CALTEX ALL STARS CONFERENCE 2017 epay’s National Account Manager Ranjan Sahni attended this conference held at the Hilton Tokyo in March this year, which also featured convenience heavyweights such as Coca-Cola Amatil, Frucor, Nestle, Optus and Vodafone. This issue we take a look at the Australian Telco industry and create a snapshot of how we use our mobile phones in terms of data usage, where we recharge and more.
A SNAPSHOT OF MOBILE AUSTRALIANS PREPAID VS POSTPAID Even though the total number of Prepaid customers in Australia has fallen its market share has been relatively consistent throughout the period. According to data from Kantar Worldpanel, there has been a slow migration from contract to prepaid plans across all service providers, with the result that the proportion of mobile subscribers on contract plans fell from 59% at the end of 2014 to 54% at the end of 2015. USING TWO MOBILE PHONES More than a million Australians (6 percent) use two mobile phones and over a half of these have one for work and one for play with each connected through a different service provider. Most have both phones on a Postpaid plan (58 percent), while around one in four use one Postpaid and one Prepaid phone (27 percent) and the rest manage the recharges on two Prepaid mobiles (15 percent).

The Prepaid market now offers great deals to capture these customers and it continues to hold its own against Postpaid options. And once they are a Prepaid customer, they prefer to recharge in a store like yours!

MOBILE-ONLY PHONE USER GROWTH OF THE MOBILE-ONLY PHONE USER Almost six million adult Australians (30 percent) use a mobile phone and do not have a fixed-line telephone service in the home – and this number has been steadily growing. Of these, 54 percent of those aged 25–34 and 46 percent of those aged 18–24 were mobile-only phone users. As with exclusively mobile users, those aged 65 and over were least likely to be mobile-only phone users (nine percent).
DATA DOWNLOADS Data is downloaded in ever increasing amounts in Australia and the volume done via a mobile handset increased by 69 percent between the June 2015 and June 2016 quarters.
TEENS LOVE PREPAID Nine in 10 Aussie teens now have a mobile and most are already on to their second handset. The vast majority (65 percent) are using prepaid and 35 percent are on a postpaid plan – which is a major turnaround from the ratio in the general population.

odafone now offers its $40 and above combo Prepaid customers an extra week to use their data and calls by changing the validity from 28 days to 35 days. We had a chat with the team at Vodafone about this game changer for the prepaid channel. What does this mean for your epay retailers? Most customers recharge $30 or less per month, so whilst having 35 day expiry means less recharges per year, it incentivises existing customers to increase from $30 to $40 recharges (increasing their yearly spend from $390 to $400). We want stores to think $40 not $30. That’s only $1 extra every recharge for loads more inclusions. Stores may also increase their prepaid customer base by switching customers from postpaid to Prepaid. Remember: We are the only Telco offering 35 day expiry, so any prepaid customer on 28 day expiry will save money and get more inclusions by switching over to Vodafone. As this offer is only effective on the $40+ combos, if you do not see a shift towards the higher denominations then this change will not affect your revenue. 16

What does this mean for your customers? By bumping up to the $40 combo, customers will get double the data and an extra week to use it – meaning more value for money with less wastage and only 10 recharges a year (the equivalent to getting three months free!). This is equivalent to a 20 percent discount for our customers, which previously was something offered only a couple of times a year in supermarkets. We have also shifted our Super 1000 minutes (now with 15 Countries) down to the $40 price point, and added an additional 10 countries on the $50+ (25 Countries). What’s more is we have increased our standard data inclusions across the range. Do current Prepaid Vodafone customers automatically get this offer when they next recharge? No, they will need to change their plan and select the Data or Talk combo. epay retailers should advise all Vodafone Prepaid customers of this deal and how they can access it. Can new prepaid customers get this offer? They will receive the new inclusions and
bonus data when they activate a Starter Pack or $2 SIM on a $40 (or higher) Combo. Do they get it on activation? Yes, provided they activate (using a ‘starter SIM’ or ‘$2 SIM + recharge’) on the $40 Combo or higher. Note: Non tri-fit SIMs will automatically activate on the Talk combo option and customers can switch between Talk to Data Combo on their next recharge. What happens if customers recharge on $30 or less? They will still get the original inclusions but won’t be eligible for the 35 day expiry (this applies to $40 and above Combos). Does this mean epay retailers will see a drop in revenue? Most customers recharge $30 or less per month, so whilst having 35 day expiry means less recharges per year, it incentivises existing customers to increase from $30 to $40 recharges (increasing their yearly spend from $390 to $400, and consequently increasing your margin). We want stores to think $40 not $30.

Key information for retailers
HOW TO DO A TERMINAL REFUND
If you print out the wrong voucher or an incorrect amount, follow these steps: Menu – Refund Transactions – Sale Type – Enter Serial Number or swipe card – Enter the epay Transaction Number – Refund receipt printed. Remember, refunding a voucher TXN from the terminal does not deactivate the voucher until it has been checked and blocked by the network. This could take several weeks. If the voucher is found to be used, you will be recharged for the full TXN amount.
HOW TO REQUEST A REFUND BY PHONE
Call epay customer service on 1300 301 408 within 72 hours of printing the voucher to log a refund or void request. Requests outside of this time-frame will not be accepted. Retain copies of the voucher and/or POSA card plus POSA Activation receipt until these have been cleared for refund by the network. Not all products can be refunded and will never be refunded if they have been used. If you believe you have been defrauded, refer to the WHAT TO DO section
