EDITOR’S Letter Do you take time out every day to rest? I don’t mean the hours you sleep every night (although those are important, too), but a specific time during the day to relax and unwind. It might just be 20 minutes, but ideally this time should not be used to go down a social media rabbit hole or reply to work e-mails. Most of you probably don’t feel like they have the time to ‘do nothing’, even though we all know how important it is to rest and recover. Maybe – or probably – that’s why so many wellness and recovery spaces have opened up in Australia in the past two months. From meditation studios with NapPods to Infrared sauna havens and muscle recovery experts, the next generation of self care facilities is here. We take a look at them on page 38. In this issue, we also collate the latest in women’s health treatments and products designed specifically for women’s wellbeing and pleasure (page 52). It’s so important to lift the taboo on topics like menstrual cycles and vaginal health, especially when considering how much the health of our skin depends on our hormonal balance. Lastly, we’re so excited to see several industry conferences on the horizon this year. 2021 started off with Cosmedicon, and will be followed by ROAR, Cutera University, and many more. See all the dates you need to mark in your calendar on page 20, including our very own third instalment of BEAUTY & SPA Insiders on September 27.
Since we know how important face-toface learning and networking is, we’re also bringing you an intimate breakfast event on July 5th, SPA+CLINIC Sip+Connect, held at the newly opened Boathouse in Sydney’s Rose Bay. I cannot wait to get some of you in a room together to chat and learn from one another. More information and ticket sales will be on our website soon, so make sure you subscribe to our free newsletter to stay in the loop (spaandclinic.com. au/ newsletter-signup), which is expertly curated by our new Online Editor, Jessica Frost (learn more about Jess on page 18), every week. I hope to see you at our events this year, until then, enjoy reading this issue!

The latest and greatest in the aesthetics industry, tested by the SPA+CLINIC team. Spa Wave at Crown Spa Taking time out for yourself and focusing on mindfulness has been a real focus lately, and part of this is quality of sleep. A good mattress and an early bed time helps, of course, but you can now actively help your body achieve a deeper sleep thanks to sound wave therapy. Crown Spa Sydney is offering a treatment called ‘Spa Wave’, which involves lying on a Gharieni Spa Wave treatment bed for 30 to 60 minutes while specific vibrations and binaural audio frequencies seemingly ‘travel’ through your body, allowing guests to achieve deep levels of body and mind relaxation. We felt a vibrating sensation from head to toe, like waves making their way through our bodies, and felt able to completely switch off from the rest of the world. Ongoing sessions with the Spa Wave bed has a range of benefits, as it can support the immune system, increase creativity, improve sleep quality, and assist in reducing the signs of depression and chronic pain. crownhotels.com.au
Cutera truSculpt iD There are several things that make Cutera’s lipolysis device remarkable: the comfort of the treatment, the versatile placement of the paddles making it possible to treat more than one area at the same time, but most of all, the short treatment time of only 15 minutes. We decided to get our flanks treated and were surprised how quick the whole procedure is. Including the marking up, application of the pads on our back, and the full treatment, only about 20 minutes passed and all we felt was a warm sensation where the paddles sat on our skin. Slight redness subsided within hours and we felt zero discomfort or soreness. The full result of up to 24% fat reduction can be seen at the 12-week mark, and about six weeks in, our pants feel a little more comfortable already. cutera.com.au
Matrix PDO Threads The thought of over 100 needles inserted into our face was unimaginable, but we were also excited to try the nicknamed ‘frill neck lizard treatment’. With experts on hand, we knew we didn’t have to worry as Matrix’s trainer Stacey and En Vogue’s BDM Linzi both explained the details of the treatment. The threads are made of Polydioxanone, an absorbable polymer that has been used in surgery for decades. This fibre will dissolve over a period of six months and work as a structure for our neck and submental area promoting new collagen. Stacey skilfully applied over 130 PDO mono Matrix threads to our submental, neck, delicate crows feet and jowls, and while we felt a little bit like a pin cushion, it was way more tolerable than we expected. We experienced some bruising and a bit of pain in the neck area for a week after the treatment, but eight weeks post treatment, we can see a huge improvement in skin integrity and a reduction of fine lines. envogueskin.com.au
Florabiome by Chiza Westcarr When skin expert and nutritional medicine practitioner Chiza Westcarr told us she was launching an elixir that could replace alcoholic beverages (hello, wine o’clock), she had our attention. Florabiome is made up of products that focus on modulating stress, supporting gut health and improving skin health, and we were one of the first to try the Calm Elixir, a wild fermented berry flavoured concoction, containing prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics, with adaptogenic herbs and antioxidants. Mixed with chilled sparkling water, it tastes as good as a cocktail thanks to the sweetness from the berries, but without the calories and brain fog that can come with alcoholic drinks. Chiza’s range also includes a herbal tea blend aiding with digestion and calming the nervous system, and both products are stocked professionally only, making it the perfect complement to your spa or clinic offering. glowskinandnutrition.com
BTL Emsculpt NEO Introducing the next generation of body sculpting to the BTL family, Emsculpt NEO only takes 30 minutes and while using the same electromagnetic energy as the Emsculpt, the NEO offers two beneficial energies, RF and HIFEM, giving your clients the benefits of reducing fat and building muscle in the one treatment. The paddles are applied to our abdomen and tightened with a Velcro strap. Clinical trainer Amber explains that we will feel warmth similar to a hot stone massage combined with the muscle contractions. To our surprise, we reach 42 degrees and 100% magnetic energy within ten minutes, there is minimal pain, a strong but tolerable pulse from the HIFEM component of the device, but overall, it’s not a scary treatment at all. On completion of the treatment, our stomach is very warm and a little red, it certainly feels like our muscles have been hard at work with no effort at all. btlaesthetics.com/en 12 | SPA+CLINIC

Facts & Figures Name: LOVEBEAUTY SKIN CLINIC Owner: RACHEL DIAZ Location: PERTH, WA Size: 272 m2 Treatment Rooms: 7 Staff: 11 Interior Inspiration: FEMININE, TONAL, PARED BACK TEXTURES
T
here is no doubt that the newly opened LoveBeauty Skin Clinic is all kinds of dreamy with its soft colour palette and variety of textures, but you really appreciate the space when you know that owner Rachel has an incredible personal story, from a young teen mum forced to leave school to running one of the most successful and luxurious skin clinics in Western Australia. After many hardships, Rachel opened her first LoveBeauty clinic in Shelley in 2018 and relocated to South Perth this year offering her clients a holistic skin haven. “We were fortunate to connect with the talented Interior Design team at State 28. Tash and Kate went above and beyond to assist us with creating our dream fit out, that not only represented our LoveBeauty brand but also flowed and provided optimal function as a skin clinic,” says Rachel. “Being a large space initially, I was unsure of how to style the clinic to keep everything purposeful and flowing. State 28 stepped in, they thoughtfully brought together our vision with their expert recommendations and I couldn’t be happier with the end result! Everything has its place and the decor is stunning. We had several meetings to brainstorm our ideas, optimising the layout of the building and its original character, while modernising the structure at the same time to result in a high end feel. We were very involved in the whole 16 | SPA+CLINIC
process but I couldn’t envision the end result until it was complete – I was absolutely blown away at our final viewing!” And it’s not just Rachel who was blown away, but her clients are impressed, too, taking an “endless stream of selfies flooding our Instagram,” says Rachel.“ A major goal of ours was to elevate the client experience and I believe we have successfully done so. Our clients are everything to us and we want them to feel elevated plus beautiful yet still at home when they visit for their treatments.” When it comes to picking her favourite room, Rachel says it’s the double treatment room thanks to it being “such a tranquil space with beautiful aesthetic elements such as the big white shutters that stream in natural light, high rise tiles, back lit mirror and shelving.” “I have always loved surrounding myself with attractive interiors and furnishings even back when we were a home based salon, it’s both positive and motivating,” she explains when asked how important the look and feel of her clinic is for the success of it. “The space reflects our branding, authenticity and the effort we put into our business as well as our clients. The finer details are so important, down to the bedding, the bathroom and the exteriors bringing everything together. The clinic environment sets the tone as well as the overall experience from the very beginning and throughout, follow this up with an exceptional service and you can’t go wrong!” We couldn’t agree more.

FROM LAST to first
The conference calendar for 2021 kicked off with Cosmedicon.
The Cynosure Lounge was a big hit at Cosmedicon
T
here was a palpable sense of excitement in the air when the who-is-who of the medi-aesthetics industry descended on The InterContinental Hotel in Sydney’s Double Bay in March. It had been exactly 12 months since the last physical industry conference was held in the exact same location – Cosmedicon was the last conference pre-COVID lockdown and the first one post lockdown. After weeks of uncertainty whether Cosmedicon would be able to go ahead and with several ‘snaplockdowns’ all over Australia, Organiser Michelle Kearney happily welcomed industry peers to the event. The scientific program spanned over two full days and offered valuable insights into a variety of subjects, such as practice management, the latest in body treatments, PDO Threads, photo-ageing, injectables and more. Speakers included both national and international doctors and physicians, who, with the help of technology, offered pre-recorded or live streamed educational sessions. Practical breakfast workshops supported the focussed plenary sessions. With an audience of plastic and cosmetic surgeons, dermatologists, aesthetic nurses and clinic owners, there was a lot to catch
Dr Michael Zacharia
up on after a year of Zoom-only events and people mingled and exchanged business cards in the exhibition area of the conference while also learning about the latest devices and products on the market from over 25 brands, such as Aussie Medi Tech, Venus Concept, Cutera, Cryomed, and more. Besides demo-treatments, some brands offered a true experience at their stands, such as Cynosure, who had booked out an entire room and transformed it into a business class lounge, complete with a refreshment bar and stunning flower wall for those popular selfies. The Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia (CPCA) and its President,
Dr Michael Molton, were also present and commended the conference’s set-up. “Everything was so easy. The layout of the various areas for exhibitors, unlike a lot of conferences, was really user-friendly. Those grid-style set-ups definitely have disadvantages in terms of traffic flow, but having separate areas generates ‘oh what’s over there?’ reactions so everyone gets exposure and foot traffic. The local content from our presenters was excellent, and I think it goes to show that we need more of this. There is a lot to be said for relevance to our circumstances, extensive experience and demographics in this part of the world,” Dr Molton said. No Bella Media event would be complete without a social extravaganza. Delegates and trade enjoyed their first opportunity to network in a year at the Welcome Drinks. The entertainment-packed “Studio 54” Gala Dinner hosted by High Tech Medical saw Griz Fechner introduce world-class DJ Stephen Ferris, roller girls, podium dancers and an amazing array of disco-inspired costumes. COSMEDICON 2022 will again be held at the same venue from 3-6 March, 2022. So add it to your diary now and
watch for speaker updates and education opportunities. spaandclinic.com.au | 21

ROAR Unleashed
Venus Concept and EnVogue Skin invite you to ROAR 2021
F
ollowing the success of the inaugural ROAR conference in Sydney last year, Venus Concept and EnVogue Skin will be hosting ROAR again this year – three times! ROAR Melbourne will kick off the series of conferences on May 15, followed by ROAR Sydney on June 19, and finally ROAR Gold Coast on July 24. ROAR Unleashed is destined to be even bigger and better than last year’s conference, 22 | SPA+CLINIC
all three ROAR Unleashed events this year will deliver a day full of ‘live’ education, entertainment and networking opportunities with a very impressive list of leading industry speakers including Dr Steven Liew, Dr Sean Arendse, Dr Nik Davies, and Dr Cosima Karlburger. Although the venues, guests and weather will differ, each ROAR Unleashed event will offer the same exciting schedule of learning and networking opportunities. This year at ROAR Unleashed the day will be jam packed with learning during the day, but after five o’clock there will be no more ‘talking shop’, but a strong focus on networking and celebrating coming together. After months of fires, lockdowns, border closures and now floods, ROAR wants everyone to just enjoy themselves with colleagues (old and new). A percentage of ticket sales will be donated to charity. eventbrite.com.au/e/roar-sydney-

THE 5 BEST WAYS TO SECURE FUTURE INCOME
If you’re relying on money coming in on a day by day basis, you’re missing out. Isabella Castle explains.
I
n our industry it’s hard to get a clear idea of your future income. But with some adjustments to your marketing and a little help from your salon software, you’ll be able to fill your appointment book and feel more secure with your cashflow. This allows you to make business decisions with confidence and better plan your spending. Check out these five proven ways to secure future income.
1. Secure future appointments by rebooking Rebooking usually refers to when a client books an appointment within 24 hours of their previous appointment. The sooner you rebook a client, the sooner you’ll fill your appointment book! To improve your rebooking rate, create a culture where your staff are always giving their clients a clear reason to come back and communicating the best timeline for them to return. Instead of simply asking them if they’d like to rebook, educate your clients on the best way to maintain their look. Setting a rebooking reminder will help, but offering an amazing client experience is really how you’ll get your clients to look forward to their next appointment and be excited to rebook. Don’t forget to communicate with your team the importance of rebooking and set targets to track your success.
2. Reduce your average revisit period with recurring appointments Reducing your average revisit period, even minimally, can bring in a significant amount of extra income. For example, let’s say your salon completes 95 appointments per week on average and your average revisit period is 6 weeks and 4 days. If you were to reduce your revisit period by just 4 days, you’d be booking an extra 9 appointments per week. At an average client spend of $99, that results in extra income of nearly $900 a week, or $46,000 a year! Your salon software should be able to let you book recurring appointments in advance, which is especially helpful for your loyal clients or those on a treatment plan. If your software has an appointment value report, you’ll also be able to see the value of your appointments within a given time frame, letting you measure your improvement as you book future appointments. 26 | SPA+CLINIC
3. Sell concessions Concessions are great for securing future appointments from a client. When you sell multiple services at once, you know that client will be coming back to you and not going to a competitor. Offering a small discount on services purchased as a concession is a good incentive for clients and helps increase their overall loyalty to your business.
4. Advertise your vouchers Selling vouchers is a great way to guarantee future revenue that’s often forgotten about! Remember to advertise your vouchers to existing clients as a great gift idea for their friends and family. Tell your clients about your vouchers via SMS, email, social media, and on signage in the salon. Vouchers help you secure future revenue and reach new clients. Add them to your online booking site and you’ll be able to sell vouchers at any time of the day.
5. Increase loyalty with a membership programme What does increased loyalty mean? Increased spending and more frequent visits! Let your clients become VIP members with access to special offers, treatment and gifts, and their loyalty will naturally increase. If you want to secure future income for your business try some of these methods out and see what works best for you! Once you’re able to fill your appointment book with future value, you’ll be able to get a better idea of your monthly and yearly income and make business decisions with confidence. MY PATIENT WENT VIRAL ON TIKTOK! TikTok and Reels aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Here is how to use them to your advantage.
I
t was about this time last year when most of us downloaded TikTok, and we haven’t been the same since. The video-sharing platform is now firmly in the rotation of social media apps we check daily, or for the heavily addicted; morning, noon and night. TikTok evolved from a lockdown boredom buster with its endless loop of ultra-personalised content to a powerful business tool. It’s caused major shake-ups in the media industry, with Facebook-owned Instagram launching its short-form video format, Reels, in an effort to reel people back to their app. Regardless of where your allegiance lies, both are important tools for your business to spread the word on who you are and what you care about. Here’s how to use them to your advantage.
Dr Daniel Aronov’s TikTok profile
Number’s game 79 million views and 9 million likes are almost unfathomable metrics to comprehend. They are usually exclusively reserved for the Kardashians and Anistons of the world. However, this is the type of social reach everyday people see on these apps after posting nose job before and afters. Cosmetic surgery and skincare are huge content silos on TikTok. Australian Plastic Surgeon Dr Daniel Aronov has 9 million followers at the time of printing. He gives viewers a front-row seat in the operating theatre to some of the most highly sought-after cosmetic procedures on 28 | SPA+CLINIC
the market. This type of content was traditionally reserved for the make-believe world of Grey’s Anatomy or reality TV conglomerates. Dr Aronov’s videos range from an up-close take of patients under the knife to heart-warming cosmetic transformations. They aren’t for those with a weak stomach. Think Dr Pimple Popper on steroids, but still, people can’t look away. We spoke to Dr Lanzer, who also happens to be an associate of Dr Aronov, back in October 2020 when his TikTok account reached 1 million followers. He mentioned how technology had changed the aesthetics industry for the better, and audiences are captivated by the content surgeons create. “We’re fortunate that we have so many interesting things that people don’t normally get to see,” Dr Lanzer said.
You can go viral too!

There is no reason why your clinics and practices cannot replicate this content for your social media channels. Hollie Peters is the co-founder of HER Social, a digital marketing business based on the South Coast. She says TikTok and Reels are a great way to let people know what you’re all about. “’People don’t buy goods and services. “‘People don’t buy goods and services. They buy stories, relations and magic’ is a quote I feel explains the importance of sharing personal content on your socials, and Reels are the perfect way to do this.” Reels, we have increased our following and engagement, and our sales have increased as people have felt a more personal connection with us,” she adds. All it takes is a camera, consent and an idea. Wellperforming Reels are known to boost your position in the Instagram algorithm, which increases the likelihood of more eyeballs seeing your business. If you see some ‘viral’ success on a post, Hollie says there are a few tips you can use to keep this momentum going. “Share the results of the reel to your story and tell people to check it out if they haven’t already. If they haven’t already, they will now because they will want to see what all the fuss is about.” “Ensure you are responding to everyone’s comments as this will also increase the engagement and likelihood of your Reel being seen,” Hollie said. With that in mind, the viralness of a post sometimes can’t be pinned down. However, with some persistence, creativity and a bit of luck, you’ll start to see results on your content too.
The Reel Deal Are you interested in making Reels and TikToks for your business but don’t know where to start? Here are some expert tips from the cofounder of HER Social, Hollie Peters. • G o easy on yourself – “When starting on Reels and TikTok, it is important to not be too hard on yourself as they can be tricky to become accustomed to and learn how to edit your videos. Also, don’t compare yourself to others who have been creating for longer than you.” • P ractice makes perfect – “The more you create, the more you will feel confident in showing up on camera and with editing.” • E dit in the app – “Learn how to create the TikTok/Reels in the platform you are posting it on as the Instagram algorithm punishes you for having a TikTok watermark on your Reels.” • C reate content for YOUR audience – “Speak to your target audience, not to the general population!” • G o for it – “Don’t be scared of what people you know will think, be your authentic self, and people will love you.”

Concept for a new wellness hotel in Queenstown, NZ
WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN A ‘POST-PANDEMIC SPA’ 2020 changed everything, including what makes a great spa. Ana Crawford describes her perfect recipe for a successful spa business in our new post-pandemic society.
F
or many businesses, 2020 was debilitating. However, now is the time for us to re-evaluate how we’re running our spas to enable a more sustainable future. The vital importance of wellbeing has been emphasised, and with the increased concerns around immunity and health, we must decide what we want our future industry to look like. Regionally, tourism has been identified as an industry vital to any functioning economy and governments have recognised this by boosting domestic tourism efforts and protecting businesses wherever possible. So, with the need for wellness increasing in the modern world, we’re in a great position to sustain and invest in our industry’s future. But how do new and existing spas approach their business development in 2021?
Broaden Markets And Revenue Streams Businesses in international tourist destinations were the hardest hit in 2020 (due to border closures and their complete reliance on one market). It has reminded
us that the world can change at any moment and we must be equipped. Now is the time to re-build your business by diversifying your markets and services. Whilst local stand-alone day spas rely heavily on domestic clientele, in 2019, the international market made up approximately 30% of business for key regional thermal spas. This market was cut off overnight and a shift to a more domestic (age-broad) market was vital for business survival. This significantly impacted average guest spend (the Global Wellness Institute states that wellness tourists spend 178% more than average domestic tourists), so increasing guest volume and auxiliary revenue streams are essential.
World-Class Facilities Regional research has shown that a great natural setting is no longer enough to singularly engage thermal spa consumers. The industry needs to evolve to fulfil more design-driven international expectations (and the recent surge in new and redeveloped spa facilities regionally emphasises this). Properties have begun upgrading their designs to host more experiential, modern, functional spa heat and water facilities. How can your business remain ‘design and facility competitive’ and your heat / water facilities commercially maximised?
High-Tech, Low-Touch Spaces And Technologies
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum, Turkey

Recent lockdown restrictions accentuated how vital nurturing and health is to us all. When compromised, it prompted the global spa world to reimagine their low-touch offerings.

beneath the skin and educate their clients in all aspects of health (e.g., nutrition, mental wellness, or movement). If it’s not feasible to upskill your current team, perhaps look at integrating with nearby health specialists (e.g. nutritionists, TCM consultants, mindfulness, or wellness coaches) to strengthen a ‘wider’ holistic offering.
Track And Analyse
The vitality pools at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum, Turkey
Low-touch technologies are not a new industry concept, but Mindbody’s 2021 wellness trend predictions suggest they’ll continue to grow. Salt caves, cryotherapy, floatation tanks, infrared saunas, prism light pods, IV therapy and hyperbaric chambers will increase in popularity as more consumers understand their benefits. Upcoming spa openings, e.g. Houstonian’s Trellis Spa (Texas, US) are already indicating this (with their enhanced hydrothermal areas and Gharieni detox treatment bed – using far-infrared rays to stimulate the body and plasma therapy to revitalise the skin). Now is the time to think about incorporating outdoor activities, or services geared towards nutrition, detox, immunity-building, fitness, nature, meditation, sleep, relaxation, sound-baths and energy-healing that require less therapist to guest contact.
Sustainable Design And Practices Sustainability is increasingly important to my spa clients. 2020 accentuated the need to create spaces and systems that function despite unexpected world events e.g.: • Surfaces and materials that combat viruses • Spa permaculture or custom-made products • Reduced single-use plastics and marketing materials • Spa suppliers with sustainable products and policies • Thermal water heating systems • Low-carbon materials and energy-efficient design It’s vital that businesses are genuine with their sustainable practices, and that their clients are aware of them.
Price Vs Value With a recovering economy and increased unemployment rates, consumers are inevitably more conscious of value and spending. Sensible spa rates or increased value will be key for businesses to survive and thrive in 2021. With many locals now taking domestic vacations (replacing overseas excursions), local spas need to be well-versed in what clients have come to expect of their international counterparts. Either these standards will need to be met, or spas must adapt their price and offerings accordingly. Reflect on how your business can re-package its services (with facilities and time). If feasible, make a long-term facility investment and add value to the guest experience.
To really enable business success, know your clients, and monitor results by: • Utilising comprehensive spa software systems • Ensuring booking policies offer optimal revenue security • Thoroughly recording guest data (to understand trends) • Ensuring strong team communication and information sharing (to maximise the guest experience) Strength in these areas is an investment in your future business. The more importance you place on getting this right, the easier you’re able to understand guest / member spending, booking history, product and service trends, reservation turn-away data, revenue opportunities, and financial transactions. Ultimately, this enables a business to better manage and strategise.
Ongoing Education and Up-Skilling The volume of online spa and wellness events and classes exploded in 2020. Our consumer is now far better supported to become even more well-educated about best wellness practices. This growing awareness reiterates the need for staff to constantly evolve their industry knowledge. Remain in touch with both local and international trends, invest in training that is domestically and globally relevant. This will help with long-term staff engagement and enable businesses to meet the expectations of a savvier consumer. Ana Crawford is internationally-renowned for evolving authentic, innovative and sustainable spa & wellness projects globally. Having recently been recognised as the ‘Global Consultant of the Year’ at the Hall of Wellness Awards, Ana founded her company in Hong Kong in 2010, with a second office now in New Zealand. spaevolutionconsult.com
Holistic Offerings The word ‘Spa’ derived from the Latin phrase: ‘Sanitas Per Aquas’ means ‘health through water’. While the region hosts an abundance of natural hot springs (and there’s a place for all types of spa, beauty and wellness facilities), it’s still in its adolescence when communicating a holistic link between spa (health through water), beauty and wellness to the consumer. The strength of any future business will be in integrating these key components well (relevant to their facility). The power of your technically-trained, skin and body staff is in their ability to communicate the link between the body, mind, and spirit. To address what lies

B
ack in 2018, an article in a UK glossy magazine read “Sadly notorious for its negative impact on the environment, the cosmetics industry contributes to pollution and drains natural resources in multiple ways – with our everyday actions as consumers exasperating the problem.” With reports that more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the global cosmetics industry, much of which is not recyclable, we are all part of the problem. Thankfully, there has been a shift to a skin-savvy, ecoconscious consumer and skincare professional in recent years. Ingredients certainly matter, however, considering the environmental impacts and ecological footprint of the whole life cycle of a product line, known as eco-design, is of huge significance as well as clean and green ingredients. With this revolution in consuming comes a new type of marketing, called ‘greenwashing’. According to Wikipedia - greenwashing, or ‘green sheen’, is a form of marketing spin in which green PR (green values) and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organisation’s products, aims and policies
are environmentally friendly. Greenwashing is on the rise in the skincare industry with many brands’ PR gurus wanting to tap into this new breed of eco-conscious consumer and skincare professional. So, let’s dive into sustainability. The word sustainability has definitely become a buzzword of late, so what does it actually mean? An ecosystem, a lifestyle, or a community that is sustainable is one which supports itself and its surroundings. Sustainability itself can be defined by three core elements, each of which must be carefully considered in relation to the others: • Environmental Protection • Social Development • Economic Development In the words of Pete Seegers, ”If it can’t be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled or composted - then it should be restricted, redesigned or removed from production.” At Prologic Skin Care, we care about the sustainability of our products just as much as we do about their efficacy.
A Southern Hemisphere Focus Prologic Skin Care is proudly NZ owned, operated and manufactured. It was really important to us to support local businesses and have a very strong NZ story. We used local NZ business to source all of our packaging, print our labels and boxes, do all of our design work and most importantly manufacture our product. Based in Wellington, Prologic has been formulated with a higher UV Index in mind for those located in the Southern Hemisphere. This has resulted in a skincare range that considers all factors contributing to the unique skin conditions found in the South Pacific.
Thoughtful Packaging We aspire to have as minimal impact on the environment as possible. We are proud to have FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accreditation for our boxes and labels, this means they come from a sustainable and fair-trade source. The ink used in printing our packaging is plant based, containing no chemical toxins or poisons and our labels are compostable. All packaging and bottles are 100% recyclable and consist of aluminum, glass and recyclable plastic. All of our formulations are created with both the skin and environment in mind, all ingredients are eco-friendly and do not have a negative impact on the microbiome of the skin or the environment. 34 | SPA+CLINIC
COVER STORY
Ethical Sourcing Prologic Skin Care manufactures in a certified cGMP (controlled goods manufacturing practices) laboratory. This means the laboratory has to meet standards and practices set by the World Health Organisation. One of the key aspects of this is the sourcing of raw ingredients. All ingredients need to be sourced both sustainably and ethically. Documentation needs to show exactly how the ingredient was harvested, including working and pay conditions for harvesters. Along with a sustainability planting plan to establish regrowth and to stop over-farming. It preserves biological diversity while ensuring sustainable, economic viability. Our skin and its microbiome is very complex. Less is definitely more when it comes to ingredients. According to ABC News, a woman puts an average of 168 unique chemicals on their bodies each day. Prologic Skin Care is all about education and knowing why we don’t need to put 168 unique chemicals onto our skins daily. Being able to assist the skin barrier to help itself through corneotherapeutic products, practices and education is the key to change in skin and our industry.
The Prologic Skin Care Difference: • • • • • •
NZ owned, operated, manufactured 100% recyclable packaging sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients no animal cruelty supporting charitable causes based on corneotherapy
Moral Conscience Prologic prides itself on ethical processes, a 100% vegan skincare product that stands behind absolutely no animal testing. Prologic is proudly ‘no animal cruelty’ certified, which is quite different to ‘not tested on animals’. Not tested on animals means the final manufactured product is not tested on animals. No animal cruelty means at no stage have the individual ingredients or final product been tested on animals. Because we formulate in a cGMP laboratory we have access to documentation that follows each ingredient right back from the time of harvest and each stage until it reaches the laboratory. This means we absolutely know that no ingredients have ever been tested on animals. So how do we test our products? We test them on consenting humans! Moreover, we work with suppliers that also believe in being ethical companies, doing the best by their brand, business, staff and customers. “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly,” said Anne Marie Bonneau.
Charitable Giving We choose to support an amazing Australian organisation called Kangala Rescue. Born out of the devastating 2019/20 bush fires, this family are located on the beautiful Kangaroo Island. There was no rescue organisation on the island as Lisa and her husband drove her teenagers out of the fire storm to safety – they realised many of the animals had given up and were not fleeing as 50 per cent of this island was burnt to the ground. They got their kids to safety and with other adults returned and rescued 250 animals in their first days. Their home and property is now the islands rescue, funded purely through donations, and we are proud to contribute to this wonderful cause.
Corneotherapy And Barrier Function Prologic Skin Care is strongly influenced by current research into corneobiology and by applying the corneotherapeutic principles of repairing and maintaining the skin’s natural barrier function. Let’s remind ourselves about this vital barrier function. Your skin has a delicate and essential layer called ‘the barrier’, also known as your hydrolipidic film or acid mantle. It is a naturally secreted, thin, protective film that covers your skin and is made up of oils, fatty acids, lactic acid, amino acids and our skin’s own natural moisturising factor. This barrier is the skin’s very own defence mechanism against moisture loss and bad, foreign bacteria. When your barrier is healthy, your skin looks alive, fresh and radiant – with no signs of dehydration. It has an even texture; your pores are refined and you don’t suffer from the notorious ‘sensitivity’ which seems to be at epidemic proportions out there. Breakouts may occur; however, they seem to disappear rapidly and without scarring. The barrier waterproofs your skin and helps the skin cells remain tight and flat (like roof shingles), it protects you from the elements like wind, cold and water, also making
it harder for bacteria and other microbes to get into your skin. Working on strengthening the skin barrier defence system and balancing epidermal lipids, Prologic focuses on building strong foundations first, then slowly targeting specific skin concerns. By using ingredients that imitate the processes found in young healthy skin, Prologic delivers optimal results using natural skin identical ingredients to preserve the epidermis and the skin barrier defence system. Preserving the epidermis means protecting and strengthening the skin’s most important cells resulting in strong, healthy and youthful skin.
You Can Have It All As a skincare professional, you can now have it all: A product range which has been professionally formulated without harsh or unnecessary additives to ensure every ingredient has a direct affect on the skin’s cells, as well as a range which takes business and sustainability ethics to a whole new level of transparency! It is my very strong opinion - sustainability has to become task critical for the beauty industry and should be best practice for any innovator or creator. We are all able to drive change with our purchasing habits and exercising conscious consumerism. We can all vote each day for the kind of world we want to live in tomorrow. Your spending habits are arguably the single biggest weapon in the fight for the sustainability of our planet. Small incremental but collective improvements in the way we consume can change the game. And right now, we need change more than ever! For more information, visit prologicskincare.com.au

MYND This unique meditation and nap studio can be found in the middle of bustling Barangaroo in Sydney and offers city workers a balance to their stressful jobs. Founders James Harris and Sam Thornton were two sleep-deprived city workers who quit the corporate life to launch the wellness venture after both experiencing the rewarding benefits of meditation. “People realise that it’s just as important, if not more important, to look after their mental health as well as their physical health,” James says. Clients pay a weekly membership to access unlimited mediation classes or drop in on a payas-you-go basis. MYND studio runs over 20 pre-recorded meditation classes per day rather than focusing on the three peak times. The duo worked with meditation teacher Janelle Pickles, accredited by the Meditation Association of Australia, to curate the program, comprising of seven varied practises designed to be energising, motivating or relaxing depending on the time of the day. MYND Studios is also home to two state-of-the-art NapPods, which guide you into a restful 20-minute nap to recharge your batteries.
Cryospa Cryospa has made a name for itself as a one-stop shop for all your recovery and wellness needs on the lower North Shore offering a wide range of recovery treatments, such as Cryo, infrared sauna, Normatec and Sydney’s only Himalayan Salt room. “For 3 years we have strived to ensure that anyone that walks through our doors to try out our treatments leaves feeling better than they did when they arrived,” says Cryospa Director, Mitchell Diamond. The clinic has seen a surge in people coming regularly to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. I think recovery treatments have been gaining popularity as the benefits of them are becoming more mainstream. With podcasts becoming so popular along with athletes and celebrities utilising them more, it has made people more aware of what treatments are out there and available. I also believe [the pandemic] has made people take their health and immune system more seriously,” he says. Proving this theory is that Cryospa’s clientele morphed from mainly athletes to the majority being busy working mums who are looking for an opportunity to make time for themselves at Cryospa and ‘recover’ from everyday life. The infrared sauna, which includes a TV with all kinds of streaming service apps, is the business’ most popular treatment, “so much so, we recently needed to purchase a second one to keep up with the demand,” says Mitchell.
Slow House What could be deemed Bondi’s most Instagrammable wellness space, Slow House opened its doors in February this year and has welcomed a variety of guests ranging from busy working mums to regular gym-goers and those who just want to make some time for themselves. The all white space (think Santorini meets Byron Bay) is as tranquil as it is inviting, offering generously sized private infrared sauna rooms as well as ice baths and Omnilux sessions. Founder Natasha wanted to create a ‘selfserve’ wellness space that makes it easy for guests to dedicate some time to their health and wellbeing each week. All you need is your swimmers and you’re good to go. After your wellness session, enjoy a cup of tea and browse the curated retail offering including body and face oils, fragrances, and supplements. 40 | SPA+CLINIC

Widely regarded as an effective method to increase blood flow, it can aid cardiovascular efficiency, sports recovery and more. Good circulation is vital to good health. It is how the blood delivers the oxygen, nutrients, antibodies and other materials that cells need to support, repair and protect the body. It also takes away waste, preventing the build-up of harmful substances over time. It is a safe, non-surgical treatment, and is a comfortable and relaxing experience. To date, more than 300 studies have been published showing the long-lasting benefits of Renew™ ECP Therapy. Renew™ ECP Therapy incorporates a full and detailed health assessment to deliver a tailored program that meets the client’s requirements. After an initial health assessment has been completed, you and your client will select one of the programs most suited to their needs. Reported benefits to overall health include increased energy levels, exercise tolerance and vitality. Even fit and healthy people can benefit from ECP Therapy, as was the case with Eloise. “I initially investigated ECP for its recognised benefits and ability to improve cardiovascular health. I'd never ask someone to use something I haven't directly experienced, but being a very healthy and fit person wasn't sure what, if any, benefits I’d experience. I'm extremely happy that I persevered with sessions as I believe they’ve had a direct impact on my health and looks, evidenced by a friends recent comment that I ”look as if I haven't aged a day in over 10 years”.

POST-SURGICAL
Recovery
Pre- and post-op care for cosmetic surgery is just as important as the procedure itself to facilitate fast healing and optimised results. We explore the best post-treatment recovery options.
D
r Jayson Oates from Academy Face & Body knows the importance of Post-op care, which “begins right from the initial consultation,” he says. “Setting the right expectations, getting the patient familiar with the post-op experience – discomfort, dressing, bruising, drains…. the fewer surprises, the better. When someone goes home from either our in-house licensed theatre or external hospital we want them to have everything they need in terms of medications, nasal sprays, dressings etc so they don’t have to go to a pharmacy to get anything,” he explains. “We see most people the day after surgery to ensure they don’t have Dr Jayson Oates excessive bruising or anything else we need to worry about. Keeping close contact and allowing the patient to be able to get in contact with us (we have 24/7 phone contact set up), keeps the patients reassured. I always tell them it is better to contact us and be told that what they have is not a problem rather than have a problem and feel too shy to call us.” While information and reassuring words are a crucial part of the recovery process, there are also treatments that help the body heal. “We use LED as a routine after most surgeries. It is something we have in the office and we are keen to use it. Patients seems to feel it helps with redness and swelling. For some surgeries I use a medication that stabilises blood clots and reduces bruising. For some procedures, especially liposuction, Low Intensity Shock Wave Therapy is very useful in mobilising swelling and moving the fluid more quickly. It is not electric shocks but a physiotherapy device that I call ‘the thumper’. Once a patient has had it they know exactly why I call it that. After most ‘anti-ageing’ surgeries I get the patient to see one of our dermal therapists. They are very Cynosure Z Wave Pro 44 | SPA+CLINIC

WELLNESS & IMMUNE HEALTH The Global Wellness Institute predicts our immune health will play an important role in the future of wellness.
O
ne aspect of the future of wellness, according to the Global Wellness Institute, lies in approaches that lead to immunostabilisation and immuno-balance. Most are the untrendy pillars of wellness: exercise, sleep and stress-reduction. But with new research and lessons from COVID-19, some things become far more important, and we will see more experimentation in the following three fields: Intermittent fasting: Research mounts that intermittent fasting can dramatically “flip the switch” on immune system regeneration. Studies also indicate that daily fasting windows and special “fast-mimicking” diets show significant, positive immune impact, but multi-day, water-only fasts hurt immune response. “Positive stress” experiences: Human immune systems evolved around constant, short stresses (how we survived), but now we sit at desks with temperatures always tuned to 72 degrees. Voluntary “positive stress” experiences—hot and cold; fasting; types of breathwork; highintensity, short bursts of exercise—are proven to have a short-term, positive immune effect. All will rise in wellness, from the Wim Hof Method to wild swimming to home infrared saunas. The first human clinical trial testing on whether regular positive stress experiences have a long-term impact on our cellular biology and the immune system is coming soon. “Immunity travel”: Wellness resorts rushed to immunity programs when the pandemic hit: so many add-on, “immune-boosting” menus and IV drips. Now destinations will go deeper, more medical, and revolve around interventions that matter more: from in-depth metabolic and immune profile testing to gut health and personalized nutrition—such as Germany’s Buchinger Wilhelmi. Biohacking centers, such as BelleCell in London, are deploying futuristic tech, such as IV laser therapy and hyperbaric oxygen chambers, to target “cellular bioresilience” and the immune system. A wellness industry newly focused on the hard—and fast-evolving— immune science could extend and save many lives. And help its own reputation along the way.
“...with new research and lessons from COVID-19, some things become far more important, and we will see more experimentation...”

WELLNESS & HEALTHCARE
unite!
As we quickly realise that one can’t exist without the other, what is the future of wellness in the medical industry?
W
ellness has cemented itself as an integral and essential part of keeping communities healthy. However, for wellness to function within the healthcare system, it needs to have the supportive infrastructure, and this is a change that starts from the ground up.
Building the future Founder of UNITA, Rob Rowe, is literally building the future of wellness. His business specialises in the design and fit-out of medical and health spaces but with a difference. UNITA’s designs take into consideration things like biophilic elements and the overall experience, from comfort in the physical space through to digital touch points. Simply, the spaces reflect care not medicine. 48 | SPA+CLINIC
“We wouldn’t work in this sector if we didn’t see things differently. There wouldn’t be a reason for us to do it otherwise,” he said. Rob has travelled the world to see that the medical industry, categorically, is an under-designed space. A copy and paste design that consists of plastic chairs and fluorescent lighting. It isn’t exactly the most hospitable environment to wait for sometimes life-altering news. With previous experience working in hospitality, retail and residential sectors to deliver innovative solutions, Rob wanted to test that theory and thinking on the health market. “You don’t want a patient to feel like a patient in a health clinic. You want them to feel like they are somewhere they are going to get better. Obviously, the health sector is more concerned with
WELLNESS

solutions to health problems. Still, I think the experience only makes the customer feel better and that it’s all part of a holistic experience,” Rob said. This approach is right on trend. In fact, the Global Wellness Trend Report listed ‘spiritual and numinous moments in architecture’ as a key trend for 2021. It forecasts a shift from flashy interiors to spaces that touch and nourish the soul.
Wellness hubs Creating medical spaces that foster wellness extends beyond just making it look pretty. Although, that is a considered factor in some projects, especially in the field of plastics. “If you take a look at some of the plastic surgery clinics, this is an industry based on precision. You’re using a scalpel. You’re enhancing someone’s appearance. If you’re in the game of delivering beautiful and precise faces, why not marry that into a space that has the same considerations in the joinery, floor and finishes,” he said. In other medical settings, the designs are all-encompassing. UNITA recently completed a design with Eden Health Retreat, where they merged both health and wellness. Rob believes wellness hubs, places that facilitate traditional therapies like doctors and pharmacy and other zones for mental health activities and coaching, are the infrastructure of the future. “You can’t put that into every single community in Australia, but you certainly can in some of the demographics that support that type of infrastructure. We want to be a part of that future change. We are not really interested in the white and green sterile clinics that most of the other people have been doing,” he adds.
Making good health accessible While UNITA hasn’t done white paper research, it has received positive feedback from its clients on the shift. Those practices are constantly acknowledged for the pleasurable experience they are offering their patients, Rob says. “At the end of the day, if you’re a doctor, dentist or any specialist, what are you selling other than the doctor? You’re basically selling an experience,” he said. And while the healthcare industry plays an inextricable role in keeping our society healthy, it’s also a business that makes money. One that has been built on cross-pollinating patients, and wellness and health hubs make this process simpler. Imagine only having to travel two doors down instead of two suburbs over to see an allied health specialist after an initial consult with a GP? “I believe that to give someone a central wellness and health hub, that they can facilitate most of their health and wellbeing requirements in one location, is quite critical. That’s part of the experience of making good health accessible,” Rob said.
Why not sooner? But if this is the future of healthcare, why don’t we see more places like this? Rob says medical facilities have retained the same clinical look for many years because the players offering design and construction in the market are not interested in changing their approach. It also costs more too. Say history states it only costs X amount to build a doctor’s surgery, but this new method requires that same amount plus a little more. It’s uncharted territory, and you’re still paying the same rent as the person who spent the standard rate. “Like anything, in the beginning, I think it sometimes costs a bit more to be a part of the change, but over time it always becomes more economical for the broader community,” he said.
Stronger together
The Sharp Clinic, South Brisbane
Last year’s events brought into hyper-focus that there is much more to wellness than being disease-free. As we move forward in a postpandemic world, we can expect to see the wellness and healthcare spaces merge because they are ultimately stronger together. “This sector is always evolving, and there are some very intelligent people sitting inside those facilities and managing the care that is required. I think it’s more about getting the mix right, and those traditional methods are being challenged. There are more holistic ways to solve health’s problems. The smart money is on having a happy blend of holistic, wellness, allied and specialised care combined in one precinct to give people a more holistic approach to their wellbeing. There are some pretty fearless people out there who are doing this, and they are getting some fantastic results,” Rob finishes. spaandclinic.com.au | 49

WHY YOUR CLIENTS NEED A NUTRITIONIST You know those clients whose skin you may have improved, but never really fixed the underlying cause of their problems? They may need the help of Clinical Nutritionist Dominique Salemi.
W
e all know the importance of a healthy lifestyle for clear, radiant skin, but just how influential the state of our gut can be on our skin is largely underestimated. Dermal Clinician Dominique Salemi felt she couldn’t do enough for many of her clients’ skins and so went to learn more about the actual causes of skin conditions such as acne or rosacea, where topical products aren’t enough. “My interest in nutrition as a dermal therapist began after seeing many of my clients experience re-occurring skin issues, despite being on high quality skincare and following corrective skin treatments,” Dominique says. “Seeing certain clients return after completing their courses of skin treatments, only to have the same treatment again as their skin was driven by ‘hormonal imbalances’, or ‘internal issues’ made me wonder what was driving these issues, and how can we truly treat and restore these conditions internally to help support internal health, and truly achieve genuine results externally.” 50 | SPA+CLINIC
The prevalence of gut issues Dominique says a whopping 70-80 per cent of her clients had internal issues such as hormonal imbalances or gut problems that were causing skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation, redness, and a reduced structural integrity of the skin. “I began to learn more about holistic skin analysis, and particularly Chinese facial reading, and how a particular flare up or issue with the skin may be reflective of an issue or organ that may need supporting internally. I was fascinated learning the role nutrition played in skin health and how our skin is actually a reflection of our internal health. This inspired me to want to learn more about how we could improve our skin health, through our internal health, to truly improve and restore our skin, from the inside out.” “By far the most common condition many of my clients who seek consultation is for breakouts and acne. This varies in ages from teenagers, to young women in their twenties and even later onset ‘adult’ acne, as well as pigmentation and acne scarring. Quite often the triggers for acne is due to hormonal imbalances, as well as gut health. Our hormones play such a key role when it comes to supporting our skin health, and as we go through different ages, and hormonal cycle changes, if we are not supporting these properly, it often leads to inflammation driving these conditions.” “Gut health is another huge driver, as well as the occurrence of dysbiosis (an

increase in poor bacteria) leading to inflammation in the gut, and other digestive issues like foods not broken down or absorbed properly, increasing inflammation and further driving breakouts on the skin. Nutritional deficiencies, or lacking in certain key nutrients, particularly zinc, iron and vitamin C is another trigger for skin conditions, particularly in younger girls.”
Holistic skin analyses Dominique founded Skin Nutrition Co, an online business to empower and help people achieve healthy skin form the inside out. Clients can book a one-on-one virtual consultation with Dominique, during which she finds out everything she needs to know about the person’s lifestyle, diet, and medical history to write a report on her findings along with suggestions for changes every client can implement that will aid the recovery of their skin. More than that, Dominique urges clinicians to educate themselves on nutrition and gut health so they too can deliver a holistic skin consultation for their clients. “I offer training to dermal/skin therapists on holistic skin
analysis, to develop their understanding on how to utilise nutrition to help improve and support optimal skin health and skin healing. I provide talks and workshops on skin offering knowledge and guidance on how nutrition can be incorporated alongside topical care to provide support to their clients, as well as gain a deeper understanding of what is going on internally, and how this may be impacting the skin conditions they are treating,” explains Dominique. The clinical nutritionist also likes to work alongside clinics to help them achieve better outcomes for their patients. “I can help assist them to facilitate the results their clients will achieve for their skin and overall health for the long term. The client can achieve genuine results, helping to achieve a complete inside out approach to their skin. I aim to really get to the root cause and look at what is driving their skin condition, so we can work out how to restore what is going on internally, whilst they are being provided with support topically to help correct and restore the health of their skin. I believe working alongside a nutritionist really helps to provide the clients benefits and results on a deeper level, as we are working from the inside out, so the client can achieve complete results, topically and internally.” “This also helps to build up trust and rapport with their clients, as they can see that you really are dedicated to helping them reach their goals, and supporting their skin is a genuine priority you hold for the client.” We couldn’t agree more. 021 has been the year for many women to find their voices and spread awareness on sexism and inequality. Women are no longer afraid to put their needs first, including their vaginal health and sexual pleasure. Holistic Sexuality Coach and Feminine Wellbeing Educator, Melissa Vranjes, says we still have a long way to go when it comes to women being educated about their own bodies. “There is a lot of misinformation around women’s health and bodies in general and a lot of women ask the question ‘why wasn’t this taught at school?’,” says the spokesperson for vaginal care provider Kolorex. However, in recent years, she has seen a change happen. “Women are openly talking about their vaginas, their menstrual cycles and finding empowerment in doing so. I believe that is because we are slowly opening up about previously ‘taboo’ topics around the female body, and cheering each other on in the process.”
to focus energy emission precisely on three different tissue layers using heat to stimulate subdermal collagen production and tissue remodelling, whilst leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Through the DQRF TM technology, EVATM stimulates the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid and thus naturally rejuvenates and restores the normal physiology of the tissue. No anaesthesia is needed and there is no downtime. EVATM is the only device on the market with the ability to incorporate hyaluronic acid for more immediate results. The device treats vulvo-vaginal atrophy, symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), vaginal laxity, pain or reduced sensitivity during sexual intercourse, mild stress, urinary incontinence, as well as vulvar rejuvenation.
“Women are openly talking about their vaginas, their menstrual cycles and finding empowerment in doing so.” “The main concerns women come to see me about are feeling disconnected to their femininity, vaginas, sexuality and cycles. They are craving to learn how they can optimise their health through body literacy. There is a deep desire in almost every client to feel alive and to thrive in their feminine bodies. The only thing lacking is education and tools to connect to this part of their bodies.” Once women have found the information they’ve been craving, there is almost nothing that can’t be treated or improved. From vaginal dryness to laxity and incontinence, the latest generation of women’s health devices offers a range of quick and easy treatments that can make a world of difference for women.

Incontinence is still one of the most taboo subjects across women’s health. Statistics show that up to 37% of females suffer from urinary incontinence and bladder leakage. The EMSELLA uses HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology to stimulate entire pelvic floor muscles to mimic over 11,000 pelvic floor supramaximal contractions per less than 30-minute session. The stimulation leads to regained control over pelvic floor muscles and bladder. The treatment is completely painless and non-invasive. The patient simply sits fully clothed in the BTL EMSELLA chair for 28 minutes for six individual sessions, across three weeks. No surgery, completely painless, no downtime, stay fully clothed and non-invasive. And with a 95% satisfaction rate, the patient’s quality of life
dramatically changes. Two out of three of the treated patients reduced or totally eliminated the use of hygienic pads.
Candela CO2RE Intima The CO2RE Intima laser treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that delivers gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall that stimulates a healing response and enhances moisture levels in the vaginal canal. This results in the remodelling of the tissue fibres, thereby restoring flexibility and shape. The system’s customised handpieces are designed to treat the introitus, vaginal canal, and external genitalia. With 360 degree rotation capability for ease of use on tissue along the vaginal canal, and sterile for every patient, the single-use handpieces are guaranteed ready to use. CO2 technology has been used in gynecology for benign and pre-malignant vulvar and cervical dysplasia since 1973. The CO2RE system offers customisable treatment capability with handpiece and lens combinations to provide physician control. Compared to traditional surgical methods, it provides greater precision, cleaner incision, and less scarring. A series of up to three treatments are typically done. The treatment lasts about 10-15 minutes, and a once-a-year single treatment is recommended to maintain symptom relief. This can be done quickly and conveniently during women’s annual checkup. Many patients have reported that they experience relief right away after the treatment.

Menopause Relief
Hot, Hot, Hot
As more women talk openly about menopause and the related symptoms, such as hot flashes and weight gain, more treatments become available to alleviate them. Many menopausal women complain about difficulty sleeping along with early wake times and interrupted sleep patterns, and this might be due to the reduction of melatonin as we age. Different colour lights can have an impact on melatonin production, with blue light lowering it and red light increasing it. Using a red light LED mask before going to bed therefore helps a lot of women go to sleep. Aduro Australia Personal LED Mask offers 11 unique treatment settings using eight individual colour light wavelengths for both primary and secondary skin concerns. Apart from the obvious youthful glow and reduction in wrinkles, age spot, redness, the TGA Listed Medical grade Personal LED mask can help women get the well deserved beauty sleep they deserve.

Melanie Grant stocks several European skincare brands, among them Biologique Recherche, Royal Fern, and Augustinus Bader. The German skincare brand in the famous blue bottle exploded onto the scene in 2018 and quickly made a name for itself as offering one of the best moisturisers to ever have graced our dehydrated and stressed out skins. “I recommend the product to our clients because it promotes a healthy, fortified complexion, which is important and the key to beautiful skin,” says Melanie about The Rich Cream. The celebrity facialist is one of the brand’s very few Australian stockists and has worked closely with the Founder, Prof Augustinus Bader, himself throughout the years. Now, she is the exclusive skin specialist in all of Australia to offer the Augustinus Bader Facial, and I was lucky enough to experience it. The Melanie Grant x Augustinus Bader Facial is an innovative treatment designed to promote the skin’s own regeneration. It looks to firm, tone and refine clients’ complexions using the remarkable Augustinus Bader product range. As with every Melanie Grant experience, each treatment is customised to the individual’s skin. 58 | SPA+CLINIC

Walking into Melanie Grant Double Bay Skin Studio is like walking into a fashion and interior lover’s dream. Oversized prints of Chanel models including Kate Moss adorn the white walls while a long, cream coloured bouclé lounge invites you to sit down and stare at a huge black shelf full of skincare products I wish I had in my bathroom cabinet. One thing I immediately notice is how friendly and warm her team are. I am greeted with big smiles and professional, but genuine small talk before I am guided into the treatment room, which is quite large and, of course, very stylish. I lay down on the comfortable curved treatment bed and am covered by a beautiful linen blanket while listening to modern upbeat, but at the same time relaxing music. Everything at Melanie Grant has a cosmopolitan feel. You can tell she has travelled the world and appreciates high-quality finishes and understated luxury, both when it comes to interior and skincare. My skin is double cleansed before Melanie uses a gentle peel on my skin to prepare it for the rest of the treatment and all the wonderful Augustinus Bader products I am about to experience. She then treats me to one of the most thorough and firm facial massages I have ever experienced. Using her knuckles and a good amount of pressure, she kneads seemingly every muscle I have in my face using the Augustinus Bader Face Oil, trying to get my cheeks to release tension. It’s oddly relaxing and I can almost feel my skin tighten and my facial contours improve. After the massage, which also includes my neck and shoulders, Melanie puts me under the Dermalux LED light for about 20 minutes, something she says she swears by for almost all of her clients. While I bask in the red light, I am treated to an arm and hand massage, which feels divine and nearly puts me to sleep. Finally, Melanie applies the holy grail of moisturisers, the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream, to my face and doesn’t forget about my lips, which enjoy a generous layer of Augustinus Bader’s lip balm. Deeply hydrated, glowing, and sculpted I float back to reception, feeling like a brand new woman. melaniegrant.com

THE NECK IS THE NEW FACE The neck used to get quite neglected in people’s beauty regimes, but it has recently become the main focus for aesthetic professionals and patients alike.
I
f you’re a Millenial, chances are you remember being a teenager and putting on a Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation that was nowhere near your natural shade. Not only that, but you probably also had no idea about blending and therefore walked around with a face that looked two or three shades darker than your neck. This fond memory of the late 90s is a pretty good representation of what a lot of people still do: spend money, time, and effort on their faces, but completely neglect their necks and decolletages. This is why the neck is usually a pretty good tell-tale sign of someone’s age – some people’s faces look 15 years younger than their necks thanks to anti-wrinkle and filler injections, active skincare and flattering makeup. Slowly but surely, we are catching up on the importance of including the neck and dec in our regular self-care regimes, which is apparent by the abundance of treatments out there that are gaining in popularity. From HIFU to LED and skincare, there is no reason why our necks should be ageing faster than the skin on our face. For practitioners, this is nothing new, but it might be worth checking in on your team to see if they educate their patients about available neck treatments – after all, it’s a
perfect opportunity to increase average spend while also introducing clients to new offerings. We’ve collated the latest in neck and décolletage aesthetic treatments.
PDO Threads Matrix PDO Threads are a method of tightening and thickening skin. They are a type of single PDO filament, are smooth and made from Polydioxanone. Matrix PDO Threads are inserted into the sub dermal level of the skin, in a mesh-like pattern, to promote the creation of new collagen. The threads activate collagen synthesis which produces a gradual skin thickening, skin tightening and rejuvenation effect. The threads become a support structure that allows collagen production to increase. For the neck, mono threads are the ideal solution as practitioners can treat both the necklace lines and skin laxity, whereas most other treatments used for the neck will only treat one of those issues or the other, not both. By using mono threads in the neck, practitioners can create tighter skin and a more defined jawline (through a mesh framework of mono threads) and the use of double screw threads can help to fill out any necklace lines.

Leave me WITH(OUT) A SCAR From energy-based devices to surgical revision, the experts weigh in on how to approach scar management.
T
here are a few things in life that have a lasting impact. That time you weren’t invited to that party, the heartbreak of your first love, and scars. Luckily, some of those things are more easily treated than others. Scars are a part of life. They show our accidents, our growth and our triumphs. However, not everyone sees their acne scarring or c-section mark as a badge of honour, and that’s okay too. If you have patients wanting to lessen the appearance of scars, here are their options.
What is a scar? Scaring is the natural and inevitable outcome of replacing lost or damaged tissue. There are several different types that range from normal fine-line scars that fade over time through to sunken acne scars or raised keloid scars that may require further management. Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Naveen Somia says most scars heal well, but certain risk factors predispose patients to bad scar formation. These include a darker skin tone, the scar’s location, the incidence of infection, and sun exposure when the scar is fresh. “There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to scarring, and appropriate treatment varies from scar to scar,” Dr Somia said.
What are the options? “There is a role for all therapies when it comes to scar management. If indicated, some scars are best treated by laser and some by injection of steroids, surgery, radiotherapy or sometimes even a combination of the above,” Dr Somia said. Beyond topical over-the-counter creams or injections, an energy-based device is a next step in minimising the appearance of bothersome scars. Kylie Rowe is the Corporate Account Manager at Cynosure Australia, who have many different devices to treat scars. Her favourite is the ICON platform, which has over 80 peer-reviewed clinical papers and a long history with scar management. “The ICON platform has applications to treat both the colour and textural aspects of a scar. To improve textural aspects, we use selected laser wavelength that has proven to increase the collagen and elastin quantity in the area, which will improve the appearance,” Kylie said.
How does it work? It depends on the decided treatment plan as there are ablative, non-ablative and fractional applications 70 | SPA+CLINIC
through the ICON platform. Ablative lasers are more invasive but are very effective in drastically minimising the appearance of certain scars. Fractional non-ablative laser is often desired as there is less downtime, says Kylie. “Fractional photothermolysis creates columns of thermal damage surrounding healthy tissue. The thermal damage is a microscopic wound that then allows the skins wound healing response mechanisms to take place, eventually forming new collagen fibres. This process aims to replace the lack of collagen in the scar region,” she said.
What next?
Not all scars can be effectively managed through energy-based devices, nor is everyone eligible for these treatment methods. In some circumstances, a surgical scar revision is one of the only options. “Surgery should only be considered as a method of scar management when the clinical features and biological behaviour of the scar indicates that surgery is the best or only option. To consider surgery as a form of scar management, the benefits of the surgery must heavily outweigh the risks,” Dr Somia said. Surgical scar revision is usually a more viable option for hypertrophic scars, keloid scars, contractures and significant facial scars. The desired outcome of surgery isn’t always purely aesthetic. The aim might be to ease discomfort and increase mobility. “A good plastic surgeon will keep scar consideration in mind throughout the surgery and will use advanced techniques and appropriate materials to minimise scarring risks,” Dr Somia said. Dr Somia wants to debunk the myth that bad scarring is inevitable, and that every scar will need treatment. It varies from case to case, with most fading over time. In the instances where this doesn’t happen, there are Cynosure ICON always options.

PUTTING SALONS AND CLINICS FIRST Ultraderm has been a trusted Aussie-made skincare brand for over 20 years. We chat to founder Pauline Valle on how she keeps her professional brand partners front of mind. What sets you apart from other skincare brands? I created Ultraderm in 2009, and it is and has been Australian manufactured and owned. Ultraderm customers, and our partner salons, are at the forefront of everything we do. With over 23 years’ experience in the beauty industry, I’ve worked with hundreds, if not thousands of salon owners, and I’ve listened to what they kept telling me: “We want affordable skincare with quality products that will support our industry and put salons first”. Ultraderm is a comprehensive range that contains active proven ingredients which are beneficial in making a positive improvement to skin for conditions like rosacea, acne, stretchmarks, pigmentation and scarring. Products for both professional and retail, only using the latest cosmeceutical technology and highest quality of active ingredients.” In 2017, Ultraderm was appointed Australian distributor of Rezenerate, a modality that uses cutting-edge nano-technology for the best facial ever. Rezenerate allows for increased efficacy of the products they currently use. Whether your facial is targeting blemishes, fine lines, uneven skin tone etc., using the Rezenerate
NanoFacial System will give the short and long term improvements your clients seek without the pain and invasiveness of a costly and risky medical procedure.
What kind of support can stockists expect from Ultraderm? Ultraderm products give amazing results. The brand was built around meeting the needs of the salon owners and therapists who support the brand. It offers a great price point, customisable opening orders, annual marketing planner (with regular promotional offers and discounts), a customer loyalty rewards program, staff rewards, monthly newsletters, easy to use products that retail well, shareable social media, training workbooks, training on USB, online training, in-house workshops both for product training and sales techniques with Zoom training offered at any time.
How many products are in the Ultraderm range? There are 29 retail products, five retail kits, seven levels of Professional Skin Peels, five Salon only treatment masks and the bespoke NanoFacial treatment system, Rezenerate.
What type of clinic would be a good fit for the brand? Ultraderm works well across the salon spectrum from successful sole operators to larger skin clinics. It’s imperative that therapists regularly undertake continuing education as it is empowering and gives them confidence to excel at retailing and recommending the best treatment and product options to achieve results for their clients and maximise their retail sales.
What is planned for the rest of the year? After a period of salon closures and restrictions, we are looking forward to face to face contact with our salon partners and getting together and networking with current and prospective business partners in the industry to showcase our brand at Beauty Expo this year. One of the highlights will be our showcasing of Rezenerate NanoFacial which is one of the newest facial modalities that delivers great results with no downtime, blood, pain or trauma. lients want it all these days, and they want it now. From body contouring to skin tightening and an all-round enhanced look, the more combination therapies a clinic can offer, the better. This is where a device with different modalities can quickly become the MVP of your clinic, which is something Dr Feng Yang from Melbourne Clinical Laser can attest to. Dr Yang has more than 30 years’ experience in general medicine, surgery and cosmetic medicine. The Cosmetic Physician has added non-surgical laser treatment to his service offering and chose Cynosure's TempSure Platform for a variety of treatments. “I have used TempSure for the last two years since the device became available in Australia. I have an early version of Tempsure called Pelleve, which I have had a
great experience with. So it was only natural when the new device arrived that we got it immediately,” Dr Yang says. The TempSure RF platform is an expandable technology that provides the ability to perform surgical and non-surgical aesthetic applications in one convenient 300W, 4MHz device. “The treatments we offer include all the options available on TempSure, which are hand pieces for facial tightening (Envi), body firming and contouring (FlexSure and Firm), women’s health (Vitalia), and surgical lesion removal.” “The device is very easy to use, basic training will normally finish in half a day and the safety of it is confirmed by the fact that we have had no incident at all after five years using this technology,” Dr Yang explains. With its high tolerability and patient satisfaction rate, TempSure and its varied
modalities can open up your clinic to a whole new target group. Cynosure ensures you get the support you need and more, offering training, coaching, and ongoing site visits, as well as providing you with marketing materials to promote your services, helping you to grow your business. “Cynosure is a great company, which offers reliable and timely support to me and my staff. I have no hesitation to recommend them to anyone,” Dr Yang concludes.” To find out more about TempSure, visit cynosureaustralia.com/tempsureplatform/

THE Fourth STATE OF MATTER
Plasma is quickly becoming a popular skin tightening treatment. We chat to Sanja Maria, Founder of Face by SM, about her Plasma Pen. What made you decide to introduce Plasma Pen to your offering at Face by SM?
Plasma Pen by Louise Walsh International
Our clinic decided to introduce Plasma Pen to our offerings as it is one of the most technically advanced alternatives for a client who is wanting a non-invasive skin tightening option, that provides an alternative to injectables.
What skin concern does it target that you weren’t able to treat effectively before?
Founder of Face by SM, Sanja Maria
What is clients’ feedback like when it comes to the treatment itself and their results?
Before and directly after Plasma Pen treatment
The Plasma Pen is an effective treatment for clients who want to target fine lines and skin laxity anywhere on the body. Fine lines are addressed with other modalities or injectables, however there are certain areas where clients don’t want to be overfilled and would prefer this option. It is also a nice treatment for clients who would like to achieve a lip flip and nose sliming effect with the Plasma Pen rather than injectables. Another common concern is sagging of the top and bottom eyelids. Plasma Pen is popular among clients who want this ageing concern addressed, however don’t want to turn to a surgical procedure. The results from Plasma Pen have been noticeable, immediately after the first treatment and continue over 12 weeks.
Can you briefly explain the procedure – is it difficult to perform? Using a pen-like device, the procedure uses the fourth state of matter, Plasma, to achieve visible results. The principle involves the ionisation of gases contained in the air to create a small electrical arc. These ‘arcs’ can be used to treat specific areas of concern without damaging the surrounding areas or applying any unwanted heat to them. As the high frequency electric current is discharged to small areas of the skin (without the tip directly touching the skin), it creates minute dots on the skin’s layer which triggers an instant contraction and tightening of the skin fibres to create a lifting, remodelling and rejuvenating effect of the area being treated. The treatment is not difficult to perform, however you do need to have good precision and patience. Our Face by SM aestheticians would describe it as a quite therapeutic treatment to perform. 78 | SPA+CLINIC
Results vary on the area treated and the laxity of the client’s skin. Multiple sessions may be needed to achieve desired results. We do check-ins with the client at the 6-week and 12-week mark where we are able to assess the results and advise whether another session is required. Feedback has been great! If the client can get past walking around with minute dots on their skin for six to seven days, or arrange to clear their schedules to account for the downtime, everyone says it’s worth it.
How does it sit with your other treatment offers – do you ever combine it with something else? This treatment works hand-in-hand with many of our other offerings at Face by SM. For example, where injectable treatments don’t lift out the fine lines, we would recommend the Plasma Pen. Another combination would be incorporating Ultraformer in the treatment plan, as this targets the skin on a deeper level, whereas the Plasma Pen targets and tightens on a superficial level. If the skin concern is reducing an appearance of a scar and improving skin tone, then a combination of skin needling with the Plasma Pen is also an option that can be customised.
Who is an ideal candidate for the treatment? An ideal candidate for the Plasma Pen treatment would be anyone who has wrinkle, excess skin, acne, verrucas, lentigo, scars, stria or fibromas concerns. Plasma Pen is distributed by Advanced Cosmeceuticals. advancedcosmeceuticals.com.au

NEXT GENERATION Facial Gone are the times of microdermabrasion; nowadays, it’s all about exfoliating AND hydrating.
I
t’s no coincidence HydraFacial has taken the world by storm with millions of treatments performed every year. The exfoliating and hydrating facial is suitable for every skin type and represents the perfect introduction to results-driven facial treatments with no downtime or pain. Patients that may have never had a professional facial, or those that aren’t a fan of extractions, tend to love the feeling of deeply cleaned, smooth, glowing skin that they get with the help of a hydrating facial device. Moreover, it complements a plethora of other treatments, so if you don’t have one in your clinic yet, take a look at some of the devices available.
Cryomed AQUAPURE The gentle, refreshing and relaxing 30-minute treatment that delivers real results with no downtime treats all skin types and boost the effects of other technologies as the perfect companion treatment. The diverse range of ingredients in the AQUAPURE’s proprietary AQUASOLUTION range are specifically 80 | SPA+CLINIC
formulated to combat the most common skin concerns of your patients. The AQUASOLUTION range consist of well-known, popular and trusted acne-busting ingredients such as Lactic and Salicylic Acids to treat oily, congested and blackhead-prone skin types, and Hyaluronic Acid and antioxidants to hydrate and soothe irritated skin. • PEEL+ removes dead skin cells and other impurities with Lactic Acid (9%), keeping the skin clean and smooth. • SEBO+ prevents further breakouts and acne with Lactic (9%) and Salicylic Acid (1%), maintaining moisture levels and dissolving dirt and debris. • REJUVE+ provides skin smoothing benefits with Sodium Hyaluronate (7%) and Oat Kernel Extract (1%). This step hydrates and nourishes the skin by infusing hyaluronic acid and antioxidant-rich ingredients. AQUAPURE’s unique Electroporation enhances the delivery of topical ingredients for improved results. This step conducts electric currents to assist in the transdermal motion, providing a direct route to the deeper layers of the skin. The addition Cryomed AQUAPURE of Micro-Current to facial treatments
Technology
adds a skin tightening and facial slimming effect. Low electrical currents are applied to the skin and muscles to stimulate blood circulation and boost elastin and collagen regeneration. AQUAPURE’s cooling energy is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles while helping to enhance skin repair, while heating energy works to tone and firm the skin. HydraFacial
Adjustable vacuum & 360 degree rotating tip
• The vacuum gently pulls the skin to open up pores by removing impurities from the stratum corneum. • While the skin is being pulled upward, the tip spins 360-degrees. • The vacuum increases local micro-blood circulation while the spinning tip micro-massages the skin to increase the spread of nutrients released from the bloodstream. Powerful jet streams of specifically formulated glow serums
• Each jet stream is finer than an average strand of hair. It measures only 70 microns, which is smaller than the average pore size, effectively reach into the depth of the pore, which promotes maximum absorption of the nutrients. • Three rotation speeds, jet stream pressures and vacuum settings allow for greater treatment customisation, based on the patient’s skin condition. BTL PARTNERS WITH VIVE ACTIVE PILATES STUDIO Body sculpting treatments are no longer limited to medispas and clinics.
I
n an Australian first for fitness studios, Vive Active Neutral Bay has launched ‘Vive Sculpt’ in a partnership with device company BTL. The popular Pilates studio is offering BTL’s latest body sculpting treatment, Emsculpt NEO, as well as the partner technology, BTL Emsella. “BTL Aesthetics and Vive Active are both trailblazers in the wellness and fitness space, and we are thrilled to be partnering with such a wellestablished and innovative brand for the Australian launch of Emsculpt NEO,” says Sales Director of BTL Aesthetics Australia, Gareth Pepper. “With core values that focus on strength, wellness, and health, Vive Active is the perfect brand alignment for this revolutionary technology. It is the first time BTL has launched a new device to the market in the wellness space, rather than Aesthetics, and it is an exciting new direction for us.” Extending the relationship between pilates and total body wellness, Vive Sculpt offers members to treat five different body parts with the Emscuplt NEO: abs, glutes, biceps, triceps and calves. Co-Founder and Director of Vive Active , Louise Keats says for many, it will be the perfect complement to their workout routine to enhance their results, and for some, it may be the beginning of their fitness journey. “We are so humbled to be chosen as one of the first to launch the world-leading Emsculpt NEO technology here in Australia. Vive Active is built on the premise of tech and exercise intertwined, always challenging how you can get the best out of your workouts, and I want to make sure our members are continuing to look at wellness through a much larger lens,” she says. The Emsculpt NEO is BTL Australia’s latest innovation in noninvasive body contouring using radio frequency (RF) and high intensity focused electromagnetic field (HIFEM+) technology. Together they heat fat to temperatures that cause permanent damage and raise muscle temperatures by several degrees to stimulate a warm-up activity. Muscles in the treated area are then contracted and a single 30-minute session is equivalent to 20,000 contractions. After treatment, the fat 82 | SPA+CLINIC

cells are slowly removed from the body and the strained muscle fibres initiate a growth process. Clinical studies have shown an average of 25% muscle building and 30% fat burning. Vive Sculpt’s other offering is BTL’s Emsella, which has seen the brand confront the taboo topic of female incontinence – which often arises post childbirth or during menopause – as well as vaginal rejuvenation for improved intimate satisfaction. Emsella is a completely non-invasive, discreet, and pain-free way to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. It’s a technology that can also benefit males, promoting longer lasting sex. The partnership shows consumers’ growing demand and interest in body sculpting and physical wellbeing treatments and makes nonsurgical treatments accessible and potentially less intimidating than in a medical environment. The DENTIST’S
jab
Getting injectables done at the dentist is becoming the norm as dental clinics increasingly move into the wellness and aesthetics sector.
V
isits to the dentist have certainly changed a lot in the past few years. While it used to be a dreaded semi-annual appointment for most, often associated with discomfort and horrible sounds of drills, today’s dental clinics are more akin to a wellness destination. Long gone are fluorescent lights and blank, white walls, and here to stay are inviting spaces with calming music and, in the case of dental studios, such as Mint*d, a refreshing drinks menu upon arrival. But it’s not just the look of dental clinics that has changed, it’s also the treatment offering with aesthetics treatments such as teeth whitening and cosmetic injectables on the rise. Clients don’t just want their cavities filled, they want to achieve a perfect smile, which often includes a bit of muscle-relaxant to improve gummy smiles and filler for a bigger pout. New dental clinics, such as Cosmodontics in Sydney, attract clients with a modern look and wide treatment offering including veneers, teeth whitening, and cosmetic injections. “We look at your facial structure and overall aesthetics to form an incredibly personalised treatment plan,” it says on their homepage. 84 | SPA+CLINIC
Cosmetic vs Dentist Injector In Australia, ”only authorised registered health practitioners can prescribe schedule 4 drugs. Medical practitioners, dentists and nurse practitioners are authorised prescribers,” according to an AHPRA spokesperson. So is there a difference in qualifications between a cosmetic injector and a dentist injector? AHPRA says “both the Dental Board of Australia (the DBA) and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) expect that when using botulinum toxin or dermal fillers, health practitioners practise in accordance with their respective regulatory standards, codes and guidelines. This includes performing only those procedures for which they have been educated and trained and are competent, and importantly adhering to the relevant state and territory drugs and poison legislation.” We spoke to Dental Cosmetic Surgeon Dr Yvonne King to learn more about the kind of training dentists go through when going into cosmetic injecting.
Medi
“The field of dentofacial aesthetics, just like any other specialty, is quite complex and thorough knowledge is necessary; while at the same time it’s important to keep abreast of latest developments. ” “Dentists study the head and neck anatomy in great detail. This includes all the muscles (their origin and insertion points; their function, which part of the face they move etc), blood vessels , nerves etc. Those of us, who are interested in aesthetics, further our studies in the fields of facial aesthetics after we finish our initial studies. This makes us uniquely equipped to safely and knowledgeably administer facial injectables,” she explains. “The first society to offer postgraduate training, specifically in cosmetic injectables for dentists, was AADFA (Australasian Association for Dentofacial Aesthetics) established by Dr Myles Holt. He also paved the way with APHRA/Dental board to allow the dentists to perform cosmetic injectables. I personally have done their course and also have done some studies during my Masters Program (in Aesthetic Dentistry) at the King’s College London.” There are several education providers in Australia dentists can complete their further education with, however, Dr King stresses the fact that a “weekend course is not enough.” “The field of dentofacial aesthetics, just like any other specialty, is quite complex and thorough knowledge is necessary; while at the same time it’s important to keep abreast of latest developments. It is up to the individual practitioner to further his/her education in this field if they wish to provide high quality aesthetic service.”
Safety Above All So how does a dental patient know whether they can trust their dentist with cosmetic injections? Dr King says it’s all about the questions they ask. “First of all, the patient needs to ensure that the dentist has specific education in how to safely administer injectables. They, ideally, should be associated with a professional body ( like AADFA) that provides continuing education etc. It’s good to ask about experience in the field of aesthetics and also ask to see photos of the previous work (and ensure that what the patient is shown are actual photos of the specific practitioner’s work and not stock/ general photos taken from the Internet),” she explains. “The dentist should be able to explain clearly and succinctly the procedure, risks and benefits and ideally have an information/consent form. They should be able to
Dr Yvonne King
Dental Wellness Clinic Mint*d
answer all the questions that the patient poses. They should be able to tell the patient what would give the desired effect and what would be '’too much'’. They should err on the side of conservative and top up as necessary. The practitioner should be very clear, but definitely not try and talk the patient into any procedures that the patient is not sure of. Also very importantly, the patient needs to feel comfortable and trust the dentist.” Furthermore, the practitioner must ensure that their clinical rooms are suited for the administration of injectables. AHPRA explains that they are “responsible for the condition of the treating premises and should ensure the premises is appropriately staffed and equipped to manage possible complications and emergencies.” “The treating clinic must at a minimum, meet infection control standards. It should have a dedicated space for the procedure, be clean and hygienic, and the person carrying out the procedure should wear protective equipment. If clients see that some infection control or safety precautions are not in place, AHPRA recommends they reconsider where they have the procedure,” an AHPRA spokesperson concludes. spaandclinic.com.au | 85

10 QUESTIONS with
MICHELLE REEVE She is the Founder of Waterlily and an overall wellness, spa and skin expert. We chat to Michelle Reeve to get to know her better.
How did you come up with the concept of Waterlily? Entwined through a corporate career, was an ever-present interest in health through aromatic oils and infusions. Perhaps it’s no great surprise that the field of Aromatherapy finally found me, ignited my passion and captured my heart! As well as being an Aromatherapist, I also have a background of study in remedial massage, nutrition and Chinese medicine. I wanted to create a line of skincare driven by these values, and after extensive research and development, Waterlily launched in 2004.
2. What is your favourite memory of your career? I have so many incredible memories of the journey so far, it’s difficult to pick just one. From seeing my amazing team go from strength to strength, working alongside our beautiful Spa and Salon partners to create flourishing businesses, and seeing how Waterlily transforms guests’ skin both in treatments, and in their skin rituals at home are all memories I cherish.
3. What makes you proud? We have an unwavering commitment to our core values of slow skincare, fresh batched beauty and intensive handcrafted formulations. From day one, each sensory product and spa ritual remains freshly crafted each month in our Botanical Laboratory. This is a real achievement considering we now have over 200 SKU’s and partner with over 150 spa and salons!
4. What does a typical day in your life look like? My time is spent innovating, creating, imagining, researching, mentoring, travelling and learning. I have a dynamic, empowered and truly supportive 88 | SPA+CLINIC

“I was so grateful for technology to stay connected to my loved ones, and grateful for my own health during this time. It has been a reminder that our personal wellbeing is inextricably connected to our communities and to each other. ” team which allows me to focus on business building and product innovation. The one thing we work towards as a team each day is the ritual of sharing lunch together. The sound of banter and laughter communing over a meal fills my heart with joy.
5. What is your favourite Waterlily product at the moment and why? I love our Super Serum Series by Spaceuticals. My go to is always SUPER SMART. It’s a rich creamy emulsion of omega serums boosted with a 2% concentrate of next-gen Vitamin A, Granactive Retinoid. This is intensified with 5% Heptapeptide-7, hyaluronic acid, resveratrol, red raspberry, rose and 20 other active botanicals. It’s luxurious and opulent on the skin and smells like Turkish delight. It’s truly delicious!
6. Have you found a silver lining during the pandemic? While I’m reluctant to see a silver lining in a year of such loss and devastation, witnessing our beautiful Spa and Salon Partners providing care, connection and expertise to their guests during 2020 was a real inspiration. We were so glad to be partnered with such like-minded, passionate advocates of spa wellness. I was so grateful for technology to stay connected to my loved ones, and grateful for my own health during this time. It has been a reminder that our personal wellbeing is inextricably connected to our communities and to each other. We often talk about self-care, of which I am a big advocate for obviously, but self-care is nothing without community.
7. What do you love to do? My ultimate indulgence is taking time to appreciate art. I love the immersion into new cultures and art is such a big part of that for me. Having lived in Rome and stood in front of the Masters, I appreciate how art, architecture and museums are reflected in the tapestry of everyday life. I try to find time to reflect on beautiful works including my favourites: Bernini, Sandro Botticelli, Eugene Boudin, Caravaggio, and the Impressionists.
8. What are you reading at the moment? I was recently gifted bite-sized books on philosophy, joy and reflection. These have been treasured keepsakes which live in my handbag and vie for my attention. I highly recommend any of these as introductions into philosophy or simply as a comfort as we navigate new ways to live: • On Connection by Kae Tempest • Philosophy in 40 Ideas from Lessons for Life • Gratitude by Oliver Sacks
9. Where will you go first once international travel resumes? I had organised a wonderful trip with my closest friends for my 50th last year. It would be such a wonderful joy to still go on this trip when
we can. In the meantime, fingers crossed the Singapore travel bubble will go ahead. Chilli crab, here I come!
10. What would you tell your 16 year-old self? I’d tell her that life is about tiny touch-points and it is the small, beautiful moments – which seem simple at the time – woven together that create a meaningful life. I’d want to tell her that it’s not about arriving at a destination, or a defining punch-the-air moment. Instead, I’d tell her to enjoy the ride. We have never really ever ‘made it’ because there is always so much to continue to learn and grow from, and every day has the possibility of joy. Make the moments count! spaandclinic.com.au | 89
