GOOD STUFF TO KNOW The makers of the popular antinausea drug Gravol have come out with a new product, called Gravol Multi-Symptom, which promises to relieve headaches and fever as well as stave off nausea, all with ingredients from natural sources. But the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada (ISMP Canada) is warning that the product might not be right for people who have told to avoid aspirin – even though the product doesn’t actually contain aspirin. What Gravol Multi-Symptom does contain is ginger, a natural antinauseant, and willow bark, which has long been used as a traditional herbal remedy for headaches. Part of the reason willow bark works so well for headaches is because it contains salicin, one of a class of medicines known as “salicylates.” Haven’t heard of salicylates? Chances are good you’ve heard of ASA, also known as acetylsalicylic acid and also known as aspirin. The problem is that many people cannot take ASA. Sometimes it’s because they are allergic to it. For others, it’s because they’re at risk of bleeding. Or, it might be because they already take prescription blood thinners, such as Coumadin or warfarin. For them, taking extra ASA -- a well-known and effective blood thinner -- can be risky. If you’re not sure about whether you can take Gravol Multi-Symptom, it’s best to check with your doctor or pharmacist. And if your doctor or health professional advises you to take Gravol, be sure you understand which product to take. For more, visit www.ctv.ca/health
