June….already! And where is the sunshine…certainly not here on the day I am penning this… But of course we always carry the sunshine in our hearts and within these pages (not to be too clichéd).
Café Zephyr invited me to talk about their new season’s menu just hot off the press and I have done so with great gusto on page 20…Enjoy! Eating OUT, Lorraine Pannetier and recipe are all in the foodie mix as is Beresford Street Kitchen, extoling the virtues of hiring the wonderful BSK team for catering.
Well what do we have for you? An interview with Ivor Barrette for one. He recently sat in my office for just shy of an hour and waxed lyrical about his horses, carriages, marriages and trips to the UK. Endlessly fascinating.
Painting and decorating, window privacy, home office and gardening are all subjects covered with great aplomb in our home section…so a huge variety in the mixing pot this month.
Suzi Webb Wellness is the topic for our health and beauty section with a re-launch of her business and look at where she is since the sad departure from this mortal coil of her newly wedded husband…Suzi shared her sorrows and joys with me on page 54.
Next month is all about sun, fun, beach and bodies!!! That’s if the sunshine ever deigns to turn up… Have a good one
Motoring this month takes a turn with Ferraris’ first PHEV SF90 Stradale and wine takes us into the realms of Bordeaux and climate change! Love Food As spring turns to summer, local producers are pulling out all the stops and filling our shelves with fresh seasonal produce. From juicy tomatoes to crispy salads and freshly dug Royals we are spoilt for choice on an Island just nine by five. Genuine Jersey are firm advocates of embracing the local produce on offer and are proud to represent and support businesses with this shared ethos. The annual Potato Growing Competition, social media campaign #whatsonmyplatejersey this June and the association’s support for the returning ‘Jersey Eat Local Challenge’ are just a few examples of Genuine Jersey’s work to support our Island’s producers. Championing local produce for over two decades, Genuine Jersey are delighted to welcome new producers to the community
each year. CEO of the association, John Garton, has seen an increase in consumers interest in locally grown and responsibly sourced food and believes that farmers and growers are stepping up to the mark to meet this demand. In recent years, the association has welcomed new start-ups such as Minioti and Jersey Sea Salt and have seen long-standing members such as Classic Herd push the boundaries to keep with the times. You may have seen their latest instalment, the milk vending machine, which aims to reduce plastic waste. With a strong community of passionate and knowledgeable local farmers, Jersey agriculture rarely stands still. Becky Houze from Lodge Farm has been working with new technologies, such as CowManagers or ‘Cow fitbits’, to enhance the running of the farm and this year Mourant Farm
reduced their use of plastic crop covers by 10%. Another Genuine Jersey member who aren’t afraid of embracing change is Douet Farm. Louise and Lawrence Agnes are set to launch their exciting new venture this summer, where they will be veering away from the traditional Jersey cow and introducing dairy produce made from goats milk. Working tirelessly during the quieter winter months to build their new milking parlour and dairy processing rooms, the pair are keen to share their new products with both locals and visitors to the Island. Local produce is wildly available across the Island, from road side stalls to supermarkets such as the Co-op and Waitrose and the red Genuine Jersey logo is a guarantee of local provenance.

INTERVIEW
Ivor’s Passion… Who doesn’t know the Barrette’s of St. Mary Jersey! I’d known the name and even spoken to Ivor on the phone a few times, so was intrigued to meet the man I’d known from afar for so many years in person, when he recently popped into my office at Hill Street to tell me a little about himself….by Juanita Shield-Laignel I began by asking Ivor about his childhood in the island. “I’m a Jersey boy through and through. I was brought up on a farm…well, where I am now, and in those days we still had a farm horse. My father was very keen on horses and when I was about ten he got me a pony. I had a little 12’2 pony and then I went all the way through pony club and then I had a bigger one and so on, so I have ridden all my life. I had to get up at 6:30am and
muck out, clean tackle and feed them…much the same as now really.” “When I left school we were still using the farm horse for planting potatoes. I had no ambition other than to be a successful farmer so went straight into the farm when I left school. Farming was in my blood. Over the years we had cows and pigs and of course the potatoes. In those days we used to collect waste food from the hotels but they’re not allowed to do that anymore because of disease!” “Farming took up most of my time but I eventually met my first wife in my late twenties…she was working at the JEC at the time. She wasn’t that keen on farming but we had four lovely children all who are now grown up and I am immensely proud of. None of them have the farm in their bones like me, but my daughter loves the horses. She’s a Lawyer but still finds time for them. My sons on the other-hand are each into their own thing; one’s a mechanic, another a contractor for the States and the third one is a builder.” “Luckily my wife now, of 12 years, Carole really loves the horses as does my step-daughter and both of them are part of the team when we go away to County Shows. Carole still works as a nurse and helps with the horses in her spare time.”

INTERVIEW
“So I’ve long since given up the cows and the pigs I only do the horses now, I say it’s like a hobby that’s turned into a business, a passion that pays for itself!” “I have ten or twelve different carriages, 2 or 3 wedding carriages, the Jersey Van a couple of exercise carriages as I don’t like to use the old traditional ones for everyday use, and the Coach. We go to the UK with a team of four to at least 2 or 3 County Shows every year. We were recently at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and came fifth. The next one will be August. We were supposed to be away the weekend just gone but not all of the team were available at the same time. They’ve all got their own lives and families so we have to make sure we are all available to travel at the same time to do a show. We have a lorry that takes the horses and has living accommodation for us and then another vehicle that houses the carriage we need for the event, so we are quite the entourage when we go. The driving team usually consists of me, my wife Carole, my step-daughter Kirsten, she loves it, and then Ian le Marquand helps with the tackle, as do I. They’ve got to be spotless…both the carriages and the horses. I’ve five that I use already; Duke and King, Bill and Ben and Denis, and 3 youngsters to break in. When we are at the stage of putting them on the road, they learn from the older horses like a school master!” “I don’t breed them myself, so my youngsters are all Dutch. They come from Holland and are all black with white socks so they are all matched when they are on the carriages. It is quite a spectacular sight. For the shows we tend to use white
accessories but of course change the colours according to what the bride wants if we are doing a wedding.” “They all have their Dutch names in their passports and the breeders give them a new letter of the alphabet with the start of each new year…hence Bill and Ben and then Duke and Denis. The Dutch names were something like Deftig and Dineth and when I bought Denis, a good friend of mine had just died that year, so I named my new horse after him. They are all boys because they get on better that way…if I throw a girl in the pot it causes havoc as you can imagine.” continues overleaf...

INTERVIEW
“I do weddings, funerals, birthdays, general carriage rides booked in advance and of course the shows. I love it. It’s my life. I don’t have time for any other hobbies. Our dogs, Butch and Codie come everywhere with us too.” I was interested to know if Ivor has much competition in the island. “I am the only one in the island doing it. We are facilitating a funeral on Friday from Grouville to St. Thomas’s Church and then up to the Crematorium. I guess we are asked to do 2 or 3 funerals a month. We had a wedding last Saturday at the L'horizon then to St. Ouen’s Parish Church then down to St. Ouen’s bay for photos. The horses are so well behaved, even when they have to wait around for seemingly hours whilst photos are taken. They seem to know they are working so they won’t eat or if someone offers them a drink they won’t drink whilst they are working. They are so intelligent.” Ivor’s love for what he does seemed to be radiating from his face as he was talking; I said as much, “I do enjoy it…not so much on a rainy day. We get really wet some days, there is a hood on the carriage for the bride and groom but the driver and groom aren’t covered. We had a wedding last year when it poured down with rain and we got absolutely soaking.” “As much as I love it, there are down sides. They do get ill from time to time. I remember a while back Denis was ill. We had a wedding and he was breathing very heavily. The vet thought he had pneumonia and gave him antibiotics; he had a scope down his throat, but there was no fluid on his lungs and ultra sound in his stomach. The vet bill wasn’t very pretty so in the end we just put him out in the field and he got better himself. I think he must have had a virus. So the constant costs are demanding…vets bills, feed, a farrier every six to eight weeks and so much more, it’s never ending.” Tongue in cheek, I asked Ivor if he is a ‘Horse Whisperer’? He grinned and said, “Secretly I can talk to them you know.
14 | www.life-mags.com
They all know me. They are so intelligent they know who their boss is and who feeds them, they have a pecking order… they know whose boss amongst them. They are herding animals; always want to be together. If I put them out in the field but keep two in to use the next day, they call each other.” I wanted to know if Ivor thinks they show emotion. “Definitely, they do show emotion. We had an old one that was a bit sick it must have been 24 or 25 and the vet came to put him down and all the others were lined up against the bank in the other field, they knew something was wrong.” I wanted to know if Ivor has any intention of retiring any time soon. “There is always something to do. It keeps me busy. Everyday I’m up early feed them, there’s always harnesses to clean or vehicles to clean or getting the Herse ready for a funeral and they get ridden occasionally. I’ve got a big barn to keep all the carriages in and there is upkeep on the buildings too. And I take them out for exercise every day 7 or 8 miles a day, sometimes 10. The majority of cars slow down and are understanding - on the whole, about 80% I’d say. There is always a few that have no time to wait or think you should not be on the road in the first place but horses built the road when you think about it. So I intend doing it for as long as I can. I enjoy it so I’m not going to retire any time soon.” And as if to punctuate that sentiment Ivor’s phone started belting out ‘je ne regrette rien’… After Ivor had taken a brief call, in conclusion I asked him to tell me if any of the horses had any funny quirks he’d like to share? “They all love polo mints! I saw this big packet of ‘loops’ similar to polos at the pound shop and gave them to the horses. There is one that takes his mint out my mouth…it’s our party trick if you like… he loves them so much, I gave him one of the loops and he spat it out. He knew the difference.” On that note we had a giggle and I shook Ivor’s hand and thanked him for coming in and telling me all about his passions…

Eating
Out…
We all enjoy sitting out in the fresh air whatever the time of day and sharing a meal and maybe even a good bottle of wine with family and friends. Of course we’ve all been eating out doors for years with picnics and barbeques and there are many creative recipe books around to reflect this. Local supermarkets are also jumping on the band-wagon and stocking a plethora of brightly coloured plastic plates and cups, outdoor games and lots of other things to make open air eating as practical as possible…by Juanita Shield-Laignel There is also a continuing upsurge of copying our Mediterranean counterparts and alfresco offerings are now dotted about our

town and what a choice there is. You can find almost any type of restaurant or café and know that some sort of outdoor experience can be had. From simple afternoon tea to sophisticated fine dining, most meals of the day can be enjoyed in the fresh air and often, thankfully in these southerly climes, in the sunshine. There was a time when few restaurants provided outdoor dining but now the growing trend for enjoying the great outdoors dictates that tables and chairs are crammed onto almost every pavement sometimes in seemingly tiny spaces but nevertheless, in most cases, to great effect.

ALFRESCO
We really are very spoilt for choice here in Jersey with every corner of our glorious Island catered for; Gorey, St Brelade, St Ouen, St Aubin, The Waterfront to name just a few and what could be better than sipping a nice cold beer whilst listening to the waves lapping a few yards away? Our beloved Gorey with its very own particular brand of quirkiness caters well for tourists and locals alike. Home to one of our most striking Heritage sites, a full day in the area is needed so refreshments will most definitely be required and every need catered for. Sitting outside eating a meal at Bonne Nuit is particularly enjoyable especially when the tide is creeping up the tiny golden, sandy bay. The sound of the waves lapping coupled with the occasional clinking of masts and ropes on the swaying boats, adds a restful backdrop. At this time of year you may even be lucky enough to see the comical resident ducks waddling up the slip followed by a neat line of tiny, fluffy ducklings and at almost any time you can see canoeists launching from the sand and fishermen trundling down in rusty old Range Rovers to awaiting out-boarded wooden boats. Such a small bay and yet so much going on. Another of our quaint bays is Rozel, different to Bonne Nuit but equally charming. Whether you sit out and sink your teeth into a bacon bap with a large mug of builder’s tea or choose to enjoy a more refined three course meal, the same picturesque view will be on display for you. In contrast the ever popular bustling St Aubin has a wealth of bars, restaurants and cafés enough in fact to eat somewhere different each night of the week and with the truly inspiring, ever changing view of the scenic old harbour and St Aubin’s Fort beyond, is well worth a visit. There really is so much to see and do in St Aubin and almost every cuisine is catered for, I recently enjoyed a great night out with a group of girlfriends at The Muddy Duck; the seabass was delicious and the atmosphere was great and the staff went to great lengths ensuring everyone was looked after. Coupled with a range of clothes, antique and gift shops, St Aubin has managed to maintain its village feel over the years and what

better way to celebrate village life than with regular village fairs in the form of both the Genuine Jersey Fair, one to be held once a month and the ever popular Vintage Fair, visited by many and loved by all who do. St Aubin really has its own flair, almost its own little eco-system full of diversity, a social hub for evenings out and an enticement for day time shoppers. St Brelade bay is much the same, bustling with activity of every kind if you wish to be involved, or the more sedate may prefer to saunter along the promenade soaking up the atmosphere and stop at one of many bars, restaurants or cafés to enjoy one of a great selection of meals alfresco. Stunning views gives the ‘foodie’ a chance to watch the world go by and linger over langoustine in garlic butter whilst deciding which of the bay’s many activities to indulge in later; or not. Although it is wonderful to go out and enjoy good food, good company and divine scenery, some of these things can be done at home. Dress up your home with a few extra cushions, rugs and pretty bunting, co-ordinate or clash, whichever takes your fancy with brightly coloured, funky, bespoke outdoor eating, plastics and you’ve got a winning combination. Again with so much local choice we truly are spoilt. So whether you find yourself soaping down your plastic garden furniture, hanging pretty bunting around your patio and firing up the barbeque or packing a picnic of rich summer foods, or quaffing your favourite tipple on the streets of St Helier, or…sitting by one of our glorious beaches… make the most of the warmer weather and eat outdoors whenever and wherever possible…enjoy!

NEW SEASON, NEW MENU AT
Café Zephyr… Review by Juanita Shield-Laignel For reasons which I shan’t bore you with in detail, but for the betterment of his health, my husband was recently advised by his GP to adopt a low GI diet and even cut out carbs completely for a short period to ensure significant weight loss. Quite independently but around the same time, I had come across the work of Suzanne Peirce Thompson Ph.D., who talks about what she calls, Bright Line Eating; the principle being that like an alcoholic who decides to get clean will draw a clear, bright, line under alcohol and avoid it all costs for fear of falling off the wagon, so too people who struggle with weight, or who are not in a ‘right sized body’, should draw a clear, bright, line under certain things, including sugar and flour. This struck a deep cord with me, knowing I am gluten intolerant (a subject for another article) but cheating by living gluten free in the main but allowing myself maybe a croissant on a Sunday, or a slice of cake at a garden centre on a Saturday afternoon, or pizza at an Italian restaurant with my 2 boys and so on…in effect being the worst kind of gluten intolerant subscriber! Suzanne’s words switched a light on for me and I knew the only way, if I was every going to get a grip on both my weight and some of my long standing health issues, I just had to bright line wheat. NO MORE CHEATING…. To add to all of the above, my long term vegetarian husband (since he was 9) recently announced he was also giving up his beloved, last bastions of dairy consumption; cheese and chocolate (having not liked cream, butter and eggs since childhood) and became vegan. Having two vegetarian sons and now a vegan husband, I have long since given up cooking meat and consequently lost the appetite for it, but still enjoy fish when I go out and eat a small amount of cheese, yoghurt and eggs.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU ALL OF THIS? Because this complicated set of eating criteria had almost precluded us from ever going out to eat again! Or so it seemed until the team at The Royal Yacht invited me to write a review on Café Zephyr. Having written one last year, I was excited about it, but put our dietary needs to the team and they consequently sent me a copy of the new menu, stating…this is exactly why getting the contents of their new and improved summer menu across, is so important. I was really pleased to see the menu is very clearly marked (V) – Vegetarian, (VG) – Vegan and (GF) - Gluten Free…brilliant! The Royal Yacht in their infinite wisdom, have realised that their clients want a variety of foods and too are imbued with many nuances of dietary desires, wants and needs and they were delighted for me to talk about this. So all was well and we turned up on one of the more inclement evenings we suffered at the end of May and were glad of a comfortable seat inside Café Zephyr. A bottle of wine was definitely in order (luckily there is no gluten in wine!!!) and we chose a middle-of-the-range ‘Boschendal’ a light-ish white, for mid-week drinking ease. As promised, there were plenty of things for both of us to choose from on the extensive menu. To start I went for ‘Baked Sweet Potato with Peanut, Pea, Spinach and Coconut sauce’ and my husband chose ‘Miso Aubergine with Sesame and Ginger’. They were both delicious; meat free, gluten free, low GI etc! Gluten free bread was also provided. Quite filling in and of themselves, our starters could have been a light supper on their own. Our host for the evening, Carolina astutely asked if we would like a small break before our main course. We gratefully accepted a ten minute break, giving us time to chat and note what was going on around us. A young couple to our left had ordered the most ginormous sharing seafood meal with a huge spider crab looming above their plates and several oysters secreted underneath and lots of other fishy delights….I’d have loved to have tucked into that, but my husband has a particular aversion to crab so that wasn’t going to happen, but it was lovey to see other people enjoying it. To our right, two gentlemen, looking very much like they were in business discussions, were just finishing a chicken curry platter and a huge steak and coiffing something bubby. A few tables away I spotted a friend of mine enjoying an early, light supper with some girlfriends and then a group of four young people arrived and sat to eat what looked like fish and chips, amongst other things.
20 | www.life-mags.com
Outside was also bustling despite the drizzle and cold air. Every other table was full and housed a host of different types of people from all walks of life and choosing diverse things from the menu including steak, sushi and poke bowls and of course enjoying a wide variety of drinks from the bar. Maître d for the evening, Joel, was busying himself ensuring everyone’s wants and needs were being met and he still found time to come across and make sure Carolina was looking after us properly. We reported that of course she was and doing a cracking job. And as if timed perfectly, Carolina arrived with our main courses; ‘Sea Bass with Lobster Sauce and Tiger Prawns’ for me and ‘Vegan Sri Lankan Curry’ for Alistair. Carolina had taken special care to tell chef I needed gluten free lobster sauce. Many sauces and soups are thickened with flour. There was a time when one couldn’t trust that flour wasn’t used in soups and sauces and there have been a few occasions when I’ve chosen to ignore that then suffered later. This seems to be a bygone experience and now restaurants and cafés are taking the culinary health needs of their customers seriously. Thank goodness! My sea bass was cooked to perfection. A lovely crispy skin, topped beautiful moist flakes of white flesh, surrounded by succulent tiger prawns on a bed of Jersey Royals and baby veg, with the Lobster Sauce garnishing the bottom of the bowl. My husband’s curry was equally perfect (yes I did try it…in the interests of being able to write about it of course) and he was pleased the rice was served in a separate bowl so he could choose how much or how little he wanted. This all paired very well with our wine. We also had a bottle of sparkling water on the table and Carolina gave us just the right amount of attention, topping up our drinks, in between looking after several other covers, and each time with a warm smile and helpful demeanour. I asked Carolina where she was from originally ‘Venezuela’ she told me and then proceeded to share that she was 20 and was working in Jersey to improve her English and gain life experience and that eventually she would like to be a Veterinarian. We thanked her very much for looking after us so well. Next it was time for dessert. Thinking the sugar content of most would be just one step too far, my husband declined dessert and instead opted for a large, hot, black, Americano. I decided to indulge in a raspberry Crème Brulee and was assured it was also gluten free. Yay – a gluten free dessert…not easy to come by! I asked if I could accompany this with a peppermint tea and Carolina was delighted to report that, yes, they do have an assortment of herbal teas and peppermint was definitely on the list. Dessert and coffee complete there was little need for us to stay, although, were it not a ‘school’ night, no doubt we’d have stayed longer, maybe enjoyed a nightcap or two on the terrace, basking in the warm glow of the patio heaters dotted about and sheltered from the wind a rain by the huge awning that ensures customer enjoyment all year round. I must admit the idea of a gluten free, meat free but alcohol laden, Amaretto Sour was very attractive, but my responsible mummy brain kicked in and I declined. Wending our way home in a constitutional walk through the streets of St Helier my husband and I agreed we’d very much enjoyed our evening together, the meal was very tasty, the wine a perfect accompaniment but best of all….both of us were pain free! The realisation that most meals out usually result in one or other of us being in physical pain afterwards, was quite a revelation and means we will definitely keep Café Zephyr on our list of ‘dietary safe’ places to go. Thank you Café Zephyr, The Royal Yacht, Joel and Carolina….a most enjoyable evening!
FOOD TOURS
The Taste of Jersey ON A FOODIE WALKING TOUR to put these together. You can be assured that it will all be local, sustainable and seasonal. Including Grouville Bay oysters is a must on the tour, fresh on ice with a squeeze of lemon or in tempura batter, both very different but the debate continues as to which is the best. Bream, mullet, mackerel, bass, skate, pollock have all also already been sampled this season. The mackerel is probably the best it has ever been, it’s so juicy and good for you too. We have had some succulent chancre topped with local foraged herbs served on homemade bruschetta. The difference between this and the sweet spider crab meat is striking.
Seafood week for Jersey Food Tours is just around the corner and foodies can expect the very best from Jersey’s fishermen. The sea surrounding our island is heaving with fabulous fish and shellfish. Take a Taste of Jersey walking food tour and you will eat the evidence! The Taste of Jersey Tour costs £45, it starts at 12:00, the meet up point is Longbeach Carpark, Gorey. The tour takes about 2 ½ hours; it is difficult to watch the time when you are eating and chatting! The 2 km walk is gentle, a few steps and a hill but always at a leisurely pace, the stops take in the best views of the East of Jersey and the coast of France. The eating starts straightaway while introductions over the delicious treats begin and continue through the tour so be sure to heed the advice of many of our 5-star reviews on Trip Advisor ‘Come hungry’. Some of the stops take place at selected local eateries (restaurants, delis and an ice cream shop) where the owners explain the dishes, the ingredients and why they are on the menu, in addition you can take the chance to add a glass (or more) of wine or beer to your experience. Every tour, and the tastes you will experience, changes: governed by the catch, which produce is at its best and how chef decides
Scallops, of course, feature, and only hand-dived will pass the chef’s test for sustainability. Often these are simply pan fried in local butter and served on local spinach although drizzled with rocket pesto has also been a favourite. We are looking forward to the local bouchot mussels in the coming weeks, they are grown a few hundred yards away from the oyster beds. Lobster has featured in bonbons and bisque but only the occasional courageous foodie has slurped down a whelk. Meat lovers shouldn’t worry, scotch eggs, pork pies, Grouville wood pigeon breast plus some juicy local pork belly served with local mushrooms, have all been on the menu in recent weeks. We have relished the intense flavour of baked Heritage Jersey tomatoes, a perfect accompaniment. To accompany these delicious flavours, we sample fresh Jersey Royal potatoes smothered in Jersey butter and sprinkled with local sea salt (the one flavoured with local dulce seaweed is a favourite). The jury is still out as to whether this year’s Royals for the East taste better than the Royals from the West. Walking, eating and chatting aids the digestion and makes room for sweet treats: Jersey wonders, Jersey Dairy ice-cream, crumbly fudge and plump local strawberries have been tasted along with black butter sometimes enjoyed with an accompanying glass of sloe gin or cider. There are several local cider producers and our foodies have tried them all! The walking is fun and satisfying too. Your entertaining, knowledgeable guide will lead you through the country lanes and coastal paths of Gorey past the oyster beds, potato cotils and famous castle. Most of the chat is food related, of course, but with a little history and fun anecdotes thrown in. All of the foods experienced whilst walking are created by members of Genuine Jersey. This gives assurance that you are eating local produce and supporting the Jersey food industry as well as keeping food-miles to a minimum! It is always more satisfying to know that your meal was created from ingredients on and around this fertile, sunny island. Arrive hungry – leave happy.

HEALTH AND WELL BEING
The Art of Slow Living Back in the early 1990s, a young woman fell in love with food shopping. With the luxury of a full time job, she enjoyed hours of carefree browsing along every aisle of the local Sainsbury’s or Tesco superstore, filling the trolley with everything she and her boyfriend desired. Experimentation in the kitchen led to the discovery of a natural gift for pairing ingredients with spices and herbs to create delicious meals, all washed down with a glass or two of local fruit-based wine. She was living the dream…. or so she thought. In case you hadn’t already guessed, that woman was me. In the twenty-something years since, that passion for food, flavours and seasonal produce has grown and evolved as I nurtured its existence with love and gratitude. The shopping experience has changed so much over the last three decades. As a child we walked to the local village to buy small amounts of fresh produce daily. The newspapers and magazines came from the newsagents, the meat from the butcher, and the fresh produce from the market or greengrocers. And then came the surge of giant out-of-town supermarkets. While Jersey has managed to stay largely free of the retail park curse, shoppers’ habits have nonetheless followed the UK and US with an increasing desire for more, more, more. (And most of it wrapped in plastic.) Thankfully, the tide is turning. With the help of veteran BBC broadcaster David Attenborough’s acclaimed Planet Earth series, we’re finally beginning to understand that our planet’s climate change issues are mainly due to man’s mass consumption and destruction of nature. It’s time to embrace the Art of Slow Living… While reducing our use of plastic bags and superfluous plastic wrapping will have a beneficial effect on the planet in the long term, there is one important mindset shift we all need to make right now: to slow down and stop consuming so much ‘stuff’! We’ve been led to believe we need this extraneous ‘stuff’ in order to be happy. That we need kitchen cupboards filled with food, wardrobes packed with clothes we’ll inevitably wear just once or twice, and bathroom cabinets overflowing with creams to make us look more youthful (allegedly). We buy bigger houses with spare rooms simply to store all the extra belongings we’ve accumulated. Crazy, right?
24 | www.life-mags.com
So instead of buying constantly, now is the time to slow down and ask… Do I really need this? Will it make my life better? How will I dispose of the item when I’m finished with it? And, how does my decision to buy this item affect the planet and other people? While changing every aspect of modern day to day living can be difficult and emotional, beginning the slow-living journey with food can be a far more rewarding, successful and enlightening experience. Food shopping in the slow lane begins with shifting our focus to the present moment; to indulge our senses in the colours, textures and variety of produce available and to choose our ingredients based on personal preferences. To create a slow and sustainable shopping habit, we need to step away from the supermarket (as much as possible). We’ve become accustomed to the privilege of buying everything under one roof, but in doing so we’ve lost vital shopping skills that we need to remember and re-embrace. While not everyone has access to vibrant daily farmers’ markets typical across most of Mediterranean Europe, there are plenty of alternatives to supermarket shopping as we know it. One of my favourite slow shopping venues is ‘Scoop’, The Sustainable Cooperative, a rustic outbuilding based in the leafy countryside of St Lawrence offering waste-free and organic produce. Refilling old jam jars with grains, pulses and spices has become a new way of life which is not only cheaper, but brings an unexpected, and rather thrilling, sense of satisfaction. Scoop, for me, brings to life the essence of slow living - from its produce in cloth bags to the baskets of locally grown vegetables, to the vintage wooden school chairs and table outside for youngsters to sit and draw or read while mum or dad is shopping. While queuing to pay may take longer than a supermarket (each item is individually weighed), no-one seems remotely bothered or in a rush to leave. Instead, conversations begin and people connect - a truly beautiful way to spend half an hour of your day a few times a week. r e m m u S r o f s e ip c e r BBQ
Sunny days are just around the corner so it’s time to for people across the UK to fire up the BBQ and celebrate the summer with a good old fashioned alfresco feast. And with our summer BBQ recipes full of delicious fresh ingredients and smoky flavours, the only problem will be deciding what to cook... 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 tsp dried oregano 6 shallots, peeled and quartered through the root salt and freshly ground black pepper to serve: 6 flatbreads, wraps or pitta bread a tub of tzatziki some slices of tomato and cucumber You also need 6 skewers to thread the kebabs onto. If using wooden ones soak them in water for an hour so they don’t burn on the grill.
BBQ SHALLOT AND LAMB FLATBREADS Tender lamb, marinated in lemon, garlic and oregano threaded onto skewers with thick wedges of shallot. These kebabs are great stuffed into some flatbread with tzatziki and salad. Serves: 4 - 6 Preparation time: 15 minutes plus marinating Cooking time: 10 minutes You’ll need: 600g lamb leg steaks, cut into bite sized pieces 2 tbsp olive oil 1 lemon, zest and juice
BARBECUED CORN ON THE COB WITH SHALLOT HERB BUTTER Super easy side dish making the most of summer sweetcorn, with a useful make ahead flavoured butter. This butter also works well with baked or new potatoes, or on top of a barbecued steak. Serves: 6 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes You’ll need: 100g butter, softened 2 shallots, finely grated 20g fresh herbs - a mix of parsley, chives, with just a little rosemary. salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 corn on the cob What to do: Add the soft butter to a bowl (if it’s too hard, 20 seconds in the microwave 26 | www.life-mags.com
What to do: Add the lamb to a bowl and mix together with the olive oil, lemon zest and juice, garlic and oregano. Season with a good grind of salt and pepper, stir well and cover with cling film. Leave to marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours or longer if you have time. When you are ready to cook you need to heat a barbecue until its really hot. You can also cook these inside on a cast iron griddle, preheated on the hob until smoking-hot. Thread the lamb and shallot quarters onto the skewers and grill for about 8-9 minutes, turning a few times so they cook evenly. Whilst the kebabs are cooking, warm the flatbreads or pittas by wrapping them in foil and laying on the grill bars, or warming in the oven. To serve, use a fork to pull the meat and shallot from each skewer and onto the centre of each flatbread or stuff inside a pitta. Top with a little tzatziki and a cucumber and tomato salad and tuck in. Credit: www.ukshallot.com
should soften it just enough). Stir through the grated shallot and herbs and season well with salt and pepper. If you are making the butter ahead to use later then place it onto a sheet of clingfilm. Roll into a sausage shape then chill in the fridge. When you are ready to cook the corn take a little of this butter, a scant teaspoon, and rub all over a head of corn using clean hands. Repeat with the remaining corn. Reserve the rest of the butter for after cooking. Lay the buttered corn on the grill bars of the barbecue and cook for about 15 minutes, turning frequently, until they are lightly charred in places and the corn is tender. Serve immediately with the rest of the butter dotted on top. Credit: www.ukshallot.com

Serve on a bed of the warm couscous with the remaining toasted almonds and mint sprinkled over. Serve with a green salad. Credit: www.berryworld.com
What to do: Combine all of the chicken sauce ingredients in a small pan and bubble for a few minutes until it becomes thick. Put the chicken wings into a dish and pour the sauce over, toss well so the chicken is completely coated. Cook on the BBQ for 20-25 minutes, turning and basting every 5 minutes during cooking. While the chicken is cooking whizz together all of the dip ingredients in a blender until combined but not completely smooth. Taste and season. Chill in the fridge until ready to serve. When the chicken is cooked, transfer it to a serving platter with a bowl of blue cheese sauce and some celery sticks and Little Gem wedges for dipping. Credit: www.lovecelery.co.uk

MASTERPIECE COLLECTION Inspiration of contemporary mechanical watchmaking Spearheading the Maurice Lacroix Manufacture, the Masterpiece collection strikes a clever balance between technology, tradition and modernist esthetics. It represents the brand’s expertise and, in particular, its mastery of retrograde complications, moon phases and chronographs, while creating a new image for the measurement of time. The timepieces of this flagship collection meet the highest standards of mechanical watchmaking set out by renowned Manufactures. The cases, dials and movements attest to the quality of their design and execution down to the minutest detail, which in turn reflects the brand’s rigorous approach to research and development. The esthetics of the Masterpiece Collection have evolved towards a contemporary design inspired by the art of living. Featuring modern finishes and silhouettes, this collection promotes a new experience of watchmaking that is firmly attuned to today’s world. Combining expertise and daring style, these watches revisit tradition with simple elegance, avoiding pretense and excessive extravagance. Created for modern-day dandies for whom performance and etiquette are everyday necessities, these watches embody the identity of a young brand whose innovative edge has given rise to a solid reputation. This year the Masterpiece Squelette line is revisiting its iconic timepieces. Driven by movements which are entirely created and developed in-house, the Masterpiece Squelette and Masterpiece Le Chronographe Squelette watch designs strike a clever balance between traditional watchmaking skills, esthetics and high-tech craftsmanship to produce a finished object of uncompromising quality. These are truly striking watches. Their powerful design and functional precision firmly entrench them in the context of an urban and hedonistic 21st century that appreciates an elegant approach to timekeeping, thus satisfying the expectations of a sophisticated clientele that is ever more demanding.
Unique, extraordinary and steadfast. The emphasis on the contemporary spirit of the new Masterpiece Squelette serves to highlight traditional watchmaking expertise and the application here of one of its most delicate techniques. The skeletonization of a movement is a painstaking operation that requires a very highest level of precision and dexterity from the craftsmen.

3. CREATE A 'HOT DESTINATION' WALL "Bring instant sunshine to a room, no matter what the weather outside, with summer- themed prints," suggests Omar Obaid, co-founder of art print specialists, Abstract House. "Photos of dreamy beaches you've enjoyed can transport you back to happy times and conjure nostalgic memories, while images of those tropical destinations on your bucket list could inspire you with hopes for the future. Research has also shown that just looking at pleasing art can lift mood and reduce stress." TIP: The best way to unify a frame set for a gallery wall is to choose a quality wooden frame in a single colour, advises Obaid. Co-ordinate artwork by colour, tone and subject, but don't be afraid to experiment with different layouts. A simple trick to help you visualise the artwork display is to lay all the frames on the floor, and swap the pictures around until you find the perfect fit or your favourite shape. cream colours. 4. CHANGE YOUR VIEW "If your home could use a seasonal pick-up, windows are a great place to start," says Susan White, design director at Hillarys. "Whether the light in the room is natural, artificial, reflected, muted or diffused, it can have a major influence on our mood and feelings. Shutters are widely regarded as the ultimate window dressing both from a style and security point of view, allowing plenty of light and air to filter in, and they have a perfect summer feel. "They can be a boon for allergy sufferers, because as long as they're wiped down regularly they're less likely than swathes of fabric to attract dust mites," she adds. "Tier-on-tier styles, where the top half operates separately from the bottom, offers privacy while still allowing light to flood in from the top." TIP: Summer brings longer days and shorter nights, so fitting a blind with a dim-out or black-out fabric is a good solution for restful sleep, especially in children's rooms.
5. TURN IT TROPICAL "We're great fans of the sultry colonial aesthetic - tropical birds, hibiscus flowers, fresh palms and bright ferns are key elements in creating this look," says Georgia Metcalfe, founder and creative director, The French Bedroom Company. "This on-trend look combines perfectly with furniture of all styles from classic to contemporary, for a style that is reminiscent of holidays, summer, jungle-freshness and nature - all things that make our hearts sing!"
32 | www.life-mags.com
6. LET IT GROW "Fresh green foliage and plants are the ideal way to bring an outdoor, summery feel to a room, and living wall planters have to be one of our favourite finds in recent years," enthuses Claire Bishop, from garden centre specialists, Dobbies. "They were incredibly popular at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the finished look is hugely Pinterest-worthy. A 'vertical garden' gives you a statement focal point - you could have a kitchen herb garden or a leafy living room jungle feature - and because they come in sets of three 'pockets', they can be tailored to suit your space." TIP: "These are quick and easy to fit and simple to use, even if you're not very green-fingered, and as they're vertical they take up little space," promises Bishop. "Simply water the top row of the living wall and this will cascade down to water every pot."
7. CONJURE A SUMMER SPOT Rearrange furniture for summer and position it to take advantage of any sunlight coming into a room, so you have your very own corner where you can stretch out and bask on hot days. "We all like a special place at home where we can kick back, put our feet up and enjoy lazing on summer days," says Charlie Marshall, founder of furniture company, Loaf. "Colour choices play a big part in the atmosphere of a room. While light, pastel tones always work well, recently there's been a big move towards zingier, bright statement shades - yellow, orange and pink - as people become more adventurous about decor. Demand for yellow upholstery is up 64% this year, and this colour's brilliant way to give a room a visual lift and can't fail to cheer a space on a dull day."

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
Repainting a Room
Long-handled rollers, plastic sheeting, and why you emphatically shouldn't just trust your judgement when picking a colour. By Luke Rix-Standing... In the pantheon of DIY tasks, painting a wall is not one of the trickier ones. There's a lot of setup, a few must-remembers, and more-than-expected physical exertion, but otherwise it's low-level stuff. Unfortunately, what painting lacks in difficulty, it makes up for in risk. Your walls are your home's desktop background and screensaver rolled into one, so when it comes to do-not-want-tomess-up factor, room painting ranks alongside replacing your front door. So, if you need or want to repair your paintwork, renovate a property, or just refresh your rooms with a fresh colour, here's everything you need to consider. A good coat of paint is about 90% preparation - don't say you we didn't warn you.
1. CONSIDER YOUR COLOUR What the sky is outside, a paint job is inside (and just think how much weather can determine mood), so you need to think carefully about your desired tone. Brighter colours can be energetic and invigorating, while more muted shades are softer, more atmospheric, and less assertive. "If you're nervous about your colour scheme, start with neutral colours inspired by nature," says Marianne Shillingford, creative director of Dulux. "Clay, stone, sand and wood work with each other and every other colour, so can be the bedrock of any decorating scheme. Use bolder colours in smaller amounts on furniture and skirting boards to help bring the room to life." Deeper shades can be rich and rewarding, but they do shrink a room and require a certain amount of management. "Using dark colours can work in places we want to be grown-up and relaxed," says Shillingford. "The key is to use layered rather than overhead lighting, and on all walls not one or two." You can even mix up your colour scheme; slapping some colour onto an 'accent' wall can brighten up a room that's playing it safe. It's common to paint ceilings a lighter hue though, to avoid any feeling of claustrophobia. 2. MISTRUST YOUR JUDGEMENT We don't want to point any fingers, but your main danger may come from your own conviction. "The biggest pitfall," says Anita Mullane, colour consultant for Colourtrend, "is that customers go into the shop, pick a colour, get it mixed on the spot, put it on the wall, and find that it's completely wrong. continues overleaf...

HOME LIVING
"Lighting is huge," she adds. "In store, you might have bright, white light shining down on it, which might be completely different to the light you have at home. Take a tester pot home, paint an A4 card (two coats), and then move it around at different times during the day. Take it into dark corners and lighter areas so you can see how the colour changes." The colour may change further in different rooms - depending on orientation. North-facing rooms will get a lot less sun, while south-facing spaces may be lit in abundance. This changes with the seasons too, and you want to be as happy in the blazing sun, as you are curling up in the depths of winter. Finally, consider any given room's function before you charge in. "A kitchen is a workspace, and generally you want workspaces to be brighter," says Mullane. "The living room on the other hand, might be somewhere you retire in the evening, so perhaps prioritise something more chilled out. In the bedroom, deeper colours often allow you to sleep better." 3. PREPARE YOUR SURFACES First of all - and we can already hear the groans - you're going to have to do some cleaning. There's not much point redoing your living room if the paint flakes within a week, so give your intended surfaces a thorough dust and wash them down with sugar soap. Allow the soap to sit for a few minutes, then do a wipe-down with clean water. Sugar soap can irritate the skin so wear rubber gloves, and don't let it drip in your eyes when cleaning the ceiling. If there are holes, cracks or imperfections, now's the time to marshal them. Most commercial fillers will do the trick - take advice if you're uncertain - and leave time to dry before moving on. Next smooth down unwanted protrusions with medium sandpaper, and give the whole surface a once over. The slight roughness that results helps improve the paint's grip. This process produces fine dust, so don a mask. When you've finished, you'll need to vacuum the whole room (yup - the ceiling too). Dusty paint is not a good look. 4. DON'T BE A MUCKY PUP Room painting is a messy business, and you'll need to paintproof your furnishings from splash damage. If you can, empty the room entirely, but if that's not possible then create a pile in the middle of the floor that you can cover with dust sheets or plastic.
36 | www.life-mags.com
Remove or cover light fittings and door handles, and use masking tape to protect the edges of doors, windows, sockets and skirting boards. Finally, don't skimp on the drop cloth - however dexterous you are, paint will splatter. Running out of product part way is a right pain in the paintbox, so measure the area of your walls to ensure you buy enough. Otherwise, you need brushes and rollers, and if you're doing the ceiling then a roller on a pole too. It's worth investing in highquality products, as hair coming out of your paintbrush halfway through can really ruin your finish. Consider picking up an angled brush as well - it helps reach those awkward corners. 5. THE MOMENT OF TRUTH So, you've picked your colour (and tested it rigorously), you've cleared your schedule and your floor space, prepped your kit and scoured your surfaces... Can we finally start painting now, please? If you're repainting the ceiling, always do that first. Begin by 'cutting in' - using a brush to create bands of paint around obstacles like light fittings, and along the edge where ceiling meets wall. Now the moment you've all been waiting for. Fill your reservoir tray about a third-full of paint, roll paint onto the roller and go to town no wrong answers. If you're doing more than one coat, let the first coat dry - a la the instructions on the pot - before applying the next one, and make sure you've finished the ceiling before turning to the walls. Painting walls is much the same, if a little less knackering. Use a shorter-handled roller that's easier to manoeuvre. Clean up, refill the room, survey your handiwork, and hope against hope you haven't painted over a light switch.

5 TIPS FOR WINDOW PRIVACY
By Julian Gray
It can be fiddly and frustrating to fit, but frosted window film gives a smart, contemporary finish both inside and out. The effect is the same in daylight and at night when the light's on in a room, giving you total privacy. The main disadvantage is that you can't see through the film, so while people outside can't see in, you can't see out either. Frosted film works well on sash windows when confined to the lower window, but if you don't have sashes, you can just frost the lower part of the glass. Another option is having a design, such as rows of cut-out circles or squares, incorporated into the film, which makes it more interesting and allows you to see out (and people outside to see in) a little. However, patterned film is more expensive and harder to fit than plain.

Blinds are another popular solution to privacy problems. Although quite costly, bottom-up blinds are ideal. These are roller blinds that go up from the window sill, rather than down from the top of the window, so you can cover as much of the glass as you want. Go for a sheer fabric and you'll be able to see out, but people outside won't be able to see in - unless the light's on.
2
Standard roller blinds are often a cheaper option, but even a fairly see-through white or cream fabric will cut out light if you have the blinds down during the day. However, this may not matter in a really light and sunny room, and may even make the room more pleasant to be in when it's hot and sunny.

HOME LIVING
Slatted shutters are similar to Venetian blinds and although they're usually expensive, have become popular in recent years. Shutters are fitted to the window and so block out more light than blinds when the slats are closed (if the shutters cover the whole window). They also let in less light when the slats are open because they have frames around them, but they do look great. Shutters come in different colours, materials, styles and sizes, so you can customise them to your taste and home - and they should add value. THE SHUTTER HUT PLUS are the NEW ENGLAND SHUTTER COMPANY CHANNEL ISLAND DEALERSHIP. Contact them on 01534 618222 or visit www.shutterhut.co.uk for furhter details and full range.
5
Venetian blinds provide privacy during the day (as long as the slats are angled the right way) and at night (as long as the slats are closed), although they do cut out some daylight. If you have small children, consider fitting Swish Cordless Metal Venetian Blinds which are safer because they don't have dangling cords, and give the window an uncluttered look.

Dreaming of Owning a Walk-in Wardrobe? HERE'S HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN... As far as home-improvements go, walk-in closets are certainly a luxury - but that doesn't mean you can't seriously consider it. By Luke Rix-Standing... When considering a property, for most of us, walk-in closets are probably not at the forefront of our minds. Not that we don't like the idea of them - but they've traditionally been seen as a luxury few can afford, more fit for a Great Gatsby adaption or the castle of a Bond villain. Creating that walk-in wardrobe of dreams, however, might be a lot more doable than you think. It's a great option for making use of a small space, whether it's a neglected cubby or an unused 'spare room' that's really not at all big enough for anything else. We've pulled together few tips to get you started, from the flagrantly flat-pack to the outrageously opulent... START WITH A SARTORIAL STOCKLIST If you're considering a walk-in closet, make sure it's for the right reasons. Generally speaking, this is about something you really want personally, rather than adding value. "When adding value to a property, every square-foot counts," says Julian Prieto, CEO of property renovation and refurbishment specialists, EDGE2 Properties (myedge2.com). "And in the UK, real estate is about how many bedrooms and bathrooms you've got. This kind of project is usually for assets people want to live in for 10 or 20 years." 42 | www.life-mags.com
Walk-in closets are generally purpose-built and vary enormously based on space, budget and need. There is no catalogue case study or IKEA starter-pack that can construct a walk-in closet over a weekend - you're going to have to think carefully about what will best work for you. This will determine the design of the space. "Rule number one is to understand your own wardrobe," says Prieto. "You need to be able to plan your walk-in closet around what you have and what space you need to allocate." A working professional might prioritise clothes rails for hanging suits and shirts, for example, while an avid shoe collector may
HOME LIVING
want a pull-out shoe rack, or perhaps an area of cubby holes for artful storage. If you're going to go to the trouble of building a walk-in wardrobe, it needs to perform perfectly, and empty space will likely ruin the aesthetic. Resist the temptation to go overboard on baskets, drawers and other accoutrements - the majority of wardrobes will need to maximise hanging space. CONSIDER HOW TO MAKE BEST USE OF THE SPACE Now you know what your room needs to accommodate, it's time to go about fitting it into the available space. This will be slightly different for everyone, but unless you're a rich list regular or minor royal ("I've built closets at around 300-square metres," says Prieto), we're assuming it won't be particularly big. "There are some rules of thumb when it comes to small spaces," says Prieto. "I would always suggest using just one wall and leaving the opposite side free - if there are two sides that are too close to each other, you won't be able to see your own clothes. If that's not an option, I suggest an L-shape, taking up one side and the front." Rather than using up floor area, the key is to maximise vertical space - large wooden units with compartments can help utilise every inch, stretching from floor to ceiling. Mirrors are the oldest trick in the book for doubling visual space, and putting one on the far wall allows you to preen and pose from any part of the room.
DON'T RUSH THE PLANNING Walk-in closets may sound like the preserve of the rich and famous, but they can be as simple as shelving units lined against a wall. To do-it-yourself, the proof is in the planning - working out dimensions and carefully apportioning space. "It can be quite fun," says Prieto, "and shouldn't take more than two weeks to put together. The planning should take longer when you get into that room, you need to know exactly what you're doing." THE 'ULTIMATE LUXURY' Of course, if you have a bank vault to rival that of Scrooge McDuck, then your options are almost limitless. "Hidden safes are common for high-end customers," says Prieto. "Recently, I was asked to put a jewellery safe hidden in the space between wardrobes. It was supposed to open vertically with a key card when she said she wanted it, I had to ask if she'd seen it somewhere because I didn't know where to go for it. We had to get it from Switzerland and it took four months and £25,000 just to fit it. I thought it was bonkers!" That sort of scenario might be totally unrelatable for most of us, but with a bit of planning and imagination, a walk-in closet could be an achievable goal.
Unless you're victim to a major moth problem, consider going door-less.
"It's the ultimate luxury - but you don't need to spend an arm and a leg," says Prieto. "Research what you need, take stock of what you have, and measure the space you'll be fitting. That's all you need to do."
"That's why it's called a walk-in closet," says Prieto, "so you can walk in and see all your clothes at once. If you can afford it, you could put in glass sliding doors - they open sideways, so don't get in the way when you access your garments."

Opting to work from home may seem an easy way to slip away from the time-wasting and stress of commuting, office politics and irritating bosses, but to be successful, it's essential you do your homework first.
group interior design manager at Redrow Homes. "But when the balance is right, the results can be profound. There's less stress, no difficult colleagues to contend with, and you can tailor your environment to perfectly fit your needs. "You should aim for a setting which inspires you, appeals to your taste and, if necessary, is also suitable for hosting meetings," she adds. "Often we find these areas may be multipurpose and used as a library or study for children in the family, somewhere to deal with household admin, or a place to enjoy a hobby." Follow our guide to three winning styles for home offices...
That work space can be anything, from a designated room to a small corner on a landing, or even a garden shed. Whatever your base, it will need to be well-equipped and functional to ensure you're able to be productive, organised and efficient - but also stylishly designed and comfortable, so you enjoy the experience when you join the estimated four million people who've already made home their work base. "The average person requires a lot of discipline and motivation to successfully work from home, often because of the lack of separation from the distractions of home," says Emma Brindley,
SERENE STUDY Your work space can be a haven of calm if you choose a soft pastel colour scheme and avoid clutter. "It can be difficult disciplining yourself if you're working from home, as there are often so many distractions around you. The right decor's key when creating a motivational environment, and a simple colour scheme with pastel shades can really make a difference," says David Roebuck, managing director at online blinds retailer, Direct Blinds. continues overleaf...

"Use a window blind which tones with the rest of the colours used for the walls or furniture, and add a rug in complementing shades. That will give the space an identity and you can conjure an informal style enlivened by colourful touches, which will be a brilliant contrast to the grey uniformity of a standard office." TIP: If your desk is in a living area, it can be hard to distance yourself from work at the end of the day - consider disguising it with a folding screen.
STREAMLINE STYLE A monochrome scheme, a compact desk and slim storage will integrate easily into an open-plan living area. "We've noticed a rising trend on Houzz for flexible work stations in kitchens, living rooms and even hallways," says Victoria Harrison, editor of online home design destination, Houzz.co.uk. "The kitchen's undoubtedly one of the most popular areas to site a home office, as our research found around a third of homeowners used that area, while seven per cent were specifically renovating that area so they incorporate a work or study space into it." TIP: Transform a wall with chalkboard paint, which will not only 'zone' the office area but help you stay organised if you use it to display lists, plans, notes and dates. TRADITIONAL TAKE "With many more people opting to work from home to achieve a more positive work-life balance, the office is starting to become a staple part of our personal space," says Brindley. "A substantial office at the back of the home, hidden from the hustle

and bustle, is fast becoming an essential feature in our show homes. It's about making it as inspirational as possible, and in a style which suits your taste and needs. "If you're creative, you'll probably want to display work, so consider cork boards and chalk boards and frame in copper for a contemporary effect. A bookcase filling an entire wall is a
classic addition to an office, whether you opt for a traditional dark oak, more modern pale wood open shelf feel or luxurious gold finish. Wire baskets and weathered wooden crates will conjure an on-trend industrial look." TIP: Personalise a space with a small wall gallery of family and friends, or consider a shelf for personal momentos.

WHICH HOUSEPLANTS CAN I MOVE OUTDOORS IN SUMMER? Michael Perry, aka Mr Plant Geek, shares top tips on which plants you can pop on your patio during the warmer months. By Hannah Stephenson... You may relish your indoor plants greening up your space, but many of them can be placed outdoors on your patio or window ledge during summer, where they will thrive and add colour and architecture to the scene. Top horticulturist Michael Perry, aka Mr Plant Geek, who will be giving houseplant advice to visitors at BBC Gardeners' World Live on June 14, reckons indoor plants can become the highlight of your outdoor space during the sunny season, if used in the right way. "You can be really creative with houseplants outside, not just moving them outside but repurposing them and perhaps even buying some houseplants in summer to mix into your existing displays," says Perry. Like the sound of that? Here are Perry's top tips... 1. WHAT PLANTS WHERE? Many foliage plants are ideal to place outside in the summer, says Perry. "If anyone's got a large yucca, a schefflera, or even a spider plant, they will all go outside."
48 | www.life-mags.com
Indoor begonias look great outside in the summer too. Varieties such as Begonia fuchsioides can be used as summer climbers, while some new Begonia Rex have been bred for outdoor growing as well. You can also extend that selection to things like dracaenas, or any of the more common houseplants which are not too fussy about conditions in the summer.
"They will appreciate being outside in the summer because some homes can get a little bit too warm. Put them on a slightly shady patio and you'll give them a little summer holiday outdoors," Perry advises. "It's not just about moving them outside, but using them as part of a patio pot scheme or even in bedding. It is possible to use houseplants as outdoor specimens within a planting scheme."
WE HAVE MOVED TO...
2. WHEN CAN I PUT THEM OUTSIDE? "I wouldn't follow the rule of last frost, I would wait until it really warms up and becomes summer. Mid to late-June is the best time," says Perry.

"You might have to harden them off a little bit, but you'll probably find that your house has warmed up by that point anyway and will be a similar temperature to the temperature outside. "I'd take them back in from mid-August, before it starts to feel autumnal." 3. WHAT CONDITIONS WILL THEY NEED? "You're going to try to emulate the conditions you need to give them inside. If you have a plant which needs indirect light and prefers being away from a window in the house, it may need a little bit more shade on the patio, otherwise it will be scorched. If you have a cactus or a succulent, you'll be able to put those outside in full sun."

them with fuchsias, so you have two shade-loving patio plants which work together. An upright fuchsia with a bottom foil of Begonia Rex would look good." 5. WHAT ABOUT COMPOST? Use a soil-based compost to repot your houseplants in summer, going just one pot size up at a time, and give them a feed every three to four weeks. Use a foliar fertiliser for green foliage plants or a potash fertiliser for flowering plants. But don't feed cacti and do let them dry out between watering. 6. HOW MUCH WATER? You may need to water your houseplant a little more regularly once it goes outside - and never assume rainfall will provide sufficient water for it. "Rainwater often just gets caught on the canopy of foliage and doesn't get down into the container where it's needed," says Perry. "It's better to water a houseplant from below, so it can take up the water that it needs. Ideally place a saucer underneath the pot." 7. WHAT IF THINGS GO WRONG? If your houseplant is looking a bit forlorn outside, it may be because it's too hot, particularly if you've put it in direct sunlight. It may be drying out, if you're assuming rainfall has watered the plant, and if it is in full sun there's a risk of scorch. Go for a little shade wherever possible.
4. HOW DO YOU GET THE BEST EFFECT VISUALLY OUTSIDE? If you have an eye-catching houseplant such as a yucca, use it with a group of potted patio plants in a jigsaw effect, moving things around which look better at different times, he suggests. Put a taller yucca at the back of the display. "You could be more adventurous and include houseplants in borders. If you're looking to use spider plants, for example, use them as part of your bedding scheme," Perry suggests. "Begonia Rex need a slightly more shaded area, but because they have really beautiful foliage they go well with red flowers. Maybe mix

7 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING AN OCCASION HAT Katie Wright asks millinery guru Mr Tony for his advice on choosing a formal hat, By Katie Wright, Fashion and Beauty Editor He may be small of stature and softly spoken, but the man who goes by the name Mr Tony is a giant in the world of millinery. As Fenwick Bond Street's resident hat expert, Mr Tony has been doling out expert advice at the luxury department store for 17 years, ensuring his clientele are fabulously attired for wedding season, garden parties or a day at the races.
6. CHOOSE A COMPLEMENTARY COLOUR “Colour is very important,” says Mr Tony. “Obviously, the colour of the hat has to go with the dress. If the dress is beautifully floral then you're best to do one single colour on the top, a colour that complements the dress.”
Here, designer hats and fascinators retail at up to £2,700, but you don't have to spend a fortune on your crowning glory, Mr Tony believes. “For me, price is not important,” he says. “Feeling confident and beautiful and having the perfect fit of hat for your dress and for your occasion is more important.”
“If somebody is really pale and blonde then we'll try not to go for blush, because it's just too pale for you. Contrast is wonderful. But if you have a navy dress, don't try to go for something like a fluorescent or pastel colour hat, go for something a little bit earthy, like pink or deep red, so the colours all complement each other.”
So how can you find your perfect hat? You need to think about your outfit, colouring and proportions, among other things.
7. DON'T FORGET YOUR ACCESSORIES Already chosen your accessories for the occasion? Then they will inform your hat selection too.
Here, Mr Tony offers his seven top tips... 1. PLAN YOUR CLOTHES FIRST Mr Tony says that whatever the occasion, it's best to decide on your dress or outfit first before looking at hats. “Once I've got the dress it's much easier for me to start fitting the hat. The shoes and the handbag are secondary,” he says. “But the dress, for me, is the most important thing.”
And your own colouring is important, too…
“Once we've got the dress sorted then it depends on what shoes you're going to wear and what handbag you've got,” Mr Tony says. “If you're going for a contrasting hat you need to make sure that you follow through with your shoes and your handbag, otherwise you're just going to be multicoloured…they do all play a part - it's like a perfect marriage.”
2. BRING A PHOTO OF YOUR OUTFIT Taking a photo of your dress, or preferably one of you wearing it, to the shop for your fitting will make it easier to find the right hat, Mr Tony says: “Then I can see the colour and the shape of the dress and how fitted it is or how flared it is, how long, then we can get the appropriate hat for you.” Local outlet ‘Up & Above’, suggest you take your dress / outfit with you, so they can match or contrast the colour perfectly. 3. DON'T GO WILD FOR A WEDDING Just as you wouldn't wear a white dress as a wedding guest, you don't want to outshine the bride with an extravagant hat. “A wedding is a little bit more classic and demure and also we have to respect the bride because it's their day,” Mr Tony advises. “But with Ascot it's fun and funky, it's your time, and everybody wants to be the most beautiful!” 4. REMEMBER THERE'S A HAT FOR EVERYONE Think you're not a 'hat person'? There's no such thing, according to Mr Tony. “Don't think, 'There isn't a hat that fits me' or, 'I've got a big head' or, 'I've got a small head', there is a hat for everybody - as long as you get the right hat for the right outfit,” he says. 5. SIZE MATTERS “If you're petite or small we're not going to give you a hat with a great big brim, with the wingspan wider than your shoulders!” Mr Tony says, advising that your hat should balance your proportions. “It depends. If you're going wear a shift dress, nice and fitted, then we'll fit you something that's small on the top. If you're going to wear something a little bit flared at the bottom then we'll give you a medium-sized hat. And if you're five foot 10 and you can carry it, we'll give you a big brim hat. A big hat with a big personality is beautiful!”

Suzie Webb WELLNESS By Juanita Shield-Laignel done at the butcher, the baker and the greengrocer! Long gone are those days. Much of the food now offered in supermarkets are grown and shipped from the other side of the world – many packed with chemicals to help preserve them. Many are picked before they are ripe, so decreasing their vitamin content, and artificially ripened before being offered to us for sale. Modern nutrition science is still so young – did you know that it is less than a century since the first vitamin was isolated in 1926 - we still have much to learn.
Do you remember my article in our September 18 issue with the title ‘Heaven Scent’ when Suzanne Le Quesne married Guy Webb? It was a happy/sad day for two people getting married knowing that one was so unwell, there probably wouldn't be a 1st anniversary. Guy sadly died at the end of December 2018 and it's been a bumpy ride for Suzanne over the last 6 months. However, in true form, Suzanne has bounced back and to quote one of Guy's favourite sayings 'getting on with it'! An important and huge decision was whether to change her business name or not. Guy, being in the finance and marketing world advised her not to - saying that she should stick with her business name of 20 years ‘Le Quesne’. But, having Webb just in her personal life wasn’t enough she wanted to honour her new but sadly deceased husband in her business life too – so ‘Suzie Webb Wellness’ has just been launched. Suzie (as she now likes to be called as it was Guy’s name for her), is a Nutrition Consultant and a fully insured member of the Federation of Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (FNTP), having qualified with the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in 1994. We have all heard stories from our parents and grandparents ‘in my day we had to walk 5 miles to school, in the snow, and just had boiled meat and potatoes for dinner – if we were lucky!’ and whilst some of these stores may have become exaggerated over the years what’s not, is that within the last half century our food has drastically changed. Things we eat now are not the same as they once were. Suzie and I can both remember when we were kids that our milk was delivered by the milkman and shopping was
Over the years Suzie has kept up with the developments and advancements in nutritional science and helps people change their dietary habits. Supporting the microbiome (gut bacteria) is paramount to good health; Suzie advises clients on how to do this with pre and pro-biotics, essential oils, healthy lifestyle, stress reduction and avoiding toxins in food, household, personal care and other products. Many people cut out essential foods from their diet resulting in deficiency and a disturbed natural microbiome. She was also telling me about detox systems, and that how important it was to do organ cleanses but in a particular order for the best results – really fascinating. Suzie is also an active Clinical Aromatherapist and although offers aromatherapy massage, a consultation nowadays is more likely to involve her making something for you to use at home. Her DCB (Daily Copaiba Balm) is a very sought-after pain management balm. I recently went to one of Suzie’s Make and Take workshops and made the DCB for myself! as well as another 4 natural products a lovely four hours and highly recommended. If you subscribe to Suzie’s website, you will be informed of any workshops she puts on locally. Suzie is a busy lady! Later in the year she is teaching aromatherapy in Romania and Poland. It's not just your skin that you need to think about protecting in the warm weather, says Liz Connor... We all know that when it's blazing sunshine outside, we should apply sun cream and wear a hat to protect our skin, but when it comes to our eyes, we don't always go that extra mile. During the summer, our eyes are especially vulnerable to harmful UV light, but according to research, up to 20 million people in the UK may be putting their eye health at risk by not checking the UV rating when they buy sunglasses on the high street. As studies also reveal that 5-10% of all skin cancers are found on the eyelid, keeping your eyes protected has never been more important. Dan McGhee, director of professional services at Vision Express, gives us his top tips for getting your eyes summer-ready. 1. START WEARING THE RIGHT SUNGLASSES FROM A YOUNG AGE "Up to 80% of a person's lifetime exposure to UV will occur before the age of 18, according to a study by the World Health Organisation, and with UVA sun rays causing premature ageing and age-related illnesses, it is important to protect your eyes from an early age. "Young people's eyes are more sensitive to UV absorption and under-12s are particularly susceptible, because the clear lenses in their eyes are not yet properly formed." 2. HAVE REGULAR EYE EXAMINATIONS "The best way to start protecting your eyes is by having regular eye tests at the optician.
56 | www.life-mags.com
"These will highlight any sight problems or damage, such as cataracts, macular degeneration or skin cancer around the eye area, and can determine other health issues, such as high cholesterol and even diabetes." 3. WEAR SUNGLASSES EVEN WHEN IT'S CLOUDY "Make sure you wear sunglasses while outdoors at all times, even if your eyes feel fine, as some of the effects of too much light can be delayed, just as in sunburn. "Prolonged sun exposure has been directly linked to cataract formation and pterygium (a pinkish, triangular tissue growth on the cornea of the eye) and are seen more commonly on people who spend a lot of time outdoors and in hot climates." 4. CONSIDER POLARISED SHADES "Polarised lenses offer the best protection from the sun, blocking indirect glare and reducing the need to squint, which can cause muscle fatigue, headaches and eye strain. "No longer just a sports essential, coloured lenses are now a big fashion win with celebs - so you won't look out of place on the beach."

SHOULD THEY STAY OR SHOULD THEY GO? A moving question for relatives of dementia sufferers Happily, Jersey has potential solutions for them all. Home care can be anything from several visits a day to someone living in 24/7 at the elderly person’s home. Just those few visits a day can ensure that your loved one is safe, eats and drinks sensibly, takes any medication and has some company. Coupled with visits to a day-care centre and family visits this can ensure well-being on all levels. If the condition worsens, a 24/7 live-in carer may be the solution – and one which is comparable cost-wise to some choices of care home, but offers one on one attention and solves many concerns, the main one often being how their loved one would react in the event of a fire.
Moving house is hugely stressful for most people at the best of times. It can be traumatic for the elderly especially those suffering from the various forms of dementia that can unfortunately accompany ageing. So why do we automatically assume that a care home is best if a loved one’s mental acuity starts to decline or Alzheimer’s strikes? “Family are only thinking of what they believe is best and safest for their loved one” said Nicola Heath, Co-Care Manager at CI Home Care. But is staying at home safe – or best? The UK Alzheimer’s society believes that people with dementia who want to remain at home should be supported to do so for as long as possible. Equally they highlight that good quality home care support may be required and that physical safety and social isolation are the two biggest risks.
“And solving safety worries at home need not mean a complete home renovation!” explained Nicola. “Small things can make a huge difference such as smoke or fire alarms, brighter light bulbs or throwing way old slippers and rugs that could cause falls. And we can refer you for a professional assessment.” Finally, dementia suffers, like all of us, need hobbies and social stimulation. “Here a live-in Carer is the ultimate solution as they’ll usually take the client out every day and friends and family can pop in, reassured that expert help is on hand” explained Madalina Sfarlea, Co-Care Manager. “There are also excellent day care centres, often including lunch, and transport may be available or the home care agency can help.” Whether it’s being able to keep a cherished pet, watch grandchildren play in familiar surroundings or potter about in your own garden, many of life’s little pleasures are only available at home. And help is available to stay there, even for dementia sufferers.

6 TIPS TO HELP CHILDREN
THIS SUMMER
As Disney launches a Family Fun Swim programme, Lisa Salmon finds out how parents can encourage kids to fall in love with swimming... Swimming and having fun in water is one of life's joys - but it can also be an essential lifesaving skill, especially as drowning is one of the most common causes of accidental death in children.
Yet, despite 95% of parents with kids aged under 12 believing that swimming is a key life skill for youngsters, more than half (59%) worry their child isn't confident in the water. Furthermore, research by Sport England has found that one in four children can't swim 25m unaided by the time they leave primary school. Further data from Swim England shows more than a quarter of parents take their children to the pool just once every six months or less, with 10% going less than once a year or never. Swimming also provides lots of health benefits. It helps keep children's heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina and even improves balance and posture. It can work wonders for boosting their confidence too and opens the door to a range of other activities, including kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, surfing, triathlon and yachting. Clearly, there are a wealth of reasons to help children get more water confident - and the younger the better. With Sport England's research showing enjoyment is a key factor in keeping youngsters active, Disney and Swim England have launched a year-long programme of Disney-inspired Family Fun Swim Sessions - to ensure swimming is a fun and safe activity for all ages and help young children get on the right road to swimming proficiency. To encourage parents to take the plunge and get their kids enjoying the water, Katie Towner, head of Learn to Swim at Swim England, has the following tips to help improve children's water confidence...

water and improve their movement and swimming skills. 6. TAKE THEM TO A FAMILY FUN SWIM SESSION Check out sessions at your local pool to help your kids have fun and improve their confidence while learning some essential swimming skills. The newly-launched Disney-inspired Family Fun Swim Sessions use some of Disney's most-loved characters to inspire activities to do just that. Taking place at more than 250 pools nationwide for the next year, you can find your nearest pool offering the sessions at swimming.org/Disney.
1. SHOW THEM YOUR CONFIDENCE You can help give your child confidence in the water by showing you feel comfortable too. If you look like you're happy and enjoying swimming, they're much more likely to do so too. Speak to your local leisure provider to find adult learn-to-swim lessons near you. 2. BLOW BUBBLES UNDER THE WATER A great place to start is blowing bubbles under the water. This will improve your child's confidence in putting their head into the water and establish aquatic breathing. They're probably used to splashing in the bath, which makes it even more accessible and fun. Start by progressively placing the mouth, then the nose, then the whole face in the water. Encourage them to breathe out and not inhale the water though. 3. ROCKET PUSH-OFFS A rocket push-off, also known as a push and glide, is a simple fun move that helps kids practice a streamlined position, which is an essential skill when learning any of the four swim strokes. To do it, children can start with either their feet on the floor with their knees bent, or feet flat against the pool wall, holding on to the wall with one hand. Then they need to take a big breath and put their face in the water, stretch both hands out in front of them, and at the same time push off with their feet and straighten out their legs, holding that position for as long as possible. To stop, they should simply push down on the water with their hands and lift their head, and at the same time bring their knees up to their chest before putting their feet flat on the floor. Push and glides can be introduced once the child is proficient in regaining an upright position. They can be practiced with the use of flotation equipment until the child is able to float independently. And be sure to make the practicing fun, with plenty of encouragement. 4. PRACTICE FLOATING LIKE A STARFISH "Getting your child to relax and float on their back in the water like a starfish is something we always recommend parents try with their little ones," says Towner. Knowing they can float on their back gives them confidence to take to the water, as they can rest for a while. The star float is the first step in learning vital water safety skills. 5. SWIM AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK Swimming at least once a week from a young age is not only a fun activity, but it helps children get used to being around the

Achieving Personal Happiness in 2019 The 7 day Plan that will change your life forever “If you always do what you have always done you will always get what you have always got” Ensure you take action and do things differently this year
Mark Shields Explains...
Achieving personal happiness seems to be getting more and more challenging in 2019. Ensuring we get the right work / home life balance, adequate personal time combined with a rewarding career seems to be getting harder to achieve and more difficult to find. Here is my personal 7 day life transformation program that we teach on our courses and encourage in our life coaching clinics DAY 1 - KNOW YOURSELF Knowing and understanding yourself is paramount in achieving overall fulfilment and happiness. You need to have a clear view of your values, needs, and wants. It is common to think that you want one thing and you really believe you need it, but it goes against your core values. This causes both long and short term problems. If you want to achieve total congruence and eventual happiness, you need to make sure your wants, needs and values are fully aligned to the current way you live your life. If you don’t internal conflict will present itself in the form of anxiety, agitation, stress or mood challenges.
DAY 3 - SATISFY YOUR NEEDS In life there are a core set of needs every one of us have. It is paramount as human beings these needs are met, if not it can lead to unhappiness, stress, and depression. Here is a list of our core needs • SECURITY - A sense of having a safe territory around us, so we can lead our lives without fear • BALANCE - A sense of autonomy and control over our lives • ATTENTION - Receiving it but equally important, giving it • CONNECTION - Friendship and trust in all types of relationships STATUS - Knowing we have a valued place in each of the social groups we belong • ACHIEVEMENT AND COMPETENCE - this maintains our confidence and self esteem • MEANING AND PURPOSE - this comes from being mentally and physically stretched
DAY 2 - AVOID NEGATIVITY If you feel and appear attractive and positive, you will attract the same into your company. Stay away from the doom and gloom of negativity within people, it will bring you down and be aware people may simply want to dump their negativity off on you. It is a simple mistake to base your life’s success on what you’ve achieved however it is far more prudent to base your life’s success on what you have indeed learned.

DAY 4 – KEEP MOTIVATED AND REMAIN IN CONTROL Establish your boundaries and be prepared to stand by your decisions. Begin by regaining control of all aspects of your life at home and at work. Declutter your life and have the confidence to make changes. Make a habit of reviewing this each year to ensure you stay in control. To keep yourself motivated to see these things through visualise the end result and imagine the feelings associated with that success. For example, imagine how good it will feel to clear out the loft or garage of all that junk and put it on Ebay or hold a garage sale. Imagine how great you would feel when the junk is gone and you are left with some cash. DAY 5 - HEALTH AND FITNESS- LEARN TO FEEL GOOD When you feel good your body produces higher levels of the brains “happy” chemical Serotonin. This controls your mood and low levels of serotonin have been said to cause a lowering of the mood and can lead to depression. Another important “feel good” brain chemical is the endorphins. These are released when we exercise. It is therefore important to have a regular exercise slot in your diary. Always make the time even if it’s simply walking to work instead of driving. You can monitor this by a pedometer, £7.99 from Boots. (Measure your daily steps) Not only will you feel good you will lose weight at the same time. Aim for 10,000 steps per day.
measurable, and achievable and that we review them regularly and we give ourselves specific timescales to achieve them. Goals start with a vision, picture what you want, explore the opportunities, and then be specific. Remember write them down. A QUICK STORY TO REMEMBER FOR 2019 “Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit” One day a farmer’s cow fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the cow. He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the cow realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the cow was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the cow stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! It’s going to feel like life is shovelling dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping by never giving up and moving consistently in the direction that we want. Just continue to shake it off and take a step up and learn from the experience”.
DAY 6 – BECOME A PROFICIENT COMMUNICATE Always ask at least five questions about the person you first meet. Listening skills are very important with good communication. Try giving out a compliment a day as a starting point. DAY 7 – SET ACHIEVABLE GOALS Goals are vital in us achieving what we want in life. They are instrumental in our lives both at home and at work. They add priority and focus to our lives and can keep us on track to achieve our objectives. Goals start with a vision and finish with a plan. If we don’t break them down sometimes they appear too daunting and we can be put off or give up entirely. A valuable rule when setting goals is to ensure that they are specific,

The vessel’s length of 120.44 metres and width of 22.85 metres ensures that she is the largest river cruise ship in Europe. My mother and I embarked on the elegant and sleek lined Crystal Mozart for the round-trip 10 night ‘Treasures of the Danube’ voyage, sailing from Vienna. We were thrilled with the prospect of cruising the enchanting Danube Wachau Valley, and visiting Durnstein, Melk, Linz, Passau, Bratislava and Budapest.

snacks we got to know some of our fellow passengers and our conversations soon centred on dining options and excursions. Recipient of the 2017 Cruise Critic UK Editor’s Pick Award for Best Dining, Crystal Cruises is recognised throughout the industry for its culinary expertise. The Crystal Mozart offers guests open seating in a choice of dining venues from the casual Waterside Restaurant, which presents locally sourced ingredients highlighted in continental and regionally inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The succulent slow-roasted lamb shank, served with shallots, thyme-balsamic flavoured gravy, garlic mashed potato and olive oil roasted vegetables, accompanied by a glass of Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo, Angelo Gaja Langhe 2013 was simply divine. For an elegant and more intimate dining experience, the Vintage Room seats up to 12 diners for optional luncheons and dinners featuring vintage wines and champagnes paired with extravagant menus and I was fortunate to sample the 36 hours slow roasted beef short ribs served with a black truffle, Macallan, celeriac, onions and potato confit and the Chateau Latour Pauillac, Bordeaux 2000 enhanced the flavours perfectly. Blue, a chic café, serves upscale bistro fare for lunch and includes global comfort food and shareable plates and the Bistro Mozart offers coffees, delicious pastries and charcuterie by day and wines and tapas during the evening. And, in the unlikely event that a beverage and snack is needed, particularly during the wee hours, the Pantry, which is a self service venue, offers speciality coffees, teas, wines and non-alcoholic beverages. After dining, we headed for the Crystal Cove Piano Bar and we were enchanted by the performance of the talented soprano Ioana Mitu, accompanied by Francesco Carlo Leone expertly tinkling the ivories of a magnificent Bosendorfer piano. The party was still in full swing when we returned to our stateroom, slipped on our fluffy bathrobes and comfy slippers and retired. Our ultra comfortable beds, swathed in crisp, white Egyptian linens and plump pillows, guaranteed a deep slumber and the gentle movement of the shifting waters of the Danube created a soothing sense of well being. Up with the larks and following a brisk walk around the promenade deck we headed for the rejuvenating yoga class, then a dip in the gorgeous indoor pool, and for a spot of pampering I headed for the on board spa for a well earned deep tissue muscle massage and a spell in the steam room. I then made my way to the library to select a good book and to make plans for the coming days. Passengers are welcome to explore each port unescorted or select one of the on board eBikes, or choose from a wide variety of excursions, many of which provide the opportunity to get an 66 | www.life-mags.com
up-close and personal destination experience with tours led by local experts and artisans. Other excursions include gastronomic adventures with hands-on cooking and the chance to sample signature dishes and specialities related to each port. Cultural tours include popular museums and architectural sites and there are exhilarating adventures for the very active. All excursions are limited to a total of 15 guests, which ensures that a more personal experience is attainable. There is also the option to design a personal itinerary with the assistance of the on board concierge service. We spent our mornings exploring the sights on land, relaxing afternoons on the promenade deck, sipping on cocktails whilst constantly admiring uninterrupted views of the intoxicating scenery and tranquil snoozes on the comfy loungers on the sun deck. To keep fit and work off those calories, after succumbing to the tempting dessert menus, there is an on board fitness centre equipped with modern machines, cardio equipment and free weights. Our Treasures of the Danube voyage was an exceptional river cruise experience and one of the many highlights was the tribute to Dame Julie Andrews, a Godmother to Crystal Cruises, which was presented in the Palm Court, the ship's main entertainment venue. The focus was on her unforgettable contribution to the Austrian - American film The Sound of Music and the passengers were easily encouraged to take part in a hearty sing-along. Another highlight was the fascinating lecture on the life and work of Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, who, in 1781 visited, and later settled in Vienna. The prolific and highly influential composer, who was proficient on the violin and piano at the age of 5, created more than six hundred works, including outstanding examples of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. On our last evening aboard, passengers gathered in the Waterside Restaurant for another sumptuous dinner and glasses were held high as a toast was proposed to the genius of Mozart and also to the Crystal Mozart, surely the most dazzling treasure of the Danube. 6 SIMPLE LIFESTYLE MEASURES TO HELP
Lower Cholesterol Levels Regular exercise and some healthy food swaps can make a big difference to long-term heart health, a nutritionist tells Liz Connor... Raised cholesterol affects over half of UK adults - and many are completely unaware of it. While high cholesterol itself doesn't usually cause any symptoms, it's linked with an increased risk of a number of major diseases, including heart disease. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that's found naturally in the blood, and it isn't always bad news. In fact, we need cholesterol for our bodies to function healthily - but there are different types,
and it only becomes a problem when levels of LDL cholesterol are too high. LDL (low density lipoprotein) is what's known as 'bad' cholesterol. If there's too much LDL cholesterol in the body, it can slowly build up and clog in the arteries, making it difficult for blood to flow. HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol, meanwhile, is the 'good' type. This helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and return it to the liver, where it's broken down and passed out of the body. Anyone can have high cholesterol, even if you're young and slim (sometimes it's genetic), and it can be diagnosed by your GP with a simple blood test. If you're diagnosed with high cholesterol, your GP may prescribe medication such as statins, but making simple lifestyle changes can help too. Nutritionist Sarah Franciosi explains: "By taking simple steps towards a healthier diet and lifestyle, you can help to lower your cholesterol. For example, one of the most common causes of high cholesterol in people in the UK is eating too much saturated fat, so it's a good idea to try and cut that out for better health." With barbecues and boozy pub garden afternoons on the horizon, here, Franciosi offers her top six top tips for naturally lowering your cholesterol this summer...

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
1. STAY ACTIVE Throwing yourself into a sweaty gym session after a busy day at the office isn't just a great tonic for stress, studies have also found that an active lifestyle can help lower cholesterol levels. Franciosi advises: "Regular exercise can help to improve your 'good' HDL cholesterol level. HDL cholesterol helps to remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and returns it to the liver where it is broken down and passed out of the body." She says you should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, five times a week or more. "Remember, if you have a particular health concern, it is a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise regime," she adds. 2. SWITCH TO HEALTHIER COOKING METHODS Frying foods is quick and easy but it can destroy some of the vitamins in veggies - and if you chuck a knob of butter into the pan, this can add to your daily saturated fat count. Franciosci suggests reassessing your cooking methods and switching to methods that don't require lots of butter, lard or oil. "Grilling, steaming, boiling and baking use less fat than frying," she comments. "So you can also cook up a storm with some of your favourite foods while cutting back on saturated fats." 3. EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEG There's no two ways about it - getting a good helping of fruit and veg in your diet is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall health. Not only are our colourful friends a good source of vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin C and potassium, but many fruit and vegetables are also packed with dietary fibre, which can help to keep your gut healthy. "Aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day," says Franciosci. "This will provide you with fibre and a range of vitamins, while also keeping your plate varied and colourful. Some fruit and veg contain soluble fibre which can help lower cholesterol, but oats, beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas contain it too, so you can keep it interesting by mixing up your plate with lots of different foods," she adds. 4. DRINK IN MODERATION Studies suggest that binge-drinking frequently (where you regularly drink over the recommended maximum intake of units)
68 | www.life-mags.com
can put you at higher risk of conditions such as high blood pressure and and high cholesterol. "The recommended daily alcohol consumption is no more than two to three units a day for women, and three to four units a day for men," says Franciosci. If you don't want to miss out on Friday night beers at the pub, she suggests putting a limit on your booze intake and switching to alcohol-free tipples later in the evening. "Remember, one unit of alcohol equates to one small glass of wine, half a pint of normal strength lager, cider or beer, or one pub measure of spirits." 5. SWAP OUT SATURATED FATS Franciosci says saturated fat is found in high-fat dairy foods such as cream, whole milk, hard cheese, butter, as well as in fatty cuts of meat and in cakes, biscuits and pastries. "Unsaturated fat is better for your heart health and is found in a wide range of tasty and versatile foods," she says. "These include oily fish - like salmon, mackerel and herring - nuts, seeds and vegetable oils, and spreads made from rapeseed and olive oil. This means you can keep your heart happy while still having a variety of foods to choose from." 6. TRY LOW-CHOLESTEROL ALTERNATIVES Going on a low-cholesterol diet doesn't mean you have to miss out on some of life's simplest pleasures - like melted butter on a round of toast, or a helping of grated cheese on a steaming bowl of spaghetti bolognese. There are now plenty of low-cholesterol alternatives to popular foods, such as buttery spreads, cheese and yogurts. "Benecol has a range of foods that contain a ingredient called plant stanol ester, that's been found to lower cholesterol and can help to keep a heart happy diet on track," says Franciosci. "They're found naturally in some edible plants, but only in tiny amounts. When there are plenty of them though, they work together to reduce 'bad' LDL-cholesterol." If you're concerned about your cholesterol levels, speak to your GP, and anyone aged 40-74 can get their cholesterol measured as part of their routine NHS health checks. In the meantime, it's a good idea to adopt healthy habits. "Not only can making the above changes be beneficial for lowering cholesterol, but they'll also contribute to better overall health," says Franciosci.

The most powerful Prancing Horse car ever references Scuderia Ferrari Ferrari introduces a new chapter in its history with the introduction of its first series production PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), the SF90 Stradale, images, videos and information on which can be seen on the dedicated web site: SF90stradale.com. The new model is extreme on every level and represents a true paradigm shift, because it delivers unprecedented performance for a production car. Figures such as 1,000 cv, and a weight-to-power ratio of 1.57 kg/cv, and 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h not only put the SF90 Stradale at the top of its segment, but also mean that a V8 is the top-of-the-range model for the first time in the marque’s history. The car’s name encapsulates the true significance of all that has been achieved in terms of performance. The reference to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari underscores the strong link that has always existed between Ferrari’s track and road cars. A brilliant encapsulation of the most advanced technologies developed in Maranello, the SF90 Stradale is also the perfect demonstration of how Ferrari immediately transitions the knowledge and skills it acquires in competition to its production cars.

MOTORING
The SF90 Stradale is also the first Ferrari sports car to be equipped with 4WD, a step necessary to allow the incredible power unleashed by the hybrid powertrain to be fully exploited, ensuring the car has become the new benchmark for standing starts: 0-100km/h in 2.5 sec and 0-200km/h in just 6.7 seconds. The new car is epoch-changing from a stylistic perspective as it completely rewrites the mid-rear-engined sports berlinetta proportions introduced on the 360 Modena twenty years ago, instead taking its inspiration from Ferrari’s recent supercars. A good example is the cockpit, which has a smaller frontal section and is placed closer to the front of the car to reduce drag. This was also achieved without impacting on-board comfort. The SF90 Stradale also sees the debut of the new ignition key with full keyless technology which will gradually be introduced across the rest of the range, personalised with the model’s name. Thanks to a special compartment in the central tunnel, it becomes an integral part of the car’s styling. For the first time on a Ferrari, clients can choose between the standard car and a version with a more sports-oriented specification. The Assetto Fiorano specification includes significant upgrades, including special GT racing-derived Multimatic shock absorbers, extra lightweight features made from high-performance materials such as carbon-fibre (door panels, underbody) and titanium (springs, entire exhaust line), resulting in a weight-saving of 30 kg. Another difference is the high downforce carbon-fibre rear spoiler which generates 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The Assetto Fiorano includes Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres designed specifically to improve performance on the track in the dry. They feature a softer compound and fewer grooves than the tyres provided as standard.
eDrive: the internal combustion engine remains off and traction is entrusted entirely to the electric front axle. Starting with a fully charged battery, the car can cover up to 25 km in this mode. This mode is ideal for city centre driving or any other situation in which the driver wishes to eliminate the sound of the Ferrari V8. Hybrid: this is the default setting when the car is turned on, in which the power flows are managed to optimise the overall efficiency of the system. The control logic autonomously decides whether to keep the internal combustion engine running or turn it off. If it is on, the internal combustion engine can run at maximum power thus guaranteeing powerful performance whenever the driver requires. Performance: unlike ‘Hybrid’, this mode keeps the ICE running because the priority is more on charging the battery than on efficiency. This guarantees that power is instantly and fully available when required. This mode is best suited to situations in which driving pleasure and fun behind the wheel are the main focus. Qualify: this mode allows the system to achieve maximum power output by allowing the electric motors to work at their maximum potential (162kW). The control logic prioritises performance over battery charging.

WINE
All Change for Climate Change by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant
Maybe it’s a mini French Revolution or is it “Plus ça change” in the world’s most famous wine region - Bordeaux.
ACCESSORY GRAPES The two largest appellations of Bordeaux have very recently been granted permission to use non-Bordeaux grape varieties to produce AC Bordeaux and AC Bordeaux-Supérieur in both red and white wines. As early as the 2021 the vintage will be permitted to include “accessory grapes” with up to ten black grape varietals and ten white ones to assist production by using late ripening varieties. NO INFRINGEMENT Traditionally Bordeaux produces its world-renowned red wines from Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet-Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot and its white wines using Sauvignon-Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle. Some other varieties are also used in small quantities but the very thought of using Pinot-Noir or Chardonnay makes one shudder. There will be no infringement on any other French wine region by planting classic varieties such as those used in Burgundy, Côtes du Rhone or any other of the famous wine regions of France. GRAPES UNDER CONSIDERATION Among the red wine grapes under consideration are Castets, an obscure grape grown in the south of France; Marselan, a cross between Grenache and Cabernet-Sauvignon; Touriga Nacional and Vinaho from Portugal and a cross between Cabernet-Sauvignon and Tannat called Arinarnoa. White wine grapes that could be permitted include Petit Manseng, widely grown in southwest France and the familiar Albariño or Alvarinho from Spain and Portugal. Both the white and black grapes have been selected because they tend to be late-ripening varieties and less susceptible to becoming over-ripe thus producing higher sugar levels and therefore higher alcoholic strength. STRICT CONDITIONS The idea of introducing these new grapes to Bordeaux is to see how they ripen in a situation whereby global warming can have an impact on the style of wine produced. There will be strict conditions for their use and each property that decides to plant the new varieties will only be allowed to do so in up to five per cent of their vineyards. The blend of wine will be permitted to use no more than 10 per cent of the new grape varieties and they will not be shown on the wine labels. This somewhat controversial decision comes at a time when more and more Bordeaux wine labels have been listing grape varieties to assist wine consumers to know what they are drinking. In recent years Red Bordeaux has shown Cabernet or Merlot on many labels and White Bordeaux has declared the use of Sauvignon-Blanc on the label. THE ENVIRONMENT Whilst chemical treatments are still widely-used in the vineyard, the new regulations will include one aspect of environmental control whereby weed-killers will not be permitted to be used between the vineyard rows. This is a small step in the right direction although weed-killers will still be allowed to be used between the actual vines. These new grape varieties will be limited for use only for the production of AC Bordeaux and AC Bordeaux-Supérieur but will it set a precedent for the rest of Bordeaux? Time will tell.

Theoretical physicist Helen Clapp's best friend Charlie has just died, and her grief is sharpened by guilt over their recent lack of contact. When she receives calls and texts from Charlie's phone number she assumes the device has been stolen. But when the messages get increasingly personal, Helen's certainty that there is no afterlife begins to weaken. Nell Freudenberger's fourth novel is no spooky ghost story: It's an elegant study on the impact of loss and mourning, complex family relationships, prejudice and power. The American author uses her Harvard experience to ground Helen's academic world, yet she explores single parenthood, missed romantic chances and sexual harassment with a depth that make them universal. Even the hard science is explained in terms the reader can convince themselves they understand, particularly as theoretical physics and religious convictions appear to blur into each other. It's fantastic: Freudenberger is at the top of her game. Lost And Wanted by Nell Freudenberger is published in hardback by Penguin, priced £14.99 (ebook £9.99). Review by Natalie Bowen
