Fall 2010

A Glimpse into the Future In past issues of The Infinite Campus we explored the history of American public education, described our transformational G3 concepts and profiled districts that are doing great things. This time I thought it would be interesting to combine all these pieces and take a glimpse into a not too distant G3-powered future. This issue takes the form of a graphic novel; a unique format with which to tell our story in a very visual manner. All of the actors are Infinite Campus employees and local middle school students. The school even sent a bus over for us to use. In our story we follow Shaun, a typical middle school student. Shaun is trapped in a monotonous factory school where survival, not learning, is the name of the game. Then one day, Shaun is transported to a Community Learning Center powered by G3 technology where education takes the form of relevant learning experiences. Administrators, teachers, parents and community members work together to make learning fun. Ready? We Are. Charlie Kratsch Infinite Campus Founder & CEO

Principal Edsel stops Shaun in the hallway. Systemic Change is Needed America is facing a crisis in education. We can no longer continue to do the same thing and expect different results. For more than a century, the factory model has been sufficient to meet the needs of an industrial society. However, the information age has created a paradigm shift that demands an entirely different educational culture. It must be more than adding laptops and smart boards to the classroom. It must be a systemic change that transforms education. Infinite Campus is the catalyst for this change. Our G3 tools support effective administrators, empower teachers, and engage parents with the ultimate result of having enthusiastic students. Infinite Campus continues to deliver the tools needed for this transformation.

shaun begins his new day ‌ enters school with jake

good morning, shaun. I’m Mr. Adams, the principal at second foundation school. we’ve been expecting you.

welcome shaun When your father called, we put your information into Campus and have created a schedule for you. We got your grades and find you are on track with Jake.

Also, I’ve created an account on THE Campus Portal and notified your parents. They can see what classes you have today and what is happening at school.

shaun, do you have a phone?

Sure, in my backpack.

Wow, they’ll like that.

dude, you’ll need your phone for class. Take your ipod, too.

and I’ll take your backpack. You take notes on a laptop and email it to your account.

come on. Language Arts class is on the second floor.

G3 Effective Administrators

I’m pleased we have a substantial increase in reading scores and a slight increase in math.

Also, I ran the report for at-risk students and Campus Messenger sent an alert to the appropriate peoplE.

Ok, we’ll continue the six week evaluations and make recommendations as needed.

staff meeting

The reports we get from Infinite Campus have sure made a difference. We make more informed decisions and find better solutions.

We’ve really seen increased student achievement because of it.

Mr. Irons, I saw in the status report that some of your students are still struggling.

Yes, my data says the same thing.

I see several of my students learn best through experiential and hands-on activities.

I’ve arranged a field trip to visit KWND-TV this afternoon and meet with their meteorologist.

I’m sure all the kids will enjoy that. We’ll check the status again in a few weeks to keep these kids on track. It’s a good plan.

This will support our current lessons and provide another way to learn.

G3 Empowered Teachers Infinite Campus gives teachers the tools they need for individualized learning.

language arts Good morning, class. We have a visitor today. shaun, I’m Ms. Wright. I’m glad you could join us. I understand you’ll be shadowing Jake today.

Personalized learning plans are created in Infinite Campus, pulling together many sources of data about students in one place. Teachers use this information to guide learning, generate appropriate lessons, monitor assessments and move students at their own pace, even if it means moving to a different class. Infinite Campus G3 scheduling places the right teacher with the right student at the right time. The Campus Leaning Marketplace gives teachers access to student-specific lessons. Populated by master teachers, business leaders, or industry experts, lessons are accessible to teachers across the country. Success is tracked for effectiveness. Individualized learning is only possible with G3 technology and a flexible, supportive learning environment.

we’ll continue with our computer program to learn more about mark twain. some of you are already in level 4, so please let me know when you’re done.

also, don’t forget to check out our website for peer updates. And there are text messages from our discussion yesterday.

wow, she knows a lot about me.

I’ll give Shaun a guest password to get him started.

jake, you’re really cruising with this.

Good job!

Shaun, I notice your records show you haven’t studied twain yet. I think you’ll enjoy this.

hey, this is cool. i even know some of the answers.

this is one of my favorite classes. we should be ready for the quiz soon. let’s hit it.

G3 Empowered Teachers

Hey, Mark twain’s real name was samuel clemens and he lived in missouri. I have an uncle in missouri.

It’s interesting to learn more about an author. It helps you understand the books you read. I think tom sawyer and huck finn are funny. they get into so much trouble!

ok, if you have finished your section, we’re ready for the evaluation. Call up your end-ofsession screen and go for it.

good luck!

ok shaun and jake. Let’s see how you did on the level 4 quiz. If you scored 8 or higher, you move to the next level.

congratulations you guys. you’re ready for level 5. Actually, mr. thomas teaches that. the office will notify your parents and you can go directly to room 24 tomorrow. he’ll be expecting you.

we’re heading to science class next. mr. Irons is great.

Yea! We don’t have to wait to move ahead? this is awesome.

wow DUDE, you are lucky to be at this school.

science class

Welcome to science class, shaun. The office notified me you would be here today. I’m Mr. Irons.

We’ll be doing some in-class work this morning, then heading for a field trip this afternoon. Your mom already sent her consent form to me.

Ok class, let’s get started.

Among other things, tracking these storms is important to study climate change.

there has been an increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans, and it’s projected to continue.

Hurricane Igor is just off the coast of Puerto Rico headed for The Carolina coasts by this weekend.

I found a site by the National Weather Service listing the top 10 things you need to know about climate change. I added a link to our class website.

Great! For tonight’s homework, I’ve posted a few projects on our CAMPUS site. Choose one to research more and we’ll discuss it tomorrow.

Your generation will be the ones faced with how to address these problems. What information have you found?

My Dad showed me a study about how plants and animals are affected by their changing environment.

Ok, let’s see what we’ve learned this week. Based on what we studied, what are your predictions for Hurricane Igor? Email your predictions to me.

G3 Engaged Parents Infinite Campus knows that when parents/guardians are involved, students do better. The Campus Portal is a vital communication tool between the school and parents. Grades, assignments, attendance, behavior and more are available immediately and can be accessed from anywhere, at any time. In the Community Learning Center, parents work with their child to develop the individual learner plan, acting as counselors in collaboration with teachers. Adjustments to the plan are made when needed to keep children on track. Because Infinite Campus is fully integrated, Campus Food Service enables parents to track lunch expenses and even see what their children eat. Campus Online Payments allows parents to pay any fees online with credit/debit cards or checking/saving accounts. Infinite Campus has everything needed to engage parents and increase student success.

That’s cool that Dad can see my work – even when he’s on a business trip.

Dad.Cell How’s your day going? I hope you like it. It sounded like a good fit.

Shaun.Cell It’s great here. I’m with a kid called Jake. He’s showing me around.

Dad.Cell I checked the Campus Portal and saw that you did well in language arts this morning. Nice job.

Shaun.Cell Ya, we got to learn about Mark Twain with a computer game. WAY COOL.

Dad.Cell I’ll be back from London tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear more about the new school.

lunch

Can’t wait to tell mom about science class.

Mom.Cell Hey Shaun, how’s it going? I see you have a field trip this afternoon. Should be fun.

Shaun.Cell This place is awesome. I’m at lunch now.

Mom.Cell I know. You had pizza and fruit. PLUS two pieces of pie. The food must be good. I saw your science homework for tonight. Looks interesting.

Shaun.Cell Ya, Jake and I are going to work on it together. Gotta go. See you tonight.

Mom.Cell HUGS :)

Wow, do your parents check on you during the day?

Ya, they check all the time. It’s made me be a better student. Hey, the bus for the field trip is loading. Come on.

G3 Engaged Parents

Hey, Mr. Adams wants to meet with us when I get back. Says Shaun did great today!

I’ll email Mr. Irons and see how the field trip went. What’s Shaun’s next lesson in language arts? Wow, his schedule is pretty busy tomorrow.

We’ll contact the counselor to discuss next semester’s schedule. I need to add more money to his lunch balance.

Looks like lunch for the rest of the week is pretty good. It’s nice that I can check attendance from work.

And I can make Online payments instead of writing checks every month!

I’ll work with shaun on his big science project this weekend.

Immunization records are all complete. I hated filling out all that paperwork every year at the old school.

G3 Learning is Fun Learning happens everywhere. The collaboration of classroom and community gives students practical, hands-on experiences. Tracking learning styles in Infinite Campus allows teachers to select outside sources that best meet student needs. Using information technology, subject experts are easily matched to curriculum planning. This is what individualized learning is all about. When administrators can lead their schools based on well-defined data, when teachers have time and tools to provide individualized instruction and when parents actively participate, then students are excited to learn. Infinite Campus builds more than a student information system. It builds resources for a community learning environment. The Community Learning Center – where learning is fun.

science field trip

Hi Everyone. I’m Thor, the weather guy here at KWND.

Maybe you’ve seen me on the 6 o’clock news.

We’re lucky to have such a nice day for your field trip. But why is it nice today and it rained yesterday?

How can I predict what it will be tomorrow or next week?

That’s what I’ll show you today.

Hmmm... we’ve been studying weather patterns for the last few weeks in Mr. Irons class.

Mr. Irons said that Understanding predictions can help us calculate the impact of climate change.

G3 Learning is Fun

Ok, based on what you see here, what do you predict for Saturday’s forecast?

As you text your answers, they’ll appear on the screen.

Looks like a high pressure from the south.
