GOOD STUFF TO KNOW HOW DEHYDRATING IS THAT CUP OF COFFEE? Anyone who’s had a few cups of coffee in the morning knows that it doesn’t take long before that java has you running for the bathroom. And, of course, we all know coffee is loaded with caffeine, which is a diuretic— meaning a substance that makes the body lose water. So coffee must be dehydrating, right? In fact, that’s a myth, family physician Dr. Upe Mehan of Kitchener, ON, says. A cup of coffee or two will not dehydrate you. The average cup of coffee contains between 100 and 120 milligrams of caffeine. But you’d need more than 500 to 600 milligrams of caffeine for its diuretic effects to kick in. “So you would have to consume four or more cups of coffee to get that dehydrating effect from it,” Mehan says. So why then does coffee send us to the bathroom so often? “That’s because of caffeine’s irritant effect on the bladder, which stimulates the bladder to create that urge to urinate,” Mehan says. “But the fluid you lose from that is pretty small.” What does cause dehydration is alcohol; in fact, a major part of a hangover is the body trying to recover from dehydration. Dehydration can also stem from: illnesses that lead to diarrhea and vomiting, vigorous exercise and intense sweating, and being out in hot, humid weather. So if you’re worried that your morning joe is draining you dry, Mehan says not to worry. “Go ahead, and enjoy that doubledouble.” For more info: www.ctvnew.ca/health
