Going the I

Distance

RISH firms have been doing business in Britain for centuries, with many still going strong today. As we celebrate the 100 firms included in our Irish Post Companies100 2015 list, we pay special attention to those which have truly gone the distance over the years. While 2015 marks 45 years in business for The Irish Post, and we observe, with pride, our own significant milestone, we highlight, specifically, the Irish firms who have also been operating in Britain for 45 years or more as our Green Star Companies. There are 22 such companies in this year’s list, ranging from the more traditional construction firms

– such as Laing O’Rourke, which boasts origins in 1848, and Bennett Construction, which was founded in 1917 – to a wide range of industries where the Irish have held their own in Britain for decades. From sporting organisations to travel agents and cleaning services, there are Irish companies found across the board who have provided a backbone to life in Britain and its infrastructure for so many years that they are now a part of the fabric of the country adopted by their founders upon leaving Ireland. In honour of this achievement, we’ve awarded them all with our ‘Green Star Company’ accolade in 2015, as we publish the third instalment of the Irish Post Companies100 list.

This year’s list also boasts eight new entries, including property developers and real estate investors The Comer Group, Dublin-born celebrity hairdresser Robert Kirby, who has opened his first salon in London, and fashion designer Simone Rocha, who launched her first standalone store in the capital over the summer. There are also five ‘Star Performers’in the list – Fitzpatrick Referrals and Galvin Restaurants, who are both celebrating 10 years in business with exciting new projects, O’Donovan Waste Disposal and Primark, who are also both Green Star Companies, and JD Wetherspoon Plc, which has spent the past year expanding its interests in Ireland. ITZPATRICK Referrals marked a decade in business this year by opening a state of the art animal hospital which will change the way cancer is treated among our furry friends. The company, founded by Laois-native Professor Noel Fitzpatrick in 1997, with the independently owned practice established in 2005, proudly unveiled the new addition to its animal offerings in September, with the help of television and radio presenter Chris Evans – who is a close friend of Mr Fitzpatrick’s and also a biotechnology entrepreneur. Following the launch of Fitzpatrick Referrals’ new Oncology and Soft Tissue Centre, a hospital based in Surrey Research Park in Guildford, which is the first of its kind in Europe, Dr Fitzpatrick told The Irish Post: “While this building will impress and contain the latest equipment, it is the team of people inside that makes it truly outstanding. “We aim to deliver all of the options to all of the animals all of the time. We will also work with our human colleagues to better inform the treatment of human cancer; after all a cancer cell doesn’t care if you are an animal or human; most human and animal cancers are very similar and we share many of the same diseases.” He added: “In this way we will bring new ideas to define the treatments of the future. With Fitzpatrick Referrals Orthopaedics and Neurology, we will also be the only centre in Europe offering custom-designed

3D-printed limb and joint salvage prostheses”. Although cancer is the biggest killer of companion animals after trauma, according to Mr Fitzpatrick, with 50 per cent of dogs and a third of cats over 10 years old dying of the disease, no centre existed to research the disease among our household pets anywhere in Europe prior to the opening of his Surrey hospital. The Irishman, best known for his television series The Bionic Vet on BBC1 and more recently The Supervet on Channel 4, now plans to lead the way on tackling cancer among animals, and if his previous achievements are anything to go by he is more than likely to make an impact in the field. Both of his previous television shows focused on the ground-breaking medical methods and techniques conceived and developed by the vet to treat his patients — including synthetic cartilage transplants, limb salvage prosthesis and limb deformity correction, custom 3D printed joint replacement and spinal disc and fusion systems. Regarding the new centre, Professor Fitzpatrick added: “Whilst we want to inspire and deliver the most innovative and advanced ‘traditional’ model of care, don’t be surprised if some things never change, for example, our deep love for our animal patients whom we treat as our own – written on the glass kennel doors, which we introduced for the first time in the UK 10 years ago, you’re still just as likely to see ‘likes ear scratches and cuddles’ alongside the clinicians chemo care brief!”

Spotlight: Professor Noel Fitzpatrick PROFESSOR Noel Fitzpatrick is the founder and managing director of Fitzpatrick Referrals and a world leader in veterinary neuro-orthopaedics. Fitzpatrick Referrals was launched in 2005 and this year celebrates 10 years of world class medicine, thought leadership, innovation, compassion and care. The specialist veterinary referral hospital now employs more than 170 staff in Surrey and Professor Fitzpatrick has now attained boarded specialist status by examination in both the USA and the UK, with the degrees of ACVSMR, American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and DSAS (Orth),

the Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics). Over the years Professor Fitzpatrick has conceived and developed a number of world-first initiatives, such as synthetic cartilage transplant, limb salvage prostheses, limb deformity correction and custom 3D printed joint replacement. In 2010 a BBC documentary entitled The Bionic Vet saw him develop new methods and techniques, while in 2014 Channel 4 commissioned a new series with his team at Fitzpatrick Referrals entitled The Supervet — which has run for three series and is currently filming a fourth.

Professor Noel Fitzpatrick is now recognised and respected globally as a true thought leader in his field of expertise and has become a trusted source of knowledge and information, who inspires others with his leadership, his life enhancing treatments, his teaching and his passion for superlative care and rehabilitation. Professor Fitzpatrick has sponsored and inspired more than 50 fellowships, internships, residencies and PhDs in Europe and the USA and has delivered more than 600 lectures internationally in the last 10 years. Wetherspoon eyes Irish expansion

A

LTHOUGH well known as a British pub chain – with its bars a staple on the high streets of cities across the country – JD Wetherspoon has spent 2015 focusing on Ireland. That may be no surprise when you learn that the industry giant was founded by the son a Guinness employee who grew up in Dungannon, Derry and Belfast. Tim Martin opened his first JD Wetherspoon pub in Muswell Hill in North London in 1979. He spent the following decades growing the brand, which has become synonymous with cut price food and drinks and now has more than 920 establishments across Britain which continue to pull in the punters with their value for money appeal. But for the past few years Mr Martin has been focusing more on his homeland – where his parents hail from Dungannon in Co. Tyrone – although more specifically on bringing the JD Wetherspoon offering to the south of the island. And after waiting for the prime moment to launch, the chain now has five branches operating in the Republic and plans to open scores more in the years to come. Despite some years of planning, the past 18 months have been the most significant to date in Mr Martin’s Irish masterplan - with JD Wetherspoon branches finally opening in Dun Laoghaire, Blackrock, Blanchardstown and Swords in Dublin and in Paul Street Plaza in Cork city. Mr Martin discussed the expansion with Fiona Audley, as plans for openings in counties Waterford and Carlow got underway. JD WETHERSPOON HAS EXPANDED INTO IRELAND, WHY NOW? At this stage the company has gotten quite big in the UK and if you are thinking of going overseas or into another jurisdiction then Ireland seems a logical enough place to start. It has the same language and the same pub going culture for a start. But as far as our expansion went it was really that a few venues came up and we thought it might be an attractive time. We had looked at Ireland a dozen years previously and bought one site back then, but property prices were going up so much at the time that we thought it was impossible to move beyond that. So 2015 has been a significant year for the expansion. We opened our first bar in Ireland in July 2014 and have opened an additional four, three of which opened there this year, so it’s very significant indeed. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP JD WETHERSPOON PRICES SO LOW? Not that many pub companies in England, let alone Ireland, provide the prices that we do. It’s partly just the fact that we have developed a business which relies on relatively low margins and being able to find a way of making that work for us. Historically pubs have charged quite a lot for what they sell, we charge a bit less and it’s just something that we have been able to do, it’s just the business that we have developed. UNDERCUTTING PRICES IS LIKELY TO IMPACT ON PUBS LOCATED NEAR YOUR BRANCHES, DO YOU BELIEVE THERE IS ROOM FOR ALL? If you take London, which has similarities with Dublin as a major cosmopolitan city, where we have opened 150 pubs over the years, previously dominant family brewers such as Young’s and Fuller’s have gone from strength to strength since we have been there. I think they genuinely believe that they have benefited

14

www.irishpost.co.uk

The Forty Foot Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

from our presence. That’s not to say that individual pubs that haven’t invested enough, or are overcharging, won’t suffer some commercial pressure because I think they probably will in reality. HOW HAVE IRISH PUB GOERS TAKEN TO THE ARRIVAL OF YOUR CHAIN? From the people in Ireland I think generally we have had a good welcome. We have also found quite serious antipathy there to the stranglehold that a few major suppliers seem to have on the market. I think they are ready to pay better prices for their food and drink. THE DESIGN OF YOUR IRISH PUBS SEEMS DIFFERENT TO YOUR LONDON ESTABLISHMENTS, WHY SO? We haven’t opened many new pubs in London in the last 15 years but our pubs in Ireland reflect what we have learnt over the years. They are more like the pubs we are opening across Britain, which tend to be a bit bigger and they often have beer gardens or outdoor drinking facilities. We are only too aware having only just arrived in Ireland that we have to put our best foot forward so we have told our designers to pull out all the stops. Of course design is a fraught area. It can be too formulaic. It has to be individual and there is a certain pub atmosphere you have to create that is different from a cafe or a restaurant. It’s quite an art to create a pub which has atmosphere. WITH FIVE IRISH BRANCHES NOW UP AND RUNNING, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE IN IRELAND? Further expansion is definitely in our plans, but as with any business it’s very much subject to how the first few pubs go over a few years. However, we are optimistic that we could have 30 or 40 good pubs in Ireland over the next few years. AND YOU’RE AN IRISHMAN YOURSELF, AREN’T YOU? I am, my parents come from Dungannon in Northern Ireland and both my brothers were born in Belfast. I was born in England but went to school in Dungannon, Derry and Belfast. As a teenager I went to New Zealand as my old man worked for Guinness and when I was there my nickname was ‘Irish’. Although at 15, when I came back to Ireland, because of my accent I was considered a ‘kiwi’. Both those things have worked quite well for me. I hit the road then in 1973 and apart from trips back to Ireland to see family and so on I have been living in England ever since.

JD Wetherspoon… the Irish expansion July 2014: JD Wetherspoon opens its first pub in the south of Ireland. The Three Tun Tavern in Blackrock, Dublin. The company spent €2.38million developing the venue, located on the site of the former Tonic Bar, which created 60 new jobs in Blackrock when it opened on July 8.

December 2014: The Forty Foot pub opens bringing 60 new jobs to Dun Laoghaire, Dublin. JD Wetherspoon spent another €2.38million developing its second opening in southern Ireland, based in the Pavilion Theatre complex overlooking Dun Laoghaire harbour. June 2015: JD Wetherspoon opens the The Great Wood pub in Blanchardstown, Dublin on June 20 – creating 120 new jobs in the area. Investing €3.87million into their third Irish pub, the venue is located on the site of the former Light Nightclub in Westend Shopping Park. July 2015: The British pub chain extends its Irish reach to Swords in Dublin. JD Wetherspoon invests €2.8million redeveloping an existing bar on the site of a former school in Main Street, bringing 85 jobs to the area. Launched on July 21, The Old Borough retains many of the original features of the school. September 2015: Cork is the first county outside of Dublin to welcome a JD Wetherspoon pub onto its streets. The Linen Weaver openened following a €3.65million redevelopment of the site of the former Newport Cafe Bar and Restaurant in Paul Street Plaza. The opening brings 75 new jobs to the city and the total of the Irish expansion to five pubs.

17 THE VOICE OF THE IRISH IN BRITAIN SINCE 1970

W

HEN the sudden death of her father thrust her into a position of responsibility within the family business at the age of 17, Jacqueline O’Donovan was determined to find her way in the world of construction and keep the firm going strong. Now, more than 30 years later, O’Donovan Waste Disposal is one of the leading independent waste management companies in London, with more than 140 employees and a raft of industry awards on its mantelpiece. Specialising in skip hire, waste management, tipper and grab lorry services, recycled aggregates and screening, road sweepers and demolition services, the company continues to be family-owned and run, with Jacqueline and her three siblings remaining at the helm. Having been founded in 1959 by their Co. Cork father Joe O’Donovan, it now boasts more than 55 years as an Irish firm in business in Britain and is a pioneer and industry leader in environmental, sustainability and health and safety standards. O’Donovan Waste Disposal achieves a Companies100 Green Star Company and Star Performer title for 2015 – a year in which the firm, under the leadership of Managing Director Jacqueline, has won or been a finalist in eight national industry awards. Jacqueline took some time out of her busy schedule in the world of waste to tell Fiona Audley a little more about the company’s achievements over the past 12 months and what we can expect from them in 2016.

Winning ways in waste HOW SIGNIFICANT HAS THE PAST YEAR BEEN? 2015 has been extremely significant for O’Donovan Waste Disposal. It saw us invest in our biggest freehold property and re-develop it completely into a state-of-the-art material recycling facility. On top of this we’ve been shortlisted for and won a number of awards as well as being a pivotal part of launching the Safer Lorry Scheme in London. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS? Being invited by Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s office to launch the Safer Lorry Scheme alongside Sainsbury. (The Safer Lorry Scheme was launched by the Mayor of London and TFL to make London’s roads safer and requires all lorries to have basic safety equipment fitted before being allowed on the capital’s roads). ARE THERE ANY 2015 ACHIEVEMENTS THAT YOU ARE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF? The opening of our new materials recycling facility in Alperton, Wembley in August this year, along with trialling five lorries with enhanced safety features in a bid to raise road safety standards. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME THIS YEAR? It is still extremely difficult to recruit due to the continuing shortage of

18

qualified HGV drivers. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM O’DONOVAN WASTE DISPOSAL IN THE COMING YEAR? We’re really excited that we’ll soon be launching our ’Employer of Choice’ programme, which will strengthen our ability to attract quality staff. We will also be continuing to raise standards in relation to education within the industry, particularly with regards to road safety and setting an example to other likeminded SMEs in this area too. O’DONOVAN WASTE DISPOSAL IS CLEARLY AN INDUSTRY LEADER, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAINTAIN THAT POSITION IN SUCH A COMPETITIVE SECTOR? It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and time. You have to be committed to the cause, passionate and open minded in the industry and embrace the changes that inevitably evolve over time. AS AN IRISH COMPANY IN BRITAIN, HOW IMPORTANT ARE YOUR IRISH ROOTS TO THE WORK YOU DO? Massively, our Irish heritage is something we are extremely proud of and shout about from the rooftops at every opportunity. We have homes over in Ireland and are already instilling Irish values into the next generation!
