GOOD STUFF TO KNOW FREE ARTHRITIS INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT YOUR FINGER TIPS Two new Apple applications are now available to aid those with arthritis, a condition that is often misunderstood even through one out of six Canadians is affected by it. ArthritisID is an Apple application that was developed by two Vancouver Arthritis Experts. The app is written in lay language, and includes a screening tool as well as prevention and treatment strategies. It also includes information about diet and exercise to maintain joint health. The second application, ArthritisID PRO, is available for doctors and other health professionals. It has an interactive screening tool, best practice (evidence-based) guidelines for diagnosing and treating arthritis, and five instructional videos that show how to examine the joints properly. The apps were developed by Dr. John Esdaile, a professor of medicine at the University of British Columbia and the University of Calgary. Esdaile noted that early detection is very important but with a shortage of rhumatologists, it is difficult to get a timely diagnosis. Doctors who use the app qualify for continuing medical education credits since it has been accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. —Adapted from The Vancouver Sun, October 17, 2011

BC Ferries coordinates public consultation throughout the coastal communities by means of Ferry Advisory Committees (FAC). These bodies are composed of volunteers who are interested in all aspects of ferry service and operations within their community. These committees function within a three-year term, and as the next term begins January 1, 2012, this call for volunteers is open to all members of the public at this time. Committee members are reimbursed for all reasonable expenses incurred while conducting FAC-related activities. Ideally, committee members represent a stakeholder group, thus providing an avenue for two-way flow of information between BC Ferries and these groups. For the Quadra and Cortes Islands committee, BC Ferries is seeking volunteers for this next committee. If you are interested in joining your FAC for the 2012-2014 term, please contact: Darin Guenette, Manager, Public Affairs at 1-877- 978-2385 (toll free) or darin.guenette@bcferries.com no later than December 9, 2011. For further information on any aspects of these committees (including committee Terms of Reference), visit the BC Ferries website (www.bcferries.com/About BC Ferries/Public Consultation), email any member of your local FAC (contact information on website) or reach out to Darin Guenette.
