Welcome to our Weddinglife March issue – we’ve had enormous amounts of fun putting it together (as always) and hope this shines through as you read and enjoy. Of course Weddinglife, dominating the centre pages, is bursting with all things Bride, Groom and Big Day orientated… there is something for everyone and lots of ideas of who to lean on at this momentous time in your life. We really are so blessed to have, not only the most glorious wedding destination on our doorstep, but a plethora of local businesses and artisans and others, who are truly invested in fulfilling your Wedding Day dreams. Weddinglife is just the lush filling – either side we have our usual indomitable writers and features showcasing the latest in travel, health, home, motoring and so much more. Mother’s day Recipe looks delightfully delicious and may inspire some Dads and children to spoil Mum on Sunday 22nd March…I look forward to it! Mark Shields has a lot to say about using NLP to build better client relationships; this of course spills over into home and everyday life and well worth a read on page 16. Fashion is full on and bright as it looks at London Fashion Week.

Art, Crafts & Culture Before The Screaming Starts In January, the suspiciously unsimilar sisters Flo and Joan – whose songs have racked up over 50 million views online – watched the Bros documentary. Through the tension and arguments of estranged siblings Matt and Luke Goss, Flo and Joan glimpsed a possible future waiting for them; a lot of dog portraits, male pattern baldness and the occasional argument over the use of pyrotechnics. Despite this ominous foreshadowing, they are doing their best to ignore the warning signs and focus on writing some more waggish songs to parade about the place. 13 & 14 March 2020 20:00 to 21:30 Jersey Arts Centre Phillips Street, JE2 4SW Contact: +44 (0) 1534 700400 enquiries@artscentre.je www.artscentre.je T.Rextasy 2020 Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. As the charity has grown and awareness of the work we do for those who are affected by brain injuries increases, we are contacted regularly for information, advice and our specialist services. From very small beginnings in 1997 the charity has grown dramatically. The Headway centre is now seeing an increase in the number of referrals and we currently have over 150 survivors of brain injury registered with us as members. Some require occasional support, however, up to 70 members access our services on a weekly basis. CAMBRETTE MARCH 2020:Layout 1 27/02/2020 12:25 Page 1

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Caring For Your Clients At Cambrette Care, we work alongside financial and legal service providers who have a wider duty of care to their clients. This can be a complicated situation, where a trustee/wealth manager may also become responsible for ensuring that their client has the appropriate day-to-day personal support in their home. Because of the challenges and risks of this sort of scenario, many local family offices choose to partner with Cambrette. Working with us provides institutions with much-needed reassurance because we meet the highest possible standards in terms of The Code of Practice for Healthcare Professionals and Carers in Jersey, as well as all of the Jersey Care Commission requirements with regards to insurance and training. We are also entirely independent of any GP or pharmacy affiliations, and therefore we only make recommendations purely in the best interests of your client. Additionally, our method of pricing means we provide certainty of costs, continuity of service and consistency of standards, which can be variable when using registered solo workers. While there are a lot of things to consider when finding the right support for your clients, the checklist below is a helpful reminder of the issues that need to be considered. DUTY OF CARE CHECKLIST 1. Does your client’s home care provider have access to 24/7 qualified support in an emergency? We always provide 24/7 support to give extra peace of mind.

we are always able to provide your clients with the care they need. 5. Does your client’s home care provider undergo regular, recognised training to stay up-to-date with best practice? We undertake the highest standards of training regularly with all our staff, and we make staying up-to-date compulsory. 6. Is your client’s home care provider DBS checked and fully insured at a suitable level? By using Cambrette, you know that an enhanced DBS check has been undertaken and that you are fully covered. 7. Does your client’s home care provider undertake regular home audits to assess changing needs? We visit our clients home’s frequently to ensure that everything is being done correctly and to the highest standards. 8. Does your client's home care provider ensure that you have regular reports to evidence your duty of care to your client? We provide monthly reports which can form part of your records to demonstrate you are acting in the best interests of your client. 9. Does your client's home care provider have robust safeguarding procedures in place? We provide details of our safeguarding procedures, which clearly show that we follow the maximum recommended requirements.

2. Does your client’s home care provider follow The Code of Practice for Healthcare Professionals and Carers in Jersey? This is something which we demonstrate and adhere to in every process in our business.

10. Has your home care provider entered into a strict and legally binding confidentiality agreement concerning your client, to protect their privacy and dignity? Adhering to privacy agreements is part of Cambrette’s normal procedures.

3. Is your client’s home care provider entirely independent of affiliations, and therefore always able to act in your client’s best interests? By choosing to work with Cambrette, you know that you have impartial support which is focused on providing the best care for your client, at the same time as removing your risk of liability.

These are just some of the considerations you must have when you have a duty of care, but working with a partner can reduce any risk to your clients, and to your own business.

4. If your client's home care provider is sick, or leaves, is there adequate cover in place to ensure continuity of care? Because we have a large team of trained staff,

MARCH RECIPE:Layout 1 27/02/2020 12:26 Page 2

RECIPE

ISLE OF WIGHT ROASTED TOMATO OVEN RISOTTO Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes You’ll need: 1.2 kilos Isle of Wight Tomatoes 4 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 large garlic clove, crushed 500g risotto rice 300ml vegetable stock 300g Isle of Wight cherry tomatoes 50g Parmesan, finely grated 150g mozzarella cherries 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley What to do: Preheat the oven to 200C mark 6.

FRENCH SHALLOT, TOULOUSE SAUSAGE AND BORLOTTI BEAN STEW This stew has all the flavour of a slow cooked casserole but takes under an hour to cook. The Toulouse sausages add great depth to the dish too. Serves: 4-6 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes You’ll need: 12 shallots, peeled and left whole 8 Toulouse sausages or spicy/Lincolnshire sausage 2 cloves of garlic, cut into slivers 2 tbsp olive oil 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced 400g borlotti beans, drained 400g can of tomatoes 150g shredded Savoy cabbage 1 tbsp chopped parsley 500 ml chicken stock 100ml red wine Black pepper and sea salt Bay leaf

Halve or quarter the tomatoes, depending on their size, drizzles with 2 tbsp olive oil and season well and roast for 30 minutes. Leave to cool for a few minutes and then blitz with a stick blender or crush with a fork. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large, ovenproof casserole dish (that has a lid). Add the onion and garlic and cook gently for five minutes. Add the rice, and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Pour in the tomato mixture and stock, season and bring to a simmer, stirring. Cover with a lid and cook in the oven for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the cherry tomatoes on a small baking tray, drizzle with remaining oil and season. Cook in the oven for 15 minutes until starting to split and soften. Remove risotto from oven, stir in most of the parmesan and all the mozzarella. Re-cover with the lid and return to oven for 10 minutes, until the rice is tender, and the liquid has been absorbed. Sprinkle over remaining Parmesan and top with the roasted cherry tomatoes to serve. Credit: the tomatostall.co.uk

What to do: Heat the olive oil in a heavy based sauté pan or saucepan and add the shallots and sausages and sauté for 4-5 minutes, browning them all over. Add the carrots and sauté for a further 3 minutes, not colouring them too much. Add the garlic and cook for a further 30 seconds, then add the tomatoes, beans, half the wine, stock, bay leaf, season well with sea salt and black pepper. Bring to the boil and simmer for a further 15 minutes on a low heat. If the soup becomes too thick, add a little more stock, then add the finely shredded cabbage, parsley and the rest of the red wine. Mix well and cook for a further 5 minutes, until the cabbage is just cooked. Slice the sausages into three, place in a bowl, and pour over all the bean soup. Season to taste. Serve with crusty bread and chopped parsley. Credit: ukshallot.com

Improving Your Client Relationships with NLP Competition for the Client is greater than ever before on the Channel Islands so Client Relationships are Key. With Jersey and Guernsey being a financial hub and host to many financial services trust companies and banks it is fair to assume the staff’s people’s skills need to be second to none. With so much restricted competition on the island client relationships to all businesses are of paramount importance. Mark Shields Explains... There are a number of interpersonal skills that will be fundamental to your success when dealing with clients at all levels and I begin today by introducing you to in my opinion the most important of all of these skills.

A new idea to be developed. It would have to start in my opinion with an unprecedented customer care policy never before seen on the Channel Islands. Just think how many new clients I would potentially attract. Scary isn’t it.

Just to remind you recent research suggests people continue to buy people and the basic dynamics of a normal business relationship hasn’t changed.

This in my opinion drives the need for real and meaningful training when it comes to interpersonal Skills if you want to get one step ahead of the competition.

What has changed and is constantly flagged is the lack of customer service we are getting at the moment, or should I say lack of it.

These skills have a proven track record in helping managers and staffs not only dramatically improve the performance of their business but also assist with their own levels of confidence and motivation as well.

What happened with that old saying the customer is always right? I think that disappeared ten years ago and sadly no one cares very much for the customer any more if at all. Having said that I am a huge believer when all is failing around you somehow somewhere there is an opportunity awaiting to be discovered.

THE ART OF BUILDING RAPPORT Rapport is the ability to join someone at their 'reality' or 'map of the world’ and to make them feel comfortable, that you have a strong common bond and that you understand them. These are the things that put people at ease, make them more responsive continues overleaf...

to you, let down their guard and trust, like and befriend you. Essentially rapport is the most important skill that you can develop as a client facing member of staff and for that matter in your everyday life. Rapport is the ability to communicate successfully. Rapport is the ability make someone understand that you can fulfill their needs as well as allowing you to get the insights that you need from them to fulfill your own.

patterns of behavior. Matching is almost identical as a concept but normally includes the person’s personal perception, language, beliefs etc as well as the physical mannerisms Matching enables a high degree of control and influence over the individual that you are matching, In that it can make them feel totally at ease and fully responsive to what you have to say. This happens every day in our lives anyway.

The saying goes 'people like people who are like themselves'. The old cliché' of 'opposites attract' is actually just a misunderstanding of the depth and subtlety that rapport goes to. When 'opposites attract' it must be that the so called opposites both have the commonality of being excited by the new and different, the sense of specialness and uniqueness of being 'opposites', in fact you will inevitably see in so called 'opposites' that the underlying similarities, value systems etc will be very alike. How is rapport created? First and foremost by finding things in common. The most effective ways of doing this are by mirroring and matching - two concepts that originated in NLP. Mirroring and matching are essentially the ability to pay close attention to someone's language, beliefs, values and physiology and copy them either overtly or covertly, consciously or unconsciously.

PACING AND LEADING

7% of communication is transmitted through the words themselves 38% via how the words are said (tone of voice) 55% through non verbal communication (body physiology) WHAT IS MIRRORING & MATCHING Mirroring is essentially copying without causing offense and without being obvious, essentially reflecting back the physical

18 | www.life-mags.com

Once rapport is created we then use it to ‘pace and lead' the client in the direction that we want (what is most beneficial to them). It is also a barometer to let us know when rapport has been broken. Pacing and leading is the process in which we pace (continually match) the client and lead them to more resourceful, constructive and beneficial states, behaviors and beliefs etc. SUMMARY In my opinion building effective and meaningful rapport is the most important skill you can master. It will help you in all areas of your business. NLP skills are excellent for learning how to improve client relationships through building better rapport and developing stronger and more meaningful client relationships.

Your Dreams Walk down the aisle in your dream dress with Lisa Haynes’ big day style guide. Just like meeting the man you’re exchanging your vows with, they say when you’ve found The dress, you ‘just know’. But you still might have to kiss a whole bunch of frogs first and wriggle your way into gown after gown until you find your perfect match. Sometimes even hardened anti-meringue brides may be swayed once they first step into a flowing voluminous dress, and similarly those seeking gigantic trains can fall head-over-heels with a sleek fishtail frock. The big day might be all about you and your husband-to-be but the stylish search for your dress is a love affair you’ll never forget. Traditionalist, modernist or bling-fiend bride, your gorgeous gown awaits...

MRS TRADITIONALIST If you’ve always dreamed of the big white princess wedding, now is your chance to wow your very own Prince Charming with a modern-day fairytale gown. Think tumbling cascades of tulle, beaded bodice and never-ending train. Styling tip: Floral corsages, oversized bows or crystal sparkle, make sure any extravagant detailing is focused on your best feature.

MRS MODERN Those seeking something different to avoid being a cookie-cutter bride don’t have to opt for a daring black gown a la Sarah Jessica Parker to stand out. Opt for clean lines, simple shapes, and futuristic detailing for a cutting-edge look to echo the catwalks. Quirky detailing and embroidery can also make you stand out from the traditional bridal brigade. continues overleaf...

In the sea of white dresses there is definitely a yearning for individuality. Embroidery lends itself to this perfectly, from personal embellishments, the name of your betrothed embroidered on the dress, through to an alternative to a veil, it’s all about the detail. Styling tip: Body-hugging sleek dress? Invest in comfortable but silhouette-enhancing underwear to flaunt your figure to the max.

MRS MAGPIE Your big day focus doesn’t have to be all about the dress. If you’re a self-confessed accessories addict, keep your gown pared-down and sparkle with jewels, pearls and diamonds. Splash out on statement shoes, jewellery or a head piece to make a decadent impact. If the dress is very ornate, you need a simple style of accessory, but if you’re wearing a sleeker style, go to town with more elaborate jewellery. It’s important not to over-complicate the look. Either wear earrings and a bracelet, or a necklace - if you have too much going on you lose the effect. Styling tip: Long chandelier earrings will really set off an asymmetric neckline. 22 | www.life-mags.com

Peace of Mind: pre-marital agreements By Nicholas Le Quesne, Corbett Le Quesne So, you’ve arranged the date, the venue, flowers, cake, bridesmaids, best man, clothes and the honeymoon………what else do you need to do?

Your wedding is planned, the rest of your lives together mapped out. Many weddings are months if not years in the planning but, as with most things, the boring bits are left until last. Who wants to be bothered with legal agreements? Pre-marital agreements are unromantic and just for millionaires, right? Wrong! Today many more people are entering into pre-marital agreements (or “pre-nups”) as part of the preparation for their wedding, not just the rich and famous. And there is absolutely no need for the agreement to be unromantic. Okay, so perhaps a pre-marital agreement is not quite as romantic as the proposal in St Ouen’s Bay at sunset, or the engagement ring delivered by turtle doves. But what a pre-marital agreement gives a couple can still be part of the romance. A pre-marital agreement gives you and your future spouse, reassurance and peace of mind. One of the really lovely parts of my job as a family lawyer is advising people before they marry. There are many different specific reasons why couples enter into pre-marital agreements but all the reasons come down, in one way or another, to reassurance. It may be that one or both parties have been in previous relationships and want to ensure that children are protected. It could be that a young couple want to reassure their respective parents that inherited land or family wealth will not leave the family after a marriage breakdown. Perhaps a future spouse has spent a lifetime working hard to create a successful business and needs reassurance that they will not lose what they have achieved. As people marry later, with many having built up careers and wealth independently, pre-marital agreements are increasingly being considered. Couples can show how much they care for each other by providing reassurance about the future, by reaching an agreement when they are happy and in love.

24 | www.life-mags.com

A pre-marital agreement is drafted with your own special circumstances in mind. It may provide for all pre-owned assets to stay in separate ownership but for everything acquired during the marriage to be shared. It might specify that all assets remain separate throughout the marriage but then make specific arrangements for the less financially advantaged spouse if the marriage ends. The agreement may determine what happens to business or trust assets, it may make different arrangements for different circumstances. It is your agreement, tailored to meet your specific needs.

“A pre-marital agreement gives you and your future spouse, reassurance and peace of mind” The law about pre-marital agreements has changed considerably over the last 10 years. There was a time when a lawyer could confidently say that a pre-marital agreement was not worth the paper it was written on. In the past the public policy was that it would undermine marriage to plan for what may happen if the marriage came to an end. In fact, the thinking now in legal circles is quite the opposite. Since the English case of Radmacher v Granatino in 2010 and more recent cases in Jersey, the courts recognise that far from undermining marriage, a properly formulated pre-marital agreement which has been prepared with the best of motives, can in fact strengthen a marriage.

CORBETT LE QUESNE MARCH 2020:Layout 1 27/02/2020 13:09 Page 2

WEDDING LIFE

By the couple knowing in advance what will happen if their marriage ends, they can be more relaxed in their relationship, secure in the knowledge of what the arrangements would be, they can have peace of mind. And that may well mean that it is less likely that the marriage will break down at all.

“A pre-marital agreement is drafted with your own special circumstances in mind” For a pre-marital agreement to be upheld by the Family Court in Jersey, it will need to be: Freely entered into. There must be no mistake, misunderstanding, pressure or undue influence which might affect the free will of either of you making the agreement. You must both understand what the agreement means and agree to be bound by it. Usually when a marriage ends the court has discretion to make financial orders. A pre-marital agreement aims to restrict that discretion and you need to know what that will mean. You must each have told the other what your assets are (disclosure). You will each need to set out a list of all your assets and the value of them. If not all the assets are disclosed that may invalidate the agreement.

You must both have received independent legal advice. This is essential for the agreement to be upheld. The best way of preparing pre-marital agreements is by collaborative law, when both parties and their lawyers (you need one each) sit around a table to reach agreement then all sign the final document together. That way everyone can be sure that their queries have been dealt with, they understand what is involved and have signed freely. The agreement must be made well before the wedding. Ideally the agreement should have been discussed and finally signed at least 2 months before the wedding. If the time is shorter than that you will need to confirm that you had enough time to properly consider the agreement. So, we are back to those arrangements…….a pre-marital agreement is something that all couples should consider, although it won’t be necessary for everyone. A pre-marital agreement is made to provide reassurance. And don’t leave it too late!

WEDDING LIFE

Millinery STYLE The year 2020 is set to be a special one for weddings with more taking place earlier this year in March and April. Vivien from Up and Above in Don Street said that many brides were asking guests to consider wearing some form of millinery. Brides do seem to want their guests to really dress up and you can understand why; so much thought, planning, time and expense goes into a wedding that it is a great compliment to the Bride and Groom if guests look special too and nothing says “dressed up” more than a hat. Mothers of the Bride and Groom should always have something on their head unless it is a very informal wedding. However, after this the choice as to what and how big is up to the individual. Some revel in the opportunity to dress up and others cringe at the thought of wearing something on their head. “This is often because we don’t have many occasions to wear a hat and we are so unsure as to what would suit us” Vivien said. “However, we sell hundreds of millinery items every year for weddings, the races and Buckingham Palace so we know what suits and encourage ladies to try on different styles until they feel really comfortable in their choice.” It is essential that you take your outfit with you when shopping for millinery and Vivien explained why, “So often someone will 28 | www.life-mags.com

be convinced they know the colour or shade they need however as exchanges are not possible we always insist they bring in their outfit to be sure, and yes, nine times out of ten it’s wrong and we have to find something else. This can be great fun though as often it is something totally different that looks fabulous, sometimes a colour just pops out of a dress and by highlighting it you create a stunning look. We definitely give brownie points to the ladies who come in clutching their dress and accessories if they have them, it makes everything so much easier” Even if a wedding is relaxed or informal this is not an excuse to be lazy or simply not care what you are wearing. Maybe a headpiece would not be essential in these circumstances but even a simple outfit can be chosen with care and put together thoughtfully. You don’t have to have something new but it must look as if you have made a real effort and that goes for the men too. A wedding day is the most important day not just for the Bride and Groom but also for their close family who have also probably helped to make it very special, so to go along not looking your very best is almost an insult. “We absolutely love putting the finishing touches to an outfit and to see everything come together and someone look amazing is a great reward” Vivien said.

Dream Wedding In our day-dreams, the romantic proposal of marriage is effortlessly followed by a Cinderella-style wedding day, and the planning process is carefully edited out as Sarah O’Meara discovers

As lovely as these fantasies are, they’re hardly a blueprint for organising the big day. Whether you’re planning a modest yet elegant affair or a week’s worth of wild hedonism, every dream wedding needs a strong plan to transform it from an idea into reality. Don’t panic, just make sure you’re asking the right questions at the right time. There’s no point in worrying about the details of the day until you’ve made five key decisions. Your big five are... how, where, when, who and budget. Do you want a religious or civil ceremony, in which geographic location, at what time of year, who will you invite and how much can you spend?

a reality

The Big Five are your road map and until they’ve been agreed upon you can’t get down to the details. Follow these tips to make sure your wedding day is a success... JUST GOT ENGAGED At this stage you could be three years or three months away and should be fizzing with excitement about the big day. Announcing your engagement is an incredibly special moment for a newly-engaged couple, so it’s important to enjoy the moment, while treating the occasion with care. Think carefully about who needs to know. If you’ve got children from a past relationship, or relatives you rarely see, you don’t want them to find out in the wrong way.

DREAM WEDDING:Layout 1 27/02/2020 13:39 Page 2

WEDDING LIFE

The etiquette is, ‘They should hear it from you’. Then work on your Big Five. When do you want your ideal wedding to be? Bear in mind that off-season weddings in January and February can be more affordable. The ‘Just Got Engaged’ period is also for thinking about the tone and style of your wedding and you may want to start a mood board. This will get you on the right road and mean everything starts to fall into place. Cut out pictures from magazines, from the internet and stick them on a piece of card. As you stick pictures in, you’ll see themes appear. It’s very helpful for key suppliers. Take it with you, and that’ll inspire the people you’re hiring. It’s like furniture shopping. This is definitely the time to go and look at a variety of wedding venues for inspiration, to try on dresses on a whim and have fun looking at different ideas. But also remember that if you’ve decided to have a religious ceremony, your church ideally shouldn’t be more than 30 minutes from the venue. TWELVE TO NINE MONTHS TO GO Having enjoyed the luxury of travelling to venues, perhaps trying on a few gowns and looking at pretty pictures in magazines, now’s the time to firm up those plans. Imagine that this phase is called ‘Ideas and Decisions’ and that now you’ve got a sense of the key elements which will define the look and style of day, it’s important to hire suppliers who can make sure those are all in place. You don’t yet know exactly what they have to do but decide what florist you want to use. DON’T FORGET: • Set the date, book the ceremony and venue(s) • Book key suppliers (catering, florist, photography, transport, stationer) • Compile guest list • Book entertainment (band, DJ etc.) • Reserve suits, purchase bridesmaids’ outfits and select wedding gown • Send out ‘Save the Date’ cards/email NINE TO THREE MONTHS Having sketched the outline of your wedding and hired the key players, it’s now the fun part - filling in the details of the day and designing your perfect wedding! Think about what it’s going to look like -and if you’re not sure, get help. It’s important for all the elements to be co-ordinated, otherwise you’ll end up with something random, like a cake that doesn’t work with the venue. You need a design overview. Imagine that you’ve renovated your house and now you’re dressing it with delightful ornaments, curtains and pictures which reflect your own fabulous taste.

34 | www.life-mags.com

DON’T FORGET: • Menu tasting • Choose cake, flowers, readings and music • Purchase wedding ring(s) • Register for gift list • Choose stationer and agree invitations • Book honeymoon THREE TO ONE MONTHS TO GO At this point, you’ll hopefully be tying everything together, confirming all your plans and adding those final details. For those who feel that there’s simply too much left to do, or are worried about being stressed on the day, you might consider bringing someone in to bring it all together. Planning a wedding isn’t hard - but there is a lot to do. Our wedding day schedules are 30 pages long and every 15 minutes is accounted for. DON’T FORGET: • Confirm menu • Mail invitations 12 to 8 weeks before wedding • Confirm order of service with officiant • One month to go, chase outstanding RSVPs TEN DAYS BEFORE THE WEDDING If you’ve done it right, there shouldn’t be much left to do - apart from keep staying rested, and going on that last minute diet. A key point to remember is that if everyone involved has the same expectations of the day, then the day should run smoothly. If you’ve talked through the Big Five at the beginning, then any last minute controversies should be avoided. Listen to suggestions from friends and family throughout the process. Some people just want to be heard and by hearing them out, you know they’ll be supportive on the day - even if you’ve ignored what they said!. DON’T FORGET: • Confirm final guest numbers with venue and caterer • Collect Orders of Service, menu and place cards if necessary • Prepare ‘Wedding Day Schedule’ and distribute as required • Confirm shot list with photographer

WEDDING LIFE

The Best Man Well, it’s finally happened - you’ve been asked to be a best man! So, what does being a best man involve? What are your responsibilities and what about the speech? This article will answer these and other questions about being a best man. Historically, a bridegroom’s best man was chosen for being strong and a good fighter who assisted his friend when he captured his bride. A best man’s support was also needed on the wedding day to protect the bride from any rival who might try to carry her away for his own. When the practice of capturing brides ceased, the best man’s role of supporting the groom and protecting the bride altered to the best man becoming exclusively the groom’s escort while the bride was supported by her bridesmaids. Today, the role of best man (or best woman) is offered to the groom’s closest adult relative or friend but is not one that should be accepted lightly. You will be a main player not only on the day itself, but your advice and practical help will be sought in the preparations beforehand. Your tasks are many and varied but essentially during the run up to the wedding you will be relied upon as a supporter and organiser.

THE BEST MAN’S DUTIES Before The Wedding It is important at the outset of being asked to be a best man to establish from the groom the level of input he would like you to have. Some grooms require as much help as you are able to offer, while others are happy for you to have a minimum amount of input during the pre wedding period but require your help and support on the wedding day alone. Listed below are the traditional responsibilities of a best man: Become involved in discussions and decisions in the planning stage with the groom, acting as a sounding board for his ideas. Help the groom choose the ushers, who are usually picked from both the bride and groom’s families and friends. You need to make sure the ushers are aware of their responsibilities (see over), attend fittings of outfits and ensure they are available to attend the rehearsal (if required).

WEDDING LIFE

Together with the groom, decide on the outfits for both yourselves, and the ushers (if the outfits are hired the cost is usually the responsibility of the groom - if his finances permit).

Collect any greetings messages from the bride’s father and check to see if any messages have been delivered direct to the reception venue.

Arrange the stag night - at least a few days before the wedding to give everyone a chance to recover. Attend the wedding rehearsal and check car-parking facilities and access, particularly if there will be disabled guests.

When everyone is seated and before the meal/buffet is served, call for silence and either invite the minister to say grace or, if one is not present, say it yourself.

On the day

When the meal is finished, introduce the speeches inviting the bride’s father to speak first.

A best man’s role on the wedding day is of the utmost importance. The groom will no doubt be very nervous and the calming support of his escort is vital.

After the bride’s father has delivered his speech and toasted the bride and groom, introduce the groom for his much awaited words!

Here are your other duties: Meet the groom at least a couple of hours before you need to leave for the ceremony venue. Help the groom dress and ensure he looks his best. Make sure you have the ring(s) and take possession of the money for the church fees. Transport the groom to the ceremony venue making sure you arrive at least 30 minutes before the ceremony is due to begin. A telephone call to the bride’s father telling him that you are leaving will provide welcomed comfort! Pay the church fees, on behalf of the groom. Take your seat with the groom on the front right-hand pew while waiting for the bride. Shortly before the bride arrives, you will be prompted to stand in position at the head of the aisle (standing to the groom’s right). Hand over the ring(s) at the required moment. Accompany the chief bridesmaid (or matron of honour) to the vestry for the signing of the register. You may also be asked by the groom to sign the register as a witness. Join the recessional down the aisle following in line after the bride and groom, the bride’s father and groom’s mother and the groom’s father and the bride’s mother. You will escort the chief bridesmaid on your left arm. Upon arrival at the reception venue, your duties are as follows but some will depend upon whether you have agreed to take on the role of toastmaster. 38 | www.life-mags.com

The groom’s speech ends with a toast to the bridesmaids. You will reply to this toast on behalf of the bridesmaids and deliver your speech, read the congratulatory messages from absent family and friends, and close by toasting the bride and groom. Once the speeches have concluded, you will announce the traditional cutting of the cake ceremony.

Managing Expectations around

Your Wedding

Credit: Dasa Wharton Photography

Assume they’re questioning you because they care and very likely also because to some degree they’re afraid, of: • • • • •

not being heard; not being important any more; not being in charge; losing you, or some part of you; being embarrassed.

STRATEGIES FOR HANDLING OBJECTIONS

Planning your wedding ought to be fun. However, for some it can become worrisome, especially if people you love have expectations you cannot, or don’t wish to, fulfill. In my experience others’ objections stem from fear and can best be addressed with clear communication. Since 2002 I’ve worked with countless couples dealing with issues raised by family and friends, many of which they never saw coming, because these are the people they hold most dear and who they least expected to question their plans. It’s really important that we remember one of the main reasons we’re upset by a person’s objections is precisely because we care about them. Subjects which often become a source of loved ones’ concern, which in turn can become expectations which need managing or objections which require addressing, include: • • • •

Who’s involved in your wedding planning The type of ceremony you’re planning Your Guest List Involvement on the wedding day

KEEP YOUR BIG VISION IN MIND Remember what your overall vision is – perhaps intimate family affair or laid back festival style fun – and importantly why the two of you want this. This makes it easier to explain both what you want and why to others. BE THE COOL, CALM AND COLLECTED ADULT YOU ARE Does this ring true or do you still feel like a child wanting to have a tantrum when someone objects to your ideas? We all do sometimes!

“Everything comes down to good communication” • Stop talking about it Whether you’re sharing via social media or in the pub with friends, if people oppose your plans, don’t share. • Set boundaries If you’ve decided you’ll not invite children and a friend objects, hear her out, then kindly reassert that the decision is made and you’d rather not discuss it further. • Rather than argue about someone’s expectations, face them Ask why they have this expectation when you’ve always explained that such and such is your plan. Their expectation may stem from something more deeply rooted than your wedding. You can sympathise but then both recognise the root cause and move forward. • Think logically and take time Sometimes people say, or do, something which seems so wrong you’re totally floored. Consciously walk away, politely finish the call or absolutely stop yourself from pressing ‘Send’. The person may be being utterly stubborn and you’ll need to reverse what they have done or set a boundary, however it’s worth trying to get to the bottom of why first. • Turn the Tables If you’ve an impossible task trying to please a family member or friend, turn it around. If you have two sisters and one refuses to be in a photo with the other, explain that they’re of equal importance to you and ask for her solution. She might actually have one. Worst case tell her you love her but that if she cannot find a solution then you’re sorry she won’t be in the family photo. continues overleaf...

WEDDING LIFE

Generally the person will compromise, but be prepared for them not to. It will have been their decision. • Write it down Whatever the issue on the part of another is, especially if you attach a lot of emotion to it, think about writing to them. Writing our thoughts, worries and feelings allows us to do it: • slowly, returning to it, or sleeping on it; • fully, ensuring we make all the points we want, in the order we choose; • without shouting or bursting into tears. This is often effective if the person is unused to us being so contained and thoughtful. • Use Visualisation Take time to think about the upcoming conversation. Visualise the entire meeting, always focusing on what you want to happen, not what you don’t want. Does this method mean you will always get exactly what you want? No. However in my experience you’re much more likely to get as close as possible as your brain has already experienced it therefore the words you use during your session will be anticipating your ideal outcome. • Work at being on the same page Yes, you and your other half. That’s not to say we don’t have issues with our other halves – of course we do sometimes. Your wedding planning is a great place to make sure you have each others’ backs. Once you’ve agreed your overall vision, this helps you sup port one another in overcoming others’ objections.

Those nearest to us can find the, often imagined, shift in their importance to us hard to accept. Working together kindly and objectively to overcome the disagreement of those who, up to now, have been our go to people is a great way to start a marriage. Showing them that you’re a couple and that henceforth you are each other’s first port of call for advice and support may not go down brilliantly initially, but in the long term it will set the right precedent and earn you respect as a couple. LASER CENTRE MARCH 2020:Layout 1 27/02/2020 15:14 Page 1

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Brighten and Tighten your skin for the Big Day with a Hydrafacial at The Laser Centre a review by Juanita Shield-Laignel... Conveniently situated within The Island Medical Centre, Gloucester Street, The Laser Centre has been established since 1997 and flourishing under the Directorship of Julie Naidu, offers many of the island’s cosmetic needs. Loved by the Stars and sporting lots of natural products, I was keen to find out more so Julie invited me to experience a HydraFacial for myself. Julie says “The Laser Centre has been established for over 20 years and with my background in Nursing, I know we offer the best possible service; cutting edge, innovative, non-surgical treatments, including injectables such as wrinkle relaxing injections and fillers. Very experienced, my staff and I are constantly updating, remaining current and moving with the times.” My therapist on this occasion was Julie herself, who lost no time in conducting a questionnaire to ensure I received the best treatment possible. My skin requirements logged and any possible contra-indications discussed, Julie explained the procedure and its benefits – HydraFacial is designed to reverse damage from environmental aging, protects and improves overall skin health and boosts natural collagen production and hydration. I was keen to get started. Julie invited me to lie on a treatment couch covering me with a blanket for comfort. I had already been informed that the HydraFacial equipment uses a sucking motion, almost like a mini vacuum, but simultaneously, water plus the ingredients chosen especially for my skin’s needs, including essential oils and honey, would be fed into my dermis.

Julie began by manually cleansing my face, removing any makeup and then started the ‘5 Step’ procedure. Step 1. Deep cleansing and exfoliating, using the HydraFacial nozzle passed over the entire face to remove debris at a deeper level than ordinary cleansing. Julie’s description of how the sucking would feel was very accurate and felt interesting but not unpleasant.

designed to reduce redness and further stimulate collagen production.

Step 2. Was the application of a peel containing fruit acids and left only for just over a minute for my skin type - Julie had prepared me to expect a tingling sensation but again, this was not unpleasant.

The 45 minute procedure over, I was invited to sit up slowly and offered a glass of water. Julie held a mirror up for me to see the results of her work. I was certainly glowing…my skin looked amazing.

Step 3. This is called the ‘Extract’ part of the procedure and again the HydraFacial wand was used to remove any debris left in the pores and then nourish with intense moisturisers…by now I was used to the sucking sensation and finding it relaxing.

Julie gave me lots of aftercare advice to ensure the best possible and longest lasting results and sent me on my way. On returning to the office my colleagues commented that my skin looked great and the next day my face felt super hydrated and soft. I was even amazed to see that a small patch of actinic keratosis on my forehead had reduced greatly in size and softened in texture.

Step 4. ‘Hydrate’ to saturate the skin with anti-oxidants to maximise glow; we all need a bit of maximised glow! Julie checked in with me again to ensure I was ok. I mumbled that yes everything was fine but I confess, endorphins had kicked in and I was on another planet somewhere…completely relaxed. Step 5. ‘Rejuvenation’ where a red and infrared LED was passed over my skin,

I would definitely revisit The Laser Centre for another HydraFacial. Thank you The Laser Centre and the expert professional care of Julie…. what a wonderful experience…and one to be repeated.

HOME LIVING

A Home with Love and Harmony WORDS AND IMAGES SUPPLIED BY KATYA PASTORINI, PAINTED BEAUTIFUL

Who does not like the tangibility or structure of an art as guidance? When we began to consider the concept of bringing romance into the home, we came across some ‘interesting’ interior decorating images that were reminiscent of a Barbara Cartland novel, however after filtering out the pink frills and chintz (there is nothing wrong with a little bit of chintz!) we found that we were drawn in by the art of Feng Shui to provide depth to the concept. Feng Shui can guide us on where to place household items to get the best energetic result. Good Feng Shui creates harmony, happiness, good health and wealth. Chinese beliefs are; if you ignore Feng Shui, you may be inviting the opposite of harmony – disharmony! According to the principles of Feng Shui, all things have energy, even furniture and walls. We do not want disharmony and conflict, do we? Feng Shui shows us how, and it is not at all complicated. Whether you believe or not, why not give it a try? What have you got to lose, suspend your skepticism and get out your compass. 44 | www.life-mags.com

FENG SHUI REMEDIES: MORE LOVE AND HARMONY THE BEDROOM A bed with a solid headboard against a wall (not a window) will support those sleeping in it. If you do not currently have a headboard, why not think about adding one? Make it soft and

upholstered or solid wood, but make sure it supports you while you are sleeping or getting served breakfast in bed! The ideal is facing any door or entrance, as this also promotes security. You always want to be able to see who is coming through the door. The balance of a pair of bedsides with lamps on either side of the bed is important, even if you are currently sleeping in it alone. This sends out the energetic message that there’s room for a potential partner. Pairs of anything signal couples are welcome here! For the same reason, keep personal items such as stuffed animals or excess pillows off your bed. Your bed needs to have room. Any artwork in your bedroom should also reflect love. So, take those pictures of you by yourself (or you with a child or friend) and move them out of your bedroom to another room. Put up art or photos of twosomes or lovers as a way to attract that same energy. If you have a mirror in the bedroom make sure it is not facing the bed. Mirrors bounce energy around and create a feeling of restlessness. The only use for a mirror in the bedroom would be to “see” your doorway if you are not able to have your bed facing the door. Consider adding touches of soft colors to the bedroom or bathroom walls. Colour dictates a room’s vibe, more than any other element. Avoid strong energetic colors. Take out any elements that bring the outside world into your sanctuary. Your bedroom should be a place for relaxation. Anything else brings disharmony and distraction. Unplug your phone and iPad; banish the TV and any desktop computer. In fact, don’t even consider having a work desk in your bedroom; a work vibe will interfere with romance and sleep. Declutter your bedroom. You do not want any laundry, past mementos or items that do not support a love vibe, even if something is hidden it still represents energy. Clear clutter from under the bed and cupboards too. If you have to store bedding under the bed, use soft bags to store it in. Definitely do not store anything that will create sharp, hard energy. Sports equipment, weapons and files under the bed will not only disrupt your love life but your sleep too. If you’re in a relationship, place photos of the two of you where you can see them, to boost your sense of being in love. This is especially true if you may not feel in the mood right now! Keep lighting soft and dimmable. RELATIONSHIP AREAS IN YOUR HOME NEED LOVE TOO Make sure you pay attention to the other relationship areas in your home. According to Feng Shui, the southwest corner is energetically the relationship area. This applies to each example if you walk in your front door and your living room is in southwest corner, that is your homes’ relationship area. Any cures or tips for adding love to the bedroom are good to use here too. Obviously, you do not have a bed in the living room, but you can still use pairs of things to decorate that corner of the house with. What if the kitchen is in the southwest corner of your home? It is the same principle, place the pictures of you and the children in

another room and keep the kitchen just for pairs or two of anything. As the southwest corner of your home is also the relationship zone, the same applies to the southwest corner of each room. If your kitchen is in the northwest corner of your home, work out where the southwest corner of the kitchen is and decorate it to support love and harmony. All it takes is a compass and a bit of imagination! Think of increasing your love energy throughout the house with Feng Shui. Your home’s relationship areas aka love zones are just waiting for your energetic touches to attract romantic happy times! 5 TIPS TO GAIN SPACE:Layout 1 02/03/2020 16:49 Page 1

HOME LIVING

Don't Move; Improve... By Julia Gray

Adding space is one of the best ways to improve your home and increase its value. If you've outgrown your home, but can make it bigger by building an extension or converting the loft, cellar or garage, doing the work is often more economical than moving to a larger property, and gives you a chance to create living space tailored to your needs. However, be careful not to extend your home in the wrong way. For example, if you're converting the loft to create an extra bedroom and there isn't enough living space downstairs for the total number of bedrooms, you'll be making the house too top heavy. If you're concerned about resale, ask a local estate agent whether the work you're considering is advisable. Modernising a home stuck in a different decade is always going to add value, and make it more sellable and nicer to live in. Central heating is vital because most of us want it, but installing it is expensive and disruptive - it's something to do at an early

not easy being without either while the work's being done. Day to day, replacing a dated kitchen or bathroom with a modern one will make a big difference to your life, and you can fit a new one inexpensively, although it's not hard to spend a lot. If you can create one, an open-plan kitchen-diner/family room is the most popular type of kitchen these days, as it's ideal for family life and entertaining. En-suite bathrooms are another good way to add value and make your home life easier, especially if you have kids. You should have at least one bathroom for every three bedrooms, but when everyone's getting ready in the morning, there can be a lot of pressure on that one bathroom.

stage of renovating. The same applies to rewiring - old wiring isn't always obvious, but can be dangerous. Having a property rewired is also expensive and disruptive and can create more work and expense because you often have to replaster afterwards. It's said the rooms that sell homes most are the kitchen and bathroom. Again, this is because updating them is costly and it's

48 | www.life-mags.com

This is when another bathroom comes in very handy. It's also useful to have a bathroom on every floor where there are bedrooms, so, for example, loft-conversion bedrooms with a bathroom are usually more valuable and useful than those without. In areas where parking space is limited, off-street parking is a big plus, although it's most likely to add value in expensive urban areas. You may need planning permission from your local council for both the off-street parking and a dropped kerb.

ROMANTIC MEETS ROCK 'N ROLL: STEAL PEARL LOWE'S

Eclectic Bohemian Style It's all about 'faded glamour' for Pearl Lowe and her designer friends. Gabrielle Fagan finds out how to get the look...

There are colourful living rooms, intimate bedrooms, and plush bathrooms which showcase the many different ways 'faded glamour' can be interpreted - from urban to rustic, and bohemian to vintage.

Singer-turned-fashion designer Pearl Lowe is renowned for her quirky, individual style - so it's probably no surprise that she defiantly dances to her own tune when it comes to her decor choices too.

"I'd say it's a gloriously decadent yet well-lived-in decorating style. I think of rooms that are elegant yet whimsical at the same time," muses Lowe.

Her home - a rambling 11-bedroom Georgian mansion in Somerset showcases her trademark blend of grand, romantic chic and cool rock 'n roll.

She shares her own home with her musician husband, Danny Goffey (of the Nineties band Supergrass), and their children Alfie, 23, Frankie 20, and Betty, 15. Her daughter, model Daisy, 31, is a regular visitor too.

"Many people might regard my style as quite 'eclectic'," observes London-born Lowe. "That's fine by me, because I don't believe there should be any rules - unless you want your house to be a hotel," the 49-year-old declares with a smile. She sums up her interior style as "faded glamour" - and this is also the title of her new book, which celebrates her approach to decor and creating spaces she loves. Faded Glamour gives us a glimpse into not only Lowe's own home, but also the private spaces of her super-creative designer friends, including Solange Azagury-Partridge, Alice Temperley and Sera Hersham Loftus.

Throughout the property, Lowe has managed to deftly mix precious pieces of antique furniture with contemporary colourful pieces from flea markets, which happily sit alongside 18th century mahogany wood and 1950s plastic retro. Wear-and-tear and the patina of age aren't hidden. Instead, they're revered and deliberately embraced. "To me, an object that was once the height of elegance but is now a bit battered has far more allure than something brand new," says Lowe. "What I enjoy is the mix, the alchemy you create when you play around with styles... where chintz sits alongside animal print and sultry velvets; rococo suddenly goes a little rock 'n roll, and a freestanding 1970s Anglepoise lamp sets it all alight." As a designer, she draws inspiration from many quarters: art, film, photography, music, travel and - above all - her friends, especially Rachel Ashwell, the designer and writer who introduced us all to 'shabby chic' back in the Nineties. Ashwell, says Lowe, "taught me how to create spaces that are not just decadent and stylish, but deliciously inviting and alluringly comfortable".

COLOURFUL FADED GLAMOUR: SOLANGE AZAGURY-PARTRIDGE This interior literally "sets your spirit soaring", enthuses Lowe. This is a home where sofas and chairs are covered in a giddy array of colourful fabrics and throws, and who's style takes influences from the East. It's a harmony of surprising contrasts - a sofa in a Sanderson flowery chintz sits alongside one dressed in an Ikat print, while yellow velvet clashes with shocking pink toile de Jouy wallpaper, and mismatched Moroccan rugs form a rainbow patchwork across the floors. Fabric used for walls adds to a sense of warmth as well as enriching the palette of shades, while the woodwork is painted baby pink. "Solange's bold use of colour is full of wit and wonder and brings a smile to your face," says Lowe. JEWELS FOR THE HOME CHIC FADED GLAMOUR: ALICE TEMPERLEY Award-winning fashion designer Temperley, who dresses some of the most stylish women in the world - from the Duchess of Cambridge to Beyonce - playfully mixes old with new in her home, a Regency mansion.

Here, we take a sneak peek at some of the homes bringing 'faded glamour' to life...

Giant disco balls hang from original plaster roses on the ceiling, and black-and-white photographs and contemporary art line the walls of wood-panelled reception rooms. A mix of intriguing finds from local flea markets - twinkling candelabras, vintage glassware, bespoke china and stacks of rare books are just some of the treasures that embellish the space and enhance character and interest. "What I love about this house is that despite the grandeur of the building itself - which in other hands could look austere and formal - Alice has, with her inherent romantic aesthetic, created a whimsical, enchanted world here," Lower says admiringly.

FASHION A GLAMOROUS HOME BOHEMIAN FADED GLAMOUR: SERA HERSHAM-LOFTUS Fashion and interior designer Hersham-Loftus has banished walls from her London apartment, and transformed it into a giant living space simply divided into areas by beautiful panels of fabric. Hand-made muslin curtains appliqued with vintage lace and hand-dyed - hang over windows, and ceilings are painted black. She's furnished with day-beds, antique furniture and a jungle of vast potted plants throughout, which conceal subtle lighting effects. The designer's style, says Lowe, is ever evolving, and "sumptuous, seductive, exotic, and highly unique".

STUDY THE SPACE As a beginner, it's easiest to kick off your Feng shui mission in either your home office/desk area or your hall, say the two designers. "Placing your desk in the centre of a room or opposite/adjacent to a window, according to the laws of Feng shui, enhances creativity, energy and productivity," they explain. Apparently, it pays dividends if you blitz that hall as well. After all, if your first sight of home when you get in after a day at the office is a dumping ground for coats, shoes and sports kit, it won't exactly lift your spirits! "Keeping it tidy, spacious and inviting is a great start for good Feng shui and positivity within the home," enthuse the pair. Cleaning the windows so they let in more light could also be a good move. The stylish pair have taken a lot of inspiration from Feng shui. Although it might sound a tricky concept to get your head around, the traditional Chinese practice basically centres on the belief that the specific arrangement of shapes, furniture and objects can have an effect on the unseen energies around us, and combine to harmonise and balance a space. Creating a positive home environment, it's believed, benefits our mental and physical health too. Curious? Follow Topology's seven step home 'detox' plan to create a serene sanctuary that boosts your wellbeing, and where you can relax and look forward to sunnier days ahead...

FOLLOW THE THREE-COLOUR RULE Sticking to a simple colour scheme can prevent your space from feeling chaotic or busy, they point out. Just doing that can, they explain, make spaces feel much more understated and tranquil but still full of depth and interest. TOP TIP: Pick three main colours that naturally appeal to you, then build on that by choosing different shades or tones that work with the dominant colour of the three. If you're a decor diva and ultra fashionable blue appeals, this could be a great calming choice. As the Topology duo highlight, research has found that being in blue spaces can even lower our blood pressure. Adding toning shades to your chosen blue colour - such as teal, navy or sky blue - could be the perfect colour palette for a gentle, harmonious scheme. INTRODUCE MORE NATURE Biophilia is a bit of a buzzword in the worlds of interiors and wellness right now - and in essence is a nod to upping the greenery in rooms with indoor plants, to harness our innate need to connect with nature. The Topology pair point out the powerful potential effect on our wellbeing of filling our homes with plants, as it's thought we're significantly happier when we're surrounded by the natural world.

HOME LIVING

TOP TIP: An interior furnished with natural materials earthenware, linen, marble-based lamps and objects, woollen cushions and blankets - will increase that feeling of being connected to the great outdoors.

DESIGNATE A CLUTTER DRAWER No home can be completely free of clutter - so create a place specifically for tucking it away. Try the designers' two-step plan for a clutter-busting solution.

LIFT ITEMS OFF THE FLOOR Lifting furniture, clutter and everyday objects up and away from the floor can easily create a lighter, detoxified and more uplifting space, according to the pair.

First, home in on that clutter and gather it into one place (at some point, you can work out whether you can sort it, reduce it, or get rid of it altogether). Next, select one drawer to store unsightly or practical items that can't be stored elsewhere in a home.

"Seeing more floor space and light through and around objects in a room helps a space feel much more weightless and clutterfree," they explain.

Unsightly electrical cables, newspapers, children's toys or spare accessories could be the perfect candidates for that 'tidy away' compartment, they suggest.

TOP TIP: Sofas or chairs with high legs make furniture appear less bulky and dominating. Open storage and wall shelves will complement the style and add to an airy, uncluttered effect.

CREATE A MULTI-SENSORY HOME Finally, finish with a flourish by making your home a multi-sensory space, urge the interior gurus. This simply means a space which appeals to all of our senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste.

USE ROUNDED SHAPES Shape - not size - is everything! Spherical, round, or gently curving furniture and home accessories can not only create a sense of balance but is visually pleasing, say the designers. There's even science behind the theory, they point out, as research has found that receptors in the brain light up dramatically when people are around the presence of curved or round objects, rather than angular or jagged shapes. TOP TIP: A round mirror above a bed is effective in a bedroom, which should be an oasis of calm, while other good choices are a round pouffe, spherical pendant lights, or a round coffee table.

58 | www.life-mags.com

Apparently, if all those needs are catered for, explain the duo, it helps us feel relaxed and nurtured in our homes - what's not to like? TOP TIP: While in general, the scent of lavender and vanilla and soft fabrics such as cashmere make us feel comforted, it's more important to focus on what makes you feel good as an individual. Experiment with different colours, textures, fabrics and scents to help you find the perfect ingredients for your special sanctuary, suggest Brandhorst and Bluff. "After all," they say, "our homes should be personal to each of us and adhere to our needs."

HOW TO CREATE A MINDFULNESS CORNER IN YOUR GARDEN As focus on the wellbeing benefits of plants and nature grows, RHS scientist Alistair Griffiths talks to Hannah Stephenson about mindfulness corners... RHS director of science, Professor Alistair Griffiths has done a lot of research into wellbeing and gardens. Now, he's teamed up with award-winning garden designer Matt Keightley to help more of us dig into these benefits with a new book, RHS Your Wellbeing Garden, in which the pair offer a range of ideas for using greenery and gardens to distract from the stresses of life, whether it be butterflies, birdsong, or sensory and scented plants. "I hope this book will say, 'Listen people, you are part of nature'," Griffiths explains. "We've done lots of work into how we look after birds and bees, but we haven't really looked at what a garden means for our own health." There's lots of evidence that being in nature is good for us - so why not create spaces specifically for this purpose? The idea is to create a peaceful corner, surrounded by plants, where you can practice some mindfulness.

GARDENING MARCH:Layout 1 27/02/2020 15:31 Page 2

A fan of checking in for a "body health check", Griffiths suggests: "Breathe more deeply and think about the different parts of your body and working through them to check your health status, surrounded by nature.

• Mini diggers, excavators, dumpers and lorries (self drive available) • Topsoil supplied & delivered • Black sand, chippings & hardcore supplied & delivered • Hard landscaping • Large/small excavations undertaken • Demolition • Drainage and Drain Laying • Fencing • Sand Schools

"It's about being in the present, backed by evidence which shows that if you spend a little bit of time just stopping and thinking about yourself and how you are feeling, it helps to be surrounded by the right elements of your natural habitat." Researchers in Edinburgh also found people living closer to green space had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those living further away, he adds. "There's a worry that we'll get 'Nature Deficit Disorder', where the less nature we have within our habitat has a negative effect on our anxiety and stress," says Griffiths.

Curious to 'grow' some nature-inspired wellbeing or create a garden mindfulness corner of your own? Read on for Griffiths' top tips... WHAT SHOULD YOU INCLUDE? "Key elements of life, like shelter and water, are relevant to a mindfulness corner, which is trying to create a refuge but with an ability to view outside of that," says Griffiths. WHERE DO YOU START? "Create an area of seating where you can sit alone, or with friends and family," he suggests. Try to make room for plants which attract butterflies, bees and wildlife to distract you from everyday life. "Even on a balcony, if you can look at your wider view and see a wider part of nature. Picture-frame those," adds Griffiths. "If there are trees in the city you can help to create a design to picture-frame that bit, like a window to nature." THINK ABOUT WATER It's good to have an element of water, where you have the ability to see and hear the water and look at its reflectiveness, he advises. And if you only have a balcony, or no outdoor space at all? "Bring nature indoors," says Griffiths. "You can make a mindfulness corner in your house, bringing greenery into those spaces, which will be more critical in relation to the future. Interior green walls are developing, which are becoming quite easy to maintain. continues overleaf...

"In my house, I have a couple of nice palms in self-watering containers and some ferns in a corner. They sit in my office along with asparagus ferns along my windowsill. The greenery connects to the wider landscape. Even just having a couple of plants is the first connection people have with nature." FOCUS ON FRAGRANCE "Scent is critical," says Griffiths. "Choose things which are fragrant. There's scientific evidence linking lavender to calm and sleep. The beauty of lavender is that it attracts bees and other distractions [too]." CONSIDER COLOUR "In the RHS Wellbeing Garden at Wisley, we've looked at the psychology of colour and how its hues have an impact on us emotionally, but what seems to have more of an impact is the intensity of that colour. The brighter the colours, the more impact they have on our emotions," Griffiths explains. "A mindfulness corner is about trying to surround yourself with different types of greens, because green is a colour that seems to be universally liked by people across the world, as is blue. "When you add water to the scene, it gives you the blues and the greens. They are commonly thought of as calming colours, linking nature, water and the sky, the things that give us life." WILDLIFE IS IMPORTANT "Even if you live in a high-rise flats, have bird feeders. Bees also get up there and other wildlife will find it. Having things that attract wildlife is a key aspect," says Griffiths.

62 | www.life-mags.com

HAVE ELEMENTS OF TOUCH Just as you're thinking about sounds and scents, touch is another of the senses that can be tapped into. "Include plants around touch, such as soft ornamental grasses, the sort of plants that you want to run your hand through when you walk past," suggests Griffiths. "Again, it's about the connection with nature." DON'T OVER-COMPLICATE THINGS Keep it relatively simple and opt for plants you'll be able to care for. Griffiths notes that aiming to grow plants for success can boost self-esteem. For example, put strawberries in your mindfulness corner to attract wildlife, he suggests, and you are almost guaranteed a crop in your first year - and you get to taste the fruits of your labour. LONDON FASHION WEEK: EVERYTHING YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED FROM THE AUTUMN/WINTER SHOWS Katie Wright recaps all the top stories from the UK's fashion capital... As one of of the world's four main fashion capitals, twice a year London plays host to five days of catwalk shows attended by celebrities, fashion editors, retail buyers and other industry insiders, all keen to get a glimpse of what's in store for next season.

Soundtracked by a classical version of Abba's 'Dancing Queen', the collection was awash with Quinn's signature vivid florals and voluminous shapes. But as usual it came with a side of subversiveness, this time in the form of bondage-inspired bejewelled and studded face masks.

London Fashion Week's autumn/winter 2020 edition concludes today - but as usual, the clothes were only half the story.

VICTORIA BECKHAM'S GENTLE REBELLION Victoria Beckham said she was thinking about breaking the rules for AW20, but hers was a 'gentle rebellion' that brought chunkier heels on over-the-knee boots and slightly shorter hemlines on tweed A-line skirts.

From backstage to the action on the catwalks and the famous front rows, here's what went down in the Big Smoke... BURBERRY'S TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE Riccardo Tisci said he was inspired by memories of his time as a young designer, for his fourth collection at the helm of Burberry. The result was a confident showing that married the storied house's well-known codes - a beige colour palette, trench coats, check prints - with streetwear staples, bold colours and metallic fabrics. The deconstructed rugby shirts in bright hues were a highlight, as were the men's duffle coats - we predict copycat looks will be all over the high street next season. TOMMY HILFIGER'S STAR-STUDDED SHOW Veteran US designer Tommy Hilfiger staged the most celebrityfilled show of the week on Sunday night to unveil #TommyXLewis, a collaboration with racing driver Lewis Hamilton. The Formula One driver cast supermodels young and old including Erin O'Connor, Jodie Kidd, Jourdan Dunn and Alessandra Ambrosio - in the show, and he was joined for his bow at the Tate Modern by Naomi Campbell wearing a neon cagoule from the streetwear-heavy collection. ROKSANDA'S FABULOUS FRONT ROW Aussie A-lister Cate Blanchett graced the front row at Roksanda alongside fellow actors Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson and Zawe Ashton, making up one of the coolest front rows of the week. The leading ladies were treated to a stunning collection in the grand surroundings of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, featuring the designer's trademark vivid colours and fluid silk gowns.

As usual, the Beckham crew (minus Brooklyn) were on hand to support mum at her Sunday morning show. FUTURE FASHION STARS ON SHOW London is renowned as the breeding ground for future fashion superstars, and if you want to find out who's destined to be the next big thing, the Central St Martins MA show is a must-see. Hotly-tipped this year are Paolina Russo, a Canadian graduate who has already bagged a collaboration with Adidas thanks to her impressive knitwear designs, and Johanna Parv, whose garments with detachable bags are designed for urban cyclists. METALLIC MAKE-UP On the beauty front, it was all about sparkle and shine in London, with gold leaf pasted on models at Preen, silver leaf used to create foil eyes at Erdem, crystal shards at Halpern and glitter at Marques'Almeida. While these bold looks may not seem very wearable in the real world, they're sure to generate a trend for metallic and glitter textures come next season. MATTY BOVAN'S BIG BARNETS The most extreme hair look of the week came courtesy of the Matty Bovan catwalk, where certain models were weighed down with humongous wigs five times as wide as their heads. Practical they were not, but that's not what Bovan is about. His mantra for autumn/winter? Big hair, don't care.

RICHARD QUINN'S FLORAL FANTASY Richard Quinn has fast become one of the hottest tickets of LFW thanks to his catwalk theatrics, and his Saturday-night show did not disappoint.

Sveiki (Welcome) to

Vilnius

by Rebecca Underwood

© Laimonas Ciunys. Gediminas Tower For those seeking to escape the pressures of life in the fast lane, Vilnius, the charming capital of Lithuania, sits on the junction of Northern, Eastern and Central Europe and offers a more tranquil spot and a glimpse into a fascinating history and culture. The cobbled ‘Old Town’ section of the city, which secured UNESCO World Heritage status in 1994 is the most popular attraction and is much admired for its captivating examples of baroque architecture, the neoclassical Cathedral and St Anne’s Church, which reflects the splendour of the Gothic style.

© Go Vilnius. Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania

I made my way to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus, which was renovated in 2006, and reflects the elegant neoclassical style. Site of the coronations of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the burial place of Casimir Jagiellon, the patron saint of Lithunia, it is a spectacular structure. There is much to see, including the Sovereign’s Mausoleum, which is below Casimir’s chapel, and contains the remains of Vytautas the Great, ruler of Lithuania from 1392 until 1430, and who is revered as a national hero. The Grand Duke Gediminas ruled Lithuania from 1315 until 1341 and, it is said, that following a strenuous hunting expedition he promptly fell asleep and dreamed of a howling iron wolf atop a hill. The following morning he summoned a pagan priest to interpret the dream and it was suggested that the iron wolf represented a castle and a city, which would be established by Gediminas, and that city would become the capital and the centre for the rulers of Lithuania. And it was so; the Grand Duke built the capital and it was named Vilnius. Traders, merchants and those skilled in craftwork were duly invited to settle and the city became known as Lithuania’s Jerusalem and prospered greatly. To learn more about the life of Gediminas I visited the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The original property was demolished in the early 1800’s, and the reconstructed palace is a real treat for those with an appreciation of architectural styles. The original palace was once Lithuania’s diplomatic, political and cultural heart and, from the 15th to the 17th centuries, it was highly regarded throughout Europe. The reconstruction easily captures the essence of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, and the exhibitions focus on the remaining ancient ruins, highlighting the architectural development of the original structure. I spent an extended period of time enthralled with the continues overleaf...

overlooks Cathedral Square, is stylish and elegant and offers an enticing menu of European cuisine including the hotel’s signature dish, the ‘Treasures of Žemaitija Forest’, which features high-end roe deer, home-made Švilpikai (a traditional potato dumpling), sautéed forest Boletus, blueberry gel, sunroot crisps and a Nebbiolo red wine sauce and, of course, served with aplomb. In-house facilities include a spa with treatment rooms, relaxation and fitness areas, Finnish and steam saunas and an indoor pool. The spa menu offers a wide choice of treatments and I opted for the energising ‘winter warmer’, a deep tissue massage, which focuses on the body’s joints, and followed by a warming foot balm. With my time in Vilnius drawing to a close I was ready to embark on my final excursions.

Grand Hotel Kempinski Deluxe Room With Balcony elaborate ceremonial halls, which centre on the evolution of architectural styles, and I then made my way to the final part of the tour, which features an exposition describing the lives of past residents of the palace. Seeking a view over the city, I headed for the observation deck on top of the Gediminas Tower, the remaining part of the Upper Castle, which was completed in 1409. The site can be reached by foot from Gediminas Hill but, I must confess, I took the easy option and embarked on the funicular railway, which takes less than a minute. The tower features a museum with displays of local archaeological finds and there are models of castles dating back to the 14th century, but the most valuable treasure has to be the spectacular views of the city, across the Vilnele River, from the top of the tower. The crisp Lithuanian air awakened my appetite and I hopped on a local bus and made my way to the Imperial restaurant, located in the centre of the Old Town. Recipient of the 2019 World Luxury Restaurant Award for Regional Fine Dining Cuisine, the Imperial attracts royalty, high profile individuals and celebrities galore, and offers the highest levels of service. Surrounded by wicker panels stretching from floor to ceiling and engraved with gold and bathed in the light from the twinkling crystal chandeliers, the dining area is exquisite. Attended by professional, gloved waiters, I was acutely aware that this would be a dining experience to savour and the flavours of my butter-fried sea scallops with truffle shavings on a bed of celery puree, which was proudly presented on a Versace dish, were, of course, sublime. For a post dining brisk walk I headed for a nearby popular attraction; the Gate of Dawn, which dates back to the 16th century. Once an entrance to the city, the Gate of Dawn features a chapel and a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary, attracting pilgrims from far and wide, and in September 1993 Pope John Paul II visited the site. After my extensive explorations and feeling a trifle weary I was keen to indulge in a spot of pampering and the Grand Hotel Kempinski was just the ticket. Located in the centre of the Old Town and right on Cathedral Square, the property is within walking distance to many major tourist attractions and a stroll away from the enticing designer boutiques on Gedimino Boulevard. The hotel’s accommodations feature a variety of rooms and suites including the presidential suite, which measures 132 square metres of opulent luxury with a separate lounge, dining room and kitchenette. This elegantly furnished suite features an ultra comfortable king-size bed swathed in crisp, white linens, and affords a deep slumber and after spending an extended morning relaxing in the soothing and scented bubbles in the oversized bathtub I was ready for a hearty brunch. The hotel offers a wide choice of dining venues and includes the outstanding Restaurant Telegrafas, so named as the property was used as a central telegraph after 1948. The restaurant, which

In 1940 Lithuania was annexed by the Soviet Union, the Nazis invaded Vilnius in June 1941 and two ghettos were established in the Old City. As a result of Nazi occupation and the horrors of the Holocaust, the vast majority of Lithuania’s Jewish population were slaughtered and the Holocaust Museum, located on Pamėnkalnio gatvė, bears testament to the tragic events. In 1944 the Soviet Army regained control and in 1988, inspired by Gorbachev’s reformations, Lithuania sought independence from the Soviet Union, which was achieved in March 1990. For a deeper insight into Lithuania’s experiences under Soviet control I visited the Museum of Occupation and Freedom Fights, which is located in the former headquarters of the Gestapo and the KGB. Focusing on the Soviet Union’s occupation of Lithuania, which lasted for fifty years, the museum’s exhibits include photographs and details of mass arrests, deportations, interrogations and executions, which took place in the basement of the property. For my final excursion, I hopped on a local bus bound for the Republic of Užupis, a bohemian neighbourhood, which is located on the other side of the Vilnele River and has a population of approximately seven thousand, which includes at least one thousand artists. Prior to Lithuanian independence it was a neglected area with many dilapidated homes without utilities, residents in despair and keen to protect their creative spirit. Following Lithuanian independence in 1990, Soviet statues were removed from the city and all the plinths remained empty until a group of local artists erected a statue of the American musician Frank Zappa. The call for the freedom of expression and policies to ensure an acceptable standard of living for the residents gathered pace and on 01 April 1997, the neighbourhood, which covers less than one square kilometre, declared independence from Lithuania. Forming its own government constitution, currency, flag and anthem, Užupis duly announced that it had its own president; Roman Lileikis, who is also a musician, poet and film director. Although unrecognised by foreign governments, Užupis is respected by the people of Lithuania and each year on April 1st the independence of Užupis is celebrated, the bridge is manned, and visitors are welcome to get their passports stamped. I stopped off at a local restaurant and ordered the traditional dish of potato pancakes ‘Bulviniai blynai’, accompanied by a glass of ‘Gira’; a fermented drink made from black rye bread, and I held my glass high in honour of the Užupis constitution, which stipulates that ‘everyone has the right to be happy’. ‘Top tip’ Accommodation For more information on the Grand Hotel Kempinsky visit kempinski.com Images provided courtesy of Go Vilnius. WORRIED ABOUT GETTING OLDER:Layout 1 02/03/2020 14:01 Page 1

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

WORRIED ABOUT GETTING OLDER? HOW TO EMBRACE AGEING POSITIVELY Could happier, healthy older age be all about mindset? Lauren Taylor speaks to the author of a new book aiming to transform our approach to ageing... When it comes to getting older, we're bombarded with negative messages daily - and we appear to have simply accepted them as truth. The anti-ageing product market is huge (there's big money in telling us wrinkles are something to halt and hate) and there are endless misconceptions and stereotypes, which can become a self-fulfilling prophecy for some in later life. "You very seldom hear anyone talk with a positive sense around getting older," says Guy Robertson, author of new book, The Ten Steps Of Positive Ageing, who is on a mission to change how we view older age, and help people embrace the later stages of life with a positivity, happiness and purpose. The saying, 'You look good for your age', may be intended as a compliment, but really, says Robertson, "it all stems from the idea that getting older is something to be resisted at all costs". So how about instead of fearing old age and telling people they have to cling to their youth, we embrace the last 20-30 years of life with as much guts and gusto as we in our earlier years? What would happen if we started seeing ageing as a privilege, full of opportunity? THE IMPACT ON HEALTH It would be naive to say ageing doesn't have any negative impact on physical health, but Robertson's book explores research showing that the way we think about ageing can further impact health and wellbeing - positively as well as negatively. One study tested whether or not people felt positive about getting older and, 20 years later, cross referenced their answers with death records. "They found that people who had negative attitudes towards their own ageing died on average about seven-and-a-half years earlier than people who had more positive attitudes," Robertson says.

Although there's always more to the picture of course, he highlights there are links between this mindset and health outcomes - "people live less long, get ill more often, recover more slowly and don't recover as fully. It's that self-fulfilling prophecy that old age is going to be bad." So is it possible to turn this way of thinking on its head - and live healthier, happier lives as we get older? Robertson notes there's an "overwhelming amount" of research to indicate that an optimistic outlook is good for us - that it improves longevity, physical health and emotional wellbeing. A SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE It's not easy to suddenly switch your mindset of course, and Robertson isn't advocating a "rose-tinted spectacle view of ageing" - because of course ageing does have its downsides, including losing loved ones and a loss of some of our physical and mental functioning. "But that's not the only story," he stresses. "People get wiser, they tend to be much happier, they have more emotional stability, they have more time to do things they might not have been able to do when they were younger." He says we also develop a better sense of self as we age and an ability to see the bigger picture more clearly. "As you get older, you realise you've got through other difficult things earlier on in your life, and get less debilitated by challenges." HAVING PURPOSE Robertson's book explores 10 steps of positive ageing - including maintaining connections, adopting a mindful outlook, building resilience, and learning from your past - but he says a sense of purpose is "absolutely critical" for happy ageing. When retirement age hits, we're frequently told to relax - it's liberating! But what about after that? "Of course, some think, 'I can go on a cruise, put my feet up, play golf'. And yes, all these things are true and they do have value and will keep you happy for a while, but only for a while," he says."It can become very hollow, people can become quite anxious and depressed." So what is our place in society after retirement? "There's generally no accepted view of what you do then, apart from have some fun and look after the grandchildren, but don't use the NHS too much," Robertson says. "It's not a great sense of fulfilment." It's also important to remember that people in later life can, and do, provide a huge contribution to society - from grandchild care and volunteering, to the income tax they still pay. So, after you lose that daily sense of achievement that work may have provided for the last 40 or so years, Robertson suggests finding something that can help replace it: volunteer, keep learning new skills, find a way to contribute that helps you feel satisfied. Besides, we're living longer - retirement age can span 20 or 30 years. Of course, some people have long-term conditions and may have very serious declining health in older age, but thanks to medical advances, people with health problems are often living longer too. VISUALISING THE FUTURE We spend our youth looking towards the future, often forgetting to focus on the present, while in retirement age we might not want to look towards the future (although, ironically, you may be better at 'living in the moment'). Robertson says it's "really, really important" people don't lose sight of the future though. "The idea that the important time is age 20-50 is nonsensical. Every moment is really precious," he says. "That 20 or 30 years will be better experience for us if we have a sense of where we want to go. What sort of place do you want to be living in? What sort of things do you want to have achieved in 20 years time? How do you want to look after your health?" The latter being arguably more important than its ever been. As Robertson notes: "If you've got a direction you're going in, you're more likely to end up with something you want." MARCH ISSUE | 69

MOTORING

FIRST DRIVE LEXUS RC F By Ryan Hirons Lexus has updated its powerful but ageing RC F. Ryan Hirons gets behind the wheel to see if this old-school coupe can match more modern rivals... WHAT IS IT? Way back when, the naturally-aspirated V8 engine defined the high-end performance coupe segment - but that trend has died out for the most part. BMW's second-to-last M3 utilised eight-cylinders, but the proceeding model switched to a six-cylinder engine, while the once-hellish 6.3-litre Mercedes C63 AMG dropped down to 4.0-litres and took on a set of turbines. A similar thing happened with the Audi RS5 too, swapping its eight-cylinders for six. There is an outlier to this trend though, and one that's often forgotten. The Lexus RC F joined the fray in 2014 in a fashion that went against tide - offering a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine. Admittedly, sales never set the world alight, but Lexus hasn't given up the ghost and has recently treat the model to a light refresh. So, are the updates to this old brute effective?

Facts at a glance Model as tested: Lexus RC F with Track Pack Engine: 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 Power (bhp): 457 Torque (Nm): 520 Max speed (mph): 168 0-60mph: 4.1 seconds MPG: 23.9 Emissions (g/km): 258

MOTORING

WHAT'S NEW? Though Lexus is a firm very much focused on hybrid technologies these days, it (perhaps surprisingly) hasn't messed with the RC F's powertrain formula here - sticking with that raucous V8 of old albeit with a little less power. Changes do come beyond that, though. Visual alterations include new headlights, a tweaked front grille and revised taillights, while mechanical changes are namely refined suspension bushings, minor weight savings and launch control as standard. New Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres are thrown into the package as standard, too. WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET? So, on to the V8 that defines the Lexus RC F. This 5.0-litre, eight-cylinder unit produces 457bhp and 520Nm of torque (down 14bhp and 10Nm as a result of stricter emissions regulations), delivered to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. As a result, the RC F is capable of 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited 168mph top speed. Efficiency is far from the name of the game here, with a claimed WLTP Combined figure of 23.9mpg with CO2 emissions weighing in at 258g/km. The old-school nature of this car is a bit of an anomaly today, and that gives a distinctive character to the unit. Initially, it can feel sluggish with a lack of immediate torque but once the revs tick over the 3,000rpm mark its power comes in with a real ferocity - a curve that's matched by its engine note too. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? Though the engine of the Lexus RC F may be brash and spine-tingling, the driving experience isn't really that at all. This isn't some agile monster looking to carve up every corner in its path and run circles around its rivals. Rather, this feels more like a refined cruise missile - happy to sit on a motorway in supreme comfort and turn on the straight-line goods when called upon. If mashing the throttle to indulge in acceleration is your thing, you may find yourself at home here. When it comes to cornering though, the RC F can be frustrating. It's not particularly keen to get its power down (though cold January weather didn't help that) and while there is a sense of composure through the corners, the car never particularly at home when trying to attack a tight country road. Soft-set suspension creates a wallowy feel to the rear of the car, and it's hard to make the most of the evident performance on offer as a result.

HOW DOES IT LOOK? In the grand scheme of things, little has changed in the way the Lexus RC F looks - not that we're calling that a bad thing. Its altered headlights are the most noticeable change and to us improve the package, but you'd be hard pressed to notice tweaks otherwise. Its overall styling remains quintessentially Japanese, with its low-slung silhouette littered with peculiar angles and 'look at me' styling elements. It's certainly an acquired taste, particularly in the Azure Blue colour our test car is in, but this particular tester is a fan. WHAT'S IT LIKE INSIDE? Though updates have come to the outside of the car, that treatment hasn't really come to the interior. To an extent, that's fine, it's still loaded with high-quality materials and feels incredibly well put together. It does feel outdated, though. The woeful infotainment system is still controlled via an irritating notepad, and there's even a CD player included for a real throwback. We'd like to have seen the introduction of parent company Toyota's latest system here. As for space, four can be seated and the rear row is surprisingly usable on shorter journeys - though we'd avoid carrying four adults for longer trips. Its boot can hold 366 litres of luggage, too, which is notably down on the BMW M4's 445-litre capacity. WHAT'S THE SPEC LIKE? When it comes to standard equipment, Lexus has thrown the book at the RC F. Luxuries like rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, all-round parking sensors, keyless start and its infotainment system are thrown in out of the box, while Lexus' Safety System + brings adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams and pre-collision warning. VERDICT Though updated for 2020, the Lexus RC F still very much remains an old school machine - for better and worse in some areas. Its engine is something to behold in a modern era of turbocharging and electrification, providing one of the most addictive audible experiences of any car on the market as well as brutal acceleration to back the brawn up. It's just a shame the driving experience leans more towards that of a long-distance cruiser than a real performance animal, feeling more like an Alcantara-clad wingback chair than a Recaro bucket seat to make a furniture comparison. It doesn't feel quite right.

HISTORY

The Field of Silver: Jersey’s Hidden Hoard A Chieftain of the Coriosolitae tribe Armorica (Brittany), 56 BC Death is coming. We shivered when we heard the first rumours, and fear whispered in our dreams. Then the travellers started arriving, refugees at our hearth. Their clothes were torn, their limbs bloody with the scars of combat. They told us of villages ravaged, of fires burning for days without end. The time has come to flee. Julius Caesar is on the march. His legions have come to seize our country. We grew up in the shadow of Rome, trading with their great Empire; and now they have turned on us. Like beasts whose ravenous hunger can never be sated, they desire fresh meat. We call ourselves Celts of the Coriosolitae tribe. They have new names for us: Galli, Gauls; vassals; subjects. Yet we are a proud maritime people, the guardians of the northern coast. Our blood sings of the shore, and we are intimate with every harbour and lagoon. Tonight, there is an arc of flame on the horizon. So, I command our treasure-trains to leave for the coast. I lead a file of strong warhorses, and every saddlebag is bulging with coin. Where the Forest of Scissy runs into the dunes, we haul the treasure into our boats. We know that beyond the long reef, there lies a great granite Island. We have built hilltop fortresses and encampments here. It is our tribe’s fortress, our sanctuary. We land in the sandy bay on the Island’s southern shore, where the conger-fishermen huts are perched on the edge of the marsh. Then we ride inland, to the high ground over the south-eastern fields, to our secret encampment. We know there is a grassy burial mound watching over these parts, a hill built by the ancients to cover secrets unknown. That gives us hope. Under the moonlight, we bury our silver-copper coins, our precious staters and billons, the treasure of our tribe. My wife adds her collection of gold torques. We bury them all in haste, in a series of pits in the soft earth. Thousands upon thousands of coins, glimmering there like fish scales. Then we consecrate the land, entrusting it to the watch of the ages. *** The Celtic treasure lies buried in the field, as the empire of Rome reaches its zenith of magnificence and glory. It remains hidden, as the wheel of history turns and the Empire devours itself, when the Roman Forum crumbles and sheep graze over the ruins. It remains forgotten as the brute hulk of Mont Orgueil rises over the eastern parishes of Jersey, as the Gothic folly of Prince’s Tower looms over La Hougue Bie, crumbles to ruin and is finally torn down. All this time the treasure is forgotten, waiting to be found.

By Paul Darroch

There are always rumours; shards of broken pottery in a Grouville field, the occasional coin ploughed up with the potato harvest. And then one day, in an age beyond all imagining, the secret is finally uncovered. The hoard is revealed. The Coriosolitae have vanished. We will never know their names. All we have left are their coins; decorated with the chariots of a vanished world. We can see their likeness in the shocking heads with spiral curls, and their eyes that cut like daggers. Thousands of proud and cryptic faces are staring at us, men who have gazed on other worlds; but look as if they already know us. Paul Darroch is the author of Jersey: The Hidden Histories and Jersey: Secrets of the Sea, which are both available on Amazon and on sale throughout the Island.
