his issue marks the 21st anniversary for the little Cortes phone book. Who knew? Those businesses that choose to be included in the phone books make its free distribution to Cortes mailboxes possible. Without them, there wouldn't be a little Cortes phone book, so please let them know you appreciate their support. Many people are involved in its production: Janice Ammundsen collects the annual emailed requests for changes/additions of residential numbers and creates and proofreads the “white pages” by comparing with the most current Telus book. Michelle Simms contributed her design skills to the book's layout this year. And Samantha Moore continues to make sure island stores are stocked with copies for sale. Thank you! The two attendants proceed to the accident/illness scene & contact Emergency Health Service to advise on necessary action. (HELP THEM FIND YOU by having someone greet the ambulance, if possible, at your driveway entrance.) 4. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, the patient may remain on the island or be evacuated by helicopter, Coast Guard or ferry.

Precious time is often wasted when the ambulance crew has difficulty locating an address. n n n

Some houses have no numbers. Some have numbers that can only be seen from one direction. Some have numbers that are too small, or faded so much they can’t be seen. Some numbers are covered by greenery.

Ideally the numbers should be about 4 feet off the ground and 4-6 inches tall and easily seen from both directions of travel. Place address numbers at the end of the driveway so emergency services can find the address before they drive down a long driveway. Having the number on the house alone is okay only if it can be easily seen from the road. Some properties have more than one dwelling and these should be clearly marked as 123-A, 123-B etc.

BASIC ITEMS YOU WILL NEED TO SURVIVE FOR 72 HOURS AFTER A DISASTER - Water: at least two litres of water per person per day (including small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order) – Food - that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food and water once a year) – Manual can opener – Flashlight and batteries – Candles and matches or lighter (Remember to place candles in sturdy containers and to put them out before going to sleep) – Battery-powered or wind-up radio (and extra batteries) – First Aid Kit – Special items such as prescription medications, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities – Extra keys for your car and house – Some cash in smaller bills, like $10 bills (travellers cheques are also useful) + change for pay phones. – A copy of your emergency plan including contact information. RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL KIT SUPPLIES: It is always a good idea to have extra supplies on hand. Here are some recommendations: – A change of clothing and footwear for each household member – Sleeping bag or warm (foil) blanket for each household member – A whistle (in case you need to attract attention) – Garbage bags for personal sanitation – Toilet paper and other personal care supplies – Safety gloves – Basic tools (hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, fasteners, work gloves) – Small fuel-driven stove and fuel (follow manufacturer’s directions and store properly) – Two additional litres of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning USEFUL WEBSITES: If there was a family emergency, or local disaster, could you locate all your legal, financial and personal information within minutes?
