WELCOME W

ELCOME TO the latest edition of Inside Line for the 2017 Perth SuperSprint Continuing on from a very successful 2016 season, the Doric and Cowdroy Supercar Racing programs will continue again this year with front-running Supercar outfit Tekno Autosports. We’re very proud of our committment to our motorsport program. After introducing ALG sister company Cowdroy to our motorsport program two years ago, we’ll again see significant Cowdroy branding on the outer livery of the #19 Holden Supercar throught the 2017 season. Doric branding will also feature on the inside and outer livery of the racer and will be seen right around the world via the series’ extensive television coverage. We are also pleased to be able to continue our long relationship with V8 Supercar driver Will Davison, who will be behind the wheel at Tekno this year. It’s great to have Will on board once again as our Doric brand ambassador for the seventh consecutive year. He is such a big part of our racing family and we’re proud to stand beside him as he continues to push to new heights on the race track. We are also continuing our support of our longest running ambassador;

motorsport legend John Bowe. We have supported JB in the Touring Car Masters series for many years and it will be thrilling to watch him strive to back up his 2016 series win. JB is entertaining, engaging and a legend who continues to deliver value for the Doric business. ALG is proud of our various associations in motorsport, with the 2017 season marking Doric’s 13th year delivering money can’t buy experiences for our valued clients and staff. Our sponsorships have taken our brand exposure to a new level and helped raise the professionalism and image of both Doric and Cowdroy. Motorsport is competitive, exciting, passionate and innovative. The team here at Doric and Cowdroy stand for all

the same great values. We hope you enjoy the Perth event with Doric and Cowdroy and follow our racing adventures throughout the rest of the 2017 racing season. NIGEL LONG Group CEO, ALG

HIGH DORIC AND COWDROY ARE AIMING FOR THE TOP IN 2017 WITH ONE OF SUPERCARS BRIGHTEST STARS

D

ORIC AND Cowdroy are back in 2017 with a new brand marketing and customer activation program. Central to the 2017 program is the continuation of the exciting partnership with front-running Supercar outfit Tekno Autosports, supporting its racing ventures throughout Australia and New Zealand.. Parent company Alchin Long Group (ALG) will be building upon many years of loyal commitment to Doric Ambassador Will Davison, joining the star driver in his role with Tekno Autosports. Doric branding will feature throughout the inside and outside of the #19 Holden Supercar and be seen widely via the series’ extensive Australia-wide television coverage. Cowdroy branding will also feature on the outer livery of the Tekno entry during the 2017 Championship season. Doric is excited to continue its long-standing relationship with racing star Will Davison in 2017, with the driver continuing his role as Brand Ambassador for the 7th consecutive year. John Bowe will also continue into his 10th year as a Doric Ambassador contesting the Touring Car Masters series and is looking to back up his 2016 series win in his all-Aussie Holden SLR5000 Torana. While door and window hardware manufacturing and racing high-speed Supercars may appear to have little in common, Tekno Autosports, Doric and Cowdroy are proving they’re truly a match made in heaven. In just four short years, Tekno Autosports has gone from a rookie race team to a front-running force in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. The popular team first stepped into the series in 2011, but its roots run deep into the early 2000’s grassroots motorsport scene.

Like Doric and Cowdroy, at the heart of Tekno are its personnel. The squad has formed one of the tightest, most effective and inspirational organisations in the industry thanks to a constant drive and a rich winning culture. The team is made up of industry leading engineers and mechanics whose combined skills are driving the team to the top ranks of the sport. Together Doric, Cowdroy and Tekno continue to climb the ladder of success by driving innovation and striving towards a bigger and better future. That’s why, when long term Doric Ambassador and Supercar star Will Davison made the switch to Tekno in 2016, it made perfect sense for Doric and Cowdroy to follow. The exciting partnership has seen the #19 Tekno Holden Commodore race throughout Australia and New Zealand sporting both Doric and Cowdroy branding. For the team’s star, Will Davison, the move has paid dividends over and over again, with the driver claiming two race wins, including the biggest of them all; the Bathurst 1000. The experienced racer is a perfect fit with the exciting and innovative team, having amassed 18 wins and 52 podium finishes over his illustrious Supercar career. Davison wasted no time getting up to speed in 2016, racking up his first win with the new squad just two rounds into the season. After a fantastic year on track in 2016, Davison has his eyes set firmly on the finish line this year.

A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH ALG INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER, DAMIAN ROCCA

A

s an Industrial Designer at ALG, Damian’s role revolves around product development, which includes taking care of the product idea from conception to production, concept generation and design, product testing, identifying problems and solutions for them and assisting to bring products to manufacture. While completing his Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney, Damian started working at ALG in 2013, initially for just one day a week before joining the group full-time a month later. For Damian, Industrial Design is all about the beauty of a product. Some of his design idols include: •Dieter Rams - a German industrial designer closely associated with the company Braun. •Jonathan Ive - a British industrial designer who is currently the Chief Design Officer of Apple. Ive is widely seen as the modern day Dieter Rams and Damian is a big fan of his design for the iPhone 4, particularly the balance of weight, size and simplicity. •Achille Castiglioni - an Italian furniture designer who was a big advocate of the Form follows function, a design principle which has a lot of modern architecture trends. Even from a young age, Damian was in love with design. His dad was an electrical engineer and taught him about the intricacies of machines. As he got older, Damian found that he enjoyed creating things and working with his hands, so a career in design was a natural fit - especially for someone who aspired to be an inventor. Let’s take a look at what Damian gets up to in a typical day.

6am

I’m supposed to be up at 6am but I get a couple snoozes in before waking up. I get ready for work and head to the gym.

6:45am

We have a Anytime Fitness gym just down the road from us, which is great if you want to squeeze in a quick workout before or after work.

8:35am

Get to work. I’m running a bit late today, had to finish that last set at the gym! While my computer’s turning on, I go make a coffee in the kitchen and prepare some breakfast.Start digging into breakfast as I go through my emails.

8:50am

With emails out of the way, I plan the day ahead and prioritise tasks. Today’s top tasks include concept generation for a patio door handle and testing work at Azuma.

9am

I answer emails from suppliers, provide updates on product drawings and have a catch up with David and the product managers on my current projects.

10am

Start on my first project for the day. I jump on to SolidWorks and dive in. SolidWorks is amazing and I spend the majority of my time on the program for product design work.

11:30am

Take a break from SolidWorks for a couple minutes to daydream about lunch. I’m getting concerned that what I packed for lunch isn’t going to be enough so I start creating backup plans. I brought some fruit along so maybe that will help.

11:35am

Hit the factory floor to check out some powdercoating work Pablo is working on. While I’m here I go to check some reworked stock for quality purposes.

12pm

One of our suppliers sent us some new product samples so I take a look at them. After assembling the product, they don’t seem to be working properly and I’m trying to figure it out. I run it by Aritesh who’s great at diagnosing product issues.

12:30pm

Lunch time! It’s spaghetti today so I’m extra excited. During lunch with the team we talk about the new iPhone coming out and I inevitably get drawn into a debate with Josh about Apple vs. Android.

1pm

Meeting with one of our product managers to talk about a customer inquiry, plus a catch up on one of the new door handles that we’re working on together.

1:30pm

Walk down to Azuma for some testing working. I show Mike and Alex the prototype we’re going to test and then jump in the test rig with Ash. We have a new product prototype and we need to perform a test to see how the product handles extreme conditions.

3pm

Skype session with one of our suppliers in China. They’re a few hours behind us so it’s always best to Skype in

13 /

the arvo. We work together on a recent manufacturing issue and we agree on a design change as a solution.

3:30pm

Afternoon slump is setting in so I go make myself a strong cup of tea - Lipton Black - to keep my day going. I’m keen to put together the test results and send it over to the customer so I get on that right away.

4:30pm

It’s a lot quieter in the office during this time of the day so it’s the perfect time to get in the zone for some intense, creative work. One of my favourite artists is Chet Faker - he makes great chilled music and I find it really helps with boosting creativity. I plug in the headphones and start sketching different designs on a piece of paper. Keeping it old school. I also look around on some Pinterest boards and design blogs for inspiration.

5pm

Call it a day and log off. Hit the road and hope the M4’s not busy.

6pm

M4 was busy so I get home a little later than usual. I have soccer training tonight so I grab a quick snack - banana always works for me - and jet out the door.

6:30

Soccer training from 6.30pm until 8pm.

10:30pm

I’m knackered after a big day so I hit the sack earlier than usual. Gotta get that sleep in to do it all over again tomorrow!

6 THINGS TO WATCH IN PERTH WITH JOHN BOWE 2017 saw some big changes in the Supercars field. From driver movements, to manufacturer swaps and new tyres, this season is set to throw up plenty of surprises. No one knows more about this than Australian Touring Car legend and Doric Ambassador John Bowe. Over his years in the sport, Bowe has seen it all, so there was no one better qualified to give us the run down on the things to watch this weekend on track.

THE TYRE TEST “The biggest change in 2017 is the new tyre. It’s the first big change since 2002. It’s made in a new mould and the construction is totally new and different. The better resourced teams have best chance of getting on top of it quickly. It will be interesting to see whether any smaller teams can get on top and challenge the power house teams like Triple Eight and Penske”

MCLAUGHLIN MAGIC “Having spent several years hanging around Scott Mclaughlin in the Wilson Security garage, I have very high respect for his ability. Penske has put everything in place to be a powerhouse, including engineer Ludo Lacroix, so I would expect Scotty to be challenging for the Championship this year.”

THE TRIPLE EIGHT THREE “The internal battle at Triple Eight will be very interesting. Triple Eight will be vying for the Championship, but it will be interesting to see which driver is on top. Jamie’s focus is impressive and that shows in his championships. Van Gisbergen reminds me of Lowndes when he was younger; freestyle and gung ho. And Craig is still at height of his driving prowess. So it will be interesting to see how that plays out this year.”

DAVISON DYNAMITE “Will Davison is part of the Doric family and he’s a fantastic driver. I do wonder whether a small team can give him the resources to challenge for the Championship. They certainly fight above their weight, but a championship is won week in and week out. But if Will goes his whole career and doesn’t win a championship, I’ll be very disappointed.”

DRIVING STANDARDS SHIFT “Some rule changes this year mean there is no such thing as a redress. In the past if you made a mistake, you could make up for it on track and you didn’t get a penalty. That is no longer the case. You might think it could make the drivers take it a little easier, but they are hard-core and I don’t think it will impact the way they drive at all.”

SIMONA “I watched Simona test last year and she is a very serious race driver. Being her first year, I don’t expect her to have amazing results. These cars are tricky and very style dependant. But working with Kellys and their very good engineers, I think over time she’ll definitely be one to watch.”
