Welcome to the 2013 Irish Post index of Irish companies in Britain T
HE Irish Post Companies100 index is a celebration of the success and longevity of Irish businesses in Britain and the people who have worked tirelessly to make that happen. Our A-Z directory launches at a time when British-Irish economic relations are firmly in the spotlight, with the growth of trade and commercial links increasingly important to both nations. The 100 companies listed here, in our inaugural edition, highlight the great number of companies who have made a mark here in Britain. But it is by no means an exhaustive list. This is a list that will grow year-on-year, just as the companies within it – both stalwarts of industry and fledgling firms – continue to do. In recent years there has been a shift towards the promotion and growth of Irish business in Britain and vice versa. Networking groups such as the Irish International Business Network and the London Irish Business Society have sprung up to allow Irish business owners and directors to come together and share their wealth of knowledge and skills.
The launch of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce in 2011 further highlighted the strength of the British-Irish business relationship and continues to do so. Our Companies100 partners Enterprise Ireland also provide another excellent showcase of the innovative ways Irish businesses old and new are currently taking shape, succeeding and often leading in the British market. The Irish Post, as the voice of the Irish in Britain, seeks to recognise the positive qualities that Irish businesses, their owners and workers bring to Britain’s economic landscape. In this supplement we salute their expertise, skill, determination and hard work and wish them an abundance of future success. Siobhán Breatnach Editor, The Irish Post

Let’s embrace bilateral trade ONE of the positives to come out of the recent period of economic difficulty, for both Britain and Ireland, is the extent to which we have rediscovered how economically interdependent we are. Two-way trade runs at around €1billion per week, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in both economies. Despite the recent difficulties, Irish exports to Britain have grown substantially. In the other direction, Ireland takes twice the volume of British exports compared to China. In addition, substantial DAZZLING: Irish companies have the golden touch in Britain. See page 5 for one company, Brilliant Inc., that has seen success in the luxury retail market by selling simulated diamond jewellery.
investment in both directions also creates badly needed jobs, for example the many British highstreet names across Irish towns and cities or the British operations of Irish food and construction companies throughout Britain. Then there is the phenomenon of the ‘Irish’ British company, familiar names such as Laing O’Rourke and Murphy that you see all around the streets of Britain and which are now being followed by financial, legal and technologybased companies which want to tap into the London market. That platform is the basis for
looking to new ways for Ireland and Britain to work collaboratively. It is in that context that the Taoiseach and Prime Minister signed a Joint Statement in 2012, recognising that working together in sectors like agri-food, R&D, energy and financial services could lead to stronger businesses and more opportunities. That work is now well under way. It is very timely therefore that The Irish Post should produce a directory of Irish business interests in the British market, and one that can be expanded and updated as opportunities progress. Such a
directory has been a missing piece in the jigsaw and will be of benefit not just to buyers and suppliers but also to a variety of other organisations, including the Embassy, State agencies, business networks and representative organisations. In itself it can develop as a contribution to British Irish economic relations. Congratulations to The Irish Post for all that it is doing to highlight the prominence of Irish people and companies on the British business scene and to furthering business relations between Britain and Ireland.

Addington (Formwork) Ltd SECTOR: Specialised Construction MANAGING DIRECTOR: Michael Corcoran FOUNDED: 1979 STAFF: 300-400 TURNOVER: £15-£20million Addington (Formwork) Ltd is a reinforced concrete frame and substructure contractor that provides services to both large and small scale projects. The company operates predominantly within the south east and south of England, but also has sites in Scotland, including Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Set up in 1979 and based in Bracknell, Berkshire, the company embarked on a plan of sustainable growth ever since its inception. Addington undertakes all forms of concrete frame construction and associated ground works operations in all sectors, including: commercial, residential developments, hotels, schools, shopping centres, hospitals and leisure facilities. Addison Lee SECTOR: Transport/Minicabs CHAIRMAN: John Griffin FOUNDED: 1975 in London STAFF: 900 plus 4,500 self-employed drivers TURNOVER: N/A Minicab company Addison Lee, founded by John Griffin, was bought earlier this year for £300million by private equity firm the Carlyle Group. Having started with just one car in Battersea it has grown to be Europe’s largest minicab company in just over 35 years with over 4,500 cars now on the road. The name Addison Lee was chosen because ‘A’ is always at the top of the phone book. A colleague mentioned to John that people thought his address, Addison Gardens, sounded very posh. John added ‘Lee’ to complete the name and so Addison Lee was born. The secret of Addison Lee’s success lies not only in its commitment to technology but also in the company’s respect for the driver — a principle founded by John’s experiences of the long hours he himself worked as a driver. John has always taken an interest in the wider issues associated with his business. In 1976 John formed the Private Hire Car Association in response to the Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1976. As chairman of the association, John was instrumental in helping minicabs transition to a fully-fledged, licensed industry. CYNAR: In the world of converting waste to energy, Cynar has developed an innovative technology that converts a variety of plastics into synthetic-fuels. A process that can handle most types of plastic waste that are currently sent to landfill or incinerated. The company’s first full scale facility is currently being constructed in Bristol. This will be Britain’s first ever facility to produce diesel from end of life plastics. It will produce about 4.2million litres of diesel fuel per year from 6,000 tonnes of plastics, such as yoghurt pots. Each Cynar plant can process up to 20 tonnes of end of life plastic per day, producing circa 19,000 litres of high quality liquid fuels at a conversion rate of 95 per cent. The Cynar Technology represents a unique and profitable means of managing the plastic issue so that in the future there will be a significant decrease in the end of life plastics disposed of in landfill sites or incinerated.
