And finally, some sunshine….yay! To support the increase in temperature, we have, along with several Wealth and Health features, included a very ‘watery’ theme. We’ve even managed to entwine these themes into a few of our regular sections such as fashion and beauty.

Wealth needs to be celebrated with wine and Martyn Flageul takes up the challenge with his article on ‘Natural Wine’. Last and by no means least we take a peek at the NEW Bentley No. 1 Edition in our First Drive pages… A bientot

Interview this month is with Andy Picot, one of the Island’s language gurus; I spent an interesting hour or two listening to Andy’s life and loves. Paul Darroch in his History piece…dives deep into the watery theme with his a story about Shipwreck on Les Minquiers and we’ve been joined by Karen Gallichan and Tricia Barre talking about the health benefits of swimming and Suzie Webb looks at proper hydration for health. Thank you to The Royal Yacht Hotel for supplying this month’s gorgeous front cover – even the most ardent of land lovers surely would want to sink deep into such a sumptuous looking pool! Luscious home articles, recipes and travel fill several of our other glossy pages and being a Wealth edition we have also included lots of properties for both rent and sale and for your delight.

INTERVIEW

Andy P icot… AT THE HEART OF LANGUAGE During October 2018 I was contacted by a Gentleman who teaches foreign language and was very keen to share his story with me. So keen in fact, he was prepared to wait until this July 19 issue for my interview space; gold dust, it is very popular and often pre-booked several months in advance. I was surprised he was happy to wait so long, but Andrew Picot was adamant he wanted to share with the Jerseylife readership and now having interviewed him, I finally understand why…interview by Juanita Shield-Laignel primitive setting with chalk boards in a community church, proving that one needs very little to learn.” “The following year I applied to teach English in China, with pupils ranging from kindergarten age to adults. I was living in an apartment with a colleague and as it was such a small coastal city, we were the only Westerners there. I didn’t know any Chinese but we were only allowed to speak English to the pupils anyway so that didn’t matter too much during the day, but we had to pick up a few Chinese phrases to be able to feed ourselves in our own time. I had a few private lessons but of course because the Chinese written language is so very different and takes years to learn, it was just speaking and listening, but I could hold a basic conversation in Mandarin.”

ANDY began, “I was born in 1983 in Jersey, raised in St. Martin, great-great-grandson and great-grandson of Connétables of the Parish. I am also the grandson of a Connétable of Trinity to where we moved when I was an adult. We have traced our family tree going back to pre-1500, before that we were in Normandy.” I commented that French is therefore in his blood! Andy smiled. “I was interested in languages from a very early age. Our family farm was opened up as a private guest house during the summer months and I was fascinated by the French guests that stayed with us. Of course I learnt French at school and just seemed to have a natural aptitude for it. I was and am very good at music too and learnt the trumpet and used to play for the Jersey Scout Band. There has been research to suggest that learning language and music go hand in hand.” “It seemed natural for me to choose language for further education and I did a

four-year sandwich course in French and Spanish, at the University in Exeter. My 3rd year abroad was at the University of Granada in Spain, where I did different modules of language delivered in Spanish to improve my language skills and then spent the summer of that year working in a tourist office in Swiss Normandy. It was the 60th anniversary of D Day and so many of the tourists wanted to learn about the festivities. That was a great year for both my conversational Spanish and French, thrown in at the deep end as it were; a steep learning curve, not just in terms of language but in learning the culture also.” “Following my degree, I wanted to go to Latin America and thought I would do my TEFL Teaching English as a Foreign Language Diploma whilst travelling and getting to know different cultures. I stayed with a host family in Costa Rica - living with a family, knowing their routine, habits and lifestyle was a great way to expand by cultural knowledge. I stayed with them for four weeks and my course incidentally, was done in a very

I was keen to know, with all his travels, which had been Andy’s favourite country to visit. “I have been to over 50 countries, admittedly a few were just over the boarder to get my passport stamped, but of all of them I would say, I loved Bolivia. It is the smallest, poorest, highest and yet has the friendliest people I have ever met. It also has very diverse topography and geography from salt flats to mines and everything in between, I found it fascinating and of course I tried lots of wine!” “After University and then travelling I came back to Jersey and decided I would spend that spring and summer at St. Brelade’s College teaching French and European students which I thoroughly enjoyed and then

INTERVIEW

I spotted a job vacancy for a languages teacher at Victoria College. I was very fortunate that at that time, the States were running a scheme meaning I could learn on the job. So I taught French and Spanish for six years at Vic (also at VCP and LQS) and gained all the necessary qualifications. I became involved in the Languages Eisteddfod and took groups of students to Norway, Spain and France and set up pen pal correspondence between the Vic pupils and pupils in Normandy. I also enjoyed setting up foreign language quiz challenges, scavenger hunts and running tours…that was enormous fun. I also ran Bruce House’s Charity Committee. I was also involved with the twinning of Trinity with Agon-Coutainville in Normandy, including being Membership Secretary/interpreter for the towns ‘It’s a knock out’, so my language skills have kept me very busy over the years.” I was interested to know how Andy was now teaching independently. “As with all things, change is inevitable and I began to be a bit disillusioned with the amounts of paperwork involved in mainstream teaching and the bureaucracy and to an extent, lack of stimulation and definitely lack of recognition, some of the things highlighted in the recent Teacher disputes, so I finished at Vic in 2014 and decided to spend two semesters immersed in French so taught groups of students in the Trinity twin town of AgonCoutainville and in Caen. On my return I noticed a niche in the market as there was a sudden steep rise in the amount of parents choosing to home school. Whilst many parents can more than adequately manage Maths and English lessons, many struggle with even the basics of French and Spanish, let alone getting to grips with GCSE level. Modern Foreign Languages rank among the National Curriculum’s least popular subjects. 47% of British secondary schoolers acquired a second language in 2018, compared to 75% in 2002. By 2050, it is suggested that Spanish will be the most widespread language across the Americas! ” “There are a handful of other private language schools but some tutors are retiring

in the not too distant future, so there is enough work for me. Funnily enough I find my afternoons are spent tutoring retired/working adults who want to brush up on their French or learn Spanish, and then late afternoons, evenings and weekends are spent teaching children. And then in my mornings/free time, I am studying and swatting up on my vocab as I am now doing a translation, French into English, home study Diploma (MA) and concentrating on business language including Finance, which is useful for Jersey. Brexit has its implications - French could regain European significance: Bilingualism is increasingly desirable! There are also contemporary affairs to follow; if you don’t keep up with language change, you lose it.” Now thus far, with all his travel and experience I had found Andy’s story engaging but it was at this juncture that my ears really pricked up - “To my mind teaching language isn’t just about my pupils learning new words parrot fashion, but is also about nurturing compassion and empathy, taking a holistic approach. We all know about diversity rights at work and discrimination and so on, but often kids are so wrapped up in using technology, video games with violent themes and there is so much internationalism within social media, I really feel by teaching them not just language but about opening their eyes to other cultures, I am working on opening their minds, their spirit, their heart to different social and cultural backgrounds, giving them a good grounding in compassion for their neighbours lives and showing them something different.” Finally we had got to the heart of it; why Andy was so keen to share his passion for language and what it can do for our children and society at large and I commend him for pursuing it. I wanted to know if Andy has any time to socialise. “So with part time tuition, part time translation and part time study, I don’t have much free time but I do sing/am Publicity Manager for Jersey Festival Choir and I regularly play tennis at the Caesarean Tennis Club and swim a couple of times a week to

keep fit. I am actively involved in social ministry with my Church - St Paul’s.” With that I asked Andy to conclude with a precis of his plans for the future. “I’m going to take an analysis now I have been operating as a sole trader for around 18 months, taking into account the school holidays and now the exams are over. I will concentrate on my own studies during the holidays and then September to December and then January to May are pretty intensive with back-to-back lessons at the Language School…and then all being well, if things keep going as well as they have so far, I would love to visit some English speaking countries. I’ve not yet visited Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and so on and I would love to go back to South-East Asia…” If you wish to contact Complete Languages, please dial 07797 833368 or email Picot.AJB@gmail.com. HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Water!

Far More Complex Than It Looks BY SUZIE WEBB

Did you know that the average human body is about 60% water? Water is essential for life and we cannot go very long without it. We lose water every day (through sweating) and we have no real way to store excess or replenish our lost reserves short of drinking more of it. As a nutrition consultant, I’m always reminding people about the importance of staying hydrated even if that means buying the occasional bottle of water in plastic - as that would be a small price to pay to avoid getting dehydrated. However, the regular purchase of buying bottled water can significantly add to your weekly shopping bill. But what is the best source of water? The list seems endless; tap water, bottled water and if so carbonated or still, spring water or mineral water, alkaline water, distilled, hydrobioactive and hen of course the questions of plastic or glass? A veritable mine-field and yet, one of life’s basic needs. Let’s start with tap water. We are very lucky that Jersey Water do not add any fluoride to the water as part of the treatment process. However, as an important health and safety measure, they do use chlorine to disinfect the water and kill bacteria (some of the chlorine stays in the water after treatment - sometimes you can smell and taste it!). We are told that the levels of chlorine are harmless in the quantities which are used. The miniscule amount you are drinking every day is probably not a problem, but the cumulative effect on the body over years of drinking tap water could be. Numerous studies have shown that chlorine has a detrimental effect on the thyroid gland. My main concern with chlorine is when we shower. We cannot help but breathe in some of the steam from the shower and the miniscule amounts of chlorine are therefore going straight into the lungs where they bypass its delicate structure and enter our bloodstream – every time you shower! Showerhead chlorine filters are inexpensive and easy to fit, and I recommend everyone get one – especially if you drink tap water! MINERAL AND SPRING WATER – what’s the difference? Mineral water (high levels of minerals) must originate from an underwater water table and is bottled at source. Spring water (low levels of minerals) is taken from a source above the ground and

12 | www.life-mags.com

is usually cheaper because it is easier to obtain. Unbelievably 45% of the bottled water we buy is treated tap water! CARBONATED WATER is less hydrating than the same volume of still water, but because of the texture and taste of carbonated water, you will probably end up drinking a higher volume of it therefore doubling the health benefits of your daily water intake. However, there have been studies to show that carbonated water can leach minerals out of the body. STILL WATER – the most hydrating and best for overall health. ALKALINE WATER – there are numerous claims for and against drinking alkaline water. Our normal water has a pH of about 7 – which is neutral. Alkaline water has a pH of 8 or 9 – and the advocates of this water say that it can neutralise acidity in the body. If that is true, then it must also alkalinise the stomach on its way down and the stomach acidity is there to kill bacteria and expel other undesirable pathogens from entering our bloodstream – so it’s a no from me! DISTILLED WATER –I would strongly recommend never to drink distilled water! It has had everything removed and some studies have shown that it leaches minerals out of your body. PLASTIC OR GLASS? – Glass! More expensive and heavy but no nasties and recyclable. Hydrobioactive water - Adding something to your water like a squeeze of lime juice or a few slices of cucumber transforms your water with nutrients, supporting your physical health and hydrating your cells better than plain water. Water does not only hydrate us – it is an important source of minerals particularly calcium, magnesium and sodium. Read the labels to see the quantities contained in the water. A good ratio is 2:1 calcium to magnesium and choose one with a low sodium content, especially if you are on a sodium restricted diet. Whichever water you choose – have a wonderful summer and keep hydrated! www.suziewebbwellness.com For consultations please call: 07797 748054 01534 490698

Sea Swimming; Insanity or One of Life's Essentials? BY KAREN GALLICHAN Do you ever go for a winter walk all wrapped up against the elements & then notice a group of people venturing into the chilly sea and wonder about their sanity? Then, perhaps if you linger a little longer and watch them, do you notice their gales of laughter and happy healthy faces? I am a year round sea swimmer and I love it! Our dips in the middle of winter are short but life affirming. The tang of the cold water prickles my skin and makes me really feel alive. And of course the post swim hot drinks and cake with friends is all part of the joy of winter swimming. As the water begins to warm up as summer approaches, our dips turn into swims as they become longer in length. The laughter and friendship very much remain though. I started sea swimming 5 years ago at a difficult and devastating time in my life. My son who is autistic was in care, so that

he could access specialist education in England & I was going through the pain of divorce. I was training for the swim section of the Jersey Triathlon and that 1,500 metre swim was to change my life. I joined the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club and somehow or other since that first swim, I’ve ended up doing some rather long swims, including solo “Round Jersey” and Jersey to France swims and an English Channel relay. Swimming has given my life friendship, direction, focus, challenge and achievement, but it is more than that. Being out in the sea has a meditative aspect to it; just listening to the sound of your breath and watching your arms enter and pull you through the water can be incredibly calming. You begin to notice the ever changing landscape, the coming and going of the tide, the cloud formations in the sky and the glitter trail of the sun on

the seas surface. It is an escape from our busy lives and our attachment to phones and social media. The sea and the swimming community have helped me put my life back together & build a life I love. The sea is without a doubt my happy place but also offers solace when life is tough. Swimming is very inclusive from the young to the old, from the very fit to the not so fit, there is a swim or dip for everyone. As the saying goes, you are only ever one swim away from a good mood, so why not jump in and try it? You won’t regret having some Vitamin Sea in your life!

Jersey Swimming Club’s Open Water Festival Living on a small island with the most outstanding natural and accessible bays - it’s hard to understand why many islanders took to running the hard, ragged road for exercise instead of dropping down in to the cool, refreshing waters that surround us all. However, with greater investigation and growing reports of the benefits to health and well-being - sea swimming is on trend at last! Jersey Swimming Club’s Open Water Festival is now in its third year and is experiencing a rise in early interest of old and new participants. If this trend continues - the event should progress well and become a brilliant annual outing. The event has a range of distances and age groups, which means there is an opportunity for the each family member to participate. There will, of course, be some serious competition out there on the waves, but to balance out the offering, a Fun Swim and an Open Team Relay are set to lighten the air of competitiveness and give us mere leisure swimmers a chance to take part. The idea arose in 2017 when the JSC management team, whilst maintaining the on-going challenges of a busy competitive club, its members, a huge learn to swim programme and the organisation of competition that involves travel, accommodation, swims, and parents; together with a very long-standing sea swim programme of three highly popular swims - Green Island, Castle to Harbour, and St Aubin - suddenly found a void in competition! So, instead of taking a well earned break – they decided to fill it with an exciting new event for everyone and not just club swimmers. The first year was sponsored by Intertrust but has since run without sponsorship, with the Club continuing to hold the reigns of all the organisation. All sea swims, as the Club have learned over the many years of the three-sea swim programme, are governed by the tides and, more unpredictably - the weather on the day. Keeping one eye on the forecast, Carole Penfold MBE - President of Jersey Swimming

Club, is ready to cancel at a moments notice if the skies darken and the sea begins to swirl! Last year, St Aubin suffered warning of a very large lightening storm sweeping over from France - last minute actions were taken and as the lightening, visible from the harbour, flashed across the sky - swimmers came and reluctantly returned home very dry! This year, it is hoped that the sun will shine on all of the events and provide a great backdrop for supporters too. Picnics on the beach and a warm towel waiting are just what these intrepid sea swimmers delight in. So why not gather your family, friends, work colleagues etc together and join in the sea swim fun. With wet suit or without it is sure to be a wonderful event for everyone. And whether you have plans to take part, or you would just like to come and spectate with a little refreshment on the sands - here is the schedule (weather permitting!) Friday 16th August. West Park. Check-in 6.15pm. Start at 7.00pm. Distances - 1km & 2km: Saturday 17th August. Ouaisne. Check-in 7.15am. Start 8.00am. Distances - 2.5 km & 5km: Saturday 17th August. Archirondel. Check-in 6.15pm. Start 7.00pm. Distance - 3km: Sunday 18th August. Havre des Pas. Check-in 7.15am. Start 8.00am. Distances - 1km & 4km. Plus Fun Swim & Relays. Anyone wishing to take part please contact Carole at the JSC Office. And, as ever, extra help is always needed - at all of the JSC open water events, and in particular – Kayakers are needed for the safety of all swimmers. You can register to volunteer at www.volunteer.je or contact Carole - email admin@jersey-swimming-club.org or phone the office on 01534 870788.

RECIPE

Alfresco Eating

Full of the season's best produce, our top recipes for summer are perfect for picnics, garden parties and BBQ’s. Make the most of the hot weather by eating outside with our collection of delicious al fresco dishes. 2 tsp mild curry powder Sea salt & cracked black pepper 325g can sweetcorn in water 75g gram flour (chickpea flour) To serve: Sour cream or vegan coconut yoghurt Diced chilli Coriander, roughly chopped

SWEETCORN, SHALLOT & CHILLI FRITTERS WITH TOMATO & SHALLOT CHUTNEY These fritters are perfect for a lazy breakfast or weekend brunch. Add a poached egg on top to really indulge. Makes: 6 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes You’ll need: For the chutney: 1 large eschalion shallot, finely sliced 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 40g golden caster sugar 85ml white wine vinegar 150g cherry tomatoes, roughly chopped For the fritters: 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 large eschalion shallot 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 small bunch coriander 1 chilli, seeds removed and finely diced HERBY LEMON CHICKEN ROCKET WRAPS Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1½ hrs Serves: 6 You’ll need: 40g butter, soft 1 lemon 1 clove garlic, crushed 4-5 sprigs thyme 2-3 sprigs sage, leaves finely chopped 1 whole chicken approx 1.7KG 6 spring onions 1 bag Fresh & Naked rocket

What to do: Place all the chutney ingredients in a heavy-bottomed sauce pan over a medium heat. Add 1 tbsp water and bring the ingredients to the boil. Lower the heat and allow to gently simmer and reduce for approximately 10 - 15 minutes - you want to reduce the liquid, breakdown the tomatoes and achieve and thick, sticky jam consistency. Remove from the heat and allow to cool and thicken further. Heat 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in a large pan. Gently fry the shallots in the oil for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and fry for a further 1 minute. Finely chop the stems of the coriander and add to the pan along with the chilli, curry powder and seasoning. Fry for a final minute. Spoon the shallot mixture into a large bowl and sprinkle in the gram flour and roughly chopped coriander leaves. Tip in the sweetcorn along with the liquid in the can and stir through all the ingredients. Whisking with a fork, add 50ml of cold water to create a batter. Leave to sit for 5 minutes for the gram flour to absorb some of the liquid. When the batter is ready, melt the remaining coconut oil in a clean frying pan. In batches, spoon a heaped tablespoon worth of fritter mixture into the hot pan. Turn down the heat to medium and fry for 2 - 3 minutes - the fritters are ready to be flipped when you can easily get a spatula underneath. Cook on the second side for a further 2 minutes. Place the cooked fritters on a lined baking tray and put in a warm oven whilst you make the remaining fritters. The mixture makes 6 decent-size fritters. To serve, stack the fritters on a plate and top with a spoon of tomato and shallot chutney and sour cream. Sprinkle with a little extra chilli for heat and coriander for freshness. 1 carrot, grated 2tbsp olive oil 1tbsp whole grain mustard 2tbsp red wine vinegar 6 wraps What to do: Heat the oven to 190C/ 170C fan. Beat together the butter, zest of the lemon, garlic, thyme leaves and sage. Use your hands to ease away the skin over the breast of the chicken and spread the butter mixture under the skin. Put half the remaining lemon inside the chicken (keep the other

half for the dressing) and season the chicken skin with salt and pepper. Cook the chicken for 1 ½ hrs, basting regularly. Mix together the oil, mustard, vinegar and squeeze of the reserved lemon and season. Slice the spring onions and mix with the herb salad and grated carrot in a bowl. Cut the Chicken into portions and lay on top of the salad. Drizzle everything with dressing. Divide the salad between the 6 wraps and serve. Credit: freshandnaked.co.uk

Serendipity Suppers BRIGHTER FUTURES WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH YOU ONE OF OUR NEWEST AND MOST EXCITING FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES. ‘Serendipity Suppers’ is a fundraising concept kindly gifted to us from Young Bristol, a youth driven charity that works to offer a choice of opportunities and experiences for all young people. Here at Brighter Futures, we loved the concept, formula and opportunity to try something different which will then engage more of our Island community with our work. From these events, not only will our attendees join together and have a little fun – but most importantly, the proceeds from these occasions will benefit our neighbours in need of support here in Jersey. Our Serendipity Suppers will take place throughout September & October 2019 consisting of lunches, dinners, receptions & experiences. It is open to couples, singles, and we even have an event for our 4-legged friends! The unique offering here is that as a guest, the venue and host will only be

revealed a few days before the event itself, hence the name Serendipity Suppers being a perfect theme for these fabulous one-off occasions! • We have found 9 treasured hosts who are willing to help us, the majority of whom are opening up their beautiful private homes in order to support us with launching this initiative • Each of our hosts will be presenting a different theme & also a specialised menu to accompany their own event; in fact the menus and chosen dates are the only initial pieces of information presented to the guests! This is our first series of lovely events which we intend to run this Autumn and then expand next year. We are aiming for these to become a regular and established set of calendar events, thereby also providing sustainable funding for Brighter Futures. We aim to use the Serendipity concept going forwards as a platform to raise more awareness of what we do as a local charity here in Jersey.

It’s a little-known fact that since our charity Brighter Futures was founded in 2008, we have now supported over 1,500 families, individually benefiting over 3,500 islanders which is a remarkable achievement! Working together, we can make a positive difference and it is our mission here at Brighter Futures to fulfil that ambition. Brighter Futures is a local charity supporting parents, families and young people in Jersey. Working alongside the main carer, our educational model provides them with the tools to cope. Supporting 150 families at any one time, we focus on 3 key areas; • SECOND CHANCE LEARNING • PARENT – CHILD RELATIONSHIPS • MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING Together, we are creating Brighter Futures for families in Jersey For more details and to make a reservation please contact: Sharon Betts: 01534 449154 Mobile: 07797 849312 s.betts@brighterfutures.org.je www.brighterfutures.org.je

3 WAYS TO MAKE A SPLASH WITH

Seaside style this Summer Ride decor's most enduring wave and conjure a cool coastal sanctuary. Gabrielle Fagan channels her inner beachcomber to source beautiful beachy buys... The decor tide has come in, and brought with it one of our favourite ever looks - seaside style. Evoking a serene landscape of sandy beaches and blue water in your home will transport you to a shoreside idyll in no time, no matter where you live. "Coastal style's a hugely popular theme that comes in year after year with the predictability of the tide," says Susan White, design director, Hillarys. "Small wonder, because living by the sea or hearing the splash of waves against rocks can instantly refresh body and soul," she adds. "It continues to have an enduring influence on interiors, albeit with a different twist each season, which helps it to stay fresh.

20 | www.life-mags.com

"You can go full-on with seagulls, anchors and statement motifs, or just bring an understated coastal feel to your home. You can simply surf the style, or plunge in with a full-on nautical approach." "Pick up on blues by all means but do incorporate natural materials, such as wood and stone. It's all about reflecting the influence of nature and creating a setting that's uncluttered, relaxing and somewhere you can escape stress," says White. "For a finishing touch, add decorative objects into the mix, such as a dried grasses, chunky throws for texture, and a collection of pebbles or a basket of shells."

DIVE INTO DEEP BLUES Shades reflecting blue skies and seas are a winning combination, and are on trend this year. "Choosing the right colour palette is essential in nailing the modern coastal look," says Becky Snowden, interior style advisor, Furniture Choice. "It's all about recreating the zen and relaxation of being by the sea, but while light blue and white are the usual go-to colours, experiment with darker hues like indigo and navy for a 2019 update," she suggests. "If you prefer neutral white and cream, use that as a base and contrast with rich blue tones to create a calming, ocean-themed vibe."

TAKE IN SEA BREEZES "When creating a coastal inspired room, it's crucial to keep the overall mood light and airy," says Vanessa Hurley-Perera, chief product officer, Sofa.com.

TIP: Pick up on deck chair stripes - a traditional choice for a coastal setting. Feature striped cushions in a living area, a rug in a dining room, a simple throw on the bed, or some nautical' n nice accessories.

"Natural finishes like linen and cotton are a great choice for a coastal look, as these textures have a lovely breezy feel about them. Keep things simple by opting for light toned fabrics, and create interest by layering an accent chair or some scatter cushions in a subtle stripe." Her colour palette choice is blues muted with a soft grey undertone, complemented by whites and ash grey. "Stripped and varnished or painted floorboards are characteristic of a beachside sanctuary, but soften the effect with scatter rugs," she suggests. TIP: Accessorise with beachcomber style elements and you'll almost be able to smell the sea. Grasses, weathered woods, pebbles and shells add subtle colour and texture, says HurleyPerera. "Replicate seashore finds - a fragment of coral for a paperweight, glass bottle vases, netting for hanging plants. This unexpected highlights will bring your look to life," says Hurley-Perera, who suggests scenting the air with an ocean-inspired fragrance. continues overleaf...

TALK TO THE SAND For a cool, coastal vibe, pick up on mellow, golden sand shades for a shorelineinspired setting. "Colours inspired by sandy, sun-drenched beaches are the newest way to interpret shoreside style," says Sue Kim, senior colour designer, Valspar. "These golden hues are the perfect neutrals to transform a home into a relaxing summer escape. As they're on the warmer end of the colour spectrum their mellow glow will work well even when the sun's gone down and the light is colder. "Warm, pink sandy shades are a stylish alternative to creams or yellow," she adds. "And accents of green, blue or aqua can be all that's need for a shot of enlivening colour."

22 | www.life-mags.com

TIP: Rich, deep gold shades will work well on a feature wall, whereas lighter sandy hues won't overwhelm if used throughout on walls and ceilings. For a more contemporary take, experiment with an ombre effect by blending two colours on a wall. With a level and pencil, draw a line where you want the colours to fade into each other, then brush back and forth or use a sponge to blur the boundary.

THE OFTEN UNDERESTIMATED LINK BETWEEN HOME AND HAPPINESS

Domestic Bliss A new study examines the relationship between our homes and our wellbeing - and busts a few myths along the way. By Luke Rix-Standing...

increasingly sexist to the modern eye, while the trope of pictureperfect suburbia has been ruthlessly savaged by films like Fight Club and American Beauty.

Ask any student, young professional or member of 'generation rent' what matters most in their day-to-day lives, and odds are they won't mention the decor of their sitting room.

But perhaps we've been too hasty. The GoodHome Report, a study carried out by the Happiness Research Institute in partnership with Kingfisher and B&Q, suggests our homes play an unexpectedly large part in our day-to-day wellbeing.

If anything, being houseproud is a little out of fashion. The image of the 1950s housewife fussing over sofa cushions looks

"Frankly, I'm surprised we haven't looked at this before," says Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute and author of The Little Book Of Hygge, "given that homes are where we spend more time than anywhere else." THE LARGEST STUDY OF ITS KIND You could be forgiven for approaching the findings with a certain scepticism - defining happiness is always tricky, let alone isolating its domestic causes - but Wiking says it's the largest, most comprehensive study of its kind. "The study spanned 10 different countries and 13,500 people," he explains, "and it showed a lot of common denominators. We looked at in-home factors like favourite rooms, inviting people over, emotional responses and so on, but also broader factors like age, gender, income and home ownership." continues overleaf...

What they found was that home-related emotions accounted for roughly 15% of overall happiness, more than health and fitness, and more than income. "When you think about how many different factors impact our overall happiness, be it employment, money, relationships genetics, I think 15% is surprisingly high," says Wiking. The good news is, the UK scored fourth out 10 for home satisfaction, behind only the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The bad news is - that still leaves as many as one in four British residents expressing dissatisfaction with their home. FIVE EMOTIONAL STATES The report highlights five major emotional factors that play into creating a happy home. The first is 'pride' - having a home which you're happy to call your own, and might actively enjoy showing to other people. "Pride is the end goal," says Wiking. "It's what you want people to feel once they've finished creating the home of their dreams." Secondly, there's 'comfort', having a home in which you feel able to relax and decompress. "In these turbulent times, we like to have a place to let our guard down, and feel energised to take on the world once more," says Wiking. Third is 'control' - a sense of self-determination over your living arrangements - and fourth is the hopefully self-evident 'safety'. The fifth and final aspect is 'identity' - living in surroundings that you feel reflect you as a person and reflect your story. DOMESTIC MYTH BUSTING These qualities cropped up time and again, but perhaps more surprising are the ones that didn't. First on the myth-busting block: That size matters. "Big homes don't equal big happiness," says Wiking. "It's a common misconception but it doesn't matter

26 | www.life-mags.com

how big your house is on paper. It's more how your home feels." Wiking suggests rearranging furniture, regularly de-cluttering, and employing savvy storage. Finely-furnished flat beats messy mansion every time. Perhaps surprisingly, renters were as satisfied as owners. "A lot of people think you need to own your home in order to be happy," says Wiking, "and that's just not the case. So long as you have a landlord that allows you to do some of the things you want to do." In other words, it's what you do with your home that makes the difference - what steps you take to make it your own - rather than what's already there. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Well, first of all you can wait. "We become happier with our homes as we age," says Wiking, "particularly at 50 or above. At that time, people tend to be more settled in, more competent, and more aware of their own priorities." Assuming you'd like more immediate results, there are a few things that seem to work for everyone. "Green is always good," says Wiking, "whether it's balconies, gardens or pot plants in your living room, greenery has a positive impact. Social homes tend to be happier homes - invite people over and make your home a hub." In the end, though, the happiest homes are those that have been personalised, and the survey found that householders that had pursued home improvements were markedly happier with the results. "The overall conclusion is to make time for change, and build up the courage to do something with your home, whatever that may be," says Wiking. "Prioritising your home - that's the best thing people can do."

e n o Z ee r F t Pes HOW TO RID YOU HOME OF ANTS, WASPS, ROACHES AND MOTHS THIS SUMMER Worried warmer weather means an inevitable creepycrawly invasion? Luke Rix-Standing finds out how to keep the crafty critters at bay... Unfasten the shutters, throw open the windows and let in some much needed fresh air - summer is truly on the way. Unfortunately, this can also mean irksome creepy-crawlies that may be inclined to invade your home during the warmer months. Some of them might even interpret your open window as a gilded invitation to enter. Here's how to save your home from the seasonal bug barrage, from calling in exterminators to putting your suits in the freezer... CLOTHES MOTHS It's the fashionable homeowner's worst nightmare: Throwing open your wardrobe to find that a biblical plague of clothes moths have turned your Sunday best into their own personal munching ground.

The first most people know of a moth invasion is shelf-loads of ruined fabric, so preventative measures are best. Moths prefer to dine on animal-based fabrics, so your silk socks and cashmere cardigans should be priorities for protection. They thrive in dusty condition, so your first line of defence should be a clean, well-ordered wardrobe in regular use. Buy high quality garment bags to guard higher-value hanging items, pack your woolly jumpers into compression bags if you can (you probably won't be needing them until autumn anyway), and thoroughly vacuum your wardrobe to expel well-hidden larvae. Don't heat rooms unnecessarily (moths like it cosy), get rid of unwanted clothes promptly to stop them becoming a breeding ground, and beat your rugs once every couple of weeks. Perhaps most of all - beware buying vintage and second-hand, particularly if it's made from moth-prone material. We're not saying don't ever buy from a charity shop - just be mindful and be sure to get items appropriately cleaned before chucking them in with the rest of your clothes. If it's already too late, discard any badly damaged clothing immediately, inflict on your closet the deepest of deep cleans, and pack away endangered items in the freezer for at least 72 hours. The cold should kill off any extant larvae and eggs. Mothballs can work but should really be a last resort and considered carefully - they're full-blown pesticides and breathing large amounts isn't very good for you. More eco and lung-friendly are sticky pheromone traps, which attract and ensnare male moths, ensuring they can't breed. WASPS Of all household pests, wasps are perhaps the most intimidating. Through spring and early summer, the buzz of a worker wasp rings alarms bells for even the hardiest homeowner, aware that continues overleaf...

thousands of fellows could soon follow to nest in attic, chimney or eaves.

entrance to the nest. The ants will carry the mixture inside, where it will promptly kill all that consume it.

We're right to be wary - wasps can attack in numbers when provoked, and a nest can contain literally thousands. If the nest is remote and easily avoided, it might be simpler to wait out the season than risk the wrath of the hive-mind, though consider potential consequences for curious children or pets.

Less deadly but often equally effective solutions include diluted white vinegar and lemon juice. Neither are likely to kill an entire colony, but the smell is so unpleasant to their little ant noses that it might force them to relocate.

Wasp nests can theoretically be removed with designated insecticide, but you should only attempt this with small, easily accessible nests, if you're certain you're not allergic, and feel confident you're taking all necessary steps to tackle the job safely and protect yourself and others. Generally speaking, we recommend calling in a professional.

COCKROACHES The story goes that in the event of a nuclear holocaust, cockroaches would be the only animals resilient enough to survive. Thankfully we've never had the opportunity to test this, but you can imagine how hard they must be to dislodge from your kitchen.

ANTS Think how annoying ants can be on a picnic. Now think how head-bangingly irritating that would be transposed into your pantry. Ironically, ants are efficient predators of fellow pests like bed bugs and fleas - but once they start turning up in the butter they've overstayed their welcome. Ants are small, tenacious and numerous - so your only real recourse is brute force. Commercial insecticides are generally effective - anti-ant gels and powders masquerade as food and are carried back to base by the unsuspecting workers. In a domestic setting however, chemical solutions aren't for everyone and might not be sensible if you have tots and pets, and there are various home remedies that have proven effective against the invaders that you might want to consider. Use their sweet tooth against them - mix a tablespoon of boric acid with sugar in a one-to-three ratio, and lace it around the

32 | www.life-mags.com

As is so often the case, prevention is preferable to cure. A dirty kitchen is a roach-friendly kitchen - an overturned cereal box at the back of a cupboard, leftovers that missed the bin, crumbs festering behind the fridge and so on. Pack food away in sealed containers and do not leave any out in the open. Seal obvious entry points to your home - cracked walls, draughty doors, torn windows screens etc - and invest in a fully sealed rubbish bin. Non-edible clutter like paper and cardboard can provide a perfect home for a family of roaches too, so tidiness is nearly as important as cleanliness. Once established, roaches live up to their reputation as some of the baddest critters in the business. Insecticidal sprays are not generally effective, while bait stations are expensive and only moderately better. Make your home as roach-unfriendly as possible, and if the problem persists, call in the experts.

4 WAYS TO BREAK THE DECOR RULES AND ROCK A

Boho Vibe at Home Stylist and interiors free-spirit Fifi O'Neill travelled the world in search of the best boho looks for her new book. Gabrielle Fagan takes a look... If you love breaking the decor rules and flying free with your style, then 'boho' is surely the way to go. There's no bigger fan of this creative, expressive approach than glamorous international stylist, Fifi O'Neill. The author and decor expert lives the look in her own homes - and has travelled the world seeking out the best examples of boho interiors for her new book, Global Bohemian: How To Satisfy Your Wanderlust At Home. It's packed with ideas and tips, and a brilliant starting point for anyone curious about going boho.

O'Neill is clearly delighted that this layered, vibrant and organic style, long associated with artists, musicians and writers, is now making an impact on the more mainstream decor scene. "If you revel in freedom from conventions and rules, love a space that reflects individuality and spontaneity and have a fondness for a fusion of global goods, bohemian style is pure catnip!" she enthuses. The joy in this way of home styling, O'Neill promises, is that you can tailor it exactly to your taste and embrace variety. Whether exuberant or subtle, eclectic or sophisticated, bohemian style welcomes a free-thinking approach to decorating. "After all, why settle for one style when you can indulge a love of several?" she declares. "There are so many beguiling options and

ROMANCE THE ROOM "While I love vivid and cheerful hues in other people's homes, I prefer a softer palette for my own. I find that after travelling around the world for my work, I need a soothing, peaceful romantic environment, where I can reflect on everything I have seen and regroup," says O'Neill. "I wanted to conjure an uncomplicated, dreamy mood and beautiful blues always have that effect on me. In addition, a soft palette makes a beautiful backdrop to layer with personal items. I like rooms to tell a story, but also feel playful yet restful." She often experiments with colours, furniture arrangement and accessories, and says: "The look of my home is ever changing but it shows my true spirit. I am a romantic and hearts are my greatest weakness. I love elements that have a human connection to them. They bring a unique dimension and an artful addition to any space." they're so easily attainable. Its flexibility and affordability are what makes bohemian decor so appealing to me." Her recipe for the look features jewel-toned items, metallic touches, alluring prints, a fusion of global influences and layers of textures. Finally, add a dash of mismatched pieces from various origins and eras, delicious colours, exquisite textiles and imaginative displays. Then simply mix into a beguiling blend, display with flair, and sit back and drink in the pleasure of a space that's truly unique to you.

GET IN THE SPIRIT A monochrome scheme, tropical plants and Eastern artefacts like Buddah heads give this setting a far-away feel that's both zen and chic. "When I first saw this cottage that came with my house, it was love at first sight. The sun-bleached tin roof and the exposed rafters had an irresistibly seductive bohemian feel. However, it needed a major decorating facelift," explains O'Neill.

She aimed for a "fresh, young, hip look" with white painted walls, ceiling and exposed rafters", which she contrasted with a black painted floor. It adds a masculine touch, which balances the more feminine aspects of the decor and provides continuity between the sleeping and living areas. WHIP UP A STYLE SANDSTORM There's an out-on-the prairie, nomadic feel to this boho look, and its desert palette of browns, sand and cream are easy-on-theeye. "I love incorporating things from everywhere, from Morocco to vintage American farmhouse," says owner Kari Payne, who shares the space with her husband John, and has embraced influences from the early simplicity of Native American and the South West, to elaborate Spanish and Mediterranean styles. "I think the connecting factor to all these cultures is their rustic, artisanal and hand-made quality," she explains.

I ended up using 38 different colours." "My dad was an interior designer in the 1970s and gave me the confidence to mix styles and eras. I love warm, cosy interiors with a mixture of rustic and modern, and a collected, eclectic vibe. To me, it's relaxing and inspiring all at once." Take your time and combine a mix of pieces you truly love, advises Payne, who also researches Instagram and Pinterest for ideas and inspiration. "Designing a home to be unique and personal to you and a reflection of your life, is what makes a house a home," she adds. BASK IN A BEACH HUT VIBE A tropical cocktail of colours has been used to give punch to a laid-back, kick-off-your-shoes seashore-inspired setting. "For both the exterior and the interior, my true inspiration was nature," says Kandice Ridley, who's embraced a tropical boho style at her home on an island off the coast of Florida. "All the colours are drawn from ocean sea glass, the skies at different times of day, rainbows, foliage and the amazing plumage of island birds.

Spirited fabrics, fanciful accessories, exotic furnishings and nature-inspired shades set the tone, and in her living area there are lovely touches such as a Hawaiian Hula-style raffia shade, collections of shells and beachcomber finds. "For an informal room that looks well planned out, mixing a variety of colours, fabrics and textures does the trick, as long as you always include the same shades of one colour to pull it all together," she adds.

THE DOMINANT DESIGN TREND RENDERING WALLS REDUNDANT

Open Plan Living Some say it's had its peak, but open plan designs are still staggeringly popular. Luke Rix-Standing ponders the appeal of blurring room boundaries... There are exceptions to every rule, but we'd guess the phrase 'open plan' mostly conjures images of a modern, minimalist apartment in whitewashed monochrome, dotted with oddlyshaped furniture from the darkest corners of IKEA. Or, depending on your profession, a vast integrated office space filled with shoulder-high plastic partitioning.

In reality, 'open plan' can be a slightly trickier concept to pin down. "In the simplest terms, it's a connection between the living room, dining room and kitchen," says Charles Bettes, managing director of London architecture firm gpad (gpadlondonltd.com), "linking together those three primary functions." In pictures and catalogues, you'll sometimes see open plan bedrooms thrown into the mix, but Bettes says this is usually more aesthetic than practical. "They're cool spaces and they look really great, but open plan bedrooms are rare," he observes. "They don't provide even that basic level of privacy." At the extreme end of the open plan scale lies the studio apartment - an NYC staple with just one main room plus a (probably tiny) bathroom. Rarely a stylistic choice, it's often not a brilliant ambassador for the possibilities of open plan design though. WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE OPEN PLAN? Open plan is not for everyone - the lack of privacy might start to grate when the in-laws come to stay, your son takes up weightlifting, or your daughter starts playing the drums. But there's a reason it's cantered to the cutting edge of interior design. continues overleaf...

HOME LIVING

First and foremost, open plan arrangements almost always maximise natural light. One glass-panelled wall or set of glass doors can do the job of several rooms worth of windows if unhindered by walls or doors. Secondly, it encourages social living. An open plan home doesn't split people into separate spaces, and you can often at least see your loved ones, even if you're all doing different things. Thirdly, though open plan is often associated with cavernous apartment buildings and sprawling office floors, town and citydwellers are increasingly using open plan designs to maximise efficiency in smaller spaces. "In the city, space is at such a premium that the houses and flats we're designing are getting smaller all the time, and tiny pockets of space can feel quite claustrophobic," says Bettes. "By opening those spaces up, the whole thing feels larger." On one level it's common sense - if your kitchen and dining table are in the same space, that's two rooms taken care of in one. Finally - and you may think this doesn't affect you but it probably does - open plan living is thoroughly in vogue. Open any magazine, glance at an appropriate billboard, and you'll frequently see homes that are airy, fluid, high on light and low on masonry. "A lot of it comes down to fashion," says Bettes, "and I think a lot of people desire open plan because it gets talked about a lot." HOW DO YOU MAKE OPEN PLAN WORK? Open plan design can look sleek, spacious and ultra-modern or it can seem cluttered, invasive and incoherent. The key, says Bettes, is to strike the perfect balance between fluidity and separation. "There doesn't have to be one big rectangular space," he says. "You could have large doors that fold back, or sliding doors that you can have open during the day or when you have people round. You can use glazed partitions - providing a visual link to other rooms - or curtains that you can pull across to create more intimate spaces." You're looking to create three distinct spaces which are separate without being disconnected - retaining a sense of fluid flexibility without messily merging them into one. Consider the potential of waist or shoulder-high partitions, or doorway-like arches that clearly demarcate your space.

40 | www.life-mags.com

Link rooms together with design aspects like colour and material. "Different colours can look nicely contemporary, but can also look quite stark," says Bettes. "You can't have one red room, one blue room." Sharing wall colour avoids any undesired clashes, while laying down universal flooring links rooms together with one foundational surface. For most people, open plan is a choice - new builds, redevelopments, moving homes etc - but be aware that it may not be so simple if you live in, for example, a Victorian town house. You can start knocking down the walls, but, even with the right planning permissions, it gets very pricey, very fast. THE NEW NORMAL OR A PASSING TREND? Some architects have argued that open plan living might have already peaked, and that in the coming years more conventional floor plans will once again prevail. "Five years ago, everyone wanted to be open plan," says Bettes, "but there's just a feeling it might go back the other way. "A key driver is iPads and other devices - traditionally families gather around TV screens, but now people are finding smaller pockets of space to watch things individually." Whether or not these predictions pan out, the open plan revolution has changed the new generation - at least in urban areas. A recent survey on home preferences by L&Q development The Gateway, found that only 14% of London's millennials would consider a separate dining room a priority. We may yet head back to separate rooms, but who's to say they'll be the same ones.

CHECKED THE ELECTRICS LATELY? 7 SIGNS YOUR HOME NEEDS REWIRING It's easy to never give the electrics a second thought, but potentially dangerous warning signs should never be ignored. By Lisa Salmon... Electricity is something most of us take for granted, without giving much thought to its awesome power. But if your home is in need or rewiring, that awesome power may become worryingly or even dangerously obvious, potentially leading to electric shocks or fires. "Rewiring your home can mitigate the risk of a potential electrical accident occurring as a result of old and poor or damaged wiring," says Martyn Allen, technical director at the campaigning charity, Electrical Safety First (ESF; electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk). "Home owners should be wary of the warning signs that the property's wiring may need replacing." The cost of rewiring can be quite shocking - Allen says it can set homeowners back anything from £3000 - £5000 for an average house. And cost isn't the only consideration - he warns that rewiring a property will inevitably cause some disruption, including the need to replaster and re-paper walls after the work

42 | www.life-mags.com

is complete. Then there's the length of time it takes - the electrical work should take around a week, with redecorating after that. However, ESF points out that if your home does need rewiring, there's an alternative way to improve the safety of your electrics. Replacing the consumer unit or fuse box with a modern one that will include RCDs (residual current device, a life-saving unit designed to prevent fatal electric shocks if something live is touched) will protect homeowners from the dangers of mains electricity. Allen says installing such a unit will take around half a day and set you back approximately £500, and adds: "If homeowners wish to go about having their wiring checked in the home, we recommend only ever using a competent, registered electrician to undertake this work." But how can you tell if your home needs rewiring or a new fuse box? Here are some of the warning signs... 1. PERSISTENT BURNING SMELL If you haven't burned your dinner and there's a burning smell that won't go away, your house may need rewiring. If you smell burning and can't identify the source, turn off the power at the



HOME LIVING

circuit and contact an electrician immediately. The odour, warns Allen, is the "distinctive smell of an electrical burn which is similar to that of fish". 2. SCORCHED OR DISCOLOURED SOCKETS OR SWITCHES Brown marks on electrical sockets can be the result of tiny fires caused by loose connections inside the sockets, which can create little arcs of electricity and fire. And just because there's no scorch marks doesn't necessarily mean there's no problem, as the arcing could occur in the wiring within the walls. Don't Ignore any discolouration, as the problem could become more dangerous. 3. FUSES BLOW REPEATEDLY If the fuses blow regularly and randomly, it could be a sign your house needs rewiring, although it could simply be a faulty appliance causing the problem. But if it keeps happening and you can't identify an appliance that could be behind it, get an electrician to check your wiring. 4. FLICKERING OR DIMMING LIGHTS One flickering or dimming light is probably just a fault with a bulb, but if you notice regular flickering lights in several rooms, it could

be a sign of electrical problems and should be checked out. 5. ELECTRIC SHOCKS If you've got an electric shock, however small, when plugging an electrical appliance into a socket, then it needs checking urgently. Similarly, if there's a buzzing sound from a socket, get it checked. 6. HANGING SOCKETS If one or more wall sockets are hanging off the wall, exposing the wires behind them, it can be very dangerous - particularly if you have children or pets. Get an electrician to mend the socket and check the whole system quickly. 7. AN OLD HOUSE If your house is more than 30 years old and you don't know if it's been rewired, or the switches, sockets and fuse box look old, you should get an electrician to have a look at your electrical system. It's recommended that your electrical installation is tested every 10 years if you own your home, and every five years if you rent. Older houses also tend to have fewer electrical sockets, meaning extension leads are more likely to be used, and sockets can sometimes be dangerously overloaded.

Howard Davis Park is unquestionably one of Jersey’s most prestigious parks. Did you know that Acorn Nursery, Jersey’s home-grown and blooming social enterprise, provides the bedding plants? CAROLINE MOODY takes a look behind the scenes to see how it takes shape…

Jake

As hundreds of commuters and visitors know, a walk through Howard Davis Park is always a joy. Past the immaculate lines of war graves and the formality of a rose garden, through a walkway of wisteria, to the open green space which has been enjoyed by Islanders since 1939. For the young and young at heart, quite apart from the play area, there is a toad pond to watch for tadpoles and new signs which invite you to ‘spot your local pollinators’. And, at the main entrance at the Colomberie end, there are bursts of colour in the bedding and some patterns of the shape of Jersey and the Island flag. What you might not know is that the park’s bedding plants are supplied by Acorn Nursery, part of Acorn Enterprises, and have been for the last six years. Acorn nurtures 100,000 plants a year for the States of Jersey as well as 285,000 to sell to members of the public from their greenhouses in Trinity. The States contract is worth at least 25 per cent of the nursery’s income from plant sales. But for nursery manager Daniel 44 | www.life-mags.com

Cunningham, who has been with Acorn for 11 years, it is not just about the money. ‘Without this contract starting, we would not have got our pricking-out machine, we would not have the compost bale-breaker, we would not be able to hire the ten extra people that we take on for two months every season. ‘And it’s giving the work experience that I care about. The contract is crucial for the development of the clients who attend here.’ Acorn Enterprises provides employment, training and development opportunities for people with a disability or long-term health condition. The nursery has been doing this since 1991 but in

Christopher recent years the charitable operation has expanded to become Jersey’s biggest social enterprise and now includes the Woodshack and the Acorn Reuse Centre. Daniel explains that plug plants such as marigolds, lobelias, begonias and busy Lizzies are bought in from Ball Colegrave in Oxfordshire. Growing from seed would require too many additional resources, not least space and heat, and the need to keep pests away. One year, Daniel adds, mice ate a whole batch of marigold seeds. For clients, jobs include pricking out, potting up, tending the plants to keep them in their best condition, feeding and watering them, and pruning if necessary. When Jersey Life went to meet some of the clients in the large greenhouse, Jake was deadheading marigolds, Gemma was removing labels from the pots and trays which are to be recycled, and Christopher was potting up pansies from tiny plug plants.

‘I feel very proud when I see the plants in the parks,’ Christopher said. ‘You can say, I did them, and you can see how much they’ve grown.’ The tasks teach the clients new skills but it’s more than that, says Daniel. ‘It’s about fostering a sense of self-worth in every single person who works in the greenhouse, which will have a huge positive effect on their perception of how they see themselves, hopefully giving a boost to their confidence and wellbeing. Some of the people we work with have been institutionalised at a young age and some have been told all sorts of things about what they can’t do. For us, it’s about the things that people can do. GARDENING

This year, they have filled up the baskets and borders at Trinity Parish Hall. Daniel works a year ahead and has already started looking at getting in plenty of red, white and blue for the 75th anniversary of Liberation in 2020.

Gemma ‘I’m not concerned about people moving on from here. I let our Employment and Transition teams worry about that. What I want to do is make sure that people know that they are respected, that the work they have done is valued, and that every single person who works here feels valued and feels part of our team.’ There is incredible pressure to get the work done in April and May but Daniel makes sure this does not get passed on. ‘I even tell other staff not to run. Rushing around and raised voices are not conducive to a good working environment.’ Acorn Enterprises are helping an increasing number of people who have mental health issues. The peace and quiet of their allotment has also proved particularly beneficial to people with mental health issues. In the field behind the allotment, a team of volunteers from PwC recently helped plant 1,000 pumpkins so that they will be ready for Halloween. Daniel explains that their nursery operation is a year-round process. Acorn supplies the summer and the winter bedding for not just Howard Davis Park but also Coronation Park and Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Park in St Brelade. They get the order of quantities and plant varieties from the States of Jersey some six months before. The plants are expected within a two-week window from the middle of May and again in October. ‘It’s a balancing act, getting the batches of plants right so that each park gets the plants at an optimum time, and of course it is weather-dependent,’ he says. ‘If they ask for 1,200 begonias, I grow 1,400. You have to grow extra of every variety in order to fulfil the order.’ It is inevitable there will be some left over, he says. If there is a surplus, Daniel, a horticulturist who has worked for Men of the Trees, Government House and Jersey Zoo, happily donates plants to primary schools and other charities. This year Acorn has given plants to Mont à l’Abbé School, Grands Vaux and St Martin’s School. ‘It’s nice to help people out and get children interested in growing,’ Daniel said. ‘A lot of the schools have implemented Forest School classes and are creating wildlife habitats. Anything we can do to help with that is extremely worthwhile.’ Acorn Nursery has also been helping with the design and supply of bedding plants at the Merton Hotel and St Brelade’s Bay Hotel. 46 | www.life-mags.com

‘Our work gives people real pride,’ he says. ‘We spend a lot of time displaying the plants, providing customers with visual clues as to what plants and colours complement or contrast with each other. To provide the best training facility we need to be businessfocused and to show everyone that we are a professional and successful nursery. It’s great for people to want to buy plants here because they support what we do in the community, but actually I want people to buy here because our plants are the best and the most competitively priced.’ This year Acorn has extended its range to include more alpines, herbaceous perennials and shrubs. Perennials, he says, particularly make sense now that Acorn is a year-round operation with the other strands of the social enterprise on their site. ‘It’s good to have a wider range of plants,’ Daniel says. ‘It helps extend the season and makes more commercial sense.’ He jokes that he likes to remind his colleagues that the nursery was there long before Reuse and the Woodshack, but he admits that those parts of the operation have brought a change in the customer base. ‘It used to be a traditional, older person supporting Acorn for what it was. Reuse has brought some different people up, people who care about the environment. We use biological control in all of our greenhouses to minimise the need for any form of chemical sprays, and we recycle all the pots, labels and compost wherever we can.’ He says that he is very proud to be supplying quality plants to grounds as prestigious as Howard Davis Park. ‘Maybe I’m a bit biased because I helped redesign an area of the park. On a professional level, I am very proud to work here anyway, but I think about everyone who works here, and how proud they must be when they walk through those parks. We don’t all have really big gardens over here. I think sometimes we don’t notice how lucky we are to live in Jersey. Our parks are beautiful and we are proud to be part of that.’ Image credit: David Moody

Bienvenido

a Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by Rebecca Underwood

Las Palmas Cathedral Surfer dudes on Las Canteras

Gran Canaria, the third largest of the Spanish Canary Islands covers 602 square miles and is located in the Atlantic Ocean, only 93 miles off the north western coastline of Africa and is known as the miniature continent due to the varied landscape, long stretches of beach, sand dunes, deep ravines and different climates. The island’s volcanic interior is made up of 32 protected sites and more than a third of the total area has been recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The 4.5 million tourists per year include an increasing number of sports enthusiasts including cyclists, quad bikers, hikers and rock climbers eager to explore the natural environment whilst honing their skills. Gran Canaria is also a popular spot for all types of nautical sports. Windsurfers are drawn to Pozo Izquierdo beach, the site of the annual Gran Canaria Wind and Waves Festival, which is held in July and attracts the very best competitors in the world including local champions and twin sisters Daida and Iballa Ruano, recipients of 27 world titles.

Casa de Colon Las Palmas

As a complete novice I focused my attention on Las Palmas which was founded in 1478 and is the largest capital in the Canary Islands. I headed for Las Canteras beach, a protected area and diving site, which lies in the heart of the city and exudes the distinctive ‘vibe’ of mainland Spain. ‘Surfer dudes’ from far and wide gather and they are all seeking to ride the perfect wave, taking advantage of the prevailing trade winds. I spotted several groups of inexperienced surfers at a well known point named La Circer, which is the ideal place to learn as there are plenty of schools for beginners in the local area. After some deliberation, and watching surfers tumbling into the ocean with arms and legs flailing, my courage deserted me. I remained on terra firma, and embarked on a leisurely stroll along the wide promenade beside the shoreline. Many local families of all generations were dining al fresco, bathed in the warmth of the sunshine, whilst hordes of laughing children were playing on climbing frames in a spacious outdoor playground.

Gran Canarian apartment lounge

A genuine surfer dude! beside a crater of an extinct volcano, six hundred metres above sea level, and it is the oldest course in Spain. Designed by the Scottish architect Philip Mackenzie Ross, the first president of the British Association of Golf Course Architects and the designer of the Alisa Course in Ayr, the Real Club de Golf’s first nine of a total of eighteen holes (Par 71) were constructed to take the prevailing breeze into consideration and throughout my leisurely round I was consistently distracted by the spectacular surrounding views of deep ravines, the volcano’s soaring summit and the ocean blue. Later that afternoon I returned to Las Palmas and set off to explore the city’s Plaza de Santa Ana in the historic district of Vegueta. I paused awhile to admire the splendid buildings of the old Town Hall and then visited the magnificent Cathedral de Santa Ana, which is the city’s most popular attraction. Initially constructed in 1500 at the command of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile and then refurbished and re constructed during the 1700’s, it is a mesmerising example of Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical architectural styles. The structure features two soaring campaniles and a beautiful rose window and I was most fortunate to see the rich colours of the stained glass windows illuminated by the sunlight. The cathedral’s interior features several striking columns which resemble palm trees, and there are numerous pieces of art which demanded my undivided attention. The Casa de Colón; a museum dedicated to the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus who accomplished four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, under the patronage of the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, is also a popular attraction. In 1492 Columbus anchored his armada of three ships, La Niña, La Santa Maria and La Pinta, in the Port of Las Palmas during his first voyage to America. It is said that Columbus stayed in the Casa de Colón, which was re built in 1777 and now features fine lattice balconies, elaborate doorways and spacious, peaceful courtyards. Exhibits, within the 13 rooms, include an extensive selection of impressive paintings, a fascinating replica La Niña cabin, navigation equipment, and other maritime treasures and I spent long periods of time pouring over nautical charts and maps. Following my own explorations I headed back to my spacious, airy and air-conditioned accommodation located right on Las Canteras promenade. Featured on the HomeAway website, the apartment consists of one double and one twin bedroom, two bathrooms, a kitchen with every appliance including a dishwasher, an enormous lounge with a dining area and a large balcony with 50 | www.life-mags.com

two comfy sun loungers, which is the perfect spot for an afternoon snooze in the sunshine. There is a utility room with a washing machine and dryer and the apartment also comes with a garage, which is a real bonus as parking in a busy capital is never easy. Opposite the property, the Las Arenas shopping mall is crammed with shops including a Carrefour supermarket with an excellent delicatessen and if you fancy some additional retail therapy the 7 Palmas shopping centre, located on Av Pintor Felo Monzón, is only a ten minute ride away and includes a huge Mercadona supermarket with an impressive fresh fish counter. After purchasing my groceries I changed my mind about cooking and headed for VIPS, a trendy restaurant on the ground floor. Dining alfresco, I sampled the delicious BBQ ribs, served with crunchy onion rings, fries and a chipotle BBQ sauce and accompanied by a glass of Marqués de Grinon Crianza it was a delightful dining experience. I held my glass aloft in honour of Christopher Columbus and reflected on his words; ‘by prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailing arrive at his chosen goal or destination’. ‘TOP TIP’: ACCOMMODATION For more information on the featured property (#6214923), and more across the world, visit the most trusted holiday rental company: homeaway.co.uk. In a recent survey, twice as many women said they would rather go to the dentist than wear a bikini on the beach. That's right, the dentist. Why? Two-thirds of those questioned in the research, carried out by Figleaves, said the main problem with swimwear is that it's not designed to flatter and support, while 55% said that shopping for it was frustrating and confidence-draining. But it doesn't have to be that way. With the right know-how, you can identify the type of swimwear that will boost your confidence - not deplete it - and narrow down the search when shopping. "There are shapes to lift you, give you push-up or more cover, as well as less plunging styles, plus underwired and non-wired," says Suzanne Pentland, swimwear expert at Freya. Since bikinis are a no-go for so many women, we asked Pentland for her advice on the best one-pieces for flattering the four main body types. Here's what she had to say, along with our pick of this season's best swimsuits... BODY TYPE: APPLE "If you're looking to flatter an apple shape, a swimsuit is perfect for covering your tummy area and focusing on the areas of your body which you are most confident with - like your bust or legs. "Look for plunge-front swimsuits with convertible straps so it can be worn how you like it, over the shoulders or cross-back." BODY TYPE: HOURGLASS "If you have an hourglass, then draw attention to your perfectly proportioned shape with swimsuits that feature an all-over print and vibrant colour.

52 | www.life-mags.com

"A halter neckline with a low plunge looks great and offers support." BODY TYPE: PEAR "If you have a pear shape, instead of hiding your bottom with bikini shorts, flatter your shape by opting for higher cuts, designed to make your legs look longer. "A dark or block colour swimsuit will also help to create a slimming effect and an hourglass silhouette." BODY TYPE: STRAIGHT "If you have a straighter shape, you need a curve creator! "Feminine details and frills are perfect for beautifully boosting your curves. "Also, look out for padded foam cups to give you a great round shape, Bardot necklines and cut out detailing at the front and back, to create a gorgeous silhouette."

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Vitamin vitality... By Penny Downes of PENNYFEATHERS Beauty, St Clements Vitamins, minerals, supplements and shakes are fast becoming regular routines for modern life. With the fast pace world we have found ourselves needing to use of supplements as they are a must to keep healthy, radiant and young. Our diets can be poor and with clean eating on the up our physical awareness is increasing and so is our demand for health, wellbeing and supplement support. Being deficient can lead to the body being unhealthy and a health problems which can show in numerous ways including skin issues, digestive issues and sleep issues. Gut health plays a major part in our wellbeing, after all we are what we eat. Over 70 years ago the relationship between gut flora and health was recognised and is fast becoming a new trend in health, beauty and wellbeing. As we become more weary of prescribed medication for problems like eczema and acne and their side effects our minds turn too a more holistic approach including diet and supplement useage. Gut flora can become out of sync very easily through poor diet, stress, illness and modern life. This inbalance can then trigger reactions within the bodies system as they become toxic which in turn create an external problem shown on the skin. The use of pre and pro biotic supplements help restore good but flora and help aid in the body healing itself. Fermented food also helps the gut work better and enable the body to run in a healthy state. It is recommend that fermented food should be consumed regularly to active a healthy gut.

54 | www.life-mags.com

As Females our mineral needs are slightly different due to metabolic function, hormonal demands and bone mass difference to ones that a male would need. Due to these functions our bodies can become deficient in magnesium, calcium, vitamin D iron, zinc and iodine very easily. All can be boosted easily through healthy eating but boosted quicker and more efficiently through supplement taking. As a Male you can also lack zinc and vitamin D but can also be lacking in Vitamin C and selenium. All these help to promote health in men but keeping the endocrine system functioning correctly. Again supplements are the quick way of boosting and easy for on the go life styles. As we look further Into general vitamin and mineral needs for a healthy body key one come up time and time again to make us see that a healthy body needs a set of build blocks to function and grow. By just taking a daily multi vitamin containing vitamin E, C, A, zinc, calcium, B12 and anti oxidants you don't just increase your general health but help to protect your eyes, increase healthy hair and nail growth, reduce the signs of ageing and boost immunity. Overall we all need a little help from time to time especially in a modern world where food takes a back seat and stress jumps in the front. Vitamins give vitality not just to the body but can help your mind too after all a healthy mind can bring a healthy body. www.penny-feathers.co.uk

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

According the British Dentistry Association 1 in 4 People are scared of visiting the Dentist “With the best dentistry in the world available to islanders is it the same for us” Mark Shields Investigates... It’s true. A Recent Survey by the British Dental Association Found that 25% of people were scared of visiting the dentist. In fact you can double that amount for people that suffer with some form of anxiety when sitting in the dentist chair.

What is Dental Phobia? According to the American Psychiatric Association a phobia is described as an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation.

Jersey is renound for excellent dental care although equally famous for the cost of the treatment in many cases.

In most cases the phobia involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm. In the case of Dental Phobia this is a fear of being trapped in a situation where they feel unsafe and may be harmed physically.

Recently a client of mine was faced with a bill of £60,000 although she knew well in advance this was the cost of her treatment and her trust fund financed the deal accordingly. Is it the same for Islanders? Surprisingly the statistics are consistent with the UK in the Channel Islands with 1 in four islanders scared of visiting their dentist commonly blaming cost as the reason they don’t go as frequently as they should.

People suffering with this normally worry weeks in advance of their appointment and sometimes when it comes to it can’t go or

Even top quality and highly reputable dental care isn’t enough to stop people worrying. This proves it isn’t the dentists themselves that cause the fear but the patient’s perception of what is going to happen to them that is to blame. Other people’s horror stories combined with a fear of the unknown certainly don’t help. In fact it is said that 1 in 10 of us some 10% suffer with a dental phobia and can’t go as a result. continues overleaf... 56 | www.life-mags.com

even request a general anaesthetic to avoid putting themselves the feelings of dread and fear they are so terrified of experiencing. What are The Symptoms of Dentistry Phobia? Common Symptoms include: • Panic • Anxiety • Sweating • Breathlessness In some cases depending on the severity of the fear symptoms can escalate into a full blown anxiety attack. Once experiencing something like this some individuals struggle to visit the dentist again, let alone get back in the chair and may need professional help to get them through. I think it is important to recognise like anything we can experience different levels of fear depending on our experience For example the patients that experience pain are far less likely to want to go again as they build up a fear of not wanting to experience the same pain again. Some people who rarely go often experience a fear of the unknown as they often can’t recall their last visit. Common reasons behind the fear: • Fear of needles • Fear of the dentist drill • Lack of control • Feeling trapped and vulnerable Treatment for dental phobia • Choose your dentist well. Go to a dentist that has treated friends and family successfully. This will inspire you and give you confidence which will help combat the fear. • Share the fear and experience with others. Although a difficult discussion point you will find some of your colleagues and friends will have the same fear. Find out which dentist they use and learn how they overcame their fear. • Participating in decisions about your treatment can give you a feeling of control that can help you to feel less anxious. • To help lower your anxiety during the appointment, ask your dentist to explain what's happening at every stage of the procedure. When you know what the dentist is

58 | www.life-mags.com

about to do next, you can prepare yourself and you won't be taken by surprise. • You may feel embarrassed to discuss your fears. Remember that you are not alone. Fears are not uncommon. Once your dentist knows what the issues are, he or she will be better able to find workable solutions. • One way to reduce stress during a dental appointment is to distract yourself with something more pleasant. Some dentists provide headphones (or you can bring your own) so you can listen to music. • Learn some effective relaxation techniques. When you're tense or upset, your body releases “stress chemicals," such as adrenaline. These chemicals cause a variety of physical responses. Your muscles tighten, you breathe faster, and the pain receptors in your brain become more sensitive. These reactions themselves can make you feel more fearful and anxious. • Hypnosis is excellent when dealing with phobias of any kind. Hypnosis is simply a technique that creates a profound state of relaxation. The effects of hypnosis are similar to the effects of meditation, and you may be able to practice on your own. Some people with dental phobia sometimes ask their Hypnotherapist to accompany them to the dentist's chair and hypnotise them when they are having their treatment. • NLP is also very successful when dealing with phobias. It works by re programming the original cause and subsequent experience of the phobia simply by implanting your desired experience and outcome into the unconscious mind. For any further information on the article or how to deal with phobias call Mark Shields... Mark Shields Author, Mentor, Trainer, Coach Jersey office 01462431112 www.nlpcourseschannelislands.com

Ultra high net worths: how a changing market spurs advisors to adapt Richard Tribe, Head of Equiom Private Office, discusses the evolving needs of ultra high net worth individuals and the growing requirement for a more global service... As an international professional services provider, Equiom has been serving multi-generational families for decades and we have seen some dramatic changes to client behaviours over the years. Most notably there has been a shift in attitudes of the very wealthy, from a focus on wealth protection for future generations to more immediate, material desires – a luxurious lifestyle involving expensive cars, multiple properties, private jets or yachts. This development is particularly true for previously under developed and unstable countries. The wealthy of these nations were traditionally humble people who wanted the best for their offspring, with many sending their children to be educated in the UK and US where they often settled. This resulted in a dispersion of wealthy families located across the globe and created the need for family offices with a true multi-jurisdictional reach. The ultra high net worth (UHNW) populations have shifted geographically over the years and today’s global picture is quite different. According to Knight Frank’s 2019 Global Wealth Report, the UK and the US are still home to many of the world’s wealthy. Europe has the highest number of ultra high net worth individuals with the United States second, followed closely by Asia. However, the highest rate of growth in the UHNW population is predicted in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. The five-year growth forecast for UHNWIs in these regions is more than 30%, compared to the historically more prominent regions such as North America and the majority of Europe, where predicted growth in this population remains under 25%. More and more countries have adopted the materialistic way of life. This is becoming apparent with a richer population in previously less developed countries,

60 | www.life-mags.com

such as China and India which are among the fastest growing populations for wealthy individuals. Investment behaviours have changed too. The traditional model of investing in a conservative stock portfolio is rarely seen as the norm these days. Developments in technology over the years have opened doors to more sophisticated cross-border investment opportunities, and it is not uncommon to find UHNWIs holding a diverse range of assets, comprising, for example, real estate (both long-term investment and development projects globally), interests in start-up or well-established trading entities, artwork and antiquities, and cryptocurrency. In respect of offshore structures, the ever-changing international tax laws mean that traditional service providers need to be flexible and incorporate the very best tax and legal advice to ensure the solution not only meets the needs of the client, but is also fit for purpose. For trusts nowadays there are more limited tax advantages. However, the fundamental purposes of asset protection, succession planning and confidentiality are still extremely important and are now seen as the main driver for such wealth planning. In markets such as the Middle East and Asia we have seen much greater interest in private trust companies (PTCs) over the last 12-18 months, as clients can retain a certain amount of control over their assets while still achieving the aforementioned objectives. As the world gets smaller, commercial experience and technical knowledge in local jurisdictions is essential. With offices around the world, Equiom has access to a team of specialists across Europe, the US, Middle East and Asia and our premium service, Equiom Private Office aims to help individuals and families by adapting to market needs to ultimately achieve that ‘trusted advisor’ status. Shorts Boy Distillery launches Jersey’s first Rum JERSEY’S FIRST RUM HAS BEEN LAUNCHED. THE TIDAL RUM IS INFUSED WITH PEPPER DULSE SEAWEED, KNOWN AS THE TRUFFLE OF THE SEA, HAND-HARVESTED FROM THE RICH SUBMERGED ‘FLOWER BEDS’ OF OUR LOCAL WATERS. Produced by Jersey-based Shorts Boy Distillery (SBD) this blend of four golden Caribbean rums captures the distinctive maritime flavours of Jersey by infusing the mix with lightly smoked Pepper Dulse. As the name suggests, The Tidal Rum is very much Islandborn and is the first rum to come out of Jersey. SBD worked with Lewis Moberly to produce The Tidal Rum’s individual branding. The beautiful glass bottle is defined by its gently sloping shoulders and solid wooden stopper. Graphics are simple and reflect the strong connection between island living, the power of the tide and the influence of the sea truffle. The Tidal Rum is a collaboration between friends Ben Clyde-Smith and Harry Coulthard. Both grew up living by the sea and developed a passion for all things maritime. They have sampled rums across the world returning to the sea for their inspiration. The Tidal Rum evokes the subtle coastal flavours they know and love.

64 | www.life-mags.com

Commenting on the launch, Harry Coulthard said, “We wanted to create a refined rum with a subtle taste of the sea with hints of tide and seaboard impressing the palate with each glug.” Ben Clyde-Smith added, “Our unique flavour profile sets Tidal Rum apart. Drink it on the rocks or in your favourite rum cocktail. You will love that fresh seagoing vibe.” Following a successful soft launch at Streetlife Festival in April, The Tidal Rum is now available at LoveWine or online at tidalrum.je. SBD has ambitions to create a range of beverages inspired by the sea and cask finish a batch in the near future.

HISTORY

Marooned: A Jersey Shipwreck Story In 1748, Jean Hamon survived a month on Les Minquiers. Paul Darroch imagines his story. It looks like paradise, but this place burns like hell. My mouth’s been a desert for weeks, parched and sickly. My tongue swelled up during my first night here on the reef – and even now, after all the precious raindrops I’ve caught in ormer shells – the pain will not ease. I shiver day and night on these forsaken rocks, without fire or food, as my stomach tightens and my ribs poke from stretched skin. Day and night, the gulls screech their symphony, and the seas churn as roughly as my addled mind. I was crewman on a cargo ship, heading north west from St Malo. They called it Marett’s wine boat; a St Aubin’s vessel bearing barrels of French claret and some choice cuts of cheese. It was a foul winter’s morning when we set to sea; we poured ourselves tots of rum for luck as we sped out of that grey stone port, and France receded into the horizon. Six miles from land, a black cloudbank ambushed us. It was the funnel of a storm, and we lurched towards the razor rocks of Les Minquiers. It was too late to turn, and with a sickening screech, our boat broke clean in two. I can scarcely remember the rest of the ordeal: the splintering of the hull, the icy shock of seawater, the submerged rocks that bruised me as I struggled for air. I cannot recall how I floundered my way to solid ground. I do remember that as I crawled, shivering and bloody, onto the sandbanks of Les Minquiers, I was utterly alone. A winter’s night was falling, and I had no shelter or sustenance. I slumped into a deathly exhausted sleep. I awoke to find myself in a graveyard. During the night, the bodies of the dead had been washed up all about me on the reef. I ripped off their shirts, so I could build a better windbreak against the icy storm. Then I buried my friends in the wet sand, with a headstone to mark their passing. The work left me weak and thirsty, but the leaden skies refused to rain. Imagine my joy when a leather flask of water washed up at my feet, along with a pot of French honey to sustain me. The ship that bore them was matchwood now, but its keel remained wedged in a sandbank. At the lowest tidemark, I stole up there to plunder what I could. I rescued a wooden pitchfork and tied a shirt to it; hoisting it like a flag on the tallest rock. This is the speck they call Maîtresse Île, the mistress island.

68 | www.life-mags.com

And here I established my kingdom. Les Minquiers, they say, were once fields as fat and fair as Jersey, before the seas rose and drowned them. Now here they lie; a fool’s kingdom of sand bars. Then the tide floods in, leaving just a long stony ridge and a turquoise lagoon. Such are the boundaries of my prison. My days have become weeks, but I carry no timepiece. I scratch notches on a rock to measure my solitude. I sleep in the shadow of the rocks, and more than once the incoming tide sweeps me awake. I stutter out nightly prayers, for my life, for mercy; for my friends. A month limps by; and suddenly I spy a ship, some three miles out. It’s a clear February day, and the winter sun is low in the sky. I scream and dance and wave my sail-cloth like a court jester. I can see the stick-men on the deck as close as if I might touch them. But then the schooner turns away into the dusk. I sob right through my darkest and loneliest night. But the next morning, as the stars wane, a shadow falls in the first glow of daylight. Then there’s the cry of a watchman, the crash of an anchor, and my cage springs open. Paul Darroch is the author of Jersey: The Hidden Histories, which tells the story of Jersey’s rich and colourful history in the style of a novel. It is available widely across Jersey and on Amazon UK.

Bentley has created a unique, Limited Edition model that pays homage to the legendary No. 1 Bentley Blower of 1929. The Continental GT Convertible Number 1 Edition by Mulliner is a modern interpretation of a truly iconic racing car, and features 18 carat gold plated fender badging and a remarkable piece of history, cast from a piston from the original No.1, set within the innovative Bentley Rotating Display. Based on the Bentley Continental GT Convertible, the world’s definitive open-top Grand Tourer, the Number 1 Edition is restricted to just 100 bespoke examples. Handcrafted in England during Bentley’s centenary year, the exhilarating open-top model contains exquisite design elements that celebrate some of the pioneering individuals from the marque’s first 100 years. The Number 1 Edition showcases a range of bespoke features that encapsulate the spirit of a golden era of motorsport. Available in either Dragon Red II or Beluga, and with a Claret or Beluga folding hood, the Limited Edition is equipped with a Centenary Pack, Bentley Black Line Specification and Carbon Body Kit, rounded off by the painted Number 1 front grille. At the heart of the Number 1 Edition sits an enhanced version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine. Just like the original, supercharged Blower of 1929, it provides exhilarating and agile performance, representing the pinnacle of contemporary car design. Number 1 Edition – A Modern Interpretation of a Classic The new Continental GT Convertible Number 1 Edition by Mulliner encapsulates Bentley’s remarkable spirit of achievement during the last century. It was first experienced in 1932 at the Brooklands racing circuit, near London, when the original, supercharged No. 1 ‘Blower’ set a thrilling lap record. The new Number 1 Edition harks back to that remarkable vehicle, a car that is responsible for some of the most memorable moments in Bentley’s illustrious past. Just 100 examples will be made during the Crewe-based marque’s centenary year, further enhancing the Number 1 Edition’s exclusivity. A painted Number 1 front grille is complemented with an 18 carat gold plated fender badge, jewelled filler and oil caps, and 22-inch MDS wheels in either Cricket Ball or Gloss Black finish. Inside, a new colour split of either Cricket Ball or Beluga main hide is complemented by Heritage hide on the seats and door pads, with a debossed B insignia on the headrests and door inserts. The Grand Black wood veneer is enhanced by 18 carat gold plated organ stops and an Alcantara steering wheel and gear lever. Passengers are welcomed by a Number 1 treadplate insert as they step into a luxurious cabin. As well as a British Jaeger clock featuring a Number 1 face, the uniquely crafted dashboard also incorporates Engine Spin on the centre console. Often referred to as ‘Turned Aluminium’, Engine Spin was a popular racing car and aviation finish in the 1920s and ‘30s as it limited light reflection. Races in the original No. 1 were always adventure-packed and exciting. The Number 1 Edition features an enhanced version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine, mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission for faster, more efficient gear changes. The state-of-the-art drivetrain offers a powerful and exhilarating drive, as thrilling as that produced by the original No. 1 when it first took to the racetrack all those years ago.

JULY WINE 2019:Layout 1 01/07/2019 07:09 Page 1

WINE

Natural Wine by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant

Over the past five years there has been a significant increase in demand for natural wines. But as there is no official classification for natural wine, it is somewhat confusing for the consumer

WHERE DID IT START? A wine grower in Beaujolais is widely regarded as the father of natural wine. Jules Chauvet’s desire to make purer better wine without the use of chemicals at all, either in the vineyard or during the winemaking process, inspired another young wine grower in the Beaujolais region, Marcel Lapierre, to meet with him in 1981. Although Jules Chauvet had been making his natural wine for decades, it was not until his meeting with Marcel Lapierre that a natural wine movement emerged. HOW TO DEFINE NATURAL WINE Natural wine is not easily defined but in general it is made with organically grown grapes whereby the use of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals is prohibited in the vineyard. All grapes must be harvested by hand, no machine picking is permitted. During the winemaking process no yeasts or bacteria can be added, no acidity adjustment can be made and the addition of sugar, sometimes used to increase alcoholic strength is also outlawed. The use of finings such as egg whites or gelatin is banned and filtration and pumping equipment is not allowed. Natural winemakers allow fermentation to proceed without the addition of yeast and the natural settling of sediment before bottling is the only clarification process used. The use of sulphur dioxide remains a grey area but no SO2 should be added during the fermentation process but if used it must be “minimal”. During the bottling process, the same “regulations” apply, minimal or no sulphur dioxide (SO2) should be used. STORAGE AND SULPHITES The avoidance of new oak barrels by natural winemakers is important, many practitioners opting to use large older barrels and others fermenting their wine in concrete or clay containers, thus avoiding the influence of wood on the aromas and taste. The use of other vessels for fermentation such as terra cotta amphorae is also being experimented with. Whether or not the winemaker decides to use sulphur dioxide at any stage of the winemaking or bottling process, natural wines will always contain sulphites, as this is a naturally occurring by-product of fermentation. HEALTHIER In theory natural wine is healthier for you because it is made with organically grown grapes whereby its practices forbid the use of chemicals in the vineyard. Just as organically grown fruit and vegetables with fewer or no chemical intervention, the product is safer for you and of course, the environment. The natural winemaker’s choice not to use any added yeast and to only harvest manually does not, however, have any impact on the health properties of natural wine AGEING AND APPEARANCE Do not expect natural wine to age as long as conventionally made wine because the addition of sulphites is a major part of what helps to preserve wine. The appearance of some natural wines can be quite different to that of “regular” wine and often natural wine can be cloudy and the aromas can be quite different to what one might expect. Whilst sediment can appear in most wines, it is definitely more prolific in natural wines. AVAILABILITY AND PRICE Natural wine is produced in most wine producing countries and they will also have a group of Natural Wine Producers. In France, notably in Beaujolais and the Loire Valley there are many natural wine makers also in Italy, Spain and USA there are official bodies promoting them. There is usually no difference in price for natural wine and it is becoming more and more accessible worldwide. The Natural Wine Movement has grown and even got some of its winemakers reconsidering the use of sulphur dioxide and even the introduction of oak to improve their wines. Unfortunately, the term “natural” has the consequence of implying that all other wines are somehow unnatural.

If you're new to Taffy Brodesser-Akner, know that she is quite brilliant. Formerly at American GQ, she now writes major profiles for the New York Times Magazine (find her one on Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop immediately). Fleishman Is In Trouble is her debut novel, and it has all the wit, sharpness and perceptive intelligence of her magazine pieces, and yet it is also intense, ferocious and gets inside you like you would not believe. Toby (a liver specialist) and Rachel (an incredibly successful talent agent) are in the midst of divorce, following many years of resentment, throwing stuff and hostility over money. Their kids - sweet, thoughtful Solly and exacting tween Hannah - are caught in the middle. And then Rachel goes missing. What ensues is no dark crime thriller, but a powerful examination of marriage, dating apps, suburbia, crushing ennui, parenthood and what happens when you feel as though who you are as a person has been stretched so thinly by your family, lover, career, and the burden of playing the game and fitting in - that suddenly, nothing makes sense anymore. It also stirs the muddy waters of womanhood, and the burden of believing we can have it all. An addictive, provoking, astute read. Fleishman Is In Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner is published in hardback by Wildfire, priced £18.99 (ebook £7.99). Available now. Review by Ella Walker.
