The world is just beginning to recognize the potential of technology to enable global common performance standards, especially in math, science and technology. This will eventually lead to a global educational network wherein the best teachers are connected to the most appropriate student.

Many countries have established national standards. In the U.S., the Common Core is a step toward this. In todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mobile society, shouldn't a sixth-grader in Florida have the same math skills as a sixth-grader in Oregon?

The Tenth Amendment ensures education is controlled at the state and local levels. States have established learning standards deďŹ ned by grade level or clusters of grades. Curriculum and assessment systems are then organized around expectations in core subject areas.

Led by the curriculum and instruction staďŹ&#x20AC;, districts review the state standards and develop a more granular set of standards aligned to the state. Essential Learner Outcomes drive the curriculum design, along with assignment creation and assessments.

When teachers are assigned a section, the course standards are provided for them. They have the ďŹ&#x201A;exibility to create their assignments and develop their own pedagogy, with the end result in mind.

Standards give a focus to student learning. Expectations of what is to be learned are clear and proďŹ ciency is easily determined.

Eastview High School Scheduling Success In the past, it was done with chalkboards, cardboard boxes, and enough 3x5 note cards to paper a gym. They often got the job done over weeks of hot summer afternoons. Using the power of Campus Scheduling, Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minn., has developed “Targeted Tuesdays” and re-schedules more than 2,000 students every eight weeks. This is used as a proactive way to redirect students who may be struggling to get them the support WKH\ QHHG ,W LGHQWLÏHV WKRVH ZKR are accelerating and gives them the challenges they need. Either way, it IRFXVHV RQ ÏQGLQJ WKH EHVW VROXWLRQV for each student. “With this advanced scheduling model we have learning teams and no more than a dozen students in a classroom and large enrichment lectures,” says Dr. Randall Peterson, Eastview’s Principal. “Students are connected to the grade book, attendance, interven-

tion transcripts and personalized OHDUQLQJ SODQV Å DOO ZLWKLQ ,QÏQLWH Campus. The note cards may be gone, but the artists remain.
