GOOD STUFF TO KNOW WHY DO WE WEAR POPPIES FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY? Since 1921, the poppy has stood as a symbol of remembrance for Canadians who have fallen in war and military operations. The poppy worn on Remembrance Day is the red-corn poppy, which grows abundantly in Europe. The corn poppy was one of the few plants that grew on the battlefield; it thrives in soil rich in lime, which was abundant due to the intensive shelling during the war. The poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae is largely responsible for the adoption of the popppy as a symbol of remembrance in Canada. To read the poem, and to learn more about the history of Remembrance Day and Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, visit The Royal Canadian Legion website at www.legion.ca
