Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects 1 in 1,000 Canadians. For those with lupus, the immune system can attack any organ in the body and if left untreated, it can be fatal. Lupus symptoms include extreme fatigue, fever, skin rashes, sun sensitivity, or persistent flu-like symptoms with blood abnormalities. Lupus often goes undetected; if in doubt, ask your doctor to run an ANA test. Lupus affects men, women, and children, generally between the ages of 15 and 45. Women are eight times more likely than men to be affected (except for those under 15 and over 45, where lupus affects the sexes equally). Until science fully understands how the immune system works, the specific cause of lupus will remain unknown. The BC Lupus Society’s mission is to support advances in research and treatments; to create public awareness; and to provide education and support to people affected by lupus. You can visit their website at www.bclupus.org.

GOOD STUFF TO KNOW

3. “Jack-o’-lantern” was originally the term used to describe mysterious lights often seen at night by travellers, especially over bogs. The light, which was said to resemble a retreating lantern and was also known as will-o’-the-wisp, ignis fatuus, and hobby lantern, was thought to lure pedestrians away from safe paths.
