AN IRISH POST EIGHT-PAGE SPECIAL ON WESTPORT AND CO. MAYO
Wonderful WESTPORT
Winner of… 1 Best Place to live in Ireland 2 Tidiest Large Town 2012 And just this week voted… 3 Best Town in Ireland
Peter Hynes, Mayo County Manager.
I
N a way it’s entirely fitting that a Mayo man should have appeared on the front cover of prestigious US magazine Time above the strapline which read: “what the rest of Europe can learn from him”. Although Ireland is a long way from being out of the financial woods, the economy is much further along the road to recovery than say that of Greece or Spain. And the man from the west, Enda Kenny, is getting much of the credit. Appropriate, because the county of Mayo itself is leading the way back to prosperity, in particular the town of Westport. Peter Hynes, Mayo County Manager, is quite clear about the reasons for the surge in Westport’s fortunes, and the increasing confidence in its business sector. “It’s a special town, it’s exceptionally well-managed, and it has become a very attractive proposition for investment.” Well, he would say that, one might be tempted to say, but Peter has the figures to back up his optimism. “We have over 90 community groups working in the
town who are not only very active, but who co-operate fully with each other and with the county council.” Groups such as Comhairle na nÓg Mhaigheo, which, supported by Mayo County Development Board, has developed into a vibrant working group for young people in the county. It’s seen as an important forum for all issues effecting young people in Mayo and beyond. At the other end of the age spectrum Active Retirement in Westport ensures that a valuable facility — the town’s older people — can contribute to the rich culture of the town. There are sports clubs, a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, drama clubs, folk clubs, and of course the backbone of any Irish town, the GAA. On the economic front, Peter Hynes points out that Westport has managed to attract many high profile businesses to the town including the likes of Allergan Pharmaceuticals. A subsidiary of the Californian company of the same name, its current facility has grown to over 500,000 sq/ft on a 30 acre campus and
includes state-of-the-art chemistry, microbiology and stability laboratories. Westport was chosen as the centre for many reasons: first of all the quality of life is excellent, communications are very advanced, and there is a very skilled workforce who can speak English, the latter almost a must in high quality technology. The above are also the reasons that the Lafferty Group, a London-based banking education, research and publishing company, is to locate key educational and publishing activities for the global banking industry in the town. Some 40 jobs will be created over the next three years, with the support of IDA Ireland. The main thrust of the company in Westport will centre round the research and content division of the International Academy of Retail Banking (IARB). This is a new Lafferty enterprise that began its international activities in 2011 and now has highprofile clients in over 20 countries. The Lafferty Group was founded over 30 years ago by Roscommon man, Michael Lafferty, so he is familiar with
Connacht and knows it’s a good place to do business in. Charles Hughes Ltd, Portwest, is another Irish business. Starting out in 1904, it is now under the stewardship of the third generation of the Hughes family. The firm is a manufacturer and retailer of all manner of outdoors, sporting and work clothing and associated needs. The company caters for everyone from complete beginners to sports professionals. There are currently two stores in Westport, one in High Street, Galway and one in Suffolk Street, Dublin and a franchise shop has opened in Dundalk, Co. Louth. Portwest also open a specialist surf Shop in Lahinch during the Easter holidays and summer. The plan is to open many more in the next couple of years, all over the country. Brands stocked include Berghaus, Roxy, Billabong, Rip Curl, Animal, O’Neills, Gelert, Gill, Trespass, Didriksons, Ice Peak, Trespass, Hi Tech Skins and Protest. The company naturally stocks its own brand as well. In addition to this varied collection of
companies ranging from banking to sportswear, Westport has long had one more powerful string to its bow — the tourist industry. For centuries this has been a destination for visitors; in the early days from Britain and the US; latterly from all over the world. William Thackeray said of Clew Bay: “The islands in the bay, which was of a gold colour, look like so many dolphins and whales basking there.” Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick, Westport House, and of course the town itself are all huge draws for tourists. There is a theory that another early visitor a French architect, who arrived with General Humbert in 1798, designed the town giving its distinctly continental air, its je ne sais quoi if you will. It certainly is one of the most attractive towns in the country, with fine architecture, beautiful surrounding countryside, restaurants, bars and traditional sessions going full throttle most days of the week. Whether its business of pleasure you’re after it seems that the advice “head west” was never more appropriate.

OHN Lennon knew a beautiful place when he saw one. Looking out from Westport over Clew Bay some 45 years ago, he fell in love with the place and promptly bought one of the 400 or so islands that speckle the bay — Dorinish, washed by the waters of the Atlantic. John, who was so besotted by Ireland and Irish traditional music that he had a set of uilleann pipes made for him in Belfast, owned the island until his death. Now the 19-acre island, with panoramic views around Clew Bay, is up for sale for €300,000 (£240,000), complete with a fresh water well, the ruins of an old house, and incomparable tranquility. Imagine! Even with the on-going property slump, it’s likely the island will go under
the hammer fairly quickly; so if you’re thinking of relocating you’d better be quick. The Beatle wasn’t the only one taken with the view — many writers and poets over the years have been similarly moved by the panorama, and no wonder. Situated at the southerly corner of Clew Bay, Westport looks out onto the Atlantic straight across to America, with only Dorinish Island and its 399 or so neighbours in the way. It was from here that W.M. Thackeray described the scene: “The islands in the bay, which was of a gold colour, look like so many dolphins and whales basking there.” He summarised his experience in Westport by saying, “It is the most beautiful place in the world.”

Visit Westport House WESTPORT House and Country Park is one of the finest examples in Ireland of an early 18th century house. Designed by the famous architects Richard Cassels and James Wyatt in the 18th century, Westport House is considered one of Ireland’s most beautiful historic homes open to the public. Situated in an impressive parkland setting with a lake, terraces, gardens and magnificent views overlooking Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, Achill, Clare Island and Croagh Patrick, it was built and still owned by the Browne family, direct descendants of the 16th century Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley, or Granuaille. Children are well catered for with train rides, pedaloes, log flume rides etc. Immerse yourself in Westport’s history “SITUATED in a 19th century building, the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, traces the history of the planned town of Westport and the Clew Bay area from pre-Christian times to the present,” says the local tourism brochure, implying that the town was planned out in pre-Christian times, which I believe is doubtful. the usually accepted record of events: The town centre was designed by James Wyatt in 1780, in the Georgian architectural style. Its layout follows the medieval principles of urban design introduced by the Normans in the 13th century. But the heritage centre does boast a fascinating higglety pigglety collection of artefacts — including flachters and scraws for turf cutting, coins, ancient postcards, stamps and documents. In fact, with the exception of the afore-mentioned flachters and scraws, more or less the contents of your office drawer. But that’s in no way to dismiss. I’m all for small museums; and this one does the job perfectly. Take a hike or a cycle ride THE Great Western Greenway, a former railway line has been reopened as a hiking and cycling trail, stretching from Westport to Achill Island. You can do it on an electric bike from Electric Escapes — note, an electric bike doesn’t mean you don’t pedal; it’s electrically assisted, which means that instead of tootling along at 6mph, you’ll whizz along at 10, or even 12 mph. You can hire an ordinary bike from Clew Bay Bike Hire, who will pick you up at given points and bring you back again. Either way, the scenery is superb and the exercise exhilarating. WESTPORT
Mal Rogers visits Westport To be accurate, there are some 435 islands in total in the azure waters of Clew Bay — or as a local put it to me: one for each day of the year, with, er, a few left over. Now in describing the sea as ‘azure’ I use the term imaginatively, in the same way that Thackeray, presumably, used the word gold. Because as you will be aware, clouds are not unknown in this neck of the woods. True there was a tentative smudge of sun as I walked up Toberbrendan for a better view of the surroundings, but the squelchy ground underfoot suggested that this was something of a rare event. The scenery is breathtaking, and Westport itself is a handsome place, still recognisably Georgian, and with
a distinctly cosmopolitan air. There is a theory that a French architect, who arrived with General Humbert in 1798, designed the town giving it its je ne sais quoi, if you’ll pardon my French. With scenery as dramatic as that which surrounds Westport, the town is of course firmly on the tourist trail and a target for showbiz types and rock stars looking for seclusion and secrecy. Throw in a good legend as well such as that of Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen or St Patrick setting up business here in 441AD, and the place is irresistible.

Best Place to Live in Ireland and is one of Ireland’s most popular towns. Achill Island, beloved of artists, and lesser known areas such as The Lakes District in the south of the county or Erris and the Mullet Peninsula in the North are well worth exploring. Wonderful WESTPORT
People make Westport the top place to live Cllr Ollie Gannon, Cathaoirleach Westport Town Council, reflects on the town winning the Irish Times’ Best Place to Live in Ireland Award 2012
T
HIS award is of huge significance to us here in Westport. The focus was on people and community. Our town is very fortunate to have a large number of voluntary organisations, 97 in fact, that give up their time for the benefit of all who live here. It is this effort by so many people on a daily basis that makes Westport the place it is. All these organisations have a common goal, which is to instil a sense of pride, but more importantly a sense of participation. This is what makes Westport the unique place it is. Winning national awards is something every town in Ireland aspires to. Here in Westport we have won the National Tidy Town’s award on three occasions, and have retained our gold medal status in this competition every year. We are also a listed heritage town and are very proud of our excellent facilities ranging from our award-winning greenway, to our leisure outlets. All these combine to make Westport a very attractive location. The friendliness and welcoming nature of our people is another big factor in making our town a great place in which to live. It would be remiss of me not to
acknowledge the vision of so many people in Westport, who in the 1950s and 1960s, when unemployment was rampant in Ireland, decided to adopt a get-upand-go approach, and laid the foundation for much of the achievements we have witnessed over the past number of years. I also have to acknowledge local man John O’Callaghan who entered Westport into the Best Place to Live competition. Without John’s foresight, we would not be where we are today.
“

The local company with global appeal BY NIALL O’SULLIVAN MEET Portwest… from Westport. The company began life in 1904 as a small retail shop in the Mayo town founded by Charles Hughes. Today, Portwest is a leading figure in the international workwear market, making stylish, comfortable and highquality clothing for the workplace. Staying true to its Westport roots, the company uses Croagh Patrick as its logo and benefits from the ongoing involvement of a third generation of Hughes brothers — Cathal, Harry and Owen. “Portwest is also headquartered in Westport,” says Harry, one of Portwest’s directors. “On top of that, we live in Westport and are very proud of the town. After all, it is the best place to live in Ireland.” Following a legacy established by Charles, who helped to employ over 500 Irish people in the depressed 1930s, Portwest has continued to grow despite Ireland’s recent economic troubles. “Portwest has survived the crisis because it operates in a global market. We now distribute to over 60 countries and our unique collection of workwear protects people all over the world in many diverse industries and situations,” Harry says.
Portwest’s flagship store is located right in the heart of Westport on Bridge Street. With Ireland’s economy slowly starting to show signs of recovery, Portwest is looking to expand its market even further in the near future. Their new 1,000 person factory in Bangladesh joins existing sites in Ireland, Britain and China. But regardless of their aspirations, Harry and Portwest have no intention of leaving Westport behind. “We look forward to continuing to enjoy the quality of life and the environment here, which we would not get in big cities,” he says.

Wonderful WESTPORT
Find the perfect property in charming Mayo When it comes to the property market Mayo has much to offer. Mayo is located on Ireland’s west coast and is often described as one of Ireland’s hidden treasures. Home to more than 120,000 people and 86 towns and villages, it has plenty to offer those in search of a holiday home getaway, a family house or a retirement haven in Ireland. Mayo is easily accessible through its airport Ireland West Airport Knock, which offers direct flights from Dublin, Britain and Continental Europe. And for those who might be encouraged to learn their cúpla focail, Mayo is also a cultural gem with several Irishspeaking communities (Gaeltachts) as well as musicians, dancers and artists of all kinds. But Mayo is no newcomer. Its 5,000 years of history is reflected in numerous monuments throughout the county including Neolithic tombs and sites, abbeys, castles and much more. Other areas of interest to be found in Mayo includes the Ceide Fields,
Foxford Woollen Mills and the Museum of Country Life as well as the birthplace of many historical individuals such as Admiral Browne, founder of the Argentine navy, and Mayo’s pirate queen, Grace O’Malley. Mayo is home to Croagh Patrick, which is also known as Ireland’s Holy Mountain. St. Patrick’s pilgrimage to the mountain is commemorated annually on the last Sunday of July by more than 20,000 pilgrims who come from all over the world. No less important is the Marian Shrine at Knock, site of the 1879 apparition and Ballintubber Abbey which presents a Passion Play every Easter.
