THERE’S PLENTY TO DISCOVER and delight in — garden supplies, home furnishings, clothing and gifts — from the thriving Sprague Union District onward through Spokane Valley and into Liberty Lake.
A DESTINATION UNTO ITSELF, Coeur d’Alene’s quaint downtown shopping district has it all, from unexpected gifts and locally made fine artwork, plus plenty of restaurants and bars to rest and refresh at between stops.
Inlander Shop Local magazine includes only locally owned businesses, which means at least 50% of the ownership resides in the Spokane / Coeur d’Alene region. CENTRAL & SOUTH
SPOKANE
Head to the center of town to fulfill all of your shopping needs, including many you won’t know you have until you get there. There’s always something to discover in the ever-evolving downtown core, filled with clothing boutiques, both those offering sustainably focused, new-to-you pieces, plus shops filled with carefully curated collections that reflect the season’s latest looks. Entertainment sources also dot the central core, whether you’re a bookworm or a board gamer. Looking to spruce up your place? Make sure to stop in some of the region’s best art galleries and retail shops that collectively host dozens of regional artisans’ original work. Local vendors of everything a home needs to feel cozy and welcoming are also spread across the center of town. When it’s time to recharge after all this very walkable shopping, the options are endless: pastries, coffee, wine tasting, craft breweries, fine dining, burgers and anything else you crave. And the central core is a quick jump to even more great shopping, out in Airway Heights and up the South Hill to unique districts like Manito, South Perry and Lincoln Heights.

WINDFALL
A Tribal-inspired space with unique products from the Pacific Northwest and beyond
Y
ou’re having dinner at Masselow’s when your sweetie unexpectedly proposes? That’s a windfall. Your seat at the slots results in a mega jackpot win? That’s a windfall. Your overnight stay at Northern Quest Resort and Casino just got upgraded because of your Camas Rewards card? That’s a windfall. That unexpected good fortune is a windfall, which is also the name of Northern Quest’s exceptional, 13,000-squarefoot retail space. Located adjacent to KidsQuest, Windfall is stocked with a continuously rotating array of clothing and accessories, home décor, outdoor equipment, treats for the kids (and the fur babies) and more. “We do have unique products that speak to everyone,” says Kim McCoul,

resort retail manager, who has spent 12 years working with the Kalispel Tribe. Ladies apparel is popular right now, especially as the weather changes, says McCoul. Choose from national and international brands like PrAna, Lucky Brand and Ugg. Or go local with Spokane’s favorite casual clothier, The Great PNW, which has charmed shoppers with their witty, Northwest-focused hoodies, tees, hats and more. Men’s apparel is well-represented at Windfall, too, including Filson, a Seattle-based outfitter whose rugged clothing and related gear has been the gold standard in the lives of Northwesterners since the 1890s. The home décor section has plenty to peruse, with everything you’ll need to

make family time more special this holiday season. Or maybe you’re shopping for a gift? Their friendly staff is happy to help you find the perfect item. Remember to ask for a gift box! You might not expect to find furnishings here, but Windfall is not your typical retail space. A big seller is Northern Quest’s very popular bed. “People sleep on it when they stay here and fall in love with it,” McCoul says. Another popular feature at Windfall, which opened in 2018, is the store’s focus on local and regional brands. National favorites include Pendleton, whose blankets are just the thing for cold weather or for a welcome pop of color on your sofa or ottoman. Danner Boots will keep your feet warm and dry whatever the adventure, and, hailing from Spokane Valley, GSI Outdoors is your go-to for outdoor cooking and camping accessories. Speaking of food, Anchor Point Farms honey out of Nine Mile Falls, and Spiceology and Revival Tea Company, both from Spokane, are just a few of the local brands featured at Windfall. And
wouldn’t Shadow Seven goat milk soaps out of Newport be a lovely stocking stuffer or hostess gift this season? Windfall feels very open and inviting, with vintage and industrial display cases well-spaced, and cleverly arranged. The
store’s very location, with three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with light, is especially welcome in colder months. And the space above Windfall can be rented for large gatherings, like weddings, winter parties or an employee appreciation gathering. Every winter, McCoul loves bringing out the decorations and transforming Windfall into a magical winter wonderland for all who enter. “It’s like a giant snow globe,” she says.

DESIGN GOES TO THE MAX While many of us took on big home improvement and interior decorating projects during 2020’s quarantine, the evolution of our homes is constant — for comfort, functionality, personal expression and even a basic desire to keep up with ever-changing trends and tastes. While a preference for neutral paint colors, upholstery and other finishes has been a dominant vibe for its pleasant, calming effect, it appears that the 2020s are moving back towards the maximalist aesthetic. Think bright and bold colors, busy patterns and pattern mixing, wall murals, wallpaper and, yes, the continuation of the “cottagecore,” or “granny” look. Perhaps being forced to stay inside, surrounded by all those beige and white walls, got a little boring these past two-ish years, and now we’re all craving some upbeat color and funky views. Some popular home decorating trends, however, are here to stay, including adding more greenery to our indoor spaces via houseplants, transforming indoor spaces into multipurpose, multifunctional areas, and making our homes “smarter” via technology like smart lighting, which can be both decorative and functional.

NORTH SPOKANE North Spokane, encompassing everything north of the Spokane River, is a big place, but getting around is easy and there’s plenty of charming, shopping-centric pockets to explore. Take the North Monroe Business District, for example, a go-to for those who love to treasure hunt for vintage and antique relics that can transform both living spaces and closets into time-travel capsules. Just up the hill, the historic, neonlit Garland District awaits, with even more quirky, local shops — booksellers, clothing boutiques, music suppliers, a new brewery, several restaurants and beyond. On the Northeast side of town, there’s also Hillyard, which abounds with more vintage and antique vendors, plus a recently launched food truck park and several buzzworthy new restaurants. Go even further north and there’s still more to explore around the Wandermere area, which is home to several longtime, locally owned gift and home decor shops.

E
uropean Wax Center will transform how you think about hair removal, no matter what your experience has been with waxing or which areas you want waxed — brows, bikini lines, backs, fronts, even your face. In fact, they’re so sure you’ll discover “love at first wax,” your first visit is on the house for select waxes. Waxing is all they do at European Wax Center, which has more than 800 locations nationwide, each one locally owned and community-oriented. No detail goes unnoticed, from
EWC’s Exclusive Comfort Wax scrupulously clean facilities to highly trained estheticians to the complete line of after-wax products they offer to enhance your experience between waxing, including products that can minimize unwanted hair growth. Believing everyone deserves to look and
Tami and Dave Cavanaugh feel their best, European Wax Center takes great care preparing your skin, gently applying their patented Comfort Wax, followed by soothing post-wax serums. Your wax takes place in your private, locking suite, ideally in 15 minutes or less and, of course, with client comfort as the top priority. Sound expensive? No! “You get luxury service without luxury pricing,” Tami Cavanaugh, a former nurse who along with husband Dave opened their first EWC location in 2017. In addition to Spokane Valley and Northpointe Plaza, the Cavanaugh’s are expanding to Hayden’s Prairie Shopping Center this fall. The more you wax, the better your skin responds, as hair returns finer and thinner, says Dave, who loves not having to shave his face for two or three weeks after waxing. Not only are the Cavanaugh’s hands-on owners, they’re tried-and-true fans of what European Wax Center can do.

W
alker’s Furniture can do a lot with 250,000 square feet of warehouse space. Like providing their customers with three big things: selection, a low-price promise and availability, says co-owner Gary Absalonson. The family-owned business that began in Spokane in 1980 with a specialty in solid oak has since grown to 14 locations throughout Washington, Idaho and Oregon with a full line of furniture stylings for any room from high-quality manufacturers around the world. HOME IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE Think Flexsteel, Klaussner, Magnussen, Serta, Tempurpedic. Whether it’s “shabby chic” or “country farmhouse,” Walker’s knows what customers want. “The most important thing is we stay on the cutting edge of style and design and yet keep the quality high so they’ll last,” Absalonson says. “We keep our prices low and we have all the latest trends and styles so we have what people are looking for.”
A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Absalonson says the furniture store is able to keep its mattress prices lower than many of its competitors because it has such a high volume of sales. “We’ve been selling a lot of mattresses because people are concerned that they get better rest. We have some of the best selection and brands in the region with over 40 styles so we can match people’s sleep needs to the brand and style that works best for them!” Walker’s prides itself on customer care. ‘‘If we have a customer with an issue and we exceed their expectations, we’ve created trust,’” Absalonson says. “So many people coming in are just stressed out, we want to give them the best treatment.” Walker’s Furniture Washington showrooms are located in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Kennewick, East Wenatchee, Yakima, Moses Lake, Walla Walla. It also has showrooms in Idaho in Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint.
TIDBITS ABOUT WALKER’S • They have a selection of furniture designs that include contemporary, rustic, mid-century, traditional, and casual, all to highlight your personal style

VINTAGE OR BUST
If it feels like the region is welcoming a never-ending stream of vintage boutiques, you’re right: Vintage everything is in the midst of a major revival. While the Inland Northwest has long been home to experienced curators and booth-filled vendor malls where you can stumble upon furniture, art, clothing and who knows what else that’s decades or even a century old, there have been been plenty of newcomers arriving to the scene in the last several years. So why now? One big reason is the ongoing culture shift toward sustainable living practices, and a greater public awareness of fast fashion’s dark side (environmental harms, overproduction, poor labor conditions, etc.). Buying secondhand, no matter the era, is just better for the planet. We can also thank social media’s access to celebrities and influencers for some of this increased interest in the fashions and decor of yore. Some recent trends from that sphere include the younger generation’s sudden interest in cowboy and Western-style boots, baggy “mom” jeans, bucket hats and a general embrace of 1990s and early 2000s styles. Even if going full vintage isn’t your style, the region also boasts plenty of locally operated consignment boutiques that embrace secondhand’s sustainability by offering gently used, high-quality clothing at deep discounts.

The East side of town is also home to a wide variety of shopping destinations and retail pockets. Starting just outside of the downtown core, the burgeoning Sprague Union District is a must-stop, where renovated historic brick storefronts house some of the best home decor and furniture vendors in the region. Heading out toward Spokane Valley from there, stops along the way range from massive vendor malls that are well worth an hour or more of browsing. Art galleries, boutiques, garden and yard decor shops, and nearly limitless options for a mid-trip meal are other destinations to be explored as you head through

CARPET BARN Choosing the perfect flooring is fun and easy when you have the right team to help you
P
eople are demanding more of their homes these days. A place to work, to play, to relax — our homes need to be even more multifunctional than ever. That means we’re putting more demands on home flooring, too, which must be durable, easy-toclean, befitting our lifestyle, and pleasing to
look at and touch. If your flooring isn’t up to the task, Carpet Barn is your friendly, family-owned destination for carpet, as well as tile, vinyl, stone, even hardwood. Why Carpet Barn? “From start to finish you deal with one individual, your salesperson,” says Pete Ines, assistant manager at their store at Sprague and Freya, which is one of three Carpet Barn locations. “We assist in your product selection, project coordination, and installation, which is how it should be to make sure everything goes smoothly.” Carpet Barn also has a location on the Newport Hwy, and Carpet Barn Liquidation in the Spokane Valley, where you’ll find special deals on rolls ends, discontinued flooring, and clearance from the main stores. Having three locations means Carpet Barn has lots of stock to choose from, and not only did they beef up their stock at the beginning of this year, but they also have solid, long-lasting relationships with the manufacturers they carry. That translates to more choices and a short-
C
er lead time when you’re ready to commit to the ultra-plush Champagne Sparkle that would be oh-so-perfect for the soon-to-be baby’s room. If your salesperson has a question, they can call upon any number of fellow Carpet Barn associates — no waiting for someone from another store in another state to get back to you by email. And because customers’ shopping habits continue to evolve, Carpet Barn offers both an online and in-store experience. Look up products online. Learn more about flooring types, like laminate versus luxury vinyl. Be inspired by an extensive online gallery of project ideas. Upload a photo of your space to get a virtual sense of how your flooring choices will look. Or head to the store and ask for a 9-inch sample (larger samples can be custom-ordered), which you can take home to view with your lighting and décor. Need more reasons to check out Carpet Barn? How about installation, because when it comes to flooring, you want it done right the
first time. Financing? Yes, they can help with that. And if you have a spot that is just begging for a custom rug, ask about their binding services, which lets you tailor the carpet to the space — condo, family home, apartment, even your RV! “We have a team of ready and happy-towork installers, helpful sales staff, and a huge in-stock selection,” Ines says, “which we have beefed up this year to specifically deal with product delays on some special-order options.”
A TRADITION OF SERVICE
arpet Barn’s Pete Ines remembers his grandpa, who was a whiz at fixing things, from the fencing on their North Idaho farmland to vintage cars. He loved going to the hardware store with his grandpa and recalls even now how the staff was so helpful — totally focused on all his grandpa’s projects. That’s a
memory that comes back to him when he’s helping customers find exactly what they’re looking for. “Our focus is the personalized experience,” says Ines, who worked his way up at Carpet Barn from stocking and shipping, through receiving to sales. “It’s a dynamic we’ve all worked hard to meet.”

COEUR D’ALENE &
NORTH IDAHO
East of Liberty Lake and on into North Idaho you’ll find the scenic and shopping-centric setting of downtown Coeur d’Alene. While this North Idaho gem is a popular tourist destination in the warmer months, its myriad vendors of fine art, locally made gifts, pet supplies, furniture and even a year-round Christmas-themed store are all reasons to stay for a day in the Lake City, no matter the season. Sherman Avenue, starting near the Coeur d’Alene Resort and heading east on foot, is a natural place to start. Don’t forget the Midtown neighborhood, which offers some of Coeur d’Alene’s best venues for vintage and antique lovers, in addition to local eateries boasting everything from ramen to classic pub fare. Another muststop is the sleek Village at Riverstone, where a plethora of local shops and restaurants also await your discovery.
