PUMP UP YOUR MEMORY! Seniors who are in the earliest stages of dementia might be able to slow the disease by pumping weights a few times a week, new research out of Vancouver suggests. Researchers at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility at Vancouver Coastal Health and the University of British Columbia found that seniors in the earliest stages of dementia performed better on mental tests after just six months of twice-a-week resistance training. The team studied 86 women who were between the age of 70 and 80 and who had probable “mild cognitive impairment.” People with MCI typically forget recent events or conversations, have difficulty performing more than one task at a time, and take longer to make decisions or perform calculations. Having MCI puts one at greater risk for dementia, though, for reasons still not understood, not everyone goes on to develop it. MCI is thus considered an important window of opportunity for perhaps slowing cognitive decline. For this study, the researchers divided the 86 women into three groups: • One group performed an hour of resistance training twice a week • Another performed an hour of aerobic exercise twice a week • A third group did a twice-weekly “balance and tone” training sessions. This group was considered the control group The researchers found that those in the weight training group saw significant improvements in their “executive cognitive functions,” such as being able to hold their attention on a task and resolving conflicts. Their associated memory performance also improved compared to those in the “balance and tone” sessions. The researchers note that their study was quite small, there was a high dropout rate and they aren’t sure whether the results would apply to men or to women of other ages. But they say the study was meant to show “proof-of-concept” and to provide preliminary evidence that resistance training and aerobic exercise improve cognitive functions. Learn more about this study from CTV Health online at www.ctv.ca/health

We are confident that we can provide one of the finest dining experiences on the West Coast, and we thank you for the opportunity to host you with the warmth and hospitality for which the staff of Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge have long been known.

Walking trails surround the lodge for all outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. Discover the location where Captain Vancouver came ashore in 1792 or ask for direction. The Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, (formerly Kwagiulth Museum and Cultural Centre) only a brisk walk from the lodge, houses a sacred potlatch collection including headdresses, masks and basketry. A three-story totem and more photographs dating from the turn of the century make this attraction a must see!

The resort offers private accommodation in any of the five cottages lining the oceanfront. The three two-bedroom cottages are supplied with gas fireplaces, kitchenettes and jetted soaker Jacuzzi bathtubs for comfort and convenience. Also available is a four-bedroom guesthouse complete with three bathrooms, two living rooms with gas fireplaces, full kitchen facilities and private outdoor hot tub making it an ideal location for family reunions. The Wharf house cottage is located near our full service RV Park and offers two queen bedrooms, two bathrooms; one with a jetted soaker tub and the second with an over sized shower. This cottage includes a full kitchen including a dishwasher, living room with gas fireplace and a wrap around deck. All cottages are equipped with gas barbecues.

Tsa-Kwa-Luten offers this full service dining room and lounge, in addition to meeting facilities with audiovisual services. A fitness area, dry sauna and whirlpool hot tub (located on the lower level) are also part of the main lodge.

Designed by Victoria Architect Philip Chang, Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge was the first of its kind in Canada. “Tsa-Kwa-Luten” (pronounced Saw-Kwa-Loo-Tan) means “the gathering place”. The resort is unique because it is one of the few native owned and operated resorts in Canada, featuring authentic culture, food and art as part of the native experience. The main lodge (Grand Hall) structure is designed in the style of a traditional west coast “Gukwdzi” or Big House, and contemporary native art is displayed in both the main lodge and all guest rooms. Photographs from the late 18th and early 19th century line the walls in both wings of the Lodge. Please feel free to go for a walk after your meal to view these historical photographs.

Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge was completed and opened in June 1991. It is owned and operated by the Cape Mudge We-Wai-Kai Nation, which has reserve land on Quadra Island and in Campbell River.

Gilakasla, or welcome (in the Kwak’wala language), to Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge, the Oceanfront Resort at Cape Mudge. A luxury seaside resort designed to renew your soul.
