KIZURI “Demand quality not just in the products you buy, but in the life of the person who made it.”
Jillian Joseph
Y
ou can feel extra good about shopping at Kizuri, says owner Jillian Joseph, who last year took over the popular and longtime fair trade shop from a family friend who had owned it since 2008. “Everything in the store is handmade with sustainability in mind,” says Joseph, who has a background in international relations and has lived and worked abroad for several years. “A quote that guides the store’s philosophy,” she says, is ‘Demand quality not just in the products you buy, but in the life of the person who made it.” As a fair trade shop, they work with more than 40 countries to source items for all ages: felted animals from Nepal, African baskets, ceramics from Colombia, Peru, Tunisia and the West Bank. Their super-soft alpaca products are second only
to polar bear fur in keeping you warm, she says, and if it’s international cuisine you’re interested in, they have cookbooks and spices to get you where you want to go. “Especially given that we can’t travel anymore, it’s a way to get a taste of the world,” says Joseph of their continuously rotating inventory. They’re always getting new things, too, including local products — they’re part of the new Live Local INW campaign — like Mountain Madness soap and greeting cards by artist Greg Pritchett. Explore for yourself during their extended Festival of Fair Trade, which used to be held during Thanksgiving but will run in a series of events October through December, spreading out the cheer (and maintaining social distance). Or check out their new e-commerce site, shopkizuri.com. Don’t be shy, says Joseph: “I always encourage people to just come explore.”

Eyewear Whatever you call it — Zoom, GoTo Meeting, Skype — video conferencing has beamed its way into our vocabulary. And that has prompted us to re-envision our eyewear. In addition to anti-reflective coating, some experts recommend a coating to minimize the blue light emanating from the computer screen. The age-old advice still stands about selecting the best frame shape to match your face shape, from oval, heart, round to square. And keep an eye out for the latest frame fashions like transparent and pearlescent plastics, neon accents, and oversized frames.

Sleep & Loungewear Loungewear is having a moment that looks to last at least as long as stay-at-home orders. Or longer, as people realize that comfort, while always “in,” can actually be fashionable. The focus on fabrics includes an updated terrycloth, but also silk and cashmere, as well as higher quality jersey that’s easy-to-wear and care for. Loose and layered is preferable, but logos and loud patterns are not. Think Coco Chanel’s classic suit meets tracksuit. The decline in opportunities and motivation to dress up have also put the spotlight on accessories like a dressy pair of dangly earrings or stylish fedora to compliment your new casual look. 26 The Inlander’s Guide to Shopping Local 2020-2021

NORTH WANDERMERE
The Great Indoors These days our homes are not only our castle, to paraphrase a familiar quote, but they’re also our office, schoolroom and personal gym. Last year’s trend towards Marie Kondo tidying has given way to modularizing: portable organizers, rolling or nesting workspaces and wall units that allow for maximum storage (while maintaining that tidy look). In the overhaul, we’ve found ourselves wondering about such things as air quality and how sound travels, prompting an interest in houseplants. Not only do they provide a healthful and calming green element to our interiors, they absorb sound. Finally, taking a cue from Netherlanders, we’re also looking to create places within our homes that allow us to just chill, what the Dutch call niksen — purposely doing nothing.

WALKER’S FURNITURE
Business is booming for the Pacific Northwest powerhouse Walker’s Furniture
Y
ou can do a lot with about 250,000 square feet of warehouse space. At Walker’s Furniture they use that space to provide their customers with three big things: selection, a low-price promise and availability, says co-owner Gary Absalonson. The family-owned business that began in Spokane in 1980 with a specialty in solid oak has since grown to 14 locations throughout Washington, Idaho and Oregon with a full line of furniture stylings for any room from high-quality manufacturers around the world. Think Flexteel, Klaussner, Magnussen, Serta, Tempurpedic. Whether it’s “shabby chic” or “country farmhouse,” Walker’s knows what customers want. “The most important thing is you have to stay on the cutting edge of style and design and yet keep the quality from good manufacturers so they’ll last,” Absalonson says. “Mainly we’ve just kept
our prices low and we have all the latest trends and styles so we have what people are looking for.” Walker’s Furniture follows all CDC recommendations under COVID-19 restrictions. All staff wear face coverings and all furniture and mattresses in its stores are regularly sanitized. Like most businesses, Walker’s 40-year legacy hit a snag in March 2020 when COVID hit. With nonessential businesses closed down and customers staying home, Walker’s massive warehouse was “just full to the brim,” Absalonson says. The transportation industry was still humming along, so all of the furniture it had ordered was still on its way. You can’t just stop all of your orders, Absalonson says. But that also presented an opportunity. “When everybody opened, we had the best inventory of anyone,” he says. Now sales are booming.

42 The Inlander’s Guide to Shopping Local 2020-2021
“We have just been ordering like crazy. We have orders placed for the next four to five months coming in,” Absalonson says. “Our buyers are pulling their hair out. Sales are just really up.” Absalonson says the furniture store is able to keep its prices lower than many of its competitors because it has such a high volume of sales. At least part of that is attributed to more of the workforce working from home than ever before, Absalonson says. “Everybody is being told to say home, and people have said, ‘If we have to stay home, let’s make our home nicer. Let’s get some new furniture and carpet and paint,’” he says. “We’ve been selling a lot of mattresses because people are concerned that the rest they get is better. We have some of the best selection and brands in the region
with over 40 styles so we can match people’s sleep to the brand and style that works best for them! They want to improve their quality of life at home more.” If there’s another thing Walker’s prides itself on, it’s customer care. “I tell my people, ‘If you have a customer with an issue and you exceed their expectations, you’ve made a customer for life because they know they can trust you,’” Absalonson says. “So many people coming in are just stressed out, you want to give them the best treatment.” Walker’s Furniture Washington showrooms are located in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Kennewick, East Wenatchee, Yakima, Moses Lake, Walla Walla. It also has showrooms in Idaho in Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint.

Shaving & Grooming Putting our best face forward has meant rethinking personal grooming the past few months. With or without a mask — such as during video conferencing — the eyes definitely still have it (and eye makeup on Instagram and TikTok is over-the-top). That’s shone a light on brows, which, like beards and mustaches, is a split decision; some are letting it grow while others have turned a razor-sharp focus to pristine landscaping. And while shaving your brows is still on the fringes of popularity, look for ways to enhance them with glitter, colorant and even jewels.

Baking Thank the Brits for giving us a sweet alternative to cooking shows that in the past focused on fire, foulmouthed chefs or funky ingredients. More than a decade since the Great American Baking Show, we’ve gobbled our way through cake wars and cookie challenges, only to find ourselves not just consuming cooking videos but also making them ourselves. Whether you’re behind the camera or in front of your computer screen, bread has risen to the top of the list as a fan fave, followed by specialty cakes and outlandish creations like animal-shaped bread — frogs are trending — and rainbow layer pastries. 58 The Inlander’s Guide to Shopping Local 2020-2021
