WELCOME W

ELCOME TO the latest edition of Inside Line for the 2017 Gold Coast 600. Continuing on from a very successful 2016 season, the Doric and Cowdroy Supercar Racing programs continue again this year with front-running Supercar outfit Tekno Autosports. We’re very proud of our committment to our motorsport program. After introducing ALG sister company Cowdroy to our motorsport program two years ago, we’ll again see significant Cowdroy branding on the outer livery of the #19 Holden Supercar throught the 2017 season. Doric branding will also feature on the inside of the racer and will be seen right around the world via the series’ extensive television coverage. We are also pleased to be able to continue our long relationship with Supercar driver Will Davison, who will be behind the wheel at Tekno this year. It’s great to have Will on board once again as our Doric brand ambassador for the seventh consecutive year. He is such a big part of our racing family and we’re proud to stand beside him as he continues to push to new heights on the race track. We are also continuing our support of our longest running ambassador; motorsport legend John Bowe. We have

supported JB in the Touring Car Masters series for many years and it will be thrilling to watch him strive to back up his 2016 series win. JB is entertaining, engaging and a legend who continues to deliver value for the Doric business. ALG is proud of our various associations in motorsport, with the 2017 season marking Doric’s 13th year delivering money can’t buy experiences for our valued clients and staff. Our sponsorships have taken our brand exposure to a new level and helped raise the professionalism and image of both Doric and Cowdroy. Motorsport is competitive, exciting, passionate and innovative. The team here at Doric and Cowdroy stand for all the same great values.

We hope you enjoy the Gold Coast event with Doric and Cowdroy and follow our racing adventures throughout the rest of the 2017 racing season. NIGEL LONG Group CEO, ALG

FLYING

HIGH DORIC AND COWDROY ARE AIMING FOR THE TOP IN 2017 WITH ONE OF SUPERCARS BRIGHTEST STARS

D

ORIC AND Cowdroy are back in 2017 with a new brand marketing and customer activation program. Central to the 2017 program is the continuation of the exciting partnership with front-running Supercar outfit Tekno Autosports, supporting its racing ventures throughout Australia and New Zealand.. Parent company Alchin Long Group (ALG) will be building upon many years of loyal commitment to Doric Ambassador Will Davison, joining the star driver in his role with Tekno Autosports. Doric branding will feature throughout the inside and outside of the #19 Holden Supercar and be seen widely via the series’ extensive Australia-wide television coverage. Cowdroy branding will also feature on the outer livery of the Tekno entry during the 2017 Championship season. Doric is excited to continue its long-standing relationship with racing star Will Davison in 2017, with the driver continuing his role as Brand Ambassador for the 7th consecutive year. John Bowe will also continue into his 10th year as a Doric Ambassador contesting the Touring Car Masters series and is looking to back up his 2016 series win in his all-Aussie Holden SLR5000 Torana. While door and window hardware manufacturing and racing high-speed Supercars may appear to have little in common, Tekno Autosports, Doric and Cowdroy are proving they’re truly a match made in heaven.

In just four short years, Tekno Autosports has gone from a rookie race team to a front-running force in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. The popular team first stepped into the series in 2011, but its roots run deep into the early 2000’s grassroots motorsport scene. Like Doric and Cowdroy, at the heart of Tekno are its personnel. The squad has formed one of the tightest, most effective and inspirational organisations in the industry thanks to a constant drive and a rich winning culture. The team is made up of industry leading engineers and mechanics whose combined skills are driving the team to the top ranks of the sport. Together Doric, Cowdroy and Tekno continue to climb the ladder of success by driving innovation and striving towards a bigger and better future. That’s why, when long term Doric Ambassador and Supercar star Will Davison made the switch to Tekno last year, it made perfect sense for Doric and Cowdroy to follow. The exciting partnership has seen the #19 Tekno Holden Commodore race throughout Australia and New Zealand sporting both Doric and Cowdroy branding. For the team’s star, Will Davison, the move has paid dividends over and over again, with the driver claiming a number of race wins, including the biggest of them all; the Bathurst 1000. The experienced racer is a perfect fit with the exciting and innovative team, having amassed 18 wins and 52 podium finishes over his illustrious Supercar career. After a fantastic year on track in 2016, Davison has his eyes set firmly on the finish line this year.

ALG NEWS DORIC DN8000 WINS DESIGN AWARD

L

eading Australian hardware manufacturer, Doric has received a 2017 Good Design Selection in the Product Design category at the Good Design Awards. After an extensive evaluation process involving more than 35 Australian and international design experts, the selection jury awarded Doric’s DN8000 High Performance Self Latching Multi-Point System a Good Design Selection. Of the 244 entries to receive the 2017 Good Design Selection, the DN8000 was one of only 18 selected in the Product Design category. The Good Design Awards celebrate the very best in design, innovation and creativity and are Australia’s longest standing and most prestigious design awards dating back to 1958. The innovative product won the judges’ favour across a range of criteria, with the jury commenting: “Very innovative product that is a joy to use. The jury commends the designers for developing an innovative product that solves a real problem in an elegant and clever way. Well done.” This is the second major award for the DN8000, with the product taking out the title for Most Innovative Component at the 2016 AWA AusFenEx awards. “Our company purpose is to create innovative solutions through a culture of empowerment so I am extremely proud of the team for identifying an opportunity in the industry and innovating this solution,” said Alchin Long Group CEO, Nigel Long. “The team is constantly working to develop new products. Innovation through design is what dictates our success as a business and the DN8000 epitomises our work as an industry leader. “It’s wonderful to see the whole team recognised again for their hard work on this product.” The DN8000 is the first locking system to be designed around the requirements of the Australian market and the world’s first product to automatically close and latch under potentially damaging wind loads. The innovative product addresses a need for a multi-point locking system that is both corrosion resistant, and also able to maintain extremely high performance by self-closing and protecting a building in high wind situations.

CHARITY PARTNERSHIP UPDATE N2C at The Southport School, Gold Coast : Friday 4th August. N2C first presented at The Southport School in July 2013. After the presentation, Mike Wallace, the Year 11 and 12 Leadership Program Coordinator asked the team to “please come back every year for the next ten years”. The August presentation was fifth visit to the famed school. Founded in 1901, TSS is an Anglican day and boarding school on the Gold Coast for boys from Prep Year to Year 12 with boarding available from Year 5. By way of update regarding the next phase and growth of the N2C program, in an effort to reach millions, rather than thousands of teens, the team has a world-wide provisional patent on the technology and method for a speed related mobile phone ‘App’ which when installed on their mobile phone, will stop kids being able to text (or use any other App) while they are driving. This has been over two years in making and N2C now have the architecture of the code and the support of the likes of Mark Webber and John Borghetti of Virgin Australia. In fact John Borghetti has facilitated an upcoming meeting between N2C and Paul O’Sullivan the chairman of Optus, being an important next step to make this life saving technology a reality. N2C at The Kings School, Parramatta : Thursday 17th August. N2C presented to over 200 year 12 students in the team’s third visit to Kings in August. N2C’s visits there are particularly poignant considering 2012 one punch victim Thomas Kelly was a Kings student and last year’s suicide of his younger brother Stuart, also a Kings old boy. As usual, the messages of Matt, Paul and Warren had significant cut through to the group. A great example is this quote from Cullen Davey: “I would recommend this to other schools because it’s one thing to hear it from the government, it’s another thing to hear it from a real life victim that has gone through the trauma of something so horrific.” It is also rewarding that often students stay around after the presentations to talk directly to our presenters, to offer support or their gratitude to have had the opportunity to hear these stories.

BOWE INDUCTED TO LEGENDS LANE

D

oric Ambassador John Bowe has been honoured as an inaugural inductee into Bathurst’s new Legends Lane. The permanent tribute, to be located at the Mount Panorama circuit, has been created by Supercars and the Bathurst Regional Council. Bowe was one of ten inaugural inductees including Allan Moffat, Colin Bond, Dick Johnson, Jim Richards, Fred Gibson, Bob Morris, John Harvey, Kevin Bartlett, Allan Grice, John Goss, Larry Perkins and the late Peter Brock. Legends Lane was created to recognise the drivers that set the foundations for the current Supercars category. “It was quite an honour for me and in the parade lap I got to drive the last Sierra Cosworth built by DJR and owned by Terry Lawler,” said Bowe. “It was an honour to be up there with those guys who in some cases were childhood heroes of mine.”

MCELREA DOMINATES QUALIFYING AND GRABS SOLID POINTS AT SMP

G

old Coast based kiwi; Hunter McElrea, continued to prove he is one of the up and coming drivers to watch this weekend, at round 5 of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park. After a clean run through Friday practice, Hunter felt confident going into qualifying. This proved to be true as Hunter took Pole Position by a dominant 0.4 of a second ahead of the 30 other Formula Fords, becoming the only driver to score multiple pole positions all season. “Qualifying was really cool, I always love going out on new tires and just nailing the lap. The car was phenomenal and I even set my pole lap on my first flying lap with a pass! I am really looking forward to the races and hopefully I can just put my head down and drive away” McElrea said. In the opening race McElrea lead the opening 8 laps, only to be passed under yellow flags. After a pre-race investigation, due to “Insufficient evidence” justice was unfortunately not in McElrea’s favour. Race 2 saw McElrea drop to 3rd on the opening lap, before having to avoid a spinning car ahead of him. This meant he spent the race chasing down the leader, which he could do. Unfortunately, the 17 year old ran out of laps and once again had to settle for 2nd. Race 3 was unfortunately a non – event, with only half a lap of racing meant the whole race was spent under safety car, and ultimately another 2nd place finish for Hunter. “Overall it was a solid weekend, the highlight was definitely qualifying and I am very happy to have performed like I did, however I am quite disappointed with 2nd Place this weekend, particularly with the some of the official’s judgements in race 1. I now head into the last round of the series being one of the four drivers who can win the Championship, and I will definitely be bringing 100%. I would really like to thank all my supportive sponsors, everyone at team Sonic, especially; Mick, Maria, and my mechanic Stevo” said McElrea.

FAST FACTS 1

This year is the 26th running of the Gold Coast street event, which debuted as an IndyCar race back in 1991. Indycars continued to compete in Queensland through to 2008, when Supercars took over as headline.

2

The last time a Supercars race ran without a Safety Car period at the infamous Gold Coast street circuit was back in 2007.

3

The closest margin for pole position at the Gold Coast Supercars event came in 2011 when Jamie Whincup took pole over Garth Tander by just 0.0015s.

4

The last six races held on the Gold Coast were won by Holden Commodores.

5

Garth Tander and Jamie Whincup are tied for the most race wins at the Gold Coast with seven each.

6

Holden has won 53% of the Supercars races held at the Gold Coast since the first event in 1994.

7

The Gold Coast is the last of three endurance races that make up the Pirtek Endurance Cup within the Superars Championship.

8

The Supercars steering wheel takes approximately 15-20kg to rotate, and G-Forces acting on the head and neck of the drivers are equivalent to 15-20kg of weight being applied.

6 THINGS TO WATCH AT THE GOLD COAST WITH JOHN BOWE 2017 saw some big changes in the Supercars field. From driver movements, to manufacturer swaps and new tyres, this season has thrown up plenty of surprises. No one knows more about this than Australian Touring Car legend and Doric Ambassador John Bowe. The legendary racer won the first ever race at the Gold Coast and over his years in the sport, Bowe has seen it all. So there is no one better qualified to give us the run down on the things to watch this weekend on track.

KERB CONTROVERSY “To go fast at the Gold Coast, drivers have got to take absolute liberty with kerbs and every year it’s a controversy. It’s like playing Russian Roulette, because it depends how far the officials will let you push it. All the cars these days have set up that loves the kerbs, so it’s up to the drivers how far they will go to push the limits.”

CO-DRIVER PRESSURE “As the last round of the Enduro Cup, co-drivers have a big role to play at the Gold Coast. There is no room for error because it’s a street circuit, so the pressure is on. If you make a mistake, you pay the price, so their performance will be paramount.”

BREAKING POINT “A number of teams are concerned about brakes heading into the Gold Coast. A recent material change to the category brakes is not what teams thought it would be and its keeping them on their toes. They have a big stop from 260km/h at Turn One and then a short run to Turn Two at the Gold Coast which doesn’t leave much time for brakes to recover. This is a great spot to watch for passing opportunities.”

DJR FORM “I’ve got a soft spot for DJR because of our past, but there’s no denying they are the ones to beat at the moment. I was disappointed for McLaughlin at Bathurst. He is top bloke and driver. It didn’t roll their way, but they are the form team and I expect them to be on top again.”

CHAMPIONSHIP “We’re closing in on later stages of the Championship. Fabian Coulthard has snuck ahead by consistency, but there’s still plenty of points to be had. There will be more and more focus on points over the next few rounds and it will be interesting to see how that plays out.”

CARNAGE “The Gold Coast street circuit is a really tough track given its proximity to the fence. It’s totally unforgiving. That is good in some ways, just not so good if you’re a team owner with crashed cars. But it really sorts the men from the boys. They are all good drivers but they can all make mistakes, on this circuit more than almost any other.”
