The end of spring is nigh and there are little glimmers of summer hope popping up from the soil and tweeting in the trees, not to mention buzzing in the air…a few rays of sunshine are leaking through the clouds too. Summer must be on its way. Health, wealth and heritage are our main themes in this edition, as such, Nicholas Le Quesne of Corbett Le Quesne, discusses the feasibility of protecting wealth in marriage, Paul Darroch, Author of ‘Jersey: The Hidden Histories’ talks about battles at Gorey and Jersey Heritage are inviting us to take a closer look at the JEP Archives. With May being the traditional month of The Jersey Boat Show, I thought it might be interesting to go beyond pure reporting on the whys and wherefores of the show itself and instead focus on an individual exhibitor, so interview is with Suzanne Coxshall and by default, her 3 beautiful daughters and not forgetting her exceedingly busy husband, Nigel. The Liberation Festival also features this month and is full to the brim with all things musical. Musical, nautical…what a lot going on. Absolute Adventures join us this time too within the pages of a fantastic article about the health and fitness aspects of water sports

– not just for fun but with regular participation, giving you that six pack you’ve always wanted! Keeping the body beautiful in mind, Julie Naidu of the Laser Centre, invited me to enjoy and report on the prestigious Hydrafacial treatment on page 53. I thoroughly enjoyed it I have to say and would most definitely visit the Laser Centre again. Well, work now starts on our June issue when, with a bit of luck, summer will be in full swing and winter clothes packed firmly away in favour of sunscreen, shades and Espadrilles! Enjoy May…

Jazz festival included at Liberation International Music Festival James Mews talks to Jersey Life about Clare Teal and the Jazz event in the 2019 Liberation Festival The Liberation Festival is all set to return from 8-13th May 2019. It is the 11th Anniversary this year with an exciting and dynamic programme over a 6 day period. The international event celebrates the heritage of Jersey and in particular the liberation of Jersey. A highlight for 2019 Festival is the Jazz Festival on Sunday 12th May. It offers a wonderful family day out headlined by British Jazz Artist of the Year Clare Teal taking to the stage with her Mini Big Band. This year, the event is staged at the Jersey Royal Showground and jazz-lovers can relax on the lawns or enjoy seats beside the stage. Clare Teal’s excellent musicians will effortlessly traverse a rich landscape of timeless and sparkling material, with jazz standards by Cole Porter, Gershwin and Rodgers & Hart to witty and urbane songs of the 50s and 60s. Clre Teal is quite simply a British Jazz legend and it is a joy to be celebrating her third visit to Jersey’s festival. After signing to independent label Candid in 2001 and releasing 3 acclaimed titles, Clare broke through with her first album for Sony Jazz . Released in 2004, ‘Don’t Talk’ topped the Jazz charts and entered the UK Top 20, garnering extraordinary plaudits and several awards. She has now recorded and released 15 albums to public and critical acclaim, 7 of them on her own label MUD Records. Clare performs up and down the country throughout the year at festivals and high profile venues including the Royal Albert Hall,
Cadogan Hall, Chichester Festival Theatre, Glastonbury Festival as well as Jersey’s festival. And many of you will know her her own live show on BBC Radio 2 every Sunday night. The Jazz afternoon also includes sets by Jersey’s own Moya recently seen on ITV’s The Voice UK, duo Enro, starring Rodney Earl Clarke and violinist Enrika Daugele, and local band Retro Gramophone, known for their witty and funky jazz twists on classic popular songs. Local food, craft beers and thirstquenching Gin cocktails from the Gin Bar will be available during the event. With children’s entertainment taking place alongside the jazz, there will be something for all the family. Emily Andrews, Development Manager of the charity Music In Action stated, “Celebrating every Liberation Day is important to us as we both celebrate and remember everything that has been achieved since the end of WW2. I am personally delighted to be performing and it will be fantastic to see Clare Teal sing. As a whole the 2019 Liberation Festival will be particularly eclectic as we welcome an incredibly diverse range of international performers, from Jazz musicians to Westend stars”. Thanks to the One Foundation Clare Teal and other Jazz musicians will be taking a series of jazz educational sessions in schools to over 1000 of our children. This project will be a real chance for Jersey children to learn more about jazz. The Festival starts on Liberation Day on Wednesday 9th May with a Musical Walk around the beautiful countryside of St Ouen’s Manor starting at 2.30pm and an early evening 6pm concert in the reflective surroundings of St Ouen’s Parish Featuring

INTERVIEW
Do What You Love… How many times have we heard or read the saying ‘do what you love and the money will flow’? This phrase kept popping up in my mind as I sat chatting to local wife, mother, teacher and business woman, Suzanne Coxshall…interview by Juanita Shield-Laignel Sitting in the comforting embrace of Farways, an impressive Fontaine Pajot Athena 38 Catamaran, acquired by Suzanne and her husband Nigel whilst honeymooning during 2012, it was easy to be lulled into an understanding of the lifestyle that keeps Suzanne and her family waking in a state of adventure and anticipation each morning. Suzanne began “I schooled here in Jersey and then studied languages in Edinburgh. This seemed like a natural path for me as my mum is North African French and my Grandfather, her father, was Scottish. My father was a Jersey boy through and through - a Maletroit no less. Growing up I seemed to have a natural affiliation for language so studied French and Spanish with the full intention of working in some kind of interpreting and translation job and definitely not becoming a Teacher as my mother had been. But as often happens, life handed me the opportunity to teach at St Brelade’s College during the holidays and I took it for something to do, but found I absolutely loved it. On finishing my degree during 2004 I applied for a job in the Middle East, interpreting and translating for the British Intelligence Department; the wage was phenomenal of course, commensurate with the amount of danger I would have to face,
14 | www.life-mags.com
but it fell through, much to my Mother’s relief, and after that, local translation jobs just didn’t measure up, so I did a Teaching add on at Canterbury then took a post teaching in Switzerland which was great but eventually I wanted to come home and just naturally carried on with teaching.” “I went to work for St George’s for a number of years as head of language, then left to concentrate on having my first two children. When I decided to go back to work, I took a post at Beaulieu Convent School, thinking being Catholic myself, it would be perfect for me, but working with secondary school age just didn’t sit well, so after a year I applied for another job at St. George’s and am still there. I absolutely love teaching younger children and no matter where else or what else my life leads to me to, I intend to remain doing so.” And as if to underline this, Suzanne’s three daughters, hitherto fairly quiet with a stranger on board, found their voices and started to tell me all about Mummy teaching them. Gabrielle (preferring to be known as Gabi and in no uncertain terms) told me Mummy taught her last year and it was really good, but now that she’s six, she is in a different class…then continued chatting to her younger sister Leia who was adventurously climbing up on the white, leather, circular
INTERVIEW
shaped bench seat and disappearing over the back to open a window and announce she was going to climb out of said window on to the deck! After ensuring Leia was safely back on her seat and commenting she was sure I must have children myself, being totally un-phased by the presence and participation of hers, Suzanne continued. “It’s great working where my girls are. I get to see them growing up. I’m on-hand for all assemblies and everything else they are going through.” Said Suzanne before four year old Leia told me she was at nursery and her baby sister, two year old Ariane is a St. George’s Little Dragon. Suzanne continued “We’ve got a good few years of schooling ahead. With life being so busy, I’m sure I would miss out on a lot if I wasn’t there. It works really well. With my heritage, I am trying to encourage the children to learn French and my Great grandparents were Spanish, so I would like them to get to grips with it but knowing my luck they will opt to learn Mandarin or something, which incidentally is on the curriculum at St. George’s! We do all enjoy our French sing-alongs in the car though, so hopefully that will lay good foundations.” “My memories of growing up here in the Island were all about being down on the beach and spending the whole day in the sun and shock horror; not a sun-screen bottle in sight! My dad had a small fishing boat moored at Bonne Nuit so when I was little, much of my childhood was spent down there. Life revolving around the sea was normal and I can see it in my own girls, they are so comfortable in the boat and certainly the two eldest don’t get sea sick, I’m not sure about Ariane yet. In fact, Gabi didn’t sleep until her first night on the boat. She was four months old and hadn’t slept through from the beginning. I remember having to get up to check she was ok because it was not normal for her
to sleep through and then when I awoke in the morning it felt like some kind of miracle.” Gabi, interested that the conversation had finally turned to boats, proceeded to tell me she has her own boat called Super G and pointed to a rib on the next pontoon. Suzanne explained that their intention is for each of the girls to have a boat named after them, having also fairly recently invested in a Dufour 360 Grand Large named Princess Leia and hoping one day to have a boat called Queen Ariane. This led me beautifully to asking how Suzanne had as an adult, become so involved in boating given her ‘day job’ is firmly planted on terra firma? “I loved being out with dad on his boat so I just naturally found my way back to the sea and sailing as a hobby when I got back from Uni. I soon met Nigel and we enjoyed a lot of racing together and as so often happens, we found ourselves enjoying each other’s company too, then got engaged and eventually married in 2012. Nigel had been involved in sailing since he was a teenager and had bought ‘ToyBox’,” Suzanne pointed to a much smaller boat tethered next to Farways. “We did a lot of racing together and then when we were on our honeymoon we found Farways and decided it would make a great charter boat.” By this point in the interview Nigel had joined us, offered me a cold drink from the on-board fridge and having come in from the warm sun on deck, was sitting enjoying a cool lemonade himself. Nigel joined in “After our honeymoon we started doing catamaran charters from our office at South Pier under the name of Coxshall Marine and then Ian Barrette, who owned Go-Sail, moved into the office with us and eventually wanted to sell up so we bought him out. There were a few tired older boats amongst the fleet, so we sold those and have been systematically replacing them with new ones. Super G is our newest boat and is a 6.1 metre RIB, a great boat for day trips around the island's bays and reefs. It can take up to seven people comfortably.” I was interested to know a little of Nigel’s history. “My background is in electronic engineering and communications and electronics. I worked at Jersey Telecoms as a Technical Project Manager.” Suzanne interjected and they said in unison “when he/I had proper job”…they both laughed at their standing joke. “Someone at Telecoms asked me if I wanted to go out racing with him. Just like Suzanne, I spent much of my childhood on the beach and in the sea. I started sailing at school as an activity and learnt all about the island’s tides etc. I loved it and then ended up continues overleaf...

INTERVIEW
buying Toybox and developed from there. After gaining several years’ experience within the charter industry as well as gaining further teaching qualifications, in both Power and Sail, I am now fully qualified not only to take other people out on charters but also to teach. We offer scheduled charters on Fridays and Saturdays and we also do private charters. We have six boats all with varying capabilities and strengths. Princess Leia is as beautiful as she sounds, spacious and sleek and perfect for sailing with family or friends.” Having finished his drink and needing to get on with his daily tasks, Nigel left us to it. Suzanne carried on. “There is a huge racing calendar locally and we find a lot of clients want to get out and do something a bit more exhilarating. Luckily Nigel is a fully qualified racing yacht skipper so we can cater for it all not just families or groups of friends who want to go out for a lovely afternoon pottering about, stopping for a picnic and swim and then sunbathing on the deck on the way home.” “We also run a lot of courses and teach RYA Sailing Training for beginners right up to Yacht Master and RYA Power Boat Level 1 and 2 and we offer memberships for an annual or monthly fee for those who want to sail, in whatever capacity, on a regular basis but don’t want to own their own boat for whatever reason…this is really popular. It still amazes me how many people on the island aren’t aware how easy it is to charter a boat and we like to think we’ve pitched our fees at an affordable rate to encourage as many people as possible to have a go.” It was increasingly evident that Suzanne is as passionate about sharing sailing as she is about teaching. I asked her if she might be tempted to give up teaching as life on the waves seemed pretty full. “No, I love teaching so much I can’t see that I would ever give it up, and teaching gives me school holidays to be down here almost constantly with the girls. This is a real home from home for them.” The girls then started to tell me that the only thing was, they couldn’t always bring doggy Duke down to the Marina with them. It turns out doggy Duke is a Jack Russel that as a puppy and on enjoying a trip to Farways with Nigel, slid into the sea and disappeared underneath the Cat and had to be fished out. Luckily he was wearing a life jacket and all was well. Gabi interjected, “That happened when not even a single bit of me was alive.” Suzanne smiled and agreed that yes it was before Gabi was born. Suzanne carried on “So now we are always extremely careful and either leave doggy Duke with family when on extended trips or our with skipper Max Boleat, one of the team, sometimes takes care of him on his boat. I asked Suzanne how they get on with the rest of the boating community. “Great. It’s easier to get on well with everybody. It all seems fairly good humoured.” “We also feel it’s good water Karma to be involved as much as we can in the community, the island tides can be challenging and we all need each other. Nigel has volunteered with the RNLI for years and feels it’s important to give back. There have been occasions when we’ve been able to accommodate people with varying disabilities but if anyone with a particularly challenging set of circumstances makes an enquiry, we refer them to ‘Wet Wheels’ because they are completely geared up for that. We also contribute however we can to the Variety Sailing Trust and support them perhaps with prizes of sailing days for raffles and the like.”

Each year, hundreds of local children are able to enjoy and benefit from the experience of going afloat under sail. Most of the young people of the Variety Sailing Trust come from special needs units such as Mont a L'Abbe and Les Amis together with adult groups from Health and Social Services. To continue to provide this opportunity, the Trust is reliant on donations, from both corporate and the public alike and Nigel and Suzanne feel it is important to help where they can. “The business has been a huge financial investment with a massive change over this winter…there isn’t a single boat in our fleet that’s ‘rubbish’ they are all brand new…anyone going out with us will have everything they need for a really great experience whether it be a quick blast with a RIB to Les Minquiers or Les Ecrehous or longer trips to Sark, Herm, Guernsey or France, or just pottering around Jersey, stopping on the north coast. Sailing takes longer than Power boating of course so it is all about the sailing rather than the destination - sit and have a drink and a conversation, croissants and pain chocolate for breakfast and then the picnic comes out and the beers in the summer. We have year round business crew membership. Through the winter, Solis Ortus is in practically every race, we wrap up warm and get on with it. It’s very exhilarating.” I was interested to know if Suzanne and the family get any down time. “Not really, we like to go skiing and the girls are learning and doing really well.” Still listening with a keen ear young Gabi piped up, “This is our holiday boat.” Mum agreed that yes they did indeed take Farways on family holiday trips. Whilst Gabi was fully engaged I asked her if she knew what she wanted to do when she grows up…was she going to sail like her mummy and daddy. She thought a minute and then said “I might join the RNLI like Daddy”. Suzanne and the girls then proceeded to show me around the four, double cabin boat, the girls singing and giggling as we went, demonstrating their agility in climbing up and down the stairs and negotiating the gap as we all jumped off the boat back onto the pontoon. I imagine whatever they do in life they will follow in their mummy’s footsteps and become intrepid explorers and adventures and do what they love best. https://www.go-sail.je/events-calendar.html http://www.varietyjersey.org.je/content/variety-sailing-trust-0
HERITAGE
Faces and Places STORIES FROM THE JEP ARCHIVE A new exhibition at Jersey Museum and Art Gallery entitled Faces and Places Stories from the JEP archive, opens on 25 May and shows hundreds of photographs from the Jersey Evening Post photographic archive. The archive is a unique visual record of people in Jersey and Island life, featuring events great and small. The exhibition illustrates some of the thousands of photographs printed in the newspaper since the 1920s. To mark the 125th Anniversary of the Jersey Evening Post, JEP editor Chris Bright, photographer Peter Mourant and photographic archivist Jan Hadley organised the transfer of this important collection to Jersey Heritage. Before being deposited with Jersey Heritage, the images were stored as negatives in envelopes and subject boxes in a small room at the JEP next to the printing presses. Archive staff repackaged the negatives from brown, poor quality envelopes to acid free packaging and placed them in archival boxes. The next task was to start the scanning and cataloguing process. Just to confuse matters, photographs were filed in different ways over the years. Early photographs are sorted into subject boxes. This made it quite challenging when searching for a particular image
from this period in time as images could be stored under lots of different subjects. Up until the mid-1970s not all images were kept so even if a photograph appeared in the JEP, it might not be stored in the collection. From 1976 all negatives from every job were kept and filed. But they were filed by job number and those job numbers recorded in the photographers’ diaries, which means the information about why and when a photograph was taken, was separated from the photograph itself. It’s a huge task to put to put the right information back with the right photograph. The collection is really a reflection of what was going on in Jersey at the time. It records the extraordinary and the mundane, the tragic and the joyous and sometimes the just plain bizarre! Sporting events, Battle of Flowers, amateur dramatics, news stories, Christmas nativities, school fêtes – lots of aspects of Island life and Island people featured in the pages of the Jersey Evening Post. It recorded the boom in the tourism industry, the decline of farming and dominance of the finance industry. Jersey Heritage now looks after the Jersey Evening Post photographic archive and has so far scanned about 400,000 of the 1,500,000 photographs in the collection, many from the period 1976 onwards.
The exhibition illustrates over 800 of these photographs and is an opportunity for Islanders to get involved in recording the collection. Many of the photographs don’t have details of when, why or where they were taken, or who they might be of. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to share any information they might know about the photographs with archivists. You never know - you might spot yourself or someone you know! Thank you – we really appreciate your help. Every piece of information helps us record, keep and share Jersey’s history. Mèrcie bein des fais. If you’d like to look at more photographs, and possibly spot more friends and family, visit the Jersey Heritage website at www.jerseyheritage.org and click on Jersey Heritage Archives and Collections online. If you want a copy of a photograph you’ve seen, digital copies from the Jersey Evening Post archive are available to buy. Please note down its number and contact archives@jerseyheritage.org. The exhibition was made possible with support from Jersey Heritage Patrons and Benefactors and sponsored by Benest and Syvret.

HISTORY
The Siege of Gorey Castle by Paul Darroch SIR WILLIAM ASTHORPE MONT ORGUEIL JULY 1373 Jersey is burning before my eyes. I watch the pyre from the battlements, high above the shimmering bay. The fields of Grouville are ablaze, and half the harvest is lost. In the winter to come, we will surely starve. I have failed in my first duty as Warden of the Isles. Far below, the flower of French chivalry is poised to strike. Two thousand knights stand against us, commanded by the Black Dog himself, Bertrand Du Guesclin. Their polished armour is blinding in the summer sun. I cast my eye over the village of tents, horses and supply wagons beyond; the long tail of camp followers, cooks and thieves that cling like parasites to the underbelly of any army. Earlier today, the French tested our defences with a bloody, frontal assault. We easily repulsed them with a shower of arrows; but we knew it was only a ruse to gauge our strength, to pry our weakness. Our fatal poverty of numbers was revealed, and the enemy will return. On the seventh day, even Jericho fell. Hours pass and the hot evening slides into a fetid night. After the frenzy of the day, my handful of English archers sprawl on their straw pallets, dog-tired, with the pallor of hounded stags. I scoop a glance through the arrow slits, surveying the dying campfires. My ears catch the murmur of this great invading army. The air reeks with sweat, soot and horse manure, mingled with the overwhelming stench of the dead. As the sun sets, we make out the ominous thud of hammer and chisel, the rustling as sacks of dark earth are lifted from secret tunnels. We know their moles must be tunnelling somewhere far below, burrowing like weevils towards us. When Jericho fell, all were put to the sword. I drift into an uneasy sleep. In my dreams, I am walking in the gentle bowers of my Devon home, through a grove of pear trees. My wife smiles at me and tucks a breviary under her arm. Its rich illuminations show the high walls of Jericho. It is the first day of Spring, when the skies are young and gifted with promise, but I have to leave her soon for the Isles. The King’s messenger is coming. I hear the sound of approaching hooves, bearing down, hammering towards me… I lurch from my mattress, jolted awake by an unearthly shriek. I shudder with an unbidden shiver of terror. Then I steel myself, and stagger to my feet, drawing my sword as I rise. An avalanche is cascading around me. The floor roars and shudders around us and I curse like a fool. The curtain wall is caving in. As if in a dream, I watch the cavernous stonework collapse on itself, tumbling down in a

choking whirlwind of dust, a hail of rock. I stand thunderstruck. At long last, the terrible slide is done, and the screams of the dying are heard above the din. Fires burn sullenly at the base of the livid breach. My broken heart slams into my chest. We are undone. I sound a desperate retreat. “To the Keep!” My English archers diligently comply. Yet a handful of local lads, perhaps deafened by the blast or drunk with the deadly mead of courage, choose to fight. They stand and raise their swords, spitting curses into the darkness. They are soon slaughtered like wild hogs. A hundred French soldiers have surged into the bailey, bristling with pikes and armour, screaming of glory. The Black Dog is at their head. He is brimming with pouting arrogance, as he runs the hares to ground. He barks orders from his horse like a petty, pugnacious Caesar. No coward he. No fool. We bolt ourselves tightly in the Keep. When the inevitable demand comes in the morning, I reply as the royal command compels me: there shall be no surrender. My head would be on the block for anything else. And from the outside, my Keep still looms impregnable, secured by great walls that could withstand Doomsday. The angel rolled back his scroll, the seas fled, and still Gorey Castle endured. Appearances deceive. This place is a mausoleum, a sealed tomb. The Black Dog has judged aright. He knows, and I know, that my cisterns are running dry. The story is continued in Jersey: The Hidden Histories, which imagines Jersey’s history through the eyes of those who witnessed it. The book is available throughout Jersey and on Amazon.

FAMILY
Can you really protect wealth in marriage? By Nicholas Le Quesne, Corbett Le Quesne A 2018 poll by UK law firm Slater and Gordon of 2000 British adults, showed that money worries top the reason why married people split up. Even where there is wealth, a lot of wealth, money and spending worries are real. The higher the expenditure, the higher the risk and the higher the potential tension. Even more so, the more money there is, the more there is to protect, so planning ahead is crucial. That’s what Anil Ipekci and Morgan McConnell were trying to do. Anil was a concierge at a Manhattan hotel when he met his future wife, Morgan, the great-granddaughter of David McConnell, founder of Avon, the cosmetics conglomerate. Before their marriage in 2005 he signed a pre-nup which entitled him to only half the percentage increase on three properties owned by his wife, should the marriage come to an end. The pre-nup had as its intention to protect the family trust, worth some £49 million. When the marriage ended in 2016, the properties in question had not changed in value at all. He would have been left with nothing had the pre-nup been enforced. As it happened, it wasn’t enforced, and Mr Ipekci was awarded a settlement of £1.3 million to meet his needs. So why was that? And does it fly in the face of Radmacher, which so far has guided family law’s approach to nuptial agreements and provided comfort to high net worth individuals who have sought a way to protect wealth in marriage?
No it doesn’t, it simply reinforces the points that have to underpin every such agreement, if it is to be expected to carry weight in court, as laid down in that case.
“Both sides in a marriage that involves a lot of wealth in particular, will benefit from the security of a properly executed pre-or post-nuptial agreement.” Radmacher is the case we family lawyers lean on when it comes to giving weight to pre-and post-nuptial agreements. There a wealthy German wife did manage to enforce more or less the terms of the agreement she had reached with her husband, succeeding in protecting her family assets. It brought in a sea change in the family law world when it came to the security that could be attributed to such agreements. The central premise of Radmacher was that “the court should give effect to a nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications, unless in the circumstances prevailing, it would not be fair to hold the parties to their agreement.” Leaving Mr Ipekci penniless, but for his hotel job, was deemed not fair. The Jersey courts have held similarly over the last few years. In 2017 it decided not to give force to a prenuptial agreement that would have left the wife in a situation of real financial hardship following a 15-year marriage. It’s unlikely the same could have been argued in a later case where the husband, following a four-year marriage, was given £1,000,000. Such a provision would be much harder to defeat on ‘hardship’ grounds, especially if the pre-nuptial agreement had been completed correctly. What case law has done since Radmacher, is set out firm guidelines on how to create nuptial agreements that will carry weight in court.
FAMILY
Specifically: • Both parties to the agreement must have had independent legal advice. • The agreement must be freely entered into, in other words there must be no mistake, misunderstanding, pressure or undue influence brought to bear on either party’s ability to exercise their own free will. • There must be sufficient disclosure, which means you must both share with the other the true extent of your assets and their value. • Both parties must understand what the agreement means and agree to be bound by it. This is crucial when it comes to enforcing the agreement, because really what is asked of the court in such a situation, is that it waives its own discretion to make a financial order, in favour of the terms of the pre-nuptial agreement. • Finally, the agreement must be made in good time before the wedding, ideally two months before and no less than 28 days prior. “We need more judicial reassurance that our faith in the crafting of prenuptial agreements after Radmacher… has not been misplaced” wrote a concerned Jane Keir, family law partner at Kingsley Napley, in response to the Ipekci ruling in The Times last month.
Importantly, rather than undermining marriage, the court accepted in Radmacher that pre- and post-nuptial agreements can strengthen a marriage. Ipekci doesn’t change that. In my view the decision in Ipekci simply tries to strengthen the rules around nuptial agreements, to ensure they are really fit for purpose. Only then can they also strengthen marriage, and only by following the rules can we expect them to be enforced. The more case law we have to help us shape the framework around nuptial agreements, the more weight they will carry, and if that’s the case, Jane Keir’s concern is misplaced. Both sides in a marriage that involves a lot of wealth in particular, will benefit from the security of a properly executed pre-or post-nuptial agreement. The holder of the wealth will know what is secure and what is at risk, whilst the other side will have the security of knowing there is a provision in place and on what terms. But the central pillar has to be one of fairness, and that is as much the case here in Jersey as it is in the courts of England and Wales. The main lesson we need to take from Ipekci, is that the inherent jurisdiction of the court is very much to be reckoned with still, and for an agreement to stand the best chance of succeeding in court, it must meet the criteria set out, and it must be fair. Then, and only then, can you really protect wealth in marriage.

Get your taste buds ready for National Vegetarian Week 2019 which runs from 13-19 May. It’s all about eating delicious and exciting veggie food and promoting the benefits of a meat-free lifestyle. So sink your teeth into or range of delicious dishes and go vegetarian for just one week. about 200ml cold water vegetable oil, for deep frying for the minted yoghurt: 200g coconut yoghurt (or other dairy-free yoghurt) 4 sprigs mint, leaves picked and chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed salt and freshly ground black pepper What to do: Add the shallots to a mixing bowl and sprinkle over the salt, stirring well to mix. Set aside for a few minutes to allow the salt to slightly soften the shallots. Mix up the dip by adding the yogurt, mint, garlic and salt and pepper to a small bowl, stirring well to mix. Set aside. Add the flour, chilli, nigella seeds and turmeric to the shallots, stirring well to combine. Stir through just enough water to bring the mixture together so a thick batter forms around the shallots, about 200ml. Set aside to rest whilst you heat up the oil.
VEGAN MINI SHALLOT BHAJIS WITH MINTED YOGURT Spicy and crispy, these little bite sized bhajis are great for a party or as part of an Indian feast. Makes: about 16 bite-sized bhajis Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes You’ll need: For the bhajis: 400g shallots, thinly sliced 1 tsp salt 175g gram flour (chickpea flour) 1 long red chilli, finely sliced 1 tbsp nigella (black onion seeds) 1/2 tsp turmeric
Pour enough vegetable oil into a large deep saucepan so that it forms a 4-5cm layer. Turn on the heat and bring the oil up to 180°C, using a meat or jam thermometer to measure the temperature. If you don’t have a thermometer, drop in a little slice of the shallot, it should sizzle instantly. Alternatively, you can cook in a deep fat fryer, setting the dial to 180°C. When the oil is hot enough, use a heaped teaspoon to scoop up the bhaji mix, then use another teaspoon to slide the mixture directly into the oil, working with care so the oil doesn’t splash. Repeat until you have added about 4-6 bhajis and fry for about 3-4 minutes until crisp and golden, carefully flipping over with a palate knife halfway through cooking. Scoop out with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper whilst you repeat with the rest of the mixture. As soon as all the bhajis are cooked, serve with the bowl of minted yogurt. NO TIME FOR A PROPER SPRING CLEAN?
Try these simple steps for a good refresh instead
Traditional spring cleans may be out of fashion - but it's still a good time to clear any lingering winter cobwebs and clutter. By Gabrielle Fagan... Rushing to polish windows, scour surfaces, sweep away cobwebs and generally spruce up your rooms as part of that annual big spring clean? Thought not! It seems today's busy lives and stretched schedules are helping kill off the tradition of a seasonal deep clean, according to recent research by home appliance specialists, Beko. The brand quizzed 2,000 people - and found that 38% believed the notion of spring-cleaning was dying out. On top of that, only half of the people polled set aside time each week to clean their home, and three in 10 admit they only manage to squeeze in a few chores at the weekends. But, even if you don't quite feel the urge to go into a seasonal cleaning frenzy, there are a few easy-peasy ways to get a spring clean result without too much time and effort...

CLEAR THAT CLUTTER "With spring around the corner, it's the perfect time to re-evaluate your home, de-clutter and get it organised," says Nicola Lewis, aka pro sorter-outer of stuff, This Girl Can Organise (thisgirlcanorganise.com), who offers a professional home organiser service and counts celebrities including Gemma Collins among her clients. "Your home should tell a story of who you are, and house a collection of everything you love. Your overall objective is to create a space that relaxes you and makes you smile, and one that works for you. "Start by walking around your home with a notepad and pen, and plan the process," Lewis suggests. "Ask yourself, 'How can I improve this and manage the available space better?' Clarify in your mind what you should keep or get rid of." Lewis' step-by-step plan: First, clear the room as much as possible. Next, sort items into four piles: Keep, donate, sell and bin. Clean away dirt and dust, then before placing furniture and items back into their places, really consider their location and position, so that it all really suits you and the people living in your home. CLEAN IT GREEN Add to that glow of satisfaction at the end of a good clean by knowing you've used planet-friendly products. There's a wide variety of eco-friendly ranges out there these days - or you could Google DIY recipes and make your own (that way you can avoid excess packaging and harsh chemicals altogether). The National Trust's new range of household cleaning items is made in the UK and uses a combination of natural ingredients, fragrances and 100% bioplastic bottles. TOOL UP There's a homely, nostalgic feel to vintage-style cleaning kit - even though it might remind you that in the past you'd have been spared the annual cleaning chore, which would have been delegated to below-stairs servants! Companies such as Re-Found Objects specialise in reclaimed, vintage and hand-made household items, meaning you can stock up in a more sustainable way too. Whatever task you're tacking, ensure you've got all the right tools for the job at hand from the start, so your enthusiasm doesn't wane as you search for that missing dustpan or broom. MATTRESS MAKEOVER Most of us wash the bed sheets every one to two weeks, but when was the last time you actually cleaned your mattress? "It's a little-known fact that you should actually clean some mattresses every six months to prevent dust mites, dead skin and dirt accumulating," says Neil Robinson, chief sleep officer for bed specialists, Sealy UK. "Use a vacuum-cleaner to remove dirt, hair and crumbs. One old home-remedy suggests using baking (bicarbonate) soda to freshen a mattress," he adds.

PLANT UP A ROOM Indoor greenery can clean the air, as well as injecting life and colour into a space, which is a perfect way of welcoming spring, declares Claire Bishop, houseplant buyer for Dobbies Garden Centres. "Houseplants are brilliant anti-pollutants and help to increase oxygen levels. For me, stepping into a room of lush and leafy greenery is a definite mood booster," she enthuses.
28 | www.life-mags.com
"My favourite is lavender, which can add a lovely calming fragrance to any room and is particularly good for aiding sleep in a bedroom. Simply ensure it has plenty of fresh air and natural light." Bishop's top tip: Don't overlook existing houseplants in a spring clean. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to help remove dust and promote good health. Remove yellowing foliage and trim damaged leaves of larger plants with sharp scissors. Houseplants may also need re-potting and feeding in spring, and some, such as orchids, need specialist feeds to encourage fruits and flowers rather than foliage. SCENT THE AIR Even if you haven't swept and polished every nook and cranny, you could simply throw open the windows, to allow rooms to air and banish any lingering, stale odours of winter. Once that's done, prolong that fresh scent with a spring-friendly scented candle or room diffuser. Bright tangy citrus is a popular scent, which makes any home feel fresh and inviting.
SPRING CLEAN
Clear Home, Clear Head Room to Breathe with Barbara... How did you start? I have always enjoyed tidying and organising my own home and it was when living in a small apartment in Japan that I realised the importance of personal organisation and the value of living with less clutter. I have used this experience to help others declutter and create more space in their lives. What are the benefits? Decluttering reduces anxiety by bringing calm and order to the home. It creates a sense of confidence and self-efficacy; seeing yourself as competent. It acts as a form of mindfulness, creating a sense of calm and order to your home. It saves time – not always having to search for things, and it makes housework quicker. You find lost treasures and items of sentimental value! You will enjoy the items that you love and display them properly. You gain more space by decluttering, organising and storing. What do you offer? My goal is to empower you to regain control over your surroundings, time and possessions. I enable you to tackle the jobs you have been putting off like the spare room, hallway, cupboards, wardrobes, children’s rooms and kitchens. You gain clarity on what is important in your life and what you can let go. I have many ideas for organisation to help you create systems that optimise your space by using a variety of space saving storage techniques. I am discrete, patient, empathetic, non-judgmental, trustworthy and always willing to listen, helping you to create a place where you can relax.
How does a session work? First we have the complimentary personal consultation. I use this to learn how you like to live and what style of organisation will suit your lifestyle. I have a quick tour and together we identify the area or places in your home that are concerning you and causing you the most frustration. We make a plan and schedule which areas to declutter first. After the consultation we start our first session by sorting your possessions into categories: Keep Donate Recycle Once decluttered, it’s time to organise what is left, using as much of your existing storage as possible, perhaps just in a different way. At the end of the session I advise you how to continue and offer practical tips to help you stay organised and prevent the clutter returning. What is Home staging? In addition to helping clients organise the space they are living in, I also offer support if you are selling your home with ‘Home staging’. ‘Home staging’ is an effective way to present your home in its best light, encouraging prospective buyers to imagine themselves living there. Staging your home is an invaluable way to achieve a quicker sale and is a proven way to maximise the sale price. Decluttering is a liberating experience. With my motivation and practical tips, your belongings are stored and accessed easily, creating a comfortable, calm and organised environment for you and your family. I fully believe that the less clutter you have around you, the better you feel and that you will have a home with room to breathe. THE GREAT INDOORS Spring and flowers go hand in hand, but this season designs have gone super-natural, with big, bold blooms, tropical foliage and ultra-bright bouquets. By Gabrielle Fagan... It's partly due to modern techniques making it possible to conjure blooms so pin-point accurate that you feel you can almost pick them, and those advances have helped create sophisticated - but affordable - in-your-face flowery patterns, in vibrant shades which shriek colour and style confidence. If those haven't yet grown on you, choose from the crop of more gentle, romantic, painterly floral effects. "This season, floral designs have their rightful place as stars in the decor show," says Tricia Guild, founder and creative director of Designers Guild. "I've always been greatly inspired by flowers and they feature prominently in many of our collections. Historically, floral fabrics at a window are about extending the eye beyond the immediate physical space of the room, and a floral wallpaper on a feature wall can have a similar effect. Both approaches make it possible to create a vision of your very own garden inside your space." Make your home blooming beautiful and celebrate the great indoors... PURPLE PARADISE Transport yourself to a tropical landscape, with hothouse flowers in plum and purple shades. "Tropical flowers, stylised foliage and botanical references first developed in fashion and have crossed over into interiors," says Louise Collis, designer at wallpaper and fabric specialists, Harlequin Studio. "The resurgence of florals injects this season's interior schemes with a sense of optimism and new beginnings, and the strong palette - which can range from vibrant hues through to deep moody shades - is turning heads and giving interiors an extravagance and richness, while at the same time promoting a feeling of sanctuary and escapism." TIP: Restrict your colour palette to three or four shades, ensuring one is natural, and keep patterns within this group of colours.
Keep floors and ceilings neutral and combine colour with lots of white and pattern, to maintain a sense of harmony. BOHO BUNCH Throw away the rule book and splash on colour and a variety of patterns, for a wild gypsy look. "Homeowners are abandoning beige and embracing colour in their lives, and florals are one of the most decorative ways to make an impact," says Nichola McFall, brand manager at continues overleaf...

The Fabric Box. "We're increasingly seeing a more confident customer making bolder colour choices, and this season sees a real diversity in design, from painterly to ditsy and botanical to abstract. "For a more bohemian approach, mix up patterns, take some risks and you'll create a funky, uncontrived look that's a world away from play-it-safe traditional chintz." TIP: If you're using two or more different patterns together, choose prints with varying scales, so designs don't compete for attention and make the room look too busy. PETAL PINK Colour up with bright pink blooms in pretty-as-a-picture shades, from rose, fuschia and cherry blossom to lipstick pink. "How we use colour in our everyday lives has a big effect on our mood and how we feel about our homes. Replacing a nude lipstick, for example, with a sassy pink one can transform a dull outfit into a glamorous one, and it's the same when you inject colour and pattern into a room," says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design for curtain, blind and shutter specialists, Hillarys. "Florals are a hardy perennial in interiors and the trend for intensely saturated hues, such a lipstick pink and cerise, bears little resemblance to the washed-shades and delicate sprigs of previous seasons. Painterly style designs are coming through strongly and have less focus on realistic precision, and more on artistic impression, brush strokes and a Monet-style interpretation." TIP: Hang small panels of wallpaper and form a frame around them to make them look like a work of art; an ontrend way of brightening up a plain wall.

Patio Perfection... HOW TO CREATE A STYLISH OUTDOOR SPACE FOR THOSE SUMMER INSTA-MOMENTS It's time to prep the patio, deck or garden for al fresco living. Gabrielle Fagan reveals how to 'wow' in the great outdoors... Hang your decor head in shame if you think a patio is just a space to chill and entertain - it's way, way more. Creating a divine deck, top terrace, or punchy patio is vital in today's style stakes, as this is the backdrop for all those summer Insta-shots. (Cute kids, chic friends and adorable pets are optional extras!) "The summer garden's a homage to expressing personal style and there's a move away from 'matchy-matchy sets'" says Vicky Angell, outdoor living buyer for John Lewis. "With celebrity and 'influencer' homes and gardens becoming increasingly accessible through social media, people definitely want a space which impresses. It means the outdoors is becoming more of an investment space and bold statement pieces are on the rise, so it's ready for those 'Instagrammable' moments." Check out these top trends and buys, to transform your outdoor space into a social media 'hot spot' for posting and boasting...
TELL A COLOUR STORY Make it slimline - bistro tables and chairs are on-trend and have a great minimalist feel, which is perfect for compact spaces. "Colour's key for summer, and we've redesigned our Salsa collection in bold, clashing ombre patterns to make a real style statement in a space," says Angell. "Adding cushions, lanterns and even a patterned pouffe brings a bohemian feel and will help personalise a garden. "Perfect for small spaces, or creating 'zones' within a larger garden, sales of bistro sets were up 32% last year, with bright colour metal sets proving popular." PATIO TIP: Create a greater sense of space in a compact area with furniture made of light, hand-woven materials or wire, which have an 'airy' appearance. Paint a wall white and add an outdoor mirror to reflect the light. continues overleaf...

PIMP THE PATIO Just a few new touches may be all it takes to give that space a lift. If there's no room for tubs or shrubs, an artificial plant wall could be just the ticket for adding a splash of green. Import some sunshine colours with a brightly coloured chair and cushion. CONJURE A CHILL-OUT ZONE Squashy sofas that wouldn't be out of place indoors, and garden lighting to ensure the space comes alive at night, are two key features this season. "While many people aspire to create a tranquil setting to relax and unwind, others want the perfect entertaining space, with a mix of formal dining and laid-back lounging for catching up over drinks," says Angell. "Outdoor cooking continues to increase, as people prefer to cook on the patio while chatting to guests. Pizza ovens are a great talking point and there's increasing investing in outdoor cooking solutions, with those priced around £1,500 seeing a 20% increase this year." PATIO TIP: The trend for accessorising shows no sign of slowing down - outdoor rugs, cushions, lighting and lanterns are now ranked as essentials to luxe up a space. DINE OUT STYLE Sticking to a colour theme works indoors and out, and grey and white's an on-trend choice that won't go out of fashion either. Natural materials, such as wood, will sit in harmony with the great outdoors. SET UP A SPACE JUST FOR YOU "Creating a special corner in a garden or patio area, where you can chill and relax, is key," says Angell. "Huge on social media, shapely, inviting chairs and swings are expected to be popular
this summer, with cocoon-shaped designs that work as well indoors as out. "Hanging chairs are a great choice as additional seating for an outside space. They add a fun twist to a garden, can be enjoyed by the whole family and are really versatile." PATIO TIP: Vary sizes and heights of pots, to introduce interest to an area. Style a sofa with accent chairs (or a modular unit) around a central coffee table, just as you would inside.

SUPER SMART SOLO SEATS Spoil yourself with a special seat, where you can enjoy a break on summer days. Accessorise it with a fur throw for cooler evenings, to maximise your time in the garden. SMARTEN UP THE SPACE Don't despair if a full-on revamp is beyond the budget. A dash of flair and a coat of paint could be all that's needed to breathe new life into a dull space, and transform it into one which is summer-smart and ready for chic entertaining. Upcyling will gain extra eco brownie points. Unify a collection of mismatched chairs by painting them all in one shade, or use two, such as blue and white, that complement each other. Turn an old table into a star piece by stencilling a table-top, or tile it. Create a plaster-effect wall: Annie Sloan has a brilliant Scadinavian Pink Chalk Paint which will do the job. Finally, hang plants from ceiling hooks to 'zone' the space - then just settle back and wait for the compliments. PATIO TIP: Mixing indoor and outdoor natural materials will blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Combine rattan, wood, metal, ceramics and glass for a natural, collected feel. TALK TO THE TABLE Just like furniture, table settings shouldn't be too matchy-matchy either. Shake up a display by using a couple of sets together maybe one in neon shades and another in a pattern. A tropical leaf design, such as John Lewis' Eddingtons Tropical Leaf range, will conjure a sultry setting no matter what the weather, and you could ramp up the lush effect by putting a large leaf or miniature cactus beside each place setting.
TABLE TREATS Melamine tableware's so attractive these days, you'll want to use it all year round. Choose brightly coloured ranges with exotic patterns for instant impact - and enjoy the bonus that this durable tableware is pretty well child-proof!

HANGING BASKET MASTERCLASS:
HERE'S HOW TO MAKE THE BEST FLOWER DISPLAY It's time to create a riot of colour with hanging baskets. Hannah Stephenson tries a masterclass to learn the secrets of success... So often my hanging baskets end up looking lacklustre and forlorn, with gaps where filler plants should have gone, holes in my moss liners and a lack of regular watering. However, expert Nathan Syrett, assistant plant manager at Squire's Garden Centres, has been running hanging basket masterclasses at its Stanmore store for a number of years, and offers the following advice to hanging basket hopefuls (including me)... 1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIALS AND PLANTS Go for the biggest basket you can, as this will hold more compost and require slightly less watering than smaller baskets. Metal-framed baskets are ideal, but you will have to line them. Various water-retaining liners include coir and sphagnum moss, although you can even cut up an old woolly jumper to line a basket, which will soak up the water and keep in the compost. If using moss (which you can buy at garden centres), use long strands of it laid laterally across the inside of the basket, working from the bottom, so the moss does not escape out of the holes. Build the lining up in circles until it reaches the top of the basket, and lift it up to make sure you can't see any gaps.
42 | www.life-mags.com
2. MAKE A RESERVOIR Cut a small circle of plastic from your compost bag to make a reservoir in the bottom of your liner, to hold just enough water to keep the compost moist, while still allowing free drainage at the sides. 3. ADD YOUR COMPOST Multipurpose compost, preferably the sort which has added plant food, is ideal, although you will still have to feed your basket plants during the summer, bearing in mind how many of the nutrients will be washed away when you're constantly watering.
When you reach the top of the basket, firm the compost down so there are no air holes.
• Mini diggers, excavators, dumpers and lorries (self drive available) • Topsoil supplied & delivered • Black sand, chippings & hardcore supplied & delivered • Hard landscaping • Large/small excavations undertaken • Demolition • Drainage and Drain Laying • Fencing • Sand Schools 4. CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS If you want your basket to be admired from all sides, choose one larger plant to put in the centre, such as an upright fuchsia or geranium, and select around five other plants to place around it. These could range from trailing petunias and calibrachoa, to bacopa, lobelia, nemesia, diascia and helichrysum, although there are many other suitable plants available.
T: 01534 485687 E: info@baretteplanthire.com www.baretteplanthire.com
5. POSITION THE TALL AND THE SMALL Try positioning your chosen plants on top of the compost before planting, so you can decide which looks best where. Make sure your gaps are even when placing the outer plants.
FULL POOL SERVICE Available to any pool regardless of installation company - CALL NOW
Usually the tallest plant will go in the centre, surrounded by the lower trailers, which need to be planted closer to the edge, but if your basket is going to face in a particular direction, put the biggest plant at the back and the lower trailers in front of it. To minimise any damage when planting, remove each plant from its pot and use the pot alone as the planting template, continues overleaf...

easing it down into the planting hole to make it the right size. Then your plant will slot right in. Cover it with the compost you removed to make space for the hole. Repeat using the plant pot template until all your plants are in.
6. HANG IT UP Hang up your basket on a wall bracket or other hook or frame (some hanging baskets are really heavy, so make sure your bracket is secured tightly and is strong enough to take the weight).
44 | www.life-mags.com
7. BE WATERWISE Water your basket well using a watering can rose. That way, the water will seep into the compost to reach your plants, rather than running straight through it. 8. KEEP IT HEALTHY Keep your basket well watered. In the height of summer you'll need to do it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Feed your basket bedding plants regularly with either plant food or tomato food, following the instructions on the packet, and deadhead often to encourage further blooms.

Lanzarote, one of the Spanish Canary Islands, is located 125 kilometres off the northern coast of Africa and covers 326 square miles. This firmly established tourism destination continues to attract an increasing number of independent travellers keen to explore its natural volcanic beauty, captured by César Manrique, the gifted abstract artist, sculptor and architect who was born in Arrecife, the island’s capital, in 1919. At the age of 25 Manrique moved to Madrid, graduated from the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and then travelled extensively. His talents were duly recognised and his works were displayed in a host of international art exhibitions including New York’s Guggenheim Museum. Manrique left New York in 1966 and returned to Lanzarote at a time when local authorities were developing its tourism industry. He was highly influential in the promotion of sustainability, dedicated to protecting Lanzarote’s natural heritage and culture and he designed a number of attractions merging nature and art. These unique sites are Lanzarote’s most popular spots for visitors.

Manrique’s first project, Jameous Del Agua, located in Haría, is an exceptional cultural centre and was constructed in 1966. The partially collapsed volcanic lava tunnel, which was formed by the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona 4,000 years ago, covers a distance of six kilometres and leads out to the sea. Visitors to the site explore the caverns within the volcanic walls by following a spiral staircase, which leads down to a cafeteria and bar area and there is a small museum with exhibits including interactive features and a video with information on the world’s active volcanoes and striking images of lava flow. Descending further, and a beautiful natural lake inhabited by a number of tiny albino crabs, a species unique to the island, comes into view. By following a meandering path, beside the lake and with the daylight flooding the area, the visitor is above the ground within a garden of lush palm trees bursting with colourful bougainvillea surrounding a stunning pool. Pausing for a breather and sitting on one of the white benches I contemplated on Manrique and his extraordinary talent. To learn more, I visited Manqrique’s residence, which is located on Calle Jorge Luis Borges in Tahíche and is now a museum. continues overleaf...

This mesmerising home, built over five volcanic bubbles, reflects a captivating fusion of contemporary design and the natural environment. Built within a warren of underground spaces and tunnels, created by molten lava, the site includes an exquisite turquoise swimming pool, which was constructed in a buried space, and the relaxation areas create a feeling of absolute tranquillity. Manrique’s studio, at ground level, features fine examples of his works and the enormous windows saturate the interior with natural light affording breath taking views of the surroundings. The César Manrique Foundation, established in 1982 and based at his home, continues to oppose the construction of high-rise properties, ensures that there are no unsightly billboards distracting the eye from natural surroundings and encourages the island’s residents to paint their properties in bright colours. There is little doubt that Manrique’s influence has been rewarded as Lanzarote was recognised as a Unesco biosphere reserve in 1993, only one year after he died. Another popular attraction is the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, named after the island’s only active volcano and one of the core areas of the biosphere reserve covering an area of 51 square miles. The last eruptions took place in the 18th and 19th centuries and the core temperature, caused by a constantly baking magma 4 kilometres below the surface, ranges from 100 to 600 centigrade at a depth of 43 feet. I arrived at Timanfaya early in the morning and embarked on the coach tour to follow the volcano route, as visitors are not permitted to walk through the park, ensuring its protection. Throughout the journey, passengers are richly rewarded with astonishing sights of the solidified lava fields, vast areas covered with black and copper coloured sand, and the eerie shapes of volcanic rock formations. Islote de Hilario (the black volcano) soars 510 metres into the sky and bathed in the golden hues of the morning sun, I was enthralled by Mother Nature’s beauty. At the end of my adventure, and with the smell of sulphur in my nostrils, I stopped off at El Diablo, the park’s restaurant, and after admiring the stunning views, I went inside to see the lava stove, which is a hole in the ground with a cast iron grill on the top and I viewed my fish luncheon cooking, immersed in the geothermal heat. Savouring the succulent flavours I glanced out of the window and noticed a member of staff demonstrating nature’s geothermal force by pouring a bucket of water into the ground, which instantly created a geyser of exploding steam. He was immediately greeted with hearty cheers and spontaneous applause from a captivated audience.

For brave souls keen to get up close and personal with a volcano, Parque De Los Volcanes, which surrounds the Parque Timanfaya, offers a 3 kilometre trail towards the interior of the volcano. The solidified lava features encrusted Olivine crystals; a green coloured stone, known as peridot, which has been discovered in meteorites and is used in local jewellery. Due to the harsh habitat there is a shortage of indigenous creatures in the area but beware of any lurking Death’s Head Hawkmoths, which have a human skull shaped pattern on the thorax, as it is said that they bring misfortune. Bird lovers will be enchanted by the opportunity to spot common kestrels, the Hoopoe, Berthelot’s pipit, Southern Grey Shrikes and the Little Egret. Another popular spot for hikers is the 6.6 mile trail from El Golfo, a small fishing village, to Charco de los Clicos, also called the Green Lagoon, which lies within an inactive volcano. The vivid green colour is as a result of the Ruppia Maritima algae and the striking hues contrasting with the blue sky is unforgettable. Following my arduous explorations I was more than ready to experience the highest levels of comfort and privacy and I stayed in a secluded villa, which features three spacious bedrooms, and the heated, south facing, outdoor pool measuring 8x5 metres, which is surrounded by comfortable sun loungers, provided the ideal spot for an afternoon snooze and with an enormous patio, a barbecue, and a sheltered dining area, it was just the ticket. Featured on the HomeAway website, this old Canarian finca (a typical, traditional property), offers high ceilings with pine wood beams and varnished wooden flooring and is located in the Los Mojones area of Puerto del Carmen; only a ten minute walk to the sandy beach. Furnishings are contemporary; the lounge features plump, comfortable sofas and foot stools and a huge television with more than enough stations to keep fully informed of news overseas. Every appliance and gadget is provided and the kitchen is ideal for those capable of rustling up some tempting home cooked meals. Alas, my skills are lacking in that area and I headed for the local supermarket, only a short stroll away. That evening as I munched on my meal of freshly baked bread with slivers of cold meats and goat's cheese and accompanied by a tipple of Rubicon Moscatel I raised my glass in honour of César Manrique and reflected on his words; 'I want to extract harmony from the earth to unify it with my feeling for art'. There is no doubt that Manrique achieved his objective and Lanzarote remains devoted to him. 'Top tip': Flights Fly direct from Southend, Gatwick or Luton to Lanzarote and save on fares. Katie Wright looks to the catwalks for spring fashion inspiration... There was a time in the not too distant past when you would seldom see denim on a catwalk.
3. COLOURED DENIM JACKETS Embrace the citrus brights trend with a colourful denim jacket. From lemon yellow to tangerine and rust, these warm hues are perfect for
The runway shows were supposed to be aspirational, so they said, a showcase for the most glamorous gowns and the swankiest suits; this was no place for a pair of jeans. Now? That couldn't be further from the truth. As the line between high fashion and streetwear continues to blur, denim has become a catwalk mainstay, even with brands known for their uber-glam aesthetic, like Dolce and Gabbana, Dior and Balmain. In fact, at the SS19 shows, designers were particularly denim obsessed, with Balmain's Olivier Rousteing creating a variety of distressed and deconstructed jackets and skirts, while Dior and Celine both showed tie-dye baggy jeans.
pairing with coordinating shorts or a contrasting slip dress.
The Eighties effect was also in full swing at Proenza Schouler and Isabel Marant, where acid-wash dresses were teamed with slouchy boots.
4. DENIM JUMPSUITS This season's take on dungarees, denim jumpsuits are a step up from the classic all-in-one.
What's great about this season's denim is that it's about more than just jeans, and now the high street is offering catwalkinspired pieces that will liven up your wardrobe.
Whether cropped or full-length, a jumpsuit is your short-cut to cool and casual spring style just add a T-shirt, trainers and a leather saddle bag.
Take your pick from spring's denim delights with these five key looks... 1. DENIM DRESSES While baggy jeans might be making a come back, when it comes to dresses, we're seeing a trend towards feminine and fitted styles. Whether belted, button-down or zip-up, these frocks are fabulous for showing off your curves, and can be layered over a rollneck or T-shirt on cooler days. 2. PAPERBAG SHORTS If you've been wearing the same low-slung cut-off jean shorts for as many summers as you can remember, it's time for a change.
5. DENIM BAGS As for accessories, they've had the indigo treatment too, with everything from casual cross-body styles to chic little evening bags on offer.
Switch your Daisy Dukes for a pair of Eighties-style paperbag shorts - you'll thank us if you do. The high waist is really flattering and the acid-wash finish is catwalk approved.

DO I NEED A VITAMIN TOP UP:Layout 1 03/05/2019 14:15 Page 1
DO YOU NEED A VITAMIN TOP-UP? A whole host of health niggles and full-blown medical conditions can be caused by low levels of vitamins and minerals. Lisa Salmon asks the experts about deficiency warning signs and how to combat them Everyday symptoms like cracked lips, headaches, dandruff and bad breath, could just be one of those things - or they might be signs of a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Itchy or dry skin, low mood, thinning hair, low libido, tiredness and even stress could all also indicate you need more of a certain nutrient. Most of the 'symptoms' are niggles that'd be great to wipe out with a simple change of diet, yet recent research suggests up to six in 10 of us have no idea what health complaints might have a vitamin or mineral deficiency at their root. Despite this, a fifth of people have suffered from a symptom or health condition caused by a vitamin or mineral deficiency. The research, by supplement retailer Healthspan also found 36% of those polled have made a conscious effort to boost their intake of certain vitamins and minerals because they felt they were lacking in them, while 28% have even sought professional help over the issue. LOW LEVEL PROBLEM Dr Carrie Ruxton, a dietician at the Health Supplements Information Service, says clinical deficiency in vitamins and minerals leading to full-blown medical symptoms is rare. However, a high proportion of Brits have low blood levels of key nutrients, such as vitamin D, which affects up to four in 10 adults and teenagers. Other examples of nutrients commonly at low levels include iron (it's believed one in 10 women and girls are anaemic as a result), folate (which is in the spotlight for increasing the risk of birth defects) and iodine, where low blood levels are seen in half of young women. "These sub-optimal nutrient levels can create long-term health problems, such as osteoporosis or fatigue, as well as putting the next generation at risk," says Ruxton.
GP and Healthspan expert Dr Sarah Brewer says an estimated 40% of UK adults take at least one dietary supplement, and many of them are also taking one or more prescribed drugs. "Although the risk of serious interactions between vitamins, minerals and prescribed drugs is low, many drugs appear to deplete body stores of vitamins and minerals," she says. "Many popular dietary ingredients also deplete levels of certain vitamins and minerals and can interfere with the absorption of food supplements."
IN THE BLOOD As well as this, Ruxton says a significant proportion of people don't achieve recommended intakes of minerals and vitamins, including selenium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, riboflavin and vitamin A. But while symptoms such as lacklustre hair, brittle nails and tiredness could well be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency, it's hard to be sure without taking a blood test.
FIVE SETS OF SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR
"Many other lifestyle issues impact on health, libido and mood, such as sleep quality, alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, a sedentary indoor lifestyle and lack of physical activity," Ruxton points out. "The best way to improve your health is to make a holistic change, involving a balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrains, limited alcohol consumption, no smoking, and at least 60 minutes daily of outdoor physical activity.
Symptoms: Cracked lips, thinning hair, split and brittle nails plus white spots on nails, tiredness, cold hands and feet Could be low: Iron Find it in: Red meat, red peppers, kale, tofu, strawberries, red kidney beans, kiwis, lemons, flaxseed, chicken liver
"Adding a vitamin and mineral supplement, plus a fish oil if you don't eat much fish, is a useful way to ensure you meet dietary recommendations".
Here are some common complaints that may be linked to low vitamin and mineral levels - and the foods to help you top up... Symptoms: Persistent dandruff Could be low: Biotin or vitamin B7, essential fatty acids Find it in: Fresh salmon, almonds, peanut butter, sunflower seeds
Symptoms: Psoriasis Could be low: Vitamin D, plus mixed vitamin B, zinc and essential fatty acids Find it in: Eggs, prawns, fresh tuna, mushrooms
BAD MEDICINE?
Symptoms: Restless legs Could be low: Magnesium, iron or folate Find it in: Avocado, dried oregano, bulgur wheat, dark chocolate
The Healthspan survey also found almost half of Brits are unaware that taking medications, antibiotics and even drinking tea and coffee, may affect how you absorb vitamins and minerals.
Symptoms: Low mood Could be low: Vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium Find it in: Quinoa, salmon, avocado, French beans

HydraFacial at The Laser Centre a review by Juanita Shield-Laignel... Conveniently situated within The Island Medical Centre, Gloucester Street, The Laser Centre has been established since 1997 and flourishing under the Directorship of Julie Naidu, offers many of the island’s cosmetic needs... Julie says “I’ve been heading up the Laser Centre for over 21 years now and with my background in Nursing, am satisfied we offer the best possible service; cutting edge, innovative, non-surgical treatments, including injectables such as wrinkle relaxing injections and fillers. Very experienced, my staff and I are constantly updating, remaining current and moving with the times.” Recently Julie invited me to experience a HydraFacial. Loved by the Stars and sporting lots of natural products, I was keen to find out more. My therapist for the procedure was to be Kathrin, who lost no time in conducting a questionnaire with me to ensure she had all the correct information to give me the best treatment possible. My skin needs logged and any possible contra-indications discussed, Kathrin explained the procedure and it’s benefits – HydraFacial is designed to reverse damage from environmental aging, protects your skin and improves overall skin health, boosting natural collagen production and hydration. I was eager to start. Kathrin invited me to lie on a treatment couch and covered me with a blanket for comfort. I had already been informed that the HydraFacial equipment uses a sucking motion, almost like a mini vacuum, but at the same time water, plus the special ingredients chosen especially for my skin
needs, including essential oils and honey would be being fed into my skin. Kathrin began by manually cleansing my face and then started the 5 step procedure. Step 1. Deep cleansing and exfoliating my skin, using the HydraFacial nozzle passed over my entire face to remove debris at a deeper level than ordinary cleansing can attain. Kathrin’s description of how the sucking would feel was spot on and not unpleasant. Step 2. Was the application of a peel, left only for just over a minute for me as it was my first HydraFacial. Kathrin had prepared me to expect a tingling sensation but again, this was not unpleasant. Step 3. This is called the ‘Extract’ part of the procedure and again the HydraFacial wand was used to remove any debris left in the pores and then nourish with intense moisturisers. Step 4. ‘Hydrate’ to saturate the skin with anti-oxidants to maximise glow. Kathrin checked in with me again to ensure I was ok. I mumbled that yes everything was fine but I confess, endorphins had kicked in and I was on another planet somewhere…completely relaxed. Then Step 5. ‘Rejuvenation’ where a red and infrared LED was passed over my skin designed to reduce redness and further stimulate collagen production.
The 45 minute procedure over, I was invited to sit up slowly and offered a glass of water. Kathrin held a mirror up for me to see the results of her work. I was certainly glowing…my skin looked amazing. Kathrin gave me lots of aftercare advice to ensure the best possible and longest lasting results and sent me on my way. On returning to the office my colleagues commented that my skin looked great and the next day my face felt super hydrated and soft. I was even amazed to see that a small over producing keratin patch that is dry and scaly and bothers me from time to time had reduced greatly in size and softened in texture. On this basis alone I would definitely revisit The Laser Centre for another HydraFacial, let alone all the other wonderful benefits including the feeling of relaxation and the knowledge that I was in the expert and professional care of Kathrin.
Thank you The Laser Centre….what a wonderful experience…

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
The power of the sun.... By Penny Downes of PENNYFEATHERS Beauty, St Clements As the sun carries on shining and I feel the strength of its rays gently warm my skin, I decided to take the advantage to use this as my opening article. Clients, friends and family members know that sunscreen is my bug bare and know how much I shout about it being not only a crucial anti ageing step but in many cases a life saver. We are well aware of what the sun can do to the skin and its down sides. Although most of us love the feeling we get from the warmth on our bodies and the good feeling the Endorphins leave us with, we still risk the down sides for the tiny benefits we get. As mentioned earlier I love the fact that whilst writing the bright ball of fire is shining down on us and the heat is filtering through my salon window, it's a real boost. However I am all too aware of the damages and down sides and feel the guilt setting in when I consider basking in it. At 17 I read a book that changed my life, a mans personal account of loosing his one true love to skin cancer after not protecting his skin well enough when living abroad. From that emotional day I promised myself that, daily I would apply a factor 30 and have up kept that promise resulting in a porcelain complexion. I couldn't agree more that we need a little sun to boost our feel good factors, give us strong bones from the Vitamin D, the glow is lovely and we do feel better with a little colour but my key point is everything should be in little amounts. Protection is the best prevention for sun damage and helps slow the signs of ageing right down. Regularly checking your skin for changes is also the best prevention for skin cancers developing. Moles, freckles and skin lesions that can develop changes in size, texture and colour can all be alarm bells that should never be ignored. I always recommend to take annual photos of areas that may be changeable as this will give you the best comparison for the future. Jersey is an island loves the sun but we also are fully aware of the damage, regular skin clinics are held by charities to help prevent skin cancer and should be supported by us all as skin cancer doesn't discriminate.
I cringe as a Skin Care Therapist when I'm face to face with a handbag skin, not only do I think ouch that's looking dry, crusty, flakey and sore but I know that all that melanin has surfaced, it isn't there for the good but there to protect and restore the skin and its now gone too far. I still find it hard to see the point of the look and why people think they look great. We need sunscreen, the sun is strong and yes we are in the Channel Islands but we need the protection, even on the wettest day as long as there is day light we are getting UV Ageing and UV Cancer Causing rays. Titanium Dioxide based sunscreens give you the best coverage. This ingredient masks the sun rays away from the skin to stop the dangerous rays inhibiting the skin and causing damage. I learnt at a few years ago at a medical presentation that most sun blemishes and cancers are found in the most unusual places. For example gents get them on the ears or behind the ears from where they have short hair and its actually their Barbers who notice them, for women commonly they are found on the parting again mostly discovered by their hair stylist. I for one ensure I check clients as they visit me in treatments, especially when I see a change in a mole or skin blemish I tell clients and advise them that I see a difference and to get it checked out. I build trust with clients and put them at ease. I sound like a broken record for many but protection is the best form of staying young. A sunscreen is the best anti ageing cream , it stops the damage from happening and prevents the scary skin damage of a sun worshipper. We need to slip, slap, slop these creams on to keep our skin protected if we don't it can't protect itself. I'm not saying stay out of the sun thats impossible and not an option for many and a little bit is good but the fake cow hide handbag look isn't, get a tan from a bottle, be safe, be aware and be wise, protect and prevent that's all I can say. www.penny-feathers.co.uk

What Makes An Exceptional Carer? At Cambrette we believe that being a carer is one of the most fulfilling careers you can have. While it can be challenging at times, knowing that you are making a positive difference in people’s lives is very rewarding. That is why, while you need the right experience and qualifications, the best carer’s also tend to have the following personal qualities… 1. RESPECT FOR OTHERS When someone gets older, sometimes their ability to be independent reduces, along with their cognitive function this can lead to people around them becoming a little patronising. Exceptional care is not about just providing physical support; it’s about finding a way to engage with people emotionally, and respect is the key to doing this well.
6. CONFIDENCE & OPTIMISM Some of the best carers we know are confident and generally optimistic people. If you have a sunny disposition, it can be very helpful, as some older people can suffer from low moods. A carer should ideally be someone who has confidence in what they are doing as well as having a positive tone. This type of person is often best at engaging with clients in day-to-day tasks.
2. COMPASSION & EMPATHY Compassion and empathy are amongst the most important qualities for a carer to have. As people get older, it can be a confusing, challenging and sometimes upsetting process. The best carers have empathy with this and understand the emotions that people are go-ing through, as they adjust to changes in their lives.
7. BEING OBSERVANT The wellbeing of an older person can change very suddenly. The best carers will notice any signs of deterioration very quickly and address them immediately. Things like a lack of appetite, weight gain or loss, increased irritability or confusion, can all indicate a possible underlying problem.
3. COMMUNICATION The best carers are often also the best communicators. Simply by communicating clearly and consistently, you can provide important reassurance for clients and their families. It is also essential when you are working as part of a wider team, who may include other carers, healthcare professionals or even family members. 4. DEPENDABILITY A lot of carers have to be responsible for making sure that clients do things like stay hydrated, eat regularly take medicine and get to appointments on time. The consequences of these things not happening can be serious, and even life-threatening in some cases. That is why being dependable and committed is essential. 5. PATIENCE, (AND MORE PATIENCE!) Sometimes spending time with older adults can be a little frustrating! Small things can seem big for people who are losing some of their mental capacities, and memory issues can also lead to repetition. Easy tasks can also take a lot longer to finish, which can create irritability and frustration, and at times even aggression. The best carers are patient enough to cope with these situations when they arise and to stay calm and kind.
8. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE Often people who become carers have personal experience of caring for a loved one or watching others in their families do so. This is not essential, but we often found that those who have witnessed this in their own lives have additional empathy for their clients. 9. WILLINGNESS TO LEARN From mandatory training to the RQF Diploma the best carers are people who are excited and willing to study and train. With ever-changing regulations, and also advances in medical care and technology, this is a career we will always need to be learning. 10. CARING! It may sound obvious, but the best carers have to care! Providing care for other people can be a tough job at times, which is why it is essential that you genuinely enjoy looking after others.
At Cambrette we are always looking for people who have this passion to join our team.

Spring Clean Your Life... Mark Shields explains how… DECIDE, DESIGN, DO AND ENJOY We are now officially into Spring and as we wake from our slumber some of you may be finding your clothes feeling a little tighter after the sluggishness of those wintry nights in front of the TV. Spring cleaning is not just for your houses, so use this activity to clean up your health and get rid of that excess baggage (particularly around your waistline). Over half of islanders will experience a change of mood as the air gets warmer and the days get longer with lighter evenings and lighter moods. The winter seems a long way behind us as we move into the spring. With this change of mood comes a renewed motivation to do things differently, achieve more, procrastinate less. The perfect time for individuals to look at their life and have the motivation to make changes, do things differently etc is right now, early on in the spring. With any self coaching plan I always guide individuals to decide, design and do with what I always refer to as the big 5 strategies to examine in life as we move to do things differently, make changes etc. THE BIG 5 AREAS OF LIFE ARE • Educate your mind • Strengthen your body • Find an expert to model • Focus on what you have not what you don’t have • Get your challenge into perspective. Acknowledge however challenged you feel there is always many people worse off
DECIDE Decide what your goals for change are. You need to do this across the BIG 5 AREAS OF LIFE outlined above. EG If you are wishing to lose some weight, decide how much and by when. If you are overweight, 2 lbs per week is a healthy gradual loss to aim for. Decide what it is that you would like to cook in the next week and make a list of the ingredients that you will need to shop for. Cooking from scratch is the best way to control what you are putting in your body so look for quick and easy recipes online. There are also some great examples of quick and easy cooking on the various Social Media channels. Decide what exercise you will incorporate into your schedule. Be honest with yourself about time. off the bus or train one stop beforehand. Or you can incorporate it into other leisure time. If you enjoy a regular TV soap you could factor in exercise whilst watching at home or by joining a gym with TV on its’ equipment. High Intensity Interval Training has become popular mainstream through people like Joe Wicks (AKA The Body Coach) and they can fit well into your working week as some can be as little as 25 minutes long, without the need for gym equipment, although some require some simple hand weights which can easily be purchased online or in the high street. You can also find many free workout videos on YouTube, as well as, apps for abdominal workouts, yoga, meditation, Couch to 5K is a popular starting point if you have not exercised for some time.
DESIGN The day before your shopping arrives, design how you want your cupboard to look – Start by removing everything that is past it’s sell by date. This includes condiments, cans, jars. Whilst having a clear out if there are any foods that are not on your healthy eating plan – ditch them. Whether they are in you or in your rubbish bin they are no good to you either way. Make sure there is plenty of room for the fresh stuff so wash out the chiller section of your fridge ready to fill with colour. Research shows us that eating a rainbow of plant based foods that are filled with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants reduces the chance of conditions like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol and obesity. Ensure you have plenty of containers to decant ingredients into or storage containers for things like cheese so that once opened they will not harden and ruin. Design a regular exercise workout that is going to work for you. Is it early in the morning or after you come home at night? Do you have a friend who can come with you so that you can support each other or do you prefer to stick on your headphones and lose yourself in the music whilst exercising.
DO Online shopping is so convenient these days particularly if you are working. Online shopping also helps you to avoid impulse buying. Include a list of fresh fruit and vegetables that you can have available to grab whenever you feel hungry and need a snack. Choose what you need, search for it and press “Buy” then “Checkout” – it is so simple. Portion control – a healthy plate should contain one quarter protein, one quarter carbohydrate and half a plate of vegetables (the more colourful the better to increase your antioxidant levels) – Make sure this is now part of your habit when you are prepping your meals. If your dinner plates are larger than normal, ditch them and buy a smaller dinner plate that will offer you an ample portion of food per sitting. It is incredible how this can make a difference when trying to lose weight. Do some exercise three times per week – if you go for high impact intensity training (HIIT) which are short bursts of exercise which burn

If you do not have gym equipment try to do as many squats in 1 min then rest; then jumping jacks, then rest; then lunges then rest; jog on the spot, burpees – any mixture of these exercises will have the same effect. 5 water workouts to embrace this Spring and Summer Overhaul your fitness and get a nature fix. With warmer weather on the way, Liz Connor reveals how to get in shape while making a splash... When it comes to total-body toning, the beach is your best friend - or the lake or river, for that matter. As well as being fun, water sports boast a host of health and fitness benefits, and water-based workouts are crazy-good for improving balance, stamina and building muscle. We don't need to remind you that getting outdoors during spring and summer also means you can get a hit of all-important vitamin D too, which helps to maintain healthy bones, regulate insulin levels and keep your immune system ticking over. So, while you might usually spend a trip to the seaside building sandcastles or lying on a towel with a good book - why not add in an hour or two of adrenaline-pumping activity? The island is surrounded by water so we really have no excuse not to make the most of our local scenery.Whether it's swimming in wild ponds or boarding through the waves, here are just a few calorie-blitzing water sports and activities to consider...

1. STAND-UP PADDLE BOARDING Also known as SUP, stand-up paddle boarding has quickly become the trendiest summer sport of choice for toned celebs Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston and Abbey Clancy are all big fans. SUP is basically a variation on surfing that involves balancing on a board while using a paddle to drive yourself through the water. It might sound easy, but 20 minutes of driving your paddle against the water's natural resistance is enough to set your arms, shoulders and back on fire. Almost every muscle in the body is utilised in the effort to stay balanced on the board too, engaging your leg and core muscles alongside the upper body. As it's relatively low-impact and gentle though, SUP is a great alternative for runners suffering from ongoing shin splints or athletes recovering from injury, as it provides a full-body workout without putting extra strain on the joints. 2. KAYAKING Anyone who's spent an afternoon in a kayak will know that it's a pretty killer workout for whittling your abs. Specifically, repetitively
HEALTH AND WELLBEING
paddling from left to right forces the abdomen to twist, creating a similar effect to the brutal Russian Twists you might normally do at the gym. Kayaking is also a great strength-builder for your arms. Whether you're an advanced kayaker who's pounding rapids, or taking it easy on a calm lake, the water's resistance is a tough workout for the biceps, triceps, shoulders and lats. 3. SURFING There's a reason why the surfers you often see riding the waves in Cornwall and Devon 'and locally of course!' all have strong and lean physiques. Not only is the adrenaline-pumping sport a really exhilarating way to wash away stress, but surfing provides an intense upper body and core workout that shreds fat fast - as the sport relies on your ability to paddle against the current and jump up onto the board while you're in motion. It's also a mean cardiovascular workout that pushes your heart into its target zone (65%-85%), which enhances your body's ability to supply oxygen-rich blood to the working muscles. 4. WAKEBOARDING
the skill. A huge amount of physical demand is placed on the body, engaging your core and stabiliser muscles as you work to bend and balance on the board. While you're riding, you twist your trunk to chop and change direction with your legs - helping to build mean abdominal strength that will serve you well in other types of sport too. 5. WINDSURFING There aren't many outdoor sports that will be as demanding on your core as windsurfing. As you cut through the waves, you need to use your entire body to steer yourself in the right direction without toppling over into the water (Expect to feel sore and achy after a day of manoeuvring the mast). The great thing about windsurfing, though, is that it's much easier to learn than many other watersports - you can usually get up and running on a large beginner's board with a small sail in your first lesson. If you're not sure how to get started, you can get in touch with Absolute Adventures, Jersey's number one watersports and activity provider. Simply visit: www.absoluteadventures.je for further information.
A hybrid of surfing and water-skiing, wakeboarding isn't for the faint-hearted. The daredevil sport involves trying to stay upright on a short, wide board while being towed along the water by a motorboat. Rubber bindings keep your feet firmly planted on the board, and advanced wakeboarders will throw in some aerial tricks and moves too. It might sound like the boat is doing all the hard work, but you need a decent level of fitness plus strength to be able to master

JERSEY BOAT SHOW
THE BARCLAYS JERSEY BOAT SHOW will take place from SATURDAY 4TH MAY TO MONDAY 6TH MAY 2019 Frequently referred to (and rightly so!) as the “largest free-entry event in the Channel Islands”, the 12th annual Barclays Jersey Boat Show will take place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend of Saturday 4th to Monday 6th May 2019. Taking place in and around the award-winning St Helier Marina and adjacent Weighbridge Place, the show is organised by Ports of Jersey with the operational support of local specialists 3D Events. First staged in 2008 as an opportunity to showcase Jersey’s marine leisure industry to a wider audience, the event continues to grow in terms of size and reputation, consistently attracting in excess of 30,000+ visitors over the three days. While the show’s remit remains firmly on showcasing the local industry it is its reflection of its popularity among traders and the public that now sees it include leisure and lifestyle products and activities, opening itself to a wider audience and creating a genuine community focused event. The show remains entirely self-funded by Ports of Jersey with no public investment or government grant given. Commercial sponsorship and exhibitor fees allow organisers to stage the event and retain its free entry policy. In 2019, title sponsors Barclays will be celebrating its 10th anniversary supporting the Jersey Boat Show year and over the years it has raised over £80,000 for its nominated charities. With such a special anniversary to look forward to the theme of the 2019 show will be ‘celebration’ For the 2019 show, organisers are working with local not for profit group, Plastic Free Jersey with the aim of working towards a sustainable event. The maritime industry is at the heart of the environmental movement and must endeavour to protect our oceans for future generations to enjoy. We are working with exhibitors to provide guidance and advice on how to actively reduce waste, particularly non-recyclable waste vat the event. FREELANCE JERSEY We have the all new Lexus Ux on show. You can see this outstanding self-charging Hybrid at our stand on Albert Pier.

10 EASY WAYS TO EASE YOUR HAY FEVER SYMPTOMS THIS SUMMER Chiara Fiorillo reveals some handy tips for keeping sneezes, sniffles and watery eyes at bay It's almost summer here in the UK, which means people will be starting to worry about the return of their hay fever symptoms. Also known as allergic rhinitis, this irritating condition is an allergic reaction to pollen that usually gets worse between late March and September, when its warm and humid. It's estimated that 40% of the population suffer from hay fever, and even with closed windows, pollen can find its way indoors and prevent people from going about their day-to-day life. The most common symptoms are usually caused when our bodies, in contact with the outside, produce allergic antibodies to proteins in tree and grass pollen. When pollen is inhaled, the proteins cause the antibodies to burst and release histamine. It's this defence system that triggers the sneezing, itching, sore eyes and runny nose that many of us experience in the warmer months. In the longer-term, symptoms can cause airways to inflame and block, resulting in poor sleep, infections or sinusitis. This can also lead to the skin around the eyes becoming swollen. The main triggers of hay fever are tree pollen, grass pollen, weed pollen and fungal spores, with grass pollen being the most common; it affects up to 90% of those who are unlucky enough to experience hay fever.
1. GIVE YOUR HOUSE A GOOD VACUUM Need an excuse for a spring clean? "Vacuuming is one of the best things you can do to reduce pollen particles indoors," says Sara Alsen, communications director from Blueair. "Make sure your vacuum cleaner is fitted with a good filter that doesn't re-release the pollen particles back into the air." She recommends buying one that uses a bag, as they're the best at trapping dust. "Also look for one with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to remove at least 99.97% of ultra-small particles that can cause health problems," she adds. 2. USE A WET CLOTH TO CLEAN SURFACES AND FLOORS Just like dust, pollen can land on surfaces and floors and remain there, unseen to the naked eye. "Instead of cleaning with a feather duster, make sure you clean all surfaces with a damp cloth or microfiber mop, which can remove smaller particles better, and ensure that you're not just spreading them around your home," says Alsen.
Allergic rhinitis is usually treated with anti-histamines, such as Cetirizine and Loratadine. However, there are some other nonpharmaceutical remedies that could help you feel better. Here are just a few you can try next time you get that itchy nasal feeling...

3. LEAVE SHOES AND CLOTHING BY THE DOOR To make sure you don't end the day with an unwelcome dose of pollen, shed your coat, shoes and clothing as you enter your home. "Pollen clings to your clothing, as well as shoes and hair," says Alsen, "so use a mat to wipe off your shoes or, even better leave them by the door."
8. USE A FACE MASK WHEN OUTDOORS Anything you can do to stop pollen getting into your nose will help stop hay fever symptoms. "Face masks are rare in the UK, but can be an effective way of filtering out pollen from the air you breathe," says Alsen, adding: "A good face mask can make outdoor life bearable again, when pollen counts are high."
4. SHOWER AND WASH YOUR HAIR AFTER HAVING BEEN OUTSIDE A cold shower could be just what you need to calm your symptoms, as water blasts pollen from the body before it can irritate your nose and eyes. "During the summer months, we carry a lot of pollen into the home with us, so it's a good idea to shower and wash your hair when you've been outside, as the particles can easily be brought indoors," says Alsen.
9. TRY RED LIGHT THERAPY Getting a good night's sleep during the summer months could be as easy as trying a 'nose probe' for three minutes before bed.
5. USE ROOM AIR PURIFIERS The polluted air from outside can add to indoor pollutants that irritate our sinuses, including cigarette smoke, scented candles and stain removers. "Air purifiers remain the most efficient way to remove these airborne pollutants, helping individuals breathe healthier and relieve many allergy symptoms," says Alsen. 6. USE IN-CAR AIR PURIFIERS While pollen tends to spend most of its time outside, it can be hard to keep it out of your car, too. "The air inside the car can be up to 15 times more polluted than on the road outside," says Alsen, who adds: "A good air-purifier can remove the pollen inside your car in four to six minutes." 7. CHECK THE POLLEN COUNT AND ADAPT YOUR DAILY ROUTE ACCORDINGLY Most cities in the UK provide pollen maps, such as the Pollen Forecast published by the Met Office (metoffice.gov.uk). "Mornings and breezy days are usually the worst," says Alsen, "but this can vary from one region to another." Pollution can worsen the effects too, so if you live in a big city, it may be a good idea to avoid being outside during rush hours.
66 | www.life-mags.com
10. USE VASELINE Got a spare pot of Vaseline at home? Get smearing... "Some people find that putting a smear inside each of your nostrils can ease soreness and stop pollen in its tracks," says Anshu Bhimbat, a pharmacist from LloydsPharmacy. Bhimbat adds that if your hay fever is persistent and affecting your day-to-day life, it's advisable to seek advice and treatment from a pharmacist to alleviate the symptoms. They can recommend everything from eye drops and nasal sprays, to antihistamine tablets.

Celebrating 60 years... AND NOT A HINT OF RETIREMENT!
The Minis creator Sir Alec Issigonis was a genius; 60 years ago he created a car that would revolutionise motoring and become one of the most famous and stand out British icons of the time, and still remains an icon today. The Classic Mini Breakfast Club Jersey will be celebrating in style this year at the International Motoring Festival weekend, local cars will be attending as well as cars from the UK. The club was formed about 10 years ago and started off with 3 people; Lee Hotton, Joey Manning & Sebastian Boudier. The 3 members used to meet at St Catherines every weekend for breakfast and a chat, hence the name Classic Mini Breakfast Club Jersey! Since then the group has grown in numbers substantially, and the club now meet every 3rd Sunday of the month. The International Motoring Festival 2019 is set to be bigger and better this year, and if you have a classic Mini we want to hear from you. Almost everyone you talk to says that they have once owned a classic Mini in their lives, it makes us wonder where they all are now. Do they even still exist? To help us celebrate our 60th anniversary we are delighted to announce that Lee Pegrum will be attending the Jersey

International Motoring Festival on Saturday 1st June with her monster mini! Lee Horton’s ‘Mini Cooper S’, Sebastian Boudier’s ‘Paul Smith Limited Edition’ and many more! Something for everyone. The club will also be in the lineup of cars that go along Victoria Avenue before the moonlight sprints. “All members and non-members are welcome to participate as this will be just a few of the great attractions going on this year. We would love to have 60 Minis in attendance,” Jane Anne Tirel said - Classic Mini Breakfast Club member. The Classic Mini Breakfast Club will also be enjoying an island tour for both local and visiting minis on 2nd June which will incorporate a few laps in the active arena at the motoring festival. And it goes without saying, we are also very passionate about restoring them and keeping them on the road, so if you own a Classic Mini we would love to see you. We all share a passion for the little car that is so iconic. We meet on the 3rd Sunday of every month 10.30 at St Clements Parish Hall and go for a drive and end up somewhere for a chat and a bite to eat…very sociable and great fun with like-minded people. For more information you can find us on Facebook: Classic Mini Breakfast Club Jersey or alternatively you can send us a direct message on Facebook to either: Lee Hotton, Seb Boudier or Jane Anne Tirel. We are like one big family and always excited to welcome new members.

WINE
Behind the Label by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant
Wine labels can be classified as traditional and these have been similar in style for, in some cases, centuries whereas others have evolved over time. Some wine labels can be considered quirky and a few are even considered quite outlandish. Whatever your thoughts on the labelling of wine, if it’s memorable the label has probably persuaded you to make a purchase.
INFLUENCING BUYING DECISIONS On the retail side of the wine industry, the wine label plays an important role in the buyer’s decision. A great label can definitely become one of the factors that will make the consumer decide which bottle to buy. Whilst labels definitely make quite a big difference for retail wine shops and stores sales, diners in restaurants choose their wines from a list, therefore the wine label has little or no impact on their purchase. GOOD WINE - BAD LABEL An extremely good wine presented with a poor label can be overlooked by the wine buyer who might be tempted to purchase a wine of inferior quality, even at a similar price, because the label is more attractive in his or her eyes. So even wines that are of equally good quality can be selected because one has a better label than the other. WINEMAKERS’ DECISIONS If winemakers decide to create a label that depicts something quite special or even personal to themselves, they also need to make sure that the message on the label is understood by the potential customer. There is a report regarding one winemaker questioning his retailer as to the reason why his wines were difficult to sell. Even though his wine labels were telling a great story, the consumers did not understand his message and left his bottles on the shelf. Once this information was relayed to the winemaker he somewhat reluctantly decided, for his next vintage, to change his labels with a simpler design and easier message to understand - his wine sales improved straight away. ECCENTRIC OR TRADITIONAL Minimal design using cursive text would appear to be the classic or traditional style for wine labels in many famous regions of Europe. Burgundy in France and Barolo in Italy have for many years stuck to these conventional and recognised presentations for their wine labels. However, one Barolo based producer, Giuseppe Vajra, now bottles his wines using, both classic and modern style labels. Inspired by the stained-glass windows in his cellar, his image driven labels are bright and colourful with bright orange and deep blue included in their somewhat eccentric design. These bright and colourful labels when first introduced saw an initial sense of resistance by the consumer but this has faded over time and his wine sales continue to flourish. IT’S WHAT’S IN THE BOTTLE THAT COUNTS An aesthetically pleasing label, whether quirky or traditional will definitely help to sell a bottle. If a label is hard to read or has a poor layout, the wine will be pushed aside; it does not matter how good it is. The biggest factor is what is inside the bottle and repeat sales will depend entirely on the quality of the wine. Humans are visual creatures and are drawn to things that please the eye, so naturally stimulating stylish labels will play an important role in the consumers decision to buy or not to buy the wine. But it will still always be the contents of the bottle that will attract them back to purchase more. Of course, we are all attracted by packaging and labelling in one way or another but the best way to ensure that what is behind the label of a bottle of wine is to get advice from your local wine merchant.

We all know the planet's in trouble. But solutions are worthless if people don't get on board with them - and let's be honest, to many people, the 'zero waste' concept sounds wildly difficult and unrealistic. This is exactly why Kathryn Kellogg's new book is so good. Not only is Kellogg a key spokesperson in the zero-waste movement, she's also in touch with what real, everyday life looks like for regular folk and families - and 101 Ways To Go Zero Waste invites them all to embrace a more waste-conscious lifestyle, in ways that won't leave them paralysed by overwhelm. There's no scaremongering or moral high ground-taking. This is an engaging, easy read brought to life with witty, relatable anecdotes, and just enough facts, stats and science to gently hammer home the point. Kellogg makes it clear from the start: Nobody is 100% zero waste - and that's OK. Here, though, are 101 big and small ways you can move towards a zero-waste goal, in chapters you can dip in and out of, or work through start-to-finish as suits. Kellogg explains how to make logical, lasting changes and navigate those in-between stages or moments when your zero waste sensibilities just won't win (What if your only option that day is bottled water? What if somebody's sick and needs that remedy that only comes in plastic packaging?). Ultimately, this isn't a book that's going to make you feel even more guilty and hopeless. But it will get you to slow down and think about your consumer choices a little more - hopefully with a sense of hope and even some enjoyment. 101 Ways To Go Zero Waste by Kathryn Kellogg is published in paperback by W. W. Norton, priced £9.99 (ebook £8.35). Review by Abi Jackson

UX model range in mpg (l/100km) official fuel consumption figures: combined 49.5 (5.7) – 53.3 (5.3). Figures are provided for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results. Fuel consumption and CO2 produced varies significantly depending on a number of factors, including the accessories fitted (post-registration), driving style, conditions, speed and vehicle load. All models and grades are certified according to the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), which replaces the New European Driving Cycle test procedure (NEDC). All CO2 figures quoted are NEDC equivalent. This means the CO2 figures are based on the new WLTP test procedure but calculated (using a standard European calculation method) to allow comparison with the NEDC test procedure and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. All mpg figures quoted are full WLTP figures. More information can be found by visiting: www.vehicle-certification-agency.gov.uk/fcb/wltp.asp
