PERSONAL BEST

Personal care brands embracing innovation are 2.5 times more likely to see sales growth.

In the ever-evolving beauty industry, understanding and fulfilling meaningful consumer needs has become paramount, especially following significant shifts post Covid-19.

NIQ recently released its Global Beauty Innovation Report, providing a comprehensive view of the state of innovation and future trends in the beauty industry across 14 markets.

Personal care brands embracing innovation are 2.5 times more likely to see overall sales growth compared to those with stagnant or declining innovation sales. Strong innovations attract new buyers, create new usage occasions, justify price premiums and keep brands top of mind.

Brands delivering strong products can see a significant upside, with an average year one volume increase of 30 per cent compared to their less successful counterparts. Effective activation leads to a 20 per cent lift in ad-driven sales, especially when creative elements are optimised. This underscores the importance of having both a great product and ensuring that the marketing and promotional efforts are well-executed and resonate with the target audience.

“Despite increasing caution in consumer spending, consumers are less willing to cut back on their beauty expenditures compared to other FMCG products, with 80 per cent indicating they intend to maintain or increase their spending in this area,”

Claire Marty, vice president, global client development, comments.

“The beauty industry’s global popularity continues to rise, with industry sales maintaining a double-digit growth rate across all regions and is expected to bring an increase in scale of $300 billion over the next decade.”

Breakthrough trends accelerating innovation in the beauty and personal care industry include:

• Clean and sustainable: the trend towards clean and sustainable products is growing in the CPG category, focusing on ethical sourcing, eco-friendly packaging and reducing carbon footprints. In South Korea clean beauty has become a lifestyle choice with manufacturers focusing on eco-friendly packaging and sustainable production practices.

• Ingredient focus: global consumers are shopping with an ‘ingredients first’ mindset, prioritising products based on their ingredient lists. Consumers are interested in which ingredients are included and also in which are not. UK consumers prioritise results and efficacy over brand names.

• Trusted advisor: celebrities, dermatologists and influencers are shaping beauty decisions through social media. In China, the number of key opinion leaders (KOLs) exceeds 20 million and is growing, while 80 per cent of actual sales come from merely seven per cent of KOLs.

• Personalisation and inclusivity: consumers increasingly prefer brands that address individual needs, leading to more tailored experiences like hair and skin quizzes. Afroconsumption is the hottest personalisation and inclusivity topic in Brazil, with women opting out of hair straightening products.

• Wellness focussed: consumers are prioritising their wellbeing, leading to a demand for products that support physical, mental and emotional health. The cosmetics industry in France is leveraging on neuroscience targeting both body and mind. Luxury brands are creating products improving both skin appearance and emotional wellbeing.

• Convenience and accessibility: direct–to-consumer (DTC) products and at-home beauty treatments surged in popularity during Covid-19. This trend continues to grow as electric cosmetics and muscle stimulation devices have surged in popularity.

• Luxury for all: this trend in beauty reflects the growing availability of highquality products at affordable prices. Democratisation of luxury is driven by innovative brands offering exceptional products rivaling high-end counterparts. Consumers in Saudi Arabia value highquality ingredients and are willing to pay a premium, particularly on personal and beauty care.

Successful activation in the beauty industry hinges on the synergy between a compelling idea and a robust product with one third of new launches faltering due to lack of sufficient support during their first year. G

HOUSE OF STYLE

We chat to SKARONG co-founder Marielle Collins about its unique concept and why this versatile wardrobe summer staple is so popular with Aussies and tourists alike.

edges together, but they looked bulky and unflattering and I knew there had to be a better solution.

“I had an epiphany and remembered the design that I came up with after I had finished university many years ago, on that very same beach. After 18 months of perfecting the design, the SKARONG was born which was not only functional because of its strategically placed centre front seam to prevent embarrassing ‘wardrobe moments’, but multi-functional and figure flattering.”

Because the SKARONG design is so unique she was successful in being granted an Australian Design Registration and SKARONG was formally launched for summer 2016/2017.

“SKARONG is such a simple design yet there is nothing like it on the market, which is why we were so successful in obtaining a global patent.

“Our customers love the unique design and the fact that SKARONG is Australian made. The best compliment for us is the high rate of repeat customers who tend to try one first then get back online to add more to their collection.

What do you get when you blend a skirt and a sarong? SKARONG, a uniquely shaped and sleek convertible one piece design that is incredibly simple to tie and wear in countless ways.

The wearer can be her own ‘designer’ as she can style her SKARONG however she likes—it can transition from day to evening wear with ease, which makes the versatility

of the SKARONG design a huge selling point, says co-founder Marielle Collins, who launched the brand with her husband Jeremy.

“I saw a need for a concept like SKARONG when I observed so many women of all ages struggling with their traditional sarongs at my local beach,” she explains.

“Not only were they having difficulty tying their sarongs and struggling to keep the

“We sell to luxury resorts throughout Australia and the feedback we get from them is that tourists love buying SKARONG not only because of the design but also because all SKARONGs have the Australian Made tag. The tourists know that they are taking back with them a genuine and quintessential Australian item.”

SKARONG’s popularity led to free television exposure on Home and Away, Studio 10 and Sunrise on Channel 7, being invited to collaborate with Miss World Australia and the Australian Fashion Federation to showcase

A day at the beach inspired the SKARONG
Skirt by day, top by night

SKARONG at the Gold Coast Swim Week 2024.

“We love bringing a beautifully simple solution successfully to market to make a relaxing day at the beach more comfortable and stylish. In addition, giving the beachgoer the option to be able to ‘restyle’ her SKARONG because of its versatility and wear it out after leaving the beach.”

SKARONG ethically produces all products in Australia. They are made from breathable easy-care poly/spandex and are available in four different sizes (XS, S, M & L), so a perfect fit is ensured every time and for everybody regardless of size or body shape, Collins adds.

“We also have SKARONGs in our collection that are made using fabric that is constructed from 92 per cent recycled plastic bottles that were saved from polluting the world’s oceans. We will gradually be adding more sustainable fabrics to our collection as our Eco Meshes are extremely popular and some of our best-sellers.”

The mid and maxi lengths give the wearer the option of not only wearing her SKARONG sarong style and as skirts, but also as various dress styles and longer style tops.

“Our customers tell us that their SKARONG is perfect when going on holidays because the flexibility to switch just one SKARONG into various styles is the same as packing at least six different items of clothing. They love that they are so light to pack and the easy-care poly/spandex means they can be washed by hand, they are quick drying and don’t crease easily.

“As SKARONG has such an extensive range of fabrics our stockists just don’t have enough space to dedicate to SKARONG, so we continually get online sales from customers

who have bought from one of our stockists but then hop online to purchase more pieces that aren’t available in the stores.”

Indeed, one of Collins’ biggest challenges is getting stocked in stores with as wide a variety of styles to maximise sales.

“SKARONGs are a bit like great wines—you need to display a good variety in order to sell more,” she says.

“A lack of government encouragement and support to clothing manufacturing industries makes it difficult to find local makers that can achieve our high-quality standards that is also cost effective for small businesses like SKARONG.

“We would love to expand into other countries, as SKARONG is a universal garment. The main obstacle to growth into overseas markets is logistics. It is costly to manufacture and ship out of Australia, especially for a small business and we want SKARONG to be well-priced for all our customers. Definitely expanding and selling to other countries is high on our list and something we will be looking into in the next year or two.”

The latest addition to the collection is the new micro length which is shorter than the mini length. Collins says they had numerous requests from younger customers asking if they had a shorter, sassier length so the micro length was introduced, which is already selling really well.

“Swimwear is next on our list which will be complementing the colours and prints in the SKARONG collection,” she enthuses.

“SKARONG is committed to lessening our impact on the environment so our desire to minimise waste has us working on creative uses for our offcuts and remnant fabrics. We are already producing items like belts, head turbans for chemotherapy patients and other accessories using our fabric remnants.

“We are also currently working on another design that is SKARONG based but a longer version, which is aimed at the eveningwear market—some with diamanté accessories. We will also have matching accessory items made from upcycling our larger fabric remnants—all very exciting for us.” G

rules MY KITCHEN

The internet is buzzing with predictions for 2025 kitchen trends, but what’s actually relevant for Australian homes?

From ultra-accessorised islands to features that enhance our health and wellbeing, 2025’s kitchen is all about style, substance and smart living. Here are seven of the hottest trends you can expect to see in 2025, according to kitchen expert Mike Turner, managing director at Nouvelle Designer Kitchens, which will influence the kind of kitchen and cookware accessories consumers will buy for their homes.

1. Pimped-up islands

“Kitchen islands are moving beyond simple prep spaces to become multi-functional powerhouses—they’re now the centre of family life,” says Turner.

“As such, we’re seeing more customisation than ever, with homeowners designing islands to suit the way they cook, dine and entertain—dream set-ups might include anything from induction cooktops, steamers and electric grills to built-in herb gardens.”

2. Multi-functional kitchens

“The pandemic made us want more adaptable living spaces, with the ability to switch effortlessly from work and relaxation to entertaining. With many people moving to smaller abodes where every centimetre matters, it’s a trend that’s set to continue in 2025.

“Kitchens are going increasingly multi-functional, with features like movable islands on castors, two-level islands that provide dedicated space to meal prep and dine, flexible furniture and versatile, rotating cabinetry units.

“Integrating ‘non-kitchen’ functions into the kitchen is also trending upwards, such as laundry facilities in a kitchen or a butler’s pantry, an office nook or a dedicated refreshment area such as a coffee station or bar, complete with a wine fridge,” he says.

iStock-Ilona Shorokhova
“Earthy and eclectic tones, many drawn from the natural world, will come to the fore in 2025, creating that grounding sense many of us crave.”

3. Warm, nostalgic colours

“Amid a climate of global political uncertainty, many people these days are craving comfort, security and the nostalgia of times gone by— sentiments reflected in colour trends.

“Earthy and eclectic tones, many drawn from the natural world, will come to the fore in 2025, creating that grounding sense many of us crave. Think cinnamon, plum, mustard, soft green and deep ocean blue, paired with richly grained timbers and natural stone with intricate and varied patterns. The result is a kitchen that feels personal, layered and comforting—perfect for gathering with loved ones.”

4. Health and wellness features

With an increasing focus on wellness, the kitchen is now seen as the epicentre of a healthy lifestyle. Kitchens in 2025 will integrate wellness-focused features such as steam ovens, water filtration systems, indoor herb gardens and even air purifiers, says Turner. Also expect to see plenty of lush foliage. “Greenery will be a much sought-after addition in just about every room in 2025, but especially in open-plan kitchen/living areas where we spend so much time, helping draw the outside in and making it easier to live healthily, both mentally and physically.”

5. Posh pantries

“Butler’s pantries are nothing new, but they’ve gone next-level in recent years, evolving into an uber-stylish and highly organised extension of our kitchens.”

Luxe pantries now feature floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, sinks and even dishwashers, with customised storage for small appliances and kitchen essentials and high-end finishes such as marble, solid timber, beautiful veneers and brass detailing.

6. Invisible storage

“People want a kitchen that’s easy to use, with everything close to hand, but keeps the working functions hidden from view, particularly if it’s open plan and flows into a living space. This has paved the way for all manner of clever storage innovations,” he says.

From pocket-style doors and ‘magic corners’ that bring the contents of an awkward corner cupboard to you to creative appliance centres and integrated charging stations, the latest kitchen storage innovations help create a sleek, streamlined look while providing ample space for kitchen necessities.

7. Smart tech

“Technology is transforming how we interact with our kitchens, making them more efficient and enjoyable to use. Smart fridges, ovens and lighting systems that can be controlled by voice or smartphone are increasingly the norm, says Turner.

“The integration of smart tech is a game-changer for busy families. Whether it’s discreetly hidden charging stations or device holders inside drawers, pop-up USB ports in an island, dedicated space to hold an iPad so you can follow a recipe or a smart fridge that alerts you when the milk is out of date, kitchens are embracing technology to keep up with our fast-paced lives.” G

Home, body & mind

Koala Eco was born out of a deep desire to find eco-friendly, non-toxic products that were both efficacious and safe for even the littlest members of the family.

When and why did you launch Koala Eco?

Jessica Bragdon (JB): Koala Eco was launched in 2017 to create a healthier, safer environment but without compromising on efficacy. My husband, Paul, and I wanted to create non-toxic, effective cleaning and household products that also respected the planet. This mission became even more personal after our son, Arthur, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at just five weeks old. That experience reinforced our commitment to living naturally and led us to create a range of plant-based products using Australian native botanicals.

How has the brand evolved since then?

JB: One of the most rewarding moments was seeing our products embraced and recognised from being featured in goop, The New York Times and Vanity Fair to expanding into markets like the US and Asia. However, rapid growth has also been one of our biggest challenges with balancing expansion. Over time, we’ve grown from household cleaning solutions to include personal care items, room sprays and even a natural dog wash, always staying true to our eco-friendly non-toxic ethos.

Koala Eco products are biodegradable, vegan and free from harmful chemicals

Tell us more about your latest collection.

JB: Our latest products focus on enhancing wellbeing by bringing the calming and therapeutic properties of nature into the home. Having a masters in psychology, I wanted to bring eco psychology into the heart of the brand. For example, our natural pillow and linen spray combines eucalyptus, peppermint and Rosalina essential oils, designed to improve sleep and create a calming atmosphere. Each product in this collection reflects our belief in the restorative power of nature to help mental health.

How does greenwashing impact brands like Koala Eco?

JB: Greenwashing is a real issue that undermines trust in truly sustainable brands. At Koala Eco, we combat this by maintaining complete transparency and obtaining certifications like toxic-free, allergy-certified, vegan and cruelty-free. These certifications assure our customers that we stand by our values and deliver genuinely ecofriendly products.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. All our bottles are made from 100 per cent recycled post-consumer plastic (RPET) and we’ve introduced options like glass bottles, concentrates and refills to reduce single-use waste. Our products are biodegradable, vegan and free from harmful chemicals, ensuring that both our formulations and packaging are as kind to the planet as possible.

Why is giving back an integral part of Koala Eco’s mission?

JB: We donate a percentage of every sale to 1% for the Planet and support causes like WWF Australia and the People and Parks Foundation’s NaturePact initiative. We’re also proud to sponsor the Oceanic Society’s Critter Scholars Program, helping disadvantaged teens connect with marine life. These partnerships align with our goal of fostering a deeper connection with nature and protecting our environment—more nature feel better.

Looking back at the last eight years, is there anything you would’ve done differently?

JB: If I could change one thing, it would be to celebrate the small wins more. When you’re so focused on growing a business, it’s easy to overlook the milestones along the way. Taking a moment to acknowledge progress

is crucial for maintaining momentum and enjoying the journey.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?

JB: Resilience and self-belief are vital. I’ve learned not to take ‘no’ for an answer and to trust in the process, even when things don’t go as planned. Building a business is a journey of constant learning, but the relationships and experiences along the way make it incredibly rewarding.

What can we expect next from Koala Eco?

JB: We’re excited to continue expanding our product range with items that help people integrate nature into their daily routines. Our focus remains on creating sustainable, effective solutions that support personal wellbeing and a healthier planet. There’s so much more to come and we’re thrilled to take our community on this journey with us. G

Giftguide chats to the Aussie husband and wife team behind Everlasting Candle Co, which grew from a small startup into a beloved brand across the US and Canada and is now ready to take over Australia.

Everlasting Candle Co was born when husband and wife duo Jesse and Tamara Furgason were looking for a solution to the short lifespan and messiness of wax candles (including the smoke and soot they produced).

This inspired them to design and develop a reusable oil-burning candle made of steel, that will never melt. It quickly became an instant hit with their guests and the positive feedback and interest from friends gave them the momentum to launch Everlasting Candle Co.

“Everlasting Candle Co was founded six years ago, inspired by a simple but powerful idea: to bring the magic of a flickering flame into homes, without the mess or scent of traditional candles,” the duo says.

“As founders originally from Australia who had recently moved to Canada, we saw an opportunity to create something truly lasting—a product that blends elegance with sustainability. We wanted to offer a timeless, reusable candle that was as beautiful as it was eco-conscious.”

The candle was first launched in North America where it is now stocked in more than 900 boutiques. However, they are ready to bring their candle ‘home’.

“While the idea for Everlasting Candle Co was born after we moved to Canada, Australia is where we are originally from. Launching in North America allowed us to tap into a market eager for sustainable, reusable home décor and Canada became our new home base. Now that we’ve grown, it feels incredibly special to bring the brand full circle and launch in Australia.”

The duo’s latest range, the Jervis Collection, draws its inspiration from the natural beauty of Jervis Bay in Australia—a place close to their hearts. Each vase in the collection is named after an Australian beach

with designs like Bondi, Whitehaven and Rocky, each reflecting the serene elegance of coastal living.

These hand-blown glass vases feature textured stone finishes and clean lines, capturing the calming essence of the ocean.

The Jervis Collection blends relaxed luxury with timeless style, making it the perfect addition to any home.

As the brand sets its sights on the Australian market, it aims to light up homes with a product that combines timeless elegance, sustainability and social responsibility.

“Our partnership with the Disability Association of Canada was driven by two key goals: creating meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and assembling our candles in Canada. It’s important to us that our business not only delivers a quality product but also positively impacts the community. As we continue to grow, we’re definitely looking for similar opportunities in Australia—because giving back and supporting communities will always be a core part of Everlasting Candle Co.

“Sustainability is at the heart of Everlasting Candle Co. From our reusable candle design to eco-friendly packaging, every decision is made with the environment in mind. We believe that elegance shouldn’t come at

the cost of the planet, so we’ve focused on creating products that are beautiful, durable and sustainable. By reducing waste and choosing materials that last, we’re helping our customers make choices that benefit both their homes and the environment.

“In a world full of disposable trends, Everlasting Candle Co offers something truly unique: a product that doesn’t burn out. Our patent-pending design ensures that our candles are reusable, scent-free and clean-burning, bringing elegance without compromise. The combination of timeless design, sustainability and innovation sets us apart, offering customers an eco-conscious alternative to traditional candles that they can enjoy for years,” the duo enthuses.

While it has been an incredible journey, it didn’t come without its challenges as they had to master the ins and outs of manufacturing, logistics and marketing—all while staying true to their mission.

“The biggest lesson we’ve learned is that adaptability is key. The journey of building a business is full of unexpected twists and turns and being open to change has been crucial to our success. The world around us is constantly evolving and being able to adapt has allowed us to grow and innovate while staying true to our core values,” they add.

“Looking back, we wish we had taken bigger, bolder risks sooner. In the early days, we were overly cautious, carefully weighing every decision. Hindsight has shown us that trusting our instincts earlier could have opened more doors and helped us reach new heights faster. But every step, even the missteps, have been a valuable lesson, shaping the company and guiding us toward where we are today.

“We’re just getting started. Expect more innovative designs, a deeper commitment to sustainability and an even wider global presence. We’re excited to continue pushing boundaries, expanding our product line and creating products that elevate any space—all while staying true to the values that made Everlasting Candle Co what it is today.” G

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Baby clothing brand Isla and Mimi blends cultural heritage with contemporary design. We chat to cofounder Kira Trow about growing the business while staying true to her values of community, sustainability and craftsmanship.

Brielle dress

What inspired you to launch the business and when was it launched?

The inspiration came from my desire to blend my love for contemporary Indigenous art with a commitment to sustainability, while also offering something meaningful and beautiful for families. As a mum, I saw the need for baby clothing that not only honours cultural heritage, but is also made with organic and eco-friendly fabrics.

It was important for me to create a brand that reflects the values of conscious parenting and respect for the environment. Our first collection launch was July 2024 and since then it has grown into a space where art, culture and sustainability come together to create clothing that tells a story and makes a positive impact.

How important is community to both you and your business?

Community is everything to me and my business. Isla and Mimi was built on the values of connection—connection to culture, to family and to the people around us. As a mother and a proud Indigenous woman, I’ve always believed that when we uplift

each other, we create something far more meaningful than just a product.

For my business, community means supporting other mothers, engaging with our customers and giving back to the Indigenous communities that inspire us. Whether it’s through our upcoming give-back program, where we donate outgrown clothing to remote Indigenous communities or simply being there for families who share our values of sustainability and conscious living, community is at the heart of everything we do. It’s about building relationships, creating positive change and leaving a lasting impact together.

Does your Indigenous culture influence your designs?

My Indigenous culture is woven into every aspect of Isla and Mimi’s designs and products. Each piece reflects the stories, symbols and deep connection to the land that is so central to my heritage. Whether through hand-painted artwork or digital designs, I aim to celebrate and honour Indigenous culture in a contemporary way that resonates with modern families.

The patterns in our collections often draw inspiration from nature, traditional art forms

“What sets Isla and Mimi apart in the market is the unique combination of contemporary Indigenous art with sustainable, organic materials. Each design is carefully crafted by me or mum, drawing on the rich traditions of my Indigenous culture while giving them a modern twist that resonates with today’s families.”

and the storytelling that is such an important part of my culture. This influence is not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating products that carry meaning, telling stories of connection and sharing the beauty of my heritage with the world. For me, it’s about more than just fashion; it’s a way to keep my culture alive and share it with the next generation in a thoughtful and respectful way.

Tell us more about your latest collection

Our latest collection, Gingham Blooms, is a celebration of playful patterns and nature-inspired designs. It brings together the timeless charm of gingham with contemporary Indigenous art elements, creating pieces that feel both nostalgic and fresh. The collection includes beautiful baby rompers/dresses like the Brielle and longsleeve dresses like the Dahlia, both designed with comfort and style in mind.

We’ve incorporated earthy colourways like rose quartz and eucalyptus to reflect our connection to nature and each item

is made from organic, sustainable fabrics. This collection is all about celebrating growth, beauty and the cultural stories woven into each design, while staying true to our values of sustainability and craftsmanship.

What sets Isla and Mimi apart in the market is the unique combination of contemporary Indigenous art with sustainable, organic materials. Each design is carefully crafted by me or mum, drawing on the rich traditions of my Indigenous culture while giving them a modern twist that resonates with today’s families.

Our commitment to sustainability also makes us stand out. We use GOTS-certified organic fabrics that are gentle on both the skin and the planet, ensuring that parents can feel good about the choices they make for their children. Additionally, our give-back program, which donates outgrown clothes to remote Indigenous communities, adds a layer of purpose to everything we do. It’s this blend of cultural storytelling, eco-conscious practice and quality craftsmanship that makes Isla and Mimi truly unique in the market.

Why is sustainability important to the brand?

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Isla and Mimi. As a mother and someone deeply connected to my cultural roots, I feel a strong responsibility to protect the environment for future generations. This belief shapes every aspect of our brand—from the materials we use to the way we design and package our products.

Our designs are not only beautiful but also made to last, promoting a more mindful approach to fashion. Even our packaging is eco-friendly,

using minimal and recyclable materials to reduce waste. For us, sustainability means creating products that have a positive impact on both the environment and the communities we care about, while encouraging families to make more conscious choices.

How is it working as a mother and daughter team?

Working as a mother-daughter team has been such a rewarding experience. There’s something really special about building a business that reflects the bond between us and it has been a journey filled with support, creativity and shared values.

While we work closely together, we do have clearly defined roles that allow us to play to our strengths. I handle the creative direction, design and overall vision for the brand, while my mum brings her organisational skills to the table, managing a lot of the operational aspects.

Together, we balance each other out and make sure that Isla and Mimi stays true to its mission.

What have been some of the highlights and challenges since launching Isla and Mimi and name one thing you would’ve done differently?

There have been many highlights and challenges along the way. One of the biggest highlights has been seeing how our designs resonate with families who appreciate the cultural significance behind the artwork and the sustainable, organic fabrics we use. Being a finalist for several awards and getting recognition for our efforts to combine Indigenous art with eco-conscious practices has also been incredibly rewarding as well as winning Editors Choice for First Nations Business of the Year for she-com.

On the other hand, one of the challenges has been navigating the balance between scaling the business and staying true to our core values of sustainability and cultural integrity. As we grow, ensuring that every part of our production aligns with these principles has been a learning curve, but it’s something we’re deeply committed to. Another challenge has been balancing motherhood with running a business, but it has also been a source of motivation and inspiration in everything I do.

Understanding the manufacturing process, along with the time frames and potential delays, has been a big learning curve since launching Isla and Mimi. One thing I’ve come to realise is that sampling and production often take longer than anticipated. From creating initial samples to perfecting designs and ensuring the quality of our fabrics and prints, every step requires careful attention to detail. Delays can happen due to various factors like sourcing organic materials or finetuning the fit and feel of the garments.

The key takeaway has been the importance of building in extra time for unexpected delays and maintaining open communication with our manufacturers. It has been essential to stay patient and flexible throughout the process, knowing that the end result will be worth it because we’re committed to producing high-quality, sustainable products that align with our values.

What is the biggest lesson

you’ve learned so far?

The importance of patience and flexibility. Building a business, especially one that values sustainability and cultural integrity, takes time and there are always unexpected challenges along the way—from manufacturing delays to navigating the balance between growth and staying true to our values. I’ve learned that things won’t always go according to plan, but if you stay committed to your vision and adapt when needed, you can still move forward.

What is next for Isla & Mimi?

You can expect more beautiful, culturally inspired collections that continue to blend contemporary Indigenous art with sustainable, organic materials. We’re also excited to roll out our give-back program, where outgrown clothes in good condition will be returned to us and donated to remote Indigenous communities, extending the lifecycle of our clothing and giving back to our roots.

In addition, we’re aiming to expand our reach by acquiring a major wholesaler while continuing to grow our online presence. You can also look forward to more thoughtful collaborations, exciting new product lines and a continued commitment to creating clothing that not only looks beautiful but carries a deeper meaning and purpose. FOR THE LOVE OF PETS

Mon Petit Amour Manolo founder Crystal Lynn and her dog Manolo
Recently launched Mon Petit Amour Manolo is a luxury pet brand that is taking gifting for pets to a whole new level while at the same time giving back to the pet community.

When Crystal Lynn founded her luxury pet brand Mon Petit Amour Manolo, she envisioned a highend brand that is not only beautiful and crafted with exceptional materials and craftsmanship, but also carries a deeper meaning behind each collection.

“I have always been deeply drawn to arts and philosophy,” she says.

“Each piece tells a story, woven into its design, to remind owners of the special bond they share with their fur babies. For example, the Gold String of Fate collection offers a unique twist on the East Asian myth of the Red String of Fate, reimagined for pets—a reminder of the profound connection between souls. This is just one of many collections to come, each with its own pre-written story, emphasising love, kindness and connections bigger than ourselves.”

A major inspiration behind Mon Petit is Lynn’s little love, Manolo—the one who entrusted her with his heart and life, the Crazy Rich Asians actress says.

“Through this brand, I aimed to create a luxury label that not only represents elegance but also embodies a philanthropic mission at its core.

“I often think about a quote by Michael Caine someone once shared with me: ‘you’re your first best audience, long before anybody else hears you. So don’t be an easy audience. Keep asking for more’.

“When it comes to Manolo, I’ve always believed there’s room to elevate the pet accessory market. I often take him to beautiful places and having high-end jewellery or accessories for your furry companion adds that magic touch to complement a meticulously curated outfit.”

But beyond aesthetics, pets are family. Many owners want to express their love and devotion in every aspect of their pets’ lives. Luxury pet accessories offer a sophisticated and meaningful way to honour this connection—a way to celebrate their bond in style, she adds.

“It’s also about creating something lasting. Our products are designed to be timeless—pieces that can be cherished, passed down and appreciated, much like an heirloom. They’re investments in love, quality and the unique bond between pets and their guardians.”

Mon Petit’s latest jewellery collection features a ribbonmotif diamond necklace. The ribbon symbolises the unbreakable connection between owner and pet. This versatile piece is designed for both owners and their pets, allowing it to be interchangeable as a tennis necklace for owners, a tennis necklace for pets or even strands of pearls.

On the fashion side, the brand has introduced a chic silk scarf that’s as versatile as it is stylish. It can be used to accessorise a handbag, worn as a scarf, styled as a hair tie or even as a fashionable accessory for pets of all sizes. It also

“Speaking of leashes, we now offer multiple colour options for our 14k gold-plated leashes, inspired by the myth that every soul has a predestined connection—a sparkling thread that ties them to their soul pet. This collection celebrates that bond, blending elegance with meaningful symbolism.”

Mon Petit Amour Manolo was officially launched during Australian Fashion Week in 2024 and the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

“People love the high-quality products, exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. Our customers especially appreciate that each collection carries a meaningful story behind its design. They see our pet jewellery as a symbol of their everlasting love and commitment to their pets.”

This has also inspired many to join the brand’s Pledge Program, which promotes responsible pet guardianship and ownership—an initiative that has been widely embraced by the community.

“The Pledge Station encourages pet owners to commit to lifelong care and responsibility for their pets. It’s a symbolic yet impactful way to promote responsible pet ownership while raising awareness about pet adoption. Our goal is to reduce the number of pets in pounds and rescue centres,” Lynn says.

In addition, Mon Petit Amour Manolo donates a portion of its profits to Pound Paws, an Australian charity dedicated to

rehoming pets in pounds and rescue centres and recently the brand hosted the inaugural Puppy Cup at the Intercontinental Sydney Double Bay in support of the charity.

The Puppy Cup was created as a kinder, more compassionate alternative to traditional racing events, celebrating the joy of dogs while supporting animal welfare.

“When I asked people why they enjoy racing events, most said it was for the glamorous, fashionable atmosphere and the social aspect. So, we thought—why not create a similar experience, but without the bloodshed and animal cruelty?

“At the Puppy Cup, we encourage participants to make a playful ‘bet’ (a donation) on which dog they think will find a forever home first. At our inaugural event, we successfully re-homed four dogs and raised much-needed funds for rescue organisations.

“It’s a joyful and stylish way to bring the community together while making compassion the most fashionable trend.

We’re excited to make the Puppy Cup an annual event, spreading kindness and helping more animals in need,” she adds.

“The Puppy Cup was more than just an event; it was a pledge of commitment to pets

and their wellbeing, as well as a shining example of how fashion, art and animal advocacy can unite for a greater cause.”

While Mon Petit Amour Manolo is still a very new brand, in a short time it has already secured a stockist at The Langham and a boutique in Double Bay (Three Over Six), known for curating an exquisite collection of items from jewellery and Birkins to fine art.

“I’m incredibly proud of our small team of beautiful and kind women who have helped make this possible. We’re excited to continue expanding with new collections that bring both glamour and meaning to the everyday lives of pets and their guardians.

“With many of our customers located overseas, we’re exploring ways to bring our events to a global audience, sharing our mission and vision with pet lovers around the world. We’re also focused on strengthening our philanthropic initiatives, which will allow us to do even more for animal welfare.

“Mon Petit Amour Manolo is all about celebrating elegance, love and kindness and this is just the beginning,” Lynn enthuses. G

HOUSE OF CARDS

We chat to Living and Dining’s Lisa Saito about the company’s latest move into greeting cards from Japan.

For Living and Dining the journey began 20 years ago with designed goods from Japan that are suitable to be used every day in Australian homes and offices.

“Our first products were mini magnets by Midori, which are still a top-seller today and the adorable heart-shaped sugar cubes from a different company,” says director, Lisa Saito.

“Over the years we have grown into the wholesaler we are today with core brands plus smaller craft brands that we love to support and do so well as special items in stores.

“Our product line has diversified and now ranges from stationery to homewares and accessories. All stay true to our style of modern clean lines with pops of colour and lots of animals.”

Saito visits stores throughout Japan to find trends that are coming in and to see what is actually selling, and on her most recent visit she kept buying a certain style of greeting card with the bonus that they were all in English. Turns out they were all from the brand Ease, so she contacted them directly to represent the brand in Australia and Living and Dining will now start to sell them here.

“Many of our existing retailers have often asked us to introduce a brand of greeting cards to the Australian market and we have been looking for a brand we can work with for a long time. The challenge is the language barrier as they need to be in English only and also in our style.

“There is a healthy demand for greeting cards in Australia and we know from our retailers that their customers frequently enquire about cards. We have recently launched a novelty card from Germany and the success we have with them so far affirms

to us that we need a brand of greeting cards to complement the range alongside our existing brands.”

Ease Products greeting cards feature simple designs that suit everybody and their unique style is different to anything else in the market. There is velvet flocking, foil lettering, lots of colour, laser cutting and of course animals, Saito adds.

“The price point is also great and most will retail around $7.95 each. Our retailers have been asking us for a new style of boutique greeting card at a reasonable price point and we are confident that these cards from Ease tick all the boxes.

“We will be going deep into the brand so that there is a wide selection for buyers to choose from and we will be carrying stock as we do with all of our products across all of our brands.

“We are planning to further grow and diversify our product offering to keep our retailers interested with exciting new products. We are now in discussion with three new brands apart from Ease, which we will be releasing later in the year as well as new products from our current brands. We are particularly looking at expanding our homewares section although we will always have a soft spot for stationery.” G

WAY OF LIFE

From brain injury to booming business—meet towel-preneur Debs Brockelsby who treats every day as an adventure.

Life is short—do cool shit’. For Debs Brockelsby this motto is so much more than an inspirational bumper sticker or a plaque in her kitchen—they are words she lives by on a daily basis.

After suffering a world-altering head injury, Brockelsby has not only built a multi-milliondollar business fuelled by her thirst for adventure, STOKEDNZ, but she has become a beacon for others who also aspire to live life to the fullest.

In 2015, the Rotorua thrill-seeker was doing one of her favourite pastimes, mountain biking, when she went over the handlebars and was struck on the back of her head by her beloved bike.

An MRI discovered bruising to the brain and so began a long road to recovery for Brockelsby, who had to pull back from her dream job at Cycling New Zealand.

The Towelie is born

It was sewing that helped her navigate the darkest point in her life and the catalyst for change came when Brockelsby launched her first hooded towel poncho in 2017.

Made from super soft Turkish cotton, STOKEDNZ’s Towelies serve as both a portable changing room and wearable absorbent towel and they are named after inspirational people who Brockelsby admires.

“It was always about more than just creating a towel poncho—we made these to go on adventures,” she says.

“My accident made me realise how stoked I am to be here and with the Towelie I have created the freedom I always craved.

“When I hear from customers that their purchase inspired them to take a leap of faith in their own life, go on an incredible trip or create priceless memories with their families, that’s what lights me up more than anything else. The Towelie really is the ultimate adventure companion.”

Towelies are stocked at more than 80 retailers across Australasia (they can even be found at Scott Base in Antarctica), are on hand at private hospitals and on luxury cruise ships and have been worn by New Zealand’s sports stars at the recent Paris Olympics.

Building a value-led business

While the range has expanded to include a wide range of adventure goods and homewares, Brockelsby has remained committed to ethical and sustainable production.

“Sustainability is important because we only have one planet and if we don’t look after it, there’ll be nothing here for future generations. So I really wanted a natural fibre, something that at the end of its time, which will be a long time away, you can dig a hole and you can put back into the earth to compost.

“Everything like our packaging, our wrappers on our Towelies are made to be used multiple times and are made from a recycled cardboard. Our courier satchels

Towelies come in different colours and sizes

“The Towelie really is the ultimate adventure companion.”

are made from recycled plastic and are made here in New Zealand. Rather than compostable ones that are flown in, it’s less air miles.

“When we make our Towelies, we have our leftover fabric and we make them into hair wraps—which is one of our best-sellers—wet bags or our eclectic Towelies, which are mismatched colours. We are really big on minimising as much waste as we can.”

Brockelsby is in close contact with the families in Turkey who manufacture the signature Towelies and visits them on an annual basis and also gives back to a range of local underfunded charities and community groups.

“We’ve just recently fundraised $40,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation in New Zealand, which is phenomenal,” she enthuses.

“The reason we did that is because one of my best friends survived breast cancer and being able to change inside of one of our Towelies or our hooded towel ponchos literally changed her life. She can get changed anywhere now, which is super cool.

“The other [charity we support] is Women’s Refuge. We buy safe nights there every Black

Friday and the reason we do that is because we are all about supporting women and lifting each other up. So that provides a safe night for women and children in need.

“Why do we give back? I believe we should. I think if we all can afford to, then why don’t we? Especially when people are having a really hard time, if we can be there to help out, I think we should.”

Adventure as a way of life

Towelies recently crossed the Tasman to launch in Australia. “We’re taking over Aussie,” she laughs.

“Now, hopefully you’ll see us popping up lot more at campgrounds, swimming lessons and the beach. We’re really wanting to take over Australia more because the climate is similar to New Zealand and the feedback we’ve had so far from all the events that we’ve exhibited at has been unreal.”

Additionally, together with her partner Gary Campbell, Brockelsby has her sights set on taking the business beyond Australasia—not just the cosy, quality towels but the ethos, too.

The couple works remotely from all around the world and on any given week they may be hiking in Greece, biking in the Southern Alps, having a cup of tea with their makers in Turkey or doing business from the back of their converted campervan in New Zealand.

Always with their Towelies in tow, the pair share their adventures with their loyal customer base as a constant reminder that ‘life is short—do cool shit’.
