Ding Dong it’s Christmas – Joy to the World, I hear some of you cry, and others I hear bemoaning the festivities and its ostentatious commercialism! As for me – I am fairly middle of the road (as I am on most things) – I enjoy Christmas day with my family but like many, begrudge having to look at boxes of chocolates and mince pies from mid-October and of the school that Christmas is for December… Luckily this is our December issue and therefore rammed full of all things Christmasy… With plenty of time at home over the festivities you may enjoy our article on red wines carefully penned by the oh so knowledgeable Martin Flageul, Wine Consultant, or you may wish to share in food guru, Lorraine Pannetier’s whoops and woes of shopping from her armchair (all will be revealed on page 52). Interview this month took a community turn as I spent a morning with Tony Morling and Cathy Sara, husband and wife team heading up Wesley Grove Methodist Centre…fantastic work going on there; I urge you to read about it all on page 12. Continuing on with Community (and why wouldn’t we? – especially at this time of year) Paul Simmonds, Senior Manager of Age Concern has shared with us some insights into the valuable work undertaken by this hard working charity. As well as faith and community offerings you can also enjoy our regular features, most intertwined with a festive feel; Painted Beautiful’s home article in particular springs to mind.

DECEMBER INTERVIEW:Layout 1 02/12/2019 14:47 Page 1
INTERVIEW
Kairos in the Community …GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD! Our Christmas issue seems a fitting backdrop for community and / or faith based interviews; last year I was fortunate to spend time with Father Nick at St Luke’s Church and this year, serendipitously, I discovered the amazing community work being offered every day, at St Helier Methodist Centre…by Juanita Shield-Laignel It was by pure accident I came upon the new and improved St Helier Methodist Centre café and immediately knew it was worth sharing. What a wonderful surprise when I turned up to chat with Rev Tony, and wife Cathy, founder of Kairos Arts Jersey. Thanks to the ‘Brick Foundation’, the previously tired area where the café now lies, is bright and welcoming; the ethos being, ‘All ages, All nations, All stages of faith ’.
Lots of tables and chairs are dotted around meaning there is plenty of room for visitors to sit and chat. Tony had this to say… “The café doesn’t exclude anyone on price and people can linger - stay as long as they like. This is an open door place of friendship where we gain and learn and grow as equals, enriched and challenged by the complexities and joys of life.” “The café and community space is driven by Jesus’ words that, ‘God so loved the world’ – not he ‘so loved the church’ which means that we are called to love the world and serve the community – the café offers quality to the community as everybody should have somewhere nice to go and have good food. Jersey can be such a divided society.” Just then an older gentleman came wandering in and stopped to chat. “This is Michael,” said Tony, “he counts out tea bags to go to South Africa for our aid project. What does the café mean to you Michael?” he asked…

DECEMBER INTERVIEW:Layout 1 02/12/2019 14:47 Page 2
INTERVIEW
Immediately Michael replied “It means a lot. I enjoy coming here. Everything is a reasonable price, people are friendly and I really appreciate this café and have been coming for a while. I get involved where I can and help keep the courtyard weeded and clean and I dress up as Father Christmas.” Michael grinned and wandered off again to do his thing. “We often find that,” continued Tony, “people come along to use the facilities and love it so much, end up volunteering or becoming part of staff.” With that he invited the lady serving lunch to join us. “This is Ellen - she runs Rascals our group for pre-schools and parents.” Ellen sat and chatted a while, telling me she had indeed started coming along to the parent and children’s group as a mum as a way of socialising and soon became an invaluable part of the team. She had just that morning, baked some mince pies and was busy preparing soup and whatnot for lunch, but stopped to make me a coffee and chat. Ellen shared, “The Café is for everyone. Office workers come in during their lunch break, people have meetings here and Mums bring their children for playgroup and many of them stay and chat, and are welcome to stay as long as they like, relax and be safe. They can linger all day with just one coffee if they like. Some even bring their own packed lunch and that’s just fine. It also gives them a place where they can talk, be listened to, treated with respect and be heard.” After sharing with me that she had been working in the Centre for four years and loved every single day, Ellen returned to her important work in the kitchens. Tony, who with true inclusivity, seemed keen to introduce everyone who passed and invite them to talk a while, then introduced me to Sarah, the office administrator. “Sarah works in the office and is brilliant at keeping us all on track. We do so much here; run the Nestlings nursery, a community based food bank, youth club, children’s groups, and host Le Geyt Special Needs who use the community room during the week, dance classes, AA groups, health clinics and lots more. And of course all ages meet for worship on a Sunday at 10.30am. We try to keep worship relevant, honest, and real. We also have fun and laugh a lot! Sarah keeps everything running smoothly.” Sarah joined us and told me how much she enjoys her work at St Helier Methodist Centre. “I’ve been here six and a half years; booking rooms, administrating the food bank and various meetings – I’m the front line, the receptionist and am here all day so get to see most of what goes on including the dance group that come in later in the day.” Having important matters to attend to, Sarah excused herself… I was interested to know a little of Tony’s background. “I was born in Jersey but my parents moved to the UK when I was just 3 months old. I grew up in London and worked in the jewellery trade – I was a gemmologist (that sounded fascinating in its self)! I’ve been in ministry since 1991 and was in East London before I came to Jersey 6 years ago. There are lots of diverse needs here in the island and more poverty than is immediately obvious and a variety of other issues one wouldn’t associate with such a seemingly affluent island…looking from the outside in that is. Once you get to ground level, you realise Jersey has its challenges just like anywhere else.”
At this point Tony’s wife Cathy had joined us and was sitting quietly listening as Tony finished “We hope this is a place of openness, a place to lean into. We also provide those things that promote fairness and justice; we have advisory roles to be a voice for those not always heard, we are agitators for beneficial change. We are committed to working in partnership with many agencies because we know together we are stronger than when we try to do things on our own. In Zechariah there is a verse talking about future hope which says, “Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each of them with cane in hand because of their age. The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.” That’s the kind of community we want to work towards for all of Jersey’s residents – where children of many nations can flourish and feel free whilst the adults chat, laugh and belong. God’s grace and kindness are behind it all and we are passionate about the God we discover in Jesus.” With that Tony introduced me to Kay, one of 6 church stewards and to Cathy and left us to chat as he had to go and lead a prayer group. Kay shared with me her love of working at the Centre and that her steward duties are shared so she works every other Sunday... Kay also had other chores to attend to so also wandered off to do her own thing. Cathy on the other hand had come specifically to tell me about an truly amazing charitable initiative she has brought to Jersey… Cathy began “Kairos is my heart beat and we have a new training programme starting in January.” continues overleaf...

DECEMBER INTERVIEW:Layout 1 02/12/2019 14:47 Page 3
INTERVIEW
Of course I wanted to know what ‘Kairos’ meant before we went any further. “Ahh, good question,” was Cathy’s retort…“Kairos is a Greek word. In English we have only one word for time, the Greek equivalent being ‘Chronos’ i.e. measurable time; it is 11 .21am – it’s time for coffee. ‘Kairos’ on the other hand is a ‘significant moment in time’ – a transformative moment, a time when something changes, a lightbulb moment. So when Tony asked me to marry him it was a life changing wonderful moment, a Kairos moment. The bible is full of Kairos moments, so when Jesus said his ‘time had come’ he wasn’t talking about it being 11:45. He was meaning time of opportunity, to seize the moment. For us as an organisation, this is a Kairos moment as we have just become an independent charity. So our workshops are about transforming lives, changing lives – we say ‘one workshop at a time’.” I asked Cathy to go back to the beginning and tell me all about the charity, its history and what it provides for the community. “As an actor with a passion for the creative arts, I started working with the charity in London during 2011. Originally it was called Talitha taken from an Aramaic saying from the bible ‘Talitha koumi’- ‘Rise up little girl’! A friend of mine had started it to help people make discoveries by using creativity. So she invited art therapists, drama and music professionals, artists and other therapist to work with traumatised girls and then by invitation from the International Justice Mission, she started working with girls who had been trafficked in India. Wherever there is poverty, there is injustice. Many girls have been rescued physically and go into rescue homes, but they are broken and highly traumatised.
How do they process that? There is cognitive behavioural therapy, but we were trying to open up the tool kit with a long term strategy that opens, unlocks and frees people to move on.” “Using creativity helps traumatised people find out about themselves. During the work in India we began to think about how this could help vulnerable people back in the UK so began to explore working with Women’s Refuge using music, dance, drama, art and sensory play – all creative and person centred, giving value and dignity to people. We found this also helps with dementia, where the person is locked inside, using music and so on is making such a difference.” “We recently had experience of this in a workshop when a lady from the Jersey Women’s Refuge stuck her hand up in the air and shouted ‘I am having a Kairos moment!’ She was holding a beautiful pure white water lily she’d made from white clay. We’d asked the ladies to make something in which they would put all their precious things in life. From the sludge and the mud, something beautiful and symbolic had happened. But it actually didn’t matter what it looked like – it’s about the process not what you make.” “Karl Jung said ‘Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect can’t’ – and that is so true, creativity just moves something. I’d always known it had a much wider implication everyone knows that mental health is helped by the arts, this approach helps in so many settings so we are systematically training Kairos Therapists because the possibilities are endless.” “Work here is growing exponentially and we can’t fulfil everything at the moment. Luckily we have just got a grant for the first time. Now we are a registered charity the Lloyds Bank Foundation is paying for 20 hours of work per week for a year, meaning I have been able to invite a lady called Wendy to work with me. I have been doing this for 8 years for free but I can’t expect someone else to do that. Currently we have about 10 practitioners trained and are running a programme to raise awareness and also running community fund raising events and I’ve been able to bring actors over to do shows to raise money and awareness.” Cathy then proceeded to show me around the St Helier Methodist Centre and talked a little more about their plans for the future but the core message was all about service to the community at large…an ethos I am whole heartedly happy to support. Thank you Tony and Cathy and the dedicated team at St Helier Methodist Centre – I look forward to keeping up to date with your invaluable work.

AGE CONCERN JERSEY was founded almost 30 years ago, initially to offer advice and information to the older people of Jersey. In 1994, a headquarters at Windsor House in Val Plaisant was established and over the years many other services and activities have been added to include daily lunches, shop, hairdressing, chiropody, arts and crafts and a range of other activities to stimulate the mind and body of the older community. With the growth of services and the increase in Members, unfortunately their home is longer fit for purpose, so they are in the process of launching a major fundraising campaign in order to move to a purpose-built home, providing Jersey with a major resource to help combat loneliness in an ageing population, their new home will be sited opposite their current premises in Val Plaisant, with a view to opening at the end of 2021. The new Centre will occupy the ground floor of a new-build housing project by States-backed Andium Homes. Ground works are currently being completed on the on the site of the low-rise section of Plaisant (formerly Convent) Court. The new HQ will cover around 5,000 sq. Ft, doubling the lunchtime capacity, along with a seated al fresco area for dining and outside activities. There will also be a large function room, as well as a range of activity rooms to suit all interests. Age Concern Jersey will continue to offer its free Islandwide minibus service for Members, as well as its popular frozen meals services for those at home. A key issue for many older people is social isolation, Age Concern Jersey is open from 9:00am – 5:00pm weekdays for anyone over 55 to just drop in and take part in a wide range of activities or for just a cup of tea and a nice chat.

3 THEMES TO GIVE YOUR TREE A SERIOUS STYLE UPGRADE THIS
Christmas Don't get your tinsel in a twist! Gabrielle Fagan reveals this year's top-of-the-tree trends... The tree is often a focal point for the festivities - but with a blizzard of different themes to choose from every year, it's easy to get baffled by baubles and in a tangle over tinsel. We've chosen three styles, which are not only easy to put together but look stunning, and will guarantee you get a gold star for your top-of-the-tree taste...

TREE THEMES:Layout 1 01/12/2019 16:35 Page 2
1. SET A SNOWY SCENE Don't just dream of a white Christmas - create one indoors, with a sparkling, frosted theme. "This theme is inspired by the memory of the first dusting of snow transforming the surrounding landscape into a stunning scenery," explains John Lewis Christmas buyer, Dan Cooper. "Crunchy snow, icicles and smiles from building snowmen are reflected in the mood, textures and colours. "It has an element of playfulness from childhood memories, combined with the serenity that a snowy landscape presents," he adds. For an equally calm and serene look, pick up on soft metallics - rose gold, bronze, and pretty crystals - part of the John Lewis' Sanctuary baubles collection. TREE TIP: Enhance a forest effect with a collection of branches from the garden, sprayed silver or white and arranged on a mantel or in a vase. A wreath, pine or eucalyptus could be a beautiful finishing touch, and the scent will infuse your room. Go on the trail of wicked woodland tree treats.
2. KEEP IT TRADITIONAL Nothing says Christmas like a classic red and white theme - red stripes, bright lights and a maximal feel. "We love our red and white theme inspired by Santa's workshop, which focuses on the joy and magic of the festive season," says Lynsey Abbott, Christmas expert, Dobbies Garden Centres. "Fun and playful traditional Christmas characters, striped candy canes and cheeky elves abound. For a hint of luxe, simply add some gold or silver baubles." TREE TIP: Layer garlands and lights in between standout baubles to give added depth to a tree. Co-ordinate your gift-wrapping under the tree to compliment the look. If a more rustic look appeals, add more deep green baubles and simple wooden decorations. Bring on rich red baubles and 'berry' beautiful details

3. ROCK A RAINBOW VIBE Go all out with neon shades and funky decorations for the boldest look of the season. "Bursting with colour and character, this look will attract compliments for its exuberance," says Sam Hood, co-founder and creative director, Amara. "When it comes to decorating with vibrant colours and designs, it's important to establish a theme. If you want to go all out with this playful trend, then variety is key - don't go too matchy-matchy, as surprise and individuality is a key element of its charm," she adds. "I'd select a handful of bold statement decorations for a focal point and build around those." TREE TIP: Ignore the 'less is more' rule and pile on the decorations - the more unusual the better - in a kaleidoscope of colours. Tinsel, once so naff, is now back in vogue and makes the perfect retro finishing touch for an Eighties disco theme. Keep it kitsch and quirky for a festive remix.

Burning Love WHY ARE ROARING WOOD FIRES SO ENDLESSLY APPEALING?
Vincent Thurkettle, author of The Wood Fire Handbook, talks to Luke Rix-Standing about one of our best-loved simple pleasures - the log fire... Anyone that's stomped into a country pub on a cold winter's day will understand the distinctive delights of a roaring fire. But how realistic are they for most homes? And what about eco concerns, not to mention safety? We spoke to Vincent Thurkettle, author of The Wood Fire Handbook, now in its second edition, about the comfort, care and controversy surrounding the modern wood fire... AN ANCIENT AFFINITY For many, a wood fire isn't just a household amenity, it's a way of life. "I don't have a cat or a dog," says Thurkettle, "but I do have a wood fire. I sit beside it, feed it and clean up after it, and I can't leave it alone for too long."
with it warmth, food and company. I've never known someone to get the same feeling by snuggling up with their radiator." Despite our obvious kinship with fire, Thurkettle is often surprised by how little many of us know about one of man's earliest discoveries. He recalls one woman requesting his help lighting a pile of absolutely sodden green oak ("you couldn't set fire to that with napalm"), and a neighbour asking how much coal his wood fire needed. A BUYER'S GUIDE The first rule of fire club, according to Thurkettle, is to pick up a modern, wood-burning stove. "An open fire is roughly 13-15% efficient," he says, "as it's throwing several cubic feet a second up the chimney.
For Thurkettle, the love affair is borderline instinctive. "Wood fires are the thoroughbred," he says, "we had them before we were even human and I sometimes wonder whether they're in our DNA. The earliest fires that we know about are almost a million years old, and there's something atavistic about how much we like them. "Even until fairly recently if you were cold, wet and hungry, the smell of wood smoke meant you were getting near home, and

Modern wood burners operate at 70-85%, so you're getting at least four times the heat for the logs that you burn." Most modern stoves, unlike older models, have what is called 'secondary air' - pre-heated air sustaining flames above the main fire, which burn off much of the smoke emitted by your logs. Otherwise, individual units are mostly distinguished by size, and the heft that you need depends on the space you need to heat. "Heating engineers might throw stones at me for this," says Thurkettle, "but I always buy something slightly bigger than the numbers say - then you can open the door and let the heat permeate through the house. "I've got a cousin who had an engineer install a tiny stove in her house, and now she can't get logs small enough. It's got such a small fire box that it needs constant feeding, so she's always having to cut wood in half." Finally, selecting your stove is not the right moment to be miserly. "Don't buy cheap," says Thurkettle. "If you purchase a good one, it should last more or less the rest of your life." TENDER BURNING CARE It's the raw materials that will decide whether you sputter or spark. "In a stove, the species of wood doesn't really matter," says Thurkettle. "But make sure it's dry, and that means a moisture content of 20% or less." If you have room for storage, Thurkettle suggests some DIY. "You can get wood straight from a woodsman or firewood supplier and buy a moisture meter - they're dead simple and really cheap. Just jab it into the log and look at the reading."
Step one is an efficient, modern wood-burner; step two is to burn clean, dry timber; step three is all about technique. "There was research recently," says Thurkettle, "that found that almost all the smoke produced by wood fires was produced in the first 20-30 minutes. If people stick to good fire-lighting practice, and follow these principles, we'll have good, efficient, moral fires. "Clean air is important - of course it is - but we mustn't take the joy away. It's such a wonderful way to heat your home."
SNUG BUT SAFE There are some specific rules to follow to ensure you're only burning what you intend to - and always putting safety first. "Overnight burn at your peril," says Thurkettle. "Some people take pride in keeping their fires on overnight, but they do so by restricting airflow, limiting the burn off of tar, creosote, and so on." Over a period of time this can result in stalactites of tar, and something called an explosive chimney fire. You really don't want that. Even the most responsibly fuelled flue needs the odd deep clean, and the usual rule is to have your chimney swept once a year. Be aware that there are strict regulations on how close fires can be to flammable materials, and ensure that rooms with wood stoves are always fitted with carbon monoxide detectors. "Never in my life have they gone off," says Thurkettle, "but it's good practice to have one." ECO-FRIENDLY FLAMES There's no doubting its hygge-tastic homeliness, but woodburning has been a little bit under fire in recent years. Wood is one of the ultimate renewables and is not a fossil fuel, but it also produces pollutants, mostly particulates. "It's so topical and rightly so - nobody wants smoky old buses and lorries on the road, and nobody wants smoky old fires in our cities."

FESTIVE If your home's still a festive-free zone, or despite your best efforts, still hasn't got top-of-the-tree style, there's no need to panic. A beautifully decorated home is within reach; all that's needed is a little imagination, a willingness to get handy with some scissors, glue and paper, and a small outlay on a few well-chosen Christmas accessories. By Gabrielle Fagan. "We're all so busy at this time of year that decorations can be left to the last minute, or maybe have to be kept to the minimum if you're on a tight budget," says Anita Kaushal, interiors specialist and co-author of FamilyLifeStyle Home. "Luckily, 'less is more' is the recipe for seasonal success, because it's about making beautiful but simple statements. That can be a traditional tree hung with home-made, hand-painted baubles, or simply windows made seasonal with baubles hung on cord, or strings of paper decorations made by the children. Those personal touches won't just add colour and character, they'll make your festive setting unique." Follow our guide to stunning last-minute touches for Santa-ready rooms... continues overleaf...

BRANCH OUT
HANG 'EM HIGH
If you haven't the space for a large, bushy tree, or don't want to make that sort of statement, embrace the trend for slimmeddown 'size zero' trees, with slender trunks and bare branches.
Set baubles free from the tree and you'll be amazed at their power to bring razzle-dazzle to rooms.
"There are a lot of naked trees around this year," says TV presenter and crafts queen Kirstie Allsopp. "It's definitely a trend, and is for those who are confident in their taste and like something alternative and design-led.
"Buy invisible wire thread, or fishing line, and attach to a window frame so you can hang baubles from it. Or use brightly coloured satin and velvet ribbon, cut to different lengths, and hang them from chandeliers and curtain rails," says Kaushal. "Be generous for maximum impact and keep to a colour theme ideally using two bright colours and then contrasting with black or fashionable metallics, such as gold and copper. A tinsel or ribbon bow at each end of a strand adds a luxury touch."
"If you've having a minimalist twig thing, then you put very small, very delicate decorations on it. One of the reasons Scandinavian decorations look so beautiful is because they're so understated, and those Scandi trees do work well with just a few decorations."
ONWARDS & UPWARDS Ensure visitors' first impression is a festive one by dressing the stairs with a garland on a banister rail, or hang cards on a string down its length. "Equally decorative are tiny gift-wrapped boxes suspended on silk ribbon, and for extra sparkle, spray with glitter paint. continues overleaf...

Then intersperse with Christmas cards, clipped with pegs, or get children to write their own festive messages, using glitter pens on plain gift tags or luggage labels, for a charming touch," says Kaushal. "For a different interpretation, and if the tread of the stair is wide enough, have a garland securely anchored on to the wall side of the stairs, and intersperse with battery-operated candles or tea lights." WONDERLAND WALLS Bring seasonal magic to plain walls with festive images which will instantly conjure a winter wonderland. "Christmas is a time to have fun with decor and play around with colours and effects which you wouldn't dare to try at any other time of the year," says Kauchal. "If you don't like cards cluttering surfaces, simply cut out a large paper template of a Christmas tree and then mark out the outline on a wall. Stick cards inside it to match its shape for a colourful feature. Alternatively, use lengths of ribbon to delineate a tree outline, and pop a star on the top for a 3D effect."
PAPER PLAYTIME Making decorations is one of the traditional rituals of Christmas, and with the current revival for all things craft, they're an essential home-made touch. "One of the most effective ways to make paper decorations is by using paper from old books, comics or magazines, which will instantly give character and intriguing interest," suggests Kaushal. "Daisy chains made from old newspaper, sheet music, tissue paper or even tin foil also look pretty. The best thing about the foil version is there's no need for glue, as the foil links can simply be twisted to close, making a chain simple and quick to do. "You can give paper snowflakes or any decorations a little more 'wow' factor by dipping the tips in water colours or sprinkling them with glitter before cutting to size."

Before decorating and dressing your home for the festive season, the preparation can be cathartic; it’s a healthy opportunity to organise, make space and create storage. It can also be a sentimental time when you are reminded of all the festive times and treasures, the latter that were packed away from the previous year, whether it’s children’s homemade gifts, inherited decorations, or just reminders of other times. Savour this time as much as when you are sourcing items and decorating your home. There is undoubtably a huge amount of decorations and home accessories to create the ambience. Remembering also, what you already have is a lovely starting point to build your scheme around, whether that be the decorative items themselves or the props such as jars, bowls and so forth that can be used for staging your scheme.

Winter, Yuletide and Christmas have merged in terms on decorating concepts, which means that we have a wonderful source book for seasonal inspirations. Winter brings us the joy of a cosy ambience, and this does not need to be reserved for inside the home. We love the idea of having a winter inspired outside space too, just like inside the

home, with a fire, candles, seating and a prepared basket of throws and sheepskins would provide an atmospheric spot to relax, entertain and enjoy your winter drinks. For the inside if you have fireplace, enhance the focal point feature, stack logs and source items to create scent for any fires, we are in the midst of preparing scented fire starters with cinnamon, orange and pine. Yuletide is beautifully evocative, it’s those key symbols that we incorporate into our schemes; yule logs, candles, holly, ivy, mistletoe and evergreens. Some of these allow us to forage, and we love to add the natural items, such as those mentioned, as well as others, pinecones, small pine branches, and depending on the scheme can be easily sprayed, made into wreaths, garlands and table/any surface decorations and additional colour in candle votives. Candles are a very important feature, as they are so versatile from function to decorative and room scenting. A table can be dressed with a candle in a beautiful votive with greenery for a simple scheme, it can be part of more elaborate dressing where they create varying heights or placed in front of a mirror, or one a mirrored tray, which will allow for the light to reflect into the room. The possibilities are vast and, naturally, the candle holders, in all likelihood, will be sustainable. No room in the house needs to be out of the reach of being decorated but if you prefer to focus of the key areas of your home, do not forget the hallway, if you have a wreath on your door make that the start of your entrance decorations. A console table or bench with candles, lighting and other decorative items is a lovely way to set the scene for guests to your home, and should also provide you with an evocative sense of home as you return and close the door behind you during the, often, hectic season. If you do like to add some element of the season to your bedroom, for example, items such as stars, garlands, a table top miniature tree with a small selection of tree decorations, cosy throws and cushions are all ways to extend the decorations through the home. Christmas colour and co-ordination. We have previously been guilty of being the strongest of advocates of a completely coordinated colour scheme with symmetrically placed tree decorations. This year is time to be brave and stylishly mix it up, although there is an item that will never feature, the T word decoration! Colour can bring such joy and if you love the decorations use them. We believe balance is the key, have the brightly coloured vintage inspired tree decorations and glittery baubles but then provide a contrast with a pared down wooden or foraged item, and with the help of the cavern of inspiration that is Pinterest, you could create an eclectic look by adding some homemade decorations.
Should bursts of colour fill you with dread, the Scandi vibe is a truly beautiful and calming scheme, with natural wood, layering, muted colours, simple garlands, subtle lights and candle holders, beautiful Tomte/Nisse/Tonttu inspired figure (the Scandinavian folklore decorations) and cement decorations. After all a number of our festive traditions were brought down from our Northern Europe, such as bringing greenery indoors in the middle of winter, we should honour this! Wishing you a very happy and healthy festive season from Painted Beautiful. HOW TO STYLE YOUR
YULETIDE MANTELPIECE the natural way
Bring that Christmas cheer indoors with these mantelpiece makeovers, using garlands, candle circles and stand-alone showstoppers... So, you've made your Christmas wreath, your outdoor lights are glowing and the mistletoe's hanging above the door - but how else can you add festive sparkle to the scene? It's easy to pimp your mantelpiece with flora and fauna, from the most elaborate adornments to a few sprigs here and there. Here are just a few ideas to add sparkle to the scene... GO FOR NATURAL GLAMOUR You just need some dried foliage such as silver eucalyptus leaves, dried larkspur and corn, dried roses and Spanish moss to make this showstopping mantelpiece decoration, which would ideally sit on one side of the shelf. Claire Bishop, of Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com) says if you're using foliage from the garden, you leave it overnight in a warm room to allow it to dry out. If you are using cut flowers, these will take a little more time to dry. Adding air plants such as tillandsia, which you can buy in all sorts of shapes, sizes and textures, will be ideal, she suggests.

"It's super easy to throw together into a vase. For an extra secure display you can use chicken wire to hold in place," says Bishop. Place taller stems in first and then layer, placing medium length stems in next, followed by shorter sprigs at the front. Other mantelpiece decorations can be used to weigh down and hold the floral arrangement securely in place." Try not to put the decoration too close to candles if you are going to light them. Alternatively, invest in some battery-operated candles if you want to put a little light near the greenery. JOIN THE IVY LEAGUE Ivy is such a versatile plant. While in the garden it can be a thug, at Christmas it comes into its own and you just need a handful of long stems to create an authentic look, whether draped over the side of the mantelpiece or woven in and out of ornaments and candles. If you want a bit of sparkle, attach baubles to the spray with florist's wire, or alternatively just place pine cones along the strands for a more natural effect.
ENJOY CANDLELIT COSINESS Place candles together on either end of the mantelpiece and create circles of foliage around them, whether with offcuts from your Christmas tree or sprigs of holly and berries from the garden. You can create mini wreaths out of sturdy garden wire, making them big enough so your candle can sit inside the circle, and rest them on clear glass candle stands. Again, it may be safer to use artificial candles which are batterylit, especially if you are prone to forgetting to blow them out at the end of a busy festive day. continues overleaf...

GO FOR GARLAND GREENERY Make a real statement with one long garland using offcuts from your Christmas tree, and venture into the garden to forage evergreen foliage such as yew, bay and ivy, along with hips and berries from hypericum and pyracantha.
42 | www.life-mags.com
Use of length of rope as the base on which to tie the foliage if you want to drape the garland more elaborately, using mantle clips attached to the mantelpiece. Add scent using long sprigs of evergreen rosemary and lavender. If you want more colour you can always attach baubles or spray pine cones with white, silver or gold spray to add a festive feel. Just use the colour which works best with your home decor.

HERE'S HOW TO FIND A
Christmas Tree YOU CAN REPLANT INSTEAD OF THROWING IT AWAY Hannah Stephenson looks at container-grown Christmas trees and other alternatives which will thrive in your garden after the festive season is over...
Discarding a Christmas tree once the festivities are over always feels so wrong and wasteful - but it doesn't have to be this way. If you want a more sustainable tree this year, you can opt for a container-grown variety which can be replanted after the baubles come down. Pot-grown trees tend to be a bit more expensive and a little smaller, but you can grow them on in the garden or at least repot them so you can use them again next year. "We need to double UK tree cover to help the fight against climate breakdown, and your Christmas tree can be part of this," says Emi Murphy, campaigner at Friends of the Earth. "You can take the easy route and just buy a cut tree that you know will be taken off your hands and disposed of, hopefully chipped or made use of by someone else, but it is symptomatic of our throwaway culture, particularly around Christmas time," adds Friends of the Earth nature campaigner Paul de Zylva. Ready to give it a go? Here is everything you need to know about buying a living Christmas tree. WHERE CAN YOU BUY A POTTED CHRISTMAS TREE? Many garden centres offer container-grown versions of the most popular Christmas trees - Nordmann firs, along with blue spruce, pine and other varieties. For a change, you could even just use a potted shrub or miniature conifer indoors which you can plant outside after Christmas. 46 | www.life-mags.com

DEALERS IN FINE ANTIQUES, WORKS OF ART, JEWELLERY AND OBJECTS
GOLD IS AT A RECORD HIGH If you have gold jewellery you never wear then cash it in and buy something you will. We buy all gold jewellery, new, old, broken, it doesn’t matter.
"A potted tree with roots lets you grow it outside and use it again, reducing its environmental impact and costing you less. A living tree will also carry on absorbing carbon from the atmosphere for years to come," says Murphy. Container-grown trees have been grown for at least one season in their pots and it's often possible to lift the whole root system out of the pot and see the closely woven root which has grown in the pot, according to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association. WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR? The trees will be small, seldom more than 3ft, and should look fresh, the BCTGA advises. They should be watered and cared for as for any houseplant so kept moist (but not waterlogged) and away from radiators. After Christmas they can either be planted out with a very good chance of success, or they can be left to grow on in their pot, continues overleaf...

It can flourish either outside or inside throughout the summer months, but it's not frost-hardy so will need taking in during the cooler seasons and treated as a houseplant. During new growth, it will offer a light green colour and then deepen to a darker green in winter. ARE THERE OTHER NON-TRADITIONAL OPTIONS? Friends of the Earth suggests these other plants you could use instead of traditional trees which can be planted out or remain in their pots outside after Christmas. Holly Deemed by some to be the original Christmas tree, holly is evergreen so will be colourful even in December. Be careful of the spiky leaves though - if you're worried about children or pets you could take some cuttings to use as decorations instead of moving the whole tree indoors. Bay tree If you're creative, these evergreen shrubs can be clipped into stunning formal shapes and look fabulous framing front doors. You can also use the leaves (fresh or dried) in cooking. Yucca You may already have a yucca indoors and if you do, why not decorate it for Christmas? Large indoor plants like yucca trees look great with Christmas decorations on them. WHAT ABOUT ARTIFICIAL TREES?
but it is much better in this case to re-pot the tree into a larger pot. The size of the tree will be restricted by the size of the container you re-plant it into. WHAT TYPES OF POTTED TREE CAN YOU BUY? Nordmann fir Pot-grown blue spruce and Nordmann fir are widely available from good garden centres. Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com) reckons the distinctive silvery-blue foliage makes blue spruce a stylish choice either on the doorstep or indoors for the festive season. Their pot-grown trees are grown from hand-raised seedlings transplanted into growing pots plunged in the open field. Each pot is dotted with tiny holes which allow the finer tree roots to find nutrients from the surrounding soils, while keeping the main root system protected and intact within. Nordmann fir can also be bought as a potted plant with excellent needle retention, a symmetrical appearance and strong, bushy branches and is ideal for those who want to put their trees up early. Norfolk Island pine The Norfolk Island pine looks like a mini Christmas tree and can be decorated accordingly, and also acts as a perfect foil for smaller, colourful houseplants such as Christmas cacti.
48 | www.life-mags.com
Paul de Zylva says: "If you've got a fake tree already, keep using it - make it last as long as possible. But look into a more environmentally-sound option when it eventually comes to replacing it."

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Should we maintain our healthy lifestyle over Christmas or should we take a break and let it all go over the festive season?
Mark Shields Explains... Christmas tends to be a time of pure self-indulgence and most of us justify our actions by celebrating it to the max. After all Christmas comes but once a year, however, healthy eating should be a lifestyle choice for life. Sounds boring already… I hear you cry. It is important to accept that you may slide a little over Christmas and New Year but come 1st January you have the chance to get back on track and start a fresh for the New Year ahead. Don’t beat yourself up about the past and draw a line under it and move on. During the festive season there will be many occasions from family gatherings to office parties which will divert your attention from “being good”. Unfortunately, eating with friends can tempt us to overeat and drink. Meals with multiple courses eaten over longer periods and with alcohol are all associated with overindulgence. Endless canapé trays at the office party are also laden with foods containing high saturated fat. Eating out usually means that we have little control over how the food is prepared or how large the portion is. Also, foods eaten out tend to be higher in fat and research has shown that those who eat out regularly generally have higher intakes of fat, salt and calories. As you have no point of nutritional reference with foods bought from cafes and restaurants there is no way of knowing exactly what is contained in that food and opting for the healthiest option might not always be obvious, or easy. However, with some knowledge and thought, eating out can be enjoyable and healthy!
THE TEN STEPS TO ENJOYING THE FESTIVE SEASON WITHOUT BLOWING THE WHOLE DIET: 1. If you are going out to a drinks or cocktail party, eat something substantial and healthy before you go, this will reduce the chance of gorging on canapés or finger food at the party. 2. Always ask the waitress if you do not know what is in the food being served. If they don’t know the chef certainly will. 50 | www.life-mags.com
3. Don’t be polite when it comes to pudding. Opt for a hot mint tea to be sociable but not calorific. Or, if on the menu a small fruit sorbet or fruit dish. Avoid dairy based desserts that contain fat. 4. Think about sharing a course with a companion if the portions look large. 5. Don’t be afraid to be high maintenance like Meg Ryan in “When Harry met Sally”. Losing weight can be high maintenance to start with whilst you are getting your bearings so by asking your waitress to hold the mayonnaise or put the dressing on the side is perfectly acceptable and an easy way to remove these fat laden additions from your healthy salad. 6. Opt for dishes which are grilled, baked, steamed, poached or cooked in own juice rather than fried. 7. Order sides of vegetables or green salad to fill up on rather than chips. 8. If you are drinking alcohol, try opting for spritzers instead or alternating between sparkling water and wine. It will reduce your calorie intake, as let’s face it alcohol is “liquid sugar”. It will also reduce the effects of the hangover the next morning. 9. Another note on alcohol which is important to remember, it can remove your inhibitions, now whilst dancing naked on tables is a great form of exercise, throwing away any best laid plans for healthy eating is not so sensible. 10.Party your socks off on the dance floor! You can burn up to 500 calories in one night. There is nothing like a good boogie to put you in a good mood so get up on the floor and funk it! So there you have it, a quick ten step guide to surviving a healthy festive season. In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas from all of us at the Life Practice clinics. RECIPE
Christmas - why you don’t have to do it alone ‘Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation and creativity’ - Brené Brown During the last two months I’ve had to do something difficult that pushed me beyond my comfort zone - and it all started with a slow motion slip on a wet pavement and a snap of my fibula! I managed to break my ankle while on a short break to Leeds, getting my daughter settled in to university. What followed was a beautiful lesson in kindness, compassion and vulnerability. Having a broken bone - particularly one that forced me to spend most of my time on the sofa with my foot elevated - meant that I had no choice but to ask for help. I needed lifts to hospital appointments, food to eat, someone to cook (and not spill water on the floor - crutches and water don’t mix!) and someone to clean the house. As a single parent with no family on the island and my eldest daughter (and driver) at university, it was time to pick up the phone and get vulnerable. Of course, once you ask, most people are only too willing to help - just as you’d probably go out of your way to help a friend in need. And when you make the effort to find out, there are public and private services that are specifically designed to support you through challenging times. Being the passionate home cook that I am, not being able to shop or prepare food for a few weeks was a struggle. But soon I found innovative ways to create my daily smoothie while balancing on one leg, flamingo style, and how to navigate carrying a jacket potato with baked beans into the lounge in a plastic container in a carrier bag hooked on a crutch! (True story) Those cheap, fast fashion leggings bought especially to be cut around my cast were stretchy enough around the waistband to transport snacks and hot drinks from the kitchen to the sofa. I giggled to myself numerous times at how funny I must have looked! But a girl’s gotta eat…. And that’s where Lucas Farm Shop home delivery service was a life saver! I placed my order online in the evening and received boxes of packaging-free vegetables and fruit the next morning. Bliss! As someone who loves the physical act of food shopping, I thought I’d miss the experience. But instead I was given the opportunity to see that it was a strategic use of my time. 52 | www.life-mags.com
One email to the farm shop was quicker and cheaper than taking my car out a few times a week. Plus, a food delivery service means you only buy what you really need, not all the tempting extras that might find their way into your basket. Win-win for your budget and your waistline! Another addition to my life during this period was a cleaner. I knew it was essential as I was physically unable to do more than a quick wipe down of the kitchen surfaces and it wasn’t fair on my 16 year old to suddenly take on all the cleaning chores. Having a cleaner for two hours a week gave me so much more than a clean house. It lifted my mood, freed up time to do online activities for my business (like blogging and Instagram) and showed me that paying someone to support me was a solid investment. I used to think that having a cleaner meant I was a ‘failure’ at keeping the house clean and tidy. Or that having someone deliver food meant I was being lazy. Having the time and space to reflect on my beliefs gave me a clearer view of my goals. I realised that while I’d been holding back on investing in support, I’d made myself a martyr. I was trying to do all the things and in doing so, not getting where I wanted to be. So, while it’s easy to see an injury or health challenge as a setback, I believe this provides an opportunity for personal growth and change. We can be so wrapped up in everyday ‘stuff’ that our own impatience and ego prevents us from living the life we really want. As we head into one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year, I want to share one very important lesson: You do not have to do this alone. Ask for support, delegate Christmas tasks and spend more time with the ones you love. And if this experience has taught me one more thing, it’s that often people struggle in silence. If you’re the Christmas party host and a guest asks if he/she can do anything to help, say yes! They’ll be only too happy to bring you those parsnips you forgot to buy or the eggs for your Yorkshire puddings….

RECIPE
CHRISTMAS STIR FRY - SIDE DISH OR PLANT-BASED MAIN COURSE Christmas is the perfect opportunity to have a variety of dishes that guests can mix and match to create their ideal combination. This stir fry can be used as a side dish alongside your meat and roast potatoes, or it can be a wholesome plant-based main dish with the addition of some rice or roasted vegetables. Ingredients: (Use seasonal, local ingredients as much as possible.) Curly kale Sprouts Red onion Cranberries (fresh or frozen) Chestnuts (canned) Pecans or pine nuts Nutmeg (whole) Chilli flakes Method: Quarter the sprouts, dice the onion, wash and tear the kale and drain the chestnuts. In a large wok or heavy based pan, soften the onion for 2-3 minutes in a little oil. Add the sprouts, chestnuts and cranberries and season with sea salt and black pepper.
Add the kale and some grated nutmeg and a sprinkle of chilli flakes (leave out the chilli if you’re not a fan of spicy flavours). Cook for 3-4 minutes until the sprouts have softened and the kale has cooked down. Serve immediately. Optional: To turn into a main vegan meal, add a pre-cooked grain such as brown rice or quinoa and chunks of roasted vegetables - squash or sweet potato work well and add a splash of colour. You could also add marinated tofu, extra nuts or a sprinkle of hemp seeds or toasted pumpkin seeds. The possibilities are endless!
DECEMBER WINE 2019:Layout 1 01/12/2019 16:49 Page 1
WINE
Red Wines by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant
With the temperatures dropping and the nights having drawn in, we might turn our thoughts to Christmas to bring us some cheer. Maybe it’s the right time to consider drinking some more robust red wines to accompany the heartier seasonal food being served.
TOO MANY TO LIST… With literally thousands of wine grape varieties around the world, it would be impossible to name them all of them in a brief article. Four very well-known red wine producing grapes and four less well-known ones have been selected in the following commentary with a bit of background on each variety. SYRAH (SHIRAZ) The Shiraz grape is extensively grown in Australia and California but it is under its European name Syrah that it excels in France’s Rhône Valley. The classic wines of northern Rhône, Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are produced solely using the Syrah grape. The dark-skinned grapes produce deep red/ruby wines offering aromas and flavours of black fruits with overtones of black pepper. Shiraz (Syrah) produces hearty spicy reds and the best wines made with this grape variety can produce intense flavours and great longevity. Serve Shiraz or Syrah based wines with red meats, steak, wild game and stews. CABERNET-SAUVIGNON Widely considered as one of the world’s best grape varieties, cabernet-sauvignon is often blended with other varieties such as merlot and cabernet-franc whereby, in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, it produces some of the most sought-after wines in the world. Cabernet-sauvignon is planted in vineyards almost everywhere that red wine is produced; Australia, Chile, California, South Africa and of course France are amongst the wine regions that make and sell cabernetsauvignon as a single grape varietal. The wine is full-bodied, firm and gripping with rich blackcurrant qualities. Often aged in oak, particularly in Bordeaux, cabernet-sauvignon blended with other varieties loses the blackcurrant notes once aged and leans more towards capsicum (sweet pepper) with hints of vanilla from the oak-ageing. Cabernet-sauvignon is ideal with simply prepared red meat and very often recommended with rack of lamb. PINOT NOIR One of the most difficult red wine grapes to grow, pinot noir is very rarely blended with other varieties. This noble grape variety makes the great red wines from the Burgundy region of France and has also found fame in producing top quality reds in New Zealand, California and Oregon. The structure of pinot noir is delicate and fresh with soft tannins and very fruity aromatics which include cherry, plum and strawberry. If matured in oak barrels the wine, once aged, can offer notes of tea-leaf, damp earth and leather. It produces such a huge variety of styles that it is impossible to define pinot noir. Young fresh and vibrant pinot noir is best served slightly chilled and pairs well with grilled salmon, chicken and Japanese sushi, whilst older Burgundy wines are excellent with many red meats and ideal with roast lamb and duck dishes.

WINE
MERLOT Merlot is the fourth most planted wine grape variety in the world in terms of coverage. Almost every red wine producing country will have some merlot vineyards. It is often considered a good wine to introduce new red wine drinkers to because of its fruity aromas and softness. Merlot is also the grape variety that makes outstanding Bordeaux wines of Saint Émilion and plays an important role in the production of Pomerol wines. As a varietal wine from California, Chile, Australia, Italy and many other wine producing regions, merlot usually expresses scents of black cherry and plums with soft tannins on the palate making it an easy red wine to complement many dishes. MARSELAN A new grape which was introduced in 1961 by crossing cabernetsauvignon and grenache, marselan is mainly planted in the Languedoc region of France. If you like merlot then marselan should appeal to your taste buds. Quite intense and aromatic yet smooth and refined with black fruit character and hint of white pepper. Mediterranean roasted vegetables and grilled meats go well with marselan. MENCIA Hailing from northern Spain and Portugal (where it is known as jaen), mencia started to increase in popularity in the 1990’s when new generation wine-makers worked hard to achieve a concentrated and more complex style of wine using this varietal. Cherry flavours along with raspberry follow on from the bouquet of red fruits. Fruity and firm, mencia can be served with simple tapas, grilled steak or burgers.
CANNONAU DI SARDEGNA Cannonau is otherwise known as grenache or garnacha and it now thought that this grape variety may well have originated in Sardinia. Cannonau di Sadegna can be grown in all regions of the island and must spend two years ageing, of which six months must be in either chestnut or oak barrels. With a minimum strength of 13% ABV, the wine tends to be full-bodied with a deep ruby colour. Generous red fruit flavours of raspberry and strawberry along with some spicy notes, Connonau di Sardegna is ideal with roast meat dishes, wild boar and cheeseboards. PAIS The pais vines are believed to have been brought to Chile by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. Pais continued to be Chile’s primary grape variety until the late 20th and early 21st century when the major Bordeaux varieties, cabernet-sauvignon and merlot were introduced. Pais wines have in the past been produced as light easy drinking bulk wines mainly sold in bars and restaurants by the carafe. More recently, some enthusiastic Chilean wine-makers have decided to take more interest in pais, lifting its profile and bottling some excellent light fresh easy drinking reds. Pais is smooth with ripe blackberry aromas and served slightly chilled it goes well with charcuterie and chicken dishes. As Christmas approaches and the dark evening are upon us, it could be the time to try some of our old favourites in red wines or maybe be more adventurous and try something new with our seasonal fayre. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

It stands to reason that as we are not medically trained we are unable to state that our products ‘cure’ or treat certain conditions, however, the general public are already so knowledgeable about CBD products; they know what they want and it has become obvious since we opened the store in Jersey, this is just what people have been looking for locally. We have had so many people contact us to say they are incredibly happy there is now a specialist outlet in the island, providing top quality CBD for general consumption. Many customers report having difficulty accessing good CBD
products and are thrilled they can get their CBD in such a variety of shapes, sizes and formats, making CBD an easy product to fit into their particular lifestyle. CBD has incredible potential to help people and we want to give our customers the ability to explore that potential and in the knowledge that their safety and wellbeing comes first. TESTIMONIAL: “I love the way the Green Machine Jersey is decorated; clean, bright and with a relaxed atmosphere. I was able to sit and drink a CBD coffee in peace, then seek advice from Megan and Katie, who are so knowledgeable and helped me to choose the correct CBD product for my personal needs. I have only been taking CBD for a few weeks but have already noticed a difference. I have high hopes for the future.” Mrs L – St Saviour

Build the colour with a brush and blot between layers for long wearing colour. With dark lips being so big we need to keep bases and eyes very nude but illuminated with highlighting products. A peachy glow can be achieved with using a cream hi-lighter on the cheek bones, eye lids and cupid's bow. Use a gentle shimmering highlighter all over the eye area and kohl pencil to line the eye and finish with lashings of mascara or a set of false lashes. As its party season glitter is back and back with a bang. Now I may hear you cheer or groan as you either love or hate. Glitter doesn't have to be scary and it doesn't have too be for the teeny boppers either. You can wear it subtle as a liner or full on with a festival flare on the cheeks. Diffuse it from the out corner of the eye too the cheek bone for a full party look. A spot on the inner corner of the eye is very simple for a pop of sparkle anytime of the day or night. Finally the look for this season, and I hope it's one too last, is the look of you! Make up isn't too be worn to hide but too enhance this year. Be you, be comfortable and be glam. Embrace you and you'll glow. www.penny-feathers.co.uk

HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT SPARKLY PARTY DRESS FOR EVERY BODY SHAPE There's a dazzling dress out there for every body, says Katie Wright... When it comes to festive fashion, don't overthink it. A sparkly dress is a party-season classic - but with an endless array of sequinned frocks in the shops, which is the one for you? To help you narrow it down, here, we run down five of the biggest dress trends of the season, and how they can enhance your body type. These glittery beauties will make you feel like a million dollars - even when they cost a whole lot less than that... FIT AND FLARE DRESSES Best for: Emphasising your waist If you want to show off your hourglass silhouette - or create the illusion of curves on a straight-up-and-down figure - a defined waist is essential. Wrap dresses are ideal if you're larger on top, while a detachable belt means you can control how cinched in you go. STRAPPY DRESSES Best for: Boyish figures While for some people, wearing a strapless bra or going braless just isn't an option, for those with slimmer frames a spaghetti strap dress is just the ticket. Embrace the modern flapper look with a sassy sequinned mini dress, or bring the Seventies disco vibes with a metallic A-line frock and platform sandals. MIDI DRESSES Best for: Taller ladies While midi lengths have a tendency to drown petite frames, if you're on the tall side, a dress that falls below your knee is flattering and elegant. Whether shift or swing style, sequinned midi dresses offer more coverage if you don't want to reveal too much leg or if your festive 'do calls for more formal attire. OMBRE DRESSES Best for: Focusing on your best bits We've all got certain areas of our bodies that we're not so keen on, and an ombre dress offers a clever way to emphasise the bits we prefer. If you'd rather skim over your hips, choose an ombre frock that's darker at the bottom. Or if you want to hide your arms, go for a dark shade on top. There are some beautiful colour combinations in the shops. MINI DRESSES Best for: Showing off your pins Leggy ladies, rejoice - because the festive fashion collections are full of fabulous sparkly mini dresses. For curvy figures, try a halterneck LBD with a cinched in waist, or keep your top half under wraps with a high neck shift dress - it's all about balance.

Finding the perfect Christmas gift for friends and family isn't always easy - but if they like to lead an active lifestyle, you might want to swerve the usual chocolates and booze and opt for something sporty instead. From weights they can use in the living room, to seamless leggings that fit like a glove, we've scoured the options to find a variety of exciting and useful Christmas gifts for the gym bunny or fitness fanatic in your life. Whether you're on a budget or you're keen to splash the cash, help them to reach their fitness goals in 2020 with one of these prize pressies... UNDER ARMOUR WOMEN'S COLDGEAR REACTOR PERFORMANCE JACKET Make those early morning runs slightly less arctic by adding this snuggly jacket to their kit. It's made from a lightweight fabric that promises to be ultra-comfy and is designed to conserve body heat while also allowing for maximum mobility. The best part? Thermal pockets to keep hands nice and toasty.
ON CLOUDSWIFT RUNNING SHOES There's no better feeling than a box-fresh pair of trainers. These Cloudswift shoes have special foam cushioning tubes in the sole that give a springy and responsive ride from the first toe-off. The shoe comes in a variety of colours; our favourite is the rust hue with orange laces.
FOCUS DUSTY PINK 7/8 LEGGINGS With a seamless design and flattering high waistband, these budget-friendly leggings look just as good as some of the more expensive options on the market. They're made from a sweatwicking fabric that has a 'second skin' fit, providing the ultimate support during those bendy squats and rows.
DOMYOS KETTLEBELL 8KG There's a lot you can do with a kettlebell. Whether you swing it, row it, pull it or lunge with it, it's probably one of the most versatile pieces of equipment going. This one from Domyos is a great mid-weight that can add an extra burn to a home workout - and won't take up too much space in the cupboard.

LONSDALE PRO TRAINING BOXING GLOVES Boxing is one of the most exhilarating forms of fitness going. What's not so great though? Rocking up to your local gym and having to stick your hands into a pair of sweaty gloves that have been worn a thousand times already. There's no law that says you need to have your own, but if you know someone who's thinking of getting on the bags this year, do them a favour and invest in a pair they don't have to share.
ADIDAS 3D BACKPACK If you've ever tried to squeeze your gym kit into a bulging tote bag, you'll know that a sturdy and practical backpack is one of the best pieces of kit you can own. This one from Adidas has space for all the essentials and is big enough to fit a laptop too.
FABFITFUN SUBSCRIPTION BOX If you like the idea of bundling up a variety of little gifts for a friend but don't really know where to start (or don't have the time), this subscription box will do the hard work for you. Fabfitfun's winter box is packed with eight to 10 products (expect skincare, candles, make-up and other treats). You can buy a one-off box, or sign them up for a subscription of four seasonal boxes.
NEW BALANCE ACCELERATE 5 INCH RUNNING SHORTS Is it just us or does men's workout gear tend to be a bit bland? If you know a super stylish guy, treat them to a new pair of gym shorts that don't look like everyone else's. These roomy ones have an elasticated waist to keep everything in place and a blue outer shell that's sure to look the part.
NIKE FUNDAMENTAL TRAINING GLOVES Some protection for the hands can be really important when you're getting into weights - they can help stop callouses forming and allow for a better grip on the bar. With a padded micro-fibre palm, these training gloves absorb slippy moisture and provide an all-important barrier between you and the equipment.
POWER PLATE PULSE This handheld massager can bring relief to tight muscles after a hard gym session, which helps the body recover faster. Simply run it over the targeted area and the pulse head will jackhammer away knots and niggles. It has six attachments to provide different massages to relax and rejuvenate whether you simply want to loosen up your shoulders or really go to town on tight calves.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
BODY-BOOSTING EXERCISES YOU CAN DO WHILST COOKING DINNER Laura Williams' Kitchen Core Workout is perfect for anyone struggling with fitness motivation this season. Claire Spreadbury finds out more... As autumn leaves and temperatures fall, our fitness mojo can too. Yep, just as you were becoming a regular at that exercise class, winter strikes. No more summer sculpting in the park - it's all about donning an oversized fleece as you brave the chilly tarmac. So, what's a reluctant exerciser to do? "It's about a patch-up job while you adapt to a new season," says fitness expert Laura Williams. "That's not to say you should admit defeat and abandon any hope of regaining your movement mojo, but you might need to practise 'Band Aid Bootcamp' as you adjust to new temperatures and seasons." Williams is all for 'incidental exercise' and 'exercise snacking' (bite-size convenient exercise) for tackling this scenario, because maintaining the cumulative effect of small, regular, effective habits can make a big difference: "These efforts get good, visible results, whether you're using them as strategies to get started when new to exercise, or looking to maintain results as you figure out your winter regime."
62 | www.life-mags.com
She advises taking a two-pronged approach to cover all fitness bases; if you're using trusty walking as a method of exercise, walk at varying speeds and inclines (i.e. putting in enough effort to get your heart rate up and get you out of breath), to help maintain fitness levels. Then, make sure you squeeze in a handful of resistance training exercises (either using weights, or your own body weight) to keep you strong and burn those winter calories more efficiently. Williams has created this five-minute kitchen-based routine, designed to be slotted into a busy day - you can do it as you wait for the kettle to boil or the microwave to ping. It targets all your main muscle groups, with a focus on your core, your deep abdominal muscles, to not only keep muscle mass maintained but also help keep bones and joints strong as we head into the chillier months.
BODY BOOSTING:Layout 1 01/12/2019 17:00 Page 2
CHAIR CHISELLER The challenge: Lower legs without arching the back Don't be deceived by the smile this tum-tastic exercise will work not only your regular stomach muscles but lower down the abs too, targeting your big core muscle. Sit towards the edge of a chair and rest shoulders lightly on the back of the chair. Lift your legs towards your chest before slowly lowering, taking care not to arch your back. Do 10 reps, rest for 15 seconds and repeat.
FRIDGE FIRMER The challenge: Drop nice and low without getting stuck This easy-to-master move strengthens thighs and bottom. Position back against the fridge (or another unmovable surface) and slide down, keeping your back flat against the surface, until hips and knees reach a ninety-degree angle. Push back up to the start and repeat. Continue for 20 reps.
WORKTOP WHITTLER The challenge: To keep a straight back and perform the whole set as a pulse At first glance, this might seem 'push-up light' - but don't be deceived. The juggling act of maintaining a straight back with a continual pulse is a chest challenge-and-a-half. Take a large stride away from worktop, position hands just over shoulder width apart and, maintaining a tension in the tummy (i.e. pull belly back towards spine without holding breath), bend elbows, lower chest and straighten again continuously for 60 seconds - without arching your back.
THIGH THRASHER The challenge: Keep the weight on your front heel Tougher than it looks, the Bulgarian split squat is the king of moves when it comes to pins. Place your foot on the edge of a chair, with the other foot positioned a stride forward. Bend both knees and lower the torso towards the floor, taking care to minimise any arch in the back. Push up through your front heel to recruit your glutes (bum muscles) that bit extra. Do 25 on each leg.

In- room amenities include a set menu of complimentary wines and spirits, a well stocked fridge with a selection of soft drinks, which are replenished daily, and a Krupp machine with Julius Meinl espresso capsules. We were then introduced to Feli our delightful penthouse attendant who presented us with a pillow menu featuring goose down, Hypo-allergenic and therapeutic options and whilst our butler popped the cork on a chilled bottle of 2015 Charles Heidsieck we relaxed on our veranda. Later we embarked on a leisurely stroll around the ship. The vessel’s length of 250 metres, width of 32.2 metres and 13 decks (9 accessible to passengers) ensures that there is much to explore. As we wandered around we came upon the elegant Palm Court, the ship's main social venue, where live entertainment includes jazz trios, sopranos and more. We were just in time for afternoon tea and immediately succumbed to the temptations including dainty little sandwiches, scones oozing with fresh cream and fruity jams and pastries galore. Sipping on our piping hot tea, whilst being serenaded by the soothing strains of a talented violinist, we met some of our fellow passengers and the discussions soon centred on entertainment and how to choose which shows, seminars and lectures to attend, and how to fit in all the activities including Mah Jongg, Bridge, fitness classes, putting green, shuffleboard courts, table tennis, golf driving nets and movies shown three times daily in the Hollywood Theatre. Taking along our copy of Reflections (the ship's daily magazine with information on everything) and our shore excursions menu we made haste for the Lido deck, awash with comfortable sun loungers, parasols, couches and enormous sun chairs with huge cushions. A quick refreshing dip in the Seahorse swimming pool, followed by a long spell in one of the bubbling Jacuzzis and then a spot of pampering in the Crystal Salon and Spa was just the ticket. Treatments focus on hair, face, body and even teeth, manicures and pedicures along with massages, detox treatments and holistic well-being. After quite some deliberation I opted for the 75 minute ELEMIS Aroma Spa Seaweed full body massage, which was simply sublime. For pre dining cocktails, we went to the Crystal Cove, which offers a variety of live musical styles including Richard Pucci who tickles the ivories to an appreciative crowd. Inevitably, we were running late and made our way to the Waterside restaurant, the main dining room, which offers open seating and an absolutely first rate service. I selected the delicious wild mushroom wellington with creamed spinach and roasted purple potatoes and accompanied by the 1989 Chateau Lafite -Rothschild, the flavours were enhanced to another level. The conversations with our fellow diners focused on who had secured reservations for the three speciality restaurants and we were in a dilemma as to whether to dine next at the excellent Chinese venue, Silk, which serves a highly praised Kung Po Chicken or Prego, which presents Italian cuisine and, we were reliably informed, the roasted rack of baby lamb with black olive marmalade is perfect with a bottle of Ornellaia 2015 or perhaps Umi Uma where master chef

Nobuyuki Matsuhisa's celebrated 'Nobu' style lobster with truffle - yazu sauce is served and just has to be accompanied by the Sauvignon Blanc 'Asatsuyu' 2017 and of course the Sushi Bar is not to be missed. We plumped for Churrascaria, the Brazilian steakhouse, with Caipirinhas, tapas and Ceviches on the menu and diners wait in anticipation for the moment when the skilled servers parade through the restaurant with grilled meats held aloft on sword-like skewers, taken directly from the grill, and stop at each table to carve slices. And for a more intimate dining experience, the Vintage Room, a unique concept, promotes wine appreciation. The beautifully furnished venue seats a minimum of ten diners for optional dinners featuring vintage wines and champagnes paired with extravagant dishes. I was fortunate to sample a selection of outstanding pairings including the Moet et Chandon, Cuvee Dom Perignon, Brut, Epernay 2009, served with poached lobster tail, Pierre Robert, Fresh Plums and Summer Truffle. For those keen to find a quiet spot, to sink into a comfortable leather armchair and partake in port wines, cognacs and single malt whiskeys and a fine international cigar, the Connoisseur Club is the spot. Venues for post dining tipples are aplenty and we enjoyed the relaxing Avenue Saloon where dark rich woods and comfortable furnishings create the intimacy of a piano bar. We also frequented the luxurious Galaxy Lounge, which presents a variety of entertainment including extravagant shows and we were fortunate to see a Broadway Review Production with excerpts from musicals including Rent, the Tony winner for the Best Musical, the wonderful West Side Story and the hilarious musical Something Rotten. Another highlight was the exceptional performance given by musician and comedian Jon Courtenay who was richly rewarded with rapturous applause and standing ovations. After the show we took the opportunity to show off our nifty footwork on the dance floor at the Stardust Club, which also presents intimate performances, recitals and special lectures. And for those keen to disco dance into the early hours, the intimate lounge Pulse is buzzing, and it's also the place to be for Karaoke fans. One of the more tuneful passengers dedicated his song to the Crystal Serenity and the audience held there glasses aloft and sang along heartily to the Christopher Cross hit ............'Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me. And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility. Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me. And soon I will be free.' The 2020 Alderney Literary Festival ANOTHER REASON TO VISIT ALDERNEY... Alderney is a very special little island. At only 1.5 miles long and 3.5 miles long with around 2000 residents, Alderney offers rich pickings. The island boasts gorgeous beaches, cobbled streets, fascinating history, great walking, spectacular views, and wonderful wildlife. Then, when you are tired from the great outdoors and in need of creature comforts, the Island offers lively pubs, many restaurants and cafés offering great food, and a variety of accommodation ranging from 4-star hotels through to B&B, self-catering and camping. While there are no direct commercial flights from Jersey to Alderney, connections can be made via Guernsey or, of course, our small airport actively welcomes Private Aviators. Perhaps something less well known about Alderney is we have a Literary Festival! The Alderney Literary Festival, now in its sixth year, celebrates all aspects of historical writing. It is a bit like the island itself, offering something for everyone. The Festival takes place over a long weekend in March, attracting visitors from the UK, other Channel Islands, and Alderney itself. Last year – and the year before and the year before that – was a complete sell out! Here are some of the things that Festivalgoers tell us they really enjoy about the Alderney Literary Festival: • Boutique size – all based in the historic Island Hall, Alderney‘s seat of Government;
We would absolutely love to welcome Jersey residents to the 2020 Literary Festival, which takes place on Friday 20th March, Saturday 21st March, and Sunday 22nd March. Led by Roman military novelist and Festival Chairman Anthony Riches, this year’s exciting programme includes Andrew Lownie on his explosive biography of The Mountbattens; Rory Clements with his forthcoming World War II thriller Hitler’s Secrets; and Sunday Times bestselling/Richard & Judy Book Club pick Stacey Halls with her soon-to-be published The Foundling. Jonathan F Putnam delves into Abraham Lincoln’s unsolved cases, Helen Castor explores the real Joan of Arc, and Ned Palmer traces the history of the British Isles through, of all things, its cheeses! Antonia Senior will bring 13th century Scotland to life, Roger Moorhouse analyses the German invasion of Poland, and Miguel Angel Lopez de la Asuncion looks at the very last days of the Spanish occupation of the Philippines through the lens of the year-long Siege of Baler. Finally, but by no means least, Laura Shepherd-Robinson, the Historical Writer’s Association Debut Novelist of 2019, takes a long hard look at Britain’s 18th century association with slavery and the sugar trade with her outstanding debut novel, Blood & Sugar. Individual talks cost £10 each. But you can get 1 ticket to each of the 12 weekend talks for only £95! Rover Tickets can be shared between family and friends and represents a great saving on individual tickets. We also like to encourage youngsters along, so under-18s go free (subject to availability)!
• World class authors - history and historical fiction • A diverse programme of events which includes speakers and panel discussions, and free fringe events; • Range of genres - biographies, thrillers, crime, adventure, romance, warfare, and political analysis • Proximity to authors – our size and informal friendly culture means you meet and mingle with the Authors all weekend.
We would love to hear from Jersey residents and welcome you to join us at this year’s Festival. Do please access our website www.alderneyliterarytrust.com and subscribe to our Newsletter. This will give you all our Festival news together with a full description of books and authors, and the opportunity to buy tickets online one week before they go on public sale.

DECEMBER PAUL DARROCH:Layout 1 02/12/2019 14:42 Page 1
HISTORY
The Fishermen's Chapel at St Brelade's Church. Was the lost Chapel of Havre des Pas once as richly decorated?"
The Lost Chapel By Paul Darroch A PILGRIM, CHRISTMAS EVE, 1419 Winter has fallen on medieval Jersey. From the barren slopes of Mont de la Ville, I survey the vastness of the bay; the sea surging in to meet the sand dunes of St Helier’s town. I glimpse a flicker of candles faraway in the Priory, perched on its rocky outcrop over the waters. It is the eve of Christ’s Mass. In the great manor houses of Jersey, they will soon be feasting on rich meats and pastries. In the little gaggle of houses that make up St Helier’s town, men dream of playing dice, kicking a leather ball around the ditches, finally breaking their long fast. An icy wind is brewing. Even the sheep that graze on the Town Hill are huddling together for warmth, and the field mice have gone to ground. So, I clamber down the slope, and at the foot of the great hill, facing the eastern plain, I stumble across a stone chapel. Long ago, they found mysterious footprints carved here in a rock. Some whispered this earth must have been touched by the feet of the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. So, they built a stone chapel to honour her, and named it Notre Dame des Pas: Our Lady of the Footsteps. I walk through the stone arch and enter the sanctuary. 68 | www.life-mags.com
A gaggle of townspeople are here, kneeling in prayer beneath the beautiful lancet windows. I listen awhile to the mumbled Latin prayers of the priest, and then I slip out into the night. History is coming for this holy place. In the centuries to come, the chapel will be dissolved. By 1646, it is used as barracks for soldiers; and later still, as a Wesleyan meeting place. Eventually, Fort Regent rises, and the crumbling old chapel is torn down, stone by stone. Yet it has one more treasure left to yield, for in 1818 they find the body of a great knight buried beneath it, clad in chainmail, bearing a sword. The Chapel has vanished. In the years to come, there will remain only a plaque in the gardens of La Collette flats to remember the long centuries of faith, all the Christmases that have come and gone. Still the generations to come will whisper its name, whenever they speak of the harbour of the footsteps: Havre des Pas. Paul Darroch is the author of Jersey: Secrets of the Sea and Jersey: The Hidden Histories. Both books are available at Waterstones, Maison de la Mare, WH Smith and Amazon. They are ideal Christmas presents for anyone who loves Jersey and its history.

FIRST DRIVE THE NEW PORSCHE 718 SPYDER By Ryan Hirons This is the first time Porsche's smaller convertible has been given the full GT treatment. Darren Cassey finds out what it's like to drive... WHAT IS IT? For driving enthusiasts, Porsche makes some of the most desirable cars on the planet. The 911 might be the halo model, but the smaller, nimbler and more approachable Cayman, with its optimal midengined layout and compact dimensions, is just as sought after. Then there's the Boxster, the entry-level sports car that fills the more leisure-focused role. Previously, the Boxster Spyder was completely separate from the Cayman models, but now they all fall under Porsche's '718' sports car banner, so this new 718 Spyder is essentially a drop-top version of the ultra-performance-focused Cayman GT4 - an intoxicating recipe.
Facts at a glance Model as tested: Porsche 718 Spyder Engine: 4.0-litre six-cylinder Power: 414bhp Torque: 420Nm Max speed: 187mph 0-60mph: 4.2 seconds MPG: 26 Emissions: 249g/km

WHAT'S NEW? Under the skin, the Spyder shares its mechanicals with the Cayman GT4, making this only the second Porsche convertible with GT roots, following the 911 Speedster. That means the Spyder shares the GT4's active suspension management system, making it 30mm lower than a standard 718, with a limited-slip differential helping get the power down. It's also got a six-speed manual transmission, a lightweight manually operated roof, and a rear spoiler that deploys at high speed. WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET? In 718 models, the engine sits in the middle of the chassis to help optimise weight distribution. In the Spyder, it's a naturally aspirated, 4.0-litre, straight-six-cylinder engine that's good for 414bhp and 420Nm of torque, with 0-60mph taking 4.2 seconds before going on to a top speed of 187mph. Porsche has come under criticism in some quarters, as many of its 718 models use a gruff - yet still mighty powerful - four-cylinder engine. However here, the mighty straight-six returns, and it's an utterly glorious engine. As engine revs climb, there's a refined yet aggressive rasp that accompanies your charge to the red line. The experience is only amplified by having the roof down, with the sonorous combination of engine and exhaust note encouraging you to resist the urge to shift up too soon. It's rapid too, feeling every bit as quick as the figures suggest. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? There is a caveat to this drive - taking place in November, the weather was atrocious. At one point, the relentless rain did break off - just as we encountered fresh snow on tyres better suited to sunny track days. That said, the car still felt special, which is testament to just what a machine the Spyder is. Slip into the cosseting seats and it's immediately apparent this is a driver-focused sports car, with a spot-on driving position and slim, Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel. It's so sharp to respond to steering wheel inputs, the tyres revealing a real sense of urgency even on sodden tarmac, while the six-speed manual is one of the best in the business. Couple this with that glorious engine and, even driven on its tiptoes as the weather dictated, there's enough excitement to elicit a massive grin - and a quick pit stop to pick up a lottery ticket. Perhaps the only criticism is one that's long been levied at Cayman models - the gear ratios. The top of second gear will hit licence-losing speeds, meaning you either have to drive everywhere in that gear, or shift up and not make the most of all those revs.
HOW DOES IT LOOK? All of Porsche's 718 models have a sleek sense of purpose to their design, but the Spyder is surely the best-looking of the lot. It takes the features we already know and love and couples them with retro-inspired rear buttresses that elevate the cool levels to 11, while a subtle aerodynamics package hints at the performance within. Then there's that roof, which looks almost as good in place as it does when tucked behind the driver's head, thanks largely to the way it locks in place either side of each buttress. It is, however, quite a faff to use. It requires pivoting the whole rear section of the car up to be folded within it, but with a couple of locking sections that take more than a moment to get in place. WHAT'S IT LIKE INSIDE? The 718 Spyder is typically Porsche inside, which is to say there are plenty of lovely materials and an ergonomically perfect layout - though here there's more of a focus on the essentials, rather than creature comforts here. There's an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and Alcantaraupholstered sports seats - upgradeable to full bucket seats on request - which feel properly racey. The lightweight ethos continues into the fabric door pulls that replace the heavier door handles, and the infotainment system that can be deleted at no cost to save weight. WHAT'S THE SPEC LIKE? Opt for a fully 'basic' 718 Spyder and this feels like an utterly brilliant deal. Standard equipment includes all that Cayman GT4 running gear, 20-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, swathes of Alcantara and the infotainment system. However, naturally, you can massively increase this price in the options list, with some of the pricier options including a series of seat upgrades and LED headlights. VERDICT There's no two ways about it, the Porsche 718 Spyder is a special car. It just feels right from the moment you set off, with its beautifully judged manual gearbox and sonorous engine that makes you want to take the long route home - every day. The weather could have put a dampener on our day. However, the fact we came out the other end grinning from ear to ear, despite never bothering the car's true limits, is perhaps the best indication of just what a glorious machine the Porsche 718 Spyder really is.

If music be the food of love… Andy Saunders previews a concert coming up which would make a perfect Christmas present…
Anna Fedorova
Whether you prefer the heart-on-sleeve, sweep ‘em off their feet approach, a more relaxed slow-burn, or you like to nail your colours to the mast early and then persevere, Jersey charity Music in Action is looking forward to the Jersey Chamber Orchestra’s Love Stories programme, conducted by Eamonn Dougan, has at least one tune for you! On Saturday 25th January, the Jersey Opera House will be full of the sounds of romance, in a performance sponsored by UBS Wealth Management and Mulberry, with all of the proceeds from the event going to the Oscar MacLean Foundation. It’ll be the perfect pick up after the Christmas season so why not buy tickets now for loved ones. The charity event opens in the city of love itself, Paris, with the Prelude to Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata – a tragic love story in the best traditions of Italian Opera. The orchestra is then joined on stage by Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova, who is particularly well known for her performances of the next work in the programme – Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Her performance from Amsterdam’s famous Concertgebouw was streamed live on You Tube, and is now their most-watched classical concerto with over 24 million views, so the opportunity to hear her play live, without compressed sound and tinny speakers, is not to be missed! Rachmaninov’s concerto took a starring role alongside Marilyn Monroe in the 1955 classic The Seven Year Itch, as well as in David Lean’s 1945 hit Brief Encounter, and made cameo appearances in hits by both Frank Sinatra and Eric Carmen, and is one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of orchestral music ever written. The Bard Shakespeare himself commented “If music be the food of love, play on…” so his words inspire the first three pieces of the second half, as the orchestra performs a piece that no musical celebration of romance could be without – the Wedding March from Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The award-winning Musical Original Singers take on a variety of roles in a selection before a moment of pastoral tranquillity in Frederick Delius’ A Walk To The Paradise Garden. The orchestra’s Eamonn Dougan
Leader, Anna Smith, tugs at the heart strings with Edward Elgar’s beautiful Salut d’Amour before the concert ends with the whirls and smiles of a Viennese Waltz – Roses from the South, by Johann Strauss II. Groups of players from the Jersey Chamber Orchestra will also be visiting schools and care homes throughout Jersey during the week, bring live music to hundreds of children across the island. Music in Action, the charity which runs the orchestra, has a key target of music education and development, so these visits are an important part of this. Anna Fedorova will also give a Masterclass to some of Jersey’s advanced piano students, giving them the opportunity to work closely with an internationally known soloist. Players from the orchestra will be joined by several local Jersey choirs for a lunchtime Family Concert which is guaranteed to inspire and delight the island’s next generation of musicians. Music in Action’s Chair, James Mews, said,“The JCO reached a new level of musicianship in the last concert, the Mozart Gala in October, so it is very exciting to be able to welcome a soloist of Anna Fedorova’s standing to join the orchestra in chasing away the January blues. For us also to be able to feature so many young choirs – all of a very high standard – is also very important…and very exciting!” To buy tickets to the family concert on Saturday 25th January at 12pm or to the evening programme of Love Stories at 8pm) priced from £15 - £27.50 go to the Jersey Opera House Box Office or call 01534 511 115. BOOK of the month... OLIVE, AGAIN BY ELIZABETH STROUT Olive, Again is the graceful, quietly poignant follow up to Elizabeth Strout's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Olive Kitteridge. However, you needn't have read the original (or watched the show) to enjoy it. A collection of stories, Strout uses the brusque, imperious Olive as coat hanger on which to drape tales of Crosby, Maine. Olive is getting old, has succumbed to a new husband (who strangely, she rather likes) and busies herself being nosy, interfering and abrupt. Her interactions with others, in their pure ordinariness, are piercingly tender and touching, from her accosting a famous poet, to visiting a woman dying of cancer. Some are also just amusing - take the couple who, following an infidelity, watch tv side by side on separate televisions, with a strip of duct tape separating their lounge in two. Witty, dark and astute, Olive, Again is gentle but fascinating, and makes you really consider what could be going on between other people. Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout is published in hardback by Viking, priced £14.99 (ebook £9.99). Review by Ella Walker
