GOOD STUFF TO KNOW THE FLU AND YOU. Each year a new vaccine is created to protect against new strains of the influenza virus; that’s why it’s important to have one annually. The best time to vaccinated is early - usually between October and December. A flu shot can prevent influenza illness in about 70% to 90% of children and adults. It is especially important to get vaccinated if you are at a high risk of influenzarelated complications. This applies to: • age 65 or older • pregnant women • healthy children aged 6 – 23 months • people with certain chronic health conditions (heart or lung problems, diabetes, cancer, weakened immune systems, kidney disease, anemia) • health care workers • people who live in nursing homes or other chronic care facilities To find out where to get a flu shot in your community, check out the Flu Shot Locator at www.health.gov.bc.ca/flu/

GET READY TO SHAKEOUT OCTOBER 20, 2011 On Friday September 9th at 12:48pm a 6.4 magnitude earthquake along with a series of significant aftershocks occurred just off the west coast of Vancouver Island, with mild shaking felt in many BC jurisdictions including Quadra Island. British Columbia is on one of the most active seismic faults in the world and there are approximately 1200 earthquakes per year. On October 20th at 10:20 am thousands of British Columbians will make history and join others along the west coast of the United States, the Central United States, Guam and New Zealand in the largest earthquake drill in the world. To date over 110,000 BC residents have signed up to participate! With the recent reminder that BC is in a seismically active zone and with the many lessons learned from the recent quakes in Japan and New Zealand, the Shakeout BC Organizing Committee would like to encourage all residents in British Columbia to register today for the Great British Columbia Shakeout drill. The drill takes only a minute of your day and offers residents, businesses and agencies the opportunity to practice the recommended safety technique of Drop, Cover and Hold-On, while at the same time serve as a reminder to review emergency plans, your grab and go kit and emergency supplies. For more information on earthquake preparedness and to register for the drill, visit www. shakeoutbc.ca or email info@ shakeoutbc.ca. For more infor mation about emergency preparedness in your community, contact Quadra Emergency Program ESSD Judy Hagen 250 285 2150.
