Well, what fun we have had putting together this summer Wealth Edition. Jamie Fisher in particular had a wonderful time being invited to spend a day enjoying a private tour of the Ferrari, Meridien Modena state of the art Service Centre, you can read all about his amazing trip on page 22. My month has been a little different but no less enjoyable, read about my relaxed dining at Café Zephyr on page 34 and then I had the absolute delight of listening to the story of little Beth Clark who was born with a facial haemangioma and the challenges the family have been through. This is a heart-warming story of trial and triumph - on page 12. Continuing with the wealth theme, Mark Shields looks at differing aspects of wealth; there are those that conclude, health is wealth…Mark examines this. Lorraine Pannetier also touches on this particular aspect, whilst Martin Flageul investigates the world of wine investment and Stephen Cohu talks about his involvement in a lucrative industry.

Arts & Culture Library Events ~ Summer Reading Challenge starts Jersey Library is calling for children to sign up to read six books this summer as part of Mischief Makers, Summer Reading Challenge 2018. The Summer Reading Challenge asks 411 year olds to borrow and read any six library books over the summer. The theme for the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge is Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved children's title Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary. Children will explore a map of Beanotown to find a hidden treasure chest full of pranks and become ultimate mischief makers! As children read library books for the Summer Reading Challenge, they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. By adding these stickers to their map, young readers will help Dennis, Gnasher and friends solve clues and discover the treasure, having lots of fun and adventures along the way. To take part in Mischief Makers, all children need to do is sign up at the Town, Branch or Mobile library where they will be given a colourful collector’s map of Beanotown to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey. Friday 13 July – Saturday 8 September

Pop-up event ‘Meet The Author’ at LoveBird, Jersey War Tunnels Author of ‘Occupation Reconciliation’, The Life and Times of Michael Ginns MBE, Juanita Shield-Laignel, will be staging an event with LoveBird at the War Tunnels during July. Come along and ‘Meet the Author’ and take away your very own signed and personalised copy of this beautifully written, heart-warming book… Born in 1927, Michael was destined to become one of Jersey’s foremost historians and authorities on the isle’s Occupied history and his efforts were rewarded when he received an MBE in 1995. Michael wrote extensively about his interment and the subsequent twinning with the once imprisoning town of Bad Wurzach, but little else of his life had been documented, so with experience of interviewing for The Jerseylife, Juanita set about chronicling Michael’s life for all to read. Sadly Juanita’s time with Michael was cut short when he passed away on 2nd February 2017, but in this book Juanita feels satisfied, the stories Michael really wanted to share, have been told.

“An important local book, a fascinating blend of a compelling personal story and our Island’s story, and deserves even more recognition!” Paul Darroch ~ Author of ‘Jersey: The Hidden Histories’ Sunday 15th July between 11:30am – 2:30pm LoveBird Gifts & Pottery Studio, Jersey War Tunnels, Les Charriers Malorey St Lawrence Ice Age Island - Les Varines Dig Site and Pop-Up Museum Come and see the latest work of the Ice Age team as we continue our live archaeology at Les Varines. Choir of St Johns to come to Jersey In recent years, The Gents have had the privilege to perform at such venues as London’s Cadogan Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and recent performances have taken them to Bangkok, Singapore, America, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Italy and South Africa. In addition to frequent broadcasts with the full Choir of St John’s College, they were recent guests on Radio 3’s In Tune. They also enjoy regularly leading workshops in the UK and abroad.

Jersey charity Music in Action is excited to welcome The Gentlemen of St John's College Cambridge Choir to perform concerts around the island and also at the first Musical Fun Run over the weekend of 20t to 22 July 2018. Formed of the Choral Scholars of the world-renowned, Gramophone award-winning Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, they have enjoyed a remarkably busy schedule of concerts and recordings for over forty years. Aged between 18 and 23, The Gents are noted for their versatility with a repertoire ranging from early sacred music to folksongs to more modern close- harmony, making them equally at home in churches, on the concert platform or in the dining hall. Music in Action wish to encourage the benefits of healthy lifestyle – singing promotes good health. And of course smiling and laughter is a major factor as well. The Gentlemen of St John’s will be singing at St Ouen’s Church on the Friday 20th July 2018 as well as the Town Church on 21st July. Then on the Sunday 22 July walkers and runners can listen to the Gents sing at a Musical Fun Run at 8.30 in the morning also featuring other bands around the race starting from Chateau Vermont – the Jersey Music Academy near Five Oaks. After singing choral classics at the church service in Gouray church in Gorey there will be a choral masterclass. It will be a full itinerary and a great weekend of music. Described by BBC Music Magazine as “an immaculately blended, responsive, interactive consort”, The Gentlemen of St John’s are famed for their “pure tone and controlled excellence” (Counterpoint Music). Music in Action Chairman James Mews stated, “It is a real privilege to welcome the Gents from St Johns to Jersey. We have such an amazing tradition of choral music in Jersey. To have the opportunity to hear one of the finest choirs in the world is going to be an exceptional evening. And to run to their beat is a first for us in Jersey at the Musical Fun Run.”

These will be concerts not to be missed, with the choir singing renaissance polyphony and contemporary sacred music written especially for the Gents, by composers such as Tallis, Byrd and Lassus, as well as spiritual arrangements, and brand new in-house arrangements of Gershwin standards and Beach Boys hits. As well as the classical concerts there will also be a Musical Fun Run organised by Music in Action. Covering a 5km course the runners and walkers will be entertained by musical acts including St Johns College choir Race organiser Emily Andrews stated, “It will be so much fun. We’ve had the colour run, lots of serious runs, the moonlight walks and now something totally different. The Musical Fun Run is for all the family. Support education in Jersey by signing up and enjoying running or walking around the course on Sunday 22nd July.” Tickets for the concerts can be bought from Eventbrite by searching for St Johns. INTERVIEW

‘Oh, what these… oh they’re nothing, just my birthmarks’…says Beth… …The Beautiful Social Butterfly Imagine if you will, being a lady in your mid to late thirties, you have a lovely husband, a little older than you, who has two grown daughters and hitherto feeling his family was complete, took strides to ensure no future children. Very happy and in love, but wanting a child of your own, IVF is the only way you can become a Mum. Your first attempt fails, but joy of joys you are blessed with the most gorgeous baby daughter the next time you try. A day after your precious tiny bundle is born, a passing Doctor comments on the bruising from the forceps, re-assuring you it will go down. Bemused, you inform him there were no forceps involved. He replies “Oh, it must be a birthmark”. The course of your life, or at least the way you imagined it, has changed forever…and so unfolds this most beautiful and heart-warming yet challenging life story….an interview with Andrea Clark by Juanita Shield-Laignel

I had met five year old Beth, briefly, introduced by her father who is the caretaker of the school where my own son attends. She struck me as being the sweetest of little girls. Knowing the challenges the family have been presented with, I tentatively asked if they would like to share their story with others and was thrilled when they agreed and humbled by Andrea’s words…. “When Beth was first born, she looked a bit battered and bruised and her nose was a bit red but then babies that have just come through the birth canal can be. She had just had an amazing journey into the world so we thought nothing of it and none of the nursing staff said anything. Then a passing Doctor who hadn’t seen us before, looked at the side of her face and said “oh that’s probably from the forceps” and I said “but she didn’t have forceps”. Then the ‘bruising’ gradually developed over a few days and it became clear we were dealing with something entirely different.” “We were soon told Beth had birthmarks called haemangiomas which immediately sent us into the normal and expected turmoil of ‘WHY’. Why should a little girl get them and in the middle of her face, it just seemed so cruel…but when I’m thrown into a crisis I just get on with it. Tony struggled a little bit more, but I thought, we are just getting to know her and she is just getting to know us, so I wanted to keep calm for her sake. I didn’t want any of our anxiety to rub off on her.” “Two weeks later it was her first Christmas and the haemangiomas had fully developed. Then between Christmas and New Year, her nose started to bleed so the Health Visitor sent us to Robin Ward where they were amazing with Beth and confirmed part of the haemangioma was inside her nose which was causing the bleeding. They were also concerned she might not be feeding properly as it was under her top lip. I reassured them her feeding had been fine.” The general consensus with haemangiomas is to leave them be as more often than not, they diminish of their own accord and generally have completely disappeared by the time the child is six

12 | www.life-mags.com

or seven. Clinically, they are just an over growth of blood vessels near the surface of the skin. You just have to be careful not to knock them as they can bleed quite profusely….in Beth’s case, because they were inside her nose and mouth there was more concern. Andrea continued.

INTERVIEW

“The specialists at the hospital were right as the nose ones were impeding her breathing so she had to have treatment which started with beta blockers because they help starve the blood vessels of oxygenated blood, causing them to die back. This sent us into a whole new realm of turmoil; did we really want our daughter to be given medication that could alter her heart rhythm?” “Robin Ward wanted confirmation from Great Ormond Street and it just so happens I had taken Beth to visit my parents in the UK when she was six weeks old and we got the call to go then, which was great timing. Tony flew over to join us and we were just so pleased they agreed with everything Jersey hospital had told us which was so reassuring….that they were on the same page. They also said haemangiomas can be linked to underlying problems with internal organs so Beth had to have an MRI scan to check her liver, heart, brain and eyes. One of the birthmarks was across her eye and could have had an effect on her sight.” “Because she was so tiny and they need the patient to stay as still as possible, I had to go through with her and hold her. It was just awful keeping a tiny baby still and she did cry and wriggle a little but they got everything they needed. We had to wait a couple of weeks between, which was hard, but when the results came back, all her organs were completely clear which was such a huge relief.” “She started the beta blockers and said it would be six weeks before we noticed a difference. They increased the dosage gradually and she was monitored with her blood pressure every week. Naturally our hearts were in our mouths as they say, but all went well. I remember saying to Beth on more than one occasion “I don’t know what I’m doing and you don’t know what you’re doing so we shall just do it together!” By the third week she was on the maximum dose required for haemangiomas in children. Nothing seemed to be happening and then almost six weeks to the day as predicted, it was Easter Sunday and her lips went blue which looked a bit disconcerting but we had been told this was the blood vessels dying back, so it was finally working.” “Family Nursing sent someone to take her blood pressure without fail, every week, even in the snow someone walked to see us. I was so impressed. She took the beta blockers for about two years and then the team at the hospital told us the medication had done as much work as it could and to reduce the birthmarks further we would be looking at Laser Surgery. Because of anaesthetics and needing to be a certain weight, we were told it couldn’t be done until she was at least three years old. As it happened we were told Beth would have to have no sun exposure for a year before laser surgery so this gave us plenty of time to prepare.” “So in that year between March and October we smothered her in sun-cream and bought her a fabulous range of sun hats which luckily really suit her. Even now she has lots of gorgeous hats. Also the child cannot get any sun on their face for up to 12 months after surgery. So again…sun block goes with us everywhere and Beth now has a beautiful collection of wide brimmed hats - super cool!”

“I have to say at this point that Beth never once complained. She has always been amazing and just taken it all in her stride. I guess that’s partly because she has never known any different and partly because we’ve always tried to remain positive. When we started going to Great Ormond Street for the Laser Surgery, we would make a big adventure out of it all and visit my parents as well. The first time we went out on the red eye and although we made it to the hospital in time we felt this was an added pressure we didn’t need, so the next time we made more of it and went the day before.” “Amazingly, my employers were very supportive, allowing me to have the time to go back and forth to appointments in London and appointments in Jersey….I am so very grateful for that as we were told Beth would have to have four separate sessions over a number of months. They give you a leaflet to explain the procedure and in there it says some bruising may occur. continues overleaf...

INTERVIEW

Despite this warning nothing had prepared us for the extent of the bruising when they pulled back the curtain for us to see her after surgery… we were horrified. Luckily Beth was still sleepy and didn’t witness our reaction. We did report our reaction as feedback and have been working with GOSH to come up with better information to prepare other mums and dads. Beth herself wasn’t that bothered; she saw them in the mirror the next day and then just carried on playing and bouncing on the bed as if nothing had happened.” “We had an added complication though as right from birth, Beth seemed to have a lot of congestion and I know lots of children do, but this was excessive. She was referred to ENT over here and they discovered her tonsils and adenoids were hugely inflamed which coupled with her haemangioma was really making breathing difficult, so poor Beth had to have those removed too. They had to be very careful not to go anywhere near her birthmark and they did a great job as her breathing was much improved after surgery. This was in between a further three Laser treatments and each time the bruising was less. It has worked beautifully and now all she has left is a small amount above her lip.” “We did however have yet another challenge to deal with, as whilst all this was going on, Beth was bitten by a little dog on her top lip. Because of the haemangioma the bleeding was horrendous and the scaring left runs along her lip. The Laser Surgery has helped diminish the scar but none of us, not even the surgeons, knows what she will be left with. We were advised to leave everything settle down now over the next couple of years.”

“Beth is now five and in reception at St Clements, she started last September and loves it. In her own family and surroundings she doesn’t bat an eyelid but there is a slight self-consciousness when people look at her. Just the other day a little girl was staring at swimming, so I just said hello and she started chatting. Some of our best conversations have been with children who have been really interested. About a year ago a little girl was proper staring at Beth and this girl said “What’s that on her face?” so I said to Beth “are you going to tell her or shall I” she said “Mummy can you?” So I said “Oh that’s just her birthmarks,” and that’s how we’ve always taught Beth how to respond… and the little girl thought about it and said “oh I’ve got one of those on my bottom” and then giggled and then Beth giggled and they were fine and giggling and chatting. I think we have always seen through Beth’s birth marks, if that makes sense... me especially. My dad says she has always smiled through her eyes and eye contact is always important especially with a baby...... and that’s what we did. Beth is a social butterfly. She is kind, caring and beautiful inside and out and such a happy little girl, we are so very lucky and proud of her.” With this I naturally had a tear in my eye and Andrea did too. I loved how pragmatic she seems to have been and how Beth’s well-being was always of the utmost importance; this shone through completely. I wish the whole family well and look forward to hearing of Beth’s progress in years to come.

WINE

The Alternative Investment - Wine by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant If you are considering investing some of your savings, you might consider something other than bonds, property, precious metals, fine art, antiques or the stock market - why not wine? The very top wines have repeatedly out-performed many of the traditional investment items Four Rules to a Successful Wine Portfolio The first rule is to seek professional expert advice and only invest in top named wines in the best vintages. The second rule is to ensure that the wine is kept in its original packaging whenever possible. Rule three is to be prepared to pay up for the most elite and prestigious producers’ wines. Finally, rule four, make sure that your investment wine is stored in absolutely ideal conditions. Invest in the Best It will probably come as no surprise to you to discover that out of the top value twenty-four wines sold at auction in 2017, twenty of them were French – ten from Bordeaux and ten from Burgundy. Collectors will only want the most prestigious wines that have a record of performing well at auction over the decades. Bordeaux wines that always out perform their rivals include Chateaux: Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Petrus, Haut-Brion, Margaux, Cheval-Blanc and Le Pin. The very top wine to buy for investment is Domaine de la Romanée Conti followed by other Burgundy Domaines: Armand Rousseau, Henri Jayer, Leroy, Leflaive, Liger-Belair, Comte de Vogue and Coche-Dury. Original Packaging Generally, it is better to retain your wine in its original wooden cases which will guarantee a premium as time goes on. Many of the top Burgundy and Bordeaux wines which were traditionally packed in dozens can now be supplied in six bottle packs which will prove less expensive for your investment. Depending on how much wine you purchase, it would be possible to release one case in the same way that you might sell a few shares but retain some for the future. Whilst it is true to say that original cases are a better option, loose single bottles can also prove to be a good investment and you could even be tempted to drink something rather special if the mood takes you.

16 | www.life-mags.com

Rarer the Better Collectors are more willing to pay higher prices for top wines that are produced in very small quantities and therefore rarer. They will also look for well-known labels that have consistently fetched higher prices over the decades due to their exceptional quality and reputation. The older a wine becomes, the less bottles there are because people do drink it! Old, rare bottles of wine are more likely to surge in price as time goes on but buying young wines en primeur in the best vintages is often a good way to start an investment cellar. Ideal Storage If you do not have ideal storage conditions at home you must consider investing in a temperature and humidity-controlled unit. Alternatively ask a quality wine merchant or an auction house with excellent storage facilities if they can store your wines at an agreed charge. Whatever your decision, quality wines must be cellared correctly at no more than 12 degrees Celsius with humidity at around 70%. Investing in humidity and temperature control is well worth it when you consider the value of your fine wine collection.

Remember, whilst you can appreciate fine art, cherish precious metal, respect antiques and admire property – if their value diminishes you cannot drink them. Invest in wine!

How to Attract Wealth Using Mind Power! Mark Shields Explains... It's no secret - the global economy has taken a major turn in the last few years. On a personal level, I can't tell you how many clients I’ve worked with that have had to change jobs, take a pay cut, even downsize their family home.

NLP has for a long time been thought of as a sudo science however I have a background as a business executive in jersey and have found NLP to be an incredible change technique and witnessed first hand the incredible results it can produce.

Maybe you have concerns about your own career and financial security.

This isn't simply theory, it's a scientific fact backed up from research from powerful organizations like the US Army and the most credible universities throughout the world.

Wealth means different things to different people and can show itself in all shapes and sizes. By taking a broader approach with wealth creation, you can have the abundance you deserve in your life. The personal freedom that accompanies wealth will become a reality. ATTRACTING WEALTH Over the last few years a new philosophy has developed being made visible to the public through films and books. Rhonda Byron’s The Secret, and Esther and Jerry Hicks, Ask And It Is Given are 2, to name but a few. Both of these books and subsequent films explain something known today as the law of attraction. As a long time believer/practitioner of modern psychology and NLP, it has been exciting to see these principles introduced into the mainstream. NLP of course works on the power of the subconscious mind and bringing about a reality based upon our own individual perceptions. We have the ability to connect with other people and bring about certain physical realisations by programming our deep level blueprint of how we believe life should be.

18 | www.life-mags.com

If you stop and think about it, you could probably remember a few times when there was evidence of this in your own life. Have you ever had the sensation of someone watching you and turned to find someone staring at you? Did you ever think it would be nice to see an old friend that you lost contact with and then they show up, almost as if out of nowhere? Of course, by accepting you have control over your life and success by using your mind to create the reality you desire, will lead you to more abundance and personal wealth than you have ever experienced before. This is made very apparent in Harv Eker’s famous book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, offering a subconscious thought based financial blueprint to ensure our wealth and financial success. The book reveals the missing link between those that want success and those that achieve it. It explores how and why some people seem to access wealth easily and automatically while others seemed destined for a life of financial struggle. Is it simply luck or coincidence that 2% of the world’s population own 98% of global wealth. Rhonda Byron’s book the secret works very much on the premise our wealth subconscious blueprint that contains our deep level

3. Remove personal blockages and limiting beliefs - This is where most spiritual attraction approaches fall short. A healthy person (mentally, emotionally, spiritually) can put intention into what they want, and the desired outcome arrives quickly and with little hassle. If you've persistently put intention into the wealth and lifestyle you want to create, and you consistently do not get the results you want, it may be time to examine how you may be blocking your desire from manifesting. Doubts, negative expectations, low self esteem and hopelessness all block the flow of subconscious wealth attraction. This is why clearing these personal obstacles has to be your top priority if you are serious about attracting wealth.

thoughts, values and beliefs will enable us to create and manifest the wealth we desire. To create this wealth and abundance we need a complete, step-by-step approach to gain control of what we want to attract into our lives. Most of the law of attraction process occurs on a deep unconscious level. The good news is that we can become aware of and take control of our subconscious. There are techniques and more detailed training approaches that are effective, some of which I will cover in a few moments. An important point to note is we play a large role in what we manifest in our lives everyday. What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Napoleon Hill Author ‘Think and Grow Rich’ WEALTH ATTRACTION - FIVE PROVEN METHODS YOU CAN IMMEDIATELY USE IN YOUR LIFE For over 25 years I have studied the impact our deep level thought processes can have on attracting what we want and equally what we don’t want into our lives. From my experience, here are some of the most important steps you will have to take in order to truly spiritually attract wealth 1. Gain a clear outcome focused vision of the amount of wealth and the resulting lifestyle you want to attract When you aren't clear about what you want or you change your mind from moment to moment, you aren't likely to get good results.

4. Be Flexible, Have an Open Mind – Take control of your inner voice. Visualisation and affirmations are very powerful. Focus on what you can do, do deserve, can have, can achieve, rather than allow that nagging voice of doubt to creep in telling you you’re not good enough. The not good enough program blocks millions of people around the world from attracting wealth, abundance and personal success. You know what they say about “be careful what you wish for’ 5. Take one step at a time -Take small steps to test and develop your skill. Try something like attracting a new promotion at work or a slight increase in customers for you business. Visualize it. Affirm yourself. Build up the emotion within yourself. Each time you test the process and you are successful, your faith in the process strengthens. The stronger your faith in the process, the more power you gain in attracting what you want. Once your faith is strong, then start aiming for the big intentions such as the level of wealth that you've always dreamed about. Some years ago I wandered into an old book shopin my home town thinking about my future business possibilities and finances and picked up an old second hand book from the shelf of a charity shop called the millionaires mind by Harv Eker. It was only when I got home and opened it up I realised there was a message inside the front cover from the author Harv Eker. It wished me well and told me to rely on my intuition. How was that possible I remembered thinking to myself or perhaps it was the law of attraction making a point. Whatever it was it worked. Written by Mark Shields - Coach Educator Author Tel: 01462 431112 - www.nlpcourseschannelislands.com

2. Frequently align your conscious mind, your visual mind, your thoughts, and your emotions with what you want to create - Sit in a quiet place and picture yourself in your mind's eye accomplishing your financial goals as if they are already happening. See yourself having the abundance to start doing the things you've always wanted to do in life. When it comes to money, adjust your thinking to where you feel desire, joy, relief, and appreciation, not loneliness, frustration, or disbelief. Getting control over your emotions is especially important. You need to be emotionally in the ‘I have “ zone consistently and not the ‘ I don’t have zone which so many of us end up in. FERRARI 488 GTB By Jack Evans WHAT IS IT?: A new Ferrari is a pretty big deal. This is the 488 GTB, the latest high-performance offering from Maranello and a car designed to try and eclipse the awe-inspiring 458 Italia. That car was powered by a 4.5-litre naturally-aspirated V8. A true firecracker of an engine, it gave the 458 all the frenetic, tip-toe energy that you could want from an Italian supercar. The 488 GTB, in comparison, is powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Moving to forced induction was a big move for Ferrari, especially given the reputation set by the 458. However, with 661bhp and 760Nm on tap, the 488 isn't lacking in power.

LOOKS AND IMAGE: Make no mistake, the 488 GTB is a pretty looking car. With air intakes sitting in just the right places and a supremely low ride height, it looks just as you would want a supercar to look. Granted, it lacks the out-there styling you'd find on a Lamborghini, but there's little chance people won't notice you in the 488. Ferrari's image remains impressively strong, with good residuals and reputation meaning that wherever you go, people will stop and stare. That's no bad thing, but if you're looking for a car that'll take you under the radar, the 488 may not be the one for you.

SPACE AND PRACTICALITY: Despite being a low, two-seater sports car, the 488 GTB offers a decent amount of practicality. There's a boot in the nose of the car with a 230-litre capacity. It certainly provides enough room for two weekend bags, or a week's worth of shopping - if you're planning on taking your 488 to the supermarket. Inside, there's a cupholder and a tray for your keys and phone. There's also a small glovebox, which gives you a little bit of space for smaller items. A Ferrari supercar is never going to be practical, but the 488 is easier to get along with than you'd expect.

BEHIND THE WHEEL: Here's where things get really interesting. In the low-slung driving position you feel perfectly set up. It isn't often you get into a car and find yourself in the right place immediately, but that's just what you get in the 488. With a large windscreen and slim pillars there's an excellent view of the road ahead too, which makes it a little more comfortable to drive around especially in towns. Up and running, you immediately notice just how easy the 488 is to drive. Yes, the steering wheel mounted buttons are a little complicated - the lights, indicators and washers are operated here - but after you

Facts at a glance Model: Ferrari 488 GTB Engine: 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 Transmission: Seven-speed dual-clutch automatic Performance: 0-60mph in 3.0 seconds, top speed 205mph Power: 661bhp, 760Nm Economy: 4.8mpg (combined) Emissions: 260g/km CO2

work that out, it feels quite simple to whisk along. You could almost be fooled into thinking it normal - until you press the accelerator, that is. The way the 488 gains pace is nothing short of ferocious, with each gear bringing with it another fierce wave of speed. Keep your foot in it, and you'll sail past licence-worrying speeds without even realising. Gearshifts are supremely quick, while the car's throttle response puts any idea that turbocharging negatively affects performance out of your mind. In figure terms, the 488 GTB will reach 60 in three seconds, and will carry on accelerating to a top speed of 205mph, which is fast in anyone's book. That incredible pace is well matched to a chassis that offers all the agility you could want and while the steering is quick, it makes for a car that eats up corner after corner. You still need to be on your toes however, as the large rear tyres fitted to the 488 have a tendency to break traction quite easily. Although fitted with cutting-edge traction control systems, the 488 still likes to remind you that it's a Ferrari - and should be treated with respect.

VALUE FOR MONEY: The 488 GTB retails for just under £185,000. However, few cars will actually cost this, as the options list is almost as impressive as the car's performance. Even the trademark Ross Corsa paint, which our test car came in, costs a frankly remarkable £7,104. However, when you contrast the car's price with its exceptional engine, controls and looks, it very quickly starts to look worth the money. Certainly, if you found yourself driving a Ferrari 488 GTB, you wouldn't worry about how much it cost - just how far you could drive it. WHO WOULD BUY ONE?: The 488 GTB is ideal for those who want a supercar with poise, pinpoint handling and addictive performance all wrapped up in a double-take body. There's no arguing that it's expensive, but then cars in this category are. Ferraris have been held with high esteem throughout history, and it's cars like the 488 GTB that keep this reputation going.

£3.5 million investment Seven new jobs including two apprentices Ferrari Global Aftersales Dealer of the Year Reduced service waiting times Hybrid vehicle servicing Only centre on the south coast to become an authorised Ferrari Classiche workshop

Family-owned motoring business, Meridien Modena, has invested £3.5 million in a new 14,000 sq ft, two floor, state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre, based near its showroom in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Located on the Hounsdown Business Park, the Ferrari service centre provides an additional servicing facility enabling the Meridien Modena team to complete restorations, pioneering technical refurbishments, as well as routine scheduled servicing on Ferrari vehicles. Creating seven new jobs including two full-time apprentice technicians from September, Meridien Modena will have in excess of 40 staff running the centre to ensure exceptional service is delivered to its nationwide customer base. With 13 service bays, scheduled service times will be dramatically reduced from a peak of six weeks to between three and five days. Two service bays will be dedicated to working on classic Ferrari’s which are more than 20 years old as Meridien Modena has officially been recognised by the Italian brand as one of only nine authorised Classiche workshops in the UK. The centre also includes a lounge for clients to relax and view the workshop through floor to ceiling glass. The centre has the capability to accommodate a total of 80 vehicles onsite, including a storage area to house 35 cars on the first floor. It has an array of the latest technology including lever-less tyre fitting equipment, integrated work tool stations delivering technicians with retractable oil, water, compressed air and power on demand to aid workshop efficiency. A large parts carousel system which will enable 3,000 parts to be stored, as well as high voltage special tooling to work on hybrid vehicles. Chris Ambrose, who is heading up the Ferrari service centre team as service manager, said: “The opening of this additional facility is an exciting development for Meridien Modena. This revolutionary facility has the newest technology available for customers, so they can rest assured that their car will be in good hands if it requires any work to be carried out or routine maintenance. “A key focal point in the centre of the workshop is a first-floor vehicle lift. The first-floor has 14 storage lifts which allows 35 vehicles to be stored to allow the workshop below to remain free flowing for daily work.”

Lyndhurst-based dealership had won the award in recognition of ‘hitting and exceeding various targets and for customer satisfaction throughout the year across the service and parts departments.’ Glenn Butt, director at Meridien Modena, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our new service centre to benefit our ever-growing client base. The significant investment in the new centre and its facilities ensures that we meet the exemplary standards expected from the Ferrari brand. “It is testament to the team’s hard work that we were awarded Ferrari Global Aftersales Dealer of the Year 2017. We were absolutely thrilled to receive the Ferrari Portofino V8 Engine, which is on display in our new service centre for customers to come along and see up close for themselves. “We are also proud to be the only centre on the south coast that will be able to offer the aftersales facility element of the Ferrari ‘Classiche’ service, a service which can be provided to classic and competition cars. At our new facility we’ll be able to provide all the mechanical repairs and inspections needed to restore or rebuild a classic Ferrari and ensure each vehicle complies with the original specifications. This is an incredibly exciting element for us, as previously all parts of the Classiche service were carried out in Maranello, Italy.”

A large seven metres by four metres sliding roof light over the kitchen on the top level means inside and outside living combine to allow the summer months to be truly appreciated. Natural light is maximised throughout to flood into the property.

INVESTING IN ART AND ANTIQUES

with Stephen Cohu

People often ask us what they should be buying now that will potentially make them a profit in future years. The one word answer to the question, “Do antiques and art make good investments?” is --- “perhaps”! No one can see into the future but of course armed with sufficient information and knowledge one might be able to predict which particular things are more likely to see gains and those which may see significant losses, even in the near term. Some areas of art and antiques have increased in value tenfold over the last 20 years but others have fallen by 90%! There will be losers and winners whatever your choice of investment, shares, property, stamps, art and antiques are no different. SHOULD YOU INVEST IN ART AND ANTIQUES? The answer to this question is of course, from my ever so slightly conflicted position, yes, but not for the reasons you may be thinking. Unless you are a professional investor you should not buy paintings, objects, furniture or items for any other reason than because you like them. You should not set out to buy things with the express goal of selling them for a profit at some time in the future because this may never happen. The investment you make is an investment in your own enjoyment of life and your surroundings. There is little point in living in an environment filled with things you do not enjoy simply because you hope they will make you money. You may get lucky and spot the next big thing before the rest of the market piles in and forces up prices. Buying for enjoyment means you don’t need to concern yourself with such matters. If and when you come to sell, if you get your money back or even a profit then this should be considered as a bonus rather than an expectation. PAST GAINS ARE NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE PROFITS The movement in values in the art and antiques market are driven primarily by fashion which in turn dictates demand. If something is fashionable then demand will be high and prices will be high also. When these items are no longer fashionable then prices may fall further than anyone would ever have imagined possible. Good examples are Victorian landscape paintings. Although many are of fine quality and undeniably attractive to look at, they simply do not meet the criteria of current taste which has swung almost entirely in the direction of contemporary works. It is of

A studio pottery bowl by Dame Lucy Rie, values are on the rise.

Furnishing for enjoyment rather than investment. course not that simple because demand will remain high for the finest works by the greatest artists of this period, although prices will be significantly lower than 20 or 30 years ago. Many Victorian “furnishing” pictures, perhaps worth £1500 thirty years ago might now be worth £100. There is nothing wrong with them, there is simply no demand. Another factor which drives demand is the usability of the item in question. A prime example of this would be the classic Georgian mahogany bureau. A handsome example in the year 2000 might have cost you £2000. With the advent of computers, tablets, mobile phones and email no one needs a bureau in which to keep their writing paper, envelopes, stamps or to store the current year’s bills and paperwork. Technology has killed demand and consequently a fine example could now be bought for perhaps £300, exceptional value for money and no less attractive than when it was worth six times as much. A reduction in room sizes has reduced demand for larger items of furniture as has the desire for fitted kitchens and bedrooms. Many of the above negatives are in fact positives for people interested in furnishing with antiques because it means they can own beautiful, interesting, robust and functional pieces at prices that make them accessible to everybody. continues overleaf...

SUPPLY AND DEMAND The above examples demonstrate how changes in demand have affected the price of cheaper and mid-range items which were purchased by householders who never expected them to lose value. The reduction in demand has coincided with an increase in supply as fewer pieces inherited by younger generations are retained in the family. Where prices are likely to take off is where demand is high and supply is limited. This will really only apply to desirable items where rarity is the key to success. Works of art which are unique and can’t be replicated should always prove a better investment, we can’t say for sure but by buying the best you can afford at this end of the market you will give yourself a much better chance of success. The works of art produced by the best known artists and sculptors have increased in price many times over in the last few years as the wealth of the world’s richest individuals has reached almost incomprehensible levels. Top works by artists such as Picasso have become stores of wealth and regularly achieve prices in tens and hundreds of millions. The recently discovered painting by Leonardo da Vinci depicting Christ entitled Salvator Mundi sold for US$450 million, purchased by the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Culture and Tourism, an extraordinary price for something with no intrinsic value. As the world’s wealthiest people force the prices of the rarest and most desirable artworks ever higher, the second tier of works is pulled upwards behind it. As investors can no longer afford the most expensive items they target the second tier of the market and some of these artists have seen their works rise in value from £10,000 to £100,000 in just a few years. This second tier, if you pick the right artist, is where significant gains could be made in the next decade. Of course when works fall out of favour prices can plummet. In the early century the works of the most famous pre-Raphaelite artists such as Edward Burne Jones and Dante Rossetti were so unpopular they were virtually being given away. The Mander family furnished their house, Wightwick Manor, with these works and for a small outlay now have a collection, 100 years later, worth tens of millions. However the average investor looking for a medium term gain doesn’t have 100 years to wait! Furthermore, as the collection is unlikely to ever be sold it has a true value of nothing! Few of us can however afford to invest at these levels but the same rules apply to less expensive items- don’t buy damaged or heavily restored items, don’t buy cheap items where you can go out and find another 500 exactly the same, always buy the best example you can afford. SELLING YOUR INVESTMENTS As stated above, only money in the bank or cash in your pocket actually has any real usable value, anything else has to be sold before the proceeds can be used for another purpose. A bit like the stock in my shop, it only really has a determinable value when someone buys it. Until sold, our stock are wonderful objects that we love to have around us but we can’t go the garage to fill the car with diesel and then offer a painting worth £80 as payment! Investments or possessions only have a value when they are sold, the same goes for all types of investment. 32 | www.life-mags.com

Salvator Mundi - Huge sums of money change hands at the very top of the market but these works are available to only a very few investors Shares in a company on the stock exchange might have a “value” of £50,000 one day. The next day the company declares bankruptcy and goes into administration, the shares becoming worthless. They only ever had a value of £50,000 if you had sold them the day before! Selling into a market where demand is high and supply is small should result in a high price. Where supply is large and demand is small you might be lucky to even sell it at all. This is where the investor is at the mercy of the market and the savvy buyer will only buy items he is sure will be easy to sell For us, when buying at auction, it is much better to buy lots where there is a lot of competition and prices are higher than expected. If you buy it very cheaply you are either lucky because the item was overlooked or more likely because no one else wanted it - that should ring alarm bells. Maybe buying these sorts of items will yield high returns in the future when demand picks up. Shall we look into our crystal ball to find out?! IN CONCLUSION Some antiques and certain artworks have proved to be exceptional investments over the last few years but generally at a level accessible to only very few people with significant sums at their disposal. Our advice is invest in your enjoyment of life by buying things that you like, not things that might make you money. You don’t have to spend a fortune to surround yourself with things you will enjoy looking at every day and who knows, when the time comes to pass these things on to a new passionate owner, you might even come away with a profit!

SWEET, NOT SOUR…

AT CAFÉ ZEPHYR From time to time it falls upon me as Editor to engage in the, not so shabby assignment, of a food review. Around this time last year, it was my great pleasure to fine dine at Sirocco’s and such was the success of the evening, the team at The Royal Yacht invited my husband and I to experience the rather more relaxed, yet equally enjoyable, Café Zephyr…. review by Juanita Shield-Laignel

Having only ever enjoyed pre or post-dinner drinks on the terrace at Café Zephyr, we deliberately entered through the internal doors from the Hotel proper and were surprised to note the café does not just consist of the bright bar area or the well frequented terraces, but also houses a comfortable restaurant-like area on the east side. In complete contrast to the hot pinks of Siroccos, the dining area in Café Zephyr is decorated in pleasing gentle, greens and taupes, with the most interesting lights hanging from the ceiling. Given the beautiful weather we were pleased a table had been reserved for us in full sun and between the outside terrace space and the bar…a perfect seat. Although mid-week there wasn’t a spare table in the house so the atmosphere was vibrant and buzzing. Pre-dinner drinks consisted of a rather delicious Amaretto Sour; highly recommended to the uninitiated and containing syrup among several other ingredients, making it rather sweet, not sour at all. We’d called ahead to remind Chef my husband is a confirmed vegetarian but sadly allergic to goats cheese (a preferred ingredient in many veggie dishes) so Chef very kindly prepared what he described as ‘nibbles’ consisting of a smorgasbord of aubergine and cauliflower delights. Wooden platters arrived adorned with Mediterranean inspired, honey yogurt covered aubergine and another with Asian inspired Miso and Ginger, also Cauliflower Popcorn, with Truffled Tofu and Baba Ganoush (whipped up aubergine, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, cumin, olive oil and flat-leaf parsley – just in case you were wondering); all very creative and tasty to boot. We were handed the Café Zephyr menus to browse through. My husband commented the wine menu was incorporated so didn’t

require one to look through two separate lists – he liked this idea. Knowing I would probably go for a fish dish, he chose a mid-range Sancerre. Having been told the Café Zephyr menu had recently been added to with lots of new items, I was keen to sample the Chefs choice and asked for recommendations. The Salmon Sashimi came highly recommended and then Korean Lamb. Having chosen a white wine to accompany our meal, I decided to stick to fish and ordered the Sashimi, followed by Lobster Linguine. My husband Alistair asked for a starter sized portion of mushroom risotto, followed by the recommended Truffle Pizza; the Sancerre also worked well with these dishes. I expected the Sashimi to be tiny but to my delight the generous slithers of salmon were laid out beautifully on a rectangular white dish and garnished with finely chopped shallots, micro-herbs and tiny little peppers and drizzled with something delicious…it was really very tasty and with a nice crunchy bread, could almost have made a meal in itself. Alistair’s risotto was creamy and flavoursome…I was of course obliged to try a little so I could write about it first-hand…as an occasional flesh-eater only, I would have been happy with the risotto myself. Starters complete and having indulged in nibbles first we were thankful when our assigned waiter for the evening Daniel, suggested a small rest between courses. This gave us time to sit back, enjoy our wine and really soak up the atmosphere. Almost every high-table and bar stool inside were taken and all the tables out-side were filled with all sorts of interesting g people; those who were still in sharp suits having arrived straight from the office to enjoy a light supper and a few drinks before heading home, then those on holiday who had passed by and were enticed in by the delights of the displayed menu and then those who had been home, changed and come out to make an evening of it. By now the sun was starting to disappear behind the buildings opposite, despite this, the air was still warm, however, we were pleased the terrace is interspersed with huge outside heaters in case the temperature dropped further. I’d ordered the Lobster Linguine anticipating it to be very much like a tantalising tasty crab linguine enjoyed elsewhere with the crab and sauce interlaced within the linguine, a little boring to behold but delicious nevertheless, so I was not expecting the plate placed before me which on first glance made me jig with joy and almost clap with

glee, like a small child being presented with their first well-dressed knickerbocker-glory… which must have looked a little bonkers to anyone watching from neighbouring tables, but being so long in the tooth I neither notice nor care, I simply said to Daniel, ‘this looks amazing, thank you so much’. The platter was covered with linguine, topped with a rather large lobster dressed with caviar, king prawns and shrimp and half a lemon wrapped in lace to squeeze at will over my dish. There was lots of it but so gorgeous was it, I forced myself to make it to the end! It was also my duty to try Alistair’s pizza, which in contrast to my feast for the eyes, was more modest in its appearance but this mattered not once the loaded fork had passed though the gateway of the lips and settled on the taste buds of the tongue. My husband agreed and polished it all off with relish. Empty Sancerre bottle, bottom up in its ice-bucket, our plates were cleared and we were offered dessert. As I’ve said in previous reviews…dessert is part of the deal, whether one wants one or not!!! We were pleased to have a little time before Chefs choice of ‘Textures of Chocolate’ turned up capped with a crunchy sesame crisp. Yum. My first mouthful revealed the crunch of a chocolate brownie and then Alistair discovered a soft blousy texture reminiscent of marshmallow but it turned out to be a chocolate jelly…who knew! With each mouthful a

new texture tale unfolded. It tasted good and was interesting…like a little dessert adventure. Glasses drained, sunshine gone and plates seemingly licked clean, it was nearly time to go, but not without thanking Chef in person especially for his supreme effort to ensure hubby had sufficient veggie bites. Head Chef Inaka, came out of his natural habitat and greeted me with a warm handshake and shared with me he had not long returned to The Royal Yacht after having spent three years training in Dubai. He has been with the Yacht since 2007 and enjoyed the position of Head Chef at Zephyr until 2015 when Chef Joao took over so he could train away. On his return it was decided Inaka & Joao would run the kitchen together and the two work in synergy looking after the diners to the same high standard. We were asked if we would like to stay for coffee but we regretfully declined mindful of needing to settle the children before retiring with full tummies for the night. We re-iterated our thanks and sauntered off into the night leaving the other clientele to enjoy their meals; serving until 10pm we expected Chef and his team would be working a while longer. Thank you Chef Inaka and Café Zephyr for a superlative evening!

HEALTH AND WELL BEING

Healthy, Wealthy and Wise! Just like the terms health or wellness, wealth means something different to every single one of us. What does wealth mean to you? There’s the kind of wealth associated with millionaires, mansions and the Middle East, or the aspect of wealth relating to the finance industry, dot com start ups and visionary entrepreneurs. Many people might visualise wealth as being able to pay bills on time, feed their family and have a little extra for trips to the cinema, restaurants or an annual holiday. Others may take a different view, associating wealth with a richness for life and experiences. Being able to have the time, freedom and money to follow your dreams, spend more time with your kids and travel the world might bring you far more perceived wealth than money in the bank. With all this in mind, I want to take you on the ‘health is wealth’ journey instead… If you don’t have your health, you simply can’t seize all the opportunities that come your way nor maximise your enjoyment of life. When your physical health is less than optimal, it can be more difficult to travel, play with your grandchildren and might even prevent you from carrying out simple everyday tasks like getting dressed or cooking dinner. So, how can we build our most important form of wealth: our health? • Eat more fruit and vegetables. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, low in fat and calories, these are the true superheroes of our diet. Aim for 2-3 portions of fruit and 5-7 portions of vegetables daily. Include with meals or add as snacks.

• Eat more beans and lentils. High in fibre, low in fat and low in calories with a special kind of resistant starch that boosts our intestinal health. Save money and extra packaging by buying dried versions, soaking overnight and boiling for around an hour (actual timings vary depending on the kind of pulse) before adding to family favourites like chilli, bolognese or curry. • Drink more water. But not out of plastic bottles! Save your health and the environment by going plastic-free and investing in a glass or stainless steel refillable water bottle. Drink at least 6-8 glasses a day which is around 1.5 to 2litres. Use filtered water where possible. • Cut down on red meat, processed meats, creamy sauces, cheese and fried foods. I don’t want to be the party pooper here, but it does come down to balance. The human body is simply not designed to eat so much food all the time and then washed down with a bottle of red, a glass of port and a coffee! Swap minced beef in recipes for lentils or veggie mince. Add more vegetables to every meal. Swap deep fried chips for sweet potato mash, roasted root vegetables or new potatoes. Cut back on shop-bought sauces and dressings and add flavour by using herbs, lemon juice, seasonal veggies and toasted seeds. Spend some time researching alternatives and getting creative in the kitchen. • Cut down on alcohol. Cutting back on alcohol - especially if you currently drink around the recommended maximum of 14 units per week, or more - will bring many proven health benefits, not just weight loss. Avoiding alcohol will help to normalise hormone imbalance, boost your mental alertness and increase your productivity at work. Not to mention the fact that wasted time spent in bed with a hangover is not ideal if you have adventures to create and goals to achieve! 5 insects that could be good news for your garden Some creepy-crawlies deserve to be celebrated, says Hannah Stephenson

The warm weather has not only brought on our plants, but insects also seem to be thriving. Unless they're a bee or a butterfly however, insects can often get landed with a bad reputation, from those pesky greenfly sucking sap and lily beetles nibbling precious lilies, to caterpillars causing chaos on cabbages. But most insects should really be welcomed with open arms, being an essential ingredient for a healthy plot, according to Andrew Salisbury, principal entomologist with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS; rhs.org.uk). Many are useful pollinators, help to break down and recycle dead animal and plant material or serve as predators, which helps keep other invertebrates in check, including plant pests. So, when you're trying to pick the bright red lily beetles off your prize blooms, or battling clouds of aphids on the stems of roses and other plants, look a bit deeper into your beds and borders for the insects which not only provide colourful interest but may also benefit your garden. Here, Salisbury lists five eye-catching garden insects to look out for...

1. Elephant hawk moth caterpillar (Deilephila elpenor) The large, 8cm-long, brown, snake-mimicking caterpillars of this bright pink moth can be found on fuchsias during summer. When disturbed, the caterpillars can retract their heads into their bodies, and when extended again are said to resemble an elephant's trunk. They feed on wildflower hosts in the wild, such as rosebay willowherb, and it's unusual for them to seriously damage garden plants.

the smaller, darker, invasive Asian hornet which, if seen, should be reported. See nonnativespecies.org for more information. 4. Large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula) Ferocious aerial predators of the insect world, this is one of several species of dragonfly and damselfly that can breed in garden ponds, and will visit pond-less gardens. The adults use their large eyes to spot insect prey and hunt it down in flight. The nymphs (immature stage damselflies) live in ponds, where they feed on other aquatic animals. Damselflies promote a healthy balance in gardens and garden ponds, as they help reduce the number of other aquatic larvae, such as mosquitoes. Adults will also predate on what may be considered nuisance insects.

2. Rose chafer (Cetonia aurata) One of Britain's shiniest beetles, this 2cm-long metallic green beetle can sometimes be found feeding in flowers, where they may occasionally damage a few petals. Gardeners may feel it's a price worth paying however, as the 2cm long C-shaped larvae feed on decomposing plant material and are often found in compost heaps, where they help ready the compost. Some species of chafer beetle are pests because their larvae feed on the roots of plants. But the rose chafer is relatively harmless, as its larvae feed on decaying organic matter, rather than living plant material. 3. European Hornet (Vespa crabro) Sometimes alarming because of their size and slow, buzzing flight, the UK's largest native wasp sees queens reaching up to 3cm in length. Although it can cause concern, it is less aggressive than other species of social wasp and is a useful predator of insects including other wasps and flies. It should not be confused with

5. Hornet mimic hoverfly (Volucella zonaria) A pollinator and fly, the UK's largest hoverfly mimics the European hornet to avoid being eaten. It is more than 1.5cm-long, has no sting and can be found visiting flowers during the summer. The 2cm-long larvae (maggots) feed on waste at the bottom of social wasp nests.

TRANSFORM YOUR PATIO: 3 INSPIRING SETTINGS FOR SUMMER Style it right and outdoor space becomes another 'room'. Gabrielle Fagan shows how to make your garden patio the hottest place in your home (no matter the weather). Summer is here, which means it's time to get your outdoor space ship-shape and fit for the season. It's key to make sure it suits you and your lifestyle. If al-fresco feasts are your passion, opt for a roomy table and comfortable chairs, so guests feel like lingering. If sitting and chilling's more your vibe, a couple of sofas and a coffee table will probably suffice, while a deck as small as a postage stamp can probably only accommodate a compact table (perfect for cocktails and nibbles) and fold-up chairs. There's everything to play for outdoors right now, with a huge variety of furniture and accessories available. Make the most of sunny days with our edit of everything you need to be able to enjoy the great outdoors... CREATE A COLOURFUL HOTSPOT Banish conventional white furniture for good and embrace the season's passion for punchy colour. “This season, we're becoming decidedly braver in our outdoor furniture choices,'' says Vicky Angell, outdoor living buyer at John Lewis. “Although woven and wooden textures continue to be very popular, we're seeing an increasing demand for outdoor pieces that inject a 'pop' of vibrant colour into gardens. “Contemporary furniture designs are increasingly in demand, and this trend is personified by our cheerful Salsa collection - a playful outdoor furniture range in six different summer hues,'' she adds. 44 | www.life-mags.com

Patio project: Avoid a matchy-matchy look and pick colourful individual pieces of furniture rather than a single set. Alternatively, jazz up old furniture by painting it in bright hues - maybe paint each chair a different colour - or opt for softer but fashionable ice-cream shades. A gaily printed umbrella, patterned cushions and a throw will complete the look.

“More than ever, we're seeing our outdoor space as a true extension of our homes. With many people living in smaller homes than previous generations, every inch of additional space for entertaining and relaxing counts,'' says Vicky Angell. “People are looking for statement pieces for their gardens from a stunning seat to a pizza oven, or even a Tiki bar.

SET A SCENE WITH SEATING Your patio should be furnished in style, so that there's a seamless transition from indoors to out.

“Another major trend is accessorising outdoors,'' she adds. “Just as we do in our sitting rooms or dining rooms, people are adding those essential details - outdoor rugs, cushions, throws, lanterns and line lights, to make their gardens more comfortable and homely.''

“As the warmer months make a welcome return, we all remember the simple pleasures of spending time relaxing in the garden. With so many different looks to choose from, you can easily transform your outside space to become a stylish extension of your home,'' says Marcus Eyles, buying director at Dobbies Garden Centres. “Our Refined Coastal collection, inspired by breaking waves and endless skies, is a sophisticated but laid-back interpretation of the nautical trend. A restful palette of pale blues, warm whites, soft neutrals and breezy stripes, which complements sleek, timber furniture and seafarer accessories. “Generally, there's a move towards bold multicultural prints and exotic planting reflecting global influences in decor, but the demand for a palette of soft tones and natural materials never wanes.'' Patio project: Mix indoor and outdoor natural materials, so you blur the boundary between the indoors and the outdoors. A balanced combination of rattan, wood, metal, ceramics and glass will give a space a natural, collected feel and connect the interior with the exterior. CONJURE A SERENE SANCTUARY With our time-poor, stress-filled 'modern' lifestyles, a special space furnished to our taste, where we instantly feel calm, is an essential - make that a patio area or a secluded corner of a garden. 46 | www.life-mags.com

Patio project:Make a patio feel more like another room by adding a pergola or an awning. Lighting is key to zone an area and, even without actual outdoor lighting, can be achieved with lanterns and hurricane lamps. As a finishing touch, reflect your decor style with personal touches - outdoor canvasses hung on a painted fence, throws draped over chairs, and 'ornaments' like garden sculptures.

AMARA Amara is a one-stop shop for some of the most talented interior designers and their stylish home decos, and this bijoux table and chair teamed with palm print tableware, and little gems such as the bejewelled shrimp napkin rings, bring home entertaining to another level. Bellissimo!

WILKO BBQ PIZZA OVEN GRILL AND SMOKER Entertaining the idea of serving a piping hot pizza, as well as kebabs from the grill? This pizza oven, grill and smoker boasts several different functions with the option of a pizza stone, charcoal pan and a smoker with a water pan to slow-cook red meats and get the juices flowing. It looks smart too, and is easy to handle. (Shown opposite). RATTAN-STYLE KETER COOL BAR What's not to love about this weatherproof party table, which doubles as a poser table and cool box all in one? The table lid extends over an ice bucket base with double wall insulation, to keep your wine and beer perfectly chilled while you're firing up the barbie and marinating the chicken thighs.

PORTMEIRION BOTANIC GARDEN TABLEWARE Portmeirion's classic Botanical Garden print has been in bloom for 40 years, and there's good reason why we still covet these lovely ceramic pieces with their whimsical floral prints. Timeless, they can effortlessly be placed together without having to worry about being too matchy-matchy, and the flora and fauna can also be paired with pretty pastels to bring out colour palette or highlight seasonal produce and favourite family recipes, of course. FOUR PERSON FRESH GREENS HAMPER, MARKS & SPENCER At one with nature, this pretty hamper has a decorative leaf print design and holds all the necessities for your open-air spread. Along with ceramic plates, plastic wine glasses, cutlery, salt & pepper shakers and a bottle opener and corkscrew, there's just enough room to pack the sarnies and coronation chicken. A chilled bottle of wine or six-pack of beer will need to be carried separately in a cooler bag.

COCKTAIL JUG WITH STIRRER, THE WHITE COMPANY With so many long refreshing drinks, such as a P&T (white port and tonic - also dubbed the new G&T), tickling our taste buds, this cocktail jug is a must for smart summer soirees.

PLAY THE FIELD Play the game at home by taking to the great outdoors - your garden - and making it a space for enjoying sport (or getting away from it!). If you're spectating, do it in comfort in squidgy chairs, and make sure there's a table for drinks or an al-fresco meal - or just a bowl of popcorn and create your own outdoor cinema. Conjure your own park-style big screen by hanging up a sheet - don't forget to weight it so it doesn't flutter in the wind - and then use a projector. Take a break in

Bournemouth by Rebecca Underwood

Bournemouth beach huts

Bournemouth where the gardens meet the sea

Stroll sedately along the promenade beside the seven mile stretch of soft sandy beach and admire the view of the pier. And whilst the seagulls squawk and swoop overhead, take in the intoxicating smell of the briny. Welcome to Bournemouth, Dorset, on England’s southern coast. Recipient of the 2017 Best Travel Award for the UK’s Best Seaside Town, Bournemouth attracts more than five million visitors every year and there is much to explore.

Pier Zip Wire

Bournemouth Pier

58 | www.life-mags.com

I started off with a wander along Bournemouth Pier, which has a fascinating history dating back to 1856 when a wooden jetty was completed. A wooden pier replaced the jetty five years later but this survived for only fifteen years as it was destroyed by a ferocious storm. In 1880 a new pier was opened, a bandstand and shelters were later added, and the pier was extended to a length of 1,000 feet. Due to corrosion, the pier was rebuilt in 1979 and today’s visitors are richly rewarded with modern attractions such as the RockReef, which features 25 climbing walls, an aerial obstacle course, Pier caves, a vertical slide, and a leap of faith jumping challenge. Or, for the very adventurous, there is a pier to shore zip wire. I watched a few courageous souls launch themselves from a platform 25 metres above the sea then ‘zip surf’ 250 metres above the waves and land on the sand. There was a spontaneous round of applause from the spectators but I found the very idea rather unsettling so I headed for the Key West Restaurant on the pier to take advantage of the calming views across the ocean. I sampled the delicious Moules Mariniere with onions, garlic, and a splash of white wine, and accompanied by a generous glass of Ponte Pinot Grigio 2017, it was the antidote. After a brisk walk along the pier, I made

my way to the Oceanarium, which is only a stone’s throw from the pier entrance. The aquarium houses more than 300 different species including rare green sea turtles, brightly coloured clownfish, fierce piranhas with razor sharp teeth and sharks with callous expressions. Seeking a more pleasant encounter I headed to the otter enclosure to watch their playful and delightful antics and then I arrived at the Humbolt penguin enclosure just in time for the feeding session, which resulted in a squabble or two over a fish supper. For my own fish supper I went to Harry Ramsden’s opposite the pier. Selecting an outside table, with a beach view, I savoured the fresh fish ‘n’ chips with mushy peas and a thirst quenching glass of raspberry lemonade. Harry Ramsden’s has been serving our national dish for 90 years and it’s sure to continue. Bournemouth offers a wide variety of hotels but for those keen to avoid time restrictions for meals and limited space, opting for a serviced apartment is just the ticket. I stayed in a spacious self contained, two bedroom apartment within the Exchange Buildings located on Upper Hinton Road. The apartment is delightfully peaceful, light and airy, with modern furnishings, comfortable beds and a large kitchen, which featured every appliance including a fridge-freezer, oven, washing machine/dryer and a dish washer. The property is adjacent to St Peter’s Church, a grade I listed building, which is where Mary Shelley, author of the Gothic novel Frankenstein, is buried, and Bournemouth’s shops and attractions including the Pier and the Lower, Central and Upper Gardens, are all within walking distance. The verdant and beautiful gardens, which stretch from Bournemouth Pier, cover continues overleaf...

three glorious kilometres. I wandered along one of the paths as the mixture of floral scents emanating from an enormous variety of plants and shrubs filled the air and I reflected on the history of the Grade II listed gardens. In 1859 the owners of the land gave permission for the area to become a public pleasure ground and in 1872 the Upper, Central and Lower Gardens joined together to become one. In the 1920’s the pavilion, in the Lower Gardens, was built. Ornamental rock gardens and charming small waterfalls were installed and many of the trees and shrubs remain in place to this day. The Upper Gardens include tennis courts and I watched the action for a while and noted the water tower, which dates back to between 1883 and 1903. In 1992 the Upper Gardens were replanted to include meadow walks and ample seating areas where I watched the frisky squirrels going about their daily business. For an unforgettable encounter with wildlife, Monkey World, located in Longthorns, Wareham, which is only 22 miles from Bournemouth, is a very special experience. This highly respected rescue centre for abused apes, founded in 1987 by the late Jim Cronin, provides sanctuary for more than 250 primates from around the world, including chimpanzees, orang-utans, gibbons, macaques, woolly monkeys, squirrel monkeys, marmosets, tamarins and lemurs. The successful television series Monkey Business, which premiered in 1998, focused on Jim Cronin and his wife Alison, travelling around the world, rescuing primates from appalling situations and transporting them to Monkey World where they now live in comfort and safety and in the company of other members of their species. Monkey Life, a follow-on series was created in 2006 and continues to this day. Be sure to attend the keeper’s talks, particularly the spider monkey’s, capuchins and stump-tailed macaques and don’t miss the chimpanzees feeding session.

served with Normandy sour cream and as I admired the splendid vista across the ocean I held my cool glass of Chardonnay aloft in respect of Bournemouth’s famous residents Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and her esteemed husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. And as the sunshine faded and the clouds gathered I contemplated on his words: ‘I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers, From the seas and the streams, I bear light shade for the leaves when laid, In their noon-day dreams’. For my own dining experience I visited Banque and Bohem, located on Poole Hill, a short walk from the centre of Bounemouth. Housed in an old auction house, which dates back to the 1920’s, the property has retained some striking features, including imposing marble pillars, glittering chandeliers, and an enormous room-sized Chubb safe, which is now an additional dining room. I ordered the succulent roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, and a glass of Châteauneuf du Pape, which were served with aplomb and the ‘live’ entertainment, which was a singer/guitarist covering some relaxing tunes created a ‘chilled’ atmosphere. Or, for a more formal affair, and the option of ‘alfresco dining’, head for Brasserie Blanc at the Marriott Highcliff Hotel on St Michael’s Road. I sampled the delicate flavours of the Malabar fish curry with toasted coconut, followed by the zesty lemon tart

SPRAY TANS, SWIMWEAR AND 'GOLDEN HOUR' PHOTOS LISA SNOWDON'S 6 HACKS FOR SUMMER HOLIDAY HAPPINESS By Katie Wright The model and presenter shares her fashion and beauty confidence tips with Katie Wright. As careers go, modelling has a shorter lifespan than most, with many professional clothes horses retiring from catwalk duties well before their 30th birthday.

"I'm mid-forties now, I just think it's really important because we still want to look good, we still want to feel good, you know, we're kind of in the prime of our life," says Snowdon, who also regularly presents the fashion segment on This Morning. "We've got more body confidence, we've got more time on our hands. A lot of the 45-pluses, their kids have grown up so they've got more time to do things for themselves, maybe go on holiday..." If you are jetting off somewhere hot and want to look model-esque by the pool, Snowdon has got some amazing advice for how to look and feel great all summer long, including some clever tricks she picked up in her modelling days. continues overleaf...

Lisa Snowdon though, who started modelling in her teens, has just starred in a swimwear campaign at the age of 46. Why now? This is the second time the Hertfordshire-born beauty has worked with JD Williams, the brand that focus on fashion for 'midsters' - over-45s - and she hopes to inspire other women.

"A spray tan is amazing for the first few days of your holiday because then you feel like you can wear colour and pull it off, your limbs just look better, they look sunny and golden - you just blend in a bit better!"

"Great cover-ups, like kaftans, kimonos, sarongs, they go a long way on holiday. You can have it on on the sunlounger and if you're still a bit shy you can sit all day with it on because a lot of them are so fine and sheer that they're actually quite comfortable.

"You've got the agility of being able to put it on quickly if you need to nip to the loo or go to the bar or run around putting cream on the kids, it's just having something there to cover yourself up."

"I think most importantly it's getting good swimwear that fits you. I think a lot of older women think, 'Oh I'm just going to wear black because black's the most flattering', but actually you can get some great prints and some really clever technology in swimwear now - like mesh materials, supportive high-waisted pants, underwired bras if you need it. "A tankini is great - if you want to have a big boozy lunch with pasta, rice, paella or whatever, you haven't got to worry about

4. AVOID THE MIDDAY SUN "Stay away from the midday sun because midday sun plays cruel, cruel tricks on our bodies! It's like in a changing room when you've got that overhead lighting which casts an ugly shadow and makes you look like you've got lumps and bumps and blobby skin that isn't there. "Have a lovely long lunch and then come back for about half past three when the light's dipped and it's got that warmth to it - it's the golden hour. That's when I do all my holiday pictures and selfies with my friends - you look like a goddess. A golden goddess." 5. DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS "It's such a shame that we can't appreciate our bodies in the moment [but] I think as we age and get older we do start appreciating. It's about acceptance rather than trying to be perfect or trying to compare yourself. "It's just a waste of time and energy, and that's the difference with us 'midsters', we're a bit more content in ourselves and we realise there's more to life than squeezing into a size whatever. It's about how you feel about your life and the people that you've got in it." 6. EXERCISE FOR YOUR MIND "I would definitely recommend exercise because you do feel better about yourself when you do it. Then when you feel good, you ultimately have more confidence and you walk taller and you don't sweat the small stuff as much. You think, 'Oh, you know what, I've got a bit of a wobbly bit there and a bit of a belly there, but, you know, I've had some great food and I'm about to drink my weight in pina coladas on holiday!'

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

The power of the sun.... By Penny Downes of PENNYFEATHERS Beauty, St Clements As the sun carries on shining and I feel the strength of its rays gently warm my skin, I decided to take the advantage to use this as my opening article. Clients, friends and family members know that sunscreen is my bug bare and know how much I shout about it being not only a crucial anti ageing step but in many cases a life saver. We are well aware of what the sun can do to the skin and its down sides. Although most of us love the feeling we get from the warmth on our bodies and the good feeling the Endorphins leave us with, we still risk the down sides for the tiny benefits we get. As mentioned earlier I love the fact that whilst writing the bright ball of fire is shining down on us and the heat is filtering through my salon window, it's a real boost. However I am all too aware of the damages and down sides and feel the guilt setting in when I consider basking in it. At 17 I read a book that changed my life, a mans personal account of loosing his one true love to skin cancer after not protecting his skin well enough when living abroad. From that emotional day I promised myself that, daily I would apply a factor 30 and have up kept that promise resulting in a porcelain complexion. I couldn't agree more that we need a little sun to boost our feel good factors, give us strong bones from the Vitamin D, the glow is lovely and we do feel better with a little colour but my key point is everything should be in little amounts. Protection is the best prevention for sun damage and helps slow the signs of ageing right down. Regularly checking your skin for changes is also the best prevention for skin cancers developing. Moles, freckles and skin lesions that can develop changes in size, texture and colour can all be alarm bells that should never be ignored. I always recommend to take annual photos of areas that may be changeable as this will give you the best comparison for the future. Jersey is an island loves the sun but we also are fully aware of the damage, regular skin clinics are held by charities to help prevent skin cancer and should be supported by us all as skin cancer doesn't discriminate.

I cringe as a Skin Care Therapist when I'm face to face with a handbag skin, not only do I think ouch that's looking dry, crusty, flakey and sore but I know that all that melanin has surfaced, it isn't there for the good but there to protect and restore the skin and its now gone too far. I still find it hard to see the point of the look and why people think they look great. We need sunscreen, the sun is strong and yes we are in the Channel Islands but we need the protection, even on the wettest day as long as there is day light we are getting UV Ageing and UV Cancer Causing rays. Titanium Dioxide based sunscreens give you the best coverage. This ingredient masks the sun rays away from the skin to stop the dangerous rays inhibiting the skin and causing damage. I learnt at a few years ago at a medical presentation that most sun blemishes and cancers are found in the most unusual places. For example gents get them on the ears or behind the ears from where they have short hair and its actually their Barbers who notice them, for women commonly they are found on the parting again mostly discovered by their hair stylist. I for one ensure I check clients as they visit me in treatments, especially when I see a change in a mole or skin blemish I tell clients and advise them that I see a difference and to get it checked out. I build trust with clients and put them at ease. I sound like a broken record for many but protection is the best form of staying young. A sunscreen is the best anti ageing cream , it stops the damage from happening and prevents the scary skin damage of a sun worshipper. We need to slip, slap, slop these creams on to keep our skin protected if we don't it can't protect itself. I'm not saying stay out of the sun thats impossible and not an option for many and a little bit is good but the fake cow hide handbag look isn't, get a tan from a bottle, be safe, be aware and be wise, protect and prevent that's all I can say. www.penny-feathers.co.uk

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS USE AFTERSUN, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT SUNBURNT Sun protection expert Abi Cleeve tells Katie Wright why slathering on a post-bathing lotion shouldn't be an afterthought

Most people learn about the importance of sun cream the hard way, when a delightful day on the beach ends not with a gorgeous tan, but with frazzled, fiery red skin that radiates heat and causes searing pain whenever you accidentally brush it against your bed sheets. Ouch. In those cases, slathering yourself in aloe vera and heading for the shade is the obvious thing to do, but did you know that even if you haven't reached lobster levels of sunburn, you should still be applying aftersun? "Whether an obvious burn or not, the skin goes through defence processes when under attack from UV radiation. It should be a daily 'go to' after any sun exposure," says Abi Cleeve, MD of Ultrasun UK. WHY IS AFTERSUN SO IMPORTANT? "A truly hydrated skin is key to healthy skin. When cells are hydrated and oxygenised, they cope much better with oxidative stress, such as UV, pollution and infrared-A," Cleeve explains. "An overexposure to UV works in a similar way to an overdose of thermal radiation (heat). When your skin burns - UV or thermal burn - the damage spreads through the skin cells after the exposure has ceased. "Most people only feel 'burnt' after a few hours out of the sun, and we know with a thermal burn - such as from the iron or the oven the damage continues to spread after the source of the burn has stopped. Getting key cooling ingredients on to the skin really helps." WHAT DOES AFTERSUN DO? Cleeve recommends Ultrasun's new Aftersun Tan Booster, which contains an ingredient called superoxide dismutase that gives the skin all-important antioxidants, plus cooling menthols.

68 | www.life-mags.com

"Of course, hydration in a way the skin can utilise is vital. So many products may hydrate in the short term, but product is quickly processed through the skin's system, leaving no longer-term support," she says. "With this true level of support, the skin is less likely to go into trauma, meaning it doesn't dry and peel as easily, and you'll prolong your tan with a gorgeous, hydrated glow." HOW MUCH AFTERSUN SHOULD YOU APPLY? "Lots!" Cleeve advises. "I mean that, actually - an immediate application is important, but don't be afraid to add more to keep the skin saturated with hydration." And that, in turn, will help your tan last longer - a fortunate side effect of soothing your skin. "I will always say sun protection is THE most important thing, but aftersun comes a close second!" Cleeve adds. "I was even applying it to my kids when they were toddlers, who didn't care about prolonging their tan. I had kept them super safe in the sun, but I knew what the skin needed after sun exposure. Aftersun should be part of your sunny day routine, at home and abroad."

WEALTH

Koi ~ Kill for food or Cure for Wealth! The symbol of ‘fish’ has traditionally been celebrated as sacred in many cultures and in many stages of history - from Greek and Roman mythology to the world of the Celts, Hindus, in Buddhism, and indeed as we know, in Christianity. It has long been associated with abundance and wealth with Koi Carp in particular being important in Japanese culture symbolising, good fortune or luck and abundance. Originally used as food, Koi are now regarded as ‘living jewels’ and although given many different names according to their colour patterns, Koi are all the same species ‘Cyprinus Carpio’. Carpio, is the name of the island where the goddess of love, Venus, was reputedly born and brought up and means ‘fecundity’. The name “Carpio” is apt as Koi are fertile; each spawn on an average 100,000 eggs every time. It is therefore significant and proper that “Koi” sounds the same as Koi meaning “love” in Japanese. They are also associated with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. One of the primary reasons the fish is symbolic in Japanese culture is because it is known for swimming upstream no matter what the conditions are. These fish are even said to swim up waterfalls. This is viewed as an absolute show of power because they will continue to swim upstream as if on a mission. They cannot be distracted or deterred by anything. Kois swimming downstream are considered bad luck. The Chinese also traditionally believe the fish brings much abundance, and when swimming in pairs, symbolises fidelity and good companionship often used to invoke a successful marriage. Interestingly, the Chinese word for fish (yu) is pronounced the same way as the Chinese word for abundance! In the Buddhist tradition fish represent courage and in Korea love and friendship. So in general the fish symbolism is considered even today, to represent advancement, both materially and spiritually and are a popular choice for tatoos… In Feng Shui the symbology of fish, in general, is closely associated with the energy of water. The mysterious, the unknown, the bringer of life…are all associations with the power of the water element. Feng shui adds the dimension of prosperity and abundance to the meaning of water. However, while widely used in many feng shui ‘cures for wealth’, water as a symbol of abundance is not unique to feng shui, but common in many cultures as we have seen above. So, in simple terms, water is a life giver, thus a symbol of continuous abundance with ‘fish’ being the giver of sustenance and nourishment; thus associated with health, wealth, and prosperity.

70 | www.life-mags.com

In choosing the best Feng Shui ‘wealth cure’ for your home or office, its potency will depend on how much you actually like the ‘cure’. For example, if you love a specific image of fish, and find a place for it in the right feng shui bagua area that really compliments your decor, this will work as an excellent feng shui cure! But if you choose an aquarium that you don’t like, keep clean or enjoy…it is less likely to work for you. BOOK of the month... THE JERSEY FORAGER A Field Guide to Free Food By Jeremy Strickland - £10.00 This is the first complete book on finding wild food in the Island. To quote from the author’s introduction: ‘It was not long ago that Islanders had to rely heavily on foraging for food, especially from 1944 onwards when starvation was a very real problem. There is still a lot of foraging knowledge in this Island, but like a language learnt it disappears with lack of use. Through this book I hope to revive that knowledge and keep it alive.’ It is a modestly-sized paperback, handy for taking with you on a foraging expedition. Each item mentioned is well illustrated to help the reader identify the plants. The book is divided into six separate sections: plants and trees, carrot family; cabbage family; fungi, shellfish and seaweed. There are plenty of examples of Jersey’s natural edible bounty in each section. The book contains recipes or advice on how to use the Island’s cornucopia of plants, fungi and seafood; it also lists their Jèrriais names. A useful and valuable book. * All profits from the sale of this book are donated to Headway Jersey. * Available at the Headway Shop in New Street or through RURAL magazine: Visit www.ruraljersey.co.uk/rural-reads
