hile I’m writing this editorial, another variant of the Covid virus has popped up, this time coming from South Africa and the first thought that crossed my mind was, oh no, there we go again. As restrictions are easing, borders are opening up and we are finally allowed to visit friends and family, Europe has gone into panic mode, reintroducing lockdowns and other restrictions to deal with this outbreak. I was slightly optimistic about being able to travel to trade fairs overseas at some point in 2022—I was actually looking forward to it—however, the first trade fair in Germany, Heimtextil, which was scheduled for January, has already been cancelled. Will more follow? Time will tell. Luckily, Maison&Objet September 2021 did go ahead in Paris and while we weren’t able to attend, BDA London’s Trendhub team were in attendance to scope out the latest trends across home and interiors. Check out their report on page 18. In our industry focus on page 10 we look back at 2021 (and forward to 2022), but instead of dwelling on the bad stuff, we look at some of the good things that happened including the launch of several new companies. We were also able to attend a few trade fairs in between lockdowns and border closures and we look forward to gift fairs being back in full swing this year, with AGHA Sydney Gift Fair and Reed Gift Fairs held in Sydney in February as well as Gift & Lifestyle in Melbourne. TheSuperCool started as an experiment and has become a successful business celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2021. On page 12 we chat to the husband and wife team behind this retail emporium about surviving two years of lockdowns, starting a family in between store launches and their long-term plans. While 2021 was another tough year, small retail businesses are hopeful about the future and expect to be back at pre-pandemic trading levels this year. However, research also shows that one in three do not have a plan in place to ensure future success and two in five are worried about finding enough suitable staff. Read more on page 22. One retailer that has every reason to be optimistic about the future is Aussie business Fig & Bloom, which pivoted in 2017 from a subscription based service to gifting and is now on track to turn over $14 million this financial year. Read all about founder Kellie Brown and her success on page 26. Mother’s Day is a special day for all mums around the world. On page 32 we talk to three women who seized the opportunity to run their own business while being a mum at the same time. We also share some tips to maximise your Mother’s Day sales. Don’t miss our product pages starting on page 36, showcasing all the latest ranges and collections for your store shelves with the seasonal selection being Mother’s Day. G

MOVING As we look back on another year dominated by Covid, we also look forward to what 2022 will bring including the return of gift fairs and new product launches and ventures.

W

hen 2020 was coming to an end, we couldn’t wait for the new year and make a fresh start. But 2021 wasn’t much better as the pandemic continued to cause havoc for many businesses with restrictions remaining in place for most of the year. However, instead of dwelling on all the bad stuff that happened this year, and there’s plenty of it, there were some good things as new businesses were launched, others were sold and some celebrated major milestones. Dionne Taylor spotted a gap in the market during the past Covid year when she launched Shmoist, a hand sanitiser and moisturiser in one. “We launched Shmoist in March 2021 in the midst of our 10 giftguideonline.com.au

lockdown,” she explains. “We have seen tremendous growth from a retail standpoint and are now in 300 stores nationally. We identified that travel would come back and knew that customers loved the Aussie made element of our brand, so we invested time and money into the creation of two new fragrances which have a strong providence connection to Australia. “In November this year we lunched G’Day (Kakadu Plum) and Byron Babe (Aussie Native Rosalina) and took a more therapeutic fragrance approach. This has sold really well and has opened the doors for us to sell at the airport through luxury beauty retailer Amuse for any outbound passengers in Terminal 2. “We are currently working on

expanding our range which will launch in Q1 next year, and focus on our hero fragrances for other daily use products. Watch this space,” she enthuses. With people wanting to live more sustainably and having a positive impact on the lives of those that make their clothes and accessories, entrepreneurs Fabi Alvarez and Vlad da Cunha knew it was the right time to launch their social business, Akili, which offers ethical and sustainable products to conscious consumers in Australia. “This year has been packed with difficulties and corresponding opportunities,” explains Alvarez. “International freight has been incredibly challenging for businesses importing into Australia during multiple Covid outbreaks. However, these difficulties

provided us with an opportunity to offer store owners quick deliveries with low minimum order quantities for unique, ethically handmade items produced overseas. For example, Akili’s basket bags ethically handmade in Tanzania with Miluli Grass have been incredibly successful. “In 2022, Akili is looking forward to expanding its vegan product range. We noticed an ever-growing opportunity to serve customers wanting to reduce their carbon footprint with environmentally friendly products.” Another ‘side effect’ from Covid was the working from home trend and while many people are enjoying the fact they can work from home and don’t have to commute to work, for small businesses it is not that easy to

ON move everything and set up shop in their own home. “We sell canvas prints, art prints, wallpaper and decals online and we manufacture them ourselves,” says I Heart Wall Art owner, Edwina Cameron. “At the end of 2020, we decided to bring our manufacturing in-house and almost by the time we had done so, the business had grown beyond what we could handle from a shed on our property,” explains Cameron. “So, now we do our art prints from here and outsource our canvas prints. It’s a constant juggle to find the right balance in the business, particularly as we have a couple of casual employees to factor in now too. “We could outsource everything, but they’d lose their jobs. We

could bring everything in house but it would mean hiring more people and finding bigger premises, and that’s not what we’re after in life right now. I’m not sure we’ll ever get the balance totally right, but we’re enjoying the journey,” she adds. “The highlights of getting to work from home in a business we both are passionate about mostly outweigh the challenges though (in a good week).” Carolyn Dorrian, the woman behind new brand, Mrs Tablescape, says business has been exciting and such a steep learning curve since launching last year. “I am trying to make table setting a new fashionable trend and there has been a lot of interest,” she enthuses.

insight

“It is just keeping the momentum going and coming up with new unique and creative ideas. For Australia Day there will be hand painted Vegemite candles styled with an Australian artist’s rendition of what she considers quintessentially Australian on a painted tablecloth. There will also be classy beach style themes and collections, and bespoke wavy plates for restaurants and retail. So lots of exciting things happening in 2022.” The year 2021 also saw some milestones for companies such as Arnott’s of Australia, which after more than 30 years in the industry has been acquired by Cotton Candy Imports, while after 11 years, Cocco Corp owner and founder, Nigel Treliving, has decided to sell his business. Spirit Publishing celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and what a roller coaster ride it has been, says owner Mary Bradner. “Personally I can’t believe it and I keep getting the timelines wrong, but here we are after 20 years of doing business in Australia and New Zealand,” she says. “Times have been sometimes tough and sometimes good and always interesting. We’re proud to be here and to have survived a major pandemic as well as major changes in retail. “Biggest lessons learnt, trust your gut, hire people to fill in the areas that you’re not competent in and try not to stress. The last being the biggest lesson learnt during this pandemic…no use worrying as everything is what it is and you’re never going to please everyone. “I’m looking forward to the future and to hopefully seeing customers and staff at the gift show in February 2022. That is pending what’s around the corner.” Indeed, many trade fairs had been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to continued outbreaks, and the lockdowns and restrictions that

followed. However, Reed Gift Fairs managed to hold a smaller sized version of its gift fair in Sydney in April 2021 and is looking forward to 2022. “Now that we have reached more than 90 per cent vaccination rates across NSW and borders are open, we’re pleased to be back to a full scale fair in February, running alongside Life Instyle at ICC Darling Harbour, with 450+ exhibitors on display,” says director, Cory McCarrick. “There is real excitement for this one and we’re expecting a huge turnout. Our exhibitors are telling us that all of their retailers are attending as they have missed seeing all their favourite exhibitors in one place at the same time. “We’re seeing lots of new retailers registering to attend the fair for the first time; retailers that have been in business for less than a year,” McCarrick adds. Expertise Events also managed to organise several events during 2021 including the last tabletop fair in Sydney in November. “As a sector and business devastated by Covid our clients’ passion and determination kept us going,” says managing director, Gary Fitz-Roy. “In March 2021 we organised a gift fair in Melbourne and then toured smaller trade events in Adelaide and Perth and in November ran, after another lockdown, a Sydney event, largely due to the support of both sides of the community. “2022 will offer businesses that are prepared to change tremendous opportunity, whether you’re a retailer or supplier, but we need to ‘default’ to being a start-up with passion, energy and optimism. “Einstein had a quote worth keeping in mind: ‘The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking’.” G JANUARY 2022 11

hen TheSuperCool launched 10 years ago, pop-ups were still a new and exciting concept, something founders Kate Vandermeer and husband Noonie are well aware of. “Pop-ups were a fresh and new idea 10 years ago and now are de riguer,” says Vandermeer. “Homewares and interior items were not as saturated as they were then—there were less competitors. Carving our your own point of difference nowadays is more challenging and the costs of running a business are much higher; wages are crazy, freight for goods is nuts and general operating costs are much higher. “A great change for the better though is the focus on organic, ethically made, sustainable 12

making and packaging. This has been a super pleasant change to see more brands getting on board. We’ve always supported these philosophies but with more groundswell, more brands are making these choices more affordable,” she enthuses. A lot can happen in 10 years on both a personal and business level. “Think of a child and how much they grow in 10 years—from baby to tween, that’s us. We have learned a lot; what began as an experiment has become a serious business that is our combined family income and during that time we’ve had two ‘real’ children, launched 30 pop-ups, done quite a few collaborations, launched four different versions of our online store and expanded three times into our current flagship emporium.

“I think we’ve been lucky; we’re still married and we still have the business. We’re fortunate that our skillsets are complementary—I like to do all the creative roles and Noonie is great at the operations, staff management and tech stuff.” However, like any other business TheSuperCool had to deal with the impact of the global pandemic and two long back to back years of extended lockdowns, which really challenged the Melbourne based couple. “Fortunately online orders and loyal customers support helped us but it was hardcore,” she adds. Something else that challenged Vandermeer during those 10 years was expanding the business while starting a family at the same time. “Any mama will attest to that late pregnancy, birth and first year being the toughest time in your life and then we (naively) decided to have three pop-ups at once (two semi-permanent and one temporary) over the same Christmas time. Let’s just say it was hectic.” While in hindsight this might not have been the best decision they made, they wouldn’t have it any other way. “Hindsight is a privilege and there are many things we would have done differently, but isn’t that life? You make a decision, you roll with it, you live with the consequences and you move on for better or worse. So whilst there are decisions upon reflection we could have done differently, it taught us valuable lessons and without those lessons, maybe we wouldn’t be here today?” Indeed, and Vandermeer is happy to share these lessons and everything else she has learned during the past 10 years with other (budding) entrepreneurs. “I’ve been approached by many people wanting to start out with a new concept and I can tell if they are really ready to give their life to that idea or not. You have to

love your business. Because to make it a success, you’ve got to go through some hard times and if you don’t love your business, you’ll sink. “So choose something you’re passionate about. Don’t be afraid to try something and don’t let fear get in the way. We always wanted to open a space with a café in it and we wanted to run the café. We realised after doing an intensive weekend course that we just weren’t that passionate about running the café. We just wanted to curate the right person for a café to run alongside our concept. I think we avoided a bit of a train wreck there.” She adds that cash flow really is one of the most important things when running a business and if you don’t get this right you could get into a lot of trouble. “Any business owner will back me here; you have momentum and so much interest, goals and some success but the cash flow to back these plans needs to be managed. We have always been clever and resourceful with our cash flow, but there were two to three years where we put ourselves under too much pressure. “My dad was a successful businessman before recently retiring and he always said ‘save the coins and the dollars save themselves’ and he’s right. So we assess all aspects of the business and think how could we make a better choice and how could we save money to spend it more wisely.” So what plans do Vandermeer and her husband have for the next 10 years? In the short term, the duo would like to continue to support and hunt down incredible brands that fit their ethos and grow their team to step back a bit more from the micro management. “Long term we’d like to pass the baton of TheSuperCool on to the right people and pursue other creative endeavours.” G

MAIS ON & O BJ ET K ey Ta ke o u ts Ra c h e l Wo o d fi ne Tre n dh u b by BDA Lo ndo n

As the first major European tradeshow to take place since March 2020, anticipations were high for Maison & Objet. The need for creative stimulation was greater than ever following 15 months deprived of in-person events. Despite exhibitor and visitor numbers being down, as expected, there was a palpable buzz in the air as brands, buyers and designers descended on Paris’ Villepinte Exhibition centre. BDA London’s Trendhub team were in attendance to scope out the latest trends across home and interiors.

Three overriding design threads were evident across the show—nature, craft and comfort—each of which showcased themes we’ve seen accelerated by the pandemic—a reflection of how consumers have been spending and reprioritising their time. Perhaps the most visible of these themes, reconnecting with nature, rekindles emotional attachments to the outdoors, bringing nature indoors through colour, texture, print and form. Raw canvas tones and rich earthens with a natural feel dominated textiles, while lush greens came through in dinnerware and decorative items in particular. Organic designs featuring mushrooms and wild flowers decorated soft furnishings, while colourful

Fossilised forms and organically informed shapes came through across decorative objects and lighting. ‘Living’ textures created through mottled finishes had a microbial look, while ‘dripping’ metal forms and hairy textures created a sense of movement. Faux, dried and preserved flowers continue to be key for dressing sets and complementing decorative product offerings, with more luxurious architectural stems coming through. The inclusion of dried edible elements including tomatoes, peppers and berries added an unusual conversational update. Pieces with a handcrafted look and feel had the appearance of being

Crafted items with worn and aged surface textures had the appearance of having been unearthed. Blackened and scorched finishes took inspiration from Shou Sugi Ban— the Japanese craft of scorching wood—a traditional process that protects the material itself, which is growing in popularity within architecture, and has found its way onto products from outdoor furniture to artwork. Small retail businesses are hopeful about the future and expect to be back at pre-pandemic trading levels next year.

W

hile the world is coping with a new Covid variant and a fourth wave is sweeping most of Europe, Aussie retailers remain optimistic and are looking forward to the future, with 81 per cent reporting a level of confidence that they will be operating at pre-pandemic levels within the next six months. However, the Intuit Quickbooks’ Back to Business research also shows that one in three do not have a plan in place to ensure future success and two in five are worried about finding enough suitable staff. 22

giftguideonline.com.au

“Aussie small businesses have done it tough over the course of the pandemic, especially those in Melbourne who endured the longest lockdown in the world,” says Lars Leber, vice president and country manager at Intuit QuickBooks Australia. “We’re thrilled to see the economy starting to recover and to hear that small businesses feel hopeful about the future. “We’ve seen a notable shift in small businesses prioritising the health and wellbeing of their employees, showing how the pandemic has made everyone

reconsider what’s most important. They still need the support of the government and Aussie consumers and want to see continued vaccine uptake.” More than one in three small businesses pivoted their business to explore new revenue streams during the pandemic (37 per cent), with most (85 per cent) saying these streams will continue to be an essential part of their business. Among those who have implemented new technologies or plan to do so, the most common focuses are financial processes (43 per cent), ecommerce/

marketing (41 per cent), inventory management (21 per cent), contract management (17 per cent) and human resources (15 per cent). Female-led small businesses are more likely to have implemented or plan to implement new technology to improve business processes than male-led counterparts (49 per cent vs 39 per cent). They are also more likely to have completed training related to their business during the course of the pandemic or plan to in the next six months (43 per cent vs 31 per cent).

The research also reveals that female-led small businesses are significantly more likely than male counterparts to view investing in social media as key to future business success (34 per cent vs 22 per cent). They are also more likely to see social media support of their business from consumers as important for future success (30 per cent vs 19 per cent).

The social network According to an Essence survey, 41 per cent of respondents worldwide made purchases or intend to make purchases involving social platforms. While social media platforms have always provided an environment for buyers and sellers to interact, the survey demonstrates

24

giftguideonline.com.au

a shift towards organised commerce on platforms. Increasingly, social commerce enables discovery, browsing and purchasing to take place on one platform without the need to interact with any external websites or applications. Ultimately, it creates a seamless experience with fewer clicks and higher potential revenue and conversion rates. Social innovations have propelled the growth of virtual shopping. Live shopping and conversational commerce experiences increase the propensity to buy on social media. Four out of five respondents are likely to buy on social media if they have watched a livestream or participated in conversational

commerce. Livestreaming has emerged as a major factor in luxury social ecommerce. The research indicates that most consumers enjoy the livestream shopping experience, with almost half (43 per cent) of respondents claiming to have enjoyed it and 39 per cent of respondents highly enjoyed it. Globally, 85 per cent of the respondents who watched shopping livestreams report that they are more likely to purchase via social media, while more than 50 per cent of Australians participate in live shopping and conversational commerce and 80 per cent of those people enjoyed the shopping experience. Seventyone per cent of Aussies are likely to buy on social media. “We expect that the future of online shopping—and not just social commerce—will be discovery-driven,” explains Aniket Basu, senior director, technology and ecommerce, at Essence. “Customers tend to be exposed to new and innovative products as they browse more on social media or encounter algorithmically mediated recommendations from friends and family on social platforms. “Ecommerce is maturing as a field, with social media giving brands and retailers new ways to reach audiences and new growth opportunities. In this environment, social commerce serves as a key future-proofing method for the next five years and beyond.” G

S

ome people just have the entrepreneurial gene from an early age such as Fig & Bloom founder, Kellie Brown, who started selling jewellery to school friends and at local markets from the age of six. After being made redundant in 2015 following a decade-long career as a designer in the fashion industry, she had her lightbulb moment during Sunday afternoon drinks with friends. “On the afternoon of St. Kilda Festival in 2015, my partner Dan and I were sitting around with some friends having a few drinks when the conversation around my next career move was brought up,” she reminisces. “Everyone there encouraged me to pursue my entrepreneurial spirit rather than go back to the mundane nine ‘til five.” She identified a gap in the market for designer florals that changed with the seasons and trends. “When I was working in the fashion industry, I would collect flowers for all kinds of events and

photoshoots and would be very particular with the types of colours used, through to the wrapping and ribbons, so I guess I had an underlying passion for florals.” That same year, Fig & Bloom officially launched as a subscriptionbased flower delivery service two weeks from conceptualisation. From 2015 to 2017, the business operated from Brown’s garage in Hawthorn East, providing locals with premium florals on a weekly or monthly basis. “At the time of launching, there were only a handful of online florists offering delivery in Melbourne, with more premium options only found in physical stores. “I knew there were people out there who, like me, enjoyed purchasing premium flowers for themselves each week to bring colour, life and fragrance to their home. And I thought, let’s replicate this online.” In its first year of operation, the duo were running the business on their own and delivered around

Kellie Brown’s top 3 business tips 1. Open and honest communication Open and honest communication is important. People never want to mention the elephant in the room. They worry about how they might look or how they will be judged. However, a business is like a sporting team; the only way to win against talented opposition is to keep each other honest. Sugar coating things might help people feel better, but it doesn’t help you win.

2. Expect excellence As the business founder nobody will ever care as much as you do but that doesn’t mean you can’t expect excellence from the team. One of the worst things that could happen for a business is low standards discouraging participation from the most talented, high achieving people. If they leave because they feel like they are carrying weaker players, you are left with a weak team.

3. Embrace learning and growth As a small business—which has now become a medium size business—one thing that has been constant at Fig & Bloom is change. The only way to thrive in an environment of constant change is to embrace learning and growth and not shy away from it.

4,000 floral arrangements. “As soon as an order came through, I would jump in my car, race down to the local flower wholesaler and design the bouquet in the boot of my car. I wanted to be the business that promised and delivered on quality and service, and the flowers couldn’t be any fresher.” Soon after launching, Brown spent time in New York City studying the art of floristry at New York Flower School, where she was taught by some of the world’s most recognised florists including Shane Connelly, who was the wedding floral designer to Prince William and Princess Kate and is also principal florist to Queen Elizabeth II. “The creative thinking and enthusiasm in New York certainly helped in the creation of Fig & Bloom’s design aesthetic, as it steers away from the traditional beliefs of what floristry is and allowed me to weave my fashion experience into the curation of each arrangement.” In 2017, after experiencing a growth of 200 per cent year-onyear and identifying their biggest sales driver, the duo shifted the

business model to floral gifting as opposed to the subscriptionbased service on offer. “We found our customers were gifting flowers rather than opting for the subscription service, so we shifted to a predominately gifting model with subscriptions as a secondary service.” With the shift came an influx of orders and Fig & Bloom graduated from the garage and leased its first shopfront in Kew, Victoria, which doubled as a studio for online orders. Since inception, Fig & Bloom has expanded along the east coast and now employs over 48 team members with two physical stores in Melbourne and Sydney and one studio in Brisbane, delivering to over 900+ locations in Sydney, Melbourne and more recently, Brisbane. With over 93,000 bouquets sold every year and working with brands such as Facebook, Ferrari, Lexus, L’oreal and high-end clientele like Elton John, The Block and Shameless, Fig & Bloom is expected to double in size this financial year and is on track to earn $14 million in revenue. Mum’s the word mother’s day

Mother’s Day is a special day for all mums around the world. We talk to three women who seized the opportunity to run their own business while being a mum at the same time.

Sarré Guille, Her Hands You left your corporate career to start your own business. Can you tell us more? Her Hands has been born from my dream to create a ‘global village’—one where mums can buy beautiful products for their little ones that support another mum from a vulnerable population to provide for her children. I had the idea for the business a few years ago while on maternity leave. I spent my 20-year corporate career growing businesses and I really wanted to use those skills to grow a business that levels the playing field, even if just a little. But I didn’t actually launch it until early 2021—initially Covid forced me to pack the idea away (who in their right mind would leave a stable income and start a business during a pandemic?!). Ultimately it was the lockdown, and the forced focus on ‘the things that matter’, that was the push that I needed to make it happen.

How do you balance work and family with (small) kids at home? To be honest, I am probably less ‘balanced’ than I ever was when I was working in corporate, in terms of the long hours I work at nights. But I feel so passionate about, and committed to, what I am doing that it really energises me—rather than drains me, as it perhaps did in the past. My husband is also an incredible support both in terms of supporting me through the constant challenges and wobbles that come with a new business, and in his support at home.

Can you share some tips for other mums who want to start their own business? I think it’s to get really clear on why you are looking to start and what will that mean for you in terms of time and financial investment. Is it really a creative outlet you are looking for, rather than a business? In which case, would you enjoy it more if you build it as a side project? For me, I want to provide ongoing and sustainable employment to our

female artisans, which they have commented is so important to enabling them to provide schooling, healthcare, etc, for their children. In order to have that impact it needs to be a business, so I needed to get really clear at the outset on what that means financially and in time spent away from my daughter.

What makes mums successful in business? While there is still a long way to go, I think we’re coming into a really exciting new era where women generally are recognising the importance of bringing their whole selves to business. We have realised that we don’t have to fit in to the previous way of doing things and that bringing—and embracing—our feminine to the table is critical for the change we are all working towards for our world. And that’s really powerful.

What’s your ideal Mother’s Day and what’s the best advice your own mum gave you? My little girl is only four, so it’s definitely a hand drawn card and morning cuddles in bed. My mum always said, when in doubt, put on a big smile. It’s true, a smile shifts you into the right space to tackle even the biggest problems. 32 giftguideonline.com.au

Avi Pullen, Pullen & Co What was the inspiration behind the launch of your business and how do you balance work and family? My inspiration is ultimately my family and our new home. Before starting the business, I had a full-time corporate job, but since having our second child during the pandemic, I realised the value of spending time at home, watch my kids grow and take good care of our home is what makes me happy. With this in mind, the business idea came around. We launched in June of 2021. Good and consistent time management is important for us and a wellestablished routine. I work whenever the kids are resting or sleeping during the day and do work at nights as well.

What are your top tips for other mums who are looking to start a business? Take risks and believe in yourself. When I became a mum, I never imagined I can do things beyond my imagination. This made me braver

and more confident that I applied on creating the business that I love. I think mums can do anything. Our nature is to flourish, to love and to take care of people closest to us. What we do and what we are in our household reflects what we do in business. It’s all about loving what you do and never stop.

What does the ideal Mother’s Day look like for you? I’m very lucky to have a wonderful husband to spoil me every Mother’s Day. I love going out as a family, visit local businesses, enjoy a good coffee and good food.

Best advice you’ve been given? My beautiful mother-in-law, who’s been on my side since becoming a mum, inspired me to always be kind to myself. Motherhood is not a walk in the park, there are plenty of difficult days, but we always get through it.

for our living room and we loved them. We try to have blinkers on to what other businesses are doing and as we are our own target market, produce products that we would like in our home.

How do you balance work and family with (small) kids at home? Hmm this is a struggle. I don’t think we do have the balance worked out to be honest. We have three kids, two year old Lily, four year old Jaxton and six year old Flynn. Paul is partner in this business and he helps out a lot. The phase in the children’s lives right now is very busy and I’m a mum first and foremost. I have a couple of days free when they are at kindy and school, so I try to get as much done as possible and then bits in between packing during their lunch times or rest times. We always try to be as responsive as possible to our customers but sometimes real life things are just more important—we do start quite a few emails with ‘so sorry for the late reply’ and we just hope that our customers understand we’re not a large team and sometimes your email may not be answered straight away, because I have to go grab my four year old son who has just climbed the back gate and is standing on it like karate kid.

Tori Brelsford, Warren Hill Tell us more about your business and what inspired its launch? We officially launched just after Christmas in 2018. When Flynn and Jaxton were younger there weren’t many neutral baby accessories on the market. Everything was quite noisy and bright. We couldn’t find anything that went with our style and that we knew could transition through baby, toddler and young infants. A lot of baby items were also designed to be part of a nursery with typical cartoons and colours, but we wanted pieces that we were proud to have in our living room too… Our play mats were born from a genuine need for high quality, neutral play mats as they just weren’t available to buy. We’ve recently launched our family floor cushions which again came from wanting something like a play mat to lay on with our kids, but with extra padding… so we got a couple of one metre floor cushions made up 34 giftguideonline.com.au

Why do you think so many mums are successful in business? I think having a baby disrupts the routine of normal day to day life and maybe it’s in those times that you pay more attention to opportunities that arise, that and if we can survive pregnancy, giving birth and raising a little human, business is easy, right?

What does the ideal Mother’s Day look like for you? Ideal Mother’s Day would be very simple, a coffee and morning down the beach with the kiddies and Paul. That’s where we are all happiest.

Best advice your mother gave you? I think to be kind is definitely something she has taught me. She also has always showed us her emotions when she’s happy, sad, etc. And that all emotions are ok. We’ve cried happy together and sad tears together and we both are very connected in that way. She is my best friend.

4 tips to maximise Mother’s Day sales MOTHER’S DAY IS ONE of the most important shopping events for retailers when it comes to sales after the busy Christmas season and Valentine’s Day celebrations. We share some tips and tricks to make sure your store makes the most of this sales opportunity.

traffic to your store send these businesses free gift cards to offer to their customers and vice versa. Or you can bundle certain products together for the ultimate gift, making the shopping experience as convenient as possible for your customers. Either way, it’s a win win for all.

3. Go sustainable 1. Run special Mother’s Day deals Create special Mother’s Day packages which make it easy for customers to walk into your store and pick a gift without having to search for something more specific. Make sure they are reasonably priced so customers get a good deal and will come back for other gift opportunities. Promote the special deals in your store windows and as soon as you walk into the store to grab their attention straight away. You should also offer the same deals online including social media as more and more Aussies are shopping online for gifts.

2. Support local and partner up Shopping local has become increasingly important for Australians in the wake of the pandemic and Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to partner up with florists, jewellery stores and restaurants. For example, to increase

If you haven’t added eco-friendly products to your store yet, Mother’s Day is the perfect time to do so. With Aussies becoming more concerned about the environment, they are looking for ways to minimise their impact which includes the gifts they buy for friends and family. You can add a small selection to your store to start with and see what products work well before you invest in bigger shipments. Also, offering eco-friendly wrapping paper and bags will show customers you care.

4. Fast and free delivery With more and more people shopping online, offer your customers a special deal such as free shipping for all Mother’s Day gifts. Fast and easy delivery is one of the key drivers for shoppers to stay on a site and make a purchase and not move to another one with better options. Keep this in mind, online shoppers tend to spend more than planned so they can get free shipping. G
