WELCOME WELCOME TO our new look magazine! We’ve changed the way we share all the latest news about our Doric and Cowdroy Racing programs and redesigned our magazine. Bolder and better than ever before, we hope you enjoy all The Inside Line has to offer. I would also like to officially welcome you to our Doric/Cowdroy corporate suite for what should be a spectacular weekend of racing at Sydney Olympic Park. We’re very proud of two exciting changes to our 2015 program. Firstly, introducing ALG sister company Cowdroy, joining Doric in our 2015 program and secondly, our new partnership with Erebus Motorsport. It’s great to have Will Davison on board once again as our Doric brand ambassador, especially as he continues his role at Erebus Motorsport, behind the wheel of the Mercedes V8 Supercar. Our racing family has had a great year on track and we’ll be right there beside them as the excitement continues throughout the final round of the season. Doric is proud of our various associations in motorsport and it’s been very exciting to introduce Cowdroy to the program, with the 2015 season marking Doric’s eleventh straight year delivering money can’t buy experiences for our valued clients and staff. Our sponsorships have taken our brand exposure to a new level & helped raise

the professionalism and image of the Doric brand and we hope to continue this exposure for the Cowdroy brand. Drivers Will Davison and John Bowe are great ambassadors and we are proud to be associated with such a professional team. We have received some fantastic coverage this year from the Doric logos splashed across the #9 Erebus Mercedes Benz and on Will’s racing suit and helmet. Cowdroy has also had some great coverage with branding on Ash Walsh’s #4 racer. Our association with Erebus also extends to their GT program, which has taken the us to a whole new market. We are also continuing our support of our longest running ambassador; motorsport legend John Bowe. We have supported JB in his current venture in the Touring Car Masters series for many years and we were proud to stand alongside him as he clocked his 1000th

race earlier this year. JB is entertaining, engaging and a legend who continues to deliver value for the Doric business. Motorsport is competitive, exciting, passionate and innovative. We at Doric and Cowdroy stand for all those values. We hope you enjoy your day at the Sydney 500 with Doric and Cowdroy; it is a pleasure to host you in our private suite. NIGEL LONG Group CEO, ALG

JB’S THOUSAND DORIC AMBASSADOR John Bowe clocked his 1000th race start at the Muscle Car Masters in September. The racing veteran’s Holden Torana sported a special livery in celebration of the career milestone. “When I started the year I wasn’t aware I was going to hit the 1000 races milestone,” said Bowe. “I know it’s just a number but when I found out about it I actually felt quite weary, because that’s a lot of races,” he laughs. “That’s a lot of butterflies that have passed through my stomach over the years. And I still get nervous like I did when I first started out racing.” Despite the butterflies, the 61-yearold continues to prove a winning force in the Touring Car Masters series, in a career that has spanned over four

decades in both Australia and overseas. Bowe took his fourth Touring Car Masters title last month at Phillip Island in yet another dominant display on-track. “According to the database I’ve done more races than anyone in Australia. “It was great that it happened at Muscle Car Masters because I got to share it with some amazing people. “But I don’t do it for the championships or trophies. My dad always told me not to get a big head. I do it because I love it. I love driving the car and making it better. I just want to do my best and work with great people.” Bowe says while the impressive milestone wasn’t something that he was actively aiming towards, it provided a great oppotunity for him to relfect on his long and illustrious career. “I don’t often look back, but hitting

that milestone made me reflect on the people who have helped me over the years like all the drivers who have taught me various things, engineers who have worked on my race cars and sponsors who have allowed me to do what I love for so long. They have all helped me become who I am today. “Part of that family is my friends from Doric who have been very good to me for eight years now. They supported me when I made the move into the TCM series at the end of 2007 and hold a very special place in my heart. “I suffered with depression around that time and because of friends like Doric, I was able to pull myself out of that and get back to doing what I love. They are more than just a sponsor to me and I look forward to many more years of friendship”

DORIC AND COWDROY

THERE WAS something for everyone at the latest ALG Trade Night in Melbourne on Friday, 9th of September. The event took place at the Ultima Function Centre in Keilor Park and showcased products from all five brands under the Alchin Long Group umbrella. Customers from all over the city flocked to see the latest products from ALG, get a heads up on the company’s biggest news and get to know its fastpaced and fearless racing ambassadors. Australian motor racing presenter and commentator Greg Rust hosted the event, while Doric and Cowdroy Racing ambassadors Will Davison and Ash Walsh were also on hand to talk about their high-speed life in the V8 Supercar Championship. Audience Q&As with the racers revealed the highly physical side of racing, with the drivers describing the challenge of driving a race car in hot weather over long distances and the toll it takes on both their physical and mental state. Many customers brought their families along to the Melbourne event to enjoy the proceedings, while ALG Marketing Manager David Scoones also spoke about the brand’s background and incredible business growth over

the decades thanks to the support of its most loyal customers. “Our trade nights are a great opportunity for us to get to know our clients on a more personal level,” said David Scoones. “It’s also a great chance for our clients to see our latest products and learn about our racing endevours. “We love to share our passion for racing with our closest clients.” ALG showcase nights will be scheduled in all states around Australia in 2016 so stay tuned for an invitation to a special event coming to you soon.

THE UNSUNG M

otorsport is glamorous business. With multi-million dollar contracts and champagne splashed across television screen each weekend, the high-speed lifestyle of V8 Supercars is the envy of many. But like many different industries, it’s the people behind the scenes that are putting in the hard yards to make the biggest difference. Behind the scenes at Erebus Motorsport, away from the limelight of the V8 Supercars spectacle, a team of dedicated mechanics play an integral part in making everything run smoothly. “I was Number Two mechanic at SBR

and worked at a few other teams and I’ve been in motorsport my entire life. My dad’s a mechanic and I was racing when I was a kid as well. So I knew what I was in for,” says Chris Seidel, lead mechanic on Will Davison’s #9 Mercedes Benz. Seidel has held his role at Erebus for two years, looking after day-to-day preparations and setting the car up for race meetings. While the title of mechanic comes with certain expectations, Seidel’s job encompasses much more than you might imagine. “We liaise with an engineer about

what set up we put in the car, what they want to run in each session. We also liaise with the paint and panel shop, sub assembly, fabrication and machine shop for anything we need on the car. “Essentially we are the main department. We have to liaise with all the other departments to bring it all together to build the car. So there’s quite a bit of time and personnel management; talking to different groups of people and working with everyone.” The scope of Seidel’s role also means he needs to liase with both Will Davison and his engineers to problem solve.

While requests from the engineers are usually in black in white, communicating with a driver about issues is somewhat more complicated. “You really need to engage in the interpretation of things when there’s an issue or fault with the car. If it doesn’t feel right through a specific corner or it has a bit of a shudder in a brake pedal, then you have to interpret what the driver is telling you, look at the car and see what is happening and try to work it out. “If its anything to do with driver

every department. “I have to delegate to my number two as well. We have to work out what he’s going to do, what I’m going to do and if we’re going to need extra help from someone else. If everything goes wrong on track then there’s a lot of delegating. But while the spotlight shines brightly on Davison at the racetrack, Seidel says working behind the scenes suits him just fine. “We receive zero limelight. None of

“Everyone does it because they love motor racing, more so than the limelight and the attention” comfort, Will will come straight to us and we’ll work with him to try to fix it.” Seidel says the biggest thing he’s learned in his role is the interpersonal aspect. “The communication side of it would be the biggest thing I’ve learned. Dealing with different types of people about different aspects and trying to gel it all together is really challenging. That level of communication is vital in this role, given you need to work with

the attention is on us. And that doesn’t really bother me to be honest. I don’t like the attention and I think most of the guys are like that. Everyone does it because they love motor racing, more so than the limelight and the attention. “When things turn out well, the recognition from the team is all we need. When things are going good, everyone is happy and they’ll walk over, shake your hand and say, ‘good job’. That’s all we need.”

NEWS

WINDOW HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS URGE INCREASED SAFETY MEASURES WITH AN increasing number of children being injured in falls from windows and balconies each year, window hardware manufacturers are urging home owners and builders to step up their efforts to curb the tragic accidents. The Alchin Long Group, which owns Australia’s largest privately owned hardware manufacturer Doric Products, as well as testing and engineering business Azuma Design, has called for improved safety standards for residential windows right across Australia. “We were saddened to hear the news of another tragic accident, where two boys were hospitalised after a fall from a second-storey window in Sydney,” said Alchin Long Group Marketing Manager, David Scoones. “This is a topic we are very passionate about at ALG and we’ve done our best to give builders and home owners the tools to make sure their homes are safe for children.”

Each year around 50 children fall from windows and balconies, resulting in many serious injuries and even death. While the building code of Australia (BCA) sets strict rules around window openings and balustrades, there are no laws that require openings in older buildings to meet current building standards. However there are ways to improve safety. Doric Products and Azuma Design, have joined the Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s Kids Don’t Fly campaign, developing specialty hardware to help stop these accidents from occurring. Azuma has also developed specialised equipment for installers to test window specifications. The company, which offers a wide range of Industrial Design, Engineering, Testing and Marketing services, has developed a self-certification kit for window compliance for children’s safety. The kit allows businesses to self-

certify windows on site to ensure their products are suitable to be used within the requirements of the Building Code of Australia. Accident information obtained by Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW ), found that in the majority of cases both the actions of the child or parent, in conjunction with specific building components, contributed to these incidents. In particular, placing furniture near a window that isn’t fitted with a latching or locking safety device, was identified as a significant child safety issue. While the placement of furniture and supervision is left up to parents, the strata community and architects can do their bit to slow these occurrences and potentially save lives. Incorporating simple, but effective products, like the Doric DS255 Sliding WindowLimiter, in combination with testing using the Azuma Design kit, is an effective solution to this problem.

WILL DAVISON

V8 SUPERCARS WILL DAVISON is looking to finish the 2015 season on a high at Sydney. It’s been a whirlwind year for Will, taking his first win with Erebus Motorsport early in the season at Perth, WA. Will has since drawn out plenty of

promise from the #9 E63 AMG Mercedes throughout the season. Despite his fair share of on-track dramas, Will has accrued nine top ten finishes in 2015. “There’s been a lot of potential all

throughout the season for Erebus. There are a lot of great things about this team and it’s so inspiring to see how hard everyone works. It’s a great environment to be in. Unfortunately it’s just frustrating that we haven’t been able to capitalise on more of that promise because at some of the bigger events we’ve really deserved it. “But I’m more motivated than ever to finish the year on a high at Sydney.”

COWDROY RACING

IN 2015

JOHN BOWE JOHN BOWE topped off another stellar season in the Touring Car Masters Series last month holding the 2015 championship trophy. The Australian racing legend took his win tally for the year to 11 with two wins at the final round at Phillip Island and edged out his competitors for the title. The win comes despite missing a round earlier in the year and swapping cars mid-way through the season. “I started the year with Mustang Sally and it’s a great car and it’s the most

successful car in TCM history so I was happy to continue driving it, but another opportunity came up that I just couldn’t turn down,” said Bowe. “I got an offer to drive a new SLR 5000 Torana and I thought it would be a great challenge. It was originally just a one-race deal, but it was such a great little car, we ended up sticking with it for the rest of the season. “As a young man I always loved Holden Toranas and dreamed of owning an SLR 5000, so I just couldn’t turn down

the chance to race one this year. “It wasn’t the most powerful car, but it was so nimble and great to drive. “The championship came down to the last race meeting and it was a real battle, which was great for the fans. “I certainly didn’t expect to win. It’s a credit to the people who prep the car. “It’s been a busy year but I figure I’ll do it as long as I can. It keeps me young. I’ve set a goal that when I turn 80, I want to be on the grid somewhere. “Driving, not as a grid girl,” he laughs.

DS1297 LIFT TO LOCK

Doric’s DS1297 Lift to Lock multi point mortice lock is designed for aluminium hinged door applications. The lever is lifted upward to throw the side projection bolt and the vertical locking rods. Additional functionality can be added to the lockset by the fitting of Doric Furniture with snib, which then provides a “day latching function” - the ability to secure the lock from outside, without key locking, therefore providing safety when the building is occupied. It is designed to provide 4 point locking when a shoot bolt rod kit is added. Installation and field serviceability has been enhanced with a “Pull and Twist” reversible bevelled latch bolt and the ability to remove the lock body while the rod connectors slide out from the actuators.
