FUNERALS&REPATRIATIONS The rising cost of dying Advertiser’s message
THE rising cost of dying is a subject most people don’t want to talk about. But with costs going up as much as 87 per cent in the last 10 years, it is a real concern that people are struggling to pay for the funerals of their loved ones. A report by Sunlife revealed that a funeral costing just £2,000 in 2005 could cost as much as £10,000 by 2029, leaving loved ones not only grieving but also faced with huge costs. With the average shortfall being £2,300, many people are finding themselves having to dig into savings, borrow from friends and family or put it on their credit card. But there is a better solution. At Arrange My Funeral there are funeral plans tailored to suit all needs. “By taking out a funeral plan now you secure today’s prices, removing the worry for your loved ones that everything is arranged, according to personal wishes, from the cars to the flowers.” Working with Safehands, one of the industry’s most trusted and recognised funeral plan providers, Arrange My Funeral can offer: Peace of mind Protection for your loved ones from rising funeral costs, sparing them the distress of having to make difficult decisions and helping to remember that this is a celebration of life. Security The money you pay goes into a secure trust fund so there will always be sufficient funds available to cover the costs. Choice With a comprehensive range of plans to suit all budget and tastes, each funeral can be tailored to suit particular preferences. Flexibility You can pay for your plan in one single lump sum or alternatively spread the cost over anything up to 10 years.
“We all think of our future whether that be pensions, life insurance or wills but very few think what will happen in the weeks or days after we die. “By sorting it out now with a funeral plan you can be happy in the knowledge that the loved ones you leave behind don’t have to.” Arrange My Funeral is the only pre-paid funeral plan company officially endorsed by the National Federation of Funeral Directors. NFFD Ambassador and TV doctor Dr Hillary Jones, says: “As a GP, death and dealing with bereaved families is a regular part of my work so supporting the NFFD’s cause to improve the industry and make the grieving process easier, is something I’m only too happy to do. “While there will always be a demand for the traditional and trusted family funeral directors the NFFD also recognises that increased competition and transparency is vital to creating and maintaining a healthier balance between the price customers pay and the quality and value for money of the services they receive.” Arrange My Funeral offers a range of plan options. For example the Pearl funeral plan is ideal for those who have simplicity in mind — loved ones will have the reassurance of a traditional, dignified ceremony with no compromise on levels of care and attention to detail. The Sapphire plan is the most popular in their range. It includes a quality lined veneered coffin, a limousine to transport your loved ones to the ceremony as well as 24 hour bereavement support and advice, to give additional peace of mind. All plans can also be adopted to those who wish to be buried and personal requests can be included. ■ For more details go to www.arrangemyfuneral.co.uk

FUNERALS&REPATRIATIONS
Securing peace of mind at times like this
I
T’S a sad task to have to contemplate, but it’s one that many in our community have had to face over the years and will continue to face — repatriating the body of a loved one back to Ireland so that he or she can rest in peace in their own native soil. From organising the relevant paperwork to personalising the day in tribute, here’s what you need to know…
1. Getting a death certificate This shows the cause of death, and should be signed by a doctor. If the death is unexpected, or the cause of death unknown, sudden or unexplained it may be reported to the coroner. The coroner will give you the documents you need, or they’ll send them directly to the registrar. For more details go to www.gov.uk 2. Gather up personal documents Gather up your loved one’s death certificate, birth certificate, marriage/civil partnership certificate and medical card if available. You may need some or all of them. 3. Register the death The death must be registered in the country where the person passed away. This is a legal requirement. This procedure is roughly similar throughout EU countries, and is almost identical in both Ireland and Britain, and
for Irish passport holders and British passport holders. You can go to www.gov.uk/ register-a-death to find out what you need to do. If for example the person died in England, at home or in hospital and the death was expected you should register the death within five days. You can go to any local register office but if you use the one in the area where the person died you’ll be given the documents you’ll need on the day. Otherwise it usually means waiting a few days. Registering a death will take about 30 minutes so you might need to make an appointment. You can register the death if you’re: —A relative —Someone present at the death —An administrator from the hospital —The person making arrangements with the funeral directors 4. Inform the Embassy — if outside Britain or Ireland If your loved one died in Britain, the Irish Embassy does not need to be informed. However, if they died elsewhere in Europe, the Irish Embassy in that country needs to be informed. They will help with the process of getting the body back home. 5. Appoint a funeral director In Britain, it’s best to appoint a
British-based funeral director who can help with all the arrangements, including the writing of obituary notices for newspapers, preparing your loved one for burial or cremation, and managing the funeral itself. The funeral director will be able to take you through all the questions from the most basic: where you want the service, what time to hold it, how many cars, type of coffin, etc. The director will also advise on flowers and decoration of the chapel — although the deceased may have expressed some preference for this before their death. 6. Decide on burial or cremation Your loved one may have left specific instructions on this. If not, perhaps other relatives or friends may have picked up a preference. Discuss it with them. 7. Decide whether to repatriate your loved one back to Ireland With the cost of burial places in Britain rising substantially over the past few years, repatriation isn’t any more expensive. If they have been cremated, transportation is easier. In 2014, the average cost of a basic funeral in Britain was around £3,590. If funeral costs continue to rise at the same rate as they have over the last 10 years, the average funeral is expected to cost around £4,489 by 2019.

own funeral home, delivering the very best of funeral care. His company now serves the substantial Irish population in Scotland, and also in England. “We cover everywhere from London to Inverness, although obviously most of our business is in the Glasgow area. I’d say about 30 per cent of families in the area are Irish or have Irish roots — a huge number of them are from Donegal.” Desmond’s own family is from Ireland. His father Edward was from Fermanagh and mother Susan from Donegal. “I’m the 10th in the family,” says Desmond. From these humble beginnings Desmond Maguire worked hard and he is now one of the top funeral directors in Scotland. “People in the community obviously know me, and they know that I can supply everything they need. With Irish families, they like to have everything done properly, but quickly as well. We do everything in-house — we even have our own embalmers — so that takes a lot of worry out of the situation for the relatives.” One of the changes over recent years, according to Desmond, is that fewer people are asking to be buried back in Ireland. “In days gone by people would say, ‘I want to go home’. But now they have families here, have put

Desmond Maguire – inspired to help those in need WHEN Glasgow’s Desmond Maguire started washing funeral cars at the age of 15, it didn’t take him long to notice how important a good funeral could be for a grieving family. Inspired to help those in need, Desmond took a job as a funeral service operative when he finished school. He gradually worked his way through the ranks — taking a spell out to work in the construction industry. But he soon realised he was very good at the job. He is very good with people, and is extremely wellorganised. “I suppose I’m something of a workaholic,” he says. He is also exceptionally skilled at his job. “When people came to the firm I worked with previously, they would ask for me by name — they could see I knew exactly what I was doing.” So in June 2006, Desmond decided to open his

down roots here, so a lot of people have decided they want to rest here in Britain.” Of course, there is still a big demand to have bodies repatriated, and the process doesn’t necessarily work out more expensive. “The cost of taking a body home from Glasgow is around the £1,800 mark. Whereas to buy a plot in a cemetery in England is from around £2,000 upwards. In Ireland the churches own the graveyards by and large, so often all you have to pay for is the grave digger.” There is documentation required to transport a body across an international border, but again Desmond Maguire can provide all that. “We can help with all documentation, getting all the certificates from death certificate to embalming certificate, and contacting the shipping authorities. “We try to make it as easy as possible for the grieving relatives. It’s one less worry they have.” And in essence that’s what a good funeral director like Desmond Maguire does — at a time of great sadness the last thing a family needs is more stress. So he can at least remove the administrative and practical obstacles, and allow the family to grieve. ■ For more information go to www.desmondmaguire.co.uk or call 0141 4240300.
University of Bath’s Institute for Policy Research). However you can pay much more or less than this, depending what you supply at the funeral, and how much you organise yourself. For instance if you hire three black limousines funeral cars, that’ll cost a few hundred pounds, and may not be strictly necessary. Repatriating a body back to Ireland costs from around £1,800 — information supplied by Desmond Maguire Funeral Directors. But funeral costs in Ireland are generally lower than in Britain, so there may not be a huge difference in cost. 9. Contact friends, relatives and businesses Your loved one may have left a list of those to be contacted in the event of death. Other administrative work may be required, such as informing the bank etc that your loved one has passed away. Sometimes a solicitor can take over the burden of this. 10. Order of service Your funeral director will be able to advise on this. But the family will need to decide on what speeches, poetry, hymns etc are used. And most of important of all, the person delivering the eulogy needs to be given as much support as possible. There may have been a particular song or piece of music that your loved one particularly wanted to be played, or was in some way associated with them.

You’ll then need to decide if you ant live music or taped. Again, the funeral director will have a list of musicians and singers who are suitable. Humour, anthems from the football terraces, film and TV scores as well as poignant pop songs make up over 60 per cent of most popular choices for funeral services in Britain. Here’s some of the most-played songs… Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, Monty Python The Lord is My Shepherd Abide with Me Match of the Day theme My Way, Frank Sinatra All Things Bright and Beautiful Angels, Robbie Williams Enigma You’ll Never Walk Alone, Gerry and the Pacemakers Cricket Theme Canon in D, Pachelbel Love Theme from Titanic/My Heart Will Go On, Celine Dion Last of the Summer Wine | Only Fools and Horses theme tunes Time to Say Goodbye, Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bochelli Four Seasons, Vivaldi Ave Maria, Schubert Coronation Street TV theme You Raise Me Up, Westlife | Over the Rainbow, Eva Cassidy Rugby Theme/World in Union Nessun Dorma, Puccini | Adagio, Bizet/Albinoni Research by the Co-operative Funeralcare
AS more and more people choose cremation over burial, Tom and Jim Kinnane have seen a surge of interest in their Irish Heritage Urns. This innovative company embrace the history of Ireland and the tradition of fine craftsmanship with their handcrafted urns, keeping your loved ones close forever. The unique design encapsulates the magnificent history of the Irish landscape. Each piece is individually handcrafted in Tipperary by the Kinnane brothers — master carpenters for more than 20 years. Though now living in Ireland brothers Jim and Tom were both born in London to Irish parents who left Ireland in the 1960s. And the inspiration for their family business has come from the memory of those Irish and subsequent generations who remained abroad, unable to return for so many reasons, and who died away from their ancestral home. “We utilise the best of Irish heritage design subtly combined with new ideas to produce contemporary but traditional Irish urns that pay tribute to the family history of your loved one and honours their memory in a very special way,” Tom says. Each urn is crafted from native Irish wood and available in Irish oak, Irish beech, Irish ash, Irish sycamore or Irish yew. “All of our timber is native to Ireland and is sourced in forests and woodlands in the Irish
countryside,” Jim added. “Variation in each urn, such as grain, is part of the creative process and adds to the unique character of your chosen urn. “We want to offer a place which represents a piece of Ireland to carry or bury loved ones’ remains in.” Referring to their range of keepsake urns, Tom explained: “We have been asked to make theses for families who wish to divide ashes. “Most families who choose cremation don’t have the opportunity to buy a personalised cremation urn or vessel. “We provide families with the opportunity to replace unsuitable caskets with a dignified Irish Heritage Urn — an authentic custom engraved Irish casket made from native Irish timber to honour and memorialise their loved ones.” Optional custom engraving and/or traditional Irish symbols are also available to personalise your urn at no charge. Irish Heritage Urns ships worldwide. ■ For more details see www.irishheritageurns.com for more details.

HELPING THE VULNERABLE: Wendy Shackleton, pictured in the 1970s when she was working overseas
Where there’s a will, there’s a way to help HAVING spent much of her working life as a nurse overseas, Wendy Shackleton has witnessed first-hand the role that charities like Concern Worldwide can play in local communities. Inspired by what she has seen in countries including Nepal and Sudan, and by her passion to help, Wendy wanted to make a lasting difference to future generations by remembering
Concern in her Will. “Concern’s work and values inspired me, because their efforts are ‘hands-on’ and incessant throughout the globe,” she says. Wendy’s amazing gift will help Concern’s future work tackling hunger with world’s poorest people. People just like Monica and her three-year-old daughter Deli, who live in Choma Ward in Zambia. A donation in death can tackle poverty and loneliness THE St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) is an international Christian voluntary membership organisation that tackles poverty and disadvantage by helping and supporting vulnerable people. You may be very familiar with the SVP in Ireland but not realise that our heritage in England and Wales extends back to 1844. According to Mother Teresa, the greatest disease in the West today is loneliness. Members of the SVP visit individuals and families where they are living, offering comfort to the bereaved, practical help or simply friendship over a cup of tea. Millions of older people
live alone, the TV their only company. They welcome the regular visit from the SVP. More specific practical assistance, such as a lift to a hospital appointment, furniture or clothes can also be given. The SVP’s ‘one-to-one’ approach is possible thanks to the energy and commitment of nearly 10,000 volunteer members who, motivated by their faith, work to help the most vulnerable in their communities. Each year these volunteers make almost half a million visits to homes throughout the country from Plymouth to Newcastle. The work of the members is extended into
the local community in a very visible way through our community shops, furniture stores and advice centres. In recent years, involvement in food banks has dramatically increased. While combatting social isolation is the main focus, the SVP helps in myriad ways — we sometimes pay for funeral costs, for example, or help with travel costs when someone is stranded in England and needs the fare to return to Ireland. For those who are looking for a charity to support in lieu of flowers, the SVP is an ideal choice, because of the variety of support offered to those in need.
When we lose a loved one, it can be helpful to remember them in a meaningful way. A gift given in their memory can often bring consolation at a time of grief. The St Vincent de Paul Society has been working throughout England and Wales since 1844, battling isolation and relieving poverty. Our 10,000 volunteer members made 500,000 visits to over 80,000 people last year. In Memoriam donations can be made in place of flowers at a funeral, or to commemorate a special day such as a birthday or anniversary. Donations given in memory of a loved one will ensure that the SVP can continue in its mission to help those most in need. www.svp.org.uk/InMemoriam SVP, 9 Larcom St, SE17 1RX
