ver since James Glover opened his little mercantile shop near the Spokane River in 1873, Spokane has been shopping local. Some of our best-loved shops have been at it for years —places as varied as Jewelry Design Center and Northwest Seed and Pet. But new shops are filling the Inland Northwest landscape, too —Wojo Works, Bella Cova, Anemone, Dry Fly Distillery to name but a few from recent years. Whether it’s 1873, 1973 or 2013, the story’s the same —shopping local creates a healthy economy for all of us here in the Inland Northwest. Sure, we feel it in our bones, how buying from locally owned businesses gives our region its unique character and vibrant urban experiences. But science is on board, too, as research shows shopping local helps create new jobs and adds to our per capita income. Think of shopping local as your civic exercise. Every week, and across all Inlander publications, we show off lots of our shop local choices. Here in our Shop Local Guide, filled only with firms that are locally owned, you’ll get a preview of what our region’s business owners are up to. You’ll see that we have some amazing entrepreneurs offering products —and customer service —you just won’t find at Any-Mart, USA. A wise man once said, “You can’t buy happiness.”But as you can see here, you can buy local —and it’s bound to put a smile on your face. Ted S. McGregor, Jr. Inlander Publisher

Why shopping local is so important to the Inland Northwest

There’s one in Miller Paint. In Kershaw’s. In local store. In my case, it was pet food.” Grandy relates how she used to leave work Auntie’s. In Two Wheel Transit. In the Garland Theand drive out to a PetSmart located in a shopping ater. In Bruttles’ Candy Shoppe. In Boo Radley’s. For the owners of these stores, those stickers are complex on the outskirts of town. But when she a small but essential reminder of the importance factored in the cost of gas and the commute time, of prioritizing locally owned retailers over global PetSmart’s lower price tag was no longer competimegabrands. Numerous long-term studies have tive. “It was easier to go with the local store that shown that the act of buying local has a profound was right by my office downtown.” “Big-box stores have what are called ‘loss leadripple effect: It creates a broader network of regional jobs, keeps tax and purchasing dollars closer ers,’ which give people the perception of a cheap to home, and adds to the diversity of retail options. shopping experience. It’s strategically done to give Raising awareness about these benefits is what you that idea,” Grandy says. One common loss led the team at Sustainable Connections, a Belling- leader is mayonnaise. Supermarkets typically sell ham-based nonprofit, to develop their “Think Lo- it below cost because it’s a kitchen staple like milk cal First” campaign. When it began back in 2003, or eggs; customers will gravitate to stores where Think Local First was meant to connect like-minded it costs the least. “That gets you in the store, and independent businesses and inform shoppers of when you go there you realize there are 10 other the broader consequences of their individual pur- things you needed. But those 10 other things you chases. For example, there’s the CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 local multiplier effect (or LME for short), first identified back in 1936 by the economist John Maynard Keynes. Repeated LME studies have determined that nearly half of every $100 spent at a local chain returns to the local economy through a network of recirculation. Compare that to just $15 out of every $100 spent at a national chain. In addition to showing consumers the power of each purchase, the Think Local First campaign sought to overturn persistent myths. One of those myths concerns the purchasing power of big-box stores. As conventional wisdom would have it, they buy a higher volume of goods, which in turn enables them to offer items at prices that their local competition simply can’t match. “It’s a misconception, because it’s generally not the The Bachelor Pad’s Tony Brown regionally sources his North Monroe store. case,” says Michelle Grandy,

needed aren’t any cheaper than they would have been at a local store.” Loss leaders aren’t really an option for the Main Market Co-op, says Megan White, the grocery store’s general manager, but that has little to do with the power of volume purchasing. It’s out of respect for the Main Market’s suppliers, many of whom are regional farmers. “We buy pretty much all our milk and eggs locally, and we give the farmers the best price we can,” says White. “We take a much lower margin on staples because we want to help nurture the idea among our customers that buying local food doesn’t have to empty your bank account. Corporations like Walmart go after the producer and force them to do whatever Walmart wants. We want to tell our farmers, ‘Your product is valuable, you have to make a living, and we’re willing to pay for that.’” And it’s not just grocery stores like Main Market that source locally. The Bachelor Pad on North Monroe is packed with vintage men’s fashion, classic hi-fi components, and hard-to-find vinyl records, yet owner Tony Brown procures every item in his inventory regionally. “The stock either comes through the door or I’m out thrifting,” he says. “With a store like this, we’re always on the hunt — you have to go out and hunt down clothes, records and gear. If people don’t come in and support us, we can’t buy stock. If you don’t have fresh stock coming in, then people stop coming in too. What shopping local really does is it makes the store better.” To put it another way: Buying from a unique local retailer like the Bachelor Pad today makes it more likely that the store will have even more of what you want tomorrow. The ramifications of the LME also can be more indirect, notes Heather Hanley. In addition to running Tin Roof Furniture in the International District, Hanley also sits on several boards and committees, which means she’s frequently soliciting donations for charity events and wine galas. “I’m always shocked at how receptive the local business owners are,” she says. “They seem so much more philanthropic, so much more willing to give back to the community. We might get a dona-

tion of a $50 gift certificate from a business that only does $5,000 in sales a month.” She acknowledges that national chains often set aside a pot of money for charitable donations, “but the little guys seem so very interested in donating to and participating in local charities. My yes-to-no ratio is nine out 10 for local businesses and nearly zero out of 10 for national ones.” Hanley theorizes that it comes down to immediacy and accountability. Local owners are more likely to give back to the community because they understand how their friends, family and neighbors will benefit. And since those owners are the faces

“There’s not some corporate face behind it, there’s a real person.”

6

of their business, they’re more likely to respond to customer problems or act in a way that puts their business in a favorable light among their current and potential clientele. “There’s not some corporate face behind it, there’s a real person,” says Hanley. “You might run into the person who just left you a Google review at the grocery store.” At the same time, Hanley acknowledges that awareness doesn’t always equate to action. “It takes some conviction. It’s so much easier to go Target and load up on your groceries and school supplies and a new accent chair that will fall apart in two weeks.” Even Grandy admits that she had trouble making the shift at first. “I didn’t change my shopping behavior overnight, but there were some things I knew I could get locally, and so I took small steps,” she says. If, as part of a growing nationwide trend known as the “0% Shift,” Spokane shoppers were to make just one out of every 10 of their purchases at a locally owned independent retailer, Grandy says there’s little reason why the Inland Northwest couldn’t change the community mentality — all while enjoying a more vibrant downtown, an improved homegrown job market, and stronger community ties. s
