How to find 2018’s leading Irish companies
Since founding his pioneering veterinary practice in 2005, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, otherwise know as The Supervet, has become a household name. The Irishman’s star continues to soar, with a new stage show and the publication of his first book just some of his achievements in 2018. See pages 16-17 for more.
Companies that conquer… THERE are Irish success stories to be found in all industries across Britain. Tales of men and women who have a passion for their craft, a talent to pursue or an idea which they just had to explore that led to the creation of a company. This year’s Companies 100 list is full of firms which attest to that – from the small companies who have achieved great things, to the global firms which continue to maintain a significant position in their respective markets. These companies (and those behind them) tell individual success stories, but together they tell the tale of the Irish in business in Britain - those who came, saw and conquered.

The rising stars of industry Founded in 2009, in the wake of the banking crisis, London-based DRS Bond Management Ltd (DRS) has grown rapidly to become the UK’s leading independent surety specialist. DRS covers the whole of the UK, Ireland and international companies and focuses predominantly on the Construction, Property Development and Waste sectors. DRS arranges surety solutions for a vast range of bonding needs, including: ■ Performance Bonds ■ Retention Bonds ■ Advance Payment Bonds ■ Highways Bonds ■ National House Building Council (NHBC) Bonds ■ Bid Bonds ■ Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) Bonds ■ Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Bonds ■ Restoration Bonds Most guarantees are still arranged within the banking sector. This typically ties up 100 per cent of the bond sum as collateral. Bank bonds are typically ‘on demand’, regardless of the bond wording, which is an unacceptable commercial risk. Bonds issued by the banks may also be difficult to release. Bank rates for guarantees may be impacted by other bank debt. With increasing regulatory pressure, banks are becoming restrictive in their acceptance of new facilities. In contrast, the surety market is vibrant and dynamic, with a growing appetite. Surety is transformational: releasing working capital, alleviating the need for liquid security and reducing strain on banking facilities. The surety market’s principal advantages compared to the banks are: ■ Zero collateral starting point, over 98% of DRS’ bonds are issued without cash collateral ■ DRS typically negotiates on default bond wordings, with clear trigger events, that are fully explained to all parties and protect against iniquitous claims ■ On demand bonds can be issued where appropriate ■ Superior release of liability advice ■ Rates are competitive with banks, often cheaper ■ Bonds issued by banks are hard liabilities ■ Bonds issued by sureties are contingent liabilities i.e. ‘off balance sheet’
As we only utilise sureties with investment grade ratings (minimum ‘A-‘ Standard & Poor’s or equivalent), DRS negates counter party risk for project funders. DRS is committed to unravelling misinformation around surety, allowing clients, banks, employers and their agents to become more aware of the benefits of surety. Historically, outside of the banks, surety has been sold through the insurance market. This causes confusion and misunderstanding as there is no risk transfer. DRS listens closely to our clients and regularly holds events for leaders of British and Irish industry. DRS publish guides on bonding, finance and governance best practice to support stable surety facilities. DRS is prominent in identifying the rising stars of industry, both within and outside our organisation, to drive up standards of expertise. Historically, there has been no structured or recognised training programme for surety practitioners. In conjunction with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and the Association of Corporate Treasurers, DRS has developed chartered training which runs simultaneously with a professional development programme. DRS is committed to the exponential growth and application of surety. Our team undertake a detailed discovery of clients’ past, current and future requirements and apply that knowledge through a thorough examination of the surety market, before arranging bonds in an accurate and timely manner. We ensure that our clients avoid disruption to their surety facilities and discuss all options to enhance this stability where additional capacity is required. DRS is committed to growth, not only of our own top and bottom line but that of the wider UK and Irish economy. We will make surety accessible to everyone who needs it on both sides of the Irish Sea and the Irish border.

ORE than a decade ago second generation Irish brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin opened their first restaurant together. Although Essex born and bred, with a father who hailed from Co. Cork, the pair chose not British or even Irish fare to serve their customers. Instead Galvin Bistrot de Luxe, on London’s Baker Street, offered fine dining on French cuisine – with the ambitious brothers determined to make it “the best French restaurant in London”. In keeping with their goals, it became an overnight success, achieved numerous accolades and quickly saw the pair achieve their initial aim, with the venue voted Best French Restaurant for two years running. But it also proved the founding block of what would grow to become one of Britain’s biggest culinary success stories. Now, more than ten years after launching that first restaurant, the Galvin brothers boast nine venues – located in London, Edinburgh, Essex and Dubai - and just last month celebrated retaining their two Michelin stars for a ninth and tenth year, for their Galvin La Chapelle and Galvin at Windows
restaurants respectively. Part of that celebration saw them offer all diners visiting their British establishments a free glass of Galvin Champagne. While starting small, focusing their efforts on getting their first restaurant exactly right, the brothers now sit at the head of a culinary empire. Although they’ve had their fair share of ups and downs along the way. During their 13 years in business they have weathered a recession, broadened their business and culinary horizons by successfully opening a pub and, most recently, been forced to close their first restaurant. They sadly bid farewell to Galvin Bistrot De Luxe in February of this year, claiming it was a hard decision to make but one that avoided losing the “soul” of the establishment. Informing their patrons ahead of the closure, Chris Galvin, who ran the restaurant, said: “It is with great regret and a heavy heart that Jeff and I must inform you that Galvin Bistrot de Luxe will cease trading. This has not been an easy decision to make but has been taken predominantly due to many events outside our control which means we are no longer able to remain competitive on quality and price – our original goal – yet remain a viable business at the same time.” With that said, the brothers, in their unwavering entrepreneurial style, went on to confirm to their patrons and the industry more widely that the time was right to explore something new. “It was ahead of its time,” they said, “and now it’s time to move on.” “We never wanted to water down the concept or the quality of food we have been proud to serve to a loyal clientele for 12 years. We will not copy anything but we will take inspirations and develop new concepts in our own way and will launch a new concept for each of the next five years. We’re really excited and positive about this change and looking forward to what we can develop now that we will have the time to consider and be open to new ideas.” Of course they still have nine other establishments to concern themselves with in the meantime - namely Galvin La Chapelle and Galvin Hop in Spital Square, Shoreditch, Galvin at Windows, Park Lane;

Having obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from University College Dublin in 1990, Professor Fitzpatrick undertook scholarships at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Ghent, before going on to complete Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) certificates in small animal orthopaedics and radiology. In 2005 he opened Fitzpatrick Referrals, which is currently Britain’s largest dedicated small animal orthopaedic and neurosurgical facility. Based in Surrey, it employs over 250 veterinary professionals and comprises state of the art surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitation facilities.
WORLD-CLASS: Fitzpatrick Referrals Oncology and Soft Tissue Hospital In Guildford, Surrey
Since founding the practice Professor Fitzpatrick has been responsible for conceiving and developing a number of world-first initiatives in animal surgery including synthetic cartilage transplant, limb salvage prostheses, limb deformity correction and custom 3D printed joint replacement. But it wasn’t until 2010 that the remarkable work of the pioneering animal doctor was revealed to the country at large - when BBC documentary The Bionic Vet first aired. That programme saw Professor Fitzpatrick develop never before seen surgical methods and techniques that provided hope for injured animals and their owners. Of course witnessing such remarkable advances in animal surgery proved a ratings winner and in 2014 Channel 4 commissioned a new series focusing on the work of the Professor and his team at Fitzpatrick Referrals, entitled The Supervet. Now in its 12th series, the programme sees a host of animals and their families sharing their treatment journeys at the two busy practices now run by the Irishman – namely Fitzpatrick Referrals Orthopaedics and Neurology practice in Eashing and Fitzpatrick Referrals Oncology and Soft Tissue hospital in Guildford. Away from filming for the series, and from his day job working at the practices, 2018 has also brought a number of firsts for Professor Fitzpatrick. Throughout the year he has undertaken a countrywide tour of Britain with his live stage show Welcome To My World – in which he not only discusses some of the

medical advances he has helped to develop, but also takes the audience on a voyage into what he describes as “immersive theatre, a struggle of the everyman to achieve their dream”. He has also found time to write a book, Listening to the Animals: Becoming the Supervet, which was published in October. And last month Professor Fitzpatrick also gave a keynote speech at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Surgery Summit for the very first time. “For over twenty years I have been attending ACVS, as a delegate and as a speaker, and I recognise the significance of this moment for myself personally and professionally,” he said of the experience. He described his presentation, ‘Revolution or Evolution? Ethics & Engineering of Bionic Biology’, as “taking a tour from basic to advanced neuro-orthopaedic techniques in the context of the IDEAL framework – idea, development, exploration, assessment and long-term study as indicated for innovation in similar aspects of human surgery”. He added: “This subject is very close to my heart, as I believe veterinary medicine needs to constantly revaluate our modes of thinking towards ethics and engineering as we head toward the future of bionic biology.” Regarding the importance of the event for him, Professor Fitzpatrick admits: “This lecture is the biggest event of my career to date and I am hugely honoured to be asked to share my perspective on the vitally important issues of ethics and engineering as we try to inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals.”

This team has been strengthened over the years with the recruitment of additional equally talented individuals from within the industry. The swift development of the company’s activities has necessitated a huge investment in modern plant and vehicles. As the company policy is to undertake all servicing and maintenance in house it has also been necessary to invest in the infrastructure in order to accommodate the enlarged fleet. Six steps to build a better future for your business We’ve built six steps to forming a strong strategic approach to building your business. Big or small, contractor, architect, engineer, client or consultant. These are steps we can take together right now – even in a tough trading environment.
1
2 Unlock extra cash quickly
Know what you’re doing right, what you’re doing wrong, and how you can do it better
Low margins and high risk mean there’s not much cash about. But, with our help, you can generate extra cash through a range of means. The government’s R&D tax credits are just one of those ways. We work with you to unlock new funds, so you can invest in your future.
Make sense of the data you’re already collecting and collect new data to reveal your strengths and weaknesses from bids to delivering projects. We help you get the data, analyse it and provide insights to improve marketing, boost bid success, make operations more effective, mitigate risk, and increase margins.
3 Innovate and make the most of technology Throughout businesses new technologies can add value and cut costs as well as deliver better working practices. Make the most of The Internet of Things, automation, and even Artificial Intelligence. It all makes a difference to the bottom line as well as the way your business is perceived. We help you choose and develop the right technologies for the best outcomes.
4
Forge the right relationships for long-term effectiveness and value Construction is all about relationships: between clients, designers, consultants and contractors, the authorities and the public, the users, neighbours and wider society. That takes a holistic, human approach that starts before a bid and lasts long after the projects are complete. We have a large network and proven methods to help you develop the right relationships.
5 Procure smarter, bid smarter, win smarter Is your procurement process really focussed on delivering value? You might win bids but are you making the margins that your quality and commitment deserve? You might procure cheaply but are you getting the outcomes you need? Are you bidding for the right projects? Are the contract terms favourable to you or someone else? We use data and market insights to help you make the right decisions, and then ensure you get the best terms so you can grow a long-term successful business.
6
Deliver smarter It is essential that projects are focussed on maximising value: to the client, the designers, the contractors, users and society as a whole. Every project must generate profit. Not just to reward hard work, but to build value for the future. Build revenue and reputation. Be the brand that stands out. Transform society’s view of construction through quality processes and outcomes. We help you do that through proven systems that monitor performance, report on progress and identify areas for corrective action.
Build the right strategy A lack of strategy leads to mediocrity or failure. The right strategy delivers strength. It’s the foundation for progress. And strategy can only be forged by understanding needs, strengths, weaknesses, and relationships. Invennt helps you cut through the noise of day-to-day concerns to think clearly. Thinking is hard when you’re hard-pressed. We do a lot of the thinking for you and with you, so you can see what really matters. That sweet-spot in the Venn diagram of your world. Our business is based on experience, commitment, and a passion for a better construction sector. So it can be recognised as the engine of our economy. Admired for quality and creativity as well as social responsibility. But which also delivers greater value quickly.
Brendan Morahan would like to talk to you about what we can do together to transform your business and make our sector admired by all.
Call 07816 514505 or email brendan.morahan@invennt.com.
