WELCOME W

ELCOME TO the latest edition of Inside Line for the 2016 Gold Coast 600. This year we’ve changed the way we share our Doric and Cowdroy V8 Supercar Racing programs with you. Bigger and better than ever before, we’ve teamed up with front-running V8 Supercar outfit Tekno Autosports for the 2016 season. We’re very proud of these changes to our 2016 program. After introducing ALG sister company Cowdroy to our motorsport program last year, we’ve again seen significant Cowdroy branding on the outer livery of the #19 Holden Supercar throught the 2016 season. Doric branding has also featured on the inside of the racer and has been seen right around the world via the series’ extensive television coverage. We are also pleased to be able to continue our long relationship with V8 Supercar driver Will Davison, who has been behind the wheel at Tekno this year. It’s great to have Will on board once again as our Doric brand ambassador for the sixth consecutive year. He is such a big part of our racing family and we’re proud to stand beside him during this new venture at Tekno. We are also continuing our support of our longest running ambassador; motorsport legend John Bowe. We have supported JB in the Touring Car Masters

series for many years and it’s exciting to watch him strive to back up his 2015 series win. JB is entertaining, engaging and a legend who continues to deliver value for the Doric business. ALG is proud of our various associations in motorsport, with the 2016 season marking Doric’s 12th year delivering money can’t buy experiences for our valued clients and staff. Our sponsorships have taken our brand exposure to a new level and helped raise the professionalism and image of the Doric brand. Now we hope to continue this exposure for Cowdroy. Motorsport is competitive, exciting, passionate and innovative. The team here at Doric and Cowdroy stand for all the same great values.

We hope you enjoy the Gold Coast event with Doric and Cowdroy and follow our racing adventures throughout the rest of the 2016 V8 Supercar Championship season. NIGEL LONG Group CEO, ALG

FLYING HIGH DORIC AND COWDROY ARE AIMING FOR THE TOP IN 2016 WITH ONE OF SUPERCARS BRIGHTEST STARS

D

ORIC AND Cowdroy have a new brand marketing and customer activation program for 2016. Central to the 2016 program is an exciting new partnership with front-running V8 Supercar outfit Tekno Autosports, supporting its racing ventures throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Parent company Alchin Long Group (ALG) will be building upon many years of loyal commitment to Doric Ambassador Will Davison, joining the star driver in his new role with Tekno Autosports. Doric branding will feature throughout the inside of the #19 Holden V8 Supercar cabin and be seen widely via the series’ extensive Australiawide television coverage. Cowdroy branding will also feature on the outer livery of the Tekno entry during the 2016 Championship season. Doric is excited to continue its long-standing relationship with racing star Will Davison in 2016, with the driver continuing his role as Brand Ambassador for the 6th consecutive year.

John Bowe will also continue into his 10th year as a Doric Ambassador contesting the Touring Car Masters series and is looking to back up his 2015 series win in his all-Aussie Holden SLR5000 Torana While door and window hardware manufacturing and racing Supercars may appear to have little in common, Tekno Autosports, Doric and Cowdroy are proving they’re truly a match made in heaven. In just four short years, Tekno Autosports has gone from a rookie race team to a front-running force in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. The popular team first stepped into the series in 2011, but its roots run deep into the early 2000’s grassroots motorsport scene. Like Doric and Cowdroy, at the heart of Tekno are its personnel. The squad has formed one of the tightest, most effective and inspirational organisations in the industry thanks to a constant drive. The team is made up of industry leading engineers and mechanics whose combined skills are driving the team to the top ranks of the sport. Together Doric , Cowdroy and Tekno continue to climb the ladder of success by driving innovation and striving towards a bigger and better future. That’s why, when long term Doric Ambassador and Supercar star Will Davison made the switch to Tekno in 2016, it made perfect sense for Doric and Cowdroy to follow. The exciting new partnership has seen the #19 Tekno Holden Commodore race throughout six different states and one territory so far this year sporting both Doric and Cowdroy branding. For the team’s new star, Will Davison, the move has paid dividends over and over again, with the driver claiming two race wins, two podium places and eight more top ten finishes so far this year. The experienced racer is a perfect fit with the exciting and innovative team, having amassed 19 wins and 53 podium finishes over his illustrious Supercar career. Davison wasted no time getting up to speed in 2016, racking up his first win with the new squad just two rounds into the season. The win at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway cemented confidence in both the driver and team for their first season together. That confidence played a pivotal part in the team’s first Bathurst 1000 win last month. And now, with just three rounds remaining in the 2016 season and sitting comfortably in fourth place in the standings, Davison has his eyes set firmly on the finish line.

RED DOT DESIGN AWARD Alchin Long Group is proud to announce that our very own Katherine Kawecki, an Industrial Designer working in the Research & Development team, won the prestigious Red Dot Design Award 2016 for her Respia Asthma Management System. As an asthmatic herself, Kat was inspired to create the system after research showed her how little was being done for asthma management, even when as many as 1 in 10 people suffer from it. Kat recently came home from Singapore after attending the red carpet award ceremony where she was the only Australian award winner at the event. Go Kat!

IL: First off, congratulations on your Red Dot Award! What was it that inspired you to create your product - the Respia Asthma Management System? K: Thank you so much. There were many reasons that inspired me to design Respia. I conducted market research which showed how little had been designed for asthma management when as many as 1 in 10 people suffer from asthma. Respia can also be used for managing COPD and other chronic respiratory conditions. I also interviewed many asthmatics and respiratory specialists who saw great value in redesigning the aerosol inhaler. I wanted to create a complete experience that was empowering and informative to

the user whilst keeping ease of use at the forefront. I also wanted to change people’s perception of asthma to allow the user to comfortably medicate in public without feeling like their inhaler is a sign of illness. I feel that Respia addresses many of the challenges asthmatics face everyday. IL: Can you explain what it is about your product that sets it apart from other asthma management devices? K: Respia is truly the first asthma management system that is designed to engage the user with their condition. Respia is an asthma management system that tracks and records the user’s respiratory health and medication use. It is the

complete redesign of existing aerosol inhalers which hadn’t been changed for decades coupled with a world first wearable patch that tracks respiratory health. The system consists of a bluetooth enabled smart inhaler, wearable device and docking station that communicate wirelessly with the Respia phone app. IL: How did it feel when you found out that you had won an award? K: When I was notified that Respia had won a Red Dot I did not fully realize what had happened until a little while later that morning. I was ecstatic and it is a great feat for me that good asthma management is being praised.

IL: What was the award ceremony in Singapore like? K: The award ceremony was a red carpet event and run a little bit like a fashion show because all the award winners had to walk down a long elevated aisle to receive the award. It was really fun and I met a lot of really interesting people from all over the world with great ideas. It was great to see the designers of winning concepts from so many different countries converge for this event. I was the only Australian award winner at the event which surprised me, nevertheless I was honoured to represent Australian innovation and women in design. I encourage Australian designers and companies to submit their innovative concepts into this international design competition! IL: Wow, you were the only Australian award winner at the event? Were there any other award winners that really caught your attention? K: It was really exciting when the Luminary award was announced. The Luminary award goes to the best concept out of the whole competition and can come from any category. This year it was the Google Self Driving Car designed by Yoojung Ahn and her team from the United States. It’s a great idea which could revolutionise the ‘private transport’ experience. Yoojung is an inspirational woman in design. IL: So what are the next steps for Respia? K: Respia has received a lot of enthusiasm from people with asthma and with asthmatic family members. Respia has been praised by many industry and medical professionals and notable designers who would like to see the concept become a reality. I would like to see Respia lower the number of avoidable deaths and reduce asthma suffering by creating easier asthma management. So far, Respia has not received any funding as it is still in its early stages. Funding and support is the next step for Respia. The global asthma

treatment market is predicted to grow to $21.7 US billion by 2020 and the time is now for better asthma management solutions. IL: What would be your top 3 tips to any designers who want to enter the Red Dot Design Awards next year? K: Have an interactive, multi-medium design process. Ideation, sketching, hands on model making and repeat! There is infinite learning to be had from hands on foam modeling and 3d printing iterations. Repeat this process at least seven times and allow yourself to explore radically different designs. Consider the feedback you receive from your mentors and the people you are designing for and accommodate for it. Also accept that not every suggestion is necessarily a good design solution. Become an expert on the subject you are designing for. Thirdly, I emphasise that you have an excellent presentation of your concept. You should spend a considerable amount of time photographing your product in real life with real people using it. Make sure your picture explains how the product is used and in what context. Make it clear as day and show your presentation to someone who doesn’t know your project and see if they are able to deduce the purpose and potential of your product. It is very important to persevere through all the challenges you may face in designing a product. Go the extra mile and don’t lose sight of the problem you are designing for. Make sure you have fun! Be engaged and love what you are designing. And have trust in your ability.

CHARITY

PARTNERSHIP

THE ALCHIN LONG GROUP IS THE OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF AUSTRALIAN YOUTH SAFETY PROGRAM, NO SECOND CHANCE

1) PALMERSTON N2C is a revolutionary Youth Safety Campaign which focuses on saving teenage lives by educating Australia’s young men and women on the dangers of street violence and the realities of road carnage. On June 17th N2C visited Palmerston Senior College in Darwin to present to 120 students. “It made myself and everyone else think about the dangers on the road and how it can impact others. Other schools need the knowledge as well.” - Allison Weber

2) SOUTHPORT On August 5, N2C presented to over 120 year 12 students at The Southport School on the Gold Coast. ”I think the whole presentation was really good, because it demonstrated how good and bad decisions can impact my life. It made me realise that there really are no second chances when it comes to making decisions.” - Nick Potter

3) CLEVELAND In the lead up to the Supercar weekend in Townsville, the N2C team visited the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre for the third consecutive year. The team spoke to around 40 14-17 year-olds at the centre. “Despite their challenging back grounds, the messages of Paul, Matt & Warren certainly got through as there was complete silence from the crowd throughout the whole presentation and at the end, most of the kids shook our hands and thanked us for speaking to them.” - Andy McElrea, Director

DEVELOPING A

SMARTER WINDOW SYSTEM DORIC’S DN8000 LOCKING SYSTEM HAS TAKEN OUT THE TITLE FOR DISRUPTING DORIC’S APPROACH MOST INNOVATIVE COMPONENT AT DESIGN THE AWA AUSFENEX AWARDS

The term “disruptive” would typically bring to mind thoughts of technology based start-ups situated in Silicon Valley, or the likes of Airbnb and Uber who dramatically displaced the established market leaders by founding a new value network. It would be less likely to think of a traditional industry such as the door and window industry. Founded in 1972, Doric is the largest privately owned hardware manufacturer in Australia and has a long history of providing innovative door and window hardware for residential, commercial and architectural applications. In order to explore new markets and move away from the traditional waterfall development approach we explored new ways to create our hardware. One of these ways was an approach called design thinking. At the heart of the design thinking methodology is a human centred design approach which enables holistic product development. Design thinking provides tools that generates customer understanding but also challenges managerial mindsets and processes. Doric’s DN8000 multipoint system was the first project undertaken with this new design methodology. Before bringing the Euro groove multipoint technology to Australia we wanted to have a complete understanding of the Australian market in order to identifying all stakeholder issues. These systems create the next level of energy efficient homes, however research was needed to validate and explore what features were needed to make the product a success. Mechanical design engineer and project team leader, Aritesh Nand, conducted research in four countries in order to identify opportunities to improve the product at each stage of the product lifecycle. Continued discussion and input was received from installers, service teams, end users and building supervisors. The collation of this information gave us a strong understanding of what challenges all stakeholders faced and what product features really mattered to them. The team of industrial designers, mechanical and electrical engineers in Doric’s RnD department explored a broad range of concepts and rapidly tested them through state of the art 3D prints and prototypes. Through our research, the design thinking process created informed insights which allowed effective ideas to come to light. An example of this was through witnessing the current methods of installation and adjustment. “We observed service teams hanging out of windows on high rise buildings trying to reach adjustment screws, we just knew there had to be a better way,” says Aritesh. All installation procedures of our product were improved and simplified allowing the product to be significantly faster and safer to install. Our adjustment blocks allow the service teams to adjust the product from within the building and all individual components were designed to fuse together which removed the need for accurate cutting lengths.

While awning windows can withstand extremely high wind loads when closed, they are vulnerable to high wind loads in the open position. This issue was the greatest challenge our team faced with the project. When occupants leave their windows open for venting while away from the building two safety issues can occur. Firstly, these open windows can flutter in high-wind situations causing them to dislodge and fall from the building. The second issue occurs when windows are left open and the internal walls become exposed to extremely high positive and negative wind loads. These internal partitions are generally rated to lower wind pressures and therefore when exposed to these external pressures, can become structurally damaged or collapse. To overcome these issues in some instances, building supervisors are being asked to enter all apartments or offices and check the windows are shut on days where there is high wind. This relies on the building manager being aware of the weather conditions and also putting the occupants through the discomfort of having someone enter their apartments at all hours of the day and night. “At first we thought this might need to be solved with a completely separate solution, however the challenge was to integrate a solution into our multipoint system,” says Aritesh. This proved to be a huge task for the design team and one that delayed the launch of the product significantly. However the solution that was developed justified the effort. The DN8000 self-latching multi-point locking system uses specially designed awning stays which release the window under high wind loads. Once the window is released, it falls under its own weight and is caught by the self-latching devices which holds the window shut, the handle is then operated to release the window. While greater challenges were uncovered through the design thinking framework and deep level of research, by having the desire to discover and take these issues resulted in a unique product. After five years of product development and subsequent launch, the DN8000 recently won the ‘Most Innovative Component’ award at the AusFenEx 2016 Conference, taking home the title for Doric and parent company Alchin Long Group. “We’re so proud of this product and it’s great to see the whole team recognised for the countless hours of hard work that went into turning this idea into reality,” said Alchin Long Group CEO, Nigel Long. “Innovation is what drives our industry. Our capacity to think outside the box to solve complex issues is what dictates our success as a business and it helps influence the direction of our industry. It’s very exciting to be a part of this process and I’m excited to see how we will change the market next.” In addition to receiving the industry title of most innovative component this product has already been noticed and specified in new developments. These achievements validates this new methodology for us and has pathed the way into new markets. While Doric may not be creating disruptive products at the same level as Uber just yet, taking the first step of disrupting our design process has proven to deliver positive results which will see further development in this area.

“Innovation is what drives our industry. Our capacity to think outside the box to solve complex issues is what dictates our success as a business and it helps influence the direction of our industry. - Alchin Long Group CEO, Nigel Long.

WILL DAVISON W

ILL DAVISON is on top of the world. After making the big move to front-running V8 Supercar team Tekno Autosports at the beginning of the year, Will has hit the ground running. The 33-year-old has racked up 13 top ten finishes throughout the year so far. A breakthrough win at just the second round of the season in Tasmania was a huge confidence boost for the entire Tekno team, but it was just the beginning. The win was Davison’s first since the Perth round in 2015 and was a big leg up as the Championship shifted into gear.

ONE The extra confidence was key heading into the enduro season. A podium result at the Sandown 500 alongside Jonothan Webb was proof the Tekno squad was on the right track. So it was little surprise when the #9 Holden Commodore was fighting for the lead in the closing laps of the Bathurst 1000 earlier this month. With his fuel running low, the pressure was on for Davison, but he managed to hold off a charging Shane Van Gisbergen in the final laps of the epic endurance race to win by just 0.1434 seconds - one of the closest

Even so, the engine coughed (from low fuel) as I crossed the finish line. “I have dreamed of winning this race again since 2009. It’s amazing. The Championship is important but Bathurst is something else, I am stoked.”
