yet it’s range of musical offerings appears stunted.

Music was a big part of my high school career, but that passion lies dormant since arriving at Hudson Valley.

I find it hard to believe that such a large campus of students

displays little interest in possibly pursuing music as an extracurricular activity. Administration’s failure to adequately inform students about the music club and campus’ performing ensembles is disappointing.

A visit to Hudson Valley’s website yields little to no information on any given extracurricular except the athletic department, and I’ve found that faculty advisors to some clubs are unresponsive to e-mail.

Perhaps there is an interest, but students are unwilling to put themselves out there to join a club. The college’s choir club and pep band are constantly searching for new members.

When I started at Hudson

Valley, the thought of joining a club was a difficult thought to deal with. I thought, “Would I meet people, and will they like me?” I let those voices take ahold of me until I was too nervous to attend any type of club meeting.

After dealing with my fear, I was shocked to discover that I had a place to make friends. Musicians are some of the most expressive, competitive and friendly people.

Since I found a strong connection , maybe a performing ensemble can be the place for you too.

Music is a unique endeavor to pursue. Being a musician also requires you to be a versatile human being. A musician has to read music, play or sing and make sure the sounds coincide with the key they’re supposed to be adhering to.

Musicians possess the qualities that make successful students, but Hudson Valley seems to lack outlets for students interested in music.

If you participated in music during high school, I encourage

you to take a music class or join a performing ensemble. I am a supporter of the arts, and I would love to see the music department cater to the larger number of interested students.

Another addition to the Viking family

By: Skylar Blankenship Sports Editor Starting in Spring’s 2017 semester, Alyssa Ruggiero, the current head coach of women’s golf team, will also be coaching the new men’s golf team.

“We are very excited to add men’s golf as our 18th athletic program to offer our students,” said Justin Hoyt, interim director of athletics. “We will now have nine men’s and nine women’s sports to offer, second most in all of NJCAA Region 3.”

Hoyt also has confidence that Coach Ruggiero will be able to lead the men’s and women’s programs.

A press release named Ruggiero the head coach for both teams at the end of this season.

Ruggiero received a bachelor’s in physical education from SUNY Cortland. She later attended the University of West Virginia and earned a master’s in school health education.

“I’m looking forward to developing the men’s program and growing both the men’s and women’s golf programs here at HVCC during the coming years,” said Ruggiero.

The men’s and women’s teams will be practicing and attending the same tournaments.

“Practicing together will generate a greater sense of [teamwork] and create the opportunity for all team members to work with one another to improve their golf games,” said Ruggiero.

The women’s golf team has begun indoor practices, but are

waiting for the weather to permit them to practice at the Pheasant Hollow Golf Club, their home course in Castleton-On-Hudson.

Ruggiero is actively recruiting from the campus’ student body for the women’s golf team for their current season.

Ruggiero is communicating with athletic directors, coaches and players in the NYSPHSAA Section 2 as well as the surrounding sections. After the Vikings’ season ends, she will enter a scouting phase of attending junior tournaments and high school matches.

The women’s golf team has their first match on April 4. against Columbia-Greene Community College at the Catskill Golf Club.

Valley turnover rate affects athletics By: Zoe Deno Staff Writer New incoming student athletes means new opportunities for Hudson Valley’s athletic teams.

“Turnover is a natural thing that is going to happen,” said women’s basketball coach Richard Coleman. “I think a lot of people don’t realize how many students we have here, and with a higher number of students you are going to have a higher turnover rate just in general.”

Hudson Valley is a non-athletic scholarship institution. If a player is playing well, it isn’t

uncommon for them to be offered a scholarship from another school and transfer, according to Michael Muehling, the football team’s head coach.

Mike Long, the men’s basketball head coach, has taught at several four-year institutions.

Long said that he is forced to keep things simple because of the high turnover rate.

“It makes it difficult because you have to teach everything from scratch,” said Long. “You have to teach them just basic drills takes time away from the really hard stuff that you want to do.”

“We, academically, and rightly so, are a tough institution,”

said Mueling. “At the same time though we are also bringing in a lot of students who aren’t academically ready for college.”

Hudson Valley has a policy that mandates all athletes to maintain a 2.0 GPA at midterms in order to continue to play that contributes to a large portion of the turnover.

“I would love to see the midterm rule change. In a lot of cases kids have only had one exam,” said Long.

“A big problem is that a lot of our freshmen aren’t prepared for college, so to hold their first six weeks of class against them and then take away football, which

might be their only incentive to continue to go to class, makes it tough,” Muehling said.

Tyler Sims, a criminal justice major, stopped going to classes after he was removed from the football team due to poor grades.

“I was hiding because I was scared to tell my family,” said Sims. “They sent me off to college expecting me to do great things and then I got kicked from the team.”

Sims turned things around by taking a semester off to work so he could pay out-of-pocket. He worked to get his grades up and is now on the football team again.

According to Mueling, unlike

Sims, most students who get cut from the team because of grades don’t bounce back to being on the team.

“I’m actually glad this happened, because it forced me to grow up,” said Sims.

Long said, “The high turnover rate can’t really be classified as a negative, it’s just something that you know is coming and that you have to deal with at Hudson Valley.”

“What I can see from watching tonight’s game is that it appears that the team has great chemistry on the ice,” said student senator Brendon Caluneo. “I think this can be attributed to outstanding leadership and coaching.”

The Viking’s Hockey team has won its last eight games. “Earlier in the season we did not play all that well, but over the break we got it together and now we are on a little winning streak,” said Muller.

“I feel like we are building up momentum for a great finish in Nationals,” Smith said.

“We have to pick it up for sure. Nationals are going to be three of the toughest and important games of the year,” Lancto said. “You have to win before you can get the trophy.”
