Ding Dong merrily on high! Christmas is here once more and given our recent frosts, it’s set to be a lovely, crisp cold one (dare we hope for snow). Snow or not, Christmas is always a wonderful opportunity to stay at home, light the fire, spend time with family and of course put your feet up and read. So to accompany you in this comforting pursuit, we have put together a completely Christmassy issue; we hope you enjoy. Kicking off Christmas in style, Martin Flageul, Wine Consultant, has put together some Christmas Crackers; amusing wine stories to excite and delight….very funny. Penny Downes is showing us how to maximise Christmas glamour and Mark Shields is tugging on our heart strings.

chronicling his life. Work is underway to collate the articles and add many others of Michael’s stories, into a book for your delight. It will be on sale early next year. I’d like to thank Michael and his lovely wife Josephine for sharing with us. On that note, sincere apologies for, in last month’s edition, labelling the photograph of Michael outside Buckingham Palace incorrectly; he was of course standing next to the gorgeous Josephine Ginns. Thank you to all our customers, advertisers and readers, for an immensely satisfying 2016. That just leaves me to wish you a very peaceful and love filled Christmas and a New Year brimming with happiness, success and fulfilment.

Rebecca Underwood is taking us on a cruise destined for Athens and Road Test takes a close look at the Audi Spyder. Of course we have lots of Christmas articles with ‘Spruce It Up’, ‘Festive Dining’ and an exclusive interview with the not quite so elusive (these days), Mrs Claus.

Juanita Shield-Laignel

And if that wasn’t all enough, our antiques, fashion, food, beauty, travel, health and home pages are rammed full to keep you settled on that sofa for hours.

If you have an interesting story to share or would like your business reviewed, please feel free to call me on 619882. I’d love to hear from you.

Sadly, in one way but excitingly in another, my time with Michael Ginns MBE has come to end. This month of December coincides with Michael’s 89th birthday and we are delighted to bring you the last in a series of 10 articles

MRS CLAUS:Layout 1 01/12/2016 18:48 Page 2

INTERVIEW

An Interview with Mrs Claus You may remember, last Christmas, I had the absolute magical delight of spending an afternoon in the company of Father Christmas. He enjoyed chatting to me so much he kindly asked if this year, I’d like to spend some time with Mrs Claus….by Juanita Shield-Laignel I was so excited when the call came through from Santa’s Private Secretary elf, inviting me to interview Mrs Claus. Being whisked away to a secret location last year had been such a thrill, I was more than happy to do it again. This time when I arrived, I was shown into the cosy, cottage front room again, but found I had to sit waiting for quite a while (last time Santa had arrived almost straight after I’d sat down). I sat quietly waiting, looking at a myriad of little wooden carvings, cobwebs and candlelit corners wondering where Mrs Clause could possibly be. I checked the ginormous clock on the wall, several times, but I was definitely here at the time instructed. Then all of a sudden there was a huge clatter of saucepans from the kitchen and then in burst a rosy cheeked lady, covered in flour. She was looking down and brushing flour off her piny whilst muttering to herself under her breath. The words were inaudible but I got the general tone. Moving across the room quickly to a small wooden door on the far side she almost tripped over my feet, not looking where she was going. “Well I never.” She said in what could only be described as gorgeous sing songy voice. “Who the devil are you?” She was looking right at me of course. It took me a while to explain I had been invited by Mr Claus to interview her. “Well bother and balderdash, I’ve got so much to do before Christmas day, I’d clean forgotten. Well you’d better come into the kitchen else I just won’t have Santa’s Christmas lunch ready in time. Do you know how long it takes to make 864 sausage rolls, 492 mince pies and enough custard to literally sink a battle ship? No I don’t suppose you do.” With that she pointed me in the direction of the kitchen and said she was just going to change her pinafore and would be back in a jiffy. She was true to her word, she came bustling back into the kitchen almost as soon as I’d found a stool not covered in flour, to sit on. I was hardly able to utter a word when she started asking lots of rhetorical questions and then answering them herself with me sitting frantically making notes. “What is it you want to know then my girl? I suppose you want to know how old I am…everyone always wants to know how old I am…well I can tell you, I’m as old as the hills but as sprightly as the brook that trickles down them.” She hardly paused for breath. “And that’s all you’re gettin out of me on that subject.” She continued at a pace. “I suppose you also want to know how I put up with my husband gallivanting all over the world once a year. Well I can tell you, I’m glad it’s not Christmas every day, that’s for sure. You try cooking bacon rolls for hundreds of elves every day for months before the big day and do you think I gets any help in the kitchen, do I *!@’+#*! ?” (I couldn’t possibly print those words and have to say, I was more than a little shocked at Mrs Claus’ potty mouth).

All the while Mrs Claus had been tugging and pulling at a huge lump of dough and now and then she would lift into the air and slap it down on the table and give it a few good thumps. She saw me watching her do this. “Bread… my dear, every day I makes bread for all them mouths. You should see the size of my muscles.” She didn’t give me a chance to decline and pulled up her sleeve to reveal a fine bicep that would put many a man to shame, it certainly made me feel very puny. “Early to bed, early to rise, makes you healthy, wealthy and wise. Tosh! If I were wise I’d be sitting in there with my feet up reading the paper, like he does for 364 days of the year. He works hard for one day and gets all the thanks and what do I get? Heartburn!” I wasn’t sure what to say. I expected Mrs Claus to be a sweet little old lady and I think she realised from my wide eyed stare and dropped jaw. She continued. “Not that I really mind, we all do our bit for the kids you see. He delivers, the elves make millions of brightly coloured toys, the reindeer fly and I cook.” She stopped her bread making for a moment and looked at me again, this time with a kindly look in her eye and a softness I hadn’t seen yet. “It’s the children that count. Making them happy is what we all work for and we all, do our little bit. I know I moan a bit about doing all the cooking, but I expect it’s left to me ‘cos it’s what I’m good at see. If I could make toys or drive reindeer I expect it would all be different. We all play to our strengths to get the job done and so long as little Johnny has a toy train to open on Christmas morning, it’s all worthwhile.” She smiled. “Well listen to me ranting on.” She said wistfully. “Why don’t you go ahead and ask me some more questions. Again she didn’t wait for me to say anything and instead launched straight into… “I expect you want to know if Santa snores….everyone always wants to know if Santa snores. Absolutely, he does. The bed veritably shakes when he’s in full flow and ornaments have even been known to fall off the shelves. Fortunately he doesn’t do it every night and sometimes he is so tired, he falls asleep in his chair, so I get the bed to myself. That reminds me, the elves may not help in the kitchen but they all look after their own bed-maken, laundry and tidyin. I don’t do any of that stuff for them, just as well, as I’m a shocking house keeper, you probably saw that in the sitting room there…cobwebs everywhere, just as well none of us is scared of spiders. I actually quite like them…” And she went on to tell me the benefits of spiders at quite some length but I won’t bore you with that on this occasion. Needless to say I hardly said two words to Mrs Claus almost all of the afternoon, but nevertheless, I enjoyed myself being at the hub of the household and listening to her tales. Just like Santa did with me last year, she let me know when the interview was over, when she was finished and that was that. I was sent on my way…

SPRUCE IT UP

Decking the halls is all very well, but the real focal point at Christmas is the tree, which makes a statement about your decor taste and seasonal style. There are four top-of-the-tree looks to choose from this season, to ensure yours is festively fashionable and a star of the show...

ARCTIC CHIC "The must-have look is modern minimalism - in other words, less is more - and that's made white trees and white lights this year's most popular choice," says Stephen Evans, managing director at Christmas Tree World. "This is a sleek, fuss-free but magical setting and works brilliantly with blue decorations - they're a really strong trend. Combine with silver, grey and white for a Frozen or Narnia-inspired look. This cool palette brings a frosty sparkle to the home, but if this is a little too chilly for your taste, intersperse accents of gold and copper to warm up the theme."

TARTAN TRADITIONAL "This classic seasonal look is being shaken up this year, with a tartan twist," says Dobbies seasonal buyer, Kate Hepworth. "Traditional style - particularly the pairing of red and green - is enduringly popular, but the accents change every season to give this theme a new injection of interest. By using plaid, we've aimed to ramp up the cosiness, and it's easy to tie this look into a room's decor theme, by accessorising with tartan throws and cushions.

"Gold's still strong for decorations, with rose gold featuring but champagne gold is taking over because it's glamorous and sophisticated, and suits more gentle, subtle schemes. Bright, shiny gold is still strong for traditional themes."

"While stags are still running wild all over decor, and trees are no exception, they're starting to make way this year for owls, robins, reindeer, and even bear baubles."

NORDIC STYLE

SHIMMER & SHINE "People are lavishing more and more care and attention on decorating their trees, so they're an eye-catching talking point in a room," says Hepworth. "Metallic finishes always impress and attractively capture the light. Silver is always a contemporary choice, although there's a real growth in the popularity of more antiqued silver and vintage baubles. We have an unusual Clock Face Bauble in gold or silver which is an example of the trend. It encapsulates the fashionable style of a mix of shabby chic and Victoriana.

"I love a simple, country-style look inspired by Scandinavian style, which emphasises the natural beauty of the tree foliage and uses a pared-back approach to decorations," enthuses Hepworth. "To achieve this, use clear glass, white, or silver decorations, which will conjure a feeling of snow-laden landscape, or play up the natural theme with green baubles. "Accessorise around the tree with lanterns, wooden candle holders, and chunky cream knits for throws and cushions, and maybe wreaths and garlands of mistletoe and holly. The beauty of this interpretation is that it's so versatile, and can look pure and elegant or rustic and log cabin."

wedding tables. These are often more creative than Christmas tables and you can steal ideas!"

"Gold's a seasonal favourite and looks beautiful contrasted with white, but you could ring the changes this year and use a dark grey or even a black tablecloth for a dramatic, glamorous effect, which will also make table decorations star," says Clare Harris, managing director, Talking Tables. "Texture and tonal variation are key to creating an interesting table, so add glittering table scatter and maybe a mixture of pieces of your own vintage glassware. Fill glasses or tiny vases these with posies of evergreen foliage, or sweet treats wrapped in metallic papers, and the display will look even more striking set with tea lights on a mirrored tray. This could make an easy-peasy centrepiece. "For more table dressing inspiration, browse Pinterest or Instagram, as party planners often post pictures of fabulous

RED-Y, SET, GO Red and white's a classic choice that's cheery and truly traditional... "This year, we have a beautiful 'deck the halls' Christmas theme. It's a vibrant and contemporary palette, with vivid reds, shades of soft grey and accents of tartan. Supported by shades of warm teal and green, the range pays a nod to festive foliage and Christmas pines," says Clare Stevens, senior buyer at Poundland. "Add atmosphere by hanging a Christmas stocking and a red wooden gift tag on the back of each chair. That most traditional icon of the season, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, runs through the decorative theme."

SILVER SHIMMER Celebrate silver and metallics for a sophisticated and elegant 'frosty' setting... "For a truly luxurious dining experience on Christmas Day, you need a spectacular table with glistening accessories, glassware and linen," says The White Company founder Chrissie Rucker. "I love a pure white linen cloth, and then use a pre-lit beaded garland laid down the centre of the table as a centrepiece. I then simply pair it with a scattering of our mercury tea light holders for added sparkle. "On the wall behind the table, I like to hang a net of cascading fairy lights, which looks even more effective hung over a mirror, and for a focal point, an evergreen wreath suspended above the table. On shelves nearby, I have silver baubles displayed in clear glass vases, which catch the light and add to the atmosphere."

22 | www.life-mags.com

WICKED WOODLAND "Off-white or grey china and table linen are perfect for a subtle country or woodland feel for a table setting, which is so on trend in interiors, and this look suits both sophisticated soirees and Christmas banquets," says Emma Sims-Hilditch, creative director at Neptune. "My biggest tip for decorating is to adorn the entire room with the same motifs you use on the table. So if I'm using leafy garlands and lots of candlelight as my centrepiece, I'll repeat that effect on window ledges and other surfaces, and even group candlesticks in a cluster to illuminate a corner of the room. It helps to bring the whole room to life and will make the dining table look even more spectacular. "Don't ignore chairs and benches - simply draping a chunky throw or sheepskin rug on seats or chair backs adds to the comfort and ramps up the feeling of cosseting luxury."

TURKEY TIPS

Bohemia’s Head Chef Steve Smith Reveals his Top Tips for Creating the Best Turkey on Christmas Day With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to prepare for the festive season. Steve Smith is the Head Chef at the Michelin starred Bohemia – here are his top tips on how create the best turkey on Christmas Day. 1. INVEST IN YOUR TURKEY Spending that little extra on an organic or free-range turkey is certainly worth it. Not only is it ethically sourced, it will also have better nutritional benefits and deliver on flavour. 2. PREPARATION Wash and thoroughly dry the cavity of the bird before leaving it to reach room temperature. Putting a moderate amount of softened butter under the skin of the bird will ensure it remains moist. Finally, truss the legs together so it retains its shape throughout cooking. Follow these simple steps, and you will have an absolute showstopper of a turkey. 3. FESTIVE EXTRAS Stuff the cavity of the turkey with herbs, citrus fruits, and an onion to add flavour. However, it is important to ensure there is space for heat to circulate. To make the stuffing seasonal, add some festive favourites such as cranberries, chestnuts, sage and clementine zest.

24 | www.life-mags.com

4. GLORIOUS GRAVY Don’t dispose of the caramelised juices left behind by the turkey as they make the perfect base for the gravy. Adding Madeira, a tbsp of plain flour and quality stock to it will make your gravy rich and delicious. 5. STRESS-FREE CARVING Leave the turkey to rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. This allows the meat to relax, making carving easier. Separating the breasts from the legs and thighs will make carving a lot more manageable as you can simply slice the breast meat, and the rest should fall off the bone. Bohemia is the only restaurant in the Channel Islands to be listed in The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants and is ranked at number 49. DECK THE HALLS

DECK THE HALLS with Berries and Branches

By Hannah Stephenson

There are so many bits and pieces from the garden you can use to make festive decorations, from Christmas tree clippings as a base for traditional wreaths, to variegated holly with berries, crab apples, poppy seedheads, euonymus and cones. "Making your own organic Christmas decorations won't cost a fortune and is a lovely way to spend some festive family fun time together," says plant grower Mike Kitchen, Rocket Gardens plant nursery founder. His step-by-step guide shows you how to make natural-looking decorations in minutes:

FESTIVE CANDLES You will need: • Candle • Holly • Red berries • Hessian material • Gardening twine • Glue gun or safety pins • Scissors

Step by step: 1. Cut a strip of hessian to fit around your candle and attach it together at the back with a glue gun or safety pin. 2. Wrap the gardening twine around the hessian and tie into a pretty bow at the front. 3. Take your foliage and tuck in behind your bow. You could also create a small foliage arrangement, bunched together with floristry wire and tuck this in behind your bow to spruce up your candle further. continues overleaf...

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS:Layout 1 01/12/2016 18:53 Page 2

DECK THE HALLS

ROSEMARY SNOWFLAKES You will need: • 4 sprigs of Rosemary (all measuring roughly the same length) • Gardening twine • Floristry wire • Scissors Step by step: 1. Using two sprigs of rosemary each time, place the sprigs together to form a cross shape. 2. Use the floristry wire to bind the two sprigs of rosemary together in the centre of each cross. 3. Place two crosses together and form a snowflake shape. 4. Using floristry wire, bind the two crosses together in the centre. Want to create a set of snowflakes? Cut your sets of four sprigs of rosemary into varying sizes to create different sized snowflakes. Use gardening twine and tie to one of the sprigs on the snowflake and then you will be able to hang your snowflakes in your window, fireplace, staircase or on your Christmas tree. You could also make a pine cone star by gluing the base of five cones to form a star shape, wrapping raffia around it, between the cones, leaving enough to make a loop from which to hang the star, and add holly sprigs and berries to the centre with floristry wire or glue.

NATURAL PLACE SETTINGS You will need: • Stem of bay, stem of holly and a couple of sprigs of rosemary • Floristry wire • Gardening twine • Scissors Step by step: 1. Select a stem of bay, a stem of holly and a couple of sprigs of rosemary 2. Cut them to size. 3. Arrange them how you want them to look when bunched together. Keep the foliage facing forwards. 4. With floristry wire, bind the bunch of foliage together. 5. Go over this wire by wrapping the twine over the top and forming a pretty bow at the front. You can completely cover the stems with the twine or leave some showing, it's up to you. Attach a personalised tag to each one and use them as place settings for your Christmas dinner table.

BEST OF THE BUNCH Rhus (sumach) The glorious autumn we've had has been enhanced by the spectacular foliage display of fiery reds and oranges produced by the rhus, or stag's horn sumach, whose female plants produce strange-looking, velvety, crimson fruits. Sumachs are grown for their brilliant autumn hues and large palm-like leaves which turn orange, red and purple. The shrub will grow anywhere but it should be pruned regularly or it will become leggy and bare. The most common type is R. Typhina, whose branches will grow to 12ft or more if left unpruned. If you want a smaller type, go for R. glabra.

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Harvesting celeriac It's a hugely flavoursome root veg which can be combined with potato and garlic for a delicious mash or grated into salads to add a fresh flavour. When the stem base has swelled to around 10cm in diameter it should be ready for harvesting. The leaves should be cut off the root and can be added to stocks and soups. Once you've dug it up, trim off the fibrous roots and clean off excess soil, then dry it in a cool, frost-free place before storiing it in dry sand. You can leave celeriac in the ground over winter, but beware that the slugs might get to it first. You can also freeze it by cubing and blanching it. WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK • Insulate containers to reduce the risk of roots freezing. • Tackle overgrown deciduous hedging, pruning it back hard to encourage new growth for next season. Don't trim evergreen hedges now. • Apply a bulky organic mulch around the base of trees, shrubs and climbers. • Plant bare-root and container-grown roses. • Plant tulips, lilies and hyacinths in beds, borders and containers. • Cut back the top growth on ornamental grasses that don't look attractive at this time of year. • Thin out canes on established bamboos. • Clear fallen leaves from the lawn, beds and borders. • Brush toadstools off the lawn using a broom. • Protect less hardy bulbs such as nerines and agapanthus by mulching the area where they are planted. • Send off for catalogues from specialist fruit tree nurseries. • Cut back faded foliage from pond and marginal plants before it falls in the water. • Prune redcurrants, blackcurrants and gooseberries if you haven't already done so.

It's important to think through all your family's needs when adapting and expanding your home, because doing the wrong home improvements can be an expensive mistake. I know a couple, for example, who are trying to force their starter home into being a family home now that they have three children. They've converted the loft into a bedroom and built a home office in the back garden, but the office takes up half the garden and the house is top heavy, with too many bedrooms for the amount of living space downstairs. They've spent a lot of money, but not necessarily on the right home improvements - or the right house.

1

kids on the first floor with the family bathroom, and the grandparents on the ground floor with a bathroom, shower room or wet room, is a great arrangement, if there's enough space. Loft conversions can be done successfully in all sorts of homes, but finding space for a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom, shower room or wet room can be more of a challenge.

2

A downstairs cloakroom, comprising a toilet and basin, is a must in family homes, and sometimes even a small cloakroom can be turned into a shower room or wet room for elderly family members who struggle to get up the stairs. When the cloakroom is too tiny for a shower tray, opt for a wet room, where the whole room effectively becomes the shower tray. The only problem is that wet rooms can be expensive because of the waterproofing and tiling involved.

3

Many homes have a separate loo and bathroom. This is a dated layout, but can work better in multigenerational homes than knocking the two rooms together, because a separate loo can still be used when someone's in the bathroom. Separate loos rarely have basins, though, so fitting a small one is a really good idea. Nothing can lead to family tensions more than queues for the loo or shower, especially when everyone's getting ready at the same time, so getting the plumbing right can go a long way to creating multi-generational harmony.

Open-plan living space (usually a kitchendiner/family room) is what most families want because it's great for entertaining and enables everyone to be together, but doing different things if they want. The key to successful open-plan space is to divide it into different 'zones', so you have clearly defined areas for cooking, dining, sitting, studying, etc. Open-plan kitchen-diners/family rooms are often achieved by knocking two or more rooms into one and adding a ground-floor extension, which isn't cheap but can be a lifesaver in busy multigenerational homes. Separating living space, such as a more formal sitting room away from the hustle and bustle of family life, can also be ideal for some family members. If you have three or more generations living under one roof, dividing up the house horizontally for sleeping is often the best solution. Having mum and dad in a loft conversion with an en suite, the

LOOK TO THE LIGHT:Layout 1 02/12/2016 14:04 Page 2

HOME LIVING

"Lighting really matters in a home and can literally transform it," promises George Clarke, architect and TV's popular property presenter of George Clarke's Amazing Spaces and The Restoration Man. "I've seen great buildings ruined by bad lighting schemes, and great lighting improve bad buildings. It can truly make that much difference. What's fantastic these days, is that there are affordable, effective ways of personally tailoring lighting schemes, using technology like smart phones and tablets, which a decade ago, would have costs thousands." Clarke, who's currently working with Philips lighting, believes good lighting doesn't just have a visual effect, but can also help improve our wellbeing. "Artificial light can now mimic natural light and light systems can be programmed to suit our body rhythms. Replicating a soothing sunset glow in the evening can help people relax and encourage relaxation and sleep, while gradually increasing light levels in the morning to mimic sunrise can encourage us to wake in a more gentle fashion. Lights conjuring the effect of natural sunlight indoors may offset the negative effect of a grey day outside. There's almost no limit to what can be achieved." LIGHT TOUCH "A common mistake people make is only having light coming from one source - for instance, simply having a ceiling light. In reality, good lighting is achieved by creating different layers of light which conjure variation, texture and atmosphere," says Clarke. "Clever accent lighting - wall sconces, floodlights, recessed lights or track lighting - can dramatically change a space and highlight key areas or architectural features. Even just hanging an adjustable pendant light over a dining table will define the space and make it feel more intimate. "Coloured lighting is also a fantastic way to add a 'wow' factor, especially if the light source is hidden. Use coloured light strips above kitchen units, but, to get the maximum effect, keep the background a neutral white as a contrast."

"There are so many ways to draw the eye. Bare bulbs are very much on-trend, as are metallic finishes and sculptural shapes. Table lights are a really good way to partition areas in a room, so a light on a side table behind a sofa will create a visual break in an open plan room. "Do bear in mind colours and surfaces reflect and absorb light in different ways. Shiny materials like satin, silk and metal bounce light around a room, whereas darker, denser materials, such as wool and velvet, soak up light."

TRICK OF THE LIGHT "Lighting should be flexible, so you can zone different areas and alter light levels to change mood, atmosphere or focus it to better suit a specific activity," says Clarke. "A good scheme allows you to instantly reinvent a space - or, in increasingly popular openplan living rooms, the areas within the space - without having to change a room's overall layout.

5 TIPS FOR USING AN ARCHITECT

By Julian Gray

1

While architects can be expensive, they don't have to be and their knowledge and experience can be worth its weight in gold. As well as offering design expertise, architects can add value in lots of ways.

They have technical knowledge, can help you negotiate the building regulations, party wall and planning process and can manage the project from start to finish, if you want them to, including finding and managing tradespeople and consultants. As they use these people regularly for projects, they may be able to get better prices than you can. They can help financially in other ways, too, such as devising the best design for your budget, improving energy efficiency and increasing your home's saleability and value. 42 | www.life-mags.com

5 TIPS FOR USING AN ACHITECT:Layout 1 01/12/2016 19:14 Page 2

HOME LIVING

A good first step is to go to the 'find an architect' section of the Royal Institute of British Architects' (RIBA) website - www.architecture.com. When you've found some suitable candidates, find out if they're interested in your project and what sort of ideas and relevant experience they have. If you can see similar projects they've done, this will give you a good idea of what to expect. It's also important to have a good relationship with your architect, as how you get on and work together can play a big part in the success, or not, of the project.

2

If the prospect of finding and employing an architect seems too daunting, some building companies will do it for you. Loft-conversion specialists, for example, usually offer a complete renovation package, including the services of an architect, which makes life easier for you.

5

Once you've chosen an architect, drawing up a contract and giving them a clear brief is vital. Also establish how you'll be paying them. Some architects take a percentage of the total cost of the project, some charge per hour for the time they spend on it, and others charge a flat fee.

3

Your chosen architect should send you draft plans so you can see if they've understood what you want or not. If you'd like changes to the plans, make sure you see the revised versions before they're sent to the local council for planning permission - in my experience, miscommunication between you and your architect is all too easy. Your architect will also need to draw up plans for your builder and building control inspector don't get builders round for quotes until you have these plans because they won't be able to work out the cost of the project.

SPARE ROOM:Layout 1 02/12/2016 14:14 Page 1

Styleto Spare by Sam Wylie-Harris

Poor old spare room. It spends most of the year as an understudy to other 'headlining' living areas, and never seems to get the chance to take centre stage - waiting in the wings, hankering to be filled with something more exciting than household junk. But hark! The holiday season is (almost) in full swing; sleigh bells are ringing, invitations have been extended to family and friends and, it's likely to be a full house on Christmas Day. Finally, the spare room has its moment to shine! But before the curtains are up and it's show time, why not give it a spruce up? A few little touches might be all it takes...

SLEEP LIKE A YULE LOG "Transforming a chaotic spare room into a cosy guest bedroom may seem like a daunting task, but with a few simple changes, it's easy to create a homely space where guests can relax and unwind," says Kate Tansley, creative director at Multiyork.

And when it comes to finishing touches, a well-made bed with a cosy throw and an array of festive scatter cushions, will create a comfy and inviting look that will instantly make the in-laws feel welcome. Add a few simple necessities, such as guest towels, and some festive treats - maybe a wreath above the bed, a pine-scented candle and some mince pies (along with a tawny port) on a pretty plate, and guests will feel super-pampered. Alternatively, an inflatable guest bed (with the latest comfort-enhancing technology) will gift your guests a great nights' sleep; especially if you invest in a plump, thick duvet with a high tog count, so you don't have to worry about having the central heating blasting all night long. There's plenty of winter wonderland-themed bed linen and accessories, or Nordic-style designs - ideal for Christmas around right now.

"Space-saving and versatile, a sofa bed is a great way to accommodate family and friends in any size of home, and will allow a space to function not just as a guest bedroom, but as a home office or snug too. "With a huge variety of styles, sizes and customisable options available, it's also easier than ever to find one that matches your decor scheme," says Tansley. continues overleaf... 46 | www.life-mags.com

NAUGHTY OR NICE Children star at Christmas, and there's nothing more adorable than watching them unwrap their presents and hearing their squeals of delight. But all this excitement can be exhausting, and building a special space to keep them entertained will be a lifesaver for busy mums and dads (and grandmas and grandpas). "Creating a festive-themed room suitable for children is easy with our cute and cuddly winter animal favourites, adorned on warming brushed cotton bedding to stay snug and cosy," says Katie Glenn, interiors expert at Julian Charles. "Layer with soft faux mohair and fur throws and cushions for extra comfort, and add the perfect finishing touches with Christmas themed accessories." Nothing says Christmas like twinkling fairy lights - an easy way to create a magical atmosphere kids will love. Once they've opened their stockings, why not fill them with torn wrapping paper, and arrange them next to their favourite cuddly toys? That way, they have their own festive play area to snuggle up in for a snooze, or show off their new presents.

SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS The run-up to the big day's been hectic, you've had an early start - and treasure that moment when you can finally sit down with a nice glass of red by the fire... There's no reason why the spare room can't be transformed into a cleverly curated 'cocktail bar' and snug room for grown-ups. A cosy armchair, mini fir tree, fairy lights around the window frames, plus a sumptuous throw, some scented candles and a cocktail cabinet, will add ambience and a festive feel that's best bar none (and beats retreating to the loo for some peace and quiet!). And if you suddenly have to accommodate a surprise guest after Happy Hour or the Queen's Speech, a bed that folds out of a box - such as The Hetty from sofa.com - can double up as a pouffe with a tray of champagne flutes, before it's turned into a blissful bed where they can turn in for the night.

elemental beauty How do you perceive beauty? Truly it is in the eye of the beholder, but it’s fair to say, natural beauty cannot be manufactured, because it is natural. Nature shows us beauty in so many ways everywhere we look but sometimes, the greatest beauty is what you can’t see! Hidden beneath the very ground we walk on, the earth keeps its greatest secrets. We all know the beauty of the rare and priceless gemstones such as diamonds and rubies and the myriad of stones adorning jewellery shops the world over, but there is so much more hidden underground. Semi-precious stones such as amethyst and rose quartz are just some of the popular stones crafted into artisan jewellery and supplied by new age shops. Elemental Beauty goes far beyond personal adornment…

We are a Jersey business that has been sourcing high quality semi-precious minerals for discerning clients for a while now and using our extensive knowledge and supplier base to showcase natural beauty in forms you would never imagine; sinks, tables, vases and all manner of furniture and work surfaces, large feature pieces for hallways and receptions, stunning desk pieces and all manner of beautiful objets d’art and in a multitude of stunning natural colours. Also very desirable are our petrified wood pieces. Petrified wood has been created by millennia and layers of earth surrounding tree stumps, branches and so on and petrifying into solid rock. It still retains all the characteristics of a tree, including the bark and the natural rings and knots, making it extraordinarily beautiful. Imagine owning furniture and everyday items, crafted millions of years ago. The pieces we source are of the highest quality and our suppliers can create bespoke items to order. If it’s a twelve-seater table in petrified wood or a complete kitchen with amethyst work surfaces and matching tiles and splashbacks we can provide it. Whether for a humble flat or a multi-million pound luxury development or a corporate headquarters, we can pay you a visit and discuss your needs.

WELCOME ABOARD THE SILVER SPIRIT! by Rebecca Underwood

For those seeking an unforgettable Christmas gift for someone special, Silversea, founded in the 1990’s, recipient of the USA’s Global Traveller 2016 Leisure Travel Award for ‘best luxury cruise line’ and a Condé Nast Traveller 2015 award for food in the ‘world’s best small cruise ship’ category, offers a voyage like no other. This Italian, family owned business, features a fleet of eight small ships and provides exceptional standards of service and comfort. Embarking at Piraeus, Athens, along with our bulging suitcases, my mother and I were enchanted with our first view of the sleek lines of the Silver Spirit, which was launched in 2009 and carries 540 passengers, served by a dedicated crew of 376. The simple and efficient check-in procedures ensured that no time was wasted and we were promptly escorted to our luxurious and spacious suite, sumptuously furnished with a plump sofa, two leather tub chairs, soft carpeting and comfortable beds swathed in crisp white linens with soft feather filled pillows. We took a moment to relax on our private veranda, admiring the view across the

glittering ocean, and our charming butler arrived. Graciously introducing himself, he poured two glasses of chilled champagne with a flourish, and presented us with a selection of Bvlgari and Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries. He then requested our preferences for keeping the fridge fully stocked with complimentary soft drinks, wines and spirits, and the contents of our fruit basket. The luggage was swiftly delivered, and whilst our butler unpacked, we headed for the deck to watch ‘anchors aweigh’ as we sailed sedately on the sparkling waters of the Aegean, bound for Santorini, Rhodes, Aghios Nikolaos, Katakolon, Argostoli, Corfu, Dubrovnik and Venice. The Silver Spirit offers eight passenger decks, with interiors adorned with an imposing art collection including works by Rembrandt, Chagall and Picasso and several Salvador Dali sculptures. The decor follows modern and Art Deco themes with a soothing palette of colours and there are several lavishly furnished bars including the Panorama Lounge where Amedeo, an excellent pianist, performs and he entices passengers onto the dance floor with ease.

Other socialising spots include the Connoisseur’s Corner, a clubby cigar and cognac lounge where guests are welcome to relax in low-slung leather chairs and enjoy their preferred cigar, fine cognacs, vintage wines, ports, and a selection of the world’s finest caviar including Royal Oscietra. There is no shortage of on board dining venues and we took advantage of the open seating option offered by the ship’s main dining room, The Restaurant, which serves modern Mediterranean and regional dishes. I sampled the mouthwatering broiled lobster tail with drawn butter, vegetable vermicelli, parsley potatoes and lobster coulis, and served with a glass of Vincent Girardin CortonCharlemagne 2011, it was perfect. Up with the larks the following morning and our ship had docked in Santorini, which was a dazzling sight from our veranda. After a delicious in-suite breakfast, served by our butler with much aplomb, we hurried off the ship to explore our first port of call. Back on board in time for luncheon we dined in La Terrazza, which offers a buffet style extravaganza. Temptations included a choice of meat or fish, pasta or pizza, a salad bar and indulgent desserts that just cannot be ignored. We dined ‘al fresco’ on the back deck, cool in the shade of the overhead canopy, and then an afternoon snooze in the sunshine was just the ticket. For water babes, the pool deck features an impressive swimming pool with three bubbling Jacuzzis surrounded by ultra comfortable sun loungers and the pool bar and grill serves light fare for luncheon, which means that those of us who prefer not to be disturbed during our sun bathing sessions may dine ‘in situ’. After a pre dinner tipple on our veranda we made our way to The Bar, where Captain 52 | www.life-mags.com

The Restaurant

Mino Pontillo’s Welcome Reception was in full swing. Tasty canapés, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails were served by a bevy of dapper waiters and our fellow passengers were simply dazzling in their elegant formal wear. Ladies, dressed in stylish, flowing evening gowns and gentlemen resplendent in their evening attire.

Another highlight of the cruise was a performance by Moss Hills, the talented cruise director. A first rate entertainer and a master drummer, guitarist, saxophonist, keyboard player and singer, he soon had the audience singing along to his repertoire and some took to their feet in the aisles with fervour.

Later we dined in the Stars Supper Club; a retro experience, which recalls the romance and opulence of Manhattan’s legendary Rainbow Room. Delectable small plate selections are served on food sensitive dishes whilst guests are entertained by the ‘live’ jazz band and a cabaret vocalist. And in the likely event that diners are overwhelmed with the desire to display their nifty footwork on the dance floor mid-course, the food remains at the right temperature.

For those keen on activities, a daily programme is delivered to each stateroom with details of events held during the day and included a stretch class, Pilates, Yoga, table tennis, shuffleboard, golf putting and a number of enrichment lectures, seminars and cooking demonstrations.

Other dining options include Le Champagne, the only Relais & Châteaux restaurant at sea, which features a small walk-in wine room. For fans of Asian fusion cuisine, Seishin, offers sampler menus or a nine course degustation and by night, La Terrazza, presents a wide range of authentic Italian dishes. For those seeking the utmost privacy, there is the option of in-suite dining, selecting dishes, course by course, from The Restaurant menu, or from the room service menu, available around the clock. Christmas Glamour By Penny Downes from Pennyfeathers As we see another year come to an end the Christmas party season revs up again. As an annual article I like to preview the trends for this season and help you too brush up your party make up skills with some top colour trends and looks for this season. The glamorous time is fast approaching so all you'll need to keep your look on trend is written below...so let me take you through this seasons top beauty looks. So carrying on the trend from last year it's all about a Bold Lip Colour. Rich, luxurious berry colours are the great lip look for the festive season. As seen all over the Autumn / Winter catwalks and on every celebrity we are loving it! It's a bold dark look, luxuriously moisturising textures with smooth lips to make them shout out. Go for damson shades if your pale or a chestnut hue for a warmer skin. Overlay dark colours with a black lipstick too give a dark ombrĂŠ look to be bang on trend. Line the lip in a nude liner or matching lip colour for a clean and precise look. Build the colour with a brush and blot between layers for long wearing colour. With dark lips being so big we need to keep bases and eyes very nude but illuminated with highlighting products. A peachy glow can be achieved with using a cream hi-lighter on the cheek bones, eye lids and cupid's bow. Use a gentle shimmering

highlighter all over the eye area and kohl pencil to line the eye and finish with lashings of mascara or a set of false lashes. As its party season glitter is back and back with a bang. Now I may hear you cheer or groan as you either love or hate. Glitter doesn't have to be scary and it doesn't have too be for the teeny boppers either. You can wear it subtle as a liner or full on with a festival flare on the cheeks. Diffuse it from the out corner of the eye too the cheek bone for a full party look. A spot on the inner corner of the eye is very simple for a pop of sparkle anytime of the day or night. Finally the look for this season, and I hope it's one too last, is the look of you! Make up isn't too be worn to hide but too enhance this year. Be you, be comfortable and be glam. Embrace you and you'll glow. www.penny-feathers.co.uk

Literally - a slouchy two-piece or jumpsuit is right on the money, paired with chunky platforms if you want to tell a Seventies story, or barely-there stilettos and a choker for a nod to the Nineties. Nineties-style velvet frocks are equally on-trend - think cowl detailing, bias cuts and spaghetti straps.

TOP MARKS 'I MUST have a new party dress' may be the most common mantra when the invitations start arriving, but this year we're seeing the return of the 'going out top', and that's a very good thing. Why? Because you've probably already got the black tux trousers or pleated midi skirt that will perfectly show off an attention-grabbing top, be it satin, sequin-encrusted or - this season's hottest property - the body top.

MISTLETOE AND WINE If a super-swanky invite calls for black tie dress code, you can go for all-out glam with a floor-length gown. Flattering and festive (without being OTT), dark red or burgundy are ideal for winter formalwear, especially when accented with gold accessories. And these winey hues provide the ideal opportunity to experiment with this season's dark berry make-up trend too.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Transform your life in 2017 by focusing on what you’ve got, rather than what you want! Every Christmas and New Year the shelves of newsagents brim over with publications full of top tips and strategies on how we can change our lives for the better in the coming year. This year I am going to suggest something completely different for 2017, focusing on what you have, rather than what you want Mark Shields Explains There is no doubt in my mind that setting goals in life helps us to get focused and gives us something realistic and different to aim for. The power of having a plan and a set of goals, triggers progress, creates momentum and drives change. Having said that understanding how your emotions play a role in your overall happiness some would say is even more important. Out of all of our choices of emotion, gratitude is now deemed the emotion that can lead us to joy, peace, true harmony and happiness in ourselves. Let us look at this powerful emotion in more detail and take a look at how this can work What is Gratitude? Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. In addition, behavioral and psychological research has shown the surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude.

Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress. Daily Rituals to re enforce your levels of gratitude? • Use gratitude to restart your life by appreciating what you have in life • Taking a few minutes every day to write down what you feel your grateful for will change your life • Writing a gratitude diary is very popular with a lot of people and these people set themselves a target of finding 10 things they feel grateful for every day and write them down • The more you realize and appreciate all that you already have and all that you already are, the more that you will get • We all have two very resourceful meditative mind states, which we experience twice a day. The first when we first wake up in the morning and the second last thing at night just before we drift off to sleep. I call these the Power States when in fact they are natural theta brainwave states that are similar to natural states of self - hypnosis continues overleaf...

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Feel Your Heart We're going to go on a journey of things you're grateful about, but first, feel your heart. Feel the power of your heart. Feel the strength of your heart. Feel grateful for your heart. Think about it: You didn't have to buy this heart. You didn't have to earn it. Someone thought enough of you to give you this heart, instantly, the moment you were born. As long as it beats, you're alive. Step into a moment in your life you can feel deep feeling of gratitude for. Breathe in your heart; hear what you heard then; feel what you felt then, right now. Feel so grateful. Feel that moment; it was sacred; you were blessed. Take It In Don't just think it. Feel, see, be there. Reach out and bring in another memory you can feel grateful for. Step in and feel the power and grace of that moment.

• Using positive affirmations directly linked to gratitude when entering both of these resourceful states will help our brains program our unconscious minds to focus on what we should be grateful for and by definition feel happier every day. Sports professionals use this same technique and they describe the results as “creating their own day” Practicing gratitude has been scientifically proven! The results of a study indicated that daily gratitude exercises resulted in higher report levels of: • • • • •

Alertness Enthusiasm Determination Optimism Energy

Additionally, the gratitude group experienced • • • • •

Less depression Less stress More likely to help others Exercised more regularly Made more progress toward personal goals

Bring a third moment in. Maybe this moment could be a coincidence. We all love a coincidence because we did nothing for it—something just happened. You met somebody, you went somewhere, and it led to something magnificent. Step into the gratitude of that moment and feel it as well. Take your hand off your heart and just continue to breathe, and go on a journey. Feel each moment, in your body, like you're there. Shift to Moments You're Proud Of Shift to a moment you're proud of. Bring in someone you're proud of. Breathe the way you do when you feel proud—along with the gratitude. Think of something you've accomplished in your life—small or big. Think of a romantic, sensual moment and bring that in too. Bring in a moment that made you laugh out loud. Did you ever laugh so hard that milk came out your nose or something like that? Bring it into your heart. Bring in a special moment with family or friends. Bring in a moment that was pure excitement. Make that sound of excitement out loud. Now, for 10 seconds, reach out and bring in moments from the future. Bring them in fast! And in the end, just shout the word "yes." Now, open your eyes.

People who feel grateful are also more likely to feel loved. Gratitude can become a positive habit, but only with discipline. With continued exercise, practicing gratitude will create more abundance, prosperity, well-being, and happiness than you ever thought possible. We're flooded with so much negative biochemistry that we can (easily) get hijacked. So the only solution is to flood your self with positive experiences. A Technique for you to practice everyday to help you feel more grateful Stay in the Moment First thing you want to do is shake your body out; then make your hands like claws and move back and forth, breathing in and out very rapidly. Then, stop, shake your body out, clap and say yes five times. Say: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Make a total excitement sound like when you were a little kid. Put your hand on your heart; close your eyes. 60 | www.life-mags.com

Summary I think its fair to say that most readers will accept that doing daily rituals to help us achieve a gratitude mindset has to be worth a try. The concept makes sense and the daily exercises and affirmations are achievable. The advice I give you as a reader is exactly the same as I give my clients. Practice these exercises for ten minutes everyday before you do anything else in the morning for four weeks and record in a gratitude diary how different you feel each day. I know you will be amazed. I love reading reader experiences so when you feel great get in touch and let me know at mark@lifepractice.co.uk

HOT OR COLD? By Stephen Cohu

With another year almost gone what has happened in the antiques and fine art business in 2016 and what do I think will happen in 2017? This business remains a guessing game of what to buy that will sell and what to avoid at any price! Things that were very expensive 20 years ago now almost have no price at all and some things that were completely overlooked now command high prices. The demand for traditional antique furniture and effects has been in decline for the last ten years. The market peaked in the early 21st century but then the rather unpredicted fall in demand and consequently prices began, gathering momentum until reaching new lows during the current year. If I could predict what will be hot and what will be cold I would have no stock because what I bought I would sell immediately. The reality is a showroom full of furniture, art, sculpture and decorative items plus four warehouses full of beautiful brown furniture, chaises longue, Victorian sofas etc., some of which I have owned since the dawn of civilisation. FASHION As I have repeatedly stated in the many articles I have written on buying antiques and collectables, you should buy what you like, not what you think you might make money on in the future. There are few markets more affected by tastes and fashion than the antiques business. Everyone knows that clothes go in and out of fashion, some fashions more outrageous than others, but you could almost say that furniture fashion follows clothes fashion. If you look at the clothes that are currently in fashion then you can predict what furniture and decoration will be in fashion. If you consider a few periods of history over the last 300 years then you will begin to understand what I mean. Art Deco furniture from the 1930s is angular with straight lines and clothing was the same. Mid Victorian furniture is very curvy and often a bit OTT, clothes were the same with women wearing impossibly enormous crinoline dresses. The 1960s and 70s saw the advent of platform shoes and flares, hippy clothes in bright often psychedelic colours and furniture and fabrics in modernist designs followed suit. Clothing is currently very restrained, muted colours and simple designs and IKEA fits the mood. ROOM SIZES AND MINIMALISM The size of houses that are being built today are smaller than ever with low ceiling heights and open plan combinations of lounge/ kitchen/ diner. Most kitchen and bedroom furniture is fitted and the rest of the house has very little in it except perhaps a sofa or two and a coffee table. A vase with a curly hazel twig may stand in the corner but otherwise there is no evidence of life, no books,

no magazines, and no ornaments. This style of living by younger and now even older generations certainly puts me up against it! However, even in the most minimalist environment there is definitely a place for certain types of antiques and decoration. Smaller rooms can accommodate smaller pieces of early furniture with bags of history and character. A statement piece of post-war glass or a vintage angle poise lamp can bring life to an otherwise clinical room. KNOWLEDGE With prices low, antiques have become far cheaper than buying the new equivalent but the younger generation has lost the confidence to go into an antiques shop because they know nothing about them. Few people who are currently looking to furnish a house have grown up with any old or second hand items around them. The problem is now that they know little about them other than what is portrayed on the numerous antiques TV shows and they are nervous to go into an antiques shop. There are two main reasons for this; firstly they are embarrassed that they appear ignorant and lack knowledge and secondly they are worried they may not be getting a good deal. It is fair to say that any second hand item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it whereas people are happy to pay breath-taking prices for new things, soft furnishings being a particularly good example. That is where they will overpay, not in an antiques shop! A new Georgian style wing chair will probably cost several thousand pounds and will be made of poor timber and stuffed with cardboard and all sorts of filling. A Georgian wing armchair in good condition can be bought for under £1000. The new chair once purchased is worth nothing, the Georgian chair will hold most of its value. HOT OR NOT! So bearing in mind the above, what is hot and what is cold? Remember cold does not necessarily mean wrong or bad, it just means it will probably represent incredible value for money. Things that are hot may be cold in a few years’ time and the opposite may be true for cold. FURNITURE HOT Post- war design as it will fit in with modern living styles is fashionable and generally not too big. Examples include good Scandinavian design sideboards and chairs in teak and rosewood, early Ercol and G-plan. Attractive pieces of early furniture that

are not too big are in demand, pedestal desks, rustic farm tables, anything in lighter wood also. Any item that looks good on a clear wall will sell. People are buying quality “statement” pieces that are useful and look fantastic in a modern environment. COLD Many items of traditional antique furniture, great quality that will last for ever but are currently out of fashion such as large sideboards, linen presses, ordinary Georgian and Victorian large chests of drawers, work tables, Regency and Victorian rosewood furniture, too dark. These items represent fantastic value for money. FREEZING Anything that no longer has a use, even if it’s pretty has virtually no price. Examples would be Victorian davenports and canterburies. Large Georgian bureau can be bought for just a few hundred pounds, useful for storage but now no longer with a use for letter writing, representing even more exceptional value for money. Display cabinets are being virtually given away in auction as people do not want to own the things you would put in them! FINE ART AND PRINTS HOT Contemporary art preferably not too large by known 20th and 21st century artists for example Ken Howard and Fred Cuming is in strong demand. Modern limited edition prints can be bought for very little in the secondary market compared to their issue price. A small oil painting Try and buy work by well-known by Ken Howard, hot. artists as they are more likely to rise in value rather than generic works by “jobbing “artists. By spending a little more money you get a lot better art.

Turkey carpets are keenly sought by interior designers. Good sculptures by 20th century greats such as Barbara Hepworth are now out of reach of ordinary people. There are many fine works available by not so well known artists that may well rise in value in the future. Attractive Scandinavian and Italian glassware is more popular than ever and looks stunning arranged in a group in a well-lit environment. COLD Cut glass decanters and virtually anything made of silver is not in demand! Silver has the advantage that at least it is worth the metal content! People tend to avoid anything that may lead to a cluttered look. Poor quality garden centre ornaments seem to be popular but they should be cold as you can buy fine quality originals for less money! FREEZING Totally freezing is anything that went with an open fireplace- fenders, copper kettles, brass bachins, bed warmers- because people no longer have fireplaces. Most homes are now built without a fireplace at all and older houses are now fitted with stoves.

Old brass milk can, freezing!

General collectables are now car boot only, even down to Victorian copper lustre jugs and basic Staffordshire figures. Anything by Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, and the Bradford Exchange has very little second hand value as do most collectables popular in the 1980s and 90s such as Hornsea and Sylvac.

COLD Superbly painted Victorian and early 20th century oil paintings by good artists such as Vicat Cole and Alfred Vickers, formerly in the thousands now in the hundreds. Again you can own fantastic art for little money because it is not fashionable. Also cold are large scale works by any artist because people simply do not have the room to accommodate them. FREEZING Framed hand coloured plates from broken up books, Victorian engravings and any unlimited multiples from prolific 20th century artists such as William Russell Flint. These can be bought from car boot sales for a couple of pounds if you want them! Covering your walls with pictures went out with the advent of minimalism and so prices of cheaper general furnishing art went through the floor. DECORATION HOT Persian carpets and rugs are very popular as the trend is to have wooden rather than carpeted floors. Look out for less fussy examples of tribal weavings as these are ever more popular. Muted colours are also better but the large red ground Ushak

Inlaid corner cabinet, fine quality but things in corners are a no-no hence the market is cold. This represents a superb buy for the discerning furnisher. MY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR MESSAGE Buy what YOU like not what fashion dictates as at the minute once you’ve seen the interior of one house you’ve seen them all. Live dangerously- go into an antiques shop and buy something different! We wish all past, present and future customers a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and look forward to seeing you all soon.

SPANISH OSCARS

a night at the

Spanish Oscars

Looking ahead to 2017, the Jersey Chamber perform a night of Spanish works at the Jersey Opera House on 28th January 2017 As well as being recognised for his wealth of repertoire, Christopher is also highly regarded for his work with younger musicians. These skills will be seen as he works with the youth of Jersey as well as established players. The concert also transports the listener to the warmer climates of the Wild West with Ennio Morrcone’s iconic film score to the 1966 movie The Good the Bad and the Ugly. And the spanisg medley includes such songs as La Bamba from the classic hit and film.

There’s a chance to banish the blues with an uplifting Spanish evening on Saturday 28th January at the Jersey Opera House. Presented by Music in Action, turn up the temperature and increase the tempo with a Night at the Spanish Oscars. Join the Jersey Chamber Orchestra for a night of evocative music that is guaranteed to warm up any winters evening. Playing alongside the Jersey Chamber Orchestra will be Carlos Bonell in the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto as well as a medley of Spanish songs sung by St Michael’s Chamber Choir. Featuring the renowned acoustic classical guitarist Carlos Bonell, who was described by Classical Guitar Magazine UK as "one of the great communicators of the guitar world". Carlos will be playing the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto best known as the Concierto de Aranjuez, which was memorably performed in the 1996 movie Brassed Off. The Concierto de Aranjuez is a composition for classical guitar and orchestra that was written in 1939, it is probably Rodrigo's best-known work, and its success established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the twentieth century. A potent mix of beautiful melodies and virtuoso guitar playing, the concerto is bound to inspire and delight the senses. Rodrigo s Concierto de Aranjuez is performed and recorded more than all the other guitar concertos put together, and the outer movements are full of Spanish warmth and colour, framing a central adagio that builds in intensity like a poignant prayer. Carlos Bonell’s 1989 imaginative account of the solo part is considered one of th eal time great recordings presenting an exceptionally clear, atmospheric recording Conducting the Jersey Chamber Orchestra will be Christopher Seaman who is one of the most respected international figures. Christopher Seaman was Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (New York) until 2011, and was subsequently named Conductor Laureate. He has also been Music Director to the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra (Florida) for ten years, Conductor-in-Residence with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Adviser of the San Antonio Symphony. 66 | www.life-mags.com

Finally as the evening comes to a close there will be enjoy a rousing performance of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro as it instrumentally layers to a roof-raising crescendo. Known by many as the music that Torville and Dean danced so memorably to their gold medal in the Winter Olympics. With a programme set with fulfilling music the evening is sure to be a feast for the senses. Chairman James Mews stated, “We are delighted to be bringing back such a world renowned figure as Carlos Bonell to perform this iconic piece. The last time it was performed in Jersey was 9 years ago with the very same orchestra. That night raised the roof and we are sure that Carlos will do the same in 2017.”

Music in Action Educational Events In addition to the performance in the evening members of the orchestra will play in educational concerts in schools on the 26th and 27th January teaching and inspiring our young students and pupils about music and film. This kind of educational exercise is vital for young people not only for their musical development, but has also been shown to benefit teamwork and concentration skills. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our young musicians to receive teaching from the highest calibre players. The Jersey Chamber Orchestra will be led by Anna Smith from the BBC Symphony Orchestra who has led the Jersey Chamber Orchestra for the last 8 years. Anna performs as a soloist and with the Elgin Trio, as well as being a first violinist in the BBC Symphony Orchestra. A Night at the Spanish Oscars is being performed on 28th January at the Opera House. All proceeds raised will be in aid of the Oscar Maclean Foundation. The event A Night at the Spanish Oscars is organised by Music in Action and is the third concert in remembrance of Oscar Maclean who passed away from a Grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma tumour in 2013. The charity in his honour support one community project each year that will benefit young Jersey cancer patients and their families. MICHAEL GINNS DECEMBER 2016:Layout 1 01/12/2016 19:56 Page 1

MICHAEL GINNS MBE

Occupation Liberation Extracts from the forthcoming biography of

Michael Ginns MBE You may not personally know locally acclaimed Historian and Author Michael Ginns, however, if you have ever frequented the War Tunnels, been a member of the Occupation Society or read local publications, his name and work will have brushed by you whether you are aware of it or not. In this, the final article in the series chronicling Michael’s life, he talks of Dinner with The Queen, Time Team at the War Tunnels and a few other odds and ends to tie up his life story…. by Juanita Shield-Laignel ichael and I began this quest to tell his life story, in 2014 and during one of our numerous recording sessions, the telephone rang. Michael answered and I sat patiently waiting to continue, whilst he advised the caller on a bunker type structure, found in a garden not far from the round-about at Five Oaks. The gentleman had been told, by various people, that if anyone would know the history of said structure, it would be Michael.

M

Michael Ginns MBE

As it happened, Michael hadn’t come across this particular building in his life time and it wasn’t on the fortification records. Being rather small, Michael concluded it was probably a telephone junction bunker and possibly connected to the old Huelin’s site (now Normans) at Five Oaks which had been taken over by the Germans during the War, as an engineering site. This telephone call, I was told, was one of many. “People ring me all the time for information about such things and I’m always happy to talk to them.” said Michael; pragmatic as always. Having spent most of his adult working life as a Postman, Michael had access to all the nooks and crannies of the Island that lead him to discover and retain vast amounts of information about the Island’s German fortifications. This served his enthusiasm and membership of the Occupation Society well and set him in good stead to write his book, Jersey Occupied and be called upon as a consultant to the Jersey War Tunnels. Michael elaborates. “I had always been such a disappointment to my Mother. Having lost a baby before I was born, she was naturally very protective of me but also had high hopes I would make something of myself and in her opinion, my choice to be a Postman was rather a let-down. But I firmly believe, had I not been able to fiddle about the Island like I did, I wouldn’t have achieved all the things I have. I certainly wouldn’t have written my book, received my MBE or had dinner with the Queen.” “Mother died in 1969 so sadly, didn’t see me achieve any of these things, but when I was sitting in the ball room at Buckingham Palace, looking up at that enormous Imperial Crown above the thrones, I thought to myself ‘I hope you are proud of me now Mother’ and I’m sure she was.” I asked Michael to tell me about his dinner with the Queen and how it had come about. “It was the 2005 Royal visit. There was to be a Banquet at the Grand Hotel and anyone could enter their name on a list, at their local Parish Hall if you

wanted to go. Josephine and I had already put our names on the list, when we received a letter from the Bailiffs Office saying ‘would you be willing to accept an invitation to a Banquet with Her Majesty the Queen’.

pass out. Eventually I was interviewed by Time Team but so little of it was used in the resultant programme, I have wondered since, given my condition at the time, if it was all worth it.”

Of course we accepted, but it turned out to be rather a busy time, as I had also been invited give a talk to the Jersey Society in London, a club set up during 1906 for Island ex-pats living in the UK. We got back from London on 3rd May 2005 and the Banquet was to coincide with the 9th May Liberation celebrations. So as not to be bothered with parking, taxis or queuing, my step-son Matthew, kindly booked us a room at The Grand so we had time to get ready, at our leisure.

This grand finale in Michael’s series of articles coincides with his 89th birthday and he is understandably, feeling the pinch of time. When interviewing him he often says, “I’m not long for this world my girl, you’d best get on with this book.” Given his ability to slip right back into temps passé and tell me stories, times, dates and facts as if they were yesterday, it would be easy to imagine he will go on forever, however, Michael originally put his trust in me to tell his life story, as his health is gradually failing him.

There was, understandably, very high security and we were surrounded by sniffer dogs and plain clothed police men and women. It was all very ‘other worldly’.

It has been an absolute honour to work with Michael in this collaborative way. His life had been quite astonishing in so many ways and his sense of humour and candour, kept me entertained and totally in awe. It has been a pleasure to share this with you and I hope you have appreciated the snippets selected for your enjoyment. Work has been underway to bring you a book, including all the information in this series of 10 articles featured in the Jerseylife Magazine and oh very so much more….it will be on sale in the New Year.

As we were escorted from a marquee on the terrace there were throngs of people loitering on the stairs trying to get a glimpse of the Queen. We had already been advised we would be sitting on table 1 with the Queen as head of our table. I was quite flabbergasted. Each table had a head of table, the Governor was the head of one, various States Members on others and The Duke of Edinburgh on another. I was flanked by the Bailiff’s wife on one side and Fiona Spur on the other. We didn’t get to directly talk to the Queen, as etiquette dictates; one can’t talk across the table but just converses with the people either side of you. The Queen spent her evening talking, seemingly quite seriously, with Chief Minister, Frank Walker and the Bailiff and the rest of us made polite conversation amongst ourselves. Once dinner was finished the Queen stood and smiled at us all politely and left the table. We were all then free to move about and went out onto the balcony to watch the most fantastic fireworks across the bay.

Thank you

Occupation Liberation

It was quite surreal coming down for Breakfast the next day and sitting near the window looking out across to Elizabeth Castle and watching everyone going to work as normal. Her Majesty of course stayed at Government house and it was reported to us later ‘Her Majesty really enjoyed her time in Jersey and thanks everyone involved’.” I recalled having seen Michael appear briefly on a Time Team programme about anti-aircraft battery, fortifications in particular bunkers above The War Tunnels so asked Michael to tell me about this once in a life time experience. “It wasn’t quite as glamorous as one might think.” Michael began “Of course I was delighted to be asked, however, it was the most stinking hot day and I was still suffering the after effects of an aesthetic for a knee operation. We were required to all stand around for hours waiting our turn to be filmed and I was leaning against a tree trying to stay upright as I felt extremely dizzy. Luckily Howard Butlin-Baker spotted my plight and bundled me into a 4x4 and whacked the air conditioning on and had water brought for me. Thank goodness for his quick thinking as I was sure I was going to

FIRST DRIVE AUDI R8 V10 SPYDER By Darren Cassey WHAT'S NEW?: The latest generation Audi R8 coupe has been on the market for a year now, so aside from the Spyder's retractable roof, there's nothing particularly new to shout about. That's not a problem, though, because the roof's opening and closing mechanism is certainly worth a mention. It takes 20 seconds to complete its movement, with the rear deck lifting up as arms twist and turn to accommodate the cloth canopy. What's new compared with the previous generation R8 Spyder? Well that's where things start to get a bit more interesting. It's 25kg lighter but 50% more rigid thanks to the new aluminium-intensive chassis, which only weighs 8kg more than it does in the coupe. Extra stiffness comes from reinforcements in the sills, A-pillar and windscreen frame so the car doesn't tie itself in knots when the road gets fun.

LOOKS AND IMAGE: Just one of the Audi R8 Spyder's many key selling points is its gorgeous styling. It somehow manages to look understated, imposing and elegant in equal measure, especially in the Daytona grey pearl-effect paint our car was daubed in. Quality exudes from every inch of the car, from the perfect shut lines of the body to the minimalist interior.

MOTORING

Every R8 is handmade on its own plinth in a dedicated factory, and the attention to detail that affords is immediately evident. The only bugbear is the driving position, which is hindered by the roof mechanism's packaging. The seat doesn't slide as far back as it does in the coupe, meaning drivers more than six feet tall will struggle to fit.

Audi's stunning Virtual Cockpit, which replaces the traditional dials with a configurable 12.3-inch screen, comes as standard. Also fitted at no extra cost are 19-inch alloy wheels, LED front and rear lights, Nappa leather interior upholstery and a complimentary Audi R8 driving experience.

That aside, there are few cars that pack quite such a performance punch into such an exquisite package and, coupled with the purity of the glorious naturally aspirated 5.2-litre engine, few keen drivers will be left anything other than overjoyed by the experience. Steering is a little on the light side, which makes driving it near the limit a lesson in trust, but it doesn't take long to gel with the car - you'll never have to worry about finding the limit on the road, there's that much grip.

with a lot of expendable income who want a weekend performance car that doesn't scream 'look at me'. OK, so people will look at you, but the R8's relatively understated styling makes it a less shouty option than others.

SPACE AND PRACTICALITY: Supercars aren't known for being spacious and practical, and so the R8 Spyder struggles here. The aforementioned driving position makes it less comfortable for tall folk, particularly on long-haul trips, and the low-slung seats require learning an undignified slide and drop on entry. With the engine located in the middle of the chassis and behind the driver, the only place to put luggage is in the front trunk. It'll easily hold a small weekend bag, but you might struggle to squeeze a family's weekly shop inside. As far as family appeal goes, the kids will love it for the occasional outing, but with only two seats and limited luggage space it won't replace the family hatchback...

BEHIND THE WHEEL: Once you're behind the wheel and assuming you can fit - you start to forget about any impracticalities. Thumb the big, red wheel-mounted starter button and the motor stutters for a moment before unleashing the sound of 10 glorious cylinders on your eardrums. It'll stir something deep within even those who claim not to care about such things.

WHO WOULD BUY ONE?: This car is ideal for those

While those who buy the coupe could just about use it every day with a little compromise, the R8 Spyder's more cramped interior makes it more of a weekend special. For people who just want to enjoy the performance and aural pleasure of a V10 screaming towards the redline, the Spyder should win out over the coupe.

VERDICT: The Audi R8 Spyder is not a sensible purchase. It's something that can only be justified by how it makes you feel in your heart, and for car enthusiasts that stunning, naturally aspirated V10 engine alone is worth the price of admission. Add sublime build quality and ludicrous performance there's not much to complain about. To really make the most of this car you might need to add the price of another family hatchback in options, but for those at this end of the market that's to be expected. Is it better than the coupe? If you're tall or want to enjoy your purchase out on track, probably not. But for those who want to cruise the open road, enjoying the sunshine and the sonorous soundtrack, the Spyder can't be beaten.

Out on the road, the R8 Spyder is something of a battering ram, offering searing performance whenever you stamp the throttle. Even with the gearbox in full auto mode, there's only a moment's hesitation as the S tronic system dives down the cogs before dumping all 532bhp and 540Nm of torque through the all-wheeldrive system and pinning you to the seat. That pinprick on the horizon will scream past the window alarmingly quickly. The light steering and wide stance make it a less-than-ideal companion for a back-road blast but, particularly with the optional Sport exhaust, it can still be fun at sane speeds. Its party piece is how docile and easy to drive it can be when you're not stamping on the loud pedal at every opportunity. Use the Drive Select toggle to put the car in comfort mode and you'll cruise about unassumingly. Parking can be tricky, again because of just how wide this thing is - it'll barely fit in most bays width-wise - but thanks to a reversing camera and parking sensors the job is made a little less stressful.

VALUE FOR MONEY: It's hard to talk about something that costs a six-figure sum being value for money, but when you look at the build quality, performance and desirability in comparison with its rivals, it does seem like something of a steal. The starting price is less expensive than a Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and much more exciting to look at, too. It's considerably more expensive than a Jaguar F-Type SVR and marginally more than a Maserati GranCabrio, but feels better put together than both.

WINE

Christmas Crackers by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant

As Christmas approaches our minds are set on what a wonderful occasion it should be. It might be a family affair or a celebration including friends, with plenty of good food, lots of presents and an assortment of drinks and … Oh! - Those awful jokes in the Christmas crackers. Well here a few amusing wine stories, which might just be funnier than those cracker jokes….

This Side Up A lady walked into a wine shop and asked the assistant if he could help her find a particular red wine that she had purchased there some weeks ago. The customer said that she did not remember the full name of the wine but that it was definitely French and had the word “Cote” written on the box. The sales assistant suggested a few names from the range of French wines that they stocked in the shop – Cotes du Rhone, Cotes de Castillon, Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune, Cote Rotie … but the customer said “No, no! None of those!”. Quite agitated now, the lady started to look in the French wine section of the shop, tutting to herself. Suddenly she called the sales assistant over and pointed to a box, sighed and said, “This must be the one”. The carton she pointed to had the words “COTE A OUVRIR,” printed on the top. “Yes madam, about half of our French wines will say that on the box, it means – OPEN THIS SIDE!”

It’s Good To Share A woman and a man were involved in a bad car accident with both cars written off but amazingly neither of them was hurt. Once they had crawled out from the wreckage of their cars the woman said “Wow, look at our cars they are totally wrecked but somehow we have both escaped unharmed; this must be sign that we should be friends and see each other more often”. The man nodded agreement and said, “Yes indeed - it must be a sign”. The woman then noticed an unbroken bottle of wine in her car and said, “This must surely be a miracle; my car is completely ruined but the bottle of wine did not even break. Surely this is a sign that we should drink the wine to celebrate our good fortune”. She handed the bottle of wine to the man and he took the top off drank half the bottle and handed it back to her. The woman took the bottle, put the cap back on and handed it back to him. “Aren’t you going have any?” asked the man. The woman replied “No thanks I think I’ll just wait for the police”.

And a few Short Ones… “I drink wine because I don’t like to keep things bottled up”. “WARNING - The consumption of wine might make you think you can sing”. “Always keep a bottle of Champagne in the fridge for special occasions – sometimes the special occasion is that you’ve got a bottle of Champagne in the fridge!”. And as it is Christmas … “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas but if the white runs out I’ll drink red” Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year! 72 | www.life-mags.com
