THE INSIDE LINE

Welcome to the 2021 racing season, and the latest edition of the Inside Line. Here at Doric, we have a proud history in motorsport circles over the past 17 years, along the way forming some great long-term relationships with some of the biggest names in the industry. Since our first sponsorship foray in 2004, we have participated in over 2,000 Supercars, Super2, Superbike, Supersport, Touring Car Masters and GT races, with hundreds of wins and podium finishes to show for it. In 2021, our racing family continues to evolve, with some great new partnerships. Over the past 11 years, Will Davison has represented us at the very pinnacle of Supercars competition, including on the top step of the Bathurst 1000 podium. Will comes from one of the great Australian motorsport families; he lives and breathes the sport. This year Will returns home to Dick Johnson Racing, reuniting with the squad where he made his full-time debut in the class and claimed his first-ever race wins. Joining Will at DJR is Anton de Pasquale, a star in the making who has already made his presence felt in the category. They are an exciting combo, especially so now that they are both in premium equipment. Partnering with Dick Johnson Racing is an honour, the team have so much history and remain the benchmark others have to beat.

Our love of racing extends beyond four wheels, so the opportunity to be involved with second-generation racer Oli Bayliss, Mike Jones, and the DesmoSport Ducati squad is thrilling. Oli is making waves following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Troy, while Mike claimed the 2019 Australian Superbike Championship in the final race of the season for the team, which was a just reward for an incredible year in the saddle. Meanwhile, we are also honoured to be supporting the next generation of racing superstars via Hunter McElrea. After proving his ability in the formative classes in Australia, Hunter has taken North America by storm, setting up what will no doubt be an incredible career. So why motorsport? Unlike any other, here in motorsport, we can totally immerse ourselves in the action and join in on the excitement at close quarters throughout both Australia and New Zealand. Motorsport is much more than a branding exercise; the fans are passionate like no others, and the relationships we’ve developed over the years with our ambassadors and clients are second-to-none. Thank you for your patronage and ongoing support, we hope you have a great day here trackside. Tom Arciuli

POINT TO PROVE

2021 Results

Championship position | 4th (274 pts behind 1st) Podiums | 7 Best Finish | 2nd (3 times)

For Will Davison, the 2021 Supercars season is all about redemption. After a blistering start to the 2020 year, Davison was constantly at the head of the pack and even topped the season-opening test day right here at The Bend. When the Championship dispersed after a non-event at The Australian Grand Prix, only one driver failed to return post-lock down: Davison. With his major backer throwing in the towel and his team pulling the pin, the 19-time Supercars race winner had to regroup. Representing Doric in the Supercars ESeries was the first step, before ultimately landing a seat alongside Cameron Waters at Tickford Racing for the lone two-driver event of the year – The Bathurst 1000. The event was strong for the duo, who finished second, giving Davison his fourth visit to the Mount Panorama podium. Better things were to come for Davison, with the announcement that he was to join a fresh-look Dick Johnson Racing squad for the current season. The signing resulted in a homecoming of sorts for Davison, who drove for the team in the 2005 enduro races before making his full-time debut in the main game in 2006.

6 /

Strong results followed: third in the 2007 Bathurst 1000 was backed up by a thirdplace later in the year in Bahrain, while 2008 provided two wins at Eastern Creek and Winton, and ultimately fifth in the season standings. One change for Davison is his race number: no longer sporting 18, he now proudly wears 17, the combination made so successful by team patron Johnson and later Scott McLaughlin, with the number having won eight of the outfit’s ten Championships. One carryover from McLaughlin’s threepeat of Series’ crowns is his race engineer, with Richard Harris continuing to call the shots for Davison as he finds his feet in his return home.

The Season So Far Consistency has been key to Will Davison’s season, who now sits fourth in the point standings after five events. Podiums at Bathurst, Symmons Plains, The Bend, and Hidden Valley have been capped off by the two most recent pole positions in Darwin.

ANTON DE PASQUALE.

UPRISING

2021 Results

Championship position | 8th (599 pts behind 1st) Podiums | 4 Best Finish | 1st (1 time)

A karting prodigy, Anton de Pasquale has been one to beat ever since he graduated to circuit racing in 2012. Quickly adapting to Formula Ford, in his rookie season, Anton was straight on the front running pace, claiming three top-flight wins before the year was out. By 2013, Anton was an unstoppable force, registering seven wins, 18 podiums, three poles and seven fastest laps from 22 races en route to the Formula Ford title. For 2014, Europe called, and Anton began the climb up the Formula 1 ladder.

Last year was a breakout year, with further podiums at The Bend and Sydney Motorsport Park, with the highlight coming at Hidden Valley, where he broke through for a maiden victory. Also, third place overall in the BP Supercars All-Stars Eseries with four wins underlined his adaptability. An off-season move to Dick Johnson Racing has already shown that he can be a champion in the future.

The Formula Renault 1.6 title didn’t know which way to look – from 14 races, Anton won nine, had 12 podiums, nine poles, nine fastest laps and the championship cup.

The Season So Far

However, stepping up to Formula Renault 2.0 proved more challenging, with a lack of budget ultimately curtailing his 2015 run.

Two debut podiums at Symmons Plains was backed up by a further third place at The Bend, followed by his first victory for the squad at the South Australian circuit in race two.

A return to Australia in 2016 saw his first foray into the world of tin tops, with a season in the Super 2 Series witnessing constant improvement, which peaked with a fine third place in the season’s showcase event at Mount Panorama. Breakthrough wins at Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park saw Anton finish P4 in the 2017 standings before receiving the call up to the big league the following year with Erebus Motorsport.

8 /

Multiple top-ten results showed the pace was there, which was proven in 2019 when he broke through for a pair of podium finishes at Phillip Island and The Bend.

Anton’s first season at DJR has proven to be a rollercoaster ride to date.

Impressively, he has also registered the first three pole positions of his career in as many races between The Bend and Hidden Valley, the first driver to achieve this feat since Mark Skaife 30 years ago.

Doric Ducati has a great ring to it, doesn’t it?

The Season So Far

The DesmoSport Ducati squad was formed in 2016 by Troy Bayliss and Ben Henry.

Mike Jones The season started strongly for the twice Australian Superbike Championship winner, with a second and a third from the opening event at Winton Raceway.

Ben is a former Superbike racer of note, while Troy is a legend of the sport. A winner in MotoGP, he is better known for his World Superbike exploits, claiming three world titles, with his 52 wins from 152 starts placing him third on the all-time wins list. Ninety-four podiums, 26 poles, 35 fastest laps, his stats are enormous. For 2021, the Doric Ducati program expands to two bikes, with the son of a gun Oli Bayliss joining the squad. With the 2020 national Superbike scene shut down due to the pandemic, Oli made his first Superbike races in lower-level events. This year stepping up to the big league, he has plenty of highly experienced help in his corner, no more so than his teammate, Mad Mike Jones. One common thread throughout his career has remained: winning championships. From the Australian Mini Moto Championship in 2006, Mike has gone on to win the Australian Junior 150cc and 80cc titles, Superstock 600, FX Nationals 600, and the Australian Superbike Championship, which he claimed in 2015, and in 2019, with a final-round thriller for DesmoSport Ducati. Mike has raced in Europe and has been a wildcard in both World Superbike and MotoGP.

OLI BAYLISS

DUCATI

The second round at Wakefield Park saw Mad Mike come home with finishes of fourth and third, while he was a non-starter at Hidden Valley after a fall in qualifying sidelined him for the weekend. Oli Bayliss His rookie campaign kicked off at Winton with a seventh and fourth, while a mechanical non-finish in the Wakefield Park opener was backed up by a solid recovery to seventh in race two. Following a strong fourth in the Hidden Valley opener, the son of a gun put in a brilliant performance to pass multiple champion Wayne Maxwell to claim the win, the youngest victor in series history.

HUNTER MCELREA.

AMERICA CALLING 2021 Results

Championship position | 5th (76 pts behind 1st) Podiums | 2 Best Finish | 1st (1 time)

If you haven’t heard the name Hunter McElrea before – take note, he is one young man on a mission.

Graduating to Indy Pro 2000 in 2020, Hunter was a constant threat for the podium, placing in the top three six times from the 17 races before ultimately breaking through in the season finale with a race win.

Backed by Doric New Zealand, Hunter is making waves in the USA as the latest Antipodean driver to climb the ranks of Indycar, following in the footsteps of champions such as Scott Dixon and Will Power.

Returning with the ace Pabst Racing outfit, Hunter is looking to succeed before graduating to Indy Lites and ultimately Indycar.

His circuit racing career kicked off in earnest at the tender age of 15, when he stepped behind the wheel of a familyrun Formula Ford, with success coming almost immediately.

The Season So Far

Fast forward to 2018, and with several seasons under his belt, learning his craft at state-level meets around the country, Hunter blitzed the Australian Formula Ford Series for the talent factory that is Sonic Motor Racing Services. Led by the highly experience Mick Ritter, Hunter claimed an incredible 13 wins from 21 race starts, 16 total podium finishes, three pole positions and seven fastest laps. At the end of the season, Hunter headed Stateside to chase the dream of racing in Indycar. First up was the runoff for the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 Scholarship, which Hunter won against an ultra-competitive field, taking with him $200,000 worth of backing into the 2019 season. Hunter won four races from the 14 starts, including 11 podiums, six pole positions and four fastest laps, claiming second in the final standings by the slimmest of margins.

12 /

The season started with a bang for Hunter, winning the second race of the season opener at Barber Motorsport Park, and a third place on the streets of St Petersburg. A tough outing on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course was backed up with a fifth place on the Lucas Oil Raceway Oval, while last time out at Road America resulted in finishes of seventh and sixth.

NO SECOND CHANCE Youth safety program to help save teenage lives.

Doric and Cowdroy are proud to partner with No Second Chance (N2C), the revolutionary youth safety program developed to save teenage lives arising from the tragic consequences of youth violence and road accidents.

There’s no doubt that these are confronting issues, but N2C preaches the cause of making smart decisions, and since 2013, it has reached many school groups around the country. Incredible presenters, and the use of motorsport as a medium to cut through to the target audience, has given N2C a successful platform to convey its message. Key speakers include Paul Stanley and Matt Speakman, both of whom have paid a huge cost for other people’s bad decisions. Paul’s 15-year-old son Matthew tragically lost his life due to a senseless bashing at a party in 2006.

More information can be found at: www.n2c.com.au

16 /

Subsequently, Paul has delivered his message to over 150,000 school students.

Matt meanwhile was hit by a drunk driver off his motorcycle in 1993, suffering paraplegia. Since then, Matt has gone on to successfully race in various classes, including Porsches, while he has also been a member of the Australian Paralympics Alpine Ski team, and campaigned in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The stories Paul and Matt tell are emotional, but they hammer home a point. The ambassador, and master of ceremonies for the program is renowned Supercars driver Warren Luff, who conveys a message of being focused, staying safe, and how making positive life decisions can open the doors to allow you to live your dreams.

DORIC RACING

IN TOWNSVILLE

Doric has been involved with this event in Townsville since its very first edition in 2009, with plenty of highlights along the way.

2009

Doric backed the pair of Paul Cruickshank Racing Ford Falcons for the debut event, as driven by Fabian Coulthard and Michael Patrizi (pictured, literally leaving the door wide open). Both drivers registered a best finish of 15th place from the two 200km races.

2010

Our backing in 2010 moved across to the James Rosenberg entry (as prepared by Stone Brothers Racing) with Tim Slade behind the wheel. Slade finished 12th in both races. James Moffat, meanwhile, was representing the brand in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series and ended the weekend with a best result of second, our first Townsville podium.

2011

Doric’s relationship with Will Davison kicked off in earnest. The Ford Performance Racing driver claimed third in the opening race, with his teammate Mark Winterbottom finishing in the same position on Sunday after scoring pole for the opening race.

2012

Doric backed Mark Winterbottom finished second in the opening race after starting from grid position one, while Will Davison came through to finish third in race two.

18 /

2013

Great success! One-two for Doric with Will Davison leading home Mark Winterbottom in the opening race, with Will’s victory burnout ending up in the concrete barrier! Mark claimed pole for the Sunday race as well.

2014

Doric backing followed Will Davison to Erebus Motorsport, where he scored his first podium for the AMG Mercedes squad in the opening race of the one-off three-race format. Chaz Mostert joined FPR, and scored a best race result of fifth, while Mark Winterbottom registered a top finish of sixth.

2015

The event returned to a two-race format, with Will Davison scoring a best result of 12th, while new Erebus teammate Ashley Walsh had a tougher time with a best finish of 22nd.

2016

Will Davison moved to the single-car Tekno Autosports squad and claimed a best finish of fifth place before winning that year’s Bathurst 1000.

2017

A more challenging outing for the team, with Will Davison having a best result of eighth on Sunday from 17th on the grid.

2018

Moving across the similarly single-car 23Red Racing, Will Davison had a best race finish of ninth aboard the team’s Falcon.

2019

The 23Red squad moved to be a part of the greater four-car Tickford Racing squad, with Will Davison having a best race finish of seventh.

1808 Rick Kelly has completed the most laps of anyone in Townsville, eight more than Winterbottom, although he has only led three laps. Winterbottom, meanwhile, has finished on the lead lap every time he has made it to the chequered flag (28 out of 29 times), to Kelly’s 25 lead-lap finishes. Frosty’s exit on lap 47 of 64 in the Sunday race from 2019 has proven to be the difference

TOWNSVILLE FUN FACTS THE least fun fact of all time: Crocodiles have been reported in Ross Creek, i.e. the creek that the race track crosses twice. Ross Creek is a part of the Ross River system, which infamously lends its name to Ross River Fever, a non-lethal but debilitating tropical disease brought on by mosquito bites. Joy. FORMAT tale: Last year, in the battle to keep the Supercars circus on the road, Townsville played host to consecutive events, which each hosted three sprint races apiece. Those two event weekends were the first time that Townsville had played host to three races since 2014 when a pair of 125km races were topped off with a Sunday 250km race. This year’s format sees a 250km race on both Saturday and Sunday, with each having a dedicated qualifying session and top-ten shootout. During the races will be two compulsory stops, and each car must take on board at least 120L of fuel. TWICE in the history of the event have races been cut short due to time certainty. The first was race two of 2010, when one lap was lost, the second in race two of 2019, when six laps were lost due to rain. BACK to a 500: 2021 will represent the second time since 2009 that the event is run to a total distance of 500km. An event distance of 400km is the norm, although last year’s twin events featured 333km of racing split between three races each. A TOTAL of 15 drivers have made one career event start in Townville, with the list including internationals such as Jacques Villeneuve, Robert Dahlgren, Richie Stanaway and Maro Engel. The lone start locals have included Ash Walsh, Andrew Thompson, Taz Douglas, Alex Rullo, Tony Ricciardello, Mark McNally, Warren Luff and Kurt Kostecki, while Bryce Fullwood, Jake Kostecki and Jack Smith are looking to move off the mark this weekend. FIVE times in the history of the event has every car made it to the finish of a race in Townsville, and they have all come since the last race of the 2019 event. TYPICALLY the Supercars visit to Townsville coincides with school holidays, in part because the race loops past Townsville State High School, which is located at the final turn. The school grounds are also typically used as a car park on race weekends. Hands up if your education would have been improved if your school was a race track?

IN Paul Dumbrell’s six race starts in Townsville, he made a habit of being a hard charger. Despite an average starting position of 18.7, he ended his career with an average finishing position of 9.2, seventh on the all-time list. In every single race contested, he improved upon his starting position, especially so in his final race, where he climbed from 28th (and last) at the start to be placed ninth at the chequered flag. OF THE 2021 drivers only Macauley Jones and Garry Jacobson have never led a lap in Townsville. Last year’s six races saw Nick Percat, Scott Pye, Jack Le Brocq and Todd Hazelwood lead a race at the venue for the first time. WHEN is a street circuit not really a street circuit? In Townsville, about 70% of the track is permanent, even with some permanent concrete walls installed. The pit building is also a permanent fixture, with its various areas able to be rented (outside of race weekends) from the City of Townsville Council.

TOWNSVILLE INSIDER TRADING Best Local Feed: You typically can’t go too far wrong with a trip up to The Strand – options galore, but we would typically settle on the Seaview Hotel or similar, it’s all good! Best Local Beer: You cannot go past the Townsville Brewery, which is located within the clock tower building just over the Ross Creek bridge on the corner of Flinders and Denham. A short stagger from the track, but worth it. Best Local Things to do After Racing: There are two main things to do in the area, because: Townsville. 1) Scale Castle Hill – car is easier, using your legs is more energetic. 2) Visit Magnetic Island – use a boat, swimming 8km can be a strain. Best Traffic Tip: As typical with street events, free street parking is a hike away, or you can park nearby and get severely price gouged. Consider taking one of the free Sunbus options, especially if you plan on sinking a tin or two.
